Guy Sebastian is an Australian singer/songwriter originally from Adelaide who won the very first series of Australian Idol and has become one of the country's best selling artists.

Guy Theodore Sebastian is one of Australia's most successful artists who received his commercial break after being crowned the victor of the first season of Australian Idol in 2003. Following on from his talent show background he was chosen as a judge of the Australian X Factor between 2010 and 2012. His first album titled 'Just As I Am' was released shortly after his win and topped the Australian album charts upon release, it now holds a six times platinum selling certificate. The following six albums all hit the top 10 on the albums chart and hold at least a platinum selling certificiate. He has enjoyed similar success with his singles, appearing twelve times on the top ten, six of which topped the chart. To date Sebastian is the only male artist in Australian chart history to score six number one singles.

'Battle Scars' is perhaps his most successful single to date, achieving six times platinum selling certificate in Australia as well as charting on numerous international charts including New Zealand, Norway and the United States. To date Scott has accumulated 51 platinum certificates and four gold making him the most successful Australian Idol contestant of all time and one of Australia's best selling artists.

His career has also been a critical success, to date he has been nominated 24 times for ARIA Awards nominations and has won four. When Australia released their list of thehighest selling singles of the decade, Sebastian's first release 'Angels Brought Me Here' was named as the top selling song.

Live reviews

The only male artist to make Australian chart history by achieving six number one singles started his career by being the first winner of Australian Idol in 2003. After a successful career, Guy Sebastian even went on to be a judge in the 2010-2012 Australian X Factor show. There's no question that the singer has talent, he wouldn't have been able to get away with gaining his success through auto tune as he won the talent show with his gorgeous voice alone singing Stevie Wonder's 'Ribbon in the Sky'. His second album 'Beautiful Life' included songs he wrote with Robin Thicke and took a more R&B style to it than his usual music, which had a great response from his fans. He has such clear admiration and appreciation for his fans, which is evident from his performance on the Australian X Factor in 2012 as he kept thanking the public for his success. It's extremely refreshing to see someone talented, who has come so far to be down to earth and understanding of how they got there. I don’t think much of him as a performer, his acts are a bit standard and he needs lots of fire and backing dancers to make it more interesting, but there’s no questioning his singing ability which left me with goose bumps.

Back in the days when talent programmes were legitimate starting pathways to a successful career in music, the Australian version of Pop Idol discovered an impressive singer/songwriter called Guy Sebastian. Fast forward twelve years and he has made chart history in Australia selling millions of albums and charting at #1 with numerous singles. He may not be hugely known in other parts of the world but he is a mega star in his homeland and his live shows have a suitable atmosphere.

From the moment the lights dim the screams are completely deafening as Sebastian's entourage and band slowly lead onto the stage followed by the man himself. Years on in his career and Guy has established exactly the kind of artist he wants to be as he carefully toes the line between pop, dance and R & B throughout the show via 'Like It Like That' 'Like A Drum' and 'Get Along'. He still performs his debut number one single 'Angels Brought Me Here' if only to hear his deafening choir of followers join in for the chorus. It is the new track 'Battle Scars' in collaboration with Lupe Fiasco that receives the biggest cheers of the night and reassures Sebastian that his career will keep raising higher and higher.

From Australian Idol to the Titus Day Drama, Let’s Get Into the Career of Guy Sebastian

Image of POPSUGAR Team

If you’re an Aussie who was glued to their TV screen in the early 2000s, chances are you were a fan of “Australian Idol” .

The beloved singing competition ran for seven seasons from 2003 to 2009 (before returning this year) and was the ultimate platform for aspiring musicians to showcase their talent to the nation.

Hosted by the charming Osher Günsberg (then known as Andrew G) and James Matheson, the show was judged by a panel of music industry experts including Dicko (Ian Dickson), Marcia Hines, Mark Holden and, later, Kyle Sandilands. With their witty critiques and occasional bickering, these judges became household names and added to the show’s undeniable charm.

Of course, the real stars of the show were the contestants themselves. Over the years, we saw some truly incredible talent grace the stage, from Guy Sebastian in season one to Stan Walker in season seven. And who could forget the emotional moments when we watched these talented individuals rise to fame before our very eyes?

We’re taking a look back at the very first winner of Australian Idol, Guy Sebastian, and where it all began.

In November 2022, the court found that Titus Day had embezzled more than $600,000 of Sebastian’s money over the years, including earnings for being a support act for Taylor Swift.

Day was found guilty by a jury in June of 34 counts of embezzlement, totalling $624,675, relating to earnings that should have been transferred to Sebastian’s bank accounts between 2013 and 2020. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail.

