Flood-borne diseases are ‘second disaster’ for Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan — At least nine more people have died from waterborne diseases in flood-hit areas of Pakistan , officials said on Tuesday, as actor Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to the South Asian nation to meet people affected by the crisis.

An intense and long monsoon dumped around three times as much rain on Pakistan than on average in recent weeks, causing major flooding that killed 1,559 people, including 551 children and 318 women, according to the disaster management agency.

Officials are warning they now risk losing control of the spread of infections in a dire situation that UNICEF described as “beyond bleak.”

Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the floods are living in the open, and as floodwaters spread over hundreds of miles start to recede — which officials say may take two to six months — stagnant waters have led to diseases like malaria, dengue fever, skin and eye infections and acute diarrhea.

Jolie visited communities affected by flooding in Dadu district, one of the worst-hit areas in southern Pakistan.

She met with several women who are now living in tents, according to international aid organization IRC, which is facilitating the visit. They described their struggles and told her they needed food, water and medical attention.

Jolie, who has dedicated herself to international humanitarian causes for more than a decade, also visited Pakistan after deadly flooding in 2010.

The World Health Organization has said the surge in diseases has the potential for a “second disaster.”

“There is already the diseases outbreak,” said Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan’s planning minister, who is also the head of a national flood response center jointly run by the government and the military.

“We fear it may get out of control,” he told a news conference in Islamabad, the capital.

In Sindh, the region worst hit by the floods, the provincial government said nine people had died of gastroenteritis, acute diarrhea and suspected malaria on Monday, bringing the total number of deaths from diseases to 318 since July 1.

Over 2.7 million people have been treated for waterborne diseases at makeshift or mobile hospitals set up in flood-hit regions since July 1, it said, with 72,000 people treated at these facilities on Monday alone.

Three other provinces have also reported thousands of disease cases.

The influx has overwhelmed Pakistan’s already weak health system. The Sindh provincial government has said that over 1,200 medical facilities are still marooned in floodwater.

Malaria and diarrhea are spreading fast, said Moinuddin Siddique, director at the Abdullah Shah Institute of Health Sciences in the city of Sehwan, which is surrounded by the floodwaters. “We’re overwhelmed,” he told Reuters.

At the news conference, planning minister Iqbal appealed to the affluent members of society to come forward to help the flood relief efforts, and asked medical volunteers to join hands with the government.

He appealed for two million nutrition packs for mothers who are expecting and newborn babies, saying the government was setting up more mobile hospitals and clinics in affected areas.

Record monsoon rains and glacial melt in northern Pakistan triggered the flooding that has affected nearly 33 million people in the South Asian nation of 220 million, sweeping away homes, crops, bridges, roads and livestock in damages estimated at $30 billion. Scientists say the disaster was exacerbated by climate change .

The government says GDP growth will most likely drop to 3 percent from a previous estimate of 5 percent for the 2022-23 financial year.

In what UNICEF described as a situation “beyond bleak,” it said an estimated 16 million children have been affected by the floods, and at least 3.4 million girls and boys remain in need of immediate, lifesaving support.

Gerida Birukila, the UNICEF Pakistan chief field officer in southwestern Balochistan province, described the situation as “utterly heartbreaking.”

The children are surrounded by pools of stagnant water poisoned with fertilizers and feces and swarming with diseases and viruses, sometimes feet away from where they sleep, she told a news briefing in Geneva on Tuesday, according to a statement.

“Many families have no alternative but to drink the disease-ridden water,” she said, adding, “Everywhere we go, we see desperation and despair growing.”

Angelina Jolie visits IRC response in flood-ravaged Pakistan

Islamabad, Pakistan, September 22, 2022 —  The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and its local partner on ground hosted Ms. Angelina Jolie in Pakistan while she was visiting the flood affected areas in Sindh.

Lasting three days, Ms Jolie met with flood-affected communities and witnessed how their lives have been devastated by the ongoing rains. She spoke with women and children, many of whom remain caught in areas inaccessible to humanitarian aid and are at an increased risk of violence and abuse. Elsewhere, families  continue to sleep in camps or makeshift shelters as they wait for additional support and basic lifesaving services.

The IRC and our partner organisations are on the ground in Pakistan, closely monitoring the situation and assessing humanitarian need. We have been providing lifesaving services since early July to flood-affected communities, and have so far reached out to almost 100,000 individuals with support including the distribution of emergency non-food items, dignity and hygiene kits, food baskets, and the establishment of medical camps and safe spaces.

