No person will be denied admission to the university or to any of its programs or activities (either academic or non-academic, curricular or extracurricular) because of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status, or relationship to employees of this university.

Visiting the campus

The Admissions Office provides several visit opportunities including campus tours, Admissions Information Sessions, Campus Close-Ups, and individual appointments for prospective first year, transfer, graduate, and international students.

Tours of the campus are conducted Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. when school is in session. Summer term tours are at 11:00 a.m. only. All scheduled 75-minute walking tours originate from the Admissions Office in the Student Union.

Admissions Information Sessions are one-hour presentations by an admissions counselor designed to provide an overview of UWL and the first year admissions process. These sessions are followed by a 75-minute walking tour of campus, led by a member of the Vanguard organization. Admissions Information Sessions are available on selected dates during the fall and spring semesters and daily in July and August.

Campus Close-Ups are held five times during the academic year. Campus Close-Ups provide prospective first year students and families the opportunity to learn more about UW-La Crosse, including our academic programs, financial aid, and the admissions process. Members of the Vanguard organization lead a panel discussion about campus life, and the day concludes with a 75-minute walking tour of campus led by a current student. The only cost for attending Campus Close-Up is lunch. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.

Individual appointments with admissions counselors are available from September through June and are designed for prospective first year students who are unable to attend an Admissions Information Session or a Campus Close-Up. 

Individual appointments with a transfer admissions counselor are recommended for transfer students who have not yet applied for admission. The appointment will include information about the application process and admission guidelines. Please note: Admitted transfer students who have questions regarding registration and academic advising are encouraged to contact the dean's office of the college to which they are assigned.

Over the years we have visited countless towns and cities in the upper Midwest , probably too many to count. La Crosse is by far one of our favorites. Our most recent trip to La Crosse was just the two of us. No kids. Just adult fun!

The combination of a walkable and vibrant downtown , diverse indoor and outdoor activities , high-quality lodging , and its location on the Mississippi River makes it a must-visit Wisconsin town.

Things to Do in La Crosse – Hiking, Biking, and Paddling

La Crosse is located in Western Wisconsin’s driftless area and is popular with outdoor enthusiasts . It is easy to understand why!

The area hosts countless public parks and a sprawling network of interconnected bike trails . The only downside? It will take more than a long weekend to experience it all!

Island Outdoors  rents kayaks, canoes, and SUPs in the summer abd ice houses, cross country skis, and snowshoes in the winter . They are a great option if you do not own your own equipment or, like us, tend to plan last minute and forget to bring it all along!

Grandad Bluff Park

Grandad Bluff Park provides scenic views of downtown La Crosse from the top of the bluffs. On a clear day you can see Minnesota and Iowa! Stop by Alpine Inn or Bluffside Tavern for a quick bite or pack a romantic picnic lunch and enjoy the views.

La Cross River Trail

The La Crosse River State Trail stretches 22-miles from downtown La Crosse to Sparta, WI. It is best exprerienced walking and biking in the summer or cross-country skiing in the winter.

The trail leads right into downtown La Crosse’s bar and restaurant scene!

Great River State Trail

The Great River State Trail runs 24 miles along the banks of the Mississippi River , offering breathtaking views of the entire river valley. It links up to the La Crosse River State Trail via a short bike through town. .

Another option is to drive the Great River Road, which follows the Mississippi River in its entirety.

Riverside Park & Riverside International Friendship Gardens

Riverside Park is the backbone of the downtown area. The park hosts many events, including a spectacular July fireworks display !

Adjacent to this park is the Riverside International Friendship Gardens, which houses many different gardens inspired by international cultures , including a very cool Chinese garden.

Both are on the river and a short walk from downtown and most hotels and bars .

Goose Island County Park

Goose Island County Park is located three miles south of downtown. This public park has over five miles of forested hiking and biking paths , picnic areas, a public beach , a campground store selling refreshments and canoe and kayak rentals, and camp sites. 

The park is perfect spot if you are looking to avoid hotels and camp for the weekend.

Pettibone Park and Beach

Pettibone Park is mostly known for its expansive beach which can be seen from downtown , however it also offers picnic shelters, volleyball , trails, disc golf , fishing , and plenty of open space.

It is the perfect place to escape the heat and enjoy stunning views of the city.

