Review: 2023 Jetour Dashing 1.5T 6DCT

The Jetour Dashing is an automotive oddity: A fully realized vehicle from a brand that didn’t exist until just a few years ago. But a brand backed by big pockets. Built on the new Kunlun vehicle architecture as a joint-venture between Chery Automotive and Huawei, the Dashing serves as a testbed for technologies such as plug-in electrification and Level 2 autonomous driving. Real cutting-edge stuff.

But locally, Jetour will focus on covering the competitive lower-to-middle segments of the market first, ranging from the P699k Ice Cream EV up to the P1.499 million X70 Plus SUV. The Dashing, at P1.329 million , may be near the top of that, but is comfortably cheaper than many like-for-like competitors.

It certainly doesn’t look cheap. The car’s original Chinese name, “Dasheng,” roughly translates to ‘loud.’ And the styling certainly is. It cobbles together bits of Lamborghini, Jaguar, Hyundai, and Lexus into something more cohesive than that laundry list suggests. It’s quite striking, with its muscular lines, checkerboard grille, Jaguar-smooth flanks and hidden door handles, and that slashing rear end, bookended by taillights that look like LED renditions of waving checkered flags.

Panel fit is commendably tight, especially around the frenched-in fender guards. The only naff bits are the rather glossy cladding on the C-Pillars and the plastic assembly housing the rear camera and third brake light. The rest is solid and sits nicely on 19-inch two-tone wheels with relief-cut plastic inserts, wrapped in meaty 235/55 R19 Wan-Li Flash AS028 tires.

The Dashing features a clean, upright dashboard sitting behind a large 12.8-inch touchscreen. A bit sad we don’t have the 15.6-inch 2K screen from the top-spec Chinese variant, but this is still comfortably biggest-in-class.

The interior borrows heavily from sports car themes, with black and red leather seats with suede inserts and one-piece seat backs. Dashboard panels textured to look like naked carbon look better than actual naked carbon fiber, and the open inner door handles feature leather pull-straps. Most high-contact surfaces are soft-touch, though the rear door cards are of noticeably harder plastic than the fronts. Par for the course, nowadays.

There’s a dual cellphone tray featuring 12V, USB-A, USB-C, and an astonishingly fast 50W wireless charging pad. There are three further USB-A slots inside and behind the center box, where there’s a cubby near the floor for gadget charging. While you’re down there charging your phone, take time to admire the quilted leather floor mats. Good luck keeping them clean, but dear Lord are they lovely.

Front seat space is expansive, though the center console does feel an inch or two too wide. There’s lots of elbow room in the cavernous rear seat and a nice bit of adjustable recline. The trunk features a tonneau cover and a split-level floor panel slot, allowing you to choose between maximum cargo or a flat loading floor. There’s an extra floor panel underneath that so your emergency equipment and tools aren’t sitting on top of a naked spare tire.

Engine performance

While the Dashing’s engine bay can accommodate everything up to an insane 326hp plug-in hybrid, the local 1.5-liter turbo looks a bit lost in all that space and plastic cladding. With 156hp and 230Nm of torque transmitted to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, it scoots from 0-100kph in around 11.2sec. Not quite in tune with the racy looks.

Fuel economy is difficult to measure—due to reasons we’ll discuss later—but hovers between 18-20km/L at 80kph in Eco Mode, and between 6-8km/L in traffic, about what you’d expect given the power and size. No paddle shifters here, but you get a manual mode on the shift lever, as well as a Sport Mode accessible through the in-vehicle menus.

Ride and handling

Even in Sport Mode, the engine doesn’t promise a lot of high-rpm fireworks. But the low-down grunt and tight gearing make for quite a bit of fun on twisty roads. The steering is responsive, if not particularly tactile, and the Dashing corners flat, even through tighter corners. The only thing impeding progress is the messy engine overrun when you let off the accelerator, which is the last thing you want when diving into a corner under the brakes.

Sport Mode, for all its fun, is too jumpy for city traffic and tends to lurch from a stop with the Auto-Hold feature toggled on. Switched to Eco Mode, pedal response and shifts become a bit too lazy. It can take over a second to get up and go when you pull out to overtake. But if you don’t mind hanging back, it’s a perfectly fine way to eat up the kilometers.

