About India Gate

A popular monument in India, India Gate stands majestically, presenting an awe-inspiring sight. Formerly known as Kingsway, India Gate construction was completed in 1931. India Gate Delhi has been a symbol of sacrifice and dedication of India soldiers.

Designed by Edwin Lutyens, it was constructed in the honour of 90,000 Indian soldiers who lost their life in the World War I. Also known as India War Memorial, it also has 13,516 names of Indian and British soldiers engraved on its arch and foundations. These soldiers lost their lives during the Afghan War of 1919.

Amar Jawan Jyoti, which is also an important part of India Gate, was built later as a tribute to Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971.

With a height of 42 meters and impressive structure which is accompanied by the captivating surroundings, India Gate attracts hordes of visitors every day. The popularity of India Gate can be known from the fact that it is an integral part of every Delhi tour since bygone eras.

Located at the end of Rajpath, it has now become a popular recreational spot with choices of activities as varying as boating, sightseeing or relaxing. Later the statue was removed from here and moved to Coronation Park.

India Gate Quotes

Names of soldiers who scarified their lives for the country have been inscribed on India Gate. However, due to security reasons, reading the names is not possible. These names also included that of a female nurse of Territorial Force who lost her life in 1917.

Both the sides of India Gate arch are also carved with word INDIA which is bordered by MCMXIV 1914 on left and MCMXIX 1919 on the right. Below INDIA following Quote has been inscribed:

Importance of India Gate

The importance of India Gate is not only as a war monument, but more than that. It still holds high significance. Republic day at India Gate is one such activity that shows the prominence this structure holds in the country. It is visited by Indian President every year on the Republic Day, on 26th January.

President of India pays his homage to the Indian soldiers who fought for the country by placing a circlet at Amar Jawan Jyoti which is located under the India gate arch. It is then followed by the India gate Independence Day parade which moves towards the Rajpath. History of India Gate

India Gate War Memorial was built as a work of the IWCG (Imperial War Graves). IWCG was created to build war memorials and graves for the soldiers who were killed during World War I. The foundation of this war memorial was placed in the year 1921 by the visiting Duke of Connaught.

It took around 10 years for the construction of Dilli India Gate . It was inaugurated in February 1931 by Viceroy Lord Irwin. This 42 meter high war memorial standing like an archway in the centre of a crossroad is representative of the sacrifices of the Indian soldiers.

It was built in the honour of around 90,000 soldiers who scarified themselves in WWI in various parts of the world like Mesopotamia, France, Persia, East Africa, Flanders, Gallipoli and other places. India Gate History shows that this war memorial is not associated only with the soldiers who lost their lives in World War I but also those who sacrificed themselves in North western Frontier in the 1919 Afghan war. Names of around 13,516 from Afghan War are also inscribed on the memorial.

In 1971, a new addition was made to India Gate Delhi. Amar Jawan Jyoti burning since the year 1971, honours the soldiers who laid down their lives while fight for the country during Indo-Pakistan War. It was inaugurated in 1972.

Architecture of India Gate, Delhi

The founder of India Gate is Sir Edwin Lutyens, who designed this marvellous piece of architecture. Architectural style of India gate is often compared to the Gateway of India in Mumbai , Arch of Constantine of Rome and Arc De Triomphe of Paris.

The architectural style of India Gate is also similar to Cenotaph, in London which is free of any religious association; hence one can see there are no religious or cultural ornamentation on this architecture. It is a secular war memorial.

The height of India Gate is 42 meters , standing on the eastern end of Rajpath. The stone used in India Gate is red Bharatpur stone . The war memorial stands on a base made up of this stone. It then rises into stages to its present structure. The entire complex of India Gate is in the shape of hexagon, covering an area of 306,000 sq. Meter. The complex is surrounded by lush green gardens.

Towards eastern side of India gate, around 150 meters away, is the 72 feet long canopy. Said to be inspired by the 6th century old pavilion from Mahabalipuram, this domed canopy is supported by four columns. Under the ceiling, there is a pedestal with GEORGE V R I inscribed on it. There used to be 50 foot tall marble statue of King George V under the canopy. In 1960, the statue was later removed and placed along with other British era statues in Coronation Park.

Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate

Amar Jawan Jyoti is a national monument which honours the brave soldiers of the country. After the 1971 India Pakistan War, also known as Bangladesh Liberation War, Amar Jawan Jyoti was built beneath the India Gate archway. It was built in the memory of soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the war.

Amar Jawan Jyoti which is also referred as the “Flame of the Immortal Soldiers” is a simple structure, with pedestal made up of black marble. On the marble stand, a reversed rifle has been placed which has a helmet on it. This rifle is surrounded by undying flames on all the four sides. On both the sides of the memorial, words “Amar Jawan” meaning immortal fighter, has been carved in gold.

As a tribute to all the soldiers, these eternal flames have been burning ever since its construction. Also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers Amar Jawan Jyoti was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on the eve of Republic Day. Garlands are placed on the Amar Jawan Jyoti on Vijay Diwas, Infantry Day and Republic Day.

