Memories made at Crooked Creek

Alexander D. from IL 2023

I just got back from the trip, and for now, this is going to be my temporary review with 5 stars. There is a lot to say, and describe, all I can say for now: it's worth every single penny that you spend, the service, the food, the views, the handling absolutely everything it top service. Miss Dorothy, Lindsey, and her entire crew will not leave you disappointed.

Oh, and last thing, lots and lots of fish!!!!

David B. from LA 2021

Crooked Creek lodge is amazing!! That really says it all. Dorothy welcomed us and told us from before we arrived if we needed anything at all, just let her know and she would do her best. Before arrival we had so many choices of things to do during our stay but she really helped in figuring it out for us. This was our first trip to Alaska and Crooked Creek made the stay so enjoyable. The nightly meals were just wonderful and having the opportunity to share stories each night with the other guests was so much nicer than eating at a restaurant by ourselves. It was so nice to have them pack us a lunch for the days adventure. They even packed a special lunch and did special meals for my son who is a picky eater. We had incredible experiences fishing, seeing scenery, and meeting the wonderful people of Alaska. If this is your first or 10’th time traveling to Alaska, you should contact Crooked Creek about staying at their lodge. Words are just hard to describe the wonderful time we had. I am ready to book my next stay already!!

Chris S. from SC 2023

Dorothy and her team are nothing short of amazing. We were spoiled from day 1, and didn't have to worry about any aspect of our trip; from meals to guides. They took a bucket list trip for my son and I and turned it into a life changing experience where we got to see beyond the tourist areas to real Alaska. I will never be able to say enough good things about Crooked Creek!

Ken H. from UT 2023

We had such a sun trip to Alaska and thank Crooked Creek Retreat for making our experience so memorable. We simply let Lindsey know what activities we wanted to participate in and everything was set up from there. Our food, accommodations, and our daily activities were top-notch. Lindsey and Dorothy were exceptional hosts, and we'd love to return sometime soon.

Ernest J. from OH 2022

My son and I just spent a fabulous week at the Crooked Creek Retreat and it was one of the best weeks of my life. From the first day, being greated by Dorothy, Lindsey and Remy the resident dog, the week only got better each day. Their responsiveness to whatever we needed was nothing less than first class. They kept us well fed and informed each day of what was going on the next day. When to get up, where to be and how long it would take to get there. Each day was a treat to be at the Retreat. They were flexible with excursions we wanted, adding a fly in trip that ended up being the best and most productive of all. I want to thank them for a memorable experience that will never be forgotten . Highly recommend them.

Letter From Lindsey

I invite you to come spend a week with us in our lodge, Crooked Creek Outfitters.  The doors were first opened by my mother, Dorothy, in July 2007 and we have been growing ever since.  She built this lodge log by log alongside her family.  My niece and I helped pull wire for outlets – it was truly a family affair!  The lodge is her primary residence, so she is here year-round.  At the end of the 2023 season she decided to step back just a little from the daily operations and even though I had already been managing the lodge with her, she left big shoes to fill!  But not to worry- she is still at the lodge full-time and you will still get to see her and chat with her when you visit.

What makes us special is that we take care of all the details.  Our goal is to make sure you have the best experience possible from the moment you arrive until we are waving goodbye as you are pulling out of the driveway.

I know that it is difficult to pick the right location and then the right outfitter when there are so many on the web.  The Kenai Peninsula gives you accessibility and variety.  Most remote lodges and lodges in the southeast you fish the same thing and the same place every day.  On the Peninsula you will have variety- salt fishing halibut and multi-species, salmon, trout, rivers, lakes, streams, something different every day, or repeat your favorite.

Arrange your flight from your hometown into Anchorage, rent a car, and drive down to us or fly into the Kenai airport and you can rent a car there.  With a vehicle you can go out and about for sight-seeing and other activities.

I would love to have you stay with us for the first time or visit us again.  All of you who have stayed with us in the past helped make the last many years a great success.  You have made memories together with Dorothy, and I have truly enjoyed making memories with you as well.  I would love to see you again or meeting you for the first time!

