Live reviews

Dusting off the glittery cobwebs and reconciling past differences in a well-documented ITV series saw the quintet, Steps reunite for the first time in 10 years to start a new chapter for the iconic UK pop band. Overcoming personal issues within and outside the band, Claire, Fay, ‘H’, Lee and Lisa were finally ready in 2011 to move Steps forward.

They taught us to “5,6,7,8” and how to “Stomp” combined with catchy as hell choruses and camp cheesy dance moves, you can expect to find yourself on your feet for an entire show, dancing your socks off. It doesn’t much convincing for the audience to take part, with emphatic crowd sing-a-longs to “Heartbeat” and “Better Best Forgotten”. Taken aback by nostalgia, the audience relive their youth mirroring the dance routines in “One For Sorrow” and “Deeper Shade Of Blue”. It wouldn’t be a Steps show without a medley or two, guaranteeing you’ll definitely hear one of your favourites even if it’s just a snippet. With Claire Richard’s powerful and effortless lead vocals carrying the band it reaffirms Steps’ defining and recognisable sound. Costume changes are imperative for Steps both flamboyant and co-ordinated whether its glittery, leather clad or uniformed, they go certainly go all out. Saving their anthemic cover of the Bee Gees classic “Tragedy” til last, brings out everyone’s best karaoke rendition complete with dance moves. They can be forgiven for using a backing track- it’s part of the package but you know for certain that they’ll churn out an energetic and steptacular live performance. You’re guaranteed to have the time of your life at a Steps show, think Butlins red coats- all smiling, all dancing, all singing, pure cheesy entertainment and that’s exactly what you’ll get!

With them being one of the biggest pop groups of the 90s, Steps definitely have provided kids who were growing up during that time with some everlasting memories. Just wait until “5,6,7,8” drops at a party and watch the room break into the line dance from the video. It was something of a phenomenon at the time.

With a catalogue of pop hits under their belt, a Steps live show is never going to fail to entertain. I saw Steps back in 1999 when they were at the height of their success and I remember back then, every kid in the arena knew the routines and words to every song. Steps really were a pop phenomenon in the UK back then, second only to the Spice Girls, and looking back now, they were deserving of their success.

When Steps announced that they would be reuniting, I can’t lie, I was really excited. I saw them live at the London Palladium back in 2012 and more than a decade on, they still delivered, proving that they really did succeed in creating timeless pop anthems! The nostalgia in the room was clear, as the twenty-something’s in the crowd were taken on a journey back through their childhoods with songs such as “Tragedy”, “One for Sorrow” and “Deeper Shade of Blue”. Their were younger children in the room as well, showing that Steps are still having an impact in this current day, competing with some of the biggest pop stars.

Some may be ashamed to reveal they were Steps fans back in the day, but not me. I still am. Appreciate good pop music for what it is and if you get a chance to see Steps, I really think you should take it!

Steps announce first set of ‘25th Anniversary Tour’ dates

Connor Gotto

Steps have revealed the first set of live dates for their ‘25th Anniversary Tour’.

The group are marking the milestone in 2022 with a series of outdoor summer shows – just months after wrapping the ‘What The Future Holds’ arena trek.

Don't Miss...

Michael medrano is back with latest single tom hardy, troye sivan proves himself to be the ultimate pop star with dazzling wembley arena show.

They revealed: “Next summer, join us to celebrate 25 YEARS OF STEPS… More tour dates to be announced soon…”

Next summer, join us to celebrate 25 YEARS OF STEPS 🤯 More tour dates to be announced soon… 🙌 For ticket info, visit https://t.co/XtnVC6Y7Uc pic.twitter.com/TThFL4RYID — Steps (@OfficialSteps) November 25, 2021

Shows include stops across the UK at events such as Back 2 and Kubix Festivals, along with Carfest North and South and Birmingham Pride.

They’ll be Steps’ first outdoor shows since their 2018 ‘Summer of Steps’ tour.

The group previously admitted they’re keen to perform more festival dates , with Lisa Scott-Lee saying: “We’ve never really done festivals. I’d love to do one so maybe we will get a chance to put on our own [festival]… Who knows!”

On their other plans to celebrate 25 years, the singer added: “There’s plenty in the pipeline that’s new. Big plans are already in place for that. I can’t say that much or I’d get in trouble. [But] it’s nice to keep a bit of mystery, but we like to keep it fun and give back to our fans who have been so loyal over the years.”