Speaking of her visit, Angelina Jolie, said,

“The devastation in Sindh has been shocking; in all my life, I have never seen anything like this before. Families are sleeping under open skies and have lost everything in these floods.

“Climate change is not only real and it is not only coming - it is very much here. The real tragedy is that Pakistan contributes less than 1% of the world’s carbon footprint and yet millions of people have been displaced or lost loved ones. It is time for the world to wake up to this crisis and take action on climate change - we cannot ignore the consequences any longer.”

Shabnam Baloch, International Rescue Committee Pakistan Director, said,

“We were happy to have the opportunity to host Ms Angelina Jolie and support her in witnessing first hand the impact the floods have had on the lives of people in Pakistan. The IRC hopes that her visit will shine a spotlight on the ongoing situation and prompt world leaders to take decisive action to halt climate change and support countries bearing the brunt of the crisis.”

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) began operations in Pakistan in 1980 in response to the growing number of Afghan refugees. Our teams delivered food, shelter, safety, primary healthcare, education, vocational training, water supply systems, sanitation facilities, and other essential services to the Afghan refugees and host communities. Since then, the IRC now serves a wide group of marginalised, vulnerable, and impoverished groups across the country with public health, environmental health, education, disaster risk reduction, community services, and livelihoods support. In 2020, our teams met the needs of 43 million people under its COVID-19 emergency response.

The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC works in more than 40 countries and in 28 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities. Learn more at www.rescue.org and follow the IRC on Twitter & Facebook .

Angelina Jolie visits Pakistan as it struggles to contain disease outbreaks after devastating floods

Topic: Climate Change

Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood actor and special envoy of the UN Refugee Agency, has toured the worst-affected areas in Pakistan as the country grapples to contain the outbreak of diseases among hundreds of thousands of flood survivors.

Key points:

  • Jolie says time is running out to save the lives of flood victims
  • UNICEF says at least 16 million children have been affected by the floods
  • France is set to host an international conference to gather support for Pakistan

The death toll in the flood-devastated country has reportedly soared to 1,569, according to the National Disasters Management Authority, amid fears many more will die as vast areas of the country remain submerged.

Jolie visited people displaced by the floods with international aid organisation International Rescue Committee [IRC] earlier this week in an effort to raise awareness.

"I've seen those lives who were saved," she said, while adding that without sufficient aid, others "won't be here in the next few weeks, they won't make it".

Her comments, made when visiting the country's flood response centre, were carried on video footage shared by the country's military on Wednesday.

Authorities and aid workers have said more immediate help is needed for displaced families exposed to swarms of mosquitoes and other hazards, such as snake and dog bites.

Sixteen million children affected

Local aid worker in Sindh, Obaid Ullah told the ABC via phone the rains have subsided now but the stranded water was of particular concern, especially for children and pregnant women.

"We are trying our best with all available resources to provide the basics such as food and drinking water, but the measures beyond that such as medicine and hygiene provisions are difficult to manage."

The UN Children Agency, UNICEF, has estimated the number of affected children to be around 16 million.

It said in a statement that children were already suffering from high rates of malnutrition, and poor access to water and sanitation even before the floods.

"Outbreaks of watery diarrhoea, typhoid and malaria are increasing as millions of people sleep in temporary shelters or in the open near stagnating water," it said.

Despite the efforts of the government and local and foreign relief organisations, many people are in dire need of food, shelter, medical assistance and medicines.

With Pakistan's already weak health system and lack of support, displaced families have complained of being forced to drink and cook with unsafe water.

"We know it can sicken us, but what to do? We have to drink it to stay alive," flood victim Ghulam Rasool told local Geo News TV as he stood near where his home was washed away in southern Pakistan.

A historic and intense monsoon, which dumped about three times as much rain as Pakistan's three-decade average, combined with glacial melt to cause unprecedented flooding.

The deluge, which scientists say was exacerbated by climate change, has affected nearly 33 million people in the South Asian nation of 220 million.

It has swept away homes, crops, bridges, roads and livestock in damages estimated at $US30 billion ($45.5 billion).

"I've never seen anything like this ... I'm overwhelmed," said Jolie, who has made several trips to Pakistan including after deadly floods in the country's south in 2010.