Mount La Crosse Ski Hill

Mount La Crosse is home to the steepest vertical ski slope in Wisconsin ! Enjoy their 18 trails, terrain park, night skiing, and award-winning “Après-ski” bar. Definitely a highlight if visiting in the winter months!

Hixon Forest

Hixon Forest has a ton of hiking trails and four designated parking areas. Some of the trails will take you to the top of Granddad Bluff and are not for the feint of heart.

The interconnectedness of the hiking and multi-use trail system in La Crosse is amazing . You can start at Riverside Park in the heart of downtown La Crosse and make your way to almost any park with hiking paths in the area.

La Crosse Loggers Baseball

The L a Crosse Loggers provide a thrilling baseball experience close to downtown.

The outdoor field, called the Lumberyard , offers close seats and plenty of action for baseball fans. Most of the players are college athletes hoping to get noticed by MLB scouts.

While not technically inside, you can stay relatively dry and enjoy great baseball up-close-and-personal.

Jump Start Adventure Park

Jump Start Adventure Park isn’t just for kids. It is a great indoor option for adults as well. It isn’t just wall-to-wall bouncing – there are foam pits and dodgeball courts too.

Adults will love their performance olympic trapolines and ninja warrior course.

Rivoli Theater & Pizzeria

Rivoli Theater & Pizzeria is a classic movie theater experience. They serve excellent pizza and boast an extensive beer selection ! Step back in time and enjoy a riveting movie experience.

During recent renovations, they even found a 90-year-old mural  hiding in plain sight!

Roller Skating and Bowling

Looking for some old-school fun ? Check out High Roller Skating Center for an afternoon of rollerskating , or Pla-More Lanes for some competitive bowling .

Both are excellent and would be a great combination with a movie at Rivoli Theater and Pizzeria.

Educational and Cultural Attractions in La Crosse

There are many Educational and cultural attractions in La Crosse. We are always amazed at the options given a total population of roughly 50,000 . Being a college town definitely has its perks !

In addition to the list below, there are a ton of family-friendly options like the Children’s Museum, kid-friendly restaruants, and parks aplenty.

One of the best ways to see a city and learn about its local history is with an organized tour! La Crosse has a couple of options:

• La Crosse Queen Riverboat tours
• La Crosse Segway Tours through downtown and beyond
• Historic trolley tour

We enjoyed a Segway tour on our last trip. It was a fun and unique way to see the city, even if it took some getting used to!

The La Crosse Queen Cruise is probably the most popular option and the boat takes of right from Riverside Park.

The International Owl Center

Nature lovers will enjoy the International Owl Center . It is an owl sanctuary with interactive exhibits, events, and a gift shop.

It can be paired with a day of birding at Van Loon State Wildlife Area or Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge, two popular birdwatching destinations.

Dahl Auto Museum – A Trip Down Memory Lane

The Dahl Auto Museum is walking distance from downtown La Crosse celebrates the Dahl family’s 100 years of involvement in the auto industry. It houses classic cars and memorabilia and is definitely worth a stop!

World’s Largest Six Pack

OK, this is probably not the most educational experience, but it is a huge local landmark. The World’s Largest Six Pack is made with six colossal beer tanks from the 1960s. It is a hometown icon and it is rumored that City Brewing is going to repaint them in 2024/2025.

Pearl Street Books – A Two Story Reading Experience

Pearl Street Books is a quaint independent bookstore with two levels of literary fun. I tend to have a problem when visiting used bookstores, one that results in far too many books coming home. Pearl Street Books did not disappoint!

Pump House Regional Arts Center

Pump House Regional Arts Center , nestled in Downtown La Crosse, serves as a hub for the local artists’ community. You’ll discover works by regional artists and various performances and workshops throughout the year . 

The goal of the center is to foster understanding and appreciation for the various forms of art in the community.

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a place of prayer and an educational center offering guided tours and educational programs .

The interactive exhibits provide insight into the history and significance of various religious symbols and rituals, and the walking trails are breathtaking.

Oktoberfest USA isn’t La Crosse’s only claim to fame! The City is also renowned for its vibrant local festivals and non-beer related special events .

Rudy’s Drive-In Restaurant

Don’t forget to make a stop at Rudy’s Drive-In Restaurant . Their unique roller skating carhop service adds extra charm to the overall dining experience. The menu features classic American fare and their famous root beer float.

