Staysure pros and cons

who underwrites staysure travel insurance

Whether you’re going on a stag do in Europe or visiting your daughter in Australia, you should always get a travel insurance policy that will cover you and the possessions you’re taking away.

Like other insurers, Staysure has a wide range of policies. Much like different factors of sun lotion, some offer basic levels of protection for you and your possessions, while others offer really comprehensive coverage.

In this guide we break down all the different travel insurance options you can get with Staysure, before we assess whether it’s any good as a travel insurance company.

Staysure was started back in 2004, and began with the aim of providing comprehensive and affordable travel insurance for people over the age of 50. Whether they live in the UK or they’re an expat.

These days it does more than just insurance, and has branched out into offering holidays and cruises too.

Who underwrites Staysure?

Staysure is mainly underwritten by ERV, an Ergo Group Company registered in Germany as Europäische Reiseversicherung A.G. It is authorised by the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BAFIN) and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Meanwhile it is subject to limited regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority.

However you should read your policy documents to double check, as not all of its travel insurance sections are underwritten by ERV.

Staysure offers several types of travel insurance cover. They are listed below with a selection of their features.

  • Single trip
  • Annual cover
  • Backpacker cover
  • Cruise cover
  • Winter sports cover
  • Worldwide cover
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Family cover

Heading away on just the one holiday this year? You’ll want single trip cover if so. With Staysure a single trip deal will look like this:

  • No upper age limit.
  • Declare pre-existing health conditions through its quick online quote process.
  • Get unlimited emergency medical cover.
  • You pay more to go to certain regions, such as the Far East and North America.
  • 24/7 medical emergency helpline.

Going away more than just the once this year? Maybe you’re going skiing and heading abroad in the summer too? Taking out a multi-trip (otherwise known as annual) policy could save you time and money. You’ll only have to sort your insurance out once, and it could be cheaper than getting multiple single-trip policies. Here’s what Staysure’s deal will offer:

  • Get unlimited protection for medical expenses abroad.
  • Pay extra for certain regions, for instance, the Far East and North America.
  • Maximum 50 consecutive days away if under 70.
  • Maximum 35 consecutive days away if over 70.

Heading into the great unknown for the adventure of a lifetime? Backpacking cover is tailor made for gap years and the intrepid travellers. With Staysure your policy will have the following features:

  • Only available for Super Economy and Economy cover.
  • Maximum travel time of 18 months.
  • You can return home 3 times for a maximum of 7 days each.
  • Cover only for ages 18-60.
  • Up to £2m emergency medical cover.

Heading off on a golfing holiday? Don’t let any unexpected hiccups get in the way of you and the green. With Staysure you don’t need to buy golf insurance, as a basic policy will cover personal liability and person accident while playing golf. However getting an additional golf insurance deal will mean:

  • Cover for your clubs, bags and trolley against theft.
  • Compensation if you need to hire golf equipment because yours was stolen or lost.
  • Hole-in-one cover so you can celebrate properly on the 19th hole.
  • Protection if you can’t play because of injury, illness or poor weather.

Going on a long-awaited cruise this year? Staysure cruise cover will make sure you and your possessions are protected, even if it isn’t all plain sailing. While it is an additional policy and you’ll have to pay more, it could be worth it. The key features of this policy include:

  • Can only get as an add-on to a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
  • Cover if circumstances beyond your control mean you miss your port departure, the itinerary changes, or you’re confined to your cabin for medical reasons.
  • Replacement for any personal items or important documents (such as a passport) that are lost or taken.

Going skiing or snowboarding? You’ll want to fully enjoy the slopes without fretting about losing your gear or having a serious accident. With winter sports cover you’ll be fully protected and get financial help should anything happen. Here are the key features of Staysure’s deal.

  • Upper age limit of 71.
  • Policy pays for hire equipment if yours is lost or stolen.
  • Cover for your ski pass being lost, stolen or damaged.
  • Cover for unused part of ski pack if you fall ill or are injured.
  • Policy pays for you to travel to different slopes if piste is closed.
  • Cover pays for extra accommodation and travel in the event of an avalanche or landslide.
  • Medical assistance 24/7.

