Bringing a Bottle Back: How to Protect Your Wine for the Flight Home

As wine enthusiasts eagerly embark on bucket-list enotravel to visit the world’s most renowned wine regions , the desire to bring home wine or spirits for personal collections or to share with friends and family while reminiscing about their adventures is stronger than ever. But to many of us, the thought of seeing our luggage on the arrival carousel in a puddle of claret is too frightening, and we simply avoid it altogether.

So, how does one minimize the risks of bringing back a sip-able souvenir?  Let’s review and critique the options for protecting special wine bottles you find on your travels.

Worry-free travel, with a price tag

Macgyver-ing the wine pack job.

In a pinch, many of us have tried to protect the bottle with the clothes or contents already at hand in our luggage. Although this most commonly-used option may not seem to warrant explanation, there is a science to giving this method a modicum of impact and leak resistance.

Start by slipping the bottle in a thick sock for the first layer of protection. Next, slide the sock-lined bottle into the base of a boot, or thickly and tightly wrap with jeans or a chunky sweater. The more layers the better. For leak insurance, insert the bottle into a heavy-duty garbage bag and roll it up like a sleeping bag. Lastly, and most importantly, the bottle needs to be in the middle of your suitcase, surrounded on all 6 sides by clothing or other articles.

Advantages: Little or no cost; takes up no additional space in luggage; no need to pack an additional accessory; can pack essentially any size/shaped bottle.

Disadvantages: Keep your fingers crossed if TSA inspects and repacks your bags; moderate risk for breakage/leakage remains.

Wine travel sleeves offer basic, but limited protection

Consider upleveling the basic option simply by bringing a neoprene wine tote/sleeve along and use in lieu of a sock as the first layer of protection. Neoprene is basically a rubber and offers much more impact protection than a cotton sock. It’s also inexpensive and easy to pack prior.

Ubiquitous and found online and within wine tasting rooms, the most common wine travel sleeve is a style of thick, heavy plastic bubble wrap with a Ziplock and/or folding velcro closure to prevent leaking. These widely available products carry an inexpensive price tag, and are compact in size while either full or empty. The bubble wrap, however, gives much less impact protection than one would think, and the plastic can be easily punctured by broken glass, risking spillage onto other luggage contents. If used, consider wrapping these sleeves within a heavy article of clothing and finish off by rolling them up in a garbage bag. Common examples of these are Wine Wings , JetBag , and WineSkin .

Offering slightly more protection than bubble wrap are inflatable wine sleeves that contain a bladder that is filled with air, either by using a pump or by blowing before sealing the bag. Like bubble wrap bags, Vinnibag , and the Giemson Wine Bottle Protector also have the advantage of being flat and compact while empty, but likewise are susceptible to puncture if the bottle breaks. The main disadvantages with these is that they take up considerable space when inflated (especially if accompanied by a pump) and they must be filled with considerable air pressure to be effective at all.

Advantages: Widely available; low cost; very portable; the non-inflatables take up minimal space; accommodates essentially all 750ml sized bottles.

Disadvantages: Only moderate protection–till susceptible to breaking and puncture/leaking; inflatables may take up considerable space and may burst with increases in cabin pressure.

Vingarde Valise wine travel suitcase 12 bottles

Hard cases are reliable but large

Used by wine professionals who travel with multiple bottles for business (or if you don’t mind hauling an extra bag or possibly paying excess airline fees), by far the best armor for bottles is a hard case. These are larger, check-in luggage cases containing foam inserts meant to handle up to 12 bottles of wine, such as the VinGarde Valise  or Vino Voyage . Coming in a range of sizes and with some variability in shell rigidity, these cases can offer the most reliable protection against bottle breakage. Smaller options for one or two  bottles exist, but be prepared to sacrifice some luggage space for this type of protection.

Advantages: Best protection against impact; best for traveling with multiple bottles.

Disadvantages: Not leakproof; takes up considerable space within luggage; not very portable when empty; may not accommodate some wider bottles.

Vinarmour wine travel bag in a suitcase

New to the market and arguably the best single single-bottle carrier is the Vinarmour Wine Carrier . While no fabric is as impact-resistant as a hard case, this handmade carrier is fortified by a protective foam that absorbs 90% of impact energy, weighs much less than a hard case, and can be compactly folded down portable when not in use. Two different types of Kevlar and Dyneema—all used in making protective body armor—make it the only puncture  AND leakproof wine bag on the market. Vinarmour’s versatility makes it well worth the high cost: not only does it function as a stylish tote for carrying around town, but it also keeps wines chilled twice as long as neoprene.

Advantages: Excellent impact, puncture and leak protection; folds compact and portable; occupies minimal space; multi-use/versatility as a carrier or tote; thermally insulative.

Disadvantages: High cost (especially if traveling with more than one bottle); less shock-resistant than hard cases; may not accommodate bottles larger than standard champagne size.

Traveling with wine or spirit bottles will always involve some risks and trade-offs, but one of the great pleasures of wine tourism is to bring a hard-to-find bottle back to share with friends and family. With a little knowledge of the pros and cons of proper accessories, you can minimize the risks and enjoy the fruits of your wine vacation, long after you return home.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Bags for Travel

What is the best way to travel with bottles of wine.

Wrap it up: Start by swaddling your wine bottle in bubble wrap or a padded wine sleeve. This will provide a cushion against impact and prevent any unfortunate accidents. Sock it to ’em: For an extra layer of protection, slip the wrapped bottle into a thick sock or a piece of clothing. This adds cushioning and prevents the bottles from clinking together if you’re packing more than one. Nestle it in: When placing the bottle in your suitcase, position it in the center, surrounded by soft items like clothes, towels, or even a travel pillow. These items will act as shock absorbers, further safeguarding your wine. Consider a wine carrier: If you’re a frequent wine traveler, investing in a specially designed wine carrier, like the Vinarmour Wine Carrier , can offer unparalleled protection, style, and peace of mind. Go hard-shell: For maximum protection, opt for a hard-shell suitcase. The rigid exterior can better withstand impacts, keeping your wine bottles safe from harm.

Are you allowed to pack wine in a suitcase?

Absolutely! You can pack wine in your suitcase, but it’s important to follow airline guidelines and pack it safely to ensure your precious bottles arrive intact. When packing wine in your checked luggage, make sure to: Adhere to quantity limits: Most airlines follow the TSA guidelines, allowing alcohol in checked luggage as long as it doesn’t exceed 70% alcohol by volume (ABV). Wine usually falls within this range with an ABV of around 12-16%. Be sure to check with your airline for any specific quantity restrictions. Pack carefully: Use bubble wrap, a padded wine sleeve, or clothing to cushion your wine bottles and prevent breakage. Position the bottles in the center of your suitcase, surrounded by soft items like clothes or towels to absorb shocks during transit. Be mindful of international travel: When traveling internationally, research customs regulations and any potential duties or taxes you may need to pay when bringing wine into your destination country. Consider a wine carrier or hard-shell suitcase: For added protection and peace of mind, invest in a dedicated wine carrier, like the Vinarmour Wine Carrier, or use a hard-shell suitcase to better safeguard your bottles. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to pack wine in your suitcase and enjoy your favorite vintages at your destination without worry. Happy travels!

Best wine suitcase and wine luggage carriers for 2022.

We’ve visited more wineries while traveling than might be healthy for two people. Every time we visit a winery that we love we want to purchase a case of wine (maybe two). Now that we live surrounded by an amazing Catalan wine region, it’s not a problem. But, when we are traveling, there is always the problem of how to travel with wine.

Whether driving with wine or flying with wine, a lot goes into figuring out what is the best wine travel bag, and that can include wine luggage or a wine suitcase. But it also can include a wine carrier bag, or just packing wine in a suitcase. What is most important is how to transport wine securely and safely.

In this wine carrier bag buying guide, we are going to walk through how to pack wine bottles in a variety of ways. This will cover everything you need to know about taking wine on a plane, as well as advice on how to protect wine on the ground with a wine bottle carrying case.

The Best Wine Suitcase And Wine Luggage

Buying Guide – Best Wine Suitcase And Wine Luggage – 2022

There is a lot that goes into bringing wine on a plane. Unfortunately, most international flights don’t permit wine in carry-on luggage unless it’s purchased from duty-free. Whether you want to learn how to pack wine in luggage or purchase official wine luggage that is made for transporting wine, we can help.