Thanks to the sporty set-up, the ride is a bit firm, the big HT tires thumping and humming over certain surfaces, but there’s a soft edge to the secondary ride that makes it easy to live with. Sound insulation is pretty good overall, that big bluff front end keeps buffetting around the front pillars and wing mirrors minimal. I’ve sat at 100 km/h watching puddles of rain sit nearly still on the hood for kilometers on end.

Around town, that tall hood makes navigating traffic and parking lots a bit of a chore. And the tiny rear window doesn’t help, either. Thankfully, you get a 360-degree camera that turns on automatically when it detects objects in your blind spots or when you’re turning or backing up. Unfortunately, turning it on or adjusting it manually is a fiddly affair.

Extra features

And herein lies the issue with the Dashing’s high-tech vehicle systems. Every function beyond basic driving and door controls is handled through the center touchscreen. It’s a great touchscreen, 12.8-inch wide, with smooth touch response and low-lag wireless screen mirroring capabilities. It takes a little time to download and set up CarBitLife, but once it’s there, tethering is painless, and it’s smooth, bright, and sharp. But that big screen can be a big distraction. Because you have to use it for every. Little. Thing.

Need to adjust the A/C? You can toggle the fan speed with the lefthand scroll wheel-joystick on the steering wheel, but you need to wade into the Climate Control menu to adjust the temperature, recirculation, vent control, or de-mist outside the touchscreen.

Need to adjust the side mirrors? Enter Car Settings, then the maintenance submenu then the side mirror submenu. Adjust mirrors with both scroll sticks.

Auto hold? Hill-descent control? Vehicle submenu. Switching between Eco and Sport mode? Submenu. Resetting the economy gauge? Yet another submenu, then hold down the left stick to reset the meter. Don’t hold it too long, otherwise you’ll activate A/C Max mode. And this doesn’t reset the kilometer count, just the eco-gauge, which starts, weirdly, at 33km/L. Which left us to manually calculate economy in the end.

Once you get used to these ergonomic quirks, the Dashing is oddly likable. The big screen is great for watching movies while parked. Low latency, good sound, and crisp visuals. The customizable mood lighting is great for establishing, uh, mood. Keyless entry, automatic hidden door latches and a kick-to-open auto-tailgate all make for easy grocery loading and passenger pick-up. The AC, once properly set, is powerfully cold, and the giant dual pane sunroof, lets in a lot of light without letting in a lot of heat.

You don’t get a lot of the active driving aids you get on higher spec models, but you get cruise, and that 360 camera turns itself on when it thinks you might need it: in tight traffic, while making turns, or even when navigating a drive-thru. A simple, but nifty bit of vehicular automation, that.

Of course, the Dashing is capable of quite a bit more in terms of automation. Up to Level 2, in fact. But we’re not getting that here - yet. Jetour is taking baby steps into the market with its local line-up, and while that’s a good plan, we hope that they would take some more risks. The Dashing has the potential to be the compact-midsize counterpart to the subcompact Geely Coolray. The sporty vibe reminds us of the old MG GS or the early front-drive Sorento. Also muscular, athletic bruisers with lots of space and personality - but lacking a bit in terms of power and stand-out technology. And the infotainment system, while impressive in some ways, could use some fettling and a better interface to take advantage of the big display and processing power on hand.

In the end, the Dashing is a fine crossover for the price, Reasonably specced, with good amenities and killer looks. Hopefully, if sales are good, we will get more powerful variants down the line. There’s a lot of potential in this product, and if the rest of the Jetour line is similar, a lot of potential in the brand, as well.

Recently, the global naming event of Jetour‘s new A-class SUV X-1 is completed. The finalized name is DASHING. This activity “WOW, NEW MEMBER” held over 30 days and gathered ideas all over the world. “DASHING” was elected as the name with the highest votes.

The name of Jetour X-1, “DASHING”, means “Confident, Elegant and Fashion”. It finely corresponds to the design style of Fashionable, Trendy, and Attractive. It helps to establish the customer’s perception of X-1. And the pronunciation is similar to its Chinese name “Dasheng”. Based on these reasons, it is easy to find why the DASHING gets the highest votes. It is well deserved!

Besides DASHING, we also got other creative and meaningful names in this event. Some are cleverly combined with insects, fish, birds, and beasts, such as “MARLIN”, “SHARP”, “BEAST”, etc. And some creative ideas are very refreshing with the technical elements, imagination, and expectations of the ideal vehicle in their minds. Such as “UNIVERSE”, “X-VISION”, etc.

