Visit to Australia by Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with the Governor-General Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, will welcome Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla to Australia in October this year.

This will be The King’s first visit to Australia as Sovereign.

The King shares a long history with and affection for Australia, having previously made 15 official visits to our nation and having visited every state and territory.

During this visit, The King and Queen will travel to the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales.

Official Australian portraits of The King and Queen have now been released and can be downloaded from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website.

In the official portraits, The King wears The Sovereign’s Badge of the Order of Australia, while The Queen wears the Wattle Brooch which was gifted to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Australia in 1954.

Australians can request printed versions of the portraits through their Federal Member of the House of Representatives or Senator in their state or territory.

Planning is currently underway for the Royal Visit, and more information will be provided in due course.

Quotes attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:

“I am honoured to welcome The King and Queen on their first Royal Visit to Australia later this year, they are always welcome visitors. “The King has a deep regard for our great nation, and has always spoken warmly of the time he has spent here and the astounding beauty of our extraordinary continent. “I look forward welcoming The King and Queen back to Australia for this important visit.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla's Australian tour: Where to see them

  • King Charles and Queen Camilla are touring Australia
  • Where they'll go on action-packed five days
  • Highly anticipated and emotional visit

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will travel to Sydney  and Canberra next month for an activity-packed five-day trip.

Having last visited as the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in 2018,  the King and Queen will visit Australia from October 18-22 in the first tour by a British royal since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 .

It is expected to be a particularly emotional visit for His Majesty. It will be his first as Sovereign following his accession to the throne, and the first opportunity for the Australian public to see him in person since his mother's death.

It will be the first visit to Australia by a reigning monarch since 2011, when Queen Elizabeth II last toured Australia, and the 17th official royal visit by Charles.

The 75-year-old King, whose environmental consciousness as prince is well known, will include discussions about climate change and the Australian environment during this tour.

Due to his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Charles has been forced to curtail the visit, cutting out a tour to New Zealand, and instead ending it by travelling to Samoa for a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Charles, who last visited in 2018 with Camilla to open the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, first came to Australia in 1966 as a 17-year-old.

He spent two terms at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria's Timbertop campus and has since expressed a deep affection for Australia.

His sons and their wives have visited, with Prince William and Kate's 2014 tour including a trip to Uluru, which drew comparisons to Charles and Princess Diana's iconic tour of the sacred site in 1983.

Prince Harry and Meghan visited Australia in 2018, announcing while they were here their pregnancy with baby Archie, staying 16 days.

SYDNEY

Charles and Camilla will touch down on October 18 to be greeted in an official welcome by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with the Governor-General Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC.

While in Sydney the King and Queen are expected to stay at Admiralty House, the official Sydney residence of the governor-general located in Kirribilli, with spectacular views over Sydney Harbour.

Royal aides have calibrated the King's diary while here to 'protect and prioritise' his health and recovery, including fewer evening engagements and a 'rest day' on his arrival

After landing, the royal couple will be conduct a fleet review of Royal Australian Navy ships on the harbour.

They will also enjoy a community barbecue attended by guests including Indigenous Australians and others representing the nation's cultural diversity .

The King will discuss cancer research with 2024 Australians of the Year, Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer, while meeting with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives.

The Queen will meet with children participating in a Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition workshop during a library visit in Sydney.

Space has been publicly left on the itinerary in Sydney for yet-to-be-announced 'surprises'.

In Canberra King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Parliament House, where they will attend a reception to meet Australian political, sporting, arts and community leaders.

The royal couple will then take part in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial and visit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander memorial, 'For Our Country'.

The following day, they will tour the Australian National Botanic Gardens on Black Mountain, in the ACT, to meet with staff and volunteers to discuss the global impacts of climate change .

They will also visit CSIRO Headquarters next door, with the monarch due to speak with scientists researching the impact of bushfires, and the resilience of the environment to bounce back from devastation.

Queen Camilla will meet family and domestic violence advocates and representatives from the poverty charity GIVIT, which helps distribute donations across a range of organisations.

On the late Queen Elizabeth's last visit in 2011, her sixteenth to Australia, she stayed 10 days and toured Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

The King will meet leading cancer doctors and attend a community barbeque with the Queen on their forthcoming historic visit to Australia, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Charles and Camilla will travel Down Under and later undertake a state visit to Samoa from Friday 18 to Saturday 26 October.

It will be His Majesty's first visit to Australia as monarch, while the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa will be the first the King attends as Head of the Commonwealth.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "In both countries, Their Majesties' engagements will focus on themes designed to celebrate the best of Australia and Samoa, as well as reflecting aspects of The King and Queen's work."