Below we cover in more detail the different wine bottle packing options, but if you are looking for some quick recommendations for a wine carrier bag, here are our top recommendations. We recommend using Amazon for purchases like this. First off, they deliver around the world. Second, if you have Amazon Prime many of these products ship for free. (Get 30 days of Prime free here ).

What To Consider When Looking For The Best Wine Travel Bag

wine carrier for travel

Before we share reviews for each of the options we cover in the wine luggage buying guide above, there are a few questions to answer to narrow down your needs.

Then, take a look at the descriptions of each of the options below to determine the best wine luggage that fits your needs. All of these suitcases can be bought on Amazon. I recommend reading all of the product descriptions on Amazon to make sure it fits your needs.

Are You A Wine Professional?

If you are a wine professional who travels regularly with high priced bottles of wine, then the best wine travel suitcase is one for wine professionals. In this case, invest in something durable and sturdy. Ensure that the bottles will be safe within the padding of the suitcase and that you can use a TSA approved lock . This is important anytime you check wine with an airline as baggage handlers might not treat it like the precious cargo we think it is.

Although the TSA does not place restrictions on the amount of wine you can travel with, the airline might place restrictions on the total weight you are allowed to check. Last, if you are a wine professional, you probably want to focus on 12 bottle wine transport luggage, something made for professionals.

How Often Do You Travel With Wine?

wine carrier for travel

Although there are days when I feel like a wine professional, particularly when I look around at our overflowing wine racks , I am not. Many wine travelers are merely wine enthusiasts. They travel to a destination, visit wineries, and fall in love with a handful of wines that they want to bring home with them. This is us. The question is how often do you do this.

If you travel to several wine destinations a year with an intention of bringing wine home, then it is worth it to invest in a quality wine luggage bag. This is probably the most important issue to consider when purchasing a wine travel case.

How Many Bottles Do You Want To Carry?

Last, how many wine bottles do you plan to travel with? If you plan to travel with six or more bottles on a regular basis, then it’s probably time to think about investing in proper luggage. If you are an occasional wine transporter, we recommend some more casual options as well below.

The Best Wine Carrier Suitcases

When looking for a serious wine travel case, there are a few options. Most of these are hard-sided wine travel suitcases. This is an alternative to placing the wine in checked luggage, for wine travelers who know they are going to be purchasing wine, a wine luggage carrier is a great choice.

Admittedly, this is for some serious wine purchases, perhaps someone traveling to Bordeaux or Champagne. But, really, it can be for anyone who knows they will be buying 12 bottles of wine that they plan on checking, and want to bring home safely.

There are two primary types of wine carrying cases that can be called wine luggage. One looks like typical wheeled luggage, and the other looks a little more hard-core. Both are hard sided, have wheels, and will protect even the most expensive wine.

The Best Wine Luggage – VinGardeValise

wine carrier for travel

Our top pick for a wine bottle carrier that can work for both a wine professional and a wine collector looks and acts like traditional luggage, but it can, of course, hold wine.

VinGardeValise  has to be the leader in wine luggage. It’s our favorite and one of the most popular wine suitcases purchased by our readers. They offer a few different options, with different sizes and a variety of inserts to customize the interior of the bags.

VinGardeValise Grande

The VinGardeValise Grande 12 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase is one of the best wine luggage options on the market. It’s super slick, with 360-degree spinner wheels. It holds up to 12 bottles of wine, or 10 bottles of wine and two Champagne-sized bottles.

It also has a TSA approved lock to keep your wine safe when traveling. And, you can actually add clothing and toiletries into the bag, so it’s not entirely dedicated to wine.

If the 12 wine bottle luggage carrier is a bit large, VinGardeValise also makes a VinGardeValise Petite 8 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase . It has a lot of the same features as the larger version.

And, the newer VinGardeValise suitcases include one year of HomingPin lost luggage locator service. This is important if you plan to travel with high-value wine. You can also customize the inserts to hold large bottles or even craft beer.

Key Features Include :

  • Holds up to 12 bottles

Recommended Wine Cooler Bag

This wine carrier bag is more for on-the-ground travel. Its a wine carrying case that has a lot more everyday uses.

A wine bottle cooler bag allows you to travel with crisp, cold wine for any occasion. This insulated wine bag holds six bottles of wine in a water-resistant should bag. And, the liner can be removed to transform it from a wine carrier bag to a traditional beverage cooler. One thing to note, this bag cannot be used as checked wine luggage. I am including it as an option for people who oten drive with wine in their cars (we do!).

6 Wine Bottle  Premium Insulated Wine Carrier Tote Bag

Wine sleeves for airplane travel.

The other wine travel solutions and wine carrier bag options are pretty intense for serious wine travelers (of which we are proud members). But sometimes it makes more sense to consider packing wine in a suitcase instead of purchasing a separate wine suitcase to travel with.

Many people who purchase wine while traveling might only travel with a bottle or two. Or, they might be traveling with a bottle of gin or other liquor. In this case, the solution is more similar to how to package wine for shipping – carefully.

These are some of the handiest tools out there. They are like wine bubble wrap, and how fun does that sound? There are different kinds of wine bottle travel protectors that can be placed inside your own luggage. And, this one in particular, let’s you be a  Wine Hero .

These are a safe solution that is the perfect alternative to attempting to wrap a single wine bottle in loads of plastic bags at the last minute. They are almost like wine bubble wrap, where the wine traveler just slides the bottle into the sleeve and seals it shut. The wine bottle protector is then sealed at the bottom, which not only protects the wine bottle from breaking, as well as guarantees no spillage.

Wine sleeves pack flat until they are ready to use, which makes them easy to travel with on the outgoing flight. They also work for liquor bottles, olive oil, vinegar, and other liquid food souvenirs. Last, they can be used on the ground as well when transporting bottles to ensure they arrive safely.

WineHero – 6 Pack Reusable Leak Proof Bottle Protector Bag for Travel

Faqs – how to pack wine – traveling with wine bottles.

This is important to know when thinking about transporting wine and looking for wine travel bags. It depends on the location of the winery. When we lived in the US we received regular shipments from  wine clubs , many of which included 12 bottles of wine in a case. In Europe though, and particularly in Spain and Italy, many wineries offer a 6 wine bottle case. This is important to understand only when ordering wine for shipment rather than traveling with wine bottles.

There used to be more than one way to take wine on a plane. Now, it’s only possible to travel with a wine bottle in checked luggage unless it is purchased duty free.

This is pretty much answered by can you take wine on a plane, above. Currently, due to security concerns and limits on liquids in carry-on luggage for international flights you can no longer pack wine in carry-on luggage. So, yes, you can take a bottle of wine on a plane, but only in checked luggage.

No. The cargo hold on airplanes is pressurized to prevent things like this from happening. It’s not just your precious wine down below, but airplanes often act as cargo carriers for all sorts of stuff, including pets!

Rules for bringing back items like wine or alcohol vary by country. It’s best to consult the Customs laws for the country you are traveling to before making any significant purchases.

I just tried this discount code and it did not work. Can you provide a valid one? “From now through December 31, save 60% on up to 3 VinGardeValise Wine Suitcases, the Grande, Petite, and Piccolo. Use promo code WHIT2020 on the VinGarde site.”

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for letting us know about the code. Sadly, Vingarde is no longer selling its products direct. There are links to Amazon for their products in the post.

5 Best Wine Suitcases for Wine Lovers Who Travel

  • by Anna Maria
  • November 19, 2021 December 29, 2021

As a wine tour owner, I meet hundreds of wine lovers a year. Since I was planning on making the leap and finally investing in my own wine luggage, I paid specific attention to what my guests were using for wine suitcases this year. It also gave me the opportunity to get up close with each wine suitcase to test out how they felt; whether they felt durable or flimsy, bulky or sleek. The most important of factor, of course, is if the wine suitcases protected the wine during air travel. Here are the results! Read to the end to see what wine luggage I ended up buying.

What is a wine suitcase and do I need one?

A wine suitcase is a specific piece of luggage designed to transport wine for air travel. This means they are designed to protect wine during travel while maximizing the space within the suitcase. There are wine suitcases that just hold wine and others that have space for wine and your clothing. If you plan on buying wine while traveling, I highly suggest you consider buying a wine suitcase for air travel.