Jetour DASHING is developed by global strategy of Jetour, it aims at the overseas market of A-class SUV, and combines fashion and intelligence. The design of DASHING focuses on the latest fashion trend. The borderless-style air intake grille, overall large fastback shape, and bilateral four-outlet exhaust ports highlight the aesthetics and dynamic figure. For the interior design: a 15.6-inch central control LCD screen, with an 8-inch LCD instrument panel and a HUD head-up display, which can achieve triple-screen interaction, used to be the configuration that can only be found in some luxury brands. In addition, the high-tech electronic central shift, the "Queen's co-pilot" equipped with leg and foot-rests, and laser engraved door panels provide customers with a high-satisfaction driving experience.

Since the beginning of research and development, DASHING has paid special attention to the co-creation of customers. From the product design to the configuration, the feedback and verification of customers play an important role. In this event, Jetour connects customers directly through a naming event by inviting customers to join the activity. A true practice of “born for customers”. Jetour Dashing Overview

The Dashing is Jetour’s entry into the compact crossover category here in the Philippines. First launched in 2018, the Dashing is the first vehicle to be built on the brand’s Kunlun Architecture platform.  When it was introduced globally, the Jetour Dashing came available in two variants, namely a conventional petrol and PHEV plug-in hybrid versions. The former offers two engine options: a 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, or a 1.6-liter turbo engine with a seven-speed CDT gearbox. The 1.5-liter turbo engine delivers a peak power of 156 horsepower and a maximum torque of 230 Nm, while the 1.6-liter turbo engine generates up to 197 horsepower and 290 Nm of peak torque.

Here in the Philippines, the Dashing is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged power unit paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The Dashing is only available in one single variant, slotting itself into the competitive five-seater crossover SUV segment.

The Jetour Dashing was first introduced to the world in 2022 and was Jetour’s answer to the increasing demand for sporty SUVs. Featuring aggressive styling and great value for money, the sporty SUV was well received and steadily appeared in international Jetour showrooms. 

Here in the Philippines, Jetour made a grand entrance into the Philippine market by showcasing  a lineup of four cars, namely the X70, X70 Plus, the Ice Cream EV, and leading the charge was the sleek and stylish Dashing SUV. The Dashing along with other cars in Jetour’s lineup was officially launched in the Philippine market on April 13, 2023, on the first day of the 2023 Manila International Auto Show.

The Jetour Dashing is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that puts out 156 hp and a maximum torque of 230 Nm. This engine is paired with a six-speed wet dual-clutch transmission sending power to the front wheels.

Underneath, the Jetour Dashing is supported by MacPherson independent struts up front and a torsion beam suspension setup at the rear. Braking power comes from disc brakes on all four wheels. The front wheels get ventilated disc brakes while solid discs are fitted on the rear wheels.

For entertainment and convenience, the Jetour Dashing is equipped with a 12.8-inch touchscreen paired with six speakers. The Dashing comes with a smart key with an auto-lock and window lift function when exiting the vehicle, and a function to start the engine from outside. 

As for safety, the Dashing has advanced driver-assist features which include, a blind-spot detection system, a lane-change warning system, a rear parking sensor, a rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree parking camera.

In the entire Jetour lineup, the Dashing is the most unique in terms of looks. Compared to the X70 and X70 Plus which bear the relatively conservative looks normally found in most crossovers, the Dashing is bold and aggressive. Up front, there’s no getting away from the Dashing’s massive grille. The grille is composed of horizontal slats that form a honeycomb pattern across the front end. At the edges are the headlights which give the illusion that the Dashing’s grille extends all the way to the edges of the bumper. Up top, the Dashing’s sleek DRLs can be found which give the crossover a dominating look. 

At the sides, you’ll find 19-inch alloy wheels which give the crossover its height as well as fender flares that give the wheel wells a bit of muscle. At the back, the Dashing has sleek LED taillights that extend from the back and to the sides slightly. At the top of the tailgate, you’ll find an additional brake light mounted on the spoiler. At the bottom portion of the bumper, there’s a pair of reflectors mounted at the sides.

