Kings of Leon reflect on their road to success as they kick off new tour

Kings of Leon, who exploded onto the music scene in 2008 with songs like “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire,” are back with a fresh new sound and a newfound energy.

The rock group, which dropped their ninth album “Can We Please Have Fun” in May, has garnered significant buzz and climbed the Billboard charts again thanks to songs like “Mustang.”

For more on this story watch Top Story with Tom Llamas on NBC News NOW tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT.

“I will say I’ve never felt this good in my life. And I feel like all of us could say that this is the best we’ve ever felt as a band,” lead singer Caleb Followill told NBC News in an exclusive interview from their studio in Nashville, Tennessee. “After success... it just feels like you’re trying to kind of match something or meet people’s expectations. With this album, I feel like we just kind of shed all that and just wanted to make something that excited us and us alone. As selfish as that sounds.”

But the group says that their latest album title isn’t ironic.

When asked if there was a time when they weren’t having fun, Caleb said: “Several times I think before this album ... it felt like things were kind of coming to an end or maybe the inspiration was kind of fizzling out.”

The group, which consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan, Jared and cousin Matthew Followill, said that in the years following their smash hits and mainstream success, they began to lose their initial excitement. It nearly caused them to go their separate ways.

“I think there have been times when we’ve all felt amongst ourselves like, ‘Yeah, this isn’t as fun as it once was, and it feels like work,’” Caleb said.

But after the death of their mom, Betty-Ann, in 2021, the group began to find their spark again.

“I do believe that her passing was the key to us finding that inspiration. So all of this is because of that,” Caleb said.

And for the band, a new beginning also meant leaving their longtime record label RCA and moving over to Capitol Records.

“Just getting rid of some of that kind of corporate feel, which, you know, they were always good to us,” Jared said. “It was not a bad relationship whatsoever, but just being able to do it ourselves. ... It felt like an indie record, and that’s when we had fun.”

Kings of Leon made a name for themselves in their early days with their songs that oozed sex appeal and were rooted in their rock ’n’ roll lifestyle. But a lot has changed since then. These guys now are proud dads with a combined nine kids between them.

“It’s great. It’s an added layer to tour life,” Nathan said. “As far as another thing we have in common that we can kind of commiserate with, or, you know, sit there and be sad that we’re missing them.”

Instead of pulling all-nighters, Jared laughed, “We like to party until the sun goes down.”

Their kids even at times inspiring songs on their new album, like in the lyrics of “Mustang”: “There’s a Mustang in the city / And it’s calling me out / Are you a Mustang or a kitty?”

“It would be like, what are they wearing? It’s like, ‘Oh, he’s wearing a Mustang T-shirt. Okay, I’m gonna sing about a Mustang,’” Caleb explained. “She’s watching a video about cats. I’m gonna compare a Mustang to a kitty, you know?’”

For these guys, who kicked off their North American tour last month, it’s always been about family. They began dabbling in music when they were on the road with their parents, as their dad, a traveling preacher, took them to small Southern towns.

“Everything about our childhood is the reason that we’re here,” Caleb said. “The fact that we grew up in a car, as opposed to a house. The fact that we had windows instead of television, you know? We were sponges soaking it all in, even if we didn’t realize it. We didn’t have the latest games and toys. So we had to make up our own things ... it formed us to be creative."

It was through performing in churches that they realized maybe music could be more than just a hobby.

“I don’t know if anybody knew what to expect ... they were almost just like, ‘Go do it,’ ‘Go see what happens,’ and ‘We’ll be here when it, you know, maybe, probably doesn’t work.’ But yeah, our mom and dad were both just kind of cautiously optimistic,” Jared said.

The Followill family bonds run deep. The boys named their band after their late grandfather Leon.

“He was the biggest fan,” Caleb said. “Whenever we were coming up with band names, something with kings popped up. And then when ‘Kings of Leon,’ when that was said, we realized that it was something that was going to tie us all together because he’s all of our grandfather.” The singer and guitarist added: “He was very proud. And it’s a great, great feeling when you can make your grandparents proud.”

As they cross the country again, this time hitting stages in cities like New York, Austin, Texas, and their hometown, Nashville, they realize that putting on a show for fans is more important than ever because these days going to a concert isn’t cheap. According to Pollstar, the average ticket price for top tours this year hit a record $123. Something the guys say gives them even more of a reason to provide their fans with a show they’ll remember.

