bob fox tour

For almost 50 years BOB FOX has been regarded as one of “the iconic voices” of British folk song. Deeply influenced by the working class culture and industrial history of his native County Durham he has become a first rate exponent of storytelling through song.

A career that began during the vibrant “folk revival” of the 60s and 70s in England led  BOB into regular and extensive touring throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand, firstly with fellow North Easterner Stu Luckley in their groundbreaking acoustic duo and later alongside such musical heavyweights as Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson, Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention.

In 1978 the Bob Fox & Stu Luckley debut LP record - “Nowt So Good’ll Pass” achieved Melody Maker Folk Album of the Year and in 2000 BOB’s solo CD “Dreams Never Leave You” was voted The Daily Telegraph’s Album of the Year.

BOB’s masterful interpretation of traditional and contemporary song combined with an outstanding guitar technique has also earned him countless nominations in the  BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards over the years.

BOB has long been a favourite on the live circuit both as a solo artist and in his many  highly successful collaborations which include a duo with BILLY MITCHELL (Lindisfarne), THE PITMEN POETS (with Jez Lowe, Billy Mitchell and Benny Graham) and the BBC NEW RADIO BALLADS series. BOB was invited by John Tams to play the role of the folksinger/storyteller SONGMAN in The English National Theatre’s multi-award winning production of WARHORSE in London’s West End 2011-2013, and subsequently in the highly acclaimed and record breaking UK, Ireland and South Africa touring version 2013-2015 and the 10th Anniversary UK tour 2017-2019. In 2023 BOB teamed up with Jez Lowe and Julie Matthews to present a live concert of NEW RADIO BALLADS songs and stories and most recently has joined HOME SERVICE as lead singer.

Don’t miss a chance to experience his warm, rich voice, accompanied by a wonderful guitar style that can both drive or embellish his supreme singing. Expect to hear songs of love, joy, work and humour as he performs material from WarHorse, newly written songs from the New Radio Ballad series and old favourites from his many recordings.

“………..as soon as I heard him sing I realised that Bob Fox must have one of the best voices in England, he is an artist of great ability and integrity.” - RALPH McTELL

“It was a real joy to work with you at last after being a fan for many years. Your voice and playing are undiminished in quality and expertise.” - IAN ANDERSON (JETHRO TULL)

“Blessed with one of the best voices in British Folk Music today and coupled with astonishing  guitar technique, Bob Fox performs pure and unadulterated folk music at it’s finest.”  -          AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL

“Bob Fox has a gloriously rich singing voice, deep and resonant, honed by decades of               performance, he combines his agile voice with nimble guitar playing and applies his ample          talents to a repertoire of splendid material”  - SING OUT! THE FOLK MAGAZINE OF THE USA

“…possibly the most complete male artist in English folk” - THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

“one of the scenes superior singers his voice as confident and ebullient as ever!” - FOLK ROOTS

Two of the UK’s best known and loved singers – Billy Mitchell (Lindisfarne, Jack the Lad, Pitmen Poets) and Bob Fox (Warhorse Songman, Fox and Luckley, Pitmen Poets) are taking to the road together in 2024 to tour their show 5 Star B&B throughout the UK.

Their last major tour as a duo was back in 2010 where their sold out performances earned glowing reviews. Their individual busy schedules prevented them from reuniting… until 2020 when their UK tour was cut short by the Covid pandemic but now they’re back!

Two great voices, impeccable musicianship, a set full of memorable songs and infectious good humour, the mix of material is sparkling, full of punch and beautifully executed, the duo’s ability to connect with the audience is immediately evident as they lead you through some of their favourite songs including original Lindisfarne classics and trad folk arrangements: Sally Wheatley, Old Peculiar Feeling, Dance to your Daddy, Collier Laddie’s Wife, Big River, Galway Shawl and many more..

“ I’ve just witnessed my favourite gig of the year, and who would doubt me when I say that it was Billy Mitchell and Bob Fox ”

“ Billy and Bob’s vocal performances aren’t so much good as towering ”

About the  project

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF EWAN MACCOLL……and what hugely influential  footsteps they are!

In the 50s and 60s Ewan MacColl along with Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger created the groundbreaking Radio Ballads broadcasts for the BBC Home Service covering a variety of subjects and using an audio documentary format to highlight the experiences of real people weaving the voices of rarely-heard communities with songs written from and about their recorded interviews, the first time regional accents had been heard on BBC Radio!

There were eight original programmes and they were masterpieces of radio producing many songs that have since become folk classics.