In 2019, I bought 13 bottles of wine in Lebanon. I came home with 11 of them. Two perished in my non-wine suitcase. I thought my clothes and my towels would be enough to protect them, I was wrong. Since then I’ve been pretty adamant about how I travel with wine. On my recent wine trips to Hungary, Barolo, Rome, and France, I was sure to be prepared with the proper wine luggage.

wine carrier for travel

But first, what if you’re not ready to buy a wine suitcase but still want to protect your wine?

If you’re not the type of wine lover who is willing to commit an entire checked bag to wine, I highly recommend you AT LEAST invest in some wine sleeves. The brand I used before I bought my own wine suitcase is called Wine Skin. They’re relatively inexpensive and you can get them online . They’re basically bubble wrap that contours the shape of the wine bottle and double seals in the off chance that the wine breaks to protect your clothing.

I had one guest swear by the inflatable wine sleeves . I personally have never used them because I think they’d take up too much space in my luggage, but she was pretty convincing so I thought I’d include them. I think these would be great if you’re shipping a bottle of wine as a gift. Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever used these.

Okay, you’ve committed to buying a wine suitcase…

Alright wine lovers, let’s get it going. Wine suitcases come in all different shapes, sizes, and bottle capacities…and let’s be honest, budget is also really important. These wine luggage options are not in any particular order but I do save my personal favorite wine suitcase for last. With the purchase of one of these wine suitcases you can buy wine while traveling and be confident it’ll make it home safely.

Vino-Voyage 2.0 by Wine Enthusiast TSA-Approved 6-Bottle Wine Suitcase

wine enthusiast wine suitcases

This wine suitcase is from Wine Enthusiast, one of the most trusted names in wine. A guest I did a tour with in June had this suitcase and I was first struck by the Bordeaux color. It’s relatively small and quite lightweight. Inside there is foam to protect the bottles. It can fit up to 6 bottles of any size. The wine suitcase itself is hard shell so there’s no fear of it getting bumped.

  • Hard-shell with reinforced corners
  • Lightweight
  • Small and compact
  • 4 castor wheels and retractable handle
  • Dimensions: 8.5”W x 8.5”D x 18”H or 20cm x 20cm x 45cm
  • Holds 6 bottles
  • Can hold any standard sized shape bottle
  • TSA-Approved
  • Approximate cost $199
  • Well made and sturdy

Buy it on Amazon.

CasePro CP-WINE-12B 12 Bottle Wine Carrier with Wheels

wine carrier for travel

When my guests from DC rolled up (literally) with this monster, I knew it was going to be a great tour. These wine suitcases are indestructible. I’m pretty sure it could fall from the plane and not a single bottle would break; I mean, it is a black box, after all. The entire design of the CasePro wine suitcase is based on functionality and durability. Yeah, it’s not pretty on the eyes but your wine will make it home safely. The only downfall here is that it’s heavy– 25 pounds/ 12 kilos without any wine in it. With each wine bottle weighing 2.2lbs or 1 kilo, you’re looking at being over 50lbs or 22 kilos, you may have to pay an extra-heavy luggage fee, or like these guests, they have elite status so they load it up.

  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Maintains proper temperature for up to 8 hours
  • Withstands extreme temperatures
  • Dimensions: L 25.63″ x W 19.5″ x H 15.63″ or 64cm x 49cm x 40cm
  • Holds 12 bottles and has a spot for wine accessories
  • Can hold any shape bottle
  • Approximate cost $399
  • For the serious wine collector

KARRIAGE-MATE Multiple Purpose Wine Travel Hardside Luggage 10 Bottles

KARRIAGE-MATE Multiple Purpose Wine Travel Hardside Luggage for Carrying 10 Bottles Wine

There’s quite a few things to love about this particular wine suitcase. First, it holds 10 bottles which is almost exactly the right weight to be able to check it with overweight fees. Second, it comes in a bunch of fun patterns and colors like leopard print and zebra. Third, you can use all or some of the inserts to customize it to your needs. And lastly, it can be dropped from 6 feet up in the air and survive- let’s not test that.

  • Lightweight but durable
  • With 10 bottles of wine the weight is 40lbs or 18kg
  • Maintains bottle temperature
  • Dimensions: 17″ x 10″ x 26″ or 43cm x 25cm x 66cm
  • 4 castor wheels for easy traveling
  • Approximate cost $250
  • The inserts can be used separately which is a major bonus

I Saved the Best Wine Suitcases for Last

VinGardeValise is my favorite brand of wine suitcases. They are a wine people doing suitcases, not suitcase people doing wine so they are very in tune to the wine traveller’s needs. The company is great, the product is of a very high quality, and not for nothing, their branding is excellent as well. I’ve always known that when it came time for me to invest in a proper wine suitcase that I would buy a VinGardeValise. Then it just came down to which size…so which did I pick, well, not this next one, but the last one.

VinGardeValise Grande – Up to 12 Bottles & All Purpose Wine Travel Suitcase

wine carrier for travel

I really really really wanted the VinGardeValise Grande . Like, really bad. It’s the absolute best wine suitcase. The design is great, the features are great, everything is as I would have designed it myself BUT because I usually travel with budget airlines, it was just every so slightly too big for me. Fully packed it’s 22kg or 50lbs whereas the limit when I fly is 20kg. Now I know what you’re saying, get the big one and don’t fill it all the way, but I know myself and I’d be too tempted to stuff it.

Now if the airline you travel on always that much weight without overweight luggage fees, then absolutely buy this wine suitcase. You will not regret it.

  • Specifically designed for wine lovers who travel
  • Guaranteed to protect bottles
  • With 12 bottles of wine the weight is 50lbs or 22kg
  • Flexible design to allow for wine AND clothing
  • Dimensions: 18” x 13.5” x 27” or 46cm x 36cm x 69cm
  • Can hold both Burgundy and Bordeaux style bottles
  • TSA compliant lock
  • Extra security from seatbelt straps
  • It’s also sexy AF

Drumroll please…and the wine suitcase I ended up buying is….

Vingardevalise “petite” – up to 8 bottles & all purpose wine travel suitcase.

the wine suitcase I bought

Like I said above, I knew when it came time to start being serious about wine suitcases that I would buy a VinGardeValise . The 8 bottle “Petite” size is absolutely perfect for me. It can carry up to 8 bottles and still have some wiggle room for a pair of shoes or a few things that don’t fit in my carry on. When I travel to a wine region, I usually buy about 8 bottles anyway, I like to pretend I’m a baller buying cases but I’m just too broke for that, haha! I have travelled to a couple of wine regions with it now and I am so happy with my purchase. It was a bit of a splurge for my budget, but I’d buy it over and over again.

  • With 8 bottles of wine the weight is 40lbs or 18kg
  • Dimensions: 18” x 13” x 22”  or 46cm x 33cm x 56cm
  • Approximate cost $299

A Few FAQ About Traveling with Wine

How much does a bottle of wine weigh.

The average 750ml standard sized wine bottle weighs 2.65lbs or 1.2 kg. HOWEVER, some wine bottles weight more and can reach 3.2lbs or 1.5kg. Trust me, weigh your suitcase and don’t rely on an estimate- I learned this the hard weigh after traveling to Chateauneuf du Pape. Do yourself a favor and buy a luggage scale.

How much does a bottle of Champagne weigh?

Because Champagne must be made of a heavier glass, Champagne bottles weight approximately 3lbs or 1.4kg.

Will Champagne explode in checked luggage?

Thank Dionysus, no. Champagne will not explode in checked luggage. The luggage areas are pressurized like the rest of the plane.

Can you fly with wine in a carry on?

Nope, no, absolutely not. Unfortunately, because some a-hole brought liquid chemicals on a plane in hopes to take it down, liquids are restricted to 100ml or 3.3oz. Wine bottles are 750ml or 25.4oz. Now, has the airline world taken full advantage of the situation because they’re making a killing off of baggage fees, yes. It’s a racket for sure.

Thank you so much! I just traveled to California and didn’t realize there was such a difference in taste between the wineries here in the Midwest. I FELL IN LOVE with the Zinfandel and Syrah and Cab-Savs and…well you get my drift. Not only did I pay steep prices for the wine, I paid over $160 to ship 8 to Ohio. I didnt know such things existed until 24hr before my flight. This review has narrowed the list down tremendously!

The 10 Best Wine Totes and Bags of 2024

Because your favorite bottles deserve to travel in style

wine carrier for travel

The Spruce Eats / Lecia Landis

Investing in a good wine tote is about more than just getting your bottle (or bottles) from point A to point B. They should be made with durable, long-lasting materials that are strong enough to keep your wine safe from any drops or bumps in the road. You’ll also want a sturdy base to protect the bottom of your bottle and help the bag stay upright.