Are you looking for free romantic things to do in La Crosse this summer? Look no further than Pettibone Park Beach! You can’t beat the view of the sunset over the Mississippi River.

It’s a gorgeous scene. Nothing feels as peaceful and serene as sitting on the beach with a good friend or sweetheart, watching the waves roll in and listening to them lap against the shore. You can feel yourself go from stress to relaxation in just a few minutes while taking in that incredible sight.

The beach has lots of space for everyone to spread out and enjoy whatever they like. You can read a book, build sandcastles, swim, or play frisbee. It also has a volleyball court if you want to play those sports.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott La Crosse Downtown is an excellent option for spending a weekend at the beach. The hotel offers free parking, breakfast, an indoor pool, Wi-Fi, a fitness center, and many other facilities. The hotel is also within walking distance of Pettibone Park Beach.

11. Ride Your Bike On The La Crosse River State Trail

La Crosse is a great place to go bike riding . The La Crosse River State Trail is one of the best places in the city. It’s just about 22 miles long and goes through some incredible scenery. 

It passes through several types of terrain, including wooded areas and wetlands. The surrounding area is green and lush during the summer months, making the whole experience feel more like a getaway from the city than a typical bike ride along city streets.

The trail is mainly crushed limestone. So it’s not too hard on the knees (unless you have terrible knees). But it does have some inclines and declines that you’ll want to be aware of before you ride it if you’re not used to biking on hills.

12. Soak In Some Art At The Pump House Regional Arts Center

Soaking in some art at the Pump House Regional Arts Center is one of the best things to do in La Crosse. It’s a performing and visual arts center with many galleries and stages. 

The exhibits here change frequently and include many different artists and mediums. The Pump House features artists from the area and around the country. It gives you plenty of space to take in their work. 

I’d recommend checking out The Pump House if you’re looking for an opportunity to get creative with your friends or family. It’s open from Monday to Saturday and has fun events throughout the year, such as Artspire. Don’t forget to check out the art!

13. Visit The Shrine Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe

With its fascinating history and beautiful architecture, it is a place that will make your visit to La Crosse complete. If you are looking for a way to experience more of the culture and beauty of La Crosse, this is a great place to start.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a religious pilgrimage site that attracts visitors from all over. The shrine has a long history and draws a crowd due to its rich aesthetic, beautiful landscape, and the excitement of being on an adventure.

As we enter the shrine, we are greeted by a large room with statues, crosses, altars, and devotional areas full of prayerful information on the life of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Only when we turn around can we see the true magnificence of this sacred place: there stands an enormous statue of Our Lady holding three unborn children in her arms.

Several types of accommodation are available near the shrine, from basic rooms to suites and villas. Wilson Schoolhouse Inn is also an excellent option for families visiting the shrine over a weekend!

The schoolhouse offers many amenities, including free parking, air conditioning, a TV, free Wi-Fi access, a washer & dryer, and a heater.

14. Enjoy A Winter Sleigh Ride At Sunset Riding Stables

For those looking for kids’ activities in La Crosse during winter, Sunset Riding Stables is an ideal place. They offer both hayrides and sleigh rides year-round! With over 229 acres of wooded bluffs, bonfires, and horse-drawn sleigh rides, you’ll never run out of things to do. 

Sunset also has an indoor lounge that can be rented for parties or meetings. It has a large fireplace and picnic tables where you can relax. Sunset offers hayrides, sleigh rides, trail rides, boarding, and lessons.

Their staff are friendly and helpful, so you’ll never feel like you don’t belong here. I highly recommend this place if you want to leave the city for a few hours.

15. Explore Copeland Park

Copeland Park is an old, historic baseball field that serves as the home of the La Crosse Loggers. This beautiful place has been around for almost 100 years. The park was built in 1909 and has since been renovated to modern standards.

The current capacity is nearly 4,000 people. It’s the perfect size for a neighborhood park that provides the right amenities and activities for visitors looking to get outdoors.

It has everything you could want. Baseball and softball fields, batting cages, tennis courts, lighted basketball courts, a shelter with restrooms and electricity, an open-air shelter, an ice rink, a splash pad, picnic tables, barbecues, and just a bunch of green space. 