Survivors get one meal day

Hailed as a "national hero" for her tireless rescue and relief efforts, Quratulain Wazir, a local government official in the Khyber Pakhtunkwa province, told the ABC via phone flood-affected families were only getting one meal a day due to acute shortages of funds.

"Every day, thousands of women gather outside my home and office, but we do not have enough means to support them," Ms Wazir said.

In viral social media posts, Ms Wazir was seen during the floods clad in traditional Pashtun dress marching through floodwaters, coordinating early warning and relief efforts credited with saving many lives.

She said that as winter approached, it would get even more difficult for the flood victims in the northern parts of the country.

"In my district [Nawshehra] alone, there are over 25,000 flood victims that need help," she said.

Dr Farah Naureen, Mercy Corps' country director for Pakistan, said the aid had been "slow to arrive".

"We need to work in a coordinated manner to respond to their immediate needs," she said in a statement late on Monday, prioritising clean drinking water.

Health and nutrition stand out as the most important needs of the displaced population, she said.

Pakistan's finance ministry said it had approved 10 billion rupees ($63.7 million) for the disaster management agency to use for procuring flood relief supplies and other logistics.

The country's premier, Shahbaz Sharif, sought the attention and help of world leaders at the UN General Assembly where he outlined the devastation caused by the record-breaking floods in Pakistan.

He also urged business community in Pakistan to step forward and donate.

"I have been informed that there is a shortage of food for children, I appeal to all philanthropists, and especially the baby food manufacturers, to expedite products and donate it," he said.

France plans to host an international conference this year on climate-resilient reconstruction of Pakistan's flood-affected areas.

The announcement came after the Pakistani prime minister met French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the UNGA in New York, said a statement issued by Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Malaria, typhoid and diarrhoea spreading quickly

United Nations Pakistan said malaria, typhoid and diarrhoea cases were spreading quickly, adding 44,000 cases of malaria were reported this week in the southern province.

The Sindh provincial government said the makeshift health facilities and mobile camps in the province's flooded areas had treated more than 78,000 patients in the past 24 hours, and more than 2 million since July 1.

Six of them died, it said.

It confirmed 665 new malaria cases among internally displaced families over the same period, with another 9,201 suspected cases.

It said a quarter of the more than 19,000 patients screened in the past 24 hours across the province were positive, a total of 4,876.

Director general health services for south-western Balochistan province, Noor Ahmed Qazi, said malaria was spreading quickly in regions around stagnant waters.

"We're receiving malaria patients in large numbers on a daily basis in medical camps and hospitals," he told Reuters.

"We need more medicines and test kits in flood-hit areas."

(AP Photo/Zahid Hussain)

TV footage showed Jolie arriving at an airport in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, where floods since mid-June have killed 692 people, damaged hundreds of thousands of homes and left half a million people homeless.

Later, she visited some of the flood-affected areas, according to local media.

According to the IRC, a prominent international aid group, Jolie is visiting Pakistan to support communities affected by the devastating floods.

There was no comment from the government about Jolie’s visit to Dadu, one of the worst-hit districts where waterborne diseases have also caused nearly 300 deaths since July. Currently, doctors are trying to contain the outbreak of waterborne diseases among flood survivors.

The visit comes as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is in New York for the 77th session of the U.N. General Assembly. In his speech, Sharif will highlight the damages caused by climate-change induced floods in the impoverished country.

Pakistan says the floods have caused $30 billion in damages to the country’s economy.

Angelina Jolie Shares Photos from Her Trip to Pakistan amid Devastating Floods

"The level of trauma and compound trauma is severe."

Angelina Jolie continues to put her charitable work first as nations across the globe cope with trauma caused by natural disasters, political turmoil, poverty, and lack of resources.

Yesterday, the actress , director, and philanthropist shared an Instagram post featuring various photos from her recent trip to Pakistan amid the devastating floods in the country. Between shots of her alone and with locals, she included slides with facts about the tragedy.

"Last week I was in Pakistan with @rescueorg and local organizations, to witness the devastation caused by severe flooding which submerged 1/3 of the country’s land," she wrote in the caption. "33 million people are affected, and over 6 million need emergency humanitarian assistance."

Due to the ongoing climate change crisis, the country has seen heavy rains and floods in the past few months. These have impacted at least 33 million people and submerged one-third of the country under water.

The International Rescue Committee , which Jolie partnered with to visit the area, is an organization that responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps locals "survive, recover, and rebuild."

