12 WAYS TO SAVE ON WINDSOR CASTLE TICKETS

This section provides information about several opportunities to save money on Windsor Castle tickets, including tourist passes, combo packages, and more.

1. Tourist Passes

Admission to Windsor Castle is included with more than one London tourist pass .

If you’re planning to enjoy a lot of different attractions in London and the surrounding areas, this is a great way to save some money.

The London Pass is one of the most popular options, and it includes tickets to Windsor Castle in addition to more than 80+ activities.

This is an all-inclusive pass that covers admission to dozens of popular tours, museums, historic locations and more for a specific amount of time (1, 2, 3, 6, or 10 days).

Here are some of the other things you can do with a London tourist pass:

  • Tower of London | £27.50
  • Westminster Abbey | £23
  • Hop on Hop off Bus Tour | £34
  • Hampton Court Palace | £23.70
  • View From the Shard | £32
  • The Queen’s Gallery | £13.50
  • The Royal Mews | £12
  • Thames River Cruise | £19.25
  • LEGOLAND Windsor Resort | £60

Alternatively, you can also see Windsor Castle on a day trip which is included on the London City Pass for 20% off.

This is a prepackaged pass that includes a few specific services and savings on dozens of additional activities.

Depending on how you use these passes, you should be able to save anywhere from 20% - 50% off general admission prices, and possibly much more than that.

To find out more, read our post  comparing London Tourist Passes .

2. Combo Packages

While tourist passes can save you a lot of money, you usually have to use them for several different activities in order to save as much as possible.

If you’d rather just enjoy a few attractions, a combo package might be better.

  • Tickets may sell out quickly.

3. 2 For 1 Windsor Castel Tickets

Although many popular and historic attractions in London are eligible for this deal, Windsor Castle is not currently included in the 2 for 1 program.

That said, there's always a chance they'll add this location to their deal shortly.

If you're planning to use the National Rail to get here, make sure to read our full post covering the 2 For 1 deal to find out more about how it works.

4. Get Free Admission for 1 Year

When you ask for your ticket purchase to be treated as a donation, you can enjoy re-admission to Windsor Castle for an entire year.

All you have to do is ask a Warden to stamp your ticket at the end of your visit!

This is a great option if you live in London and plan to visit more than once during a calendar year.

5. Bring the Kids for Free

If you’ve got any young kids under the age of 5, you won’t have to pay for their tickets.

Simply purchase an adult ticket for yourself and your children will also receive admission for free!

Tickets for youth from the age of 5-17 will be required, but they are a much lower cost at just £15 per child.

6. Use an Advantage Card

Residents of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead can receive a free advantage card which will grant them access to Windsor Castle at no charge.

All you have to do is show proof of your residence and you’ll have access to this card.

In addition to providing free admission to the castle, this card also offers several additional deals.

7. Groupon and Similar Sites

Aside from tourist passes and combo packages, this is one of the best ways to save money on admission to Windsor Castle.

Sites such as Discount London and Groupon frequently offer deals on day trips and other services in and around Windsor.

8. AAA Deals

Currently, there are no known AAA deals on tickets to Windsor Castle. That said, the tourist passes and combo packages typically offer much better deals than any offer you might get from AAA.

9. Senior Offer

Senior citizens are eligible for a lower price of £21.20, which is just over £2 off the normal price for adults.

10. Student Offer

Students with a university ID are eligible for the same lower ticket price that senior citizens receive, just £21.20.

11. Family Tickets

If you’re planning to visit Windsor Castle as a family with at least 2 adults, you can save money on tickets for up to 3 kids by purchasing a family ticket.

This option will be £60.50. To give you a sense of how much you’ll save, the total price would be £87.50 without a family ticket, which means you’ll receive over £25 off!

PLAN YOUR VISIT

There are two ways to visit Windsor Castle. You can buy tickets  and travel to the castle on your own. (See below  for how to get to Windsor Castle)

Windsor Castle Gardens

Alternatively, you can join a tour, which provides your ticket to the castle, round-trip transportation (via coach or train), and, depending on the tour company, other activities, and amenities.

We explain them below in the Tours section.

Windsor Castle Hours

The Castle is open year-round.

  • March-Oct, daily 10:00 am-5:15 pm (last admission 4:00 pm)
  • Nov-Feb, daily 10:00 am-4:15 pm (last admission 3:00 pm)

Note: Some parts of the castle close slightly earlier than others or are closed altogether on certain days.

