My wife and I took the "Cape Cod Getaway" tour and it was incredible. The driver, Lou and escort, Linda were informative, knowledgeable and lots of fun. The bus was new and very comfortable. The tour itself was packed with lots to see and do including whale watching, tours of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard and a visit to Provincetown. The hotel was on a private beach and it was very clean and comfortable. The meals were amazing. Delicious and lots of great local seafood. Conestoga Tours planned a wonderful experience for us and we'll be booking more tours with them !!!

Did NYC Gourmet food tour on 9/2/18. Driver Don was very friendly, very informative. He was always smiling. Driver was on-time at each stop. Smooth trip. We had a great time exploring the big Apple and enjoying delicious treats.

One of the oldest Motor Coach & Tour company in Lancaster, Pa. The drivers are safe, reliable and very knowledgable!

Took a trip to NYC on a Conestoga bus. Overall very pleased: 1. Very clean floor, seats, bathroom. 2. Driver was knowledgable and communicated clearly with us about the where and when of pickup. He even had a specific memory trick to help everyone remember where to meet. 3. We got there and home in one piece. The only criticism I have is that the window of time at the rest stops is very short for as busy as that particular rest stop happens to be.

Won't ever book a tour with these guys again. Wife had an emergency and ended up in the hospital. They charged us 70 bucks and wouldn't let us apply it to another trip. Expensive lesson from a heartless company.

conestoga one day tours

A Conestoga Tours bus in front of the Jekyll Island Club in Georgia. (Conestoga Tours)

For decades, Conestoga Tours has brought the excitement of travel and exploration to its far-reaching community, but at the end of 2022 this long-lasting business will close its final chapter. Since the 1980s, the company has given folks the chance to explore sights all over the United States and in Canada through one-day and overnight trips that include the best in accommodations, attractions, restaurants and transportation. The company has been a community fixture since well before it launched its national tours, with a history tracing all the way back to 1899 — and now, as Conestoga Tours wraps up the last year of its existence, customers can say goodbye with one last day trip to New York City on December 28.

The company has seen much success over the years. It originally started as simply public transportation for the local area, operating trolleys and then local buses in the first half of the 20th century. In 1946, Thomas Meredith Sr. joined the company after returning home from World War II, and he quickly rose through the ranks to become head of the company. During the 1950s, the company began a charter bus service and a local tour service, and Conestoga Transportation Company became one of the most recognizable transportation companies locally. Over time, Meredith and his family purchased enough shares to take the company private and dedicated their careers to maintaining the excellent reputation it had achieved.

Despite the brand recognition and the customer trust that was earned, the company still had to weather many storms. The first tours the company conducted were four-hour excursions into Amish country, every year taking over 100,000 tourists who were staying at big, nearby hotels — but after the accident at the nuclear power plant on Three Mile Island in 1979, when there was a partial meltdown of one reactor, people feared that radiation would be present in the area and they avoided taking unnecessary trips to Lancaster.

Problems like that demanded new business ventures in order to adapt to the changing market, and Tom Meredith Jr. was given the task of finding new sources of income for the bus company after the 50% decline in passengers that the Three Mile Island issue had created. He tried a novel idea he had picked up at a convention: expanding the tours they sold to include day trips and much longer trips, like to the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. Taking 20-some busloads of passengers to the fair put Conestoga Tours on the map for cross-country tours, which helped keep the business going for the next 40 years. The company’s motorcoaches were much more luxurious than what most people envision when they hear the word “bus,” too: in addition to having comfortable seats for long rides, they were equipped with restrooms, DVD players and WiFi.