Sure, the amenities leave something to be desired at times, but overall, this place has everything you could ever want for fun in La Crosse. Fans of all ages can enjoy this historic ballpark and cheer on our beloved Loggers!

16. Climb Mount La Crosse

The La Crosse, WI area offers plenty of things to do for those looking for fun things. But if you’re looking for a bit more of an adventure, then consider climbing Mount La Crosse. It’s only a short drive from La Crosse. It’s easy to get there and offers fantastic city and river valley views when you reach the top.

Mt. La Crosse has 18 slopes serviced by three double chair lifts and a single rope tow. The mountain offers a full-service rental shop with convenient hours for renting equipment, waxing skis, and tuning boards. 

Whether you’re an experienced skier, snowboarder, or just learning the ropes, Mt. La Crosse has slopes and trails catering to all skiing and snowboarding experience levels.

For groups visiting Mt. La Crosse Ski Area, this 3BR 3BA rental property is perfect. It offers three bedrooms and three bathrooms and comfortably sleeps up to eleven people. The house offers a TV, swimming pool, fireplace, WIFI, heater, parking, etc.

17. Visit The Dahl Auto Museum

Visiting the Dahl Auto Museum is a must for anyone who loves cars . The museum celebrates the Dahl family’s involvement in auto dealerships for five generations. Although it isn’t a big museum, the Dahl Auto Museum is an excellent place that displays the evolution of cars over the years. 

It’s pretty cool seeing how cars have changed over the years, especially when you start thinking about what features were developed and then dropped as time went on. 

The museum has some classic cars over 100 years old and others more recent but still classic models. Most of the vehicles are in excellent condition, and the history gives you the feeling of returning to a simpler time when cars started. The highlight of the museum is the collection of Fords and Dahl.

The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. There is an admission fee for those aged nine and older and free admission for children under eight accompanied by a paying adult.

18. Ride Along The Great River State Trail

The Great River Trail is a 24-mile-long trail along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin. The course is open for walking and biking during the warmer months. It’s also perfect for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing during the colder months. 

The trail travels through some of the most scenic parts of Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. It runs through the prairies and backwaters of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The trail is primarily flat and suitable for walking and biking. 

The trail links to the La Crosse River State Trail via a short road route in La Crosse. So you can loop from La Crosse to Trempealeau to Chippewa Falls to Onalaska, then back to La Crosse. The Great River State Trail welcomes nearly 70,000 visitors yearly who enjoy the scenic trail along the river marshes, hardwood forests, and wildlife preserves.

This small college town is located in the Driftless Region, known for its towering bluffs and unique landscape unlike anywhere else in the upper midwest.

La Crosse is located just 2-½ hours (160 miles) southeast of the Twin Cities and about the same distance northwest of Madison. The city sits along the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin side. The drive to La Crosse from Minneapolis is one of my favorites in the region. Follow the Great River Road along the Mississippi River through adorable towns like Stockholm, Nelson and Red Wing!

La Crosse is part of the Driftless Region, an area that was never covered by glaciers. Instead, melting snow from nearby glaciers was funneled to the Gulf of Mexico through what is today known as the Mississippi River. As a result, the iconic bluffs surrounding the city and throughout the Driftless Region make La Crosse a unique and beautiful place to visit.

Best Places to Stay in La Crosse WI

La Crosse has no shortage of places to stay. In the downtown area you will find nearly every major chain hotel in addition to boutique and regional hotels. La Crosse has a very walkable downtown, so I recommend looking at lodging that is walking distance to the shops and restaurants.

This all-suite hotel has an incredible location just steps from historic downtown La Crosse (and the city’s annual Oktoberfest celebration). Each room has a kitchenette and many have bedrooms separate from the living area, making this an ideal place to stay for families, groups, or those who want to prepare their own meals. 

If you’ve never stayed at GrandStay, they are known for having a cozy cabin vibe. The lobby has comfy seating areas around a fireplace. Hot continental breakfast is included!

Looking for a bit of luxury in La Crosse? Book a room at the gorgeous The Charmant Hotel, also located steps from historic downtown La Crosse. They have many types of rooms to choose from, but all are a combination of modern finishes with old world charm. I love the brick walls and classic decor.

Fun Things to do in La Crosse Wisconsin

There are so many fun things to do in La Crosse that the hardest part will be deciding which to include on your itinerary!