  • Entrance to the State Apartments closes 30 minutes after the last admission time.
  • St. George’s Chapel closes at 4:00 pm, although visitors may attend the evensong service at 5:15 pm.
  • St. George’s Chapel is closed to visitors all day on Sundays as services are held all day. Worshippers may attend services, however.

Windsor Castle Closures

All of Windsor Castle may be closed on certain dates, or in some instances only specific parts of the castle will be closed.

As of January 2024, Windsor Castle is closed on both Tuesday and Wednesday each week.

How long does it take to visit?

With so much to see at Windsor Castle, we recommend that you set aside 2½ and 3 hours to tour the Castle and the grounds.

Add into that the train rides (an hour each way) and your visit to Windsor will be at least 5 hours.

Give yourself some additional time if you choose to visit Windsor Town Centre and spend some time walking around, or getting some food.

TIP: Take a look at our post on  visiting other Royal Palaces .

Best Times to Visit

The castle is busiest from opening and throughout the morning. The best time to go is after midday. If you can, buy your tickets in advance to save yourself time.

Of course, you can expect that there will be more visitors during peak season, and in the months of June and July, you have more opportunities to see the Changing of the Guard.

The advantage of visiting in the winter months is that it will be less crowded and the Semi-State Rooms will be accessible.

The disadvantage is that the Changing of the Guard occurs less frequently and only when the weather permits.

Getting Here

We recommend that you use Google Maps  to plan your trip.

The closest train station to Windsor Castle is Windsor and Eton Riverside . Trains depart from both London Waterloo and London Paddington stations.

It is about an hour train ride if you want a direct train or surprisingly, it’s faster if you're willing to change at Slough.

Once you arrive at Windsor and Eton Riverside , the castle is an easy walk from the station.

It is about  7 minutes and you can follow the signs directing you to the castle. You should be able to see the castle as you exit the station.

Green Line 702

Bus service operates several times daily from Victoria Station. The trip takes approximately one hour and 10 minutes.

Fares before midday are £19 (or £15 if the ticket is purchased via their app). Fares after midday are £10 (or £9 if the ticket is purchased via their app.)

Surbiton Coaches

This is a shuttle bus service Hampton Court Palace and between Windsor Castle. It runs 7 days a week (except 24, 25, & 26 December).

If you have an Oyster card, you can use this to get to Hampton Court station and take the shuttle bus from there.

There is no visitor car parking at the Castle, so we recommend you use public car parks in the town centre.

Details about parking can be found here .

Keep in mind that you might have to pay the Central London congestion fee depending on your route.

Windsor Castle Tours

There are a lot of great companies offering tours of Windsor Castle from London, each including admission to the attraction and transportation to and from Windsor.

You may also want to consider taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour of Windsor when you get there!

In addition to these options, we also offer a free self-guided tour .

For more information about the various ways to experience and learn about this historic landmark, make sure to check our full post covering tours of Windsor Castle .

Built by William the Conqueror in the 11 th century, Windsor Castle has been a primary seat of the royal family ever since.

In the 12 th century, the Castle complex was expanded and improved by King Henry II and became a base for King John when he was forced to hide from the population before the eventual signing of the Magna Carta – at Runnymede, just near the castle.

King Henry III heavily altered and invested in the Castle and he transformed the royal accommodation rooms into the luxurious and opulent rooms that we would today expect to exist inside a royal castle.

Much of the layout of the Castle today is because of Henry’s updates in the mid-13 th century.

King Edward III was born at Windsor Castle and used it primarily as his base for the rest of his reign.

He is the king who established the Order of the Garter and declared Windsor as its headquarters.

Edward spent £51,000 on his renovations – the largest amount spent by any medieval monarch on a single building operation.

When you consider that Edward’s annual income was around £30,000, it’s easy to see the sheer value he placed on the buildings!

Centuries later, King Henry VI was born at Windsor (and declared Henry of Windsor) and his wife was later held hostage here by King Edward IV during the tumultuous Wars of the Roses.

It was this Edward who began the construction of the present St. George’s Chapel in 1475.

King Henry VII, the eventual and ultimate victor of the Wars of the Roses, completed the Chapel and began using Windsor Castle to host diplomatic events.

Ultimately his son, King Henry VIII, continue additions to the Castle and would eventually come to rest at St. George’s Chapel.

The youngest daughter of King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, used Windsor Castle as a safe haven for crises as it was considered the most secure of royal strongholds.

She often used Windsor to entertain but by the end of her reign, Windsor was considered too small and improvements were required.

