Here Are all the Cruise Lines That Have Canceled Russia Sailings

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition, canceling seven itineraries

Astrid was the Senior Special Projects Editor at TripSavvy.

is viking cruise line a russian company

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, cruise line after cruise line has altered itineraries with stops in Russian ports or canceled voyages entirely.

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition to this list after a March 17 statement announcing that seven polar voyages are canceled for the summer. An additional four Arctic sailings have new itineraries. "The terrible situation in Ukraine makes planned operations in Russian waters untenable, and we cannot support promoting these trips in any way for the 2022 season," said Angelica Vorea, founder and CEO of parent company Poseidon Arctic Voyages, Ltd.

Carnival Cruise Line, Windstar, and Atlas Ocean Voyages were some of the first big names to announce that they scrapped all stops in St. Petersburg. Carnival announced via Twitter they will be swapping Russia out of all current cruise itineraries in the coming week "once alternative ports can be confirmed." In the same post, the cruise line's holding company, Carnival Corporation, stood by Ukraine in light of the attacks, declaring, "We stand for peace."

Royal Caribbean Group released a statement canceling stops in St. Petersburg for summer 2022 sailings for all its brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silver Sea. "We have planned alternative ports and will communicate itinerary changes in the next few days to our guests and travel partners. Guests can feel comfortable knowing they are able to reschedule their cruise with our Cruise with Confidence program," the statement read.

MSC Cruises, which had four ships scheduled to call in St. Petersburg beginning this May, announced it had suspended all Russian stops and was in negotiations for possible alternative options, including Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tallinn.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings also announced that they would remove Russian and Ukrainian ports from 2022 itineraries across their brands, including Norwegian, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas.

"It's disappointing because St. Petersburg is one of the crown jewels of the Scandinavian itineraries," said Frank Del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, during the company's earnings call last Thursday.

Regent Seven Seas had particularly significant plans for Russia this year, with several stacked itineraries, including the Solovetsky Islands, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, St. Petersburg, and Odessa, Ukraine. Norwegian Cruise Line canceled a majority of its Baltic sailings on the Norwegian Getaway. Some cruise lines are forgoing modification and canceling their itineraries outright. The luxury river cruise line, Scenic, scrapped all of its 2022 Russia cruises. Viking River Cruises canceled all Russian river cruises and its planned Kyiv, Black Sea & Bucharest routes this year due to the events. Russian stops on Viking's ocean itineraries will be modified, and impacted guests and travel advisors will be notified.

The cancellations add to the ripple effect Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused throughout the travel industry. Earlier in March, travel expert and television personality Rick Steves announced he would be canceling all Russian tours that his company, Rick Steves' Europe, had planned this year.

"Our mission ... is to help Americans better know and understand our neighbors through travel," Steves wrote in a blog post from late February. "But when we bring travelers to another country, we also bring their dollars—dollars that would support Putin's aggression. Therefore, as of today, we have canceled all 2022 tours that include a stop in Russia."

A history of Viking River Cruises

Viking River Cruises

In a week which saw Viking River Cruises win the Best River Cruise Line title for an impressive fifth year running at the British Travel Awards 2013, I thought it would be fitting to take a look at the history of this highly successful company.

It’s difficult to keep count of the number of vessels operated by Viking River Cruises, as if you’re a regular visitor to theses blog pages, you’ll know that the line regularly announces plans to expand its fleet. Currently however, the line operates 37 different vessels on a wide range of itineraries throughout Europe, Russia, Ukraine, China and Southeast Asia. The Viking Longships, which feature the line’s most innovative design features, currently comprise two thirds of the fleet.

The history of Viking River Cruises can be traced back to the mid 1990’s when its chairman and founder, Torstein Hagen, took a Russian river cruise and thought it would be a good idea to found his own river cruise company, so others could share the experience which he had enjoyed. It wasn’t something Hagen leaped into without experience however, as he had been CEO of the now defunct Royal Viking Line and was also a board member at Holland America Line.