However, like many other transportation-based companies, Conestoga Tours was not prepared for COVID-19. The hospitality industry shut down almost overnight, and even if people were willing to travel soon after, too many restaurants, accommodations and venues were closed to make it worth going to most places. Even after the lockdowns were lifted, long-lasting effects on the industry have remained: labor shortages, supply chain issues, economic troubles and the shuttering of businesses that had once helped the industry thrive means that tours are more difficult to carry out than ever.

conestoga one day tours

Tom Meredith Jr., now the president and owner of Conestoga Tours, explained in an interview with The Lancaster Patriot that the rates of many motels and hotels have skyrocketed and these places are so short-staffed that it takes multiple phone calls and emails to even get in touch with customer service, when in prior years it took almost no effort to confirm that rooms were available for trips. Even once rooms are reserved, a lack of cleaners on hotel staff means that he hears complaints of dirty rooms. There are also fewer restaurants open, and reduced staff in the restaurants that remain means that many can no longer accept busloads of people all at once. Many attractions also have reduced their hours or are closing their doors on different days of the week. “The planning of these tours, which used to be something I really enjoyed, has become a nightmare,” Meredith said.

Meredith grew up in the bus industry — he has memories of sitting in the driver’s seat of a bus and trying to turn the huge steering wheel when he was only 5 years old — but now that he is nearly 70 and has stepped back from running a charter bus company to solely run the tour company, he sees the current state of the hospitality and bus industries as a final push for him to retire.

His main regret in closing the company’s doors is for the people who still want the chance to travel in such a communal way. “Most of the people who go on the trips are older, the older generation,” he explained, “and a lot of them, their kids have moved out of the area and life is a little bit lonelier than it had been when they had their families with them. One of the benefits of this type of travel is the people you meet on the tours. So I’ve found that a lot of our customers have developed pretty long-term friendships with people they met on these tours, and a lot of them now even travel together.”

Fortunately, the service that Conestoga Tours has provided will not entirely disappear just yet: Meredith’s former head driver, Lou DiPerna, and his wife, Linda, one of the tour directors, have decided to offer tours next year under the name Lou and Linda’s Adventures. The DiPernas will take travelers to favorite destinations that Conestoga Tours offered over the years.

For his part, Meredith said that it has been an honor to transport the many customers his family’s company has served through the years. “We enjoyed having them on all our tours and taking them to destinations all across the country,” he added.

“Since 1980, my company has worked to give them the very best travel experiences they could have at a very reasonable rate,” he said. Although organizing trips can be hard sometimes, it is worth it in the end. “The satisfaction I got is the realization that a lot of these people would never have been to these destinations and seen the sights that we took them to if we hadn’t offered this type of service. They had no intention of ever driving their cars to California or to Arizona or to Yellowstone Park or the Black Hills. They never would have seen these sights without Conestoga Tours providing this service. So it gives me a lot of satisfaction to think I helped enhance their lives a little bit.”

He also thanked the employees who helped make it possible to offer such services to the public. The drivers, mechanics and other staff worked long and hard to make sure every trip was a success. “I owe 47 years of gratitude to so many people,” he said. “It’s hard to let that go.”

On Wednesday, December 28, Conestoga Tours will take three buses on a tour of New York City for one final hurrah. There is still time to purchase tickets to join in on the fun. For reservation information, you can call 717-569-1111 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

One Day in Moscow Itinerary – What to do in Moscow, Russia

Moscow is an amazing city full of history. Located in western Russia, on the Moskva River, it has been the capital of the country since the 14th century, with a break of 200 years when the capital of Russia was moved to Sankt Petersburg. This impressive place provides its visitors with a glimpse of Russian traditions and ways of living but also boasts many incredible sights. One day in Moscow will therefore be an amazing experience full of things to do an places to see. This is Russian culture and history at its finest!

One day in Moscow Itinerary

Moscow is also one of the most populated cities in the world and the most populated and fastest-growing city in Europe. Visiting it in one day is a challenge , but not impossible. Discover its amazing architecture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and incredible parks because this is one of the greenest cities in Europe, too.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Moscow?

Moscow is a cold city, and if you want to enjoy it fully while it is sunny, the best time to visit it is during summer. However, summer is the most touristy season , and the prices are very high, but the weather is very nice (from June to August the temperature is about 22° – 24°C).

In Moscow, there is more winter than any other season, so autumn turns cold really fast and the spring comes late. If you want to avoid the crowded season, you can visit the city from April to May and during the fall month of September, when the temperatures are more bearable. Winter in Moscow is snowy and incredibly cold, with temperatures of -10°C in December and January. But this is also a part of its charm.