Fuel up for a day of exploring with a stop at The Root Note for coffee and a bite to eat. The menu features signature drinks like the earl grey latte as well as staple coffee and tea drink options. I love that they make their syrups and flavors in-house!

The food menu is excellent! On the lighter side, try the house-made biscuit that comes with cinnamon and honey butter. For something more substantial and savory, try the classic crepe. 

Pro Tip: Come later in the day for The Root Note’s happy hour, which includes non-alcoholic drink options.

Explore the La Crosse region on two wheels on the Great River State Trail. The Lytle’s Landing trailhead is located in nearby Onalaska and is one of the best bike trails near La Crosse. If you ride northwest from this trailhead you will almost immediately cross a series of beautiful bridges as you cross through the Upper Mississippi River National Fish & Wildlife Refuge. This is a great place to go birdwatching!

Pro Tip: A permit is required when biking the Great River State Trail. Learn more about day and annual passes here .

Need a bike? Not a problem! The friendly folks at Wrench & Roll in La Crosse will get you set up with a regular or e-bike rental! They did an awesome job making sure my friend and I had bikes that fit our bodies correctly. If you don’t have a bike rack, the front wheel of the regular bikes comes off easily, allowing them to fit into the back of most SUV’s and other vehicles. 

Pro Tip: Reservations are not required at Wrench & Roll, but I recommend calling in advance. If you do, they’ll have your bike waiting for you when you arrive! 

Whether you stay at The Charmant Hotel or not, I highly recommend having a cocktail at the rooftop terrace for an awesome view of La Crosse! They have a creative menu of craft cocktails and light bites. The pimento cheese spread was delicious!

The rooftop terrace is partially covered and has a firepit for cooler evenings. The rooftop may not be open in winter, so be sure to check with the hotel before planning your visit.

While we’re talking about awesome views of La Crosse, don’t forget about Grandad Bluff! The view from the top of this 600-foot tall bluff is incredible, overlooking the city of La Crosse, the Mississippi River valley and the surrounding area. 

There is a paved road up to a small parking area near the top of the bluff. There is a covered shelter and restrooms that are open in the warmer months. If you want to do some of the best hiking in La Crosse, there are several trailheads along the road up to Grandad Bluff.

Pro Tip: This is the perfect place to visit for sunset!

Not only does La Crosse Distilling Co have great spirits and craft cocktails in their tasting room, they create all of that with sustainability in mind! They are a geothermal-powered distillery that uses organic ingredients, partners with local family farmers and incorporates sustainable practices into all that they do. 

Their space in historic downtown La Crosse is modern with tons of natural light as well as outdoor seating. I love all of the fresh plants throughout the indoor seating area! 

Pro Tip: The smoked wings and smoked trout dip are both delicious!

Spend some time strolling through this beautiful collection of gardens that was built to honor the sister city relationships of the towns and cities that make up the La Crosse Region. The sister cities are located in China, Germany, France, Russia, Norway, Ireland and Cameroon. Each garden is unique with whimsical and thoughtful touches from each destination.

The gardens are located in Riverside Park along the Mississippi River. There is no entry free and they are open to the public. 

Pro Tip: Find a short audio tour for each garden on their website to learn more!

One thing I love to do when visiting small towns and cities is to stroll through the shops in the downtown or Main Street area. La Crosse has so many fun businesses to checkout, all within walking distance of each other in the historic downtown area.

Drift Mercantile is the perfect place to find a gift for someone special or yourself. It’s a modern take on a classic general store with all kinds of cute Wisconsin-inspired items, home decor, greeting cards, t-shirts, cheese curds (obviously) and more!

While you’re there, be sure to also checkout Curated, which is a boutique filled with linens, pillows, furniture and home decor. Their selection of whimsical and fun throw pillows is hard to pass up! 

Another favorite is Larson’s General , which has all the essentials for living a low-waste and sustainable lifestyle. Duluth Trading Company, Willow Boutique and other stores are also worth stopping in!

Grab a coffee, sit and enjoy the outdoor patio at Grounded Patio Cafe . On the menu are the standard coffee options as well as fresh baked good, baked oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches and yogurt. The breakfast burrito was wonderful and filled with protein for a day of exploring!