Titus Day and Guy Sebastian’s professional relationship began in 2007, when Sebastian was signed to Day’s agency, “22 Management”. The two continued to work together until 2017.

Guy Sebastian’s Ex-Manager Titus Day Found GUILTY of Embezzling Funds After Mammoth Court Case

Day was on trial for embezzling over $900,000 from the singer..

guy sebastian guilty

After a mammoth trial, Guy Sebastian ‘s former manager Titus Day has been found guilty of embezzling some of the $900,000 the singer claimed he was owed.

The former colleagues have been embroiled in a mammoth court case for some weeks now after Sebastian discovered funds had gone missing across his decade-spanning partnership with Day.

On July 1, the New South Wales District Court found Day guilty of more than 30 charges, however, he was acquitted of others.

Deliberations began on June 23.

This follows a ruling on May 9 that saw Day found not guilty on three counts, with 47 other embezzlement charges still to be considered at the time.

Before the verdict was cast, the case had been interrupted several times due to numerous significant occurrences, including the death of its first judge, Peter Zahra SC , and jurors falling ill.

Sebastian also contracted COVID-19 during proceedings.

Speaking out for the first time since the guilty verdict on July 1, Sebastian said it was “shocking” to learn of the extent to which Day “betrayed” him.

“It was not only shocking but heartbreaking to discover the depth of betrayal and dishonesty that I uncovered over these last four-and-a-half-years,” he wrote on Instagram.

“There’s nothing more important than trust in an artist/manager relationship. The thing is, Titus was more than just my manager, he was one of my closest mates.”

The singer also said the proceedings were “tougher” than he anticipated, and often felt at times that he was the one on trial, “rather than the victim”.

Jules Sebastian Took the Stand as a Witness in the Embezzlement Trial Against Titus Day

Sebastian’s wife, Jules Sebastian , briefly took the stand as a witness on Thursday, June 2, to explain that she was offered $15K to be an ambassador for PlayKids, an early childhood education app.

Mrs Sebastian told the court that her takings from the ambassadorship were $6403, which she received from Day.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jules Sebastian (@julessebastian)

Her appearance in court came after a jury was informed that her husband received a large sum to the tune of $2.9 million for a six-show tour. The jury also heard that the singer contacted a superfan to aid in the case against his ex-manager.

Damien Luscombe , the boss of White Sky accounting firm, took to the witness box that same day to give evidence relating to his work managing Sebastian’s finances in 2015.

During cross-examination from Day’s barrister, Dominic Toomey SC , Luscombe agreed that his company received a document showing a financial breakdown of Sebastian’s Breakdown tour.

The court heard that the document was prepared by Dan Redgrave , the tour manager, and showed a total income of $2.9 million.

After tour costs — including $712,000 for venue charges and $1.5 million for on-road costs — were deducted, the jury was told that Sebastian pocketed close to $236,000 in profit.

As Day’s contract with Sebastian exhibited, the singer’s former manager was entitled to 20 per cent of the takings, or $47,000.

Guy Sebastian’s Superfan Christan Bugno Gave Evidence

Christian Bugno , one of Sebastian’s super fans, was next to give evidence via video link from Las Vegas.

Bugno told the court that after Sebastian performed at his 21st birthday over ten years ago, he paid The Voice coach to perform at his wedding in Venice in 2016.

christian bugno

When questioned further about his relationship with the singer, the super fan admitted he gave “untrue” information to the court. He confessed that he had communication with Sebastian more recently than “many years” ago, as he had previously testified.

He also added that Sebastian had pleaded with him via text message to assist in the trial, as recently as May 24.

“Brother sorry but this is so urgent cause I’m in court, is there any way you could find out who paid for Titus’ flight to Venice. [sic]” The ex Australian Idol winner texted about an hour after he finished giving evidence at court.

It was then heard that Bugno told the singer that he and his father covered the cost of Sebastian and Day’s flights to attend the Venice wedding.

Sebastian responded: “Thanks brother that is amazing timing … I’ll call you once this is done and I’m finished giving evidence… sorry to trouble you with this”.

It was then revealed that Bugno and Sebastian had further discussions about the former’s communication with Vogue Entertainment Agency, which was initially enlisted to help arrange the performer’s gig at the wedding.

christian bugno wedding

After Sebastian asked if the agency was used to book the gig, Bugno replied via text stating, “no we did it directly with Titus and 6 Degrees” [sic].

“I will elaborate once this is all over… thanks for chasing this,” Sebastian responded. “I’m so embarrassed I’m having to include you in this.”