Leather is a great option for a more fashionable design, while materials like nylon and canvas provide extra flexibility and lower costs. Of course, additional padding and insulation will ensure your bottles maintain the optimal temperature, even on a hot day.

Bringing a bottle or two is a great way to show your appreciation for a party invite and an even better last-minute birthday gift. Another plus? Reusable wine totes remove the need for single-use wine bags that may end up ripped or tossed in the trash once you’ve reached your destination.

Its distressed-style, waxed cotton canvas exterior is water-resistant and attractive, while the interior features a brown insulating material that matches the bag’s adjustable shoulder straps and base. The leatherette closing straps give this bag an extra level of style.

The bag holds two bottles on their sides—which we love because it helps prevent oxidation—as well as an included set of stemless wine glasses, a wine stopper, a beautiful bottle opener, and an acacia wood snack table. Use the mini wooden table with the metal legs folded up as a classic cheese board or extended to keep it elevated and stable above softer surfaces like sand.

Materials: Waxed-cotton canvas, leatherette, nylon | Dimensions: 12.5 x 4.75 x 11.5 inches | Holds: Two bottles

Best Neoprene

Built neoprene wine tote.

Machine washable

Soft, lightweight material

Folds down for storage

A neoprene wine tote is a casual, budget-conscious option that easily folds down to fit inside a purse or backpack once empty. Why is this a great feature? It means you won’t forget your tote at the restaurant, friend’s house, etc. when it's time to go home (we can’t tell you how many wine totes we’ve lost this way!). The super-lightweight neoprene material is soft and squishy yet durable enough to keep your bottles safe and secure; plus, it's insulated. We also appreciate the velcro closure on top.

If you get this bag dirty, it washes up easily in the washing machine. BUILT also makes a two-bottle carrier with the same material.

Materials: Neoprene | Dimensions: 16 x 5 x 0.5 inches | Holds: One bottle

Best Canvas

Wine enthusiast waxed canvas weekend wine carrier.

Holds taller and oversized bottles

Includes ice pack

Large outer pocket

Material is easy to scratch

With enough space to hold an impressive six bottles, this thick canvas wine tote is great for longer trips and getaways. Even better, the bag has higher walls to accommodate oversized or taller bottles. A sleek design combines hunter green with dark brown, and a removable strap can transform the tote from handheld to over-the-shoulder. Inside, the slots are padded with insulating fabric and it includes an ice pack to help keep things extra cold like the best wine chiller buckets .

The canvas material is super durable (though some reviewers said it can scratch easily), and it's surprisingly lightweight considering the size. There’s also a leather hang tag that gives the bag a world-traveler vibe. To top everything off, a zippered exterior pocket is big enough to hold any extras like wine stoppers or bottle openers .

Material: Waxed canvas, nylon | Dimensions: 11 x 7 x 13 inches | Holds: Six bottles

What to Look for in a Wine Tote

Choosing high-quality materials for your wine tote will help keep your bottles secure and ensure that your reusable tote lasts for a long time. Materials like leather will stay in great condition (with the proper care) for years to come and add an element of style to your bag. On the other hand, synthetic materials like plastic or nylon can be easier to clean and often provide more insulation to keep your wine chilled. Waxed canvas—a woven fabric made from cotton or linen and wax—is a great middle ground because it is durable, attractive, and water-resistant.

Padding and Insulation

If you live in a warmer climate, you may want to consider a wine tote with insulation to keep your bottles from overheating (that goes for both red and white wine, but especially the latter). It’s always a good idea to look for extra padding inside your tote as well as a sturdy base to keep it from falling over and damaging the bottles.

Accessories

A lot of wine totes and bags come with additional accessories like outdoor wine glasses , foil cutters, and bottle openers. Some even include inner or outer pockets to hold wine tools or personal items. Pay attention to these extras since they may increase the overall value of your wine tote.

What else can you use wine totes for?

We love using a wine tote to gift a special bottle of wine to a friend or family member. That way, they can enjoy the wine and keep the wine tote to regift or reuse in the future. It’s also a great excuse to create a personalized wine tote with the giftee’s initials or name. Another great use for wine totes is as reusable water bottle carriers.

Can you bring wine in a checked bag at the airport?

Wine bottles should be placed in checked luggage for travel, but you should always double-check with your specific airline before bringing alcohol on board. Any alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol (wine is typically around 12% on average) are not subject to limitations in checked bags.

What is the best material for a wine tote?

That depends on a couple of factors, including the climate and what type of wine you’re carrying. Generally, choose a material like canvas, leather, or nylon that is flexible and sturdy but still provides some kind of insulation to keep your bottles protected from the elements.

Best Wine Travel Bags – Wine Suitcases, Luggage, & How To Pack Wine

We consider ourselves professional eaters. We also sometimes joke that we are professional drinkers, but that is not as socially acceptable. However you want to call it, we often find ourselves flying with wine or other alcohol. I never thought we’d become experts at traveling with wine, but here we have it. That’s why we wanted to offer suggestions and tips on the best wine travel bags. The options we offer include wine suitcases, wine luggage, wine totes, and other ways to pack wine.

The Best Wine Suitcases:

According to our readers, these are the most popular wine luggage options that we recommend:

  • VinGardeValise Grande 12 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase
  • CasePro Wine Carrier with Wheels  – 12 Bottles
  • Wine Enthusiast Vino Voyage – 12 Bottles

Our Experience Flying With Wine

I would like to say that we travel with wine solely because of our profession as food and drink writers. The truth is that we’ve been purchasing wine and traveling with it for almost two decades. In that time, we’ve tried almost everything.

During the early years, we would purchase a case or more from winemakers and have them shipped from Italy or Spain back to the US. We’ve on occasion stuck a wine bottle in our luggage, or a bottle of gin or whiskey, wrapped in an old t-shirt and hoped for the best.

In recent years, though, we’ve done a lot more research on how to travel with wine. After all, wine is one of our favorite souvenirs to bring back. We are not going to stop traveling with wine. Eventually, we knew our luck would run out and one of those bottles wrapped in a t-shirt would break. Wine is delicate and it must be packed with care.

The Best Wine Carrying Cases

In this post, we offer a wide variety of options for wine bottle carrier bags. I include full reviews of each option below. Most of them are specifically designed for air travel. Some work well on the ground too. If you are short on time, feel free to use the table below, which includes all our recommendations. I also include travel tips on how to pack wine bottles in different ways and how to keep up-to-date on rules about traveling with wine.

All of these options are available on Amazon. We like Amazon for a couple of reasons. First, they have a good variety of options for wine bags for air travel and local travel, at every price point. Second, we try to recommend products that are part of  Amazon Prime , which provides purchasers with free and often super-fast delivery. (Get 30 days of Prime free  here .)

The Best Wine Suitcases And Wine Luggage – Reviews

If you are a wine professional, like we are quickly becoming, you may need to travel with a good amount of wine. This option also works for wine aficionados who know when they leave home for a trip that they are bringing back a good amount of wine. A quality wine suitcase will ensure that any checked wine is well-protected to avoid any breakage.

Most of these options are hard-sided wine travel suitcases. They are rugged and made to withstand airplane travel. Some also have a little bit of elegance or class to them.

There are a few types of wine luggage in this category. One type looks like typical wheeled luggage and from the outside, no one would know the case contained bottles of wine. Other types look a little more like they contain wine and range from hardcore to practical in style. All of these options have wheels to make them easier to move.

I don’t spend time in the wine luggage reviews below on the dimensions of the case or carrier. This is because they are all roughly the same size. It is also because they are checked luggage so there is no need to worry about carry-on luggage dimensions.

VinGardeValise Wine Luggage

Our top pick for a wine suitcase for wine pros, vingardevalise grande – 12 bottles.

wine carrier for travel

For true wine professionals, the VinGardeValise Grande 12 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase is a great option. I like that it looks like regular luggage. This 12 bottle rolling wine bag even has 360-degree spinner wheels so it is easy to maneuver. It’s perfect for both a wine pro and a wine enthusiast.

The wine suitcase holds up to 12 bottles of wine or 10 bottles of wine and two bottles of Champagne, or similarly shaped larger bottles. The interior is flexible, meaning it can hold six bottles along with clothes, or 12 bottles. The case weighs only 13.5 pounds, which means full with 12 bottles it will weigh less than 50 pounds.