Whether you’re going around the world in 80 days or heading to Australia in your gap year, you will probably have to pay extra to get worldwide cover. Here’s what you’ll get with Staysure:

  • Emergency repatriation should you need to be flown home quickly.
  • Financial protection should you need medical treatment abroad.
  • A medical emergency helpline you can use 24/7.
  • Get important documents such as your passport or travel tickets replaced if they are lost or stolen.

Staysure specialises in insurance for over 50s, so it will try to cater insurance for anyone with pre-existing health issues. Staysure will decide whether it will cover you following a health screening and should you be approved the policy will include:

  • Payment towards any medical expenses if you are taken ill whilst you’re away.
  • Quick and easy repatriation if and when you need it.
  • Cover should you need to cancel your holiday due to health problems.

If you’re travelling as a family you’ll want to protect every single one of you. Taking out a family policy will save you considerable amounts of time, as you won’t need to take out insurance for each member of your clan, and the policy will include:

  • Cover for any children under the age of 18 with a family or single parent family policy.
  • Get unlimited emergency medical cover if someone in the family falls ill or gets injured abroad.
  • A medical emergency helpline that is in operation 24/7.
  • You can receive help if you miss a departure, your car breaks down once you’ve left home or public transport is delayed.

Staysure doesn’t offer loads of different levels of cover. While you can get add-on policies such as winter sports cover, when it comes to buying the main insurance deal, you have to decide whether you want either:

  • Comprehensive

Take a look at the policy details for basic and comprehensive below.

Your excess is the amount you have to contribute towards a claim before the insurer starts paying out.

So if you lose a watch worth £200 and the excess is £100, you’re going to have to pay for half of any replacement.

How much excess you pay changes from claim to claim though, so you’ll need to see your policy handbook to work out the exact amount you’re going to have to shell out.

What’s the claims process for Staysure?

If you have an emergency medical situation and you need to get insurance help quick, call +44 1403 288 414, or +1 844 780 0639 from the US or Canada.

For most other claims, such as cancellations, here’s what you should do:

Check your Validation Certificate for your policy number. Gather receipts and other important documents such as police reports. Go to its website and submit a claim online. Or call 01403 288 410. Or send a letter with the documents in the envelope.

  • Tailored to over 50s.
  • Easy online claims process.
  • 24/7 medical helpline.
  • Claims service is not open 24/7.
  • Upper age limits apply for annual cover.
  • Not a wide selection of coverage levels.

Who is Staysure?

Staysure is one of the UK’s leading holiday insurers founded in 2004. Based in Northampton, they specialise in providing travel insurance for over 50s with pre-existing medical conditions. In addition to their award winning travel insurance, they also offer expat travel insurance.

What do their policies cover?

Staysure’s basic and comprehensive travel insurance covers a range of pre-existing medical conditions as standard. There’s no upper age limit and all policies cover over 80 activities and sports. Single trip and annual holiday insurance can be tailored to your needs or upgraded with a range of optional extras.

Here’s how each option works:

Single trip insurance

Staysure single trip insurance covers one trip of up to 104 days to multiple destinations. Their basic and comprehensive travel insurance includes the following services as standard:

Comprehensive cover optional extras:

  • 100 day upgrade – allows under 70 year olds to extend their trip duration
  • Connecting flight cover – if you miss a connecting flight due to cancellation or delay
  • Excess waiver – means you don’t pay any excess in the event of a claim
  • Golf cover – covers non-professional golf
  • Terrorism cancellation cover – allows you to cancel your holiday if a terrorist attack has taken place within a 40 mile radius of your destination within 42 days of your arrival
  • European FCO travel advice extension – validates travel insurance to Europe if the FCO has advised against it
  • Cruise cover plus –  includes protection against being unable to dock at a scheduled port due to bad weather and cabin confinement
  • Gadget cover – up to £1,000 for an unlimited number of gadgets
  • Single item cover – up to £1,000 cover for a specified item
  • Winter sports – covers medical expenses or loss or damage to equipment (21 days cover included as standard in comprehensive policies)

Annual travel insurance

Staysure’s annual insurance has the same cover levels as their single trip insurance. The big difference is with annual insurance, you’re covered for multiple trips over a whole year. Each single trip is limited to 50 days for under 70 year olds and 35 days for those over 70.

