Connecticut Lighthouses: Bridgeport to Stratford Region

Heading Eastward Through Fairfield, Bridgeport, and Stratford

Connecticut’s rocky shoreline and its many treacherous ledges and islands in Fisher’s Island Sound and Long Island Sound, constantly kept mariners on the alert, claiming the lives of many during New England’s fierce storms. Lighthouses were built to help the increasing shipping traffic and local mariners during these storms, many on those dangerous islands and ledges.

Lighthouses were built in the Stratford region around Stratford Harbor due to the consistent foggy weather, and on the dangerous Stratford Shoal.

Bridgeport had become a major commercial fishing port so one was built on nearby Fayerweather Island to guide mariners into Black Rock Harbor, another built on the end of a protective breakwater in Bridgeport's inner harbor along with another light (recently destroyed Bridgeport Harbor Light), and on Penfield Reef, a much needed lighthouse was built on what is considered to be one of the most treacherous ledges in Long Island Sound.

Note: Of all of Connecticut's 20 lighthouses, fifteen lighthouses are best viewed closely by boat, or you need to take a boat or ferry to access the lighthouse, and only five lighthouses are easily accessible to visit for close views by car.

Fairfield Connecticut provides fine beaches, parks, cultural events, and quiet places to hike and walk around this scenic area.

Nearby you'll find the Birdcraft Museum & Sanctuary , the oldest private songbird sanctuary in America.

The historic city of Bridgeport offers plenty of diverse cultural events, the Barnum Museum , home of PT Barnum's circus impresario of the 1800's, and the Beardsley Zoo. For those who want a more historic venue, Boothe Memorial Park and Museum sits on a 32-acre site believed to be the oldest homestead in America.

The Dundon House, a building constructed in Victorian Era design, features an exhibit of Bridgeport’s maritime history, its 3 local lighthouses, and historical artifacts relating to the oyster industry in Connecticut. The collections include plenty of photos, models, and eighteenth century navigational instruments. 

Captain’s Cove Seaport is a complex of buildings that includes an amusement center, a 400-seat restaurant, lots of specialty shops resembling a typical seaport village, and it promotes music festivals and events.

It provides scenic views of the area with the beach area and the park is well maintained.

Hiking to the end of the breakwater, you'll find Black Harbor (Fayerweather Island) Lighthouse tower, in the process of getting funding for restoration, and you can get a distant view of Penfiled Reef light. Nice views of the beacon can also be found from a boat.

Visitors who are looking for natural public wildlife resources will enjoy the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge .

A popular place for birding is Stratford Point Island, and in the early autumn, tens of thousands of migrating monarch butterflies appear on the island.

The lighthouse is a private residence and grounds are closed to the public.

Boat Tours: Connecticut's Bridgeport Region

After the pandemic, some lighthouse tours that were originally offered in the Bridgeport region now remain unavailable. However, this will be updated should any lighthouse tours become available. 

Stratford Point Light, Black Rock Harbor (Fayerweather Island) Light, and even Tongue Point Light you can view close up from the shore. To view Penfield Reef Light and Stratford Shoal (Middleground) Light you may be able to see these lighthouses as part of fishing charters and excursions offered by some local mariners that may pass by one of these lighthouses, depending on direction of schools of fish.

Project Oceanology, Groton, CT

Kids and adults alike will get a taste of being a marine biologist with a public boat cruise run by Project O. Summertime cruises allow participants to use oceanographic equipment to monitor the waters of the Long Island Sound, while spring cruises take you to watch the Harbor Seals near Fishers Island. Sabino Steamboat, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT

See the Mystic Seaport and downtown Mystic from a different vantage point by taking a cruise down the Mystic River on this historic 1908 steamboat. This ship is considered a National Historic Landmark as it is one of the last operating coal-fired steamboats, making any cruise even more special for visitors. First discovered in 1614 by Adrien Block , these islands were used for everything from farming to quarrying granite, from bootlegging to hiding Captain Kidd’s treasure. Captain Kidd sailed here in 1665…you can still feel his presence today.