In Australia, Charles, who is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, will meet Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer to hear about the work they do to help those affected by melanoma, one of Australia's most common cancers.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said of the tour:  "There had been some hope earlier in the year for Their Majesties to be able to visit New Zealand. On doctor’s advice, and in close consultation with the Australian and New Zealand governments, that wasn't able to take place.

’‘We've had to make some difficult decisions about the programme with the Australian government,  about where Their Majesties can get to."

Why Charles might soon be the first ever King to visit Australia

  • Wednesday 19 October 2022 at 1:28pm

Royal Editor

King Charles pictured at a Royal engagement.

A Royal tour is being planned in Australia to coincide with celebrations for the country’s first parliament.

It’s been earmarked for October 2024 and should the tour be conducted by King Charles and the Queen Consort, it would be the first time a reigning King has ever stepped foot on Australian soil.

The claim has been made in a programme of events released by New South Wales Legislative Council, which said a “much-anticipated Royal visit in 2024” promises to be “a highlight”.

Buckingham Palace won’t be drawn on the plans and is still in the process of working out which senior royals will go where in the coming months and years.

The itinerary is having to be redrawn following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Whilst the late Queen went to Australia many times as Monarch, none of her male predecessors managed to get to the country.

Her father King George VI did visit in 1926, but when he was the Duke of York.

And her uncle, Edward VIII, visited Australia in 1920 when he was the Prince of Wales.

Meanwhile, her grandfather toured the country in 1901 when he was the Heir to the Throne, after his father had to cancel following the death of Queen Victoria.

Queen Elizabeth II first visited as Queen of Australia in 1954 and called the New South Wales Parliament “Australia’s ‘Mother Parliament’”.

Unveiling the plans for its Bicentenary, the President of the NSW Legislative Council, Matthew Mason-Cox, called the establishment of the parliament “Australia’s magical Magna Carta moment” and said the celebrations would include “a much-anticipated Royal tour in 2024”.

But many are hoping the new Prince and Princess of Wales will make it to Australia before then.

Prior to the Covid pandemic, it was thought William and Kate were planning to visit, following a series of devastating wildfires across Australia in 2019.

Asked by ITV News recently about a possible royal visit, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there had been “some preliminary discussions about the now Prince and Princess of Wales visiting Australia".

Mr Albanese, who wants to replace the King as head of state and transition to a republic , said William and Kate were welcome to bring their children, even though Prince George had been dubbed the “republican slayer” when he came to Australia with his mum and dad in 2014.

Listen to the ITV News Royal Rota podcast

Despite wanting to become a republic, Mr Albanese is unlikely to call a referendum on the issue before Australia’s next general election.

Asked about the issue following the death of the Queen, the prime minister said it was "a discussion for another time".

The NSW Parliament was formed in 1823 and held its first session in 1824.

Margaret Beasley, the Governor of New South Wales, said the Bicentenary was a moment for Australia to celebrate “its role in our parliamentary democracy”.

And Australia is expecting a senior member of the Royal Family to help them mark the evolution of democracy in the country throughout the last two hundred years.

Prince William and Kate's visit to Australia: Anthony Albanese confirms 'preliminary discussions' about couple's trip Down Under

Anthony Albanese has confirmed "preliminary discussions" are underway about a visit to Australia by the now Prince and Princess of Wales.

Bryant Hevesi

Prince William and Kate Middleton could be visiting Australia in the near future, with talks underway about a potential trip Down Under.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed "preliminary discussions" have taken place about the visit, which would be the couple's first trip to Australia in almost a decade.

The Prince and Princess last visited in April 2014 with first born son Prince George, who was nine-months-old at the time.

"There have been some preliminary discussions about the now Prince and Princess of Wales visiting Australia," Mr Albanese told ITV.

"And of course the Royal Family have always been welcome visitors here in Australia and they would be again."

Mr Albanese said he was hopeful the couple would also bring their three children - Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four - with them to Australia.

"I would hope that if they visit they bring their children with them," he said.

But a potential visit by King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, is not yet on the cards.

When asked whether the new monarch and his wife would be visiting Australia next year or in 2024, Mr Albanese said: "We haven't had those discussions".

The Prime Minister is on his way to London, where he will attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on Monday.

"It is an extraordinary occasion in commemorating a life well-lived, but a sad occasion. But also a celebration of Queen Elizabeth's contribution to Australia and to the Commonwealth," Mr Albanese told 6PR.