Moscow in winter

A Few Facts About Moscow

Moscow really is an incredible city, and it has a high number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that mustn’t be missed when you visit it. Its historic buildings describe perfectly the colorful and nice Russian architecture, transporting you back in time. Moscow is also a key element of the political, cultural, scientific, and economic development of Eastern Europe, with some iconic buildings to prove this. These include the Red Square, the Kremlin, and even the largest bell in the world which can be visited anytime.

Saint Basil, Moscow

One Day in Moscow

Spending just one day in Moscow is not enough to discover all of its hidden gems, culture, and history, but it is still a great opportunity to meet this fascinating city. Visit and discover the most iconic places in Moscow and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.

Start with a Breakfast at Coffeemania (Kofemaniya Moss)

You have a great day ahead of you, so it is better to start it off with a good breakfast. Coffeemania is one of the most appreciated bars by tourists, especially because it is close to the city center. You can choose from a lot of breakfast options, including vegetarian or vegan meals. It is an excellent cafe with characteristic Russian design that makes the morning experience more enjoyable. There are two Coffeemanias in Moscow, one that is in a mall, and this one which is at 1.8 km from the Red Square, just 20 minutes away.

Admire the Red Square

The Red Square has been an important and iconic place for Moscow since 1400. It became popular and famous after all the military parades, demonstrations, and events that took place here. It is definitely one of the places you should not miss when in Moscow, even if you have just one day here. The Red Square is also incredibly beautiful, as evidenced by its Russian name – the Red Square translates to Krasnaya Ploshchad in Russian, Krasnaya meaning beautiful in old Russian.

Red square, Moscow

Soak in the Beauty of Saint Basil’s Cathedral (Khram Vasiliya Blazhennogo)

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic places in Moscow. Depending on the season, during the day it is very crowded because it is one of the most important tourist attractions. But if you want to visit it during the night, you won’t believe the combination of lights and colors you can see here. Saint Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its bright and colorful cherry onion domes, one of the most important cultural symbols of the country. It was built in 1552 and the legend says that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects. Why? So that they will not build another structure or replicate the existing one.

Saint Basil, Moscow

Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum is located in the Red Square and it is also known as Lenin’s Tomb. It became one of the major attractions in Moscow, especially because the preserved mummy of Vladimir Lenin is on public display. You do not have to pay for a ticket because the entrance is free. But during tourist season, you might have to wait in line at a queue.

Lenin's mausoleum, Moscow

Discover the Kremlin

The Red Square is a tourist attraction, not only because of its historical and cultural value but also because it is the place where the Kremlin is located. The Kremlin can be seen from the Red Square; however, it takes you 12 minutes to reach it on foot. This magnificent building was built between the 14th and 17th centuries and is one of the most important ones in the country.

Kremlin means fortress inside a city, which pretty much describes it perfectly. Inside the Kremlin are five palaces, four cathedrals, 20 towers, and an enclosing wall. The Kremlin Palace , which is located inside the Kremlin is the official residence of the President of Russia. You can visit the Kremlin, and the ticket is around 700 rubles.

Relax in the Alexander Garden (Alexandrovsky Sad)

The Alexander Garden is one of the first public parks built in Moscow, right near the Kremlin, only 6 minutes away. It runs along the length of the western Kremlin wall and it has three separate gardens.

Alexander Gardens, Moscow

The Upper Garden is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , where people pay tribute to the war veterans. Here you will also find some remains of the buildings that celebrated the victory of Russia over Napoleon (which were later destroyed when France occupied Moscow) and an obelisk from Finland that was re-carved when Lenin ruled the country.

Alexander Gardens, Moscow

Have Lunch at Beluga

Beluga is close to Alexander Garden and is rated as one of the best restaurants in Moscow. Here you will have the opportunity to taste the Russian cuisine and discover its gastronomy. It is located in a modern hotel that also offers a rooftop view of the most iconic places, such as the Kremlin.