Inside, the Jetour Dashing has a modern interior that carries a premium aesthetic thanks to its layout and design. The interior of the Jetour comes with a choice of two colors, black or white. A minimalist design is used in a number of key areas, ranging from the two-spoke steering wheel to the infotainment display, and even the shift knob. The center console does not feature many physical buttons as most of the Dashing’s in-car controls are consolidated in the 12.8-inch touchscreen display.

Regarding safety, the Dashing is equipped with advanced driver-assist features such as a blind-spot detection system, a lane-change warning system, a rear parking sensor, a rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree parking camera.

Other features include ABS, traction control, an anti-rollover system, and a tire pressure sensor. The Dashing has dual front airbags and two airbags for the passengers. ISOFIX tethers, child locks, and speed-sensing door locks are also equipped to help facilitate the safety of younger passengers.

One of the latest generation midsize SUVs from the Chinese carmaker Jetour, the Dashing is positioned as a luxury premium compact SUV with a new-age design and premium and well-built interior. The Jetour Dashing was launched in the UAE car market in 2023 in a single fully-loaded variant with colour options like Gray, Red, Black, White, Blue, Light Gray and Green.

Jetour Dashing Interior & Features

The overall interior layout of the Jetour Dashing is clean and contemporary. The cabin has a multi-layered design for the dashboard, with soft-touch black plastics at the top, a textured bronze layer in the middle, and a white leatherette layer at the bottom. The door panels and leatherette seats are also finished in white, which looks premium but tends to get dirty quickly.

The Jetour Dashing has a unique-looking two-spoke multi-functional, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel with a gloss black theme for the spokes and an octagonal centre boss, behind which there is a minimalist LCD screen for basic data display of the instrument console. The door panels also have tiny LCD screens neatly integrated within them, which read out outside temperature and in-cabin filtration data. 

Catching one’s attention here in the cabin is the massive 15.6-inch rectangular touchscreen infotainment system, which also serves as the window to operate the dual-zone automatic climate control and the 8-speaker Hi-Fi sound system. Below the infotainment system, there are sleek trapezoidal AC vents, while the centre tunnel between the front seats has premium-looking bronze surrounds with cup holders, a wireless charging pad, a transmission knob and an electronic parking brake placed on them.

The sports seats of the Jetour Dashing are electronically adjustable, heated and ventilated, with the driver’s seat also having height adjustment and memory functions. The other features that make the cabin of the Jetour Dashing feel premium and practical are ambient lighting, front and rear centre armrests, 60:40 split rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate and more. 

Dashing Exterior

The Jetour Dashing's curvaceous design and slightly slanted bonnet might make one believe that it is more of a crossover than an SUV, which is true to some extent. However, the high ground clearance, aggressive front and rear profiles, and heightened bonnet give it a strong road presence.

The Jetour Dashing welcomes one with its bold-looking fascia comprising of a massive, imposing front grille, which has a segmented design with large gloss black inserts that are spread across the width of the front profile. The corners of this fascia are occupied by vertically stacked LED projectors for the main headlamps, while the daytime running LED strips are placed on the upper corners of this fascia, on the edges of the bonnet. 

The side profile of the Jetour Dashing is where all the curves showcase their magic, with the SUV getting a nice flowing bonnet and roofline and smooth curves through the door panels and fenders. Adding more character to the side design of the Dashing is a broad hump over the rear wheels and muscular cladding over wheel arches and the lower part of door panels. The large 20-inch machined alloy wheels, door-mounted rearview mirrors, and chrome surrounds for the window panels add a premium touch to the side profile of the Jetour Dashing.

The rear profile of the Jetour Dashing has wishbone-shaped combination LED tail lamps, which are placed horizontally on the sides of the boot lid. While the rear windscreen of the Jetour Dashing has a raked design with a sporty-looking roof spoiler, the boot lid has a trapezoidal housing for the license plate. The sporty-looking rear diffuser of the Jetour Dashing has sleek reflectors on its upper corners. 

Jetour Dashing Ride & Handling

The Jetour Dashing has an independent suspension setup at both ends, comprising Macpherson struts at the front and multi-link at the rear. With a plush suspension setup, the Jetour Dashing feels supple at both lower and higher speeds. The three driving modes on offer in the Jetour Dashing – Economy, Comfort and Sport – also deliver a specified driving experience depending on the driver’s preferences. 