Boating at India Gate

The boating charges at India Gate is Rs.50 per person for a ride of 15 minutes while for a 30 minute boat ride, the charges are Rs.100 per person. It is open on all days of the week.

Although India gate boating timings are from 2 PM to 9 PM, boating at India Gate is especially popular in evenings when the weather is comparatively cooler. From couples to families, everyone can be seen enjoy a boat ride on the serene lake while having a mesmerising view of the majestic India Gate war memorial .

Children’s Park at India Gate

Another popular place adjacent to the India Gate Memorial is the Children Park. Spread over an area of around 10 acres of land, Children’s park at India Gate is an ideal place for families to visit. Along with aquarium, jungle book theatre, amphitheatre, hi-tech games and musical fountain, there is also a library inside the park with a minimal charge for membership. Opening timings of the library is from 11 AM to 5 PM on all days of the week, except on Sundays while the timings of Children’s Park is 10 AM to 8 PM. The entry to the park is free.

During evenings, especially on weekends, the complex is filled with hawkers and stalls and tourists who can be seen relaxing in the surrounding gardens. No entry fee is charged for visiting this war memorial.

How to reach India Gate

There are regular DTC buses to India Gate from all the major parts of Delhi. Another popular and faster way to reach India Gate in Delhi is via metro. Central Secretariat Metro Station on the yellow and violet line is the nearest metro station to India Gate. The station is only 2 km away from India Gate. From there, you can either take an auto-rickshaw or even walk down.

Other metro stations which are near India Gate are Barakhamba Road Metro Station and Pragati Maidan Metro Station on Blue Line. Both these are located at a distance of 3 km from India Gate and you can take an auto from these stations to reach the memorial.

The distance between Red Fort and India Gate is around 8 km which can be covered within 15 minutes of time.

Rajpath: Rajpath is a stretch of road which is around 5 km long. This broad road runs between India Gate Memorial to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The road is wide and kept clean with green lawns and ponds on both the sides, making it a pleasant path for walks.
Rashtrapati Bhawan: The impressive structure of Rashtrapati Bhawan is another place to see near India Gate. The official residence of the President of India, it comprises of around 300 rooms with a durbar hall where the official functions are organised. India gate situated on the eastern side of Rajpath salutes the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I. The India Gate permits the tourists to retrace the bravado of the Indian soldiers. The monument is now a major tourist spot in Delhi and a common picnic site for tourists and residents.

The India gate was structured and designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1921.The foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness - The Duke of Connaught. The India Gate was built to commemorate the British and Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and hundreds of soldiers who lost their lives in the Northwest Frontier, the Afghan war of 1919 and the Indo-Pak war in 1971.

The India Gate reaches up to a height of 42mtrs and stands tall in the heart of the city with an arched structure. It is boasted that the India Gate is similar in structural elegance to the counterpart in Paris. The monument is built with light brown Bharatpur stones. An added memorial- Amar Jawan Jyoti was introduced in 1971 after the Indo-Pak war in the memory of the many deceased Indian soldiers. A flame burns day and night in remembrance of the lost lives.

Delhi is one of the target cities when it comes to tourism in India. It houses some of the most famous buildings in India. However, in this article, we are not going to explore and learn about all of those building. Instead, we will restrict our focus and learn more about the India Gate.

What Is The India Gate?

Originally, “All India War Memorial” was the name for India Gate . This war memorial gate dedicates the 70,000 Indian soldiers. Especially, who lost their lives during the I World War and the II Anglo-Afghan War. These wars were held during the time period of 1914 to 1921.

India gate is present astride Rajpath which is located on the East of ‘ceremonial axis’ of New Delhi , India. This ‘ceremonial axis’ was earlier known as the Kingsway. On the building of India gate, one can easily spot the names of around 13,300 servicemen including both commandoes and executives from the UK engraved on the war memorial.

Architecture Of India Gate

One of the most interesting facts about India gate is that its architecture actually showcases the triumphal arch’s structural style even though it is a war memorial. This is one of the reasons why the India gate is usually correlated with the Gateway of India in Mumbai. It also resembles the Arch of Constantine in Rome and Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Sir Edwin Lutyens was the personality who produced the design of the architectural structure of the India Gate. On February 12, 1931, India gate was first opened to the general public. It has a height of almost 42 meters and is officially located at Rajpath, India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi, 110001.

Another fun fact about the India Gate is that in 1972, after the Bangladeshi Liberation War, a simple and small structure was added to the war memorial. The gate primarily consisted of a black marble plinth. It further had a rifle, a helmet capping it, and four eternal flames on all its four sides.

It was strategically built under the sky-high and magnificent memorial archway. This particular structure is known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti or the Flame of the Immortal Soldier. This structure has also served as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in India.

India Gate is one of the largest was memorials in India. Before the parade, every single year the Prime Minister of India pays his or her respect at the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

Just like most famous war memorials in the world, India gate does not just hold strong sentimental value for all citizens of this country but also has a very rich and interesting history. This gate comes under the list of primary works of the Imperial War Graves Commission (I. W. G. C).