“It can’t just be something they’ve seen before,” Caleb said. “So for us, in every aspect of what we do, we have stepped it up ... Otherwise, we kind of look around [and] it’s like the conveyor belt.”

Ways they are spicing up their tour is by debuting an exclusive song in each city and adding visuals to their music on stage.

As they reflect on their 20-year journey, they’re just grateful to be making music and, of course, having fun.

“Fun looks like all this ... what we’re doing,” Matthew said. “You know, it’s not lost on us how lucky we are and what we do. We’re just so lucky to still be here doing it.”

Kings of Leon announce world tour and new album 'Can We Please Have Fun'

On tour - buy tickets now, featured on tour, latest news.

“Your band cannot stand you. You have got to get your self together!” Inside the tour that almost destroyed Kings of Leon

On their upcoming ninth album Can We Please Have Fun, Kings Of Leon say that they're more fulfilled than ever. But things weren’t always so peachy for the Nashville clan

Kings of Leon, 2010

From their early days, Kings of Leon - brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill, along with their cousin Matthew Followill - bore all the hallmarks of a classic rock ’n’ roll band. They emerged from Nashville seemingly fully formed, with old school riffs, the good looks and retro fashion style of Almost Famous ' fictional rockers Stillwater, and an almost too-cinematic-to-be-true back story, the brothers hailing from a fire-and-brimstone background, their father being a disgraced Pentecostal preacher. After the release of their 2003 debut album Youth and Young Manhood , the good times rolled for the Kings. Britain fell particularly hard for their distinctive style, which sounded like the Allman Brothers getting pissed up in the kitchen at the Strokes’ house party, and it wasn’t until fourth record, Only By the Night , that there appeared to be anything amiss. It’s been reported that Caleb wrote some of the 2008 record under the influence of pain medication after a fracas with Nathan, and the album certainly seemed to explore darker territory than its predecessors. Take the gothic opening track Closer , which sees Caleb emerge from a fog of electrical bleeps to announce himself “stranded in this spooky town…” The whole record is eerie and melancholic – which didn’t stop it from shifting more than six million copies and thrusting them into European enormodomes. Those doors were opened by Sex on Fire , the album's horny lead single, a huge radio hit that the group would later dismiss as “piece of shit”, which would stoke inter-band tensions, familial rivalries and a descent into debauchery that threatened to destroy them completely.

Early warning signs arrived with the quartet's lacklustre performance headlining Reading Festival in 2009, and a muted crowd response which clearly irked the band. “I'm trying to hold back and not say anything negative man,” Caleb muttered ahead of playing Sex On Fire . “Hope it warms up out here, because we need it, we need you guys to help us do this, y'know.” When the Reading crowd roared along in recognition of the band's best-known song, Caleb could be seen shaking his head in annoyance. After the show, Nathan tweeted: “Reading? What the fuck? Zero love for the kings. I know it was cold but holy shit, y’all were frozen.” The scrappy lads from Tennessee were beginning to look like entitled rock stars. One year on, talking to NME , Caleb acknowledged “at the end of the day it was probably our fault. Because of the success I expected everyone to [cheer] for everything we did.” “That was my Kurt Cobain moment when I was hating the success and I was scared that people were thinking that we did this on purpose, that we made this record so that it could be big.”