Visit the Theater Square and the Bolshoi Theatre

The Theater Square of Moscow is another square that is iconic for the capital of Russia. Here you can see the Bolshoi Theatre , where you can also go to see an opera and theater performances. It is an iconic place where Russia developed its artistic side, so it is very much worth visiting. It was built between 1821 and 1825 and it takes you just five minutes to reach it on foot from Beluga.

End the Day with a Night Visit to Artbat

Artbat is not so close to the city center, but the visit during the evening or the night is a great idea. From the Theater Square, you can take the M2 tram and reach it in about 20 minutes, or you can walk and reach it in 40 minutes (it’s only 3km away).

Arbat Street, Moscow

Artbat is a street filled with kiosks with a lot of souvenirs, bars, cafes, and restaurants, so you can have dinner here, too. It is a major tourist attraction, but the locals love it too because here are the Pushkin House (a museum) and the Vakhtangov Theater where you can see artistic performances.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Europe, so it has a lot of accommodation options. But taking into consideration that you only get to spend one day there, you may want to choose a location close to the city center. However, public transportation is organized and accessible, so it will be easy to move between locations.

Ulitsa Novy Arbat, 21 bld. 2, Arbat, 119019 Moscow

As you end the day at Arbat Street, you could book your accommodation at the 4-star Brosko Hotel. It offers high-quality services and impressive rooms. You can also eat at their restaurant, which has options both for meat-eaters and vegetarians, plus they also have airport shuttles.

Day Trips from Moscow

There is a lot of nice attractions and places to explore and visit near Moscow. Some of the best day trips include:

Korolev – located just one hour away from Moscow, it is considered a suburb of the capital. However, it has its own identity, which was shaped during World War II. Here was the industrial area of Russia back at the time and also the base for Soviet Space Exploration .

Borodino – if you want to visit the place where Napoleon was defeated by the Russian army , then a two-hour day trip from Moscow to Borodino is what you are looking for. It is not that popular among tourists, so you can enjoy it calmly.

Zvenigorod – if you want to discover the Russian cuisine, then you should head straight to Zvenigorod. Besides the beautiful and impressive monasteries, here you can visit the Museum of Russian Desserts . And the best thing about it is that you can taste them, so it will be a nice gastronomical experience.

Extra Tips for Visiting Moscow

Here are some extra trips you should consider before visiting Moscow .

You need a visa (that you need to pay for) to visit Russia or an invitation from an approved organization.

Always have cash with you because not all shops in Moscow accept credit card payments.

You can use the Metro for transportation, as it is one of the most used, fastest, and cheapest means of transportation in crowded Moscow.

Francis will be only the second pope to visit Singapore, one of the wealthiest nations

Singapore pope explainer.

SINGAPORE (AP) — When Pope Francis arrives Wednesday in Asia’s financial powerhouse Singapore for the last leg of a four-nation tour , he is expected to bring his message of unity and hope to one of the world’s richest nations.

The 11-day trip, which earlier took him to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor, is the longest for the 87-year-old pontiff since becoming head of the Catholic Church in 2013. Francis will be the second pope to visit Singapore, after a five-hour stopover by the late John Paul II in 1986.

Here’s what to know about Pope Francis' three-day stay in Singapore:

Why is Francis visiting Singapore?

Singapore was originally part of Francis’ travel plans to the region in 2020 but it was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The island city-state at the tip of the Malay peninsula has a small population of just under 6 million people and lacks natural resources, but it is a heavyweight in regional and international affairs. Astute leadership, its strategic location and reputation as one of the most open and least corrupt economies had transformed Singapore into a bustling financial giant and maritime and aviation hubs in just 59 years after independence.

Singapore is a strategic U.S. partner but also maintains close ties with China. Ethnic Chinese account for about three-quarters of its residents followed by minority Muslims and Indians.

According to a 2020 Singapore population census, Buddhists make up about 31%. About a fifth of the population claimed no religious belief, while Christians account for almost 19% and Muslims about 15%.

Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, reflecting its multicultural identity and heritage.

“Singapore and the Holy See share a common interest in promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. Pope Francis’ state visit is also the first papal visit to Singapore in almost 40 years,” Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said.