Steps announce comeback with new album and tour

New album What The Future Holds will be released in November, with a Steps tour planned for 2021, the band have revealed.

Tuesday 8 September 2020 12:11, UK

British pop group Steps, circa 1998; from left to right Lee Latchford-Evans, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian H Watkins, Faye Tozer, Claire Richards

Five, six, seven, eight - better get in line, as Steps have announced their comeback.

The pop fivesome, famous for hits such as One For Sorrow, Tragedy and Love's Got A Hold On My Heart back in the 1990s, will release a new album later this year and tour at the end of 2021.

"We couldn't keep it a secret any longer!!" a message on the official Steps Twitter account said on Monday evening.

"Our new album What The Future Holds arrives on November 27th, and it's available to pre-order from 8am tomorrow!"

It followed a series of cryptic posts featuring the Steps stars, referencing the past and the future, with one including a crystal ball.

Steps - Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian "H" Watkins - were formed in the 1990s as a pop group with choreographed routines that fans could dance along to.

They released three platinum-selling albums and had two number one singles in the UK before they split up in 2001.

Steps fans have been making their feelings known on the group's setlist for their What The Future Holds tour after opening night on Tuesday.

After tickets went on sale for the nationwide jaunt towards the end of last year, it finally kicked off in Sheffield in front of a captive audience of supporters.

Following a set from special guest Sophie Ellis-Bextor, H, Claire, Faye, Lee and Lisa hit the stage to the strains of their new album and tour's title track.

But, many fans have reacted badly to the fact, that given the band have released two different versions of the What The Future Holds album, only a handful of tracks from each of them.

Scared of the Dark

Reacting to it negatively, one fan tweeted: "The Steps 'What The Future Holds Tour' setlist looks great, but what's the point of releasing 2 albums for this tour, and then only doing 6 songs from them

"A little disappointing when it's supposed to the WTFH tour..."

Equally divided, another commented: "The setlist for Steps is dire. I'm sorry but you've given us two amazing albums and you include like 4 songs from both put together?" and a third tweeted: "Very disappointed with #Setlist of #wtfhtour by @OfficialSteps Why release 2 great albums if you are only going to tour the old hits that we have heard over and over again?"

However, plenty of others are delighted that the Steps setlist is packed with hits, with one thrilled fan writing: "As a fan that hasn't seen the band in 20 years I am extremely happy with the setlist. This is incredible!!"

Also very happy with the songs performed on opening night, a second posted: "gotta give it to steps , the setlist is banger after banger after banger and i really cannot wait to see it myself."

Iconic rock band postpones tour after singer reveals health battle

Lead singer Ann Wilson of the legendary rock band Heart has announced that she has cancer and the band has cancelled the remaining dates on its Royal Flush Tour so she can undergo treatment.

Wilson in a statement Tuesday said that she underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth and is recovering steadily, the Associated Press reported.

She said that her doctors urged her to undergo preventive chemotherapy and take time off from performing “in order to fully recover.”

That meant the rest of the shows on the North American tour will be postponed until 2025.

“To the ticket buyers, I really do wish we could do these gigs,” Wilson said in the statement. “Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025. My team is getting those details sorted & we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can.”

All previously purchased tickets for the postponed shows will be honored. The rescheduled dates will be announced in the coming weeks, according to the release.

“This is merely a pause. I’ve much more to sing,” Wilson continued in the statement before adding, “Respectfully, this is the last public statement l’d like to make on the matter.”

Wilson and her sister, Ann, founded Heart in the 1970s, and hits like “Barracuda,” “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man” and “Alone” have become radio staples. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

More than 50 shows at stadium and arena venues in dozens of cities across the U.S. and Canada are impacted by the postponement, the AP said.

Select shows were set to include performances from iconic bands Def Leppard and Journey. Heart has not announced whether those bands will accompany them at the rescheduled performances.

Heart had canceled the European leg of their tour in May, saying that Wilson had to have “a time-sensitive but routine procedure for which the minimum recovery time is six weeks.”

Doobie Brothers sounded great revisiting iconic songs on 2024 tour in Phoenix

steps band tour

Michael McDonald rejoining the fold just in time for the 50th Anniversary Tour was a big deal for obvious reasons to anyone who grew up in the ‘70s when the Doobie Brothers ruled the airwaves with an endless string of pop hits that continue to define their place in music history.

