Bike Tour FAQs

Should i tip my bike tour guide.

While not mandatory, tipping is appropriate and our guides certainly appreciate it for a job well done! As in other service-based industries, tipping encourages the outstanding service that our guides continue to provide. Please consider this when planning your monetary needs on the tour.

What time should I arrive for the tour? What if I’m late?

Please arrive no less than 15 minutes in advance of your tour departure so that you have time to sign a waiver form and be fitted for bike and helmet.

Tours start promptly at the time stated. We cannot wait for late guests as this affects the experience of other riders. If you are late, please try calling as we may be able to help you catch up to the group.

Where do the bike tours start and end?

All Cycle City bike tours depart from and return to our shop at 648 Hornby Street .

Do I have to book a bike tour in advance?

Yes, please book a bike tour in advance as space is limited. You can book your desired tour and departure time on our bookings page . If you’d like to join a tour departing in the next 24 hours, please  contact us  directly to see if we can find you a place.

What if it rains on the day of my bike tour?

Our city is located in a Temperate Coastal Rainforest climate, so it does rain here regularly. As Vancouverites, we don’t let “liquid sunshine” keep us from riding and our tours depart rain or shine. You can still have an amazing tour if dressed for the weather, and we provide light ponchos for your use.

Our 24 hour cancellation policy allows you to cancel the day before if the forecast looks bad.  Tour guests can now also pay an additional 7% fee to extend the cancellation policy to 1 Hr before departure for those that prefer to make a last minute decision.

Please Note: June, July, August and September are typically the driest months of the year, but it is wise to bring along an extra layer just in case the forecast indicates a chance of rain ( local forecast ).

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your booking for a full refund with minimum 24 hours notice before your departure time. Due to limited space on our public tours, no refund is possible within 24 hours of tour departure. Read our cancellation policy for more details.

Please Note: We may be able to reschedule your booking if unforeseen circumstances arise. This is based on tour availability.

What Our Guests Are Saying

“A fantastic way to see Stanley Park in all its glory! Cycling through the park we saw the Lost and Beaver Lake plus the stories behind them. The sea wall is spectacular as are the totem poles! We went through a little gap and onto trails leading through, what we described as an ‘enchanted forest’ and could’ve been easily missed if we didn’t have our fabulous guide. Even on the way to the park we stopped off at some historic houses and learnt their background. Highly recommend this tour for anybody!!! Loved it!”

“We had a wonderful time on this last-minute booked bike tour around Stanley Park. Our guide Andrew was great, and the biking was very easy (only maybe 2 short hills)”

“We started our bike trip with some rain but Andrew was prepared, he had plastic ponchos for us and off we went. We enjoyed his presentation about Vancouver and Stanley Park. Would highly recommend.”

“Highly recommend Toonie Bike tours. One of our group was anxious about the tour, but Andrew created a 5-star experience for us, making us feel as if we were the only ones on the tour. He used his humor and vast knowledge of history to create a safe & fantastic bike ride for us. We even learned some photography tips along the way. It was a novel way to spend half a day in Vancouver and get a sense of all the primary areas.”

How large are the average  tour groups?

Our average group size is between 4 - 8 riders. Smaller group sizes create a safer riding environment and provide adequate space for social distancing.

Are there safe bike paths in Vancouver for novice riders?

Yes. Our tours utilize a combination of city bike lanes, the Vancouver seawall and calmed traffic streets. Our afternoon tour includes some street riding. For novice and younger riders, we suggest ‘Stanley Park Discovery' or a private tour where riding is limited to the seawall.

How are bike riders treated by motorists in Vancouver?

Vancouver motorists are very accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists. Our city also has one of the most expansive network of bike paths in North America.

Is there a safety demonstration at the start of the ride?

Yes. Each tour starts with a quick orientation of safety procedures and basic riding mechanics.

What kind of bikes are provided for the tours?

We use Specialized Sirrus X 3.0  hybrid bikes for our tours. These bikes have a wide range of gears, disc brakes and an extremely light frame. The Sirrus is a perfect bike for light city touring.

For riders with mobility concerns, we also have the option to use Specialized Roll  cruiser bikes, for those riders seeking a step-through frame and a wider seat.

Do you have trailers for smaller children?

Yes. We have trailers and tag-along attachments for our bikes. If you require either of these, please email us about a private family tour. We also have a dog trailer, if you want to bring your four-legged friends along.

Do you have child size bikes?

Yes. We have 20” and 24” inch frames for younger riders. Families with children who require these frames will need to book a private tour.

Can I bring my own bike?

Riders are always welcome to bring their own bikes.

Can I use a Mobi bike (public bike share) for the tour?

We strongly discourage this for two reasons: 1) The Mobi bikes are meant for short commutes, not touring. 2) The Mobi bikes have  a very limited range of gears and are not always reliable.

What sort of physical shape do I need to be in to take a bicycle tour?

Our tours are curated to feature routes and lengths that are appropriate for all riders.

What is the total distance covered on your tours?

All three of our tours are roughly 18 km (11 miles).

Are there hills on the tour?

There is a small hill at the start of our ‘Stanley Park Discovery’ tour but the majority of the route is on flat terrain. Our ‘Heroes of Van City’ tour is almost completely flat. Our ‘Murals off Main St.’ tour includes a larger elevation gain, but we take our time on all the hills.

What ages are the bicycle tours appropriate for?

The recommended minimum age for our daily mixed tours is 13. Families with younger riders are encouraged to book private family tours. Our oldest rider to date was 85.