In a city ranked as one of the most expensive to live in, Singapore’s Cardinal WIlliam Goh said that key themes frequently emphasised by Francis such as human dignity, inclusiveness, interreligious dialogue, family values, the need to manage artificial intelligence responsibly and care for the environment were of particular relevance.

“As such, Pope Francis’ visit is highly anticipated and warmly welcomed not only by the Catholic faithful, but also by the wider society.” Goh said in a written response to The Associated Press. “After the apostolic visit is done, I pray that Singapore will be filled with hope — a profound, divine hope.”

What's on the pope's itinerary?

After flying in from Dili, East Timor, on Wednesday, Pope Francis will hold a private meeting with members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

On Thursday, he will receive an official welcome at Parliament House and meet Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. He will also meet government officials, civil society and the diplomatic corps at the National University of Singapore.

The highlight will be a public Mass at the 55,000-seat National Stadium in the evening. Those attending include Catholics from neighboring Malaysia and Brunei. Francis will make a tour around the stadium pitch to greet the faithful in his Popemobile before delivering his homily.

On the last day, Francis will visit elderly residents at the St Theresa’s Home. He will also hold an interreligious meeting with youths at the Catholic Junior College.

How influential is the church in Singapore?

The church marked 200 years in Singapore in 2021. The Archdiocese of Singapore was formed in 1972, seven years after Singapore's independence. Diplomatic relations with the Holy See were established in 1981.

In Singapore’s early years, Cardinal Goh said the church’s work in education and health care were important contributors to national development.

“Many of the country’s top leaders in both the public and private spheres were formed in Catholic schools; and many basic health care needs were provided by Church-run health care institutions,” he wrote on the Vatican News website.

The church supports 395,000 Catholics in Singapore with its 29 parish churches, three devotional churches, 53 schools, 47 humanitarian organizations and two health care institutions. Goh said the church holds frequent dialogue with the government, which views it as an important contributor and shaper of Singapore's social fabric.

Goh, Singapore's first cardinal installed by Francis in 2022, is a member of two Presidential Councils that advise the government on matters relating to racial and religious harmony and minority rights.

“As the final stop on this apostolic journey, Singapore stands as a testament to peaceful coexistence in a modern, multicultural, and multi-religious society," Goh wrote in his reply to the AP. "This reflects the spirit of unity and diversity that Pope Francis has emphasized throughout his pontification.”

Exploring Moscow in One Day [Top Attractions, Hotels and Tours]

Moscow, the cosmopolitan capital of Russia, oozes of luxury and historic charm.  If you plan on exploring Moscow in one day, you will be surprised to hear that it is very much possible.

I dont say this for most cities, but since almost all architectural wonders are nestled together in the Red Square, its easy to walk around and cover the top attractions of Moscow. At least!

Must Visit Inclusions to Your Moscow One Day Itinerary

st basils cathedral moscow

Exploring Moscow in one day can be easy and fun. Especially if you just want to cover the basics but since I don’t like to rush through destinations, I gave it three days.

If you just have 24 hours, I would suggest covering these just these spots or taking one of the many short guided tours in Moscow.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

St Basil's Cathedral

The onion shaped domes of this church had been on my bucket list since I first saw a picture online. The architecture and the color pops were simply incredible. It looks like an image right out of Aladdin. In reality – it looks just as I imagined it to be.

St Basil’s Catherdral was simply a sight to behold!

I felt like a little kid walking on the pages of a pop up story book as I looked at the funky colors and shape of Saint Basil. Was this place for real, I asked myself!

moscow in one day

If you had time to see one attraction in Moscow, I would say – THIS should be it!

Beware of the crowds though as its quite busy, as is the entire Red Square.

The tourist mecca of Moscow- Red Square , is flocked by hoards of travelers each day. I never anticipated it to be so crowded. At few spots, there were huge queues and barely any space to walk. So when I say its busy, its NOT an understatement.

Walking around red square

However, if you want to see any of the top attractions like the Kremlin, St Basil’s Cathedral, State historical museum or Lenin’s Mausoleum, then this is the place to be.

Iconic buildings of Moscow

While you are here, check out Alexandrovsky Sad (aka Alexander Garden) with the pretty horse fountain.

