Where do I even start? Every song on this record creates such a terrifying, yet beautiful atmosphere that no other artist could ever come close to replicating: The claustrophobic feel of 'I Want You to Suffer' creates a heavy blanket of noise that just crushes you with anxiety. The steady creeping nature of 'Lucifer Stand' (and its surreal ending sample.) The somber sound and lyrics of 'Just for Loving You...' It's all perfect. Well done. Well done. ratboy

Record-Breaking Heat Wave Bakes Midwest and Northeast
Extreme heat alerts persist for millions in the u.s. as cities like chicago break temperature records. the national weather service warns of a dangerous heat wave affecting the midwest and northeast. officials recommend safety measures and establish cooling centers to help vulnerable populations..
- United States
Extreme heat alerts remained in place for tens of millions across the United States on Tuesday as record-breaking temperatures scorched cities like Chicago at the start of a sweltering week.
The National Weather Service described the prolonged heat wave as dangerous, affecting states from Iowa to Maine until at least Friday.
On Monday, Chicago shattered a 1957 temperature record, reaching a high of 97°F (36.1°C). This week's hot and muggy conditions are expected to persist, with peak heat indexes hitting near 100°F (37.7°C), according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.
Despite the severe heat, Chicago's Grant Park patrons continued to order the hottest menu items from food trucks. Emmanuel Ramos, a cook, told WBBM-TV, "They be ordering the hottest stuff on the hottest day."
Last year, the U.S. experienced the most significant heat waves since 1936. Officials now urge residents to take precautions, open cooling centers, and reduce outdoor activities to mitigate heat-related risks.
In Phoenix, a record 645 heat-related deaths were recorded in 2023. The city saw temperatures reach 112°F (44.4°C) on Saturday. Forecasters there advise minimizing outdoor exposure and staying hydrated during the peak heat hours.
Amid rising temperatures, Southern California firefighters made progress in containing a large wildfire near Los Angeles. Growing concerns about extreme heat and wildfire smoke have led the Center for Biological Diversity to petition FEMA to classify them as major disasters.
While the U.S. continues to swelter, the northern Rockies brace for late-season snow, with up to 20 inches (51 cm) expected. Tropical moisture brings added flash flood risks to the central Gulf Coast, as a notably active hurricane season looms.

Community cooling centers open in Columbus as extreme heat wave hits
Columbus recorded a high temperature of 95 degrees Monday at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the highest temperature in 2024 — so far.
It's going to be hot this week. Very hot. A dangerous, "feels like" and darn close to actual 100-degree sort of hot.
As such, the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) and the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department are opening up their locations to serve as community cooling centers for anyone who needs refuge from the sweltering sun.
More: Heat advisory issued for most of Ohio through Friday; thunderstorms forecast Monday
All 23 of Columbus Metropolitan Library's locations are open to the public for cooling during their normal hours this week, and the Main, Barnett, Hilltop and Northern Lights branches have extended hours for cooling, according to a CML press release.
These four branches will stay open until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday instead of their normal 6 p.m. close, and they'll be open on Wednesday during the Juneteenth holiday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. while the other library locations are closed for the holiday.
City Council and Gateway Film Center offering free movie tickets during heat wave
Columbus City Council and the Gateway Film Center are teaming up to offer two days of free movies for families looking to escape the heat. The movie tickets will include popcorn and soda, according to a news release from City Council.
The free movies will be shown on Wednesday, June 19 and Thursday, June 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Gateway Film Center located at 1550 North High St. Attendees will be able to choose from the following films:
- Tuesday (2024)
- The Bad Guys (2022)
- Jurassic Park (1993) 4K Restoration
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
- Matilda (1996)
- The Fall Guy (2024)
- Shrek (2001)
- The Grab (2024) - Wednesday Only
- Resistance: They Fought Back (2024) - Wednesday Only
"Extreme weather events are becoming more common; from this week's potentially record breaking heat to the tornadoes and severe storms we've been experiencing," said Councilmember Christopher Wyche. "That's why Council is working with city departments and community partners to support our residents through multiple channels during this heat wave."
Starting on June 19, five of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department's community centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until the heat wave subsides, according to a news release. These five locations are:
- Dodge Community Center
- Driving Park Community Center
- Glenwood Community Center
- Linden Community Center
- Marion Franklin Community Center
Additionally, the city's public pools and "spraygrounds" will have extended hours during the heat dome. Starting June 19, all of the city's pools will be open 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the $1 admission fee will be waived until the heat goes away. The city's "spraygrounds" will be open 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the same period.
Juneteenth cooling centers
Trinity Episcopal Church at 125 E. Broad St. will open as a cooling center on Wednesday, Juneteenth, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a press release.
Four of CML's library locations and five Columbus parks and recreation centers will also be open on Juneteenth for cooling.
If you're a visual learner, here's a map of the cooling centers around Columbus.
How to avoid overheating, heat stroke during heat wave
Columbus Public Health offers some tips to beat the heat and care for yourself during the heat wave. They are:
- Drink plenty of water. Do not wait until you are thirsty.
- Stay in air conditioning whenever possible. If you do not have an air conditioner, use movie theatres, malls, libraries and other public places that are cool.
- Avoid beverages with alcohol, caffeine and sugar because they will dehydrate you.
- Eat light meals.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Avoid strenuous activities, and limit them to morning and evening hours.
- Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.
- Check on family members, friends and neighbors.
- Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
After publication, CML announced their Driving Park location would not have extended hours or be open on Juneteenth. Instead, their Barnett location will be open during that time. The story and the map have been updated to reflect that change .