Depending on your travel plans, with Staysure’s annual holiday insurance you can choose to cover trips to the following regions:

  • UK & Europe – excluding Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Malta, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey
  • All of Europe
  • Worldwide – excluding Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Thailand and the USA
  • Worldwide – All countries

Do they offer coronavirus travel insurance cover for over 50s?

Staysure include covid-19 travel insurance in all single trip and annual policies. Coronavirus insurance includes cancellation cover if you’re diagnosed with Covid-19 within 14 days of travel. Plus up to unlimited emergency medical expenses and repatriation fees if you contract the illness whilst on holiday.

You will not be covered for trips to countries listed as places to avoid by the FCO and you must mention any pre-existing conditions when you apply, as failure to do so could invalidate your policy.

How much does Staysure travel insurance cost?

The cost of Staysure holiday insurance depends on where you are traveling to, your age, health and whether you prefer basic or comprehensive cover. For example, single trip insurance for a 60 year old traveling to Spain currently costs £9.98 for basic cover, or £12.99 for comprehensive.

If you prefer annual cover , you should expect to pay £29.99 for basic or £39.99 for comprehensive. The excess is £65 for basic policies or £100 for comprehensive, no plans include cruise cover but Staysure’s annual comprehensive policy includes winter sports.

You will then pay more if you choose to enhance your policy with one of the optional extras. For example, on an annual policy, single item cover is available from £9.11, whilst connecting flight insurance will cost you an additional £29.95.

What is their claims process?

Staysure claims can be made over the phone to their emergency or general claims line or via their online claims process. You’ll need your validation certificate and any documents that support your claim. If your claim is connected to Covid-19, Staysure will also require a copy of your test results.

Am I eligible for Staysure travel insurance?

Although Staysure specialise in over 50 travel insurance with no upper age limit, all ages are eligible. They accept a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions but may exclude certain illnesses. They may also insure you if you’re undergoing tests however your doctor must be happy for you to travel.

Is Staysure travel insurance any good?

My review of Staysure travel insurance is designed to help you compare plans and find the best option for you. I would always recommend that you review all of your options to ensure you’re getting the best deal that suits your budget and needs.

Staysure travel insurance has an excellent review rating of 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot. They also have an excellent  Defaqto rating for their comprehensive travel insurance. This is not surprising considering their comprehensive insurance provides a higher level of cover.

In addition, consumer champion Which? rates Staysure 5th out of 40 insurers. So Staysure offer a good reliable service and specialise in providing cover for over 50s with pre-existing health conditions.

You have the flexibility to tailor the insurance to suit your needs with the optional extras however do be aware this will of course impact the price you pay.

Staysure travel insurance: FAQs

Do i have to declare pre-existing or suspected medical conditions to secure staysure travel insurance.

If you are awaiting test results for a suspected medical condition, this will need to be declared when arranging your Staysure travel insurance cover . When completing the online or telephone questionnaire, it is also essential to report any pre-existing conditions. Failure to do so could invalidate your policy and, in a worst-case scenario, lead to significant overseas medical expenses.

Is there an additional cost for Covid-19 travel insurance cover?

Staysure claims to be one of the first UK travel insurance companies to add Covid-19 cover to their travel insurance policies. While Covid-19 is the first real test of the travel insurance industry regarding pandemics, provisions have been made industrywide. However, it is still essential to keep up to date with the latest news on travel restrictions.

Does Staysure cater specifically for the over 50s travel insurance market?