This case includes a TSA-approved lock rather than a hard padlock, which keeps the wine secure but allows TSA inspection. It also comes with HomingPin, which is a lost luggage locator system, sort of like a lo-jack for wine suitcases. It comes in black, silver, and burgundy. They also sell versions with personalized nameplates, which are a nice touch for a wine gift. The luggage also comes with a 10-year warranty.

It’s hard not to say that this is the best wine suitcase on the market, based on features and reputation. The foam inserts are high-density and well-made. The luggage has a new ribbed design along with a reinforcement bar and corner guards to protect the wine inside.

  • Holds 12 bottles of most shapes
  • The interior is customizable to hold wine, wine accessories, and even clothes
  • Airline approved and satisfies requirements of TSA and FAA, including TSA-approved lock and HomingPin luggage locator
  • Fully loaded it weighs under 50 pounds

VinGardeValise Petite – Up To 8 Bottles

wine carrier for travel

If the VinGardeValise Grande is a little too much, then the VinGardeValise Petite 8 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase might be the perfect solution.

This rolling wine bag has a lot of the same features as the larger version. It transports up to eight bottles and has flexible inserts to carry wine or clothes or personal items. Empty the wine luggage weighs about 12 pounds, which is a lot lighter than the 12 bottle version.

It includes the HomingPin lost luggage locator and a TSA-approved lock. It comes in blue, silver, and burgundy all of which can be purchased with the customized nameplate. The VinGardeValie Petite has a limited 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

OTHER WINE SUITCASE BRANDS

Casepro 12 bottle wine travel case.

wine carrier for travel

The CasePro 12 Bottle Wine Travel Case takes things up a notch from the VinGarde Valise. The CasePro holds 12 bottles of wine. It is thermally insulated to maintain wine temperatures during flights. This is a great feature when traveling with high-value wines. There is also space for wine accessories, like corkscrews and aerators, which you might not be able to carry on the airplane.

The insulated foam can hold almost any bottle size. There are foam neck caps to hold bottles in place. The case is insulated against heat, and cold, and is waterproof. It also protects against shocks and vibration, which is important with wine transport.

The CasePro also comes as an  8 bottle wine carrier suitcase  and in larger sizes, up to  24 bottles . When comparing the CasePro to the VinGardeValise, I would suggest the CasePro is best for wine professionals whereas the VinGarde Valise would work for wine pros and wine enthusiasts. The case weighs 25 pounds, which would place the total weight filled with 12 bottles of wine at around 60 pounds.

T.Z. CASE INTERNATIONAL 7 BOTTLE WINE ROLLER BAG

wine carrier for travel

The T.Z. Case International 7-Bottle Wheeled Wine Roller Bag is a happy medium between the CasePro and the VinGardeValise.  TZ Case International  is a specialist in travel cases, for beauty products, sporting products, and wine.

It holds up to seven wine bottles in a rugged molded polypropylene case with flexible foam inserts. The inserts can be removed to hold clothes and other personal items. The luggage is both water and dust-resistant. It’s also lighter weight than the other options, weighing in at only 10 pounds and about 35 pounds loaded with wine. Although not specifically marketed as TSA or FAA-approved like the VinGardeValise there are no reported problems carrying it domestically or internationally.

I actually like the shape of this, which is less bulky and would make it easier to carry along with a regular suitcase. It’s a good value option in comparison to the others. The TZ Case International is smaller, with fewer bells and whistles, but also is less expensive.

WINE CHECK LUGGAGE

wine carrier for travel

The Wine Check Luggage is a great alternative to the more hefty wine suitcases, above. It is made of high-quality nylon with reinforced stitching.

Here’s how it works. There are two pieces that are sold separately. There is a wine check bag and styrofoam inserts. Here it is sold as a complete set. The wine check bag is collapsible foldable, making it easy to store when not in use.

The bag and inserts only weigh about five pounds, making it the lightest option on our list. Even when filled with 12 bottles of wine, the total weight would be well less than 50 pounds. It is approved by the FAA and the TSA.

WINEBUDDY BY MC CASES

wine carrier for travel

Similar to TZ Case International,  MC-Cases  specializes in travel cases, but of a pretty rugged variety. They specialize in cases for high-end cameras and drones, so they are known for transporting high-value items.

The Winebuddy Wine Travel Luggage is made in Germany and stores up to eight wine bottles. It really is a dedicated wine suitcase because the inserts are not as flexible as the VinGardeValise. The inserts are made for standard 750ml bottles. Although it doesn’t come with a TSA-approved lock, it has holes in the case for one. The case is waterproof, dust-proof, and durable.

VINO VOYAGE BY WINE ENTHUSIAST

wine carrier for travel

We’ve been big fans of Wine Enthusiast products for years, ever since we started collecting wine over 10 years ago. The Vino-Voyage 2.0 by Wine Enthusiast is the latest iteration of their wine suitcase.

It comes in Bordeaux red with four spinner wheels. It’s durable and lightweight. The Vino Voyage has reinforced corner protectors to ensure the wine inside stays safe during transport. There is a TSA-approved lock for security.

One of the most unique things about this wine luggage is that it has a built-in electronic luggage scale. This means you can always confirm the weight of the bag before checking it. Don’t worry that you will be over your luggage limit. Overall, it’s a pretty slick option.

WINE SLEEVES FOR TRAVEL

When it comes to how to pack wine in a suitcase, the biggest concern is how to protect the wine from breakage during the flight. One of the best ways to do this is to buy a wine sleeve, which acts like wine bubble wrap. Our favorite brand is  WineHero .

This is a six-pack of bubble wrap wine bottle protectors, but it does a lot more than simple bubble wrap. It’s leak-proof and waterproof. They work for wine, liquor, beer, olive oil, and other liquids that are similar in shape. After our recent trip to  Speyside  in Scotland, we fit a rather wide bottle of whisky in ours too.

They work by using a combination of Ziploc and velcro closures to make the wine sleeve reusable as well. What I like about these is that they travel flat, so you can add a few to your suitcase on the way out and use them if you need to on the way back.

WINE TOTE BAGS AND INSULATED TOTES

The main purpose of this wine accessory blog post is to help travelers fly with wine. I wanted, though, to share our recommendations for a few wine totes. Here, I focus on insulated wine tote bags. The insulation helps to protect the wine as well as to keep it chilled. This makes it a great option for bringing white wine or sparkling wine to a friend’s house. They are also great solutions for picnics and BBQs.

A wine tote bag makes a great wine gift, but it’s also a worthwhile investment for frequent wine drinkers. Wine bottles can break easily, even when carrying them short distances. Not only is that wasted wine, but it can destroy a purse or the back seat of a car in seconds.

OPUX PREMIUM 6 BOTTLE WINE BAG

wine carrier for travel

The Opux Premium 6 Bottle Wine Bag is another wine travel bag option. This is a super practical bag for transporting wine on the ground, but it cannot be checked onto an airplane.

Despite that, it works well. The case has insulated, padded sides, with removable wine inserts inside. The case is insulated so it can be used for picnics and camping. It can be carried like a wine tote or carried on the shoulder. The bag is available in black, brown, and gray.

INSULATED WINE BAG

The  Premium Insulated Wine Bag  by Opux is the perfect wine tote. It holds six bottles, although there is a four bottle option too. The bag comes in three colors: heather grey, black, and black with tan striping.

The interior of the travel wine cooler bag includes padded wine bottle protection as well as temperature control. Although it doesn’t  chill the wine , it will keep chilled wine cool for hours. There’s a detachable shoulder strap as well as padded hand straps for easy carrying.

wine carrier for travel

TIRRINIA TRAVEL WINE COOLER

The Tirrinia Insulated Travel Wine Cooler Bag is a smaller alternative but equally functional wine tote. There’s a sturdy leather handle and an adjustable shoulder strap. It is padded and insulated. This protects the wine and keeps chilled wine cool. It holds two bottles of wine or sparkling wine. It can be used for other beverages as well.

In addition to red, this tote comes in grey as well as black, black with colors, and white with black, all in pretty contemporary designs. It also makes a great wine gift.

Can You Take Wine On A Plane

wine carrier for travel

This is really a two-part question. The first question is whether you can bring wine in carry on luggage. The second question is can you pack wine in checked luggage? We will answer both questions, in great detail, and hopefully, this will answer all of the questions that plague travelers who want to pack wine. Taking wine on a plane is not all that difficult once you understand the rules.