Bugno concluded the thread: “Bro don’t be embarrassed, here to help and provide evidence and information that is needed. [sic]”

Guy Sebastian Denied Ripping Off His Manager Titus Day

During previous questioning, Sebastian denied ripping off his manager by not revealing he performed a show at a car dealership for a $30,000 payday.

The singer told Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday that he performed a gig at a Toyota Dealership on February 2, 2017.

Having recently bought a four-wheel-drive from the dealership, Sebastian said he may have told a journalist at the event that he was performing for free. However, he could not be certain if he had, in fact, received payment.

“I can’t remember,” he said. “I may have been.”

Still, had he been paid Sebastian said he would have disclosed this to Day, who was entitled to 20 per cent of any performance fee.

When pressed as to whether he could have forgotten to disclose payment, the Gold singer said it “would not have been an intention” to do so.

Records Show Guy Sebastian WAS Paid for Car Dealership Gig

Day’s barrister then showed Sebastian financial records that detailed payments from the dealership amounting to $30K.

Mr Toomey then suggested Sebastian had not told his manager about the performance, to which he reiterated would not have been “intentional”.

“I don’t recall getting paid that. It was never, ever even close to an intention for me to ever rip Mr Day off, ever,” he said. “And if that’s an isolated thing I will look at that. I will cop that. That obviously is not great.”

Guy Sebastian Recalls Facing a Home Intruder

Under cross-examination during the trial, the singer recounted a time that he had to rush back to his house from his recording studio as an intruder was trying to break into his home.

The incident was relevant as it was included as a part of an Apprehended Violence Order that Day had taken out against his former client several years ago, after Sebastian had reported the alleged embezzlement to police.

“I had a brand newborn. I was at the recording studio and had a call from my wife. A person was trying to get through the little boy’s window,” Sebastian explained.

guy sebastian jules sebastian kids

He described coming home to find an intruder “swinging on the gate” of his Maroubra home.

“I grabbed him and held him while my wife was on the phone to the police. I chased after him, he started to leg it.”

Day’s lawyer question Sebastian as to if he “headbutted” the intruder. The Voice judge said that he had not, but, “has told people” that he did.

“I agree I’ve told people I headbutted him… not as an intentional headbutt. You’re implying I headbutted him as an intentional act.”

Sebastian said he was of the belief that Day was “trying to weaponise” the incident by including it in his AVO.

The Judge Presiding Over the Case Tragically Died

On May 9, the case – which has been staggering from the outset – was rocked once again after the judge who was hearing the trial tragically passed away.

Peter Zahra suffered a stroke and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred hospital in Sydney’s Inner West, where he later sadly passed away.

guy sebastian piano

The jury was informed of the news by Judge James Bennett  on Monday morning.

Day’s trial – which began on May 3 – had to be adjourned until the next week.

The announcement came less than a week after Sebastian revealed that he had contracted Covid-19, which itself stalled procedings already.

Guy Sebastian’s Earnings Were Exposed During the Trial

Since the hearing began, records have revealed the ‘Battle Scars’ singer’s huge payday.

The amounts that Sebastian was paid for various appearances were disclosed in court, with the largest sum totalling $494,360. The singer was paid the almost half-a-million-dollar fee to support  Taylor Swift  during the Australian leg of her 2013  The Red Tour .

Accordingly, The Voice Australia judge was so cashed up that he failed to notice he was missing almost $1 million.

Sebastian reportedly only detected this when he found “anomalies” in his financial records, after having terminated his contract with Day in 2017.

He launched a civil claim against him the following year. The talent manager was later arrested in July 2020.

Why Is Guy Sebastian’s Manager Titus Day On Trial?

Day — who served as Sebastian’s agent between 2013 and 2020 — is currently facing 50 charges of embezzlement as a clerk or servant, plus 50 counts of stealing. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The charges are in relation to over $900,000 of missing performance fees and royalties that Day allegedly received on Sebastian’s behalf over the course of seven years.

guy sebastian

The Crown has claimed that Day kept the portions of money for himself, rather than forwarding it to his client.

Sebastian  is expected to give evidence against his former manager throughout the trial, which is taking place at Sydney’s Downing Street court and is expected to last for at least five weeks.

Guy Sebastian talks “painful” legal battle after former manager found guilty of embezzlement

The singer said the case was "about setting a precedent to make sure this doesn’t happen”

guy sebastian tour manager

In a new interview, Guy Sebastian has opened up about the court case he underwent as his former manager, Titus Day, was charged with embezzling the singer’s money.

During an interview on KiSS 106.5’s The Kyle And Jackie O Show yesterday (July 13) , Sebastian described his relief following the outcome of the trial, which earlier this month found Day guilty of 34 counts of embezzlement amounting to over $600,000 of the singer’s earnings.