More info here

Almost half a century later, in 2006, a new set of Radio Ballads were commissioned by BBC Radio 2 using the same format but this time involving a whole team of stellar musicians, singers and songwriters from the folk/acoustic/roots music scene under the guiding hands and watchful eyes of producer John Leonard and musical director John Tams.

Now three members of that team, Bob Fox, Jez Lowe and Julie Matthews, have put together a selection of songs from the 2006 new Radio Ballads for a concert performance IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF EWAN MacCOLL.

All three are consummate engaging performers of meaningful songs and stories and are multi-instrumentalists whose skills have been honed by decades of live touring throughout UK, Europe, Canada, U.S.A, Australia and New Zealand. They have all recorded extensively, worked in collaboration with many of the top folk roots artists and bands as well as having highly successful solo careers and are well loved and respected by audiences and colleagues alike.

Expect to be entertained and enlightened by songs of joy, love, hardship and humour.

Billy Mitchell and Bob Fox on tour

Billy Michell and Bob Fox

Unleashed and on the road again, two of the UK’s best known and loved singers – Billy Mitchell (Lindisfarne, Jack the Lad, Pitmen Poets) and Bob Fox (Warhorse Songman, Fox and Luckley, Pitmen Poets) are taking to the road together again throughout the UK.

And what a treat it is! The duo’s ability to connect with the audience is immediately evident as they lead you through some of their favourite songs including original Lindisfarne classics and trad folk arrangements: ‘Sally Wheatley’, ‘Meet Me On The Corner’, ‘Dance To Your Daddy’, ‘Collier Laddie’s Wife’, ‘Clear White Light’, ‘Big River’, ‘Galway Shawl’ and many more..

This is a rare opportunity to see Billy and Bob perform once again as a duo after several years of highly successful individual work. Both men are fine singers, masters of vocal harmony and musicians of stunning ability who can bring magic into any auditorium.

Billy has done it all as a performer and songwriter. He spent eight years as front man of the legendary Lindisfarne till their retirement in 2003. Billy’s influence on the latter-day line-up of the band helped them stay as respected and successful as they had been prior to his recruitment.

In the Seventies he founded the seminal Jack The Lad. He has acted and sung all around the world and in 2005 released his first solo album, The Devil’s Ground . In his enthusiastic review of the album, Pete Fyffe of Folking.com , described Billy as one of the finest singers on the planet“. Billy has most recently completed three sell out tours with The Lindisfarne Story and performs as one of The Pitmen Poets along with Bob Fox, Jez Lowe and Benny Graham presenting songs, stories and images of life in the Coal mining communities of Durham and Northumberland.

Bob has twice been nominated as Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. His masterful interpretation of traditional and contemporary songs is one of his greatest strengths and during his time performing with Stu Luckley, won the Melody Maker Folk Album of the Year Award in 1978 with their album Nowt So Good’ll Pass .

As soon as I heard Bob Fox sing I realised that he must have one of the best voices in England. I have always regarded him as an artiste of great integrity and ability’ ( Ralph McTell ). Bob was invited to join the National Theatre’s production of Warhorse in London’s West End in 2011 and subsequently the UK,Ireland and South Africa touring version in 2013 playing the role of Songman .

Billy and Bob first toured together in 2006 producing the highly acclaimed ‘live’ album Five-star B&B’ . More tours with Bob followed and a studio album Back on City Road . Their duo show features songs with a strong north-eastern flavour (including several Lindisfarne classics) celebrating the richness of life on both sides of the rivers Tyne, Wear and beyond. Billy and Bob’s close rapport, great songs and lashings of wit make this warmhearted show ideal for audiences of virtually any age or musical persuasion.

A masterclass in live entertainment.

In 1975, after spending 5 years as a floor singer around the many folk clubs in the North East of England as well as being a resident singer at the famous “Davylamp” Folk Club in Washington, BOB FOX met up with fellow North Easterner TOM McCONVILLE and his career as a professional folk singer/musician began.

In the duo with TOM he toured the vibrant folk club scene of mid 70’s Britain playing a mixture of Irish & Scottish dance music and singing mainly traditional songs primarily from their native North East, TOM on fiddle and BOB on guitar and piano.

BOB was vaunted as one of the best new singers on the scene and when the duo with TOM dissolved after 2 very successful years BOB formed a highly acclaimed partnership with ex-Hedgehog Pie man STU LUCKLEY.

BOB FOX & STU LUCKLEY amazed the folk clubs, festivals, reviewers and music press alike with their unique and innovative approach to arranging folk songs old and new, their first album

“NOWT SO GOOD’LL PASS” was voted FOLK ALBUM OF THE YEAR by Melody Maker on release in 1978 and remains a classic album.