While there has been a growing focus on the over 50s travel insurance market by Staysure , the main cover revolves around single-trip and multi-trip insurance products. These policies include specific references to the over 50s, although slight restrictions exist for those over 70. Therefore, ensuring your cover fulfils all your requirements is crucial.

While Saga has perhaps traditionally been the first choice of many for over 50s travel insurance , companies like Staysure are becoming increasingly prominent. The company, based in Northampton, has served more than 8 million customers since its inception in 2005 and continues to go from strength to strength. Making inroads into the dominance of Saga ,  Staysure offers a range of travel insurance policies , with multiple cover options, taking in an array of different medical conditions.

Whether you're looking for a new policy or to renew an existing arrangement, it's a smart move for your travel plans to start with Staysure. As a multiple winner of the British Travel Awards, the company's actions speak louder than words.

Whether you're looking for single-trip, multi-trip, or specialist cover, or need assurance about pre-existing medical conditions, our panel of travel insurance providers has you covered. Click on your chosen provider below to get started.

  • Some restrictions based on age

Do I qualify for Staysure travel insurance?

As mentioned above,  Staysure travel insurance offers comprehensive cover , with no upper age limit and a particular emphasis on over 50s. To qualify for Staysure single trip travel insurance or annual travel insurance, you must fulfil the following eligibility conditions:

  • Have been a resident of the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man for at least six months of the last 12-month period.
  • Be registered with a medical practitioner in either the UK, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.
  • Be travelling from either the UK, Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.
  • Not already be travelling at the time of purchase.
  • Be travelling for a minimum of two consecutive nights in pre-booked accommodation.

Medical cover is only applicable for overseas trips with no cover for medical expenses in the UK, Jersey or the Isle of Man. If you travel to countries against the advice of the FCDO , traditional insurance cover will be invalid.

Different types of Staysure travel insurance

As is the norm with the vast majority of holiday insurance services, there are two main types of Staysure travel cover:

  • Single trip travel insurance.
  • Annual multi-trip travel insurance.

While there is no travel insurance age limit, you will notice some restrictions if you're over 70.

Staysure single trip travel insurance

When searching for travel insurance, you will find that Staysure has an excellent reputation on sites such as Defaqto and Trustpilot. A single trip policy covers up to 50 days for those aged up to 70, reduced to 35 days for those over 70.

Often referred to as "basic" Staysure travel insurance, this type of essential travel cover includes:

While additional extras are available, there is a degree of curtailment compared to the comprehensive annual travel insurance policies. They include:

  • Travel disruption cover.
  • Connecting flight cover.

As with most travel insurance, it is possible to mix and match various elements of cover to reflect your requirements. While some additions may incorporate an extra cost, this ensures you have peace of mind when travelling.

Staysure annual multi-trip travel insurance

The Staysure annual multi-trip policy is a comprehensive travel insurance policy that will cover you for any trips of no more than 50 days in a 12-month period. This figure drops to 35 days if you are over 71 . The cover afforded to comprehensive policies includes:

The range of optional extras to add-on is also significantly extended and includes:

  • Extension from 50-day trip duration to 100 days for any one trip, limited to those under 71.
  • Cruise plus cover.
  • Gadget cover.
  • Single item cover.
  • Excess waiver.
  • Golf cover.
  • Terrorism cancellation cover.
  • Winter sports.

Medical conditions

While relevant for customers of any age, the coverage of pre-existing medical conditions is a significant concern as we age. With Staysure you will be pleased to know there is no formal medical screening , and all pre-existing medical conditions are considered when calculating premiums for travel insurance.

If you do not disclose a pre-existing medical condition or are awaiting test results, you may find that the medical element of your travel insurance is invalidated. This can lead to substantial medical bills if you require medical assistance overseas. To put this into perspective, the average cost of medical treatment in 2018 was a staggering £9,941. So, make sure you are covered!

Am I covered for Covid-19 with Staysure travel insurance?