William Shakespeare makes light of the constant flow of foreign visitors in his work ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor.’

King James, I held a drinking session with the Danish King Christian of Denmark IV in 1606 that became known throughout Europe for the scandalous behavior of the two Kings, and James’s son, King Charles I was the one who finally turned an artistic eye to the Castle and added the much-needed expansions to the complex.

However, all his work was to be undone during the Civil War when the complex was seized by the Parliamentarians and totally ransacked. It is estimated that a total of 3,580oz – or 101kg – of gold and silver was taken from the Castle at this time. Charles himself would end up buried in the Chapel here – after his public execution in 1649.

After the years of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, King Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660 and Windsor was the only royal residence he modernized during his 25-year reign – showing the importance of the complex at the time.

It was Charles who initially brought in the idea of French design, mimicking the grand palace of his cousin King Louis XIV of France.

The castle fell out of royal favour during the early Hanoverian reigns but was brought back to the forefront of the royal court by King George III in the mid-18th century.

George spent over £150,000 to modernize and redesign the complex – equal to over £100 million today – and he is to be credited with the park and gardens there today. Near the end of his reign, when the King descended into madness, Windsor Castle became his prison.

His son, King George IV picked up the work his father had done, managing to spend double what his father did to bring the interiors of the Castle to a modern 19th-century luxury design and it is a lot of his work that visitors still see today.

George’s niece, Queen Victoria, initially found Windsor to be ‘prison-like’ but she lived here with her husband and it was here that he died in 1861.

Both Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, were eventually buried in the Home Park here.

Queen Elizabeth II, spent the majority of her childhood here with her sister and the rooms the princesses lived in were specially reinforced during the Blitz and Windsor was considered the best place for them to stay during the bombings.

Throughout her reign, Queen Elizabeth used Windsor as her principal weekend home.

Windsor was also the primary home for the Queen’s children - including our current King Charles III - when they were growing up and today it is where she spends the majority of her time.

Windsor Castle hosts just as many banquets and state events as Buckingham Palace does, although the latter is far more famous.

It is thanks to Queen Elizabeth II that Windsor is such an accessible location for tourists – she pushed significantly for the building to be maintained and available for the public to enjoy. And it is within St. George's Chapel that Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest after her death in September 2022.

Royal Weddings

St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle is one of the many locations where you can find celebrations of royal weddings.

Other locations are  Westminster Abbey (William and Kate) and St. Paul's Cathedral (Charles and Diana).

For his second marriage, King Charles III and Queen Camilla had their Prayer and Dedication Ceremony at St. George's Chapel.

On May 19, 2018, Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle wed at Windsor Castle in St. George's Chapel. If you love Royal Weddings as we do, check out our post  the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle .

No trip to Windsor could be complete without a visit to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has been the home of 40 monarchs and is one of the official residences of His Majesty The King.

Windsor Castle is open to visitors throughout the year, five days a week, from Thursday to Monday. We recommend allowing 2.5 to 3 hours to see everything.

Tickets for Royal Borough Advantage Card holders are available on the day (subject to availability) or can be prebooked by telephone only (transaction fee payable). Visit Windsor Castle's Practical Information page to find out more.

What to see and do at Windsor Castle (all included in your ticket price)

Visit the magnificent State Apartments to see ceremonial rooms that are used today by the Royal Family for official visits by Heads of State from other countries, investitures, and awards ceremonies, where people from all walks of life are recognised for their achievements. Explore historic rooms, built for Charles II and his Queen, Catherine of Braganza, and view some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Rubens, fine French furniture, delicate tapestries and impressive armours.

During the winter months, enter the Semi-State Rooms , the richly decorated private apartments. Severely damaged by the fire of 1992, they were completely restored to their 19th-century appearance using the original designs supplied to George IV.  Blending classical, gothic and rococo styles, they also contain some of the best 18th-century English and French works of art.

Celebrate 100 years of Queen Mary's Dolls' House, the largest and most famous dolls' house in the world! Completed in 1924, it's a perfect replica of an Edwardian residence, complete with electricity, working lifts and running water. Its scaled-down rooms range from a fully stocked wine cellar and ‘below-stairs’ spaces to grand entertaining salons, and feature contributions from over 1,500 of the finest artists, craftspeople, and manufacturers of the day. The house went on display at Windsor Castle in 1925 and has been delighting visitors ever since.  Read our blog here .

Take in the splendour of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle , the burial place of 11 monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II, Henry VIII and Charles I and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England.