By the time Kings Of Leon hit the road for muscular follow-up album Come Around Sundown , the wheels were well and truly coming off. They’d always fought – three of them were brothers, after all – and there’d always been debauchery, but success put perilous distance between them: they began to travel in separate cars and would only meeting up an hour-and-a-half before each show. These chasms between were soon filled with resentment and miscommunication, which wasn’t helped by booze and the steroid injections that keep Caleb’s voice sounding suitably rough and raw.  In the band-approved documentary Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon , Nathan barks at the frontman: "You get so fucking drunk and talk shit. Your band cannot stand you. You have got to get your fucking self together. We have made you, you piece of shit!" During this period, the band fought over “the stupidest shit,” Jared later admitted to NME . “It would literally be over a seat at the bar. You’re just looking for a reason to fight.”   Things didn’t get much better onstage. In the most famous incident from this troubling era, the Kings abandoned a show in St Louis, Missouri because – as later Nathan later tweeted, apparently without blushing – “pigeons [were] shitting in Jared‘s mouth and it was too unsanitary to continue”. True: this wasn’t their fault, but the bizarre communication pointed to a serious lack of self-awareness in the Kings’ camp.   It was in Dallas, Texas, that the clan’s issues came to a head. On July 29, 2011, at the Gexa Energy Pavilion, Caleb rambled between songs and announced before what would have been the encore: “I’m gonna go backstage for a second. I’m gonna vomit, I’m gonna drink a beer and I’m gonna come back out and I’m gonna play three more songs…” He didn’t return to the stage that night, leaving poor Jared to plead with the baying crowd: “I know you guys fuckin’ hate us… Fuckin’ hate Caleb, don’t hate us.” The band officially attributed the incident to dehydration and the Texan heat, though Jared later tweeted: “I can't lie. There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade. There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed.”

The tour had two months left to run, but was cancelled in the aftermath of Caleb’s meltdown. The quartet reconvened in a Nashville steakhouse a few days after the gig; the frontman later claimed that he didn’t drink alcohol for nine months in the wake of the meeting. Since then, the band have spoken candidly about the growing pains they experienced at the start of the last decade, as well as the work they’ve put in to nurture their relationships.  “[Dallas] changed the way we do things,” Caleb revealed to NME , adding: “[We] understand that what we’re doing is great and we’re excited about it, but if you overwork yourself you overwork yourself.” It’s clearly been effective. In a statement that accompanied the announcement of the band's forthcoming album Can We Please Have Fun , set for release on May 10, Nathan sztated “this is probably the best place we’ve ever been in band-wise”, while Caleb reflected: “When you have a band, there’s a bond like no other, and when you have family, you have a bond like no other. We have both of those things.” Kings of Leon’s make-or-break point was now almost half their album discography ago. Since then they’ve discovered their mojo, released the return-to-form single Mustang and, crucially, learned to communicate without knocking lumps out of each other. We’ll raise a Gatorade to that.

Earlier this year, Kings of Leon released their innovative eighth studio album When You See Yourself , marking the first time ever that a new album was released as an NFT. In a first of it’s kind launch, the innovative album release made waves through the music industry, quickly becoming one of the most successful wide-scale use of NFTs within the music industry to date.   In the history making drop, the band made available six GOLDEN TICKET experiences, offering fans four front row seats, each tour, to the show of their choosing, anywhere in the world, FOR LIFE.  NFT YOURSELF album token holders were also able to redeem “Going Nowhere” (an acoustic version of the album track ‘Supermarket’). The previously unreleased version of the track is being given as a token of appreciation to everyone who was willing to invest in the future of music, during a year of uncertain futures. As Kings of Leon continue exploring ways to connect directly with their fans, NFT YOURSELF will be the gift that keeps on giving.

The drop has raked in 1k Ethereum, which at today’s valued exchange rate, is approximately 3.7 million dollars. $600,000 of that has gone to directly benefit Live Nation’s Crew Nation. Echoing this sentiment on tour, the band will continue to give back to their musical community with one dollar from every ticket going directly to their newly formed Inherit The Music foundation.

Inherit The Music is embarking on a campaign to inspire the next generation of musicians. Co-founded by Kings of Leon and philanthropist Alisha Ballard, Inherit The Music supports local organizations that pay forward the gifts that only music can provide. By providing resources and funding education programs at all age levels, this newly formed charitable organization aims to impact the aspiring musicians of today and the future.

Kings of Leon’s latest album, When You See Yourself , was recorded at Nashville’s famed Blackbird Studios and produced by Grammy Award-winning Markus Dravs. The album has received critical acclaim with  Rolling Stone Magazine  noting “…the band’s eighth album is an arena rock of the mind,” that “lunges and soars with rippling guitar leads cascading across some of the dirtiest riffs the band has put on a record since the New South-meets-neo-Strokes garage moves of its first two albums… this record might surprise you.”

Kings of Leon’s latest album, When You See Yourself, was recorded at Nashville’s famed Blackbird Studios and produced by Grammy Award-winning Markus Dravs.