The simple answer is yes. Staysure claims to be one of the first insurers in the UK to include Covid-19 travel insurance as part of single and annual travel insurance policies. As well as receiving a 10% discount code to help with the cost of coronavirus test packages, the specific cover includes:

Cancellation cover

You will be offered protection if:

  • You contract Covid-19 within 14 days of travelling.
  • You are advised to isolate by the UK government's Test & Trace system.
  • You are unable to complete your vaccination course due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or an allergic reaction.
  • A family member, members of your household or travelling companions are diagnosed with Covid-19 within 14 days of travel.
  • You are denied boarding rights to your plane as a consequence of Covid-19.
  • A member of your household or a close relative is hospitalised or dies as a consequence of Covid-19.

This will include prepaid services, such as accommodation, and those to which you have financial commitments. If in doubt, check with Staysure.

Cover during your holiday

With Staysure travel insurance, in the event of contracting Covid-19 overseas, you will be covered for:

  • Overseas emergency medical expenses.
  • Repatriations costs.
  • Additional daily benefits, if required to self-isolate in your holiday accommodation.

Additional insurance also cover includes:

  • Reimbursement when forced to cut short your trip as a consequence of hospitalisation/death of a member of your household/family member as a consequence of Covid-19.
  • Funds for additional accommodation/transport if deemed necessary by Staysure medical advisers.

People are still genuinely concerned about travelling overseas during the pandemic. However, many people would like to enjoy rest and recuperation overseas but are unsure of the level of cover offered. The additional focused Covid-19 cover should help.

Worldwide and regional travel insurance cover

When considering Staysure travel insurance, you will note that cover is split into specific regions instead of countries. The areas are as follows:

  • Worldwide - All countries.
  • Europewide - European countries.
  • UK and Europe - Excluding Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Malta, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.
  • Worldwide - Excluding Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Thailand and the USA.

To ensure that you get the best value for money with your Staysure travel insurance policy, you must align this with the countries you are visiting.

Underwriters

Staysure insurance policies are underwritten by ERV, part of the Ergo Group of companies which is part of the vast Munich Re insurance company. As one of the largest insurers in Europe, this offers certainty, continuity and a competitive edge for Staysure clients. To give you an idea of the company’s size, Ergo Group:

  • Operates in more than 26 countries.
  • Receives €19.2 billion of premium income.
  • Holds €140.7 billion of investments.
  • Has over 37,000 employees/sales partners.
  • Specialises in travel, health and life insurance.
  • Incorporates the latest digital technology.

These key statistics speak for themselves concerning the size and reach of the Ergo Group. The ongoing relationship between Staysure and Ergo Group offers firm foundations for the future and a degree of certainty for customers.

It is important to note that, due to the Covid pandemic, the last couple of years have been challenging for the industry. Consequently, some of our subscribers have been in touch with negative feedback regarding Staysure insurance claims. While Staysure is still one of the best-performing travel insurance companies in the UK, underwriting decisions are, to a certain extent, taken out of the company's hands.

While most claims are paid out in full, sometimes, decisions taken by the underwriter can reflect on Staysure. Some claims will be rejected even under "normal" conditions, although the uncertainty surrounding Covid has probably exacerbated this issue.

Claiming on your Staysure travel insurance policy

It is all well and good to have cover for various aspects of your travel, but it is also essential to appreciate the claims process. Thankfully, you can submit a claim over the telephone or online via your My Staysure account. Before making a claim, you will require the following documentation:

  • A copy of your validation certificate, which has your policy number (part of your policy documents).
  • Receipts/documentation regarding your claim.
  • If Covid-19 related, you will need evidence of a positive test.

While the international travel insurance industry is starting to return to normal, you may experience delays while the pandemic continues.

As mentioned above, we have received some negative feedback from subscribers recently. While all feedback is valuable, it is vital to consider the size and number of claims settled by Staysure.

Data from TrustPilot shows the company is still one of the best travel insurance providers per customer feedback. However, this impression can be diluted to a certain extent, with complainants often a little more vocal than those with a positive experience.

Does Staysure travel insurance offer value for money?