Fittingly, the company’s first ships, purchased in 1997, were Russian and in 2000 it acquired a large portion of the long-established KD River Cruises, bringing its number of vessels to 26, meaning that, even 13 years ago, it owned more vessels than any other river cruise line. With the KD acquisition came more docks, meaning that the line was able to offer a large number of convenient European docks for its passengers.

2004 saw expansion into China with Yangtze river cruises and cruise tours which took in such key Far East cities as Shanghai and Beijing, closely followed by Southeast Asia and a range of Mekong itineraries.

What’s next for Viking River Cruises? Well, there have been recent reports that the line plans to launch vessels on the Mississippi River but the even bigger news is that Viking River Cruises is to launch an Ocean Cruising division, with its first ocean cruise ship, The Viking Star, set to debut in 2015, operating both Mediterranean and Baltic itineraries.

Designed for discerning, grown-up adventurers who enjoy exploring in style and understated luxury, Viking’s river, ocean and expedition voyages are a world away from the mainstream.

Sailing ‘The Viking Way’ has captured the imaginations of savvy travellers worldwide. But what exactly does this mean? It might be easier to define what it is not. Viking ships do not accommodate under-18s; there are no kids’ clubs, casinos, art auctions, inside staterooms, formal nights, charges for WiFi, charges for wine and beer served with meals, entrance fees for the fabulous spa on ocean ships or waiting in lines. There are no glitzy shows or white-gloved waiters hovering in the dining room – the emphasis is firmly on cultural exploration and destination immersion.

Viking’s 70-plus river ships – many of them the line’s distinctive longships – traverse the major waterways of Europe, Asia, Africa and the US. The ocean fleet, which launched in 2015, features 10 award-winning, all-balcony ships that accommodate a maximum of 998 guests, sailing to every corner of the globe. Eight more Viking ocean ships will set sail between 2024 and 2029. Two state-of-the-art, 378-pax expedition ships – Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis – will explore the polar regions, including incredible ‘Longitudinal World Cruises’ between the Arctic and Antarctica. They’ll also head into the further reaches of North and South America.

All Viking ships share an elegant, Scandinavian design sensibility. Onboard enrichment, whether expert lectures, artwork and libraries, or scientific facilities on the expedition ships, complement onshore experiences. It’s why Viking call themselves ‘The Thinking Person’s Cruise Line’.

Here are eight incredible Viking journeys to inspire the next adventure of the culturally curious traveller.

Explore the world in adventurous luxury.

The wonders of Ancient Egypt – near-mythical temples, tombs and vast pyramids – have fascinated travellers for centuries. Three days in Cairo, where the Pharoahs & Pyramids voyage of discovery begins and ends, allow time to take in the world’s oldest pyramid (the Sakkara Step Pyramid) and Giza’s monumental Great Pyramids and Great Sphinx. The Cairo Citadel and Museum of Egyptian Antiquities are must-visits; shopaholics and history buffs alike can spend hours browsing the vibrant Khan el-Khalili Market.

The living history lessons continue as you cruise the Nile from Luxor to Esna, Qena, Aswan and Edfu, accompanied by Viking’s expert Egyptologists. Among innumerable highlights, you’ll have privileged access to Queen Nefertiti’s tomb, explore the Temple of Karnak, sail on a traditional felucca and meet a traditional Nubian family.

Step into the awe-inspiring Temple of Rameses.

Valletta, Malta’s capital, is one of the most beautiful harbour cities you can sail into. Built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, its imposing fortified walls surround a collection of UNESCO World Heritage-listed palaces, churches, gardens and medieval streets.

Viking’s Malta, Morocco & Mediterranean voyage spends two days in Valletta, where expert-led tours take you even further back in time. Dating back more than 5,000 years, the Hagar Qim temple is older than the Egyptian pyramids; you’ll also have privileged access to the nearby Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an astonishing underground tomb complex.

Maybe the 18th century is more your style? Take a guided tour of Palazzo Parisio and marvel at its grand rooms, opulent décor and formal gardens.