Referencing the verdict, Sebastian said Day faced “a pretty significant charge”, before speaking on the “painful” length of the case, which began with Day’s arrest in 2020 and culminated in his two-month trial.

“It was a painful fight,” Sebastian said. “It just went on for so long. I know I’ve said in the past, I’ve just been so confused by it all, because it’s so hard to imagine that it had to get to that place. It didn’t need to.”

After admitting to the personal toll of the case, Sebastian went on to describe its broader implications. The singer said he realised the case was “bigger than [him]”, and hopes it sets a precedent for smaller artists who don’t have the means to take their management or label to court.

“There’s artists that can’t do what I just did. They can’t go through this process. Like indie artists and people who are just living gig by gig. So I just think it’s beyond me a little bit and it’s more about setting a precedent to make sure this doesn’t happen,” Sebastian said.

Elsewhere, Sebastian discussed the reputational cost of the trial and his fears that his status as a public figure would be used as a “weapon” against him. Sebastian also implied that, due to the way the court system works, some of Day’s evidence caught him by surprise.

Recommended

“The biggest weapon as a public person is they go ‘Oh, if you keep going, I’m going to smash your reputation and I’m going to use my media contacts’, and there’s no control over what they’re telling, the side of the story that they’re spinning to all sorts of people.

“[The defence’s] evidence is provided literally on the spot, so you don’t see any evidence [in advance]. It’s just presented to you on the spot,” Sebastian said.

Day, who will be sentenced in September, will remain on bail after an attempt to have him jailed was dismissed.

Pop star Guy Sebastian says he endured years of “hell” and was driven to “the darkest points in my life” during his fight to bring his now-jailed former manager Titus Day to justice for embezzling his earnings.

Day, 49, was last week jailed for at least 2½ years after he was found guilty by a NSW District Court jury of swindling Mr Sebastian of $620,000 worth of royalties and performance fees.

Day has already flagged his intention to lodge an appeal against the jury’s verdict.

In a victim impact statement tendered to the court and this week released by judge Tim Gartelmann, Mr Sebastian detailed how he had struggled with anger, resentment and trust issues since Day’s deception was uncovered.

“It’s difficult to sum up the impact that Titus Day’s crimes have had. Obviously, I’ve personally been traumatised by this ordeal, but it has impacted so many others beyond myself,” Mr Sebastian said in his two-page victim impact statement.

“From the time I discovered missing money almost five years ago, what he has put me and my family through has been horrific. The financial toll is one thing, but the mental torture that we have had to endure to achieve justice pushed me and my wife to the edge.”

A jury earlier this year found Day guilty of 34 counts of embezzlement. He was found not guilty of a further 13 charges.

The court was told Day embezzled money from Mr Sebastian’s performances, including a tour with Taylor Swift and an ambassadorship with Dreamworld.

Day was Mr Sebastian’s manager since 2009, but the pair had a bitter falling out in 2017. Following their separation, Mr Sebastian claimed he found anomalies in his financial records.

Mr Sebastian detailed how he perceived Day to be “part of my family”; however, “cracks” began to appear.

“Every time I was seeking answers to missing monies, I was met with threats and lies,” Mr Sebastian said.

“I was told if I pursue this, that my reputation would be ruined, my family would be ruined.”

He said Day began to leak false, negative stories to the media and spread his version of events to colleagues in the music industry.

“There are many powerful people that are being told his version of events without seeing any of the evidence and this has been spread throughout the industry I work in and has caused me great harm because it has been perceived as though I am the one at fault,” Mr Sebastian said.

Mr Sebastian said Day was “using my money to bail himself out of these poor decisions which caused him to be backed into a corner financially”.

He said his once-trusted manager had “pulled the rug out” from under his “belief systems”, and he had struggled with anger, resentment and mistrust.

“The psychological impact of this fight for justice has driven me to the point of complete depression,” Mr Sebastian said.

“I have sought therapy to deal with the broken trust, the deception, the betrayal and financial loss. I have been at the darkest points in my life during this process.”

Mr Sebastian said after being told that his tours were unprofitable, he was forced to cut budgets and made decisions to not invest money into attempts to crack overseas markets.

“I couldn’t believe how much money Titus actually took from me,” Mr Sebastian said.

“I was working to the bone, constantly away from my family.”

He described Day as “deplorable” and “evil”, having abused his position of trust.

“This man has put me, my family and those around me through hell,” Mr Sebastian said.

The tour, which is finally being brought Down Under, but fans will have to be quick.