Join Captains Mike, Justin, Bryan and the crew of the Sea Mist as you tour the famous Thimble Islands off the coast of Branford, Connecticut. For nearly sixty years, 1000s of seafarers have enjoyed tours and charters of the Long Island Sound with Thimble Island Cruise.

Our Vessels

The Sea Mist is a 44' Carman Boat of Chesapeake design. This vessel was designed with large windows and comfortable seating for sightseeing and private cruises to enjoy cocktails or dinner with friends and family. There are two observation decks. The lower deck is equipped with a full heating system and the interior can be completely sheltered for inclement weather. The upper deck is open to the breeze for observation and photos. Departs from the Stony Creek Dock! Thimble Islands!

Island Time

Our new vessel, "Island Time" is a 40' Catamaran powered by twin 300HP Suzuki Outboards. There is perimeter seating for 28 passengers. We have a bar on board providing beverages. There is a head on board. Departing from Bruce & Johnson's Safe Harbor Marina. Cruising the Branford River & the Branford Coast.

This does not do the Thimble Island Tour!

After the sightseeing tours on SEA MIST, we transform our vessel into a private charter boat for a party or dinner cruise. You can bring your own food or have it completely catered. We do have a full bar on board for your beverage needs and for a two hour or more charter.  We suggest, if you are just going to party or have hors d’oeuvres that you invite 38 or less. For dinner, we suggest 26 to 34 persons. Enjoy a 2 hour  cruise as the scenery slowly changes along the coastline of Branford and up the Branford River, the Thimble Islands and coastal Guilford to Sachems Head.

Search to resume Wednesday for 2 people missing after deadly boat crash in Old Saybrook

One person has died after a boat crash in Old Saybrook Monday night, two others are missing and five people are in the hospital. The search for the two missing men was suspended overnight and will resume Wednesday morning.

Nine people were on the 31-foot motorboat that struck a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday while returning from Block Island, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.

Several 911 calls came in about the crash and rescue crews found the boat half submerged and significantly damaged.

One man was found dead in the vessel and six people were taken to the hospital, according to DEEP. One person is in critical condition, Captain Keith Williams, of Connecticut Environmental Police, said Tuesday morning. They believe that person was driving the boat, but they have not confirmed that.

Williams said he believes one person has been released from the hospital. The extent of the injuries the others sustained has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing, but Williams said they believe all nine people are friends who went to Block Island for the day.

The capsized boat was recovered from the river on Tuesday and it was pulled from the water around 11:30 a.m.

Williams said Tuesday morning that the tide was coming in when the boat crashed.

Multiple agencies, including police and fire crews from several nearby towns, the State Police Dive Unit, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard station on Cape Cod were searching and the search was suspended overnight.

It resumed Tuesday morning and continued for the majority of the day before suspending at 7:30 p.m.

Triple-Fatal Old Saybrook Boating Accident Update: Bodies Of 2 Missing Persons Now Located

The search continues for one missing victim of a boat crash in Old Saybrook. 

As the fifth day of searching continued, the bodies of both missing Connecticut boaters from a Labor Day crash on Long Island Sound were found by divers.

The accident, which has now killed three, occurred in Middlesex County in Old Saybrook on Long Island Sound around 9:15 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2.

According to Will Healey, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Police, multiple agencies responded and found a single 31-foot open motorboat floating, half-submerged, near the Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook.

Healey said the vessel had hit the east-facing break wall at the mouth of the Connecticut River, leaving two missing in the water.

A total of nine people were on the boat. Middlesex County resident Christopher Hallahan, age 34, of Westbrook, died in the crash and was found when first responders arrived at the crash scene; six other people were transported to the hospital, one in critical condition, officials said.

Healey said the names of the two found on Friday, Sept. 6, are now being withheld pending notifications.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. 

The incident remains under investigation.