Did you know that La Crosse has a literal chateau? It’s beautiful! And, down a spiral staircase inside is La Cave . This charming wine and cocktail bar is cozy, inviting, and the perfect place for a nightcap. The main room has a long narrow bar, but off to the sides are two rooms lined with bottles of wine. The bar itself is the centerpiece, built into the stone walls of the chateau’s basement.

My favorite part about La Cave is the bartenders! They were so fun to talk to and clearly take pride in creating unique cocktails. Ask for something special and see what they create for you!

Hit the trails and explore the bluffs in nearby Hixon Forest for some more incredible views of the Driftless Region. This is among the best places to go hiking near La Crosse. I recommend the Miller Bluff Trail in Lower Hixon Forest. This 1.0 mile out-and-back trail (2.0 miles total) will take you to an overlook with views of La Crosse, Grandad Bluff, and the MIssissippi River Valley.

To get here, navigate to the “Hixon Forest Parking Lot” to reach the trailhead. In the parking lot there is a large sign with maps of the trails. 

If you bike along the Great River State Trail, as suggested, its likely that you will go through a portion of the Upper Mississippi River National Fish & Wildlife Refuge. Not far from the Lytle’s Landing trailhead is the Visitor Center. Here you can learn about the wildlife, migration patterns and more about the Driftless Region through interpretive signs and displays. 

On the property there are several short hiking trails that are open year-round from dawn to dusk at no cost. So, even if the Visitor Center is closed, I recommend stopping to explore the trails and learn more about the wildlife in the area.

No trip to Wisconsin is complete with a stop at a lakeside bar for some form of walleye or cheese curds. Find all of the above at Red Pines Bar & Grill on the shore of nearby Lake Onalaska. 

Enjoy lunch or dinner on the massive outdoor patio, the heated patio or indoors. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, burgers, pizza and pan-fried or fried walleye dinner. Try the walleye reuben for a unique bite!

Pro Tip: On Saturday afternoons in the summer, find live music on the patio! There is also a sand volleyball court and assortment of lawn games. 

Be sure to stop at 4 Sisters Wine Bar & Tapas , overlooking Riverside Park near historic downtown La Crosse. Build-your-own wine flight or purchase wine by the glass or bottle. Each wine flight comes with a palate cleanser of cheese cubes and crackers.

If wine isn’t your thing, 4 Sisters also has unique flights with different flavors of mules, mojitos and even bourbon!

The tapas menu is impressive, with options for all kinds of dietary needs. I recommend the ahi tuna bites and avocado blackened shrimp. They also have entrees if you want something more substantial! 

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you need to stop in at The Pearl Ice Cream Parlor . Choose from theri delicious assortment of homemade ice creams in a cone or a cup. The Pearl is adjacent to Drift Mercantile if you want to stop after you shop!

This riverside city is meant to be explored on the water. Board The Queen riverboat for a ride along the Mississippi River! Choose from a sightseeing cruise, a Sunday brunch and a pizza cruise. Check the website for their latest schedule as it changes seasonally. 

This 30-ish mile scenic loop takes you through some gorgeous views of bluff country. The loop starts and ends in La Crescent, which is on the Minnesota side of the MIssissippi River from La Crosse. This drive is particularly beautiful in fall!

Stop at Apple Blossom Overlook Park for a short hike to an overlook with a view of La Crosse from above. The hike is very short (~½ mile each way) with a slight change in elevation. If you want more of a hike there is a 1.3 mile loop accessible from the parking area as well. 

Pro Tip: Some adventurous cyclists bike this route. Just be warned that there are some steep up and downhill sections so this will not be for all cyclists.

Whether it’s from the top of the bluffs or the rooftop bars, there are so many fun things to do in La Crosse Wisconsin. This college town has literally something for everyone, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway. Have fun exploring Wisconsin’s Driftless Region!

SIGNATURE SIGHTS OF THE LA CROSSE REGION

Home to breathtaking landscapes, historic monuments and legendary parks, the La Crosse Region boasts a plethora of outstanding sights.

Catch the Best Views

Grandad Bluff

Grandad Bluff  has become not only a destination point for thousands but also a symbol of the beautiful Coulee Region. The 600-ft high bluff overlooks the city of La Crosse. The view of the Mississippi River Valley includes the three states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Wisconsin Trails readers voted this “the most scenic view in the state”. The park features a shelter house, coin-operated binoculars, picnic areas and is the site of the annual Skyrocker`s New Year`s Eve Fireworks Show.