BOB & STU were in great demand and played almost every folk club & festival in the UK and were support artists on major British tours for both RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON and RALPH McTELL. The duo also toured Germany, Holland, Australia and New Zealand and released a second album “WISH WE NEVER HAD PARTED” in 1982 before breaking up to pursue individual projects.

Since that time BOB has worked on developing his SOLO career and has also created a songs and slide show “HOW ARE YOU OFF FOR COALS” with BENNY GRAHAM depicting and celebrating the rich and varied culture of the coal mining communities of Durham & Northumberland.

In 1996 BOB & BENNY recorded the mining songs from the show and a few extras on a CD with Fellside Recordings of Cumbria “HOW ARE YOU OFF FOR COALS?” – FECD111 and the following year re-recorded a selection of 14 songs from his previous albums with STU on the CD

“BOX OF GOLD” – FECD 124. These two CDs come highly recommended by reviewers who once again place BOB at the top of the singer’s tree!

“FOX always was one of the scenes superior singers and his voice is as confident and

ebullient as it ever was!”          Colin Irwin -  FOLK ROOTS

In the year 2000 BOB celebrated 25 years of singing folk songs professionally and was invited to appear as “special guest” on the FAIRPORT CONVENTION  “Wood and the Wire” UK tour in February. His first ever solo CD  “DREAMS NEVER LEAVE YOU” - WRCD 035 was subsequently recorded at DAVE PEGG’S Woodworm Studio with various members of FAIRPORT playing on it.

The CD delighted both the folk press and BOB’s growing legion of fans, he also performed an impressive set at the CROPREDY FESTIVAL in August 2000.

In May/June 2001 BOB had a great reception on his first tour of US/Canada and in Sept/Oct Bob made the same impression on audiences in Australia and New Zealand.

Bob completed a Round the World tour in Sept/Oct/Nov 2002 and released a brand new CD “DARK TO THE SKY”  recorded in the North East with new band THE HUSH.

The album has received rave reviews with ”Here’s the tender coming” being nominated Best Traditional Track and Bob nominated Best Folk Singer in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2003.

Bob started 2003 with a busy schedule which included extensive tours in the UK, a third US tour, a return to Australia to perform at the National Festival in Canberra and Fairbridge Festival in W.A. and continued with appearances at some of the most prestigious Folk Festivals in England throughout the Spring/Summer. He also signed a 3 CD deal with TOPIC RECORDS, the first one entitled “BORROWED MOMENTS” released on 3rd Sept received  ecstatic reviews!

Bob was nominated Best Folk Singer once again in the 2004 Folk Awards and his version of the Chris Leslie song My Love is in America, recorded on Borrowed Moments, gained a nomination for Best Original Song.

Throughout 2005 Bob toured UK, USA, Australia and The Netherlands as well as appearing at many UK Folk Festivals in celebration of 30 years “on the road”.

Early in 2006 Bob was invited to join an elite group of folk singers, writers and musicians to record six new Radio Ballads commissioned by the BBC and produced and recorded by John Tams and John Leonard. Bob can be heard on all but the first of these and the series of six received great critical acclaim. His working relationship with John Tams was so successful that when Bob recorded his second Topic CD “THE BLAST” he asked John to produce it. Together they worked on the material and format of the album, mostly traditional songs with Bob’s superb voice accompanied only by his equally wonderful guitar playing.

"At last, the record we've been waiting for from Bob, it's the sound we hear in live performance, that astonishing guitar  technique coupled with one of England's finest voices."  -  Ralph McTell

Apart from the usual grueling round of solo touring Bob teamed up with old mate Billy Mitchell ex-Lindisfarne front man for a very special duo tour in the Autumn of 2006 which resulted in a great live CD being produced called

 “5 Star B & B.”

In 2007 Bob toured extensively in UK, was heavily involved in a “live” performance of the Radio Ballads at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival and finished the year with a second tour with Billy Mitchell.

For the first 3 months of 2008 Bob did his longest ever tour “down under” performing at festivals and concerts in Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand. On his return he embarked on an ambitious project with former duo partner Stu Luckley to re-record both of their original vinyl albums for a 2 CD set called “THIRTY YEARS ON” which they produced for their equally ambitious re-union tour that took place in the Autumn and taking in many of the places that they played in the 70s finishing at the highly prestigious Sage Concert Hall on the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead.

The performances they produced on the tour and the quality of the CD brought them a nomination in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009 as “Best Duo”.

There is another Bob Fox & Billy Mitchell tour in the Autumn of 2009 and Bob will tour solo for the rest of the year.

Bob Fox continues to be one of the most popular and best loved performers on the world folk stage and after more than three decades remains at the very top of his game.