Even though  Saga  may still be the more recognised name in the over 50s travel insurance sector,  Staysure has undoubtedly made its mark . Mixing and matching the numerous policy variables to shape cover around your specific requirements is essential. This ensures that you have relevant cover in place and maximises value for money.

Staysure travel insurance has impressive ratings on both Trustpilot and Defaqto, reflecting the quality of services offered. While much of the process can be carried out online, there is still a telephone service for those who prefer talking to an adviser.

Staysure policies are administered by a business called Howserv Limited. Based in Northampton, Howserv also administers insurance policies for Petsure and Wapp Travel Insurance.

What is Staysure Cruise Plus cover?

Cruise Plus Cover is a type of travel insurance designed specifically to provide cover for events that may occur during a cruise. When purchasing travel insurance for a cruise, it is essential to consider the potential risks and ensure that the policy covers all necessary areas. Standard travel insurance policies may not offer sufficient coverage for events specific to cruise travel.

Cruise Plus Cover can be added to Staysure's Comprehensive policy to provide cover for various scenarios, including missed port departures, itinerary changes, cabin confinement, unused excursions, and cruise interruption. Some cruise operators may require a policy that offers at least £2 million in medical and repatriation coverage. This cover offers unlimited emergency medical and repatriation expenses, which meets the requirements of these operators.

Last year I had a few problems mainly due misunderstanding relative to a condition . It was troublesome but it was worth sorting . The patience of one of the senior colleagues was wonderful . I've seen some significant increase in the cost of the policy last year but largely due to the lady concerned I was happy to stay a customer . I have never in 46 years claimed on health or household insurance . I was led to Staysure initially through "Which"to which I subscribe . I haven't checked the latest evaluation in the new magazine September 2024 edition yet.

Service is king.

Dear Sir or Madam, I would like particularly to praise the manner in which the very personable Mr Ross Keddie approached explaining, very clearly, the options which are available; he gave my wife and me plenty of time to make our selection. We shall certainly come to Staysure for holiday insurance in the future, following our experience today. Yours sincerely, Brian Rivett.

This is our second time insuring with staysure . The previous time my partner needed hospital treatment for blocked Lymph nodes and he was given heart scans as he has heart failure and also given medication for Infection on legs and we claimed on the amount we paid and the claim was settled in full in a short time and didn't have to pay any excess upfront ,just sent in all the medical documents and receipts. Very good service,

Great service

Billie was extremely professional, polite and very helpful. I was also pleasantly surprised that because I had not suffered with one condition for two years and had not seen a medical professional regarding it, my premium was reduced. Thank you Staysure Travel.

Insurance fob off

Having recently had my ferry cancelled and amended to a different earliest date and port, I lost out on 2 days accomodation. I am currently attempting to recoup some of the loss for my 2 nights I missed out. 4 times I have been requested to provide proof which I have done on every occasion. It feels as if I am being deliberately fobbed off in an attempt to discourage me. 2 stars is all that I can honestly give.

Great Service Again.

Third time of using Staysure for travel insurance, easy to navigate website, and as always, great price for excellent cover. Thank you.

Exceptional assistance from customer advisor in purchasing single policy

I have annual holiday insurance for Europe with Staysure, my next trip is to Cape Verde, I contacted the company to dertermine if it would be cheaper to add Cape Verde to my annual policy or purchase a single trip. I spoke to Mohammed who was exteremely helpful & arranged a new single policy for my trip, Mohammed also arranged a discount for me on the policy which would not have happened if I had booked online , therefore I was extremely grateful.

Helpful and informative team

Helpful and informative team. Emily Assisted me promptly with all questions I had before deciding to go ahead with my policy.

The website is very easy to use

The website is very easy to use. Insurance provides all the cover that I require and the cost is comparable to other insurers that I looked at.

Very easy to buy

Very easy to buy, rather expensive, no loyalty for return customers and being asked to review when I havent had my holiday, so don't know if I will have to claim and what that process would be like. So pointless review really