Catch the stunning sight of the Cathedral of Saint Paul as you enter Valletta.

Seeing the mystical Northern Lights dance across an Arctic sky is an experience you’ll never forget, and Norway’s far north is one of the best places to see them. Although its scenic fjords and rugged coastline attract thousands of visitors in the summer, the country is an uncrowded, snow-clad wonderland in winter.

Between January and March, In Search of the Northern Lights offers endless opportunities for adventure. Think dog sledding, snowmobile rides, snowshoe hikes, sea kayaking and helicopter flightseeing, to name a few.

Meeting a reindeer-herding family in a small village offers an eye-opening glimpse into indigenous Sami culture. These hospitable people will take you on a reindeer-sled ride and invite you to lunch in a traditional lavvu tent afterwards, to share their stories.

While many European countries struggle to deal with overtourism, Romania’s treasures are relatively unheralded. Viking’s Passage to Eastern Europe on the Danube offers an illuminating introduction to Bucharest, a city reminiscent of Paris – spacious boulevards and parks, elegant Art Nouveau apartment buildings, cool cafes and upscale restaurants – even an Arc de Triomphe lookalike.

Grandiose Communist-era buildings, such as the massive Palace of Parliament, are as much a part of Romania’s convoluted past as the humble rural dwellings brought from all over the country to reside in the fascinating Village Museum.

As your ship sails westwards along the Danube, you’ll traverse the dramatic Iron Gate Gorges between Romania and Serbia, site of the famous 55-metre high sculpture of Dacian king Decebalus – and be amazed all over again by the intricacies of Balkan history.

Discover Bucharest’s vibrant streets and historic charm as you explore Romania’s capital.

5. Portugal

Two days in Portugal’s vibrant capital, Lisbon, precede a memorable voyage on the Douro River that sets sail on an eight-day round-trip from the lovely old city of Porto. Porto’s wealth was built on Portugal’s port wine business, which was established in the 17th century. Today, you can join guided tours of historic cellars in the Vila Nova de Gaia district to sample the distinctive fortified wines and discover why Douro is known as the ‘River of Gold’.

You’ll be further immersed in the world of viticulture with visits to the charming riverside towns of Régua, Pinhão and Barca d’Alva, where you can have lunch – washed down with Portugal’s ‘young’ Vinho Verde wines – in a beautifully restored railway house one day and in the shadow of a medieval castle the next.

6. Antarctica

An expedition voyage to Antarctica tops many a traveller’s bucket list. It’s the ultimate adventure, a voyage of discovery that takes you to one of the world’s remotest wildernesses – and you can experience it all in comfort and style onboard one of Viking’s two industry-leading expedition vessels.

Purpose-built for the polar regions and launched in 2022, the 378-guest Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are each equipped with two seven-person submarines, 17 zodiacs, two 12-seat convertible Special Operations Boats and sea kayaks, ensuring guests can get right up close to the White Continent’s magnificent scenery and wildlife.

The 13-day Antarctic Explorer voyage operates between November and February and starts with a night in Buenos Aires before departing Ushuaia for the Drake Passage crossing and the magnificent Antarctic Peninsula.

Set sail to Antarctica and marvel at its pristine icy wilderness.

7. Greenland

It’s the world’s biggest island – not a continent like Australia – and not very green because much of it is within the Arctic Circle. Nuuk, where the expedition voyage Into the Northwest Passage starts, lies about 240 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, at the mouth of the 160-kilometre Nuup Kangerlua fjord.

A visit to the little capital city’s Katuaq Cultural Center provides an excellent introduction to Greenland’s Inuit heritage, while kayaking and boat tours on the fjord frequently offer dramatic sightings of whales and other marine life.

Another highlight of the five ports of call in Greenland is Ilulissat, UNESCO World Heritage listed for the natural beauty and scientific significance of its Ilulissat ice fjord. It’s a photographer’s dream: in summer, colourful wooden houses and carpets of wildflowers are set against a dazzling snowy backdrop.