Dashing Engine & Fuel Consumption

The only engine option Jetour has made available in the Dashing is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard. This engine delivers 197 bhp of maximum power and 290 Nm of torque, and while it feels strong on paper, the real-world performance could have been better. 

Jetour Dashing Braking & Safety

The Jetour Dashing has a plethora of safety features and driving assistance aids, the long list of which includes adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, high beam assist, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lateral collision warning, blind spot detection system, backward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, 360-degree parking camera and driving record function. Other basic safety features on offer include ABS, EBD, brake assist, six airbags, traction control, electronic stability control, hill start assist, hill descent control, front and rear parking sensors and tyre pressure monitoring system.

2023 Jetour Dashing aims to charm PH market with P1.329M price tag

The Chinese car brand Jetour has officially entered the Philippine market. This was formalized during the Jetour Auto Philippines, Inc. (JAPI) brand launch at Okada, Manila, on March 15, 2023.  

The all-new 2023 Jetour Dashing

Along with its official entry into the Philippines, the brand also launched the Jetour Dashing as its flagship model. It fits into the compact crossover SUV segment, and it is aiming to make a big splash in the local market with its aggressive exterior, that’s combined with loads of tech and amenities. 

Let’s check out the Jetour Dashing in detail to get a clearer picture of what this all-new crossover is like.  

The Dashing assumes a bold and eye-catching design. This is particularly true for its front end, which is filled to the brim with sharp lines and details.  

Notable details on its front portion include a pair of sharp LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), a large and aggressive grille, as well as a sporty lower front bumper. Its main trapezoidal-shaped headlamps are then positioned on either side of the grille.

The look of the Dashing then gets a bit quieter, and smoother towards the sides. To reinforce this, its door handles are of the pop-up variety and are concealed when not in use. It also gets a graceful window line, that slopes up towards a silver trim piece just above the rearmost window.  

Just like other crossovers in the market , its wheel arches are also capped by black plastic claddings which provide its appearance a dash of robustness.  

The sharp design cues are taken up a notch once again when viewing the rear. There are plenty of sharp lines in this portion, especially on the power tailgate and on its rear side corners. The rear section is further enhanced by a pair of thin LED taillights, as well as a sizable diffuser-like rear bumper.

Completing the look of the Jetour Dashing is a set of 19-inch, alloy wheels. This set comes in a spoked, two-tone color scheme. 

Where dimensions are concerned, this crossover is 4,590mm long, 1900mm wide, and 1,685mm in height. It also has a wheelbase length of 2,720mm, and a ground clearance of 160mm. 

Step inside the Dashing and you’ll see a minimalist-style cabin with ample space for up to five occupants.

Starting with the dashboard, this part mainly assumes a straightforward appearance consisting mostly of straight lines. However, many surfaces of the Jetour’s insides are soft to the touch and are decorated with either silver or black trim pieces. 

The driver of the Dashing is then provided with a tilt & telescopic adjustable flat-bottom steering wheel, a push-to-start button, a leather-wrapped elbow rest, and a manually adjustable driver’s seat.

All the seats for this model are wrapped in leather. The second-row seats come with a 60:40 split-fold function. The occupants of the Jetour are then kept cool by a dual-zone automatic air-conditioning system.  

Tech & Safety 

Found floating on the dashboard of the Jetour is a sizable 12.8-inch touchscreen headunit, which is responsible for controlling most of the car’s features including the air-conditioning.   

The said headunit then gets several connectivity options including a Type C USB port, Bluetooth, etc. It is then linked to a Sony sound system.

Over to the driver’s side, a smaller digital gauge cluster sits just behind the steering wheel. The driver can likewise remotely start or open the vehicle’s power trunk via a smart keyfob.  

Safety aboard the Dashing is handled by a number of advanced driver-assistive safety features. This includes adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lateral and rear collision warning, etc. 

Other safety features present aboard this crossover include anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a tire pressure monitor, anti-rollover mitigation, dual-front airbags, and side airbags, among others. 

Propelling the 2023 Jetour Dashing is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engine that’s capable of producing up to 154 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its front wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Braking for this model is handled by disc brakes for all four wheels, and it also has an electronic parking brake. For suspensions, the Jetour Dashing gets a MacPherson strut-type for the front and a multi-link suspension for the rear.  

Pricing for the 2023 Jetour Dashing starts at Php 1.329 million. Note that JAPI said that the sales period for the Dashing will start on April 2023.