"The longest ever serving British monarch, the second-longest serving monarch anywhere in the world in in human history. It's quite an extraordinary achievement."

He will also have meetings with the King, the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss and Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau while in the United Kingdom.

Prince William and Kate in early talks to tour Australia next year, Prime Minister says

Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, may be packing their bags for a visit to Australia next year, the first royal visit since the Queen's death, the Prime Minister has hinted.

Key points:

  • The Prince and Princess of Wales have had early discussions to tour Australia next year
  • The pair last visited in 2014
  • A planned visit in 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19

Responding to rumours of a royal visit, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the British media outlet ITV there had been early talks of a visit by the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

"There have  been some preliminary discussions about the now Prince and Princess of Wales visiting Australia," he said.

"And, of course, the royal family have always been welcome visitors here in Australia and they would be again."

Mr Albanese said there had been no discussions of King Charles III visiting, but he has previously said the sovereign has a "standing invitation".

If the prince and princess toured Australia next year it would be their first visit since 2014 with a then-baby George.

The family had planned to come to Australia in 2020 but the visit was cancelled following the onset of the pandemic.

Mr Albanese said he hoped that if the couple visited "they bring their children with them", despite jokes of Prince George being a "republican slayer" when the family last toured.

The last visit to Australia by a royal was by Anne, the Princess Royal, in April 2022.

King Charles III last travelled to Australia in 2018.

2024 Royal Visit

Royal Visit to Australia by His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla.

Their Majesties will visit Australia from 18 to 23 October 2024. This will be The King’s first visit to Australia as Sovereign.

The King and Queen will travel to the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales as part of this visit. Buckingham Palace has announced details of the program.

Details about where to see The King and Queen will be released closer to the visit.

The King’s Previous Visits to Australia

King Charles III has visited Australia 16 times. In 1966 at age 17, His Majesty completed two terms as an exchange student at Timbertop, Geelong Grammar School in Victoria. His Majesty’s most recent visit occurred in 2018, when he opened the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen’s Previous Visits to Australia

Queen Camilla has visited Australia three times between 2012 and 2018. In 2012, as The Duchess of Cornwall, Queen Camilla visited Australia as Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II’s personal representative as part of the Diamond Jubilee year celebrations. In 2018, Queen Camilla returned to Australia alongside King Charles as a representative of Queen Elizabeth II to open the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

King Charles and Queen Camilla Will Visit Australia and Samoa in October

The King is not visiting New Zealand as his doctors have advised against an extended program.

the prince of wales and duchess of cornwall visit australia day 3

When King Charles announced back in February that he has cancer , it meant that overseas travel was naturally off limits for a time. However, the British monarch’s doctors have since cleared him to carry out some overseas visits, and the Palace has now announced that he will travel to Australia and Samoa in the fall.

“Their Majesties The King and Queen will undertake an Autumn Tour in October 2024. This will include Royal Visits to Australia and Samoa, where Their Majesties will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “The King and Queen will visit Australia at the invitation of the Australian Government, where their programme will feature engagements in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. Their Majesties’ State Visit to Samoa will celebrate the strong bilateral relationship between the Pacific Island nation and the U.K.”

prince of wales and duchess of cornwall visit queensland day 2

Usually, the British royals carry out visits to Australia and New Zealand at the same time. King Charles is now head of state in both countries and has not visited either since coming to the throne in 2022. However, the Palace said yesterday that the King’s doctors have advised that an extended program should be avoided “to prioritise His Majesty’s continued recovery.” “In close consultation with the Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers, and with due regard for the pressures of time and logistics, it has therefore been agreed to limit the visit to Samoa and Australia only. Their Majesties send their warmest thanks and good wishes to all parties for their continued support and understanding,” a spokesperson said.

As the King is head of state in Australia , Australian taxpayers will pay for the visit, which is likely to cost tens of thousands of dollars. The republican movement in Australia, which is calling for the country to have an Australian head of state, questioned that the public should pay. “Aussie taxpayers will be slugged with the costs right at the moment they are experiencing incredible cost of living challenges,” National Director and CEO Isaac Jeffrey said. In a statement , he described the royal visit was a “great opportunity for all Australians to ask themselves whether the British Royals really represent a modern Aussie democracy.”

New photographs of Charles and Camilla have been released to mark the visit, one showing them wearing Australian insignia ( above ) and another showing them in New Zealand insignia despite the fact they will not be traveling to New Zealand. They were take by Millie Pilkington this year.