Stroll through Greenland and marvel at the vibrant hues of its charming, colourful houses.

8. Svalbard/Iceland

Viking’s 15-day Iceland & Norway’s Arctic Explorer departs from cosmopolitan Bergen and traces Norway’s rugged coastline north to the distant shores of the Svalbard archipelago, before heading south to Iceland.

It’s a bucket-list voyage to the lands of the midnight sun, featuring a wealth of natural attractions and Arctic wonders – Geiranger Fjord, Tromsø and the remote North Cape, just to name a few.

Two days in Longyearbyen, the capital of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, offer everything the adventurous traveller could desire. There are ATV tours and dogsledding wagon rides, a visit to a summer husky camp, a thrilling water safari to observe basking walrus and nesting seabirds and sea-kayaking on spectacular Sassenfjord.

You can even go down a coal mine to learn firsthand about the region’s industrial heritage, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Isn’t that what culturally curious travel is all about?

April 30th, 2024 at 6:37 PM EDT

Wednesday's IPO will value Viking, an operator of luxury river and ocean cruises, at roughly $10 billion. Leaders in the luxury travel sector will be eyeing the move closely.

Sean O'Neill

Viking , an operator of river and ocean cruises, and a group of shareholders were set to raise more than $1.54 billion in an initial public offering on Wednesday.

When the stock begins trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VIK , the Bermuda-based luxury travel company anticipates that the price per share will be $24.

The company and its shareholders will offer 53 million shares . The IPO placed a roughly $10.3 billion valuation on the company on a fully distributed basis as of the opening bell.

is viking cruise line a russian company

10 Facts About Viking’s IPO and Strategy

  • The IPO will enrich chairman, CEO, and co-founder Torstein “Tor” Hagen, 81, who will control a slim majority of Viking shares. The public debut will make Hagen worth roughly $5 billion , according to Bloomberg estimates.
  • Hagen began Viking in 1997 with four river ships. Today, the company sails 80 river vessels, averaging 190 passengers each. It also has nine ocean-sailing ships, which typically hold about 900 passengers, making them relatively smaller than traditional ocean vessels. The company has three other vessels, such as those used to cruise the Nile in Egypt.
  • Viking wasn’t profitable last year. It reported a $1.86 billion loss in its 2023 fiscal year. But it said that was related to one-time losses. The company reported about $1.09 billion in adjusted EBITDA in its SEC filings.
  • The company targets well-off travelers, typically those above age 55. Its average revenue per passenger last year was $7,251.
  • The company stands apart from traditional ocean cruise lines. There aren’t water slides or casinos on board. Small children are often banned.
  • The company claims it served one out of four luxury cruise-goers on ocean cruises last year out of a market of about 1.1 million. Competitor brands include Oceania, Silversea, Seabourn, and Regent.
  • The company claims to have served one out of two river cruise travelers last year, out of a market of 700,000 passengers. Rivals include Grand Circle.
  • About 90% of Viking’s guests are from North America. Most of its cruise ship itineraries are in Europe and Antarctica, but it has routes worldwide.
  • Viking said it may use some of the capital from the IPO to help expand its offerings to land-based tours and excursions. It will also use some of the capital to pay down its debt, which was $5.4 billion in December.
  • Viking has 24 new ships on order, with options for 12 more. It plans to enter China and other markets.

All transfers must be in conjunction with a Viking-purchased cruise, cruisetour, land extension or extra hotel nights.

The 3 types of Viking cruise ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Viking is unusual among major cruise lines in that it operates both ocean ships and river ships. Despite this, it has one of the easiest-to-understand fleets.

The vast majority of Viking's river ships — at last count, there were 80 — feature the same design. If you've seen one of them, you've seen them all.

