Getting Around in VB Is as Easy as 1, 2, 3…

Whether you’re looking for a quick ride to some of the city’s most popular attractions, alternative transportation to the Oceanfront or searching for the best available parking spots, we’ve got you covered!

The Wave Trolley

Operated by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), the popular Wave Trolley makes it easy to get around Virginia Beach’s Resort Beach area, while soaking up all that the Virginia Beach Oceanfront has to offer.

The Atlantic Avenue Shuttle (Route 30) leads to restaurants and oceanfront attractions, with daily service every 15 minutes, 8 a.m. - 2 a.m., May through September.

Seasonal Shuttles

HRT also operates two seasonal shuttle routes from the Resort Beach, making it easy for guests to get from the Oceanfront to other area attractions and shopping destinations:

The Bayfront Shuttle (Route 35) runs from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront (Resort Area) to First Landing State Park, through the North End beaches and up to the Bayfront along Shore Drive (Bay Area). Daily service is offered every 45 minutes, 8 a.m. – midnight, May – Labor Day, and Friday-Sunday, Sept. 8 - Oct. 1.

The Aquarium and Campground Shuttle (Route 31) takes you to Virginia Aquarium and fun parks along General Booth Blvd., with daily service every 20 minutes, 9:30 a.m.-11:10 p.m. daily, May through Labor Day.

Single fares for all shuttles are $2 or less – you can pay with cash onboard or use cash, debit or credit cards to purchase multiple-day passes and fare cards at Sunsations locations along Atlantic Avenue or at ticket vending machines along Atlantic Avenue at 13th, 17th, 29th, 37th and 41st Streets. For a full list of shuttles available, real-time updates and route maps, visit HRT Online.

Exploring Virginia Beach by water is also an option – and a beautiful one at that! A variety of sightseeing boat tours and private charters are available throughout our water-loving city. Of course, you may also choose to get around aboard SUP or kayak to your heart’s content.

With an array of bicycle and surrey rental options and more than 200 miles of trails and bikeways , as well as a three-mile Boardwalk, you’ll find plenty of options of getting around Virginia Beach on a different set of wheels.

Multiple city-owned parking options will put you just steps from the action. Click here for information on parking spaces and rules across all of our beaches, or call (757) 385-4800.

TROLLEYS / SHUTTLES and MINI-BUSES

web_vbwave_header

Ride “The Wave”

“The Wave” is what we call our Trolley and Shuttle system in Virginia Beach.  We may sometimes generically refer to it all as a “ shuttle system ” so don’t be confused by the terms.  It’s all a part of the same Hampton Roads Transit System (HRT).

Depending on the route that you are taking you will either ride a Trolley or a Shuttle (mini-bus) .

The Trolleys are only located at the oceanfront on Atlantic Avenue. You will feel like you’ve stepped right in the 1950s. Riding this little slice of nostalgia is a fun and inexpensive way to sightsee and make your way around the beach area. Kids will love to ride on The WaveTrolleys just for the fun of it! Super reasonable fares!

Shuttles and mini-buses are used for the other non-oceanfront routes.

VB Wave Trolley and Shuttle System Routes and Schedules

The Wave has 3 primary routes to choose from in Virginia Beach: (CLICK THE IMAGE ON  THE RIGHT TO DOWNLOAD THE MAP)

1. Route 30 – Oceanfront Atlantic Avenue Trolley Ride the VB Wave Trolleys from one end of Atlantic Avenue to the other. They go from the Rudde Loop at the sount end all the way to 42nd street. The trolleys stop along the way at shops, restaurants, museums and more.

FREQUENCY: Daily, May – September, 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. about every 15 minutes.

2. Route 31 – Aquarium and Campground Shuttle Ride the VB Wave Shuttle / Mini-Bus south to campgrounds and tennis courts, fun parks, and to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Museum. Catch the Atlantic Avenue shuttle for points north. Aquarium and Ocean Breeze serviced during operating hours only.

FREQUENCY:  Daily, May – Labor Day, 9:30 a.m. until 11:10 p.m., about every 20 minutes.

3. Route 32 – Shoppers Shuttle Ride the VB Wave Shuttle / Mini-Bus to the trendy, up-scale Hilltop area for shopping and dining. Take it a little further to Virginia Beach’s premier shopping experience, Lynnhaven Mall.

FREQUENCY:  Daily, May – Labor Day, 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., about every hour.

  • Let Google plan your trip online. At www.gohrt.com, click on “Trip Planner” and fill in your starting and ending place.
  • Plan your own trip online — If you already know which route(s) you will ride. At www.gohrt.com, click “Routes”.
  • Pick up route maps in the lobby of HRT offices in Norfolk or Hampton; each one shows the route and the times the bus reaches key points.

Paying for your ride

  • If you are going to pay as you ride, have ready $1.75 (in correct change) every time you board.
  • If you’ll ride more than twice on one day, it’s cheaper to buy a Go-1-Day Pass for $4.00. On your first ride of the day, buy your card from the machine (on the bus or the ferry or the light rail platform). Be sure to have correct change.
  • If you have a valid Pass (Go-1-Day or Go-30-Day or Go-365), be ready to use it every time you board the bus, ferry or light rail.

* Persons with disabilities or Medicare cardholders pay less for any fare or pass.  Youth may also pay less than full fare on certain services.  Have an ID ready, and ask before you pay. *

Wanda Coach Washington Virginia Beach recent customer reviews

I didnt enjoy the filthy bathroom and the driver didn’t speak English so he yelled thinking it helps us (the passengers) under him better but I we didn’t.

The bus is horrible, there was very dirty and the toilet stank all over the bus 🤢

It was my first time with Wanda. The bus is not so clean but the worst part is the communication and location where it parked. My departure is 7 pm and they arrived at 8 pm without notification that it would be running late. The bus location to pick up is not safe and for women, and girls waiting that late in that part of DC (Benning Rd NE)is a huge No! 8pm.

Officials with the City of Newport News, Amtrak and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority recognized the arrival of Train 67 shortly after 11 a.m.

The center will provide two daily roundtrips between Newport News and Richmond, Alexandria, Washington, D.C., and other cities in the Northeast. The center also serves as a transfer point for Amtrak Thruway Bus Service, which will allow passengers to travel to Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

The 10,050-square-foot transportation hub is located on Bland Boulevard between Warwick Boulevard and Interstate 64. It offers an 8,066-square-foot station and a 1,984-square-foot canopy designed to protect travelers from the elements.

Sitting about a mile from the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport, it replaces a small, outdated Amtrak station located 9 miles to the south on Warwick Boulevard.

Originally slated to open in May or June, the $53 million project was hit by contractor delays. Amtrak officials also had to test the construction — ensuring that all 2 miles of new trackwork functioned as intended.

The majority of the cost was covered by federal and state grants, with the city contributing $1.48 million.