St George’s Chapel is included as part of a ticketed visit to Windsor Castle. Please note, the chapel is closed to general visitors on Sundays but worshippers are welcome to attend services.

Watch Changing the Guard!  Weather permitting, the ceremony begins at 11am and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Please check the Royal Collection Trust website for latest information. There is a link to the British Army website from here too with confirmation of the full schedule.

Have a break in the Undercroft Café. Located in one of the oldest surviving spaces of the Castle, Edward III’s medieval Undercroft, which for centuries served as the Castle’s main wine cellar, is now a café open to visitors. Visit the Royal Collection Trust website to see the menu.

Family activities at Windsor Castle

Collect your handset and follow Scorch the dragon on a special tour of Windsor Castle, full of amazing stories. Try spotting mystery objects and other games as you go round.

Discover the Castle and its 1,000-year history with one of the free trails for children aged 5-11. Look out for battlements, towers, arrow loops and murder holes!

During local school holidays, join free activities for children and families including crafts, storytelling and ‘make and takes’.

If you’re looking for a quieter space, toddlers can take time in the Chill Out Zone, with toys, books and lots of bean bags. The Learning Centre is breastfeeding friendly, and has a designated family bathroom with changing table and a handy ‘caught short’ box.

The inside story

The Windsor estate is the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world . It is not only one of the official residences of the British monarchy, but also an amazing synthesis of nine hundred years of British history .

In 1066 William the Conqueror chose this location west of London due to its strategic position on the Thames River. Since that time, all major events that occurred from the conquest of Sir William to present time have always taken place near the Windsor Castle and are closely linked to the history of the British kingdom. The castle has had a great significance in British history throughout the years as it has seen the many trends and tastes of various rulers who succeeded one another.

The castle extends over 45,000 square meters on an artificial hill and is one of the favorite residences of the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II spends many weekends there and a flag that is hoisted on the round tower of the complex indicates her presence at the castle. Nevertheless, several areas of the castle are open to the public and waiting to be discovered! This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in a real fairy tale atmosphere !

You will have the chance to see the magnificent State Apartments where 39 British monarchs resided. Here you can admire the beautiful works of art from the Royal Collection, which houses treasures by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Canaletto. Marvel at the sight of the largest dining table in the world that has more than 100 seats!

From October to March the Semi-State Rooms are open to the public. These private apartments of George IV are incredibly decorated and are still used by Queen Elizabeth II for official receptions.

St. George’s Chapel is one of the most magnificent examples of English Gothic architecture. Inside you will find the graves of ten kings, including Henry VIII and Charles I.

Ladies of all ages! Be ready to be delighted once you step in front of Queen Mary's Dollhouse . It is the largest dollhouse in the world! Commissioned in the first half of the twentieth century by Queen Mary, it is a faithful reproduction of a typical aristocratic era and is complete with interior elevators, electricity, and running water!

Visiting the Castle is more than a simple visit. Tours and tickets take you back in time, giving you the chance to explore over 900 years of British royal history.

How To Visit Windsor Castle in 2024: Tickets, Hours, Tours, and More

Angel Castellanos Last Updated: February 21, 2024

Historic fortress, royal palace, and family home, Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of the British monarchy and the longest-inhabited castle in the world. Located just outside London, it welcomes over a million visitors every year, so you’ll need to prepare for your visit. To help you out, we’ve prepared this guide with everything you need to know about how to visit Windsor Castle.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to London? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. Check out our guide to London for more planning resources, our top London and Windsor Castle tours for a memorable trip, and the top things to do in London .

Visiting Windsor Castle: What We’ll Cover

If you’re planning a trip to London, you won’t want to miss Windsor Castle. You don’t have to love royalty to appreciate it. Any lover of art, history, or architecture will enjoy exploring this magnificent castle.

The state apartments have been open since 1848 when Queen Victoria opened them to the public. Various rooms are filled with priceless works of art by the old masters. St George’s chapel is one of the finest examples of the English Gothic Perpendicular style. The castle itself is also a testament to 11th-century Norman military strategy.

There’s a fascinating display of the different gifts to Her Majesty The Queen. This collection of foreign artifacts comes from the far reaches of the globe. Also, there are few places in the world where you can be surrounded by that many Holbeins, Van Dycks, and Reubens in just one room. Convinced? Here’s what you need to know about how to visit Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle Opening Hours and Tickets

View of the tree-lined Long Walk leading up to Windsor Castle in England

Opening Hours of Windsor Castle:

The castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as on December 25 and 26. Opening times vary seasonally and many state occasions take place at Windsor Castle, so it could be closed to the public on short notice. It’s best to check the official website ahead of your visit.