New York News | NYC to see dangerous heat wave this week: How hot will it get? How long will it last?
The National Weather Service is expected to issue a heat advisory for the five boroughs in effect from Thursday to Friday, with the city activating its heat emergency plan Monday morning. Cooling centers aross the city will open Tuesday.
T he hottest temperatures will hover around the high 80s to around 90 Tuesday, with the heat index, or “feels like” temperatures, in the lower 90s, according to David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service . Wednesday will be slightly warmer, with highs from 89 to 92 degrees and a heat index in the lower 90s.
The city will really heat up on Thursday when temperatures are expected to reach up to 94 degrees and the heat index reaching 100.
Friday will see highs in the upper 90s and a heat index of around 100 degrees. There’s a chance Friday could bring record-breaking heat — if temperatures soar past the 1988 record of 97 degrees .
Temperatures will begin to tick downward on Saturday, which is expected to see heat in the lower 90s and by Sunday, the heat is expected to break a bit, with the air temperature back in the 80s.
The heat wave, the season’s first, comes earlier in the year than usual — with peak summer heat usually coming in late July or August.
“We are about a month early,” Stark said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to see another one, but it is sort of prepping us for what what potentially could come.”
Mayor Adams, accompanied by extreme weather czar Camille Joseph Varlack and other officials, urged city dwellers to check in on neighbors and told seniors and those with young children and pets to take extra precautions, stay in air conditioning and limit exposure to the hot sun.
Adams also cautioned that air quality could take a dive this week, in addition to the heat.
“This is extremely hot for June, and New Yorkers should not underestimate the heat ,” Mayor Adams warned in a press conference on the heat on Monday. “With climate change leading to more frequent and intense heat, summers are different than before, so we should expect and be prepared for the hot weather that is coming.”
Calling heat “ the most dangerous weather phenomenon we have in New York City,” Commissioner NYC Emergency Management Zach Iscol said that more than 350 New Yorkers a year on average die because of heat.
It will be hot throughout each day of the heat wave, with peak intensity forecasted to happen between noon and 8 p.m. each day — and temps won’t fall much at night, dipping to the 70s, Iscol said.
The city has expanded a network of cooling sites with air conditioning across the city and distributed “outdoor cool kits” to be handed out to outdoor workers, Adams said.
Beaches are open for the season, but public pools are not yet .
New Yorkers should limit their electricity consumption — avoiding running a load of laundry or blasting the air conditioning at max cool all day — in order to curb the risk of blackouts, officials advised.

Mother accused of leaving 4-year-old girl in hot car while she shopped
MESA, Ariz. (KPHO/ Gray News ) — A woman is facing a felony charge after police in Arizona said she left a 4-year-old girl in a hot car while she was in a store during extreme heat on Saturday.
Court documents said two people saw the girl locked inside the car alone with the windows rolled up and the engine off at around 7:45 p.m. at the shopping center located near Stapley Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa.
The two called police for help.
When officers arrived, the mother, identified as Nicole Dawn Yazzie, came out of a store, unlocked the car and opened the right rear passenger door, according to court records.
An officer saw the girl inside sweating profusely, and she was removed from the car.
Court documents said the young victim was disoriented, pale and appeared to have urinated on herself. She was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and long cotton pants, the officer described.
It was 110 degrees outside, and police calculated it was 129 degrees inside the car, court paperwork said.
The child was given water and medical attention on the scene. She was then placed into an air-conditioned police car.
Documents state that Yazzie intentionally placed the girl in the car because she didn’t want to go into the store. She also allegedly admitted to not turning the car on because “she didn’t want her daughter to drive away,” police said.
Yazzie said she knew it was wrong to leave her daughter in the car, according to court documents.
Yazzie was booked on one count of child abuse. Her bond was set at $15,000.