He hadn’t done a Doobie Brothers tour since 1996 before they launched their anniversary tour in 2021 . He’s an amazing talent. And he did sing lead on several of their biggest singles, from “Takin’ it To the Streets” to “Minute by Minute” and “What a Fool Believes,” which took them to the top a second time on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The anniversary tour played Phoenix twice. And they’re still out there touring — and recording! — with McDonald, who seemed right at home from the time he strolled onstage and took his place behind the keyboards when the tour hit Footprint Center on Wednesday, June 26.

Doobie Brothers setlist: Every song Michael McDonald and crew did in Phoenix

Michael McDonald shared spotlight with Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons

McDonald shared the vocal spotlight with two founding members, guitarists Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, with Johnston out front on such crowd-pleasing classics as “Listen to the Music,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove” and Simmons at the wheel on a spirited “Jesus is Just Alright” and “Black Water,” the Doobies’ first chart-topping entry on the Hot 100.

Even John McFee took a turn in the spotlight, swapping vocals with McDonald on the soulful “One Step Closer.”

All three guitarists — Johnston, Simmons and McFee, a multi-instrumentalist who nailed the blues-harp break on “Long Train Runnin’” and the fiddle on “Black Water” — had a chance to shine on lead guitar.

McDonald’s keyboard playing was fantastic.

A karaoke machine would probably have docked McDonald points for all the liberties he took with the delivery of his greatest hits, approaching “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute” as opportunities to re-explore his signature songs with the looseness of phrasing a jazz singer might have applied to re-interpreting those songs.

But here's the thing. He sounded great. As did Johnston, whose voice is apparently ageless, and Simmons.

Doobie Brothers touring members added to the magic of concert

The four official members were joined by touring bassist John Cowan, drummer Ed Toth, percussionist Mark Quinones and saxophone hero Marc Russo, whose habit of ending his solos really wailing on those high notes, often drew spontaneous ovations from the audience, especially on “Eyes of Silver” and “Long Train Runnin’.”

The video screen behind the stage was often filled with footage of the Doobie Brothers in the ‘70s — performance clips as well as old home movies of the band on tour in a plane that said the Doobieliner during “What a Fool Believes.”

It was especially thrilling to watch Simmons solo along to a younger version of himself on “Dependin’ on You.”

As long as they kept the focus on the Doobie Brothers, the visuals were great. The scenes of couples of a certain age embracing during “Here to Love You” felt uncomfortably close to a TV commercial on how you, too, can conquer erectile dysfunction with a hint of Folgers in your cup. Which is to say it felt a little corny.

Doobie Brothers tour puts focus on hit songs that define their legacy

They started the show on a high note with their cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland standard “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While),” a Motown classic first recorded by Kim Weston that became one of the Doobie Brothers' biggest hits.

Before the set was through, they’d touched on nearly all the staples you’d expect while dusting off a highlight of their latest album, “Liberte,” a song called “Cannonball” that Simmons said he chose because he wanted to do a motorcycle song.

They also did “World Gone Wrong,” the title track to an album from 2010 that definitely lived up to its introduction of “We’re gonna take you down to New Orleans."

The Doobies held their heaviest hitters for the back half of the concert, bringing the set to a crowd-pleasing finish with “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “What a Fool Believes,” “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove” (which brought more people to their feet than any other song they’d done until that point)

Then they came back to open their encore with another of their most enduring hits, “Black Water,” which became a massive singalong. An instrumental version of “Amazing Grace” by Russo and McDonald gave way to a suitably spirited “Takin’ It to the Streets” before they signed with one final classic, “Listen to the Music.”

The Robert Cray Band opened for the Doobie Brothers in Phoenix

The Robert Cray Band opened with a set of truly soulful blues and R&B led by Cray, who squeezed out some amazing solos on guitar with testing the limits of his vocal range on several highlights of his set, including a slow-burning cover of “Sittin’ on Top of the World” and a suitably fiery version of “Hot.”

He’s got a great band, from George Sluppick swinging the beat with authority behind the kit to keyboard player Dover “White Cliffs” Weinberg coming through with something guaranteed to grab you by the collar every time he stepped into the spotlight, up to and including that ridiculously high note on the organ at the end of “Time Makes Two.”