Can You Carry Wine On A Plane

With all the restrictions on liquids, you cannot bring liquor or wine in carry on luggage unless it is less than 100 ml (3.4 ounces). That means travel-sized wine bottles, which do make good souvenirs, can be carried on in your luggage. But, they need to be placed in a small plastic bag, alongside your shampoo and other toiletries. It’s possible, but it’s a real pain.

The only other way to carry on a wine bottle is if you purchase it from Duty Free. We always hear stories of travelers being caught off guard and leaving Champagne behind for the security guards! Check out the TSA rules  here .

Traveling With Wine Pro Tip

If you purchase duty free liquor in Europe before traveling to the US, if you have a connecting flight there are additional rules. For example, if you fly from London to New York and then connect to Detroit you will need to collect your checked luggage in New York. Then, you need to re-check your bag to continue on to Detroit. You will need to add your duty free liquor purchase into your checked bag before continuing on to Detroit. Just be warned.

Can You Check Wine In Luggage

wine carrier for travel

This is where it gets interesting when it comes to bringing wine on a plane. If you travel with wine, it has to be in your checked luggage. There are a lot of factors that go into packing wine. These rules apply to flying with wine, Champagne, or any other bottle of alcohol. You don’t need to do anything special with the airline when you travel with wine. The real question is how to pack wine in luggage.

We will cover each of these options in detail. If you are a wine professional or frequently travel with wine, then a wine travel suitcase is probably a good investment. These would be checked as additional pieces of luggage, so be sure to check what your luggage allowance is.

On average, a bottle of wine weighs about three to four pounds. This works well if you don’t want to ship a case of wine directly from the winery.

If you only generally travel with a couple of bottles of wine there are some wine sleeves for airplane travel that are best.

People ask us all the time if it is okay to place Champagne or sparkling wine in checked luggage. Cargo holds, and the space underneath the plane is pressurized. The way sparkling wine is produced, the bottle, and the cork are made to withstand that kind of pressure.

Things To Consider When Purchasing Wine Carriers For Travel

wine carrier for travel

In order to determine which wine bottle travel bag is perfect for you, it helps to ask yourself some questions in order to determine your needs. I can certainly give my opinion on which is the best wine travel bag, but if it isn’t the right one for your needs, it’s certainly not the best.

Are You A Wine Pro?

If you are a wine pro or find yourself traveling with wine on a regular basis then something like a wine bottle suitcase is probably best for you. This is particularly true if you travel with samples to conferences or bring samples home from winery visits.

These suitcases are specifically designed to carry wine. The inside of the suitcase is layered with wine bottle protectors to prevent breakage and other damage to the wine while in transport. Some of the wine luggage options are dedicated only to wine whereas in others you can pack clothes and wine. These rules and suggestions also apply to someone who is an avid wine collector.

How Often Do You Transport Wine?

wine carrier for travel

If you are not a wine pro or wine collector, whether it is on a plane or on the ground, think about how much you travel with wine. Are you visiting one winery a year and bringing home a few bottles? Or, do you make several trips a year with the intent of bringing wine back each time? Do you bring a bottle or two of something back on every trip you take – domestic and international? Do you find yourself taking wine to people’s houses for dinners or picnics or BBQs?

When answering these questions, if you fly with wine often, wine bottle luggage might be worth the investment. If it is only once or twice a year, then wine sleeves for travel might be sufficient. If you want to transport wine locally, a wine carrier tote or insulated wine carrier might be best. These protect bottles when you carry them with you or keep them cool for picnics or BBQs. We share recommendations for each of these options below.

How Many Bottles Are You Carrying?

The most important of these questions come down to how many wine bottles you pack or travel with regularly. If you plan on packing six or 12 bottles on a regular basis, then it is worth it to invest in a quality wine luggage carrier or suitcase. Particularly from a reputable brand that will last for years to come. If you only pack wine on occasion, then some of the more casual options are probably best for you.

FAQS – HOW TO PACK WINE BOTTLES

When talking about shipping or packing a case of wine, people often start by asking how many bottles of wine are there in a case. In the US, a case of wine often includes 12 bottles. In Europe, though, the standard is six bottles in a case.

There are a couple of rules when it comes to wine transport into the US. I spoke above about the liquid limitations in the US, which are the same as much of the rest of the world. According to the TSA, for alcohol that has below 24% ABV (alcohol by volume) there is no limit on how much you can carry in your checked luggage. This includes wine, which is normally no more than 15% ABV. For alcohol that is between 24-70%, there is a limit of five liters per person. The average bottle of alcohol is normally 750ml. The ABV of most rum, gin, vodka, whisky , etc. falls within this range.  That said, there might be tax charged on anything over one liter according to the US Customs And Border Patrol. If they stop you at the airport you might need to pay $1 or $2 per liter for wine, but possibly more for liquors.

In the past, travelers could bring wine on a plane. Today, it’s only possible to travel with a wine bottle in checked luggage, with one exception. When traveling internationally, it is possible to purchase wine at an airport’s duty-free shop. The wine will be sealed in a pre-approved clear plastic bag. This bag then can be carried onboard the plane. Once onboard, neither the bag nor the bottle can be opened.

At first look, I wasn't sure if the outside material is wrinkled but figured out that's how the canvas with wax material will look like. Glasses are plastic and look cheap. It's ok since I was only interested in a small cooler bag to bring to the farmer's market. The partitions are removable which is nice. Michal. SAN JOSE, CA. 2022-11-28 19:11:47

36 Hours in Moscow

wine carrier for travel

By Michael Schwirtz

  • Sept. 29, 2010

POST-PERESTROIKA, Moscow evoked a giant college dormitory gone wild. Free from oppressive and overbearing Soviet leaders, Muscovites set upon their city with freshman-like zeal, indulging in the fruits of capitalism, hangovers be damned. But the current global slowdown, which knocked some of the sparkle out of Russia’s economic growth, also appears to have injected a bit of maturity — and perhaps even some sobriety — into a city where subtlety once seemed taboo. There is, however, plenty of debauchery left, so bring your tight leather trousers and leopard-print hot pants, if that’s your thing. But those with more refined tastes will also find a more subdued sense of chic.

4 p.m. 1) CHOCOLATE FACTORY

One of the city’s cooler new scenes was once its sweetest. On an island across from the Kremlin, the Krasny Oktyabr, a red-brick chocolate factory from the 19th century, was recently converted into a modish cultural complex with galleries, lecture halls and cafes. Top galleries include the Lumiere Brothers Center of Photography (3 Bolotnaya Naberezhnaya, building 1; 7-495-228-9878; lumiere.ru), one of the few places dedicated to the preservation and study of Soviet and Russian photography. Between shows, grab coffee or a beer and a snack at Blogistan (6 Bersenevskaya Naberezhnaya, building 3; 7-910-429-4644; blogistan.ru), a new subterranean cafe adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and local artwork and stocked with various board games.

6 p.m. 2) OLD MOSCOW

If it’s not too cold, walk across the Patriarchs Bridge, a new footbridge where newlyweds affix padlocks in a Russian marriage tradition. Offering spectacular views of the Kremlin, the bridge links the chocolate factory to the gold-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which was built in the 1990s as a replica of the original demolished under Stalin. For a glimpse of pre-revolutionary Moscow, continue to Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street and stop into Kvartira 44 (22/2 Bolshaya Nikitskaya; 7-495-691-7503; kv44.ru/bolshaya-nikitskaya.html). Popular with the artistic intelligentsia, the family-owned bar and restaurant offers inexpensive drinks (and food), with beers starting at 130 rubles, about $4.30 at 30 rubles to the dollar, and shots of Stolichnaya for 80 rubles. The piano bar on the top floor turns raucous around midnight. If there’s no room, head across the street to Mayak (19/13 Bolshaya Nikitskaya; 7-495-691-7449), which is owned by the same family.

9 p.m. 3) BEETS AND CHOCOLATE

Back at the chocolate factory, Art Strelka (14 Bersenevskaya Naberezhnaya, building 5; 7-495-771-7417; strelkainstitute.com) is a new hangout where the city’s glitterati deign to mingle with the grungy bohemian crowd that pours into the bar after film viewings and art lectures given on the premises. The food is eclectic: gazpacho and cold beet-root soup, steaks and paella, and (of course) chocolate in the form of a warm, gooey brownie. Prices for food and drinks are reasonable with a dinner for two, plus wine and great cocktails costing about 4,000 rubles.