In her post, Jolie also noted that Pakistan still hosts more than one million Afghan refugees, who, now because of the floods, are unable to return safely to their homes.

"Those I was able to reach were still in shock from having fled the Taliban, and now knowing the country they have fled to is in an emergency," she wrote. "The level of trauma and compound trauma is severe. Please learn and follow what is happening. Be aware of the climate catastrophe that we are seeing more regularly. Push governments to understand that lack of fair trade, rising emissions and failure to address conflicts are causing more death and suffering to millions of families around the world."

Mary-Kate Findon | Thursday 22 September 2022 16:02 BST

Angelina Jolie visits Pakistan to support victims of historic flooding

Angelina Jolie has travelled to Pakistan to support the victims of historic flooding which has impacted over 33 million people.

“I’ve been speaking to people and thinking, if enough aid doesn’t come they won’t be here in the next few weeks, they won’t make it,” Ms Jolie said after landing in Dadu on Tuesday, 20 September.

The UN goodwill ambassador said: “I think this is a real wake-up call to the world about where we are at - that climate change is not only real and it’s not only coming, it’s very much here.”

Hollywood actress and UN humanitarian Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to one of the worst flood-hit areas in southern Pakistan on Tuesday, officials said, as the death toll from months-long deluges rose to 1,559.

An earlier statement by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a US-based non-profit organisation, had said the actor would be visiting flood-affected regions in Pakistan. The press release said she would meet families directly in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of their needs and understand next steps in order to help them rehabilitate and re-build. IRC said the actor will visit their emergency response operations and local organisations assisting displaced people including Afghan refugees.

From 2005-2007, Jolie funded the launch of the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants’ National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children.

In November 2013, Jolie received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary Academy Award. In June 2014, she was appointed an Honorary Dame for her services to the UK’s foreign policy and campaigning to end sexual violence in war zones.

Jolie visited National Flood Relief Response Centre(NFRCC). Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, NFRCC Coordinator and army high-ups thanked and briefed the celebrity about the ongoing relief operation.

Jolie was briefed about the flood response and measures taken thus far. Jolie said she will deeply make her efforts to let the world know about the scale of devastation the climate change crisis is causing and the life-saving support people need.

The Pakistan Army provided Jolie with security during her visit. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported that she was visiting Pakistan to help people affected by the devastating floods.

More than 1,500 people have died, 33 million have been impacted, and one-third of the country has been submerged under water due to heavy monsoon rains and floods in Pakistan. Angelina Jolie has arrived to assess the situation, to hear from people directly about their needs, and discuss steps to prevent such suffering in the future.

Jolie has been to Pakistan twice before, in 2010 and 2005, to support people affected by earthquakes. Her recent visit in 2022 is part of the International Rescue Committee’s relief efforts for flood affectees.

The actor from Maleficent will talk about the urgent support needed for the people of Pakistan and the long-term solutions needed to address the issues of climate change and human displacement.

The IRC released a statement hoping that her visit would inspire the international community, especially the US who contributes the most to carbon emissions, to take action and provide much-needed support to countries struggling with the climate crisis including Pakistan.

IRC Pakistan Country Director Shabnam Baloch said, “The climate crisis is destroying lives and futures in Pakistan, with severe consequences, especially for women and children. The resulting economic loss from these floods will likely lead to food insecurity and increased violence against women and girls. We need immediate support to reach people in urgent need, and long-term investments to stop climate change from destroying our collective futures. With more rains expected in the coming months, we hope Angelina Jolie’s visit will help the world wake up and take action.”

The most recent assessment from the IRC shows that people are urgently in need of food, water, shelter, and healthcare. A survey reported that women and young girls have no access to menstrual hygiene products. The IRC has provided humanitarian assistance to more than 50,000 women and girls, which includes hygiene kits to address the sanitary concerns brought up by women.

Meanwhile, the exes’ daughter Shiloh , 18, became the first of their six kids to take legal steps toward a name change by filing court paperwork on her birthday on May 27. Her petition to become “Shiloh Jolie” was granted on August 19, Life & Style confirmed.

Brad and Angelina also share sons Maddox , 23, Pax , 20, and Knox, 16. The kids have had a complicated relationship with their father since the Maleficent star filed for divorce in 2016. At times, the differences in their individual relationships with Brad have caused a divide between them, a source exclusively told Life & Style in April.