Ditto for the line's ocean ships. Nine of Viking's 11 ocean ships are nearly identical. The two exceptions are the recently unveiled Viking ocean vessels specifically designed for expedition cruising — a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places on hardy vessels that carry their own landing craft.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

As a result, the bulk of Viking's vessels falls into one of just three groups; all the ships in each group sport nearly identical designs.

An introduction to Viking cruise ships

Viking has expanded enormously in recent years with the addition of dozens of new river and ocean ships.

Founded in 1997 with four river vessels, the company operated just 29 ships as recently as 2012. Now, there are more than 90 ships in its fleet.

The vast majority of these ships are river ships — the company's sole focus for its first 18 years in business. The company dominates the market for river cruises aimed at North Americans, accounting for about 50% of all such trips.

Starting in 2015, Viking began rolling out ocean cruise ships, too.

In early 2023, as noted above, Viking had 80 river ships in its fleet — almost all of which have the same basic design. The exceptions are a few vessels that Viking operates on rivers in Egypt and Asia (more on these ships below). The line also recently began offering cruises on the Mississippi River and its tributaries using a new type of vessel.

Viking's ocean ships fall into two distinct groups: a series of 930-passenger traditional ocean ships that began debuting in 2015, and a series of 378-passenger expedition ships that began debuting in 2022.

Unlike most cruise lines, Viking doesn't use the term "classes" to define different sets of ships in its fleet. Instead, it refers to its series of traditional ocean ships as the "Viking ocean ships" and its series of expedition ships as the "Viking expedition ships." We've followed the same breakdown of the line's ocean and river fleet below.

Viking ocean ships

Ships: Viking Saturn (2023), Viking Neptune (2022), Viking Mars (2022), Viking Venus (2021), Viking Jupiter (2019), Viking Orion (2018), Zhao Shang Yi Dun (2017), Viking Sky (2017), Viking Sea (2016) and Viking Star (2015).

Size: 47,800 tons.

is viking cruise line a russian company

For years, Viking only operated river ships, and some cruisers still think of the brand primarily as a river cruise company. However, since 2015, Viking has been rapidly rolling out a series of upscale ocean vessels; these new additions are increasingly dominating the world of higher-end ocean cruising.

As of June 2023, Viking has nine ships sailing the world's oceans, each with a capacity for 930 passengers. That gives Viking 8,370 berths in the upscale ocean cruise market — more than competitors Oceania Cruises and Azamara combined.

The series is far from finished. Six more of the vessels are on order from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for delivery between 2024 and 2028, and the company also has options with Fincantieri for four more of the ships to debut in 2029 and 2030. Assuming they are all built, Viking's ocean division will soon be bigger than Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn and Silversea Cruises combined.

The first thing to know about the ships in this series is that they all are pretty much identical. When sailing on any one of them, you will be hard-pressed to tell what is different.

They're also quite upscale. While Viking doesn't market itself as a luxury line, some still consider it so. The vessels are full of luxury touches, from sumptuous bedding in cabins to heated floors in cabin bathrooms.

Related: The complete guide to Viking cabins and suites

Each of the ships in this series has a stylish, Scandinavian-influenced design that is a Viking trademark, and the cabins are large by cruise ship standards. Even the smallest cabins on each of the vessels have 270 square feet of space — a generous amount. Many cabins are significantly bigger than that, with 14 two-room suites on each of the vessels ranging in size from 757 to 1,448 square feet. Many of these bigger suites offer sweeping views from wrap-around private balconies.

Each of the ships' interior spaces is built around an elegant, three-deck-high atrium filled with comfortable seating areas that have a living room-like feel. Each also has a bar and guest relations desk. At the top of the ships, you'll find two-deck-high, glass-walled lounges that offer stunning views over the bow. Other interior spaces include a fitness center and a stylish spa with a thermal suite area that is open to all passengers at no extra charge (something that is not common on cruise vessels).

Multiple restaurants on board each of the vessels include Italian eatery Manfredi's (named after former Silversea owner Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, a friend of Viking founder Torstein Hagen) and The Chef's Table. The latter features rotating themed menus.