Midnight 4) GRUNGE AND GLAM

Moscow night life doesn’t really get going until well after midnight, and becomes interesting only much later. For a low-key evening, stay at Art Strelka. If it’s warm enough, bask in the lingering northern sun on the spacious roof deck. Or head downstairs where D.J.’s spin till morning. If you’re feeling flush and need more glam, stop into Rai (9 Bolotnaya Naberezhnaya; 7-495-364-0101; raiclub.ru), a glitzy club on the other side of the island. Best to wear those hot pants if you plan to get in. Pulling up in a Bentley wouldn’t hurt, either.

10 a.m. 5) OLIGARCH ART

Luckily for artsy Muscovites, it has become fashionable for Russia’s billionaires to set up their daughters, wives, girlfriends or mistresses with galleries to keep them occupied. Garage (19A Obraztsova Street; 7-495-645-0520; garageccc.com) is one of the few devoted to modern art, and arguably the coolest. Housed in a former bus depot, it is run by Dasha Zhukova, girlfriend of the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, and the editor of Pop magazine, the British fashion glossy. While most galleries charge admission, ticket prices here are surprisingly proletarian at 300 rubles. Grab coffee and a snack at the gallery’s funky cafe where salads and soups are 150 to 300 rubles.

1 p.m. 6) SONG AND SKATES

When it’s warm, follow the sound of singers rehearsing at the New Opera to the Hermitage Gardens (entrance at 3 Karetny Ryad; mosgorsad.ru), a charming park with cast-iron gazebos and cafes, where locals like to lounge when not at their country houses. There are also frequent outdoor concerts. As the weather gets colder, the terraces come down and ice skating rinks go up. Try the rink on Red Square for a unique view of Russia’s most famous landmark. A session costs 150 to 300 rubles depending on time (gum.ru/katok). Warm up with a drink at the O2 Lounge (3 Tverskaya Street; 7-495-225-8888; ritzcarlton.com/moscow), a chic rooftop bar atop the Ritz-Carlton, with stunning Kremlin views.

7 p.m. 7) GEORGIAN FOOD

Despite Russia’s hostilities with Georgia two years ago, Muscovites still love Georgian food. With its assortment of cheese-filled pastries, grilled meats and spicy soups, Georgian cuisine is for Russians what Mexican food is for Americans. Try the perfectly grilled shashlik or shish kebabs at Dzhondzholi (20/1 Tverskaya Street; 7-495-650-5567), a cavernous restaurant with a large trellised veranda in summer. Or, for the cheesy pies known as khachapuri, head to aptly named Khachapuri (10 Bolshoi Gnezdnikovsky Side Street; 7-495-629-6656; hacha.ru), a relaxed cafe with a mostly Georgian staff and a white-haired piano player with a penchant for jazz standards. A full Georgian feast with wine (a must) costs about 1,500 to 3,000 rubles a person at each restaurant.

Midnight 8) FACTORY CLUBBING

A former natural gas factory, close to Kursky train station, has been transformed into the epicenter of the city’s underground club scene. In addition to housing fashion studios, music stores and galleries, the Arma factory complex (entrance at 5 Nizhny Susalny Side Street; armazavod.ru), has several cutting-edge clubs including Gazgolder (Building 1; 7-985-226-3340; gazgolder.com), Discoteque, (Building 5; 7-495-410-5452; discoteque.ru) and Arma 17 (Building 3A; 7- 495-410-0414; arma17.ru). All are big, loud and funky, with all-night thump-athons featuring European guest D.J.’s, concerts and frequent parties that cater to the city’s growing gay scene. Admission varies. Cocktails are 300 to 500 rubles.

8 a.m. 9) HANGOVER BRUNCH

If you’re clubbing till 6 or 7 in the morning, breakfast can be something of a problem. Luckily several spots around town have been experimenting with what in this city is quite an innovation: brunch. Noor Bar (23 Tverskaya Street; 7-499-130-6030; noorbar.com) is a stylish new cafe on one of Moscow’s main drags where a tasty brunch with fresh-squeezed orange juice and coffee costs less than 1,000 rubles. Another option is Café des Artistes (5/6 Kamergersky Side Street; 7-495-692-4042; artistico.ru), which has a spacious outdoor veranda that’s great for people watching. A set brunch costs a mere 500 rubles.

2 p.m. 10) BACK IN THE U.S.S.R.

Though slowing down a bit, Moscow’s hypercapitalism can still be overwhelming. So if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic for the old centralized economy, take a trip to the All-Russia Exhibition Center (110 Prospect Mira; 7 495-544-3400; vvcentre.ru). Once called the All-Union Exhibition of the Achievements of the People’s Economy, it was built as a monument to the greatness of socialism, though now looks more like a crumbling totalitarian Disney World. Shops selling cheap electronics and beauty supplies fill many of the pavilions where the different Soviet republics once showed off their native industries. Still, with its monumental halls, the park offers a fleeting glimpse of the pomp and outsized grandeur of the U.S.S.R.

Flights to Moscow from the United States have increased in recent years, including new nonstops from New York and Atlanta. A recent Web search found a nonstop flight on Aeroflot, the greatly improved Russian carrier, from Kennedy Airport to Moscow, starting at $604 for travel in October. From the airport, take the convenient Aeroexpress trains (aeroexpress.ru) to the city center. One-way tickets cost 300 rubles, about $10.

Moscow has some of the most expensive hotels in the world, and only a few options for frugal travelers, who might try the Godzillas Hostel (6 Bolshaya Karetnaya Street; 7-495-699-4223; godzillashostel.com). Rates start at 868 rubles for a bed in a 10-room dorm; private rooms are 2,170 rubles.

The well-situated Golden Apple Boutique Hotel (11 Malaya Dmitrovka; 7-495-980-7000; epoquehotels.com/moscow.html) is one of the few boutique hotels in Moscow. Rooms start at 10,000 rubles.

At the upper extreme is the Ritz-Carlton (3 Tverskaya Street; 7-495-225-8888; ritzcarlton.com/moscow). Just steps from the Kremlin, the former Intourist hotel has 334 luxurious rooms starting at 23,000 rubles.

The 36 Hours column on Oct. 3, about Moscow, referred incorrectly to the airline service available between Moscow and Chicago. While there is indeed nonstop service between Moscow and New York and Moscow and Atlanta, there is no longer nonstop service between Moscow and Chicago.

Which airlines offer key benefits for troops? There’s a chart for that

wine carrier for travel

A new government tool aims to clarify the benefits troops and their families can receive from America’s 10 largest airlines to make their air travel easier.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Support Our Troops” dashboard offers a chart comparing each airline’s policies on fee waivers, free luggage and refunds for military families during personal travel , or when travel plans change because of a military order. Four companies — Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines — offer some combination of those perks, according to the chart.

Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines are also included in the roundup but have not committed to provide current troops and their families with additional benefits.

In April, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sent a letter to the CEOs of these 10 largest airlines, urging them to improve their military travel benefits and publicize them more effectively.

The department “appreciates that carriers currently provide active duty service members and their families various military travel benefits,” Buttigieg wrote. “However, these benefits are not consistently detailed in carriers’ public-facing customer service plans, resulting in many service members being unaware of them.”

The travel benefits “often do not fully address the needs of service members who may need to cancel or change personal travel plans due to military directives,” Buttigieg added.

Following the letter, Spirit, Allegiant and Frontier stepped up their existing commitments to troops and families, according to the Department of Transportation.

Six others — Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue and United — declined to make “clear and enforceable” promises of extra benefits, the department said.

Airlines are required to stick to the benefits outlined in their customer service plans, including commitments to care for service members and their families. The department pledges to hold airlines accountable if they fail to do so.

To build the new “Support Our Troops” dashboard, DOT and Pentagon officials collaborated to evaluate airlines on four basic commitments the government believes are the top priorities for troops and families on the go:

  • Whether they waive cancellation fees and ensure full refunds for service members and accompanying family members who cancel travel plans because of a military order or directive (documentation may be required). Three airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they waive change fees for service members and accompanying family members who reschedule flights because of a military order or directive (documentation may be required). Four airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they offer at least one free standard carry-on and at least two free standard checked bags for service members and their accompanying spouse and children, with appropriate identification such as a valid military ID. Four airlines make this commitment.
  • Whether they provide the lowest fare for a flight for immediate family members to visit service members recently injured in the line of duty, with supporting documentation. Two airlines make this commitment.