Riverside Park

This monumental landmark park in La Crosse, Riverside Park , is the center of an active community located on the banks of the Mississippi River.  It rests at the confluence of three rivers and Riverside Park is designed for both active lifestyles and for those that want to just watch the river slowly pass by. Home of the delightful La Crosse Queen paddlewheel boat, visitors can take to the water and a Friday evening Pizza Cruise or a daily sight-seeing cruise on the La Crosse Queen.

At the north end of the park, guests can also enjoy strolling through the captivating Riverside International Friendship Gardens.

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe  will forever be a spiritual destination for visitors from all over the world.  The Shrine is nestled in on over 100 acres of God’s Country in the Mississippi River Valley. In addition to the many beautiful chapels, statues, gardens, and devotional areas, the Shrine has a full-service café and gift shop open daily.

Great River Landing & Sunny the Sunfish

The Great River Landing  in Onalaska, WI plays host to the trailhead of the Great River State Trail with showers and locker rooms for bicyclists enjoying the 101 miles of interconnecting state trails. During the winter months, users can enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing. The landing also offers beautiful views of the surrounding area including Lake Onalaska.

A quick drive north of downtown Onalaska along the Great River Road (Hwy 35) takes you to the  Sunny the Sunfish  sculpture and a scenic overlook perched above Lake Onalaska. Take a quick picture with Sunny and then soak in the multifaceted hues over  Lake Onalaska .

Apple Blossom Scenic Drive

At Apple Blossom Scenic Drive in early to Mid-May is the peak season to experience the natural beauty of rolling hills covered in blossoming apple trees. Get excited for spring! Plan to bike or drive the 17-mile route before the season ends! Ride along the bluff-top roads that overlook the Mississippi River and La Crosse, and descend into the Pine Creek Valley for your return trip back to La Crescent, Minnesota.

Wisconsin State Bike Trails & Hixon Forest Trails

Four rail-bed trails spanning nearly 101 miles from Reedsburg, WI, to Marshland, WI, offer some of the best hiking and biking in the region. The trails take you through marshes and valleys, along the rivers, and offer access to several communities, parks, and recreation areas, including Perrot State Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, and the La Crosse River Prairies State Natural Area. Snowmobiles occupy the trails in the winter but they are also open to those looking to cross country ski, snowshoe, or hike. All WI State Bike Trails .

Hixon Forest offers nearly ten miles of hiking and mountain biking trails throughout the wooded bluffs on the east side of La Crosse. Each trail within the park is dog friendly, offers different views of the La Crosse Region, and features various levels of difficulty. The epic trails can be accessed via parking lots, Myrick Park, or Riverside Park in Historic Downtown La Crosse. With access to Grandad Bluff, beautiful views across the Driftless Region and over the Mississippi River Valley and 4 designated overlooks. Ready to explore? Find a Hixon Forest Map here.

Up for a road trip? Enjoy beautiful scenery, access to excellent hiking, fishing, scenic overlooks, and of course the picturesque Mississippi River along the  Wisconsin Great River Road . U.S. Highway 35 covers 250 miles in the state of Wisconsin, from Prescott in the north to Kieler in the south.

Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge

The  Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge  have a Visitor Center on Brice Prairie with many displays and exhibits, a bookstore, and over two miles of trail through a renovated sand prairie. The refuge is 261 miles long, the longest in the nation, and one of the most visited. The Refuge has 96 miles of marked canoe trails. Including the Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail starting at  Lytle’s Landing  on Brice Praire and traveling through the backwaters to  Lake Onalaska .

7 Bridges Road & the Van Loon State Wildlife Area

The historic  McGilvray “7 Bridges” Road  trail is located in the Van Loon State Wildlife Area in Northwest La Crosse County. The trail is 1.8 miles long, one way. It was formerly a County Road which contains a unique combination of five rare bowstring arch truss bridges and one low truss bridge that was adopted from Pierce County. The Van Loon Wildlife area is a globally significant floodplain forest that is notable for its wide variety of wildlife. It is listed under Wisconsin Important Bird Areas and is a great trail to snowshoe or cross country ski.