This commission had commenced into the world in December 1917. It was primarily dedicated to building memorials and war graves for soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War. According to the official reports, the establishment of the All India War Memorial was set out on 10 February 1921 at exactly 4:30 pm.

The Duke of Connaught is a responsible man for this establishment. He was visiting then, in a soldierly ceremony which was quite solemn. Chief officers of the British Indian Army, the Viceroy, the Commander in Chief, and the Imperial Service Troops had attended this ceremony.

10 years after that ceremony, the All India War Memorial had been initiated on February 12, 1931, by the Viceroy Lord Irwin. This time period gave rise to many achievements and goal accomplishment. However, out of all the achievements, the two were most noteworthy. One is rail line being shifted to run along the Yamuna River. Secondly, opening of the New Delhi Railway Station in 1926.

Currently, the India Gate is considered to be one of the most important attractions of tourism in India. In the evening, from 7 PM to 9:30 PM, this famous building is illuminated. Earlier, cars could pass through the India gate but eventually, due to growing traffic in the area, the government restricted it.

However, there is a very beautiful tradition of the republic day parade starting from the Rashtrapati Bhavan and passing through the India gate.

Located in Rajpath, India Gate is one of the most prestigious monuments built-in memory of the India officers who were brutally murdered in the North West province during the first World War. India Gate New Delhi is situated at the heart of the capital city. It is hardly 2.3 km from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President of India’s residence, which is on the extreme east of the sacramental boulevard Rajpath.

History of India Gate

The India Gate was initially known as the All India War Memorial. It was constructed in the memory of the 82,000 soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Empire in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. These brave soldiers were an integral part of the Undivided Indian Army. The structure was undertaken as part of the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) in the year 1917 in an initiative started by the British Imperial Mandate. Duke of Connaught laid the foundation stone on 10 February 1921, where members of the Indian Army attended the memorial ceremony. The project was completed in 1931 and was inaugurated on February 12, 1931. The then Viceroy, Lord Irwin inaugurated the structure. It is not only a war memorial but also a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Architecture of India Gate

The architect of India Gate is late Edwin Lutyens who laid the founding stone of the memorial. The marvelous stone memorial is 42 meters high and pays homage to the 90,000 Indian Army Bravehearts who died fighting for the country in the first World War and the Afghan Conquest of 1919. The whole structure is built up of sandstone and the height of the curve is 136 inches and 87.6 inches respectively. India Gate is considered the main entryway which was developed in New Delhi. The dividers of the memorial have the names of the officers engraved on them. Besides the dividers, an interminable fire burns in honor of the Amar Jawan called as the Amar Jawan Jyoti. He is also credited with the designs of sixty-six war memorials in Europe. The design of India Gate’s arch is a masterpiece which is also similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. India Gate is located in the middle of a hexagonal complex. It has a diameter of 625m and occupies a total area of 360,000 sq meters. Height of India Gate is 42 m and width is 9.1m. The building is made up of red and yellow sandstones. The structure is erected on a flat base and rises in asymmetrical steps. On a closer look at the India Gate, you will be able to notice the features distinctly.

a) World War I and Indian Contribution:

British Indian Contribution: India, at the time, was under British colonial rule. The British Indian Army played a crucial role in supporting the Allied forces during the war.

b) The Idea of a War Memorial:

The India Gate features a width of 9.1 m at its larger opening and rises in tiers to reach a height of 42 meters. It culminates in a substantial cornice moulding above a frieze adorned with sunburst motifs. At the pinnacle, there is a shallow domed bowl designed for the purpose of holding burning oil during anniversaries. The hexagonal complex of the memorial gate, spanning a diameter of approximately 625 meters, encompasses an expansive area of about 306,000 square meters.

India Gate’s architectural roots can be traced back to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and its design was conceptualized by Sir Edwin Lutyens, a visionary architect of the early 20th century. Echoing the grandiosity of classical Roman arches. The arch serves as the focal point, drawing the eyes of onlookers and inviting them to reflect on the historical significance it embodies. The India Gate structure takes an oblong form, featuring a substantial arch on each of its four faces. Notably, the arches on the longer sides are both larger and taller than those on the shorter sides. On the shorter sides, the arches are obstructed at the base by doorways but remain open higher up. From a technical standpoint, the presence of four arches classifies the structure as a tetrapylon. Above the blocked lower portions of the arches on the shorter sides, a significant stone ornament is prominently displayed. Mouldings encircle the building at the levels where both sizes of arches originate, and the keystones of the arches slightly protrude.

The Canopy:

Crowned by a large shallow dome, the canopy adds a touch of elegance to India Gate. This intricately designed dome, adorned with decorative elements, further enhances the architectural splendor of the monument. Approximately 150 meters to the east of the gate, situated at a junction where six roads intersect, stands a cupola with a height of 22 m. In its construction, Lutyens employed four columns in the Delhi Order style to uphold the domed canopy and its chhajja. Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji inaugurated the statue of Subhash Chandra Bose on his 125th anniversary in January 2022.