The centerpiece of the top deck of each of the ships is the main pool area, which features a glass magrodome that can close during inclement weather. The main pool area on each of the ships sits next to a lovely, glass-topped lounge with comfortable seating called the Wintergarden, which is home to afternoon tea. A den of serenity, it's one of our favorite places on these vessels.

A secondary pool area with an infinity pool is at the back of each of the ships.

While all of the ships in this series are essentially identical, you will find small differences on a few of them. Most notably, two of the vessels in the series — Viking Orion and Viking Jupiter — have a small planetarium built into the top level of the two-level lounge at their fronts (known as the Explorers' Lounge). Some of the later ships in the series have slightly larger fitness centers and slightly smaller hair salons.

Note that in addition to the nine Viking ocean ships officially in the Viking fleet, a 10th ship from the same series, Zhao Shang Yi Dun, caters exclusively to the China market as part of a joint venture between Viking and a Chinese company. When it debuted in 2017, the ship originally catered to the North American market and was called Viking Sun.

Viking river ships

Ships: Viking Fjorgyn (2022), Viking Kari (2022), Viking Radgrid (2022), Viking Skaga (2022) and more than 60 other Longships built since 2012, as well as additional river vessels.

Size: 4,000 to 5,000 tons.

is viking cruise line a russian company

River ships originally put Viking on the map, and they're still at the core of the brand.

As noted above, the line has 80 river ships in its fleet. The vast majority of them have the same basic design and are known as Longships — a reference to the historic vessels used by Vikings in the Middle Ages.

Unveiled in 2012 and designed specifically to fit into the locks used across many of Europe's rivers, the Longships broke new ground in river ship design in multiple ways.

For starters, they have a configuration that includes some of the largest suites ever for river ships in Europe. They also have a significant number of cabins with balconies — which is made possible by an innovative cabin area layout that offsets main corridors. (In other words, the corridors don't run down the middle of the ship, creating a wider side with space for balconies and a narrower side with cabins turned sideways to also create room for verandas.)

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking's cruise loyalty program

Other innovations include a squared-off bow that allows for eight more cabins than similarly sized ships operated by competitors. Also, quieter engines allow for more cabins at the rear. An enormous amount of groundbreaking engineering went into redesigning the bow areas of the ships, in particular, to enable extra cabins while still leaving room for needed machinery.

As a result of such innovations, the Viking Longships can carry more passengers than similarly sized ships operated by competitors. This has allowed Viking to offer lower prices than other river cruise lines and still bring in a similar amount of revenue per ship — a fact that has contributed greatly to the company's rapid growth.

Like many river ships, each of the Viking Longships has one main restaurant where most passengers eat their meals as well as one main interior lounge with a bar. There's also a secondary, casual dining area at the front of each vessel with indoor and outdoor seating. (The outdoor portion, called the Aquavit Terrace, also serves as a forward-facing outdoor lounge during off hours.) Unlike many river ships, the vessels have no spas or fitness centers.

As is typical for river ships, the top of every Viking Longship is covered with an expansive lounge area. There's also a walking track and an herb garden — the latter used by the kitchen staff to grow herbs used during the preparation of onboard meals.

Most Viking Longships are 443 feet long — the perfect length to fit into the locks on many of Europe's rivers. Viking also built slightly smaller versions of the Longships, measuring 361 feet or 410 feet in length, specifically to sail on rivers where lock sizes or other navigational factors require smaller vessels. The 410-foot-long versions of the vessels, for instance, were specifically built to sail into the heart of Paris on the Seine River.

Related: Fast-growing Viking unveils four new ships for the Seine

While the Longships come in several different lengths, they are essentially identical in their offerings and decor. The only notable difference is that the smaller versions of the ships have fewer cabins and thus hold fewer people. The 443-foot-long versions of the ship are designed for 190 passengers, for example, whereas the 410-foot-long versions of the vessels hold 168 passengers (since they have 11 fewer cabins).