“The siblings do get into arguments about their parents,” the insider said. “While Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Vivienne are all adamantly on Team Angie , Shiloh and Knox continue to talk to their dad. The other kids don’t understand their connection to Brad. They try to persuade them to switch sides, and it causes a lot of tension.”

Angelina's Daughter Zahara Jolie Strolls With Her Sorority Sisters At Spelman College, Shutting Down The Yard

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Zahara Jolie , is blossoming into a confident young woman. She is also an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at Spelman College , and was spotted living Greek life to the fullest on campus.

In a recent TikTok video doing its rounds, Zahara strolled with her Sorors while “Back Outside” by Anycia and Latto played over the video. The 19-year-old wore a green top, matching shorts and had her tresses down. The sorority sisters did their routine in the grass before a crowd.

The college student joined the Mu Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority back in November 2023, so she’s slowly approaching her one year anniversary.

When the soror first introduced herself to her new sisters last year, she said, “My name is Zahara Marley Jolie. And [I] landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California.”

Angelina shared the news that her eldest daughter will be attending Spelman , a historically Black women’s liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2022.

“Zahara with her Spelman sisters!” the actress wrote on Instagram. “Congratulations to all new students starting this year. A very special place and an honor to have a family member as a new Spelman girl.”

Angelina and Brad legally adopted Zahara from Ethiopia in 2006 when she was just seven months old. Jolie has encouraged Zahara to go back and visit her hometown regularly over the years, so she’s in touch with her roots. It shows, by how seamlessly she vibes with her sorors.

In addition to Zahara, Jolie and Pitt share five other children. They include Maddox Chivan who she adopted from an orphanage in Cambodia and Pax Thien, who they adopted from Vietnam. The other three children, Shiloh Nouvel and twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline are Jolie’s biological kids.

How Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Will Avoid Each Other as Both Attend the Venice Film Festival

Angelina Jolie's 'Maria' premieres Aug. 29, while Brad Pitt's 'Wolfs' is on Sept. 1

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are set to shine at the 2024 Venice Film Festival , but don't expect the exes to cross paths in Italy.

The festival's artistic director Alberto Barbera recently told Vanity Fair that while Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 60, are each debuting new movies — Jolie's Maria Callas biopic Maria premieres on Thursday, Aug. 29, while Pitt's and George Clooney will arrive Sunday, Sept. 1, for the premiere of their movie  Wolfs — "of course" their appearances on the red carpet are spread out.

"Angelina will be on the first day, on Thursday [Aug.] 29, and she will leave right after with [ Maria  director]  Pablo Larraín  to go to [the] Telluride [Film Festival]," he told the outlet. "Brad will arrive only on Saturday, to Venice. There is no way that they can cross each other at the Lido."

Jolie spoke at a press conference for Maria on Aug. 29 before the film's screening. When asked how she personally related to the real-life opera singer, she told reporters, "There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know and assume. I related to the part of her that is extremely soft and didn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was and as emotionally open as she truly was. I think I share her vulnerability more than anything."

Pitt was recently seen spending time in Italy with his Wolfs costar and longtime friend Clooney, 63, as Page Six reported on Aug. 19. The duo also recently conducted their cover story for  GQ 's September issue from Château Miraval , the sprawling villa property in Correns, France, that remains at the center of an ongoing legal battle with Jolie.

Clooney and Pitt are expected to arrive at the film festival early on Sept. 1; they are similarly expected to take part in a press conference for Wolfs before the movie's world premiere.

Maria  is screening as part of the  in-competition lineup  at Venice; Jolie stars as  20th-century opera singer  Maria Callas, and the new film from filmmaker Pablo Larraín also stars  Kodi Smit-McPhee , Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher and Haluk Bilginer. Netflix acquired the rights to distribute the film.

Pitt and Clooney's Apple Original film Wolfs , meanwhile, will screen out of competition ; the movie follows the pair as lone-wolf fixers who are assigned the same job.

Jolie is also expected to appear at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival to debut her new movie as a director, Without Blood ; the festival is also honoring her with its Impact Award. Without Blood marks Jolie's first project as a director since 2017.

While promoting her latest film Maria at this year's Venice Film Festival, actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie seemingly alluded to her personal life, including her ongoing, contentious divorce from actor Brad Pitt .