I will welcome you like your favorite cousin would- I will take care of details, serve wonderful fresh food, and schedule the best activities and fishing trips I can.  You will love it here and immediately feel at home once you walk in the front door.  We have worked hard to make this a high-end lodge/outfitter and balance that with real, down-home comfort.  I love to see our guests down at the fire pit throwing horseshoes or sitting around the tables after dinner laughing.  When the cars pull in, I can't wait to hear how your day was.  Sometimes my daughter, Ruth, or my husband, Jonathan, will come to help grab lunch boxes and want to hear your stories too.  This is a family business built with love, and after you stay with us, you’re family too!  Come join us!

I look forward to hearing from you,

Owner/Outfitter

guest review

My family . . . spent the week with Alaska Hooksetters the last week in July. We had a wonderful time - one cannot discount the convenience of having everything planned for you. They though of everything! The food was delightful as well - from the appetizers straight through to desserts every evening. The lodge is centrally located to many of the outings/fishing trips we wanted to go on. We are already making our bucket list for the next time we get to go!

Thank you Glenn, Karen, Carmen & Heather. This week has been amazing. The memories made this week will last a lifetime. You have made this week one of the best trips ever that I have taken. Tons of fish, time by the firepit, great food, but most importantly, your care and kindness. Thank you again for making this so special.

A hearty thanks to: Glenn, Karen, Carmen, Heather, Austin, Josh, James, Mike for your kindness, patience, warmth, guidance & service. Extra shout out to Heather and Carmen for all the wonderful soups, appetizers, dinners and desserts... Hoping to have gained less than 10 pounds, couldn't stop eating.

A huge thank you to you all! This has been the best Father, Son experience I could have imagined! God bess you in your business and all you do.

- Steve & Colin

It has been a great week. I made some great memories with my nephew and great nephew and we are going home with some fish. The staff here at Hooksetters have been awesome. We met some very nice people around the campfire. I enjoyed sharing fishing tales and life stories. This trip was a lifetime dream and on my bucketlist. Alaska Hooksetters delivered. It was everything I hoped for. I hope to return someday.

All I can say is THank you! Thank you! Thank you! Unbelievable week couldn't of have a better time! The food and hospitality was amazing! We'll be back!!!

What a great week! We've been thinking about fishing Alaska forever and now the week is over. Already thinking about when I'm coming back! Thank you all! Tight lines, good food, great people!

Just like that, it's over... We had another great stay here @ Alaska Hooksetters. This time we lacked the company of the Nortons, but we still managed to meet new people and have a great time. The last time we came. I would say we caught "SOME" fish. This time, we did incredible, limiting out every day except one. It was a bummer we couldn't fish for kings this year, but that only means one thing... we'll be back! THank you, Glenn and Karen!

Alaska is generous during our peak fishing season – the fish are hunting and the sun stays up until midnight. You’ll love taking a skiff out on your own – we’re just minutes away from beautiful freshwater stream-fishing, and some of our guests’ biggest halibut catches have been reeled in on a skiff.

Experience Alaska Your Way

Pybus Bay has some of the world’s best fishing, and our experienced guides and charter, custom-built boats will keep you on the fish – halibut, five species of salmon, rockfish, yelloweye, ling cod, and more. Get every minute out of our long summer days after a full day with your guide – take a kayak or motorized skiff into Pybus Bay and enjoy the long Alaskan sunset. It’s all included.

THE PYBUS EXPERIENCE

There is world-class saltwater fishing here in Southeast Alaska, to be sure. But the Pybus Bay experience is so much more than just fishing. Come experience Alaska for yourself – you’ll understand why Pybus Point Lodge guests tell us this place changed them.

FISHING SEASON

Hook, line, and sinker..

alaska fishing trips for families

Discover why people like you can’t stop talking about Pybus Point Lodge. More than 30 years ago, the lodge opened as a simple fishing camp, drawing a devoted following in spite of basic accommodations. With new owners and experienced captains and crew, our corner of Alaska has become an unbeatable fishing and eco-tourism resort. ‍

Incredible Experience!

Pybus Point Lodge has some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. I mean absolutely breathtaking! In addition to the amazing fishing, I hiked to a beautiful secluded lake, soaked in some hot pots, saw several waterfalls, went whale watching, saw bears and all kinds of wildlife and marine life. As a photographer, photographing a wedding under a waterfall will remain a highlight of my life.

Shirley Johnson

Pybus Point Lodge - WOW!

We had the best time! This was our first visit to Pybus, but it definitely will not be our last. The stunning scenery, amazing fishing experience, and the joy of meeting new friends – all outstanding! We did not want to leave!!! If you are thinking about this trip – don’t think any more, just book it. You will not regret it!!!