  • From 1 March to 31 October: 10 am to 5:15 pm, last admission 4 pm.
  • From November 1 to February 28: 10 am to 4:15 pm, last admission 3 pm.

Opening Hours of St George’s Chapel:

St. George’s Chapel is a working church with a different schedule. For the most up-to-date information, and for times of worship or services, check the website.

Hours: The Chapel is open to ticketed visitors of the Castle Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. St George’s Chapel also closes early on December 23 and 24 at 1 pm.

Pro Tip: One of the best ways to experience the chapel is to attend a service. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, it’s the only way to see the chapel. You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the service. If you do attend a service in the chapel, line up 30 minutes before the service along with Castle Hill on the side of the Castle.

I was there recently on a Sunday and attended a Mattins service, which was mainly organ music and a capella singing. The music was divine and it made the Gothic architecture come alive. To see what my visit was like, check out the stories on my Instagram .

You can buy tickets either at the ticket offices on-site or online. We recommend booking tickets well in advance.

Admission: £28 per adult | £18 for 18-24 year olds | £15.50 Children 5-16 | Free >5

Family Pricing : £60.50 for 2 Adults and 3 Children.

Pro Tip:  Skip the line by booking your ticket online ahead of time or by joining one of our  small group tours of London and Windsor —you’ll get more out of your visit.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Windsor Castle tour is worth it .

How Long To Spend at Windsor Castle

Short Answer: 2 hours.

You’ll need a minimum of 2 hours at Windsor Castle, but 3 hours is best. There’s a lot of ground to cover and it’s a lovely trip out of London. In fact, it would be a good idea to spend a whole morning at Windsor Castle if you have the time, so you can see it without rushing.

Pro Tip: The best way to approach the top things to see at Windsor Castle is to divide the castle into two geographical sections, the upper and lower wards. I like to see the State Apartments inside the castle first, then see St George’s Chapel in the lower ward afterward.

How To Get To Windsor Castle

The Windsor Royal station is an easy way to get to Windsor castle from London.

Windsor Castle is about an hour and twenty minutes west of London near Heathrow Airport. The small town around the castle is also called Windsor. You can easily get there by car, train, or bus (called a motor coach in the UK).

From Paddington station in Central London, take any GWR train (GWR) headed to Slough. Purchase tickets from a machine at the station or on the GWR train app. From Slough, take the next train to Windsor & Eton Central, a 10-minute train ride.

Exit the train station through a gallery of shops, and you’ll see Windsor Castle in front of you across the street. It is an easy 3-minute walk from the train station.

By Car or Bus (Coach)

It could take anywhere from 50 minutes to 2 hours by car, depending on London traffic and how long it takes to get out of the city center. If you’re driving from London to Oxford, Blenheim Palace, Stonehenge, or Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), Windsor Castle is on the way, just on the other side of Heathrow Airport.

Pro Tip: If you do drive, get there early to find nearby parking. Parking fills up by noon.

Windsor Castle

What to see: windsor castle.

Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation (over 900 years). It is one of the Queen’s three official residences, and is often said to be her favourite. She spends most of her private weekends at Windsor. The Royal Standard flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle when the Queen is in residence – at other times, the Union Jack flag flies in its place.  During Covid 19 the Queen has been in residence almost all of the time.

Samuel Pepys proclaimed the Castle to be “the most romantique castle that is in the world”. That was in 1666, and the same is still true today. A “Must Visit” destination.   [ BOOK TICKETS ]

Windsor Castle from a Distance

The origins of Windsor were in the 7th century Saxon settlement of Windlesora, where the present day village of Old Windsor is located. The town of Windsor is correctly known as “New Windsor” – the word “new” being used in a strictly relative sense!

Windsor Castle History

Windsor Castle was first built by William the Conqueror, following his invasion of England in 1066. The original structure was built from timber with earth fortifications. The Castle held an obvious strategic position on a steep hill overlooking the River Thames, and was part of a ring of castles around London, with the Tower of London, one day’s march away, at its heart.

The Castle was later rebuilt in stone, and grew in importance over the years. Henry II constructed the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the Castle’s primary role became that of a royal palace. The Castle has remained largely unchanged since the early nineteenth century, apart from the restoration work following the fire (see below).   [ BOOK TICKETS ]

The Fire at Windsor Castle

The Fire of Windsor Castle took place on 20 November 1992 – ironically the 45th wedding anniversary of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. During work on some of the State Rooms in the castle, a fire broke out in the north-east part of the Castle and rapidly spread to engulf many rooms.