"There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know and assume," the actress said during a press conference on Thursday, Aug. 29, and after being asked what she had most in common with real-life opera singer Maria Callas, the subject of the biopic.

"I related to the part of her that is extremely soft and didn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was and as emotionally open as she truly was," Jolie continued, as reported by People . "I think I share her vulnerability more than anything."

Both Pitt and Jolie are attending the 81st Venice International Film Festival this year—Jolie for her biopic Maria , and Pitt for his new movie Wolfs.

Earlier this month, in an interview for Vanity Fair , Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera explained how the two would successfully avoid each other during the screenings, red carpets and photo calls.

Pitt and Jolie are still in the midst of intense divorce negotiations after the actress filed to end her marriage with her former Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star in 2016.

In 2022, as part of the eight-year divorce proceedings, Jolie filed court paperwork alleging Pitt abused her and her kids in 2016 while on a private plane traveling from France to California, The New York Times reported at the time .

According to the filing, "Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her." At one point, Jolie alleges Pitt “poured beer on Jolie; at another, he poured beer and red wine on the children.”

According to The New York Times, the incident was investigated but federal authorities declined to press criminal charges against Pitt. Days after the plane trip and alleged incident, Jolie filed for divorce.

In response, Anne Kiley, an attorney for Pitt, said the actor "had accepted responsibility for some things in his past, but he would not accept responsibility for the things he did not do."

Recently, the couple's daughter, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, petitioned to change her last name on her 18th birthday, requesting that her father's surname be removed.

Shiloh's decision to remove her father's surname from her last name was reportedly a “significant decision,” and happened after “painful events,” according to a previous report from People .

Angelina Jolie as the tormented 'Divina' Callas at Venice Film Festival

Entertainment hollywood.

The film premieres on the Lido on Thursday evening

Angelina Jolie

Venice: Angelina Jolie returns to the limelight at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday as Maria Callas, "La Divina", whose rich voice, glamourous persona, and tragic love affair mesmerised audiences around the world.

In "Maria", the modern-day movie star will strive to capture the transcendent dramatic presence and tormented life of one of opera's most resplendent divas in a biopic from Chilean director Pablo Larrain.

The film that premieres on the Lido Thursday evening, on the festival's second day, is the last in Larrain's trilogy of movies about iconic real-life women - after 2021's "Spencer" about Lady Di and 2016's "Jackie" about Jacqueline Kennedy.

The director has said only a larger-than-life star in her own right could play the role of the American-born Greek singer.

"This is the greatest diva of the 20th century, and who could play that?" Larrain told Vanity Fair last week.

"I didn't want to work with someone that didn't have that already. I needed an actress who would naturally and organically be that diva, carry that weight, be that presence. Angelina was there."

Absent from the screen since 2021, the 49-year-old American actress and director has kept a relatively low profile even as her lengthy, acrimonious divorce from Brad Pitt continues to make headlines.

The public's fascination with Jolie's private life has parallels with Callas's, whose stormy life and loves - including her relationship with the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who left her for Jacqueline Kennedy - were similarly fodder for the tabloids.

But while the paparazzi will be out in full force Thursday, Jolie - who was spotted in the Venice heat Tuesday cloaked in a Christian Dior trench coat - will not cross paths with Pitt during her visit.

Pitt's action comedy "Wolfs", in which he and George Clooney play rival professional fixers, is playing out of competition on the Lido on Sunday, as purposely planned by festival organisers to avoid awkward encounters.

'Very scary'

One of 21 films in competition for Venice's prestigious Golden Lion prize, "Maria" centres on Callas's final, isolated years in Paris in the 1970s, as she looks back at her life and career before her death at age 53 from a heart attack.

Jolie reportedly studied six months for the role, training herself to mimic the singer's cadences and tones as the film mixes in her own voice with that of the celebrated soprano.

"You can't make a movie like this with an actress that is not actually singing it," Larrain told Vanity Fair.

"This is the real thing - it was very scary for her, but she did it."

While some critics found flaws with Callas's voice, it was nevertheless deeply expressive, able to impart dramatic intensity to any role, which combined with her beauty and majestic stage presence prompting frenzied standing ovations.

A towering talent with a tireless work ethic, Callas was often portrayed as a "temperamental" star, a label she rejected, defending herself as a disciplined perfectionist with high standards.

She single-handedly revived the 19th-century bel canto operas of Donizetti, Rossini and Bellini - whose "Norma" was one of Callas's signature roles.