Spectacular horse fountain at Alexander Garden

If you aren’t too keen on exploring on your own and want some interesting tid-bits of Moscow’s history, then take this two hour guided tour of Red Square .

Wait! Why is a mall on my must visit list? Well, its like no mall I have ever seen. Quite frankly, to me, it looked like a huge Disneyland.

GUM moscow

It is filled with cute ice cream shops, fountains, cartoon characters walking around, peppy music and families with kids running around – Sounds like Disney?

GUM mall moscow

Plus, when you walk around Red Square this is the perfect place to beat the heat (Yes, Moscow can get terribly hot in summers).

Arbat Street

After walking around the red square, you can take the underground to Arbat. Its a popular artsy street full of cafes, shops, eateries, bars, souvenir stands, caricaturists and more.

Caricaturists at Arbat street

As other parts of town, Arbat street is also extremely busy.

Walking around Arbat

Another fun attraction to be covered in Moscow if you just have a day to spare would be the pretty Gorky park of Culture and Leisure .

Its a pure delight for both children and adults. With a lovely lake to relax around, small amusement park for rides, lots of fast food joints, huge ass fountain in the middle, constant events and games for everyone, paths for cycling and skate scooters (plus you can get them on rent here), lounge chairs and huge gardens to lay around in and more! Phew!

gorky park

Gorky is for everyone but beware this is also extremely busy during a hot summer day in Moscow – pretty much all families flock to the park.

gorky park fountain

If there is one thing I learnt from exploring Moscow in 24 hours, was that if you have young kids – you will absolutely love it. There is tons to do in Moscow for families with young ones, that’s for sure. Extremely kid-friendly and fun city.

While you are at Gorky, you can even check out this private boat tour which shows all iconic attractions from a different perspective.

Moscow Underground Stations

Just like the stunning St Petersburg’s metro stations , Moscow has its own underground architectural delights. From the deepest metro station to the most stunning ones, Moscow’s stations are indeed sights to behold.

I would highly recommend taking a tour of the Moscow underground .

Moscow at night

Moscow is simply one of the most stunning cities at night, I have ever seen. No doubt about it.

I got to Moscow from St Petersburg around 2230 hrs and as soon as I stepped out of the station, I was simply looking all around in complete awe.

Moscow is not just a rich metropolis – it LOOKS like one!

Moscow at night is quite a sight

Plus if you have time, I would recommend checking the bridge’s open across the Neva river at night. This starts at 0125 hrs and lasts till wee hours of dawn. Be aware that the roads to the city are shut temporarily but there are alternative routes or you can wait it out.

Need help? Just book a guided Moscow walking tour at night , for €15 to give you a good insight into this sparkling city.

Where to Stay in Moscow?

Moscow has many budget and mid-range options to stay. However, the only way to do a rich metropolitan city, the right way, is to live it up in style. However, before you set off booking your hotel stay, ensure you get the Russian visa beforehand.

For my stay, I chose the swanky Swissotel Krasnye Holmy Moscow in Moscow, and I couldn’t have been happier. My room on the 25th floor gave me awesome views of the city below.

Admiring the epic city views at Swissotel

Watching the spectacular city lights at night with a bottle of wine and waking up to incredible sun rises and a cup of coffee was the norm for my three days at Swissotel.

room at swissotel

My evenings, after exploring the city, were spent working from the plush executive lounge of Swissotel. With unlimited snacks and alcohol every evening, I noticed it was quite popular among fellow entrepreneurs.

executive lounge in Swissotel

The in-house gym, sauna and indoor pool was also impeccable. Though I didn’t get a chance to enjoy these services for guests, personally.

The lovely indoor pool at Swissotel

Honestly, I couldn’t have done Moscow any other way – Swissotel was the perfect choice.

I know so little about Moscow, so it was really nice to come across your article. I was surprised to learn that Moscow gets really hot in summer. Arbat street looks like my kind of place, and I definitely would like to check out the underground to see what the fuss is about… Looks like you had a beautiful stay at the Swissotel too. Nice post.