Where do the tours start and finish?

All of our tours start and finish at English Bay Bicycle Rentals at 1754 Davie Street , in Vancouver’s West End. This location is only a few blocks from Stanley Park.

Is there parking close to the bike shop?

There is limited street vehicle parking in downtown Vancouver. There is a small underground parking lot behind JJ Bean (coffee shop) at the corner of Davie and Bidwell. There are larger parking lots around the perimeter of Stanley Park. It is a 15-20 minute walk from these lots to the bike shop.

How do you recommend travelling to English Bay Bike Rentals from our hotel?

We recommend walking, public transit or UBER to get to the bike shop.

Our location is a 15-40 minute walk from most of the larger downtown hotels.

The number 6 Downtown bus stops 5 feet from our front door. For transit schedules and routes, please use the the ‘ Trip Planner ’ tool provided by TransLink on their easy to use website.

The taxi fare from most hotels downtown is $8-12 and takes 5-15 minutes. Fares can be paid by cash, debit or credit card.

UBER and Lyft  now operate in Vancouver.

What should I wear on the day of my ride?

We suggest athletic clothing with layers that can be removed or added. We also suggest close-toed shoes, sunglasses in the summer months, gloves during the shoulder and winter seasons and sunscreen all year round, no matter the conditions.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE

Water & washrooms.

Do you provide water?

Yes. We provide a 750ml water bottle for all our riders.

Are there washrooms on site?

No. There are no public washrooms on site. There is a Starbucks across the street for last minute bathroom needs.

Are there bathroom breaks?

Yes. All our tours stop at locations with washrooms. If an emergency stop is required, please notify the guide and we will find the closest coffee shop.

GRATUITIES & REVIEWS

Is it appropriate to tip your bicycle guide?

If you feel that you received outstanding service, a cash tip is very appropriate. Tipping is very much appreciated by those working in the North American service sector, but it  is by no means mandatory. Canada does not offer a Venmo option at this time.

How can I rea d or review one of your bicycle tours?

Our tours have been reviewed on TripAdivor , Yelp and Google . We are proud to stay we have a perfect 5-star rating on all three of these platforms. You can find links to these sites at our review section .

We strongly encourage our guests to review our tours, as it helps us grow and refine our product.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly and we will get back to you as quick as possible. Email, at [email protected] , is the best method of communication. We look forward to hearing from you.

Grow your cycling skills at Heights Bike Garden set to open at old Tower Mall site

Project at central vancouver site designed to help riders of all ages be better cyclists.

Here’s a graphic that shows the overall design of the Heights Bike Garden.

A paved but off-street and carless space where cyclists can safely practice their riding skills is coming to the vacant Tower Mall redevelopment site in central Vancouver. A grand opening of the new Heights Bike Garden is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 5411 E. Mill Plain Blvd.

What’s a bike garden? It’s a kid-sized, model streetscape where fledgling bike riders of any age can safely sharpen their skills — or just tootle around in confidence, knowing no cars will cross their paths.

“The intent is to help children learn the rules of the road without being on an actual road,” city project manager Amy Stewart said. “They’re also known as traffic gardens, and they’re all over the country, but I believe this is the first one in Southwest Washington.”

The Heights Bike Garden is almost two blocks in size, Stewart said, making it one of the largest in the U.S. Its little roadways, intersections, roundabouts, stop and yield signs, pedestrian crosswalks, and other features were recently painted by volunteers onto a section of the Tower Mall parking lot surface, just east of River Maiden Coffee.

The bike garden layout was created by First Forty Feet , a Portland urban design firm, with input from East Coast consultant Discover Traffic Gardens . The center of the two-block layout is a painted pedestrian island featuring colorful street murals, as well as real picnic tables.

“We’ve heard a lot of excitement from the community. We think it’ll be well used,” Stewart said.

As of the Saturday grand opening, the bike garden will be free and open for all (with nonmotorized vehicles only) to use from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day, Stewart said. Bike Clark County volunteers will be on hand for the grand opening, and the nonprofit may use the layout after that for its own periodic bike-training sessions, she said.

The same security detail that patrols the Tower Mall site will keep an eye on the bike garden too, she said. Adjacent construction areas will remain fenced off.

According to news outlet BikePortland , bike gardens started blooming in Europe in the 1950s. Many appeared in and around Portland during the first summer of the COVID-19 pandemic — a time when safe outdoor recreation was widely sought, but many public recreation facilities were closed. Homemade bike garden layouts have been created with everything from sidewalk chalk to spray paint to plastic cups to orange traffic cones.

Because redevelopment of the former Tower Mall site is an ongoing city project, the Heights Bike Garden is expected to be temporary — lasting perhaps a couple years before new construction moves in, Stewart said.

City of Vancouver to open 'bike garden'

VANCOUVER, Wash. (KPTV) - The City of Vancouver is getting ready to open up its very first “bike garden.”

The bike garden, located in the 5400 block of Mill Plain Boulevard, will be a car-free zone so people can ride their bikes, develop cycling skills, and learn about pedestrian safety. It’s the first-of-its-kind in southwest Washington and will be one of the largest bike gardens in the world, the city says.

It’s called the “Heights Bike Garden” and is part of the city’s plan to develop the area into a walkable mixed-use neighborhood in the heart of Vancouver.

The grand opening of the new bike garden will be happening on Saturday. The opening celebration starts at 10 a.m. and will run until 1 p.m. Helmets are required, there are restrooms available on site, and there is limited shade so take water.

There is also some free parking there but the city says it is limited.