Angelina Jolie dazzles Venice Film Festival with ‘Maria,’ a biopic about opera legend Maria Callas

angelina jolie visit to pakistan 2022

Associated Press

VENICE, Italy (AP) — For Angelina Jolie, portraying the famed opera singer Maria Callas meant more to her than she can put into words.

“I felt such a privilege to feel like I got to know this woman and got to be inside her skin a moment. I really care for her deeply,” Jolie told The Associated Press a few hours the film’s world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival Thursday. “I think I’ll carry that like a friend.”

Jolie looked every part the movie star on the red carpet Thursday evening in a champagne-colored gown custom made by Tamara Ralph with a fur stole.

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín called on Jolie to take on the role as the legendary soprano in “Maria,” which was recently acquired by Netflix for distribution. The film focuses on the final week of her life in 1977, in Paris. She is deeply isolated, with only her butler (Pierfrancesco Favino) and housemaid (Alba Rohrwacher) looking after her — concerned about her health, the drugs and the devastating ripple effects of her diminished voice.

Larraín, a Venice regular, continues to explore the lives of very famous women with tragic narratives attached to them. In 2016, he came to the festival with his Jackie Kennedy portrait, “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman as the first lady in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination. In 2021 he returned with Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana as she considered divorce over the Christmas holiday in “Spencer.” Both films earned their leads best actress Oscar nominations.

“Maria” is the so-called conclusion to this trilogy of historical women, though Callas may be a bit less known to younger generations who weren’t around for the headlines and scandals. Born Maria Kalogeropoulos to Greek parents in New York, the singer made her professional debut in Athens as a 17-year-old.

During her brief life she became one of the greatest opera singers of all time with her unparalleled voice and stage presence. But the accolades also came with the intense scrutiny of her life in the public eye, whether it was her exacting demands and “diva” behavior, her weight or her romantic life. Callas famously had a relationship with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis who left her for Jackie Kennedy.

She died in Paris at age 53 after a heart attack.

“When I put her big glasses on and her Greek hair and I sat in my little robe as an older lady, I felt a (Maria) that felt like the private (Maria) that the world didn’t know,” Jolie said. “And I connected to her first and, and kind of loved her.”

Jolie made a grand entrance on the docks of the Hotel Excelsior, on the Lido, posing for photographers in a golden acid-colored Tom Ford jersey kaftan dress with hair long and loose. For the press conference, she’d changed into a slim black maxi dress.

She was reluctant to compare fame in Callas’ time to the present moment.

“I didn’t live then. I guess hard in different ways, easy in different ways,” Jolie said. “She was celebrated as one of the most wonderful artists and she also had food thrown at her and insulted and lied about. So I don’t know. She must have felt… she must have felt very alone.”

Jolie trained for nearly seven months to prepare for the role. The singing in the film is a blend of actor and the real thing.

“My first days, (Larraín) was very good to me in that we started in a more intimate first with very few crew members,” Jolie said. “And we ended at La Scala with everyone. So I had a little time to get my nerve. But this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I was terrified.”

Larraín said it was “the only way to do it.”

“Opera requires a very particular style of singing — in the pitch, the color, the breathing, the posture,” he said. “Sometimes it’s a tiny bit of Angie and mostly Maria and then sometimes it’s more, but it’s always there. We needed to do that because it’s the only way that she could properly prepare the character, play it right and then create the right illusion.”

Jolie has twice been nominated for acting Oscars. She won for her supporting role in “Girl, Interrupted,” and was last nominated for her leading role in Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling.” Netflix has not announced specific release plans for “Maria,” but Jolie’s performance already has awards buzz behind it.

The actor is also expected to depart Venice before her ex-husband Brad Pitt arrives for the premiere of his film “Wolfs” on Sunday. Though legally single since 2019, they are still fighting over issues like custody, finances and a winery in France.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, a journalist asked Jolie if there were surprising ways she related to Callas.

“There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know, or assume,” Jolie said. But, she said, she feels they do both share a softness and a vulnerability.

The film also made her reconsider her idea of the word “diva.”

“I’ve relearned that word through Maria,” she said. “And I have a new relationship to it.”

Larraín added: “Whatever we think about a diva, a diva would never exist if there wasn’t excellence in what she does.”

“Maria” is among the 21 features competing for the festival’s awards which will be announced on Sept. 7.
