The spirit of Jacques Reynaud, the godfather of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is always present at the storied estate of Château Rayas. When this legendary founder died suddenly in 1997, his wife asked their nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud, to take the reins at both Château Rayas and Château de Fonsalette. Already making wines at his father's Château des Tours, Emmanuel agreed. Somewhat reclusive and to be found working his vineyards at most any time of day, every day, Emmanuel does not revel in the fame and notoriety that come with making such sought-after and acclaimed wines. Instead, he continues to quietly but successfully carry the mantle of his famous forebears, producing hauntingly aromatic wines at his three estates: Château Rayas, Château des Tours, and Château de Fonsalette. Located in Sarrians, just outside Vacqueyras, the Reynaud family purchased Château des Tours in 1935. The old house is flanked on both sides by tall towers (hence “des Tours”). This is Emmanuel's family estate, which he took over from his father, Bernard, in 1989. Emmanuel is at heart a farmer, and here he grows food for his family — olives, grains, and, importantly, grapes. Like all Reynaud vineyards, these are tended with the same organic methods, manually plowed, all hand-harvested much later than other producers, and centered around a reverence for old-vine Grenache. With 40 hectares of vineyards surrounding the house, Emmanuel produces Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône, and Vin De Pays, all from estate fruit. His wines are made with minimal to no sulfur during vinification. Whole cluster fermentation commences naturally without the inoculation of yeasts in underground concrete tanks and the wines are aged partly in oak casks. The parcels are vinified separately before assemblage takes place in enamel-lined tanks and bottled. The resulting wine is unfined and unfiltered. There is a a clear throughline in all the wines produced by Emmanuel — a unique weighty, aromatic, complex, and savory signature of all the wines that ranks them among the most well-regarded, sought-after bottles of the appellation. Côtes du Rhône - Château Des Tours Reserve Red 2017

Emmanuel Reynaud takes over the castles Stripes , of the Tours and of Fonsalette following the death of his uncle in 1997.

Prior to his succession, Emmanuel was already operating the Domain of Tours where he created the winery and developed marketing in 1989. 

At the heart of the southern wine appellations of the Rhone Valley , Emmanuel Reynaud offers its wines under the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. 

The Tours Castle located at the bottom of the appellation Vacqueyras in the Sarrians sector is a large property with ten hectares of vines, woods, an area of ​​agricultural land and olive trees. 

The cultivated varieties are Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah for red and Grenache blanc, Clairette and Marsann e for white. 

Its wines with the singular expression of Grenache, balanced and complex with incredible fruits are sold at Château Rayas.

I had the 2012 Domaine des Tours VDP Vaucluse last week and it was similar, but not as weighty. Complex nose, yes. Elegance, finesse, delicious…check. But where you found the CdR dark and powerful, the VDP is an almost translucent ruby color and light and lively to drink. It is a lovely wine in the house style.

I have now had this rose twice, although i enjoyed it, others described it best as idiosyncratic:

NV Domaine des Tours Parisy

Tuesday, March 28, 2017 - From memory. Medium pale strawberry. Fresh nose of underripe red berries, wet mint leaves, spice. The palate is riper and more savory, with some funk and a slight bitter edge, The finish is medium long for a rose. Overall leans strongly red in flavor, full-bodied white in texture.

I’ve bought and gone through a good bit of this one of the 2011 and 2012 versions. For me the 11 was lighter and livelier. The 12 has seemed a bit heavy. However I feel a few years on the 12 would do it some good. Very good wine nonetheless.

This is one of my absolute top QPR candidates. After tasting, i immediately purchased a case and paid the $70 shipping from New York. Very much rayas style with olive, pepper, herbal spiced strawberry compote, and a little cloudy. Fonsalette is becoming my favorite in their stable, but this is hard to beat for the price.

While these wines can be enjoyed in their youth they age admirably well, even the Vin des Pays … I had a 2004 recently that was very fine, and also a Cotes-du-Rhone 2001 … (the 2008s are for current drinking).

It´s with good reason that Emmanuel releases his wines very late, the 2013 VdP and CdRh are the last releases, while with the Vacqueyras (and Rayas/Pignan/Fonsalette) it´s only 2010 …

I generally love the Vacqueyras and just saw it for $60 which I feel is a bit high.

Just received a 6 pack of the NV Parisy today, eager to set a bottle aside and taste in the next few weeks. Want to do a tasting with SQN, Andremily, and Lopez Rosado (realizing they are all different styles and production processes). Will report back.

Parisy is the “easiest” wine in the stable … not sure about competing with SQN …

Current vintage (2013) costs 48.90 Eur

I know, but not in the “market” …

My guess is that Pat intends to taste it next to SQN rosé. I never had that, can’t comment on quality…

I had the 2010 SQN rosé with a 2018 L’Anglore Tavel a few weeks ago and they couldn’t have been more different but I greatly enjoyed them both. The SQN was over the top, super rich, 15.4% alcohol, and I really wanted to hate it but it was strangely compelling.

This is correct, I’m a fan of all Rosè but especially like the ‘bigger’ ones. Just wanted to check out the different styles side by side to see what I enjoyed