Scotus preserves abortion pill access.
The Supreme Court unanimously preserved access to mifepristone, one of two drugs used in the majority of medication abortions. It was the court’s first abortion decision since overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.
The ruling: The justices said abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the FDA’s approval of the medication, as they did not show that they had been harmed by the availability of abortion pills. [AP]
What it means: The FDA’s existing guidelines around expanded abortion pill access will remain in effect for now, including allowing women to obtain the pill within 10 weeks of gestation instead of seven. [NBC News]

3 QUESTIONS
...about inside out 2.
Pixar’s coming-of-age movie Inside Out 2 is in theaters. I talked to entertainment reporter Laura Clark about how it differs from its 2015 predecessor.
Lily: What’s this sequel about?
Laura: Inside Out 2 revisits Riley and her emotions, but now she’s a teen navigating different friendships. New emotions, led by Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke), join the headquarters inside Riley’s mind.
Lily: You wrote that the director sought advice from teen girls. Why take that extra step?
Laura: Director Kelsey Mann told me that because he isn’t a teen himself, he wanted to keep the story authentic. The girls were dubbed “Riley’s Crew” and gave feedback on what resonated and what didn’t.
Lily: Is it worth a watch?
Laura: I definitely think so! Inside Out 2 is very family-friendly, and I found that it tackles awkward emotions in an accessible, funny and visually vibrant way.
What else should you know about Inside Out 2 ? Read Laura’s reporting .

US weather: Freak summer snow to hit parts of the North while South bakes in heatwave
Freak summer snow will cover parts of the US this week as a ‘winter storm’ whips through on an ‘energetic jet stream’.
As southern states bake in what is shaping up to be a heatwave to smash records, the north will freeze.
A bitter plunge from Canada and the Pacific Northwest will put swathes of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada on snow alert.
The US National Weather Service (NOAA) has a raft of alerts in force across the region including a ‘Winter Weather Advisory’, a ‘Freeze Watch’ and ‘Frost Advisories’.
A spokesman said: “An energetic jet stream will move quickly into the Pacific Northwest and this system will usher a dose of cold air through the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies, where late-season wet snow is expected to persist over the higher elevations of the northern Rockies Monday into Tuesday.
“A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for these higher elevations while freeze and Frost Warnings are in effect over portions of the interior Pacific Northwest.
“This energetic system will bring quite a bit of wind across the Great Basin and the northern into the central Rockies and northern Plains by Tuesday morning.”
Cold weather across northern states will bring a brief relief before heat from the south arrives.
Temperatures will soar into the 100Fs this week as hot air surges up from the Caribbean.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
・ US weather: Northeast to see first heatwave of year as mercury surges to over 90F
・ US weather: Americans warned to brace for deadly ‘derechos’ thunderstorms
・ US weather: America to get ‘no rest’ as thunderstorms to last until mid-July
In contrast, thermometers in the north will dip to freezing as a bitter ‘plume’ descends through Canada.
Jim Dale, US weather correspondent and meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “In the north of the country, this is the cold before the heat as a plume of cold air comes in from Canada.
“This is going to be at the start of the week, and affect the northwest of the country, into the Rockies where there will be some snow over high ground.
“Then there is going to be a major switch towards the middle and end of the week when the heat spreads across the whole country.”
To the southeast, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and surrounding states will be on storm alert as a belt of ‘tropical moisture’ hits.
People in the region are waned to brace for travel chaos and flash floods as rivers and streams overtop.
AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Alex DaSilva said: “All eyes will turn to the western Gulf of Mexico, specifically the Bay of Campeche, where we could see tropical development.
“Regardless of development, this storm can bring heavy rain to the Louisiana and Texas coasts.”
Weather Channel meteorologist Jonathan Erdman added: “Florida's heavy rain threat is from a combination of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico and a Bermuda high that shifted east pulling deep moisture from the Caribbean Sea to Florida.
“Computer forecast models suggest the upper-air pattern will change enough to slide a conveyor belt of deep, tropical moisture westward and this would bring locally heavy rain to parts of the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle as far west as Texas.”