While most Viking river ships are Longships, there are a few exceptions in the Viking river fleet. Viking operates several smaller, purpose-built vessels on the Nile River in Egypt. It also has several older river vessels that predate the Longships and traditionally have operated on rivers in Russia and Ukraine. (For now, river cruise itineraries in both countries are on hold due to the war in Ukraine.)

Viking also recently began sailings on the Mississippi River with a new ship specifically designed for the river and its tributaries.

As of May 2023, Viking had another 14 river ships either under construction or on order via provisional contracts.

Viking expedition ships

Ships: Viking Polaris (2022) and Viking Octantis (2022).

Size: 30,150 tons.

is viking cruise line a russian company

Designed to hold just 378 passengers, the Viking expedition ships are specifically designed to take travelers to the most off-the-beaten-path parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic.

As of now, Viking operates just two ships in the series, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, both of which debuted in 2022 . No more are currently on order.

As is typical for expedition ships, these are tough vessels with reinforced bows that let them bump through ice in polar regions; the ships also have extra tanks for fuel and food.

Each of these vessels has its own landing craft on board to bring people ashore in remote locations, as well as kayaks and even submarines for exploring. (The latter is the hot new thing for expedition ships — upscale cruise brands Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Seabourn have been adding submarines to expedition ships , too.)

Like other expedition ships, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are designed to operate with a large and seasoned "expedition team" that includes biologists, botanists, geologists, glaciologists and ornithologists who lecture regularly.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking ship

Each of the vessels has several new and unusual features, too. Most notable is The Hangar: an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to a 12-seat excursion craft while still in the protected interior of the ship. It's a first for an expedition cruise ship.

In another first for a polar expedition cruise vessel, every cabin has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris are designed to be upscale. Like all Viking's vessels, they boast elegant Scandinavian designs. The restaurants on both vessels include a version of Viking's signature Italian spot, Manfredi's and the Scandinavian-inspired Mamsen's outlet.

Another feature of both ships that will be familiar to regular Viking customers is a top-of-the-ship, glass-walled Explorers' Lounge offering stunning views of passing scenery.

In case you're curious, Viking Octantis is named after Sigma Octantis, the current "south star" that hovers over the South Pole (also known as Polaris Australis). Polaris is named after the current "north star" that hovers over the North Pole. The names are a nod to the polar regions where these expedition ships will likely spend much of their time.

Bottom line

Viking operates more cruise vessels than any other major cruise company catering to North Americans. This is in part because it's involved in both the ocean cruise and river cruise businesses. Despite its large size, its fleet of vessels is relatively easy to understand. The vast majority of both its ocean ships and river ships are almost identical in their designs.

Port Sault Ste Marie cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Sault Ste Marie, Soo Locks, Michigan-Ontario Canada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Sault Ste Marie (Soo Saint Marie) is a port city in Ontario (southeast-central Canada), with population around 80,000. It is located on St Marys River, and close to the border with the USA. The settlement was established in the late-17th century by French Jesuit missionaries. Later, it was developed as a fur trading post. With the same name is the small town in Michigan (USA), located to the south (across the river). Before 1812, these communities were one town.

Cargo shipping traffic in the Great Lakes (world's busiest by tonnage inland waterway) bypasses the river's rapids via Sault Locks (Soo Locks). Smaller ships and pleasure boats use the Sault Ste Marie Canal (National Historic Site managed by Parks Canada). This canal has one lock bypassing the river's rapids. St Marys River rapids and cascades descend over 6 m (20 ft) from Lake Superior to the lower lakes. In 1962 was inaugurated Sault Ste Marie International Bridge (toll bridge) connecting both towns. The bridge connects I-75 Highway (Michigan) with Huron Street Highway (Ontario).

The city's economy is largely based on the steel-making industry, with largest single employer Essar Steel Algoma Inc (1902-founded, since 2007 part of Essar Group India). Other major industries are outsourcing (two call centers - Sutherland Global Services, and Agero), gambling (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation's OLG Casino Sault Ste Marie), alternative energy (68 MW solar park, wind farms), forestry, melamine production, furniture manufacturing, tourism.