Sharon Hedding

Wonderful and Magical Place

We had an amazing business retreat to Pybus Point Lodge.  Everything was top notch... the fishing, the staff, the boat captains, the food, the accommodations, and especially the scenery. I really liked that Pybus took care of everything from start to finish. Chef John is an amazing cook. We had delicious hot meals the entire trip.  The cabins were amazing and very comfortable.  The fishing was awesome and that’s coming from a guy that doesn’t fish that much.

Brandon Foote

We brought home 100lbs of fish!

My wife and I spent a week at Pybus Point this Summer. We had a beautiful, private room overlooking the bay and our own new, ensuite, private bathroom. What an amazing place for couples to get away together. We set our own breakfast time, met our boat captain after, fished the day along, and returned to clean up and enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant. Next time Alaska is on the trip list, Sherrie and I will go together, and it will be to Pybus Point!

Kent Danjanovich

Fun in Alaska

This was my first trip to Pybus Point. I stayed in one of their new cabins. The accommodations were incredible, the view onto the bay in the mornings was stunning. I loved the staff and the food was really very good. All of this and they have new boats to take you out onto fairly calm waters to fish. The fishing guides were great. Overall a great experience. Definitely going back.

Cell Tower & WiFi

Pybus Point Lodge is located on the remote and secluded far south edge of Admiralty Island National Monument. Coverage is always tricky in deep valleys and remote natural areas. We found that AT&T has the most reliable cellular service at the lodge while T-mobile, Sprint, and Verizon can be picked up while out on the ocean. We do have a lodge phone you can use if necessary. If you can't get a signal, we do provide free high-speed WIFI to the lodge and cabins. A popular option is to utilize your phones WIFI calling mode to communicate and take calls while at the cabin, although we prefer to unplug and enjoy all that the island has to offer.

Humpback whale watching

The calm, cool waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage are the perfect habitat for humpback whales. Our guests tell us close encounters with these peaceful giants have changed the way they see the world – and we know just what they mean.

Fortress of the Bears

You’ll stay with us on Admiralty Island, called Xootsnoowú by native Tlingit people, which means “Fortress of the Bears.” There are more bears on our island than in all 49 other states combined – and more than 2.5x the number of people here!

Seals & Sea Lions

A short ride in one of our skiffs will take you to the mouth of a river where, if your timing is right, you can watch salmon make their final run to spawn. When it isn’t overrun by bears dining on the feast, you can walk upstream just a few minutes to a beautiful waterfall in the thick forest.

Orca (killer whale) Spotting

From tiny phosphorescent algae lighting up our private docks to enormous humpback whales hunting in our deep, calm waters, you won’t find a more beautiful place to experience Alaska. Pybus Bay is a photographer’s paradise – bald eagles and brown bears, orca, otters and sea lions, and more. We can’t wait to help you experience Alaska.

Secluded Alaskan Waterfalls

Sawyer glacier day trip.

Take quick detours or day-long excursions to explore some of our planet's most beautiful, remote waterfalls and glaciers.

a king salmon caught while on an alaska family fishing trip

May and June

May and June are excellent months for King salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska, particularly in Sitka, Alaska. Cod and rockfish are also very plentiful during these fishing months.

July and August

July and August are considered by some to be the prime months to fish in Alaska due to variety of salmon. In Southeast Alaska, King salmon peak from mid-June to mid-July and silver salmon peak from early August to early September. The bottom fishing for halibut, cod and rockfish remains fairly consistent all summer long.

Early to mid September is an excellent month for halibut fishing and Silver salmon fishing. In September, the fall foliage also starts to emerge, making it a picturesque time to enjoy the natural beauty of Alaska while on your fishing adventure.

Where to Go: Top Alaska Family Fishing Destinations

Alaska offers a wide variety of fishing destinations, each with its unique attractions and fishing opportunities.

Why choose Sitka, Alaska:

Located in Southeast Alaska, Sitka offers some of the best saltwater fishing in the state, including halibut, king salmon, and other species. The island is also home to a variety of wildlife, including humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, seals and otters.

How to Plan Your Alaska Family Fishing Trip

Planning an Alaska family fishing trip can seem overwhelming, but with the right preparation and guidance, it can be a fun and stress-free experience. Here are some tips for planning your ultimate family fishing adventure in Alaska:

Choose your destination: Decide which part of Alaska you want to visit and what type of fishing you want to do. Consider the time of year you plan to visit and the species of fish you want to catch.