The Fire at Windsor Castle 1992

Fortunately most treasures and works of art had been removed temporarily and so few items were lost, although over 100 rooms in the Castle were badly damaged or destroyed. The fire took 250 firefighters some 15 hours to extinguish. The Castle was renovated, the aim being to restore the damaged rooms to their former glory using authentic materials and craftsmanship, and was re-opened in 1997 after five years of work. The cost of the renovation was £37 million.  More on Wikipedia .

Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard is one of the highlights of a visit to Windsor. A band usually accompanies the Guards, although this is subject to weather conditions.

The Guards can be watched as they march up the High Street and into the Castle, but to see the actual ‘changing’ ceremony you need to have paid to go into the Castle. The Ceremony takes place outside the Guardroom in the Lower Ward of the Castle. To watch the Guards march up the High Street takes only 10 minutes; to watch the actual ceremony inside the Castle takes about 30 minutes.

windsor castle tour tickets

The Guard March takes place all year round, dependant on the weather. The Guards march on alternate days from August to March and daily during April, May, June and July, but never on a Sunday. The schedule (see final paragraph) is set by the British Army and is subject to change.

To watch the new Guards march up the High Street you need to be positioned in the High Street at 10.50am. Once inside the Castle, the Guards change outside the Guardroom in the Lower Ward at 11.00am. The sentries are changed throughout the day. The old Guards then march back to the barracks at about 11.25am.

Please note that traffic is stopped when the guards make their way between the barracks on Sheet Street, along the High Street and into the Castle. Traffic Wardens and Police control traffic on the following approaches to the centre of town: Thames Street, the junction of Victoria Street and Sheet Street and near the junction of Frances Road and Sheet Street. Traffic is usually stopped between 10.45am and 11am (as the guards march to the Castle) and between 11.15am and 11.30am (as they return to the Barracks).

Changing the Guard takes place:

The ceremony usually takes place at 11:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but the schedule can change, check the  British Army website  for details. The guards march through Windsor town into the Castle, where the guard change takes place.

Changing of the Guard does not take place on Sunday

Provisional Schedule  (please note that this schedule is set by the British Army and is subject to change).

The Castle is a pleasure to walk around. As you proceed through the various wards and terraces, you will have excellent views of the Round Tower, of the various fortifications, and of the surrounding countryside, including Eton and the River Thames.

Saint George’s Chapel

The magnificent and beautiful St George’s Chapel was started in 1475 by Edward IV and was completed fifty years later by Henry VIII. It ranks among the finest examples of late medieval architecture (perpendicular gothic) in the UK. Ten monarchs are buried in the Chapel, including Henry VIII with his wife Jane Seymour. The Chapel is the Chapel of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Britain’s highest Order of Chivalry. The Order was founded by Edward III in 1348 and the Garter Knights are selected by the Queen. The Ceremony of the Garter takes place on 14th June 1999, and is attended by the Garter Knights, the Queen and members of the Royal Family.

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House

Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House  is an amazing dolls’ house built on a scale of 1 to 12. It contains working lifts, running water and electricity, and took 1500 craftsmen three years to complete.

The idea of creating a dolls’ house for the Queen was that of the King’s cousin, Princess Marie Louise.

After returning home from a visit to the King and Queen at Windsor Castle, during which they had shown her much kindness, Princess Marie Louise found her mother and her sister assembling a collection of miniature furniture for Queen Mary.

Queen Mary was known as a collector of miniature objects including Fabergé animals, children’s silver furniture and other examples of ‘tiny craft’. This gave Princess Marie Louise an idea. She announced to her family that she would commission a dolls’ house as a present for the Queen…

Historic Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the United Kingdom. Its history dates back to the 11th century when it was built by William the Conqueror as a motte-and-bailey castle. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and modified by many monarchs, including Henry II, Edward III, and George IV. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural beauty of England.

One of the most significant moments in Windsor Castle's history was during the reign of Edward III. He transformed the castle into a luxurious palace and built St. George's Chapel, which became the official chapel of the Order of the Garter. The chapel's intricate designs and beautiful stained-glass windows are a testament to the architectural achievements of the time.

Throughout history, Windsor Castle has been the site of many royal events. One of the most notable was the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, which took place in St. George's Chapel. The castle has also been the setting for many state visits and official receptions.