The city's main tourist attractions are the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, boat tours (via Sault Locks / Soo Locks) to Lake Superior and lower Great Lakes, Whitefish Island, Ermatinger-Clergue historic site, OLG Casino, Algoma Art Gallery, Agawa Canyon Tour Train, MS Norgoma (museum ship), nature parks (Pancake Bay, Batchawana Bay, Lake Superior), Bon Soo Winter Carnival (annual event), Searchmont Resort (ski-snowboard destination), Stokely Creek Lodge (ski resort), Hiawatha (ski trails). A new HUB trail (length 20 km / 12 mi) allows walkers and cyclists (cross skiers in the winter) to enjoy circle touring around the city. Station Mall is one of Northern Ontario's largest shopping malls.

The city is served by Highway 17 (part of Trans-Canada Highway) connecting to Thunder Bay (northwest) and Sudbury (east). In the USA, highway I75 continues south to Detroit MI then crosses into Ohio and terminates in Florida (near Miami ). River shipping transportation is a major link to the USA via the locks in Michigan into St Lawrence Seaway . The international Sault Ste Marie Airport is approx 15 km (9 mi) southwest of the town. Algoma Central Railway runs north from the town.

For season 2019, Roberta Bondar Marina had booked 4 ship calls - two by Le Champlain (2018-built superyacht owned by Ponant ), Victory 1 (2001, AQV ) and Pearl Mist (2014, Pearl Seas Cruises).

The post-COVID 2022 was the most successful year ever for cruises on the Great Lakes. The season featured ~150,000 cruise ship tourists (+25% over 2019) served by 9x boats. Currently, the largest by capacity Great Lakes cruise companies are Viking Cruises USA , AQV-American Queen Voyages , Pearl Seas Cruises (ship Pearl Mist ), and the Canadian company St Lawrence Cruise Lines (ship Canadian Empress ). Other travel brands that offer Great Lakes voyages are PONANT and Tauck ( fleet ).

Due to the increased Great Lakes cruise passenger traffic, in 2022 were opened two new US Customs and Border Protection facilities - in Duluth MI and Cleveland OH, in addition to the existing in Detroit MI and Sault Ste Marie MI.

Soo Locks (Lake Superior to lower Great Lakes)

Soo Locks are parallel locks built in 1855 and currently operated and maintained by the USA's Army Corps of Engineers (Detroit District). The waterway connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron and is located on St Mary's River (between Michigan USA and Ontario Canada).

Soo Locks allow safe navigation to large ships by bypassing the river's rapids and waterfalls (with heights up to 21 ft/6,5 m). The locks' average annual traffic is ~10,000 vessels. The waterway is effectively closed in January-March each year due to ice that shuts down the Great Lakes' shipping operations.

The Sault Ste Marie Bridge (ver St. Marys River) connects two same-named cities (Sault Ste. Marie) in Michigan and Ontario. The bridge was opened in 1962 and serves vehicles passing over the Soo Locks. A separate railroad bridge crosses the river just upstream. Sault Ste Marie Bridge has length 2,8 mi (4,5 km), width 28 ft (8,5 m), clearance/air-draft 124 ft (38 m) and is ranked the 10th-busiest road for USA-Canada border crossing.

The bridge's average daily traffic is 7000 vehicles. Toll rates are USD 4 and CAD 5,3 per vehicle.

Sault Ste Marie cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Sault Ste Marie (Canada) dock near Roberta Bondar Marina. The facility is  part of Roberta Bondar Park and offers 38 slips (for tour boats and yachts), shoreside power supply, water hook-ups.  Additional services for boaters include showers, laundry, fueling, wastewater  pump-out, charting (books), cruisetour guides, various marine products.

Roberta Bondar Marina also serves as Canadian Customs check-in. It is located near downtown (65 Foster Drive) and close to city's main shopping, dining and entertainment venues.