Book your all-inclusive lodge: All-inclusive lodges offer a change to relax and unwind in a beautiful natural setting, offering the convenience of having everything you need in one place.

Pack appropriately: Alaska's weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to pack for all conditions. We recommend bringing warm under layers as all of the rain gear is provided.

Consider other activities: While fishing is the main attraction, there are many other activities to enjoy in Alaska, such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and sightseeing. Plan some downtime in your itinerary to explore the area and create lasting memories with your family.

If I had my choice for a super fun day on the water, fishing with kids would be right up there! Though we have fun on all of our trips, there's nothing like seeing kids light up when they "get it" and fall in love with the sport of fishing and especially fly fishing!

One of the biggest advantages we have in on the Kenai River in Alaska when it comes to fishing with kids, is the sheer number of fish, their size and their willingness to bite. This translates to great opportunities to get kids into the sport and have a realistic chance of catching something and when timed right, they'll have the chance at catching a lot!

Fishing Alaska for Kids

Many families make the journey to the Kenai Peninsula and Cooper Landing , AK annually and probably one of the most common questions we get is: can we bring our kids along? My answer is yes, yes, and more yes! Depending on their age, kids do quite well on fishing trips. Generally half day and full day options are available, so it's best to match your kid's attention span with how long you think they could be out on the water. For younger kids, a half day works well; although, I've had kids literally beg to stay out longer!

Over the past couple of years, I've noticed that kids always start out the trip super enthusiastic, but can quickly get frustrated or disinterested if the action doesn't happen right away. The key is keeping kids engaged and get them involved with some sort of responsibility on the boat. I generally focus most of my attention on kids on family trips to keep an eye on their level of engagement. All parents know that when the kids aren't happy, no one's happy! Having a guide or guide service that is enthusiastic about kids is a must!

For nearly guaranteed non-stop action, the middle of August through the middle of September can be lights out for catch and release Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden fishing. Though a lot of kids are back in school by this point, if there is ever a sure time of year to get kids "hooked," this would be it! It is also a great time for Silver Salmon as well if you're looking for fish to take home. Great fishing can also be had during late July and early August when the Sockeye Salmon run is at its peak.

Fishing Gear & Techniques for Kids

When fishing with kids, we use a variety of techniques, most of which centers on the species and time of year. We do have special kid-specific fly rods that we love to break out when the time is right! Getting kids into fly fishing is rather easy in Alaska as the casting techniques required are very basic. We also use trolling rods and spinning gear to chase other species and when the fishing isn't as hot for species like trout.

Most fishing you'll find on the Kenai River will be done by boat. Not only is it difficult to wade the Kenai during the summer, it is also difficult to safely wade with children. Though we do get out of the boat on many of our trips with kids, we take extra precautions as the water is very swift and cold (lifejackets are an absolute must, even when wading).

Another advantage we have on the Kenai Peninsula is the proximity to many towns and cities with lots of kid-friendly activities. Everything from fishing to hiking, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, kayaking, aquariums, etc... We are also an easy commute from Anchorage with lots to see and do on your way here!

If you are having any reservations about taking kids fishing in Alaska, I would say there's no better place than Alaska to go for it!

Owner/Guide for Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC located in the small mountain town of Cooper Landing, Alaska where he is a year-round resident, guide, carpenter and trout bum. On any given day, you will most likely find Dave on the banks of the Kenai swinging for trout with his best friend and future wife, Jackie. Dave spent most days of his youth wading the waters of upstate New York fishing for smallmouth bass, muskie, pike and walleye. His journey to Alaska was sparked by a chance fishing trip on the Salmon River in New York with Mike Harpe, a legendary guide on the Kenai River. After the fishing day was done, Mike invited Dave to Alaska to fish the mighty Kenai River. At that time, Dave thought fishing Alaska was a pipe dream and didn't arrive in Alaska until several years later to take Mike up on his offer to fish the Kenai with him. Once in Alaska, Dave fell in love with the Kenai's mystical waters and the amazing fishing opportunities. He began his guiding career almost immediately and found a place to call home. Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC was built in early 2017 with the goal of sharing the love and passion Dave and Jackie have for the Kenai Peninsula and the fish that live there.