Two airlines — Allegiant and Spirit — pledge to provide all four benefits.

Airlines might offer additional perks to troops and their families, but for those benefits to be reflected on the dashboard, the airlines are required to make those commitments in their customer service plan and provide them to all service members, the department said in a release.

The dashboard applies to current members of the military who are serving or may be called to serve, and who hold a current military ID. That includes members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and reserve components; cadets of the military academies and the Merchant Marine Academy; the U.S. Public Health Service’s Commissioned Corps and Ready Reserve Corps; and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s officer corps.

More information is available on the airlines’ websites or by contacting customer service agents.

The military community can also compare prices and snag discounts on upcoming travel through the Defense Department’s American Forces Travel website , which offers deals on flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and travel packages, and event tickets.

Your Roads. Their Freedom.

Every year, millions of men, women, and children are held against their will and trafficked into forced labor and commercial sex. While on your roads, you could be the key to their freedom.

Access Campaign Resources

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) "Your Roads, Their Freedom" campaign seeks to raise awareness of human trafficking in the commercial motor vehicle (CMV) industry. This effort aims to educate and empower CMV drivers and other transportation-industry employees to recognize the signs of human trafficking and report the crime to authorities.

Human trafficking is a crime that involves the use of force , fraud , or coercion to obtain labor or a commercial sex act. All commercial sex involving a minor is legally considered human trafficking, regardless of the use of force, fraud, or coercion.

Don't overlook human trafficking victims on your roads - learn the signs to stay aware and prepared.

How Do I Report Human Trafficking?

Commercial motor vehicle professionals like you are on the front lines in the fight against human trafficking. You might be able to spot the signs of this crime during your time on the job, since human traffickers often use bus stations, truck stops, rest areas, and travel centers to recruit and move victims.

Be willing to take a second look, trust your instincts, and make the confidential call or text. Real-time reports help local authorities intervene quicker. Some people tend not to report over the fear of being wrong—that should never be considered.

If you see (or suspect) any indicators of human trafficking, assess the situation.  Do not attempt to confront a suspected trafficker or engage with a victim.  Instead, please contact local law enforcement directly. Report to:

  • 9-1-1, if someone is in immediate danger .
  • Call 888-373-7888 or text HELP or INFO to BeFree (233733). (Texto 233733 o BEFREE)

  • Follow your company’s reporting policy if they have one in place.

When describing the suspected human trafficking situation, describe specifically what you observed, including:

  • Who  or  what  you saw (physical identifiers, nicknames overheard).
  • When  you saw it (date and time).
  • Where  it occurred (where you noticed the suspicious activity and any movement, if applicable).

What Counts as a Personal Item on a Flight?

By Blane Bachelor

A passenger waiting for departure in the airport lounge with their cabin luggage all gates sign hanging from the ceiling

It’s a common scenario while boarding a crowded flight: Flight attendants start Tetris-ing suitcases, backpacks, briefcases, jackets, and other items into overhead bins, trying to make sure there’s room for everyone’s luggage. A key piece of the what-fits-where puzzle is the personal item, which generally refers to the small purse , backpack , or tote bag that airlines allow passengers to carry on board for free—and which must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

But with packed flights on the horizon as the holiday season approaches, and more travelers trying to avoid paying checked-bag fees (along with the risk of the airline losing said checked bag), it’s essential for fliers to understand airline rules around personal items—and remember common courtesy when it comes to flight attendants, fellow passengers, and shared spaces on the aircraft. Here’s what you need to know about personal items for your next flight.

What counts as a personal item?

  • Does a pet carrier count?
  • What are the guidelines from major US airlines?
  • What about low-budget airlines?
  • What are the best personal items for travel?

Almost universally, carriers allow passengers to bring onboard a personal item like a purse, backpack, or briefcase, at no additional charge. This item is in addition to the free carry-on piece , such as a small wheeled suitcase, allowed by most major airlines (except, generally, on the cheapest fare class such as basic economy).

Except for mobility devices (such as crutches, canes, and wheelchairs) and items like car seats, personal items must be able to fit under the seat in front of you—a specification airlines clearly state on their websites. “A well understood, and accepted by the majority of airlines, definition of a personal item is a bag that can be stored under the seat in front of you,” explains Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor , a Boston-based passenger claims management company. Radchenko also says that the exact dimensions can differ between airlines.

There are some notable exceptions to the personal item rule as well. Most major US carriers don’t count kid-specific items such as diaper bags, strollers, and car seats (the latter to be used onboard) as a personal item. In addition, most airlines allow passengers to bring extras—duty free purchases, food and drink bought after clearing the security line, and jackets, coats, or umbrellas, for example—that don’t count toward their personal item. And that’s where things can get complicated, especially on full flights.

“Often passengers will arrive with a suitcase, personal items, coats, and sometimes even shopping bags,” says Josephine Remo , a Copenhagen-based former flight attendant with Scandinavian Airlines. “Obviously, all of that does not fit under the seat.”

Cue a scenario sure to happen more often as the holiday travel season ramps up: flight attendants removing personal items like small backpacks, jackets, or shopping bags from the overhead bins and requesting owners to place them under the seat in front of them. “In general, passengers need to understand that the overhead bins are for everyone and no one is entitled to a certain amount of space,” Remo says. If you're boarding with more than one personal item, know that you'll likely need to condense your belongings to fit on your person or under the seat in front of you—additional overhead space is not guaranteed.

Does a pet carrier count as a personal item?

It depends on the airline, but generally, most major US airlines allow a pet carrier as a piece of carry-on luggage. But the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you (meaning your second bag may have to go in the overhead compartment), and passengers must make a reservation ahead of time, as most airlines have limits on the number of pets traveling in the cabin. There’s also usually an additional fee.

What are the guidelines for major US carriers?

American requires personal items to have dimensions less than 18" x 14" x 8". Good news for travelers flying basic economy on American: The carrier has announced those fares now come with one carry-on for free, in addition to a personal item, to all destinations.

Delta does not list specific dimension requirements for personal items on its website, but like other airlines, requires them to fit under the seat in front of you.

All JetBlue fares include a personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you and must not exceed 17" 13" x 8." Passengers with Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, and Mint fares can bring a carry-on bag (space permitting) that fits in the overhead bin, plus a personal item. The airline also specifies that any additional or larger carry-on bags brought to the gate will incur a fee ($65 for the first or second checked bag) and need to be checked.

Blue Basic fares only include one personal item. There are a few exceptions, however: Mosaic members; travelers on a JetBlue transatlantic flight; those who combine a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting); active US military; and unaccompanied minors.

Southwest allows a personal item for all passengers such as a purse, small backpack, food container, or laptop. The carrier does not specify the required dimensions of personal items, but states the item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Personal items on United flights must not exceed total dimensions of 17" x 10" x 9". United has an online baggage fee calculator to estimate costs to check a bag, noting that it’s cheaper to pay for these fees ahead of time.

What about personal items on budget airlines and low-cost carriers?

The personal item issue gets a bit trickier when it comes to budget carriers, which generally allow passengers one free personal item but charge for full-size carry-on luggage. Spirit Airlines, for example, has a range of fees for a carry-on beyond the personal item included in ticket prices. But, as its website notes, if you know you’ll have a larger carry-on bag, it’s advisable to pay during the booking process to avoid paying more later in the game (like a recent $99 at-the-airport carry-on fee we found on the carrier’s “Spirit Bag-O-Tron” baggage calculator ).

Not surprisingly, passengers adamant about not paying such hefty fees sometimes try to pass off larger bags as personal items. While social media is full of viral videos showing space-saving tips for carry-on luggage, some travelers take their packing hacks even further by stuffing travel pillows with clothes or making a small purchase in the airport and then using the store bag to fill with additional items, since airport purchases and duty free items are technically allowed by most carriers. However, travelers who egregiously flout an airline’s policy on personal items should proceed with caution, Radchenko advises.

“We have been made aware of instances where passengers have tried to pass off larger bags as personal items, which we strongly advise against,” he says. “Airlines have safety obligations to meet in terms of the size of bags that can be placed in seating areas, and they take these obligations seriously. Trying to get away with using a large bag as a personal item can result in passengers having to pay high on-the-day prices for an additional cabin or hold item, which they will also not be able to access easily, or at all, during a flight.”
