Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

What to know before you go

POPULATION Italy’s 59 million residents are joined by nearly as many yearly visitors—it’s the fifth most visited country in the world.

CAPITAL Rome—known as the Eternal City—is older than Italy itself, predating the country by 2,600 years.

CULTURAL QUICK TAKE With more than 162,000 coffee bars to choose from, Italians cherish their daily tazza di caffè. Remember: While you can enjoy an espresso any time, cappuccinos are exclusively ordered in the morning.

WHAT TO GO FOR Sumptuous art and architecture, bucolic village piazzas, and a rapidly melting pistachio gelato—all of which you’ll experience with our Italy travel packages.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES ON TOUR Trips to Italy simply aren’t complete without truffle hunting and pasta making. Plus, visits to agriturismos, lemon groves, and olive farms let you add a bespoke touch to your already flavor-filled journey.

Travel tips for Italy trips

One of the best parts about Italy is the diversity within its borders—from the rugged, Alpine beauty of Northern Italy to the laid-back countryside of Tuscany and Umbria, to the cultural capitals of Rome and Florence, to the colorful beaches of the Italian Riviera and the Mediterranean Coast. It’s hard to choose where to go, but, luckily, many of our Italy tour packages cover a few different distinct areas, like Venice, Florence, and Rome, or Florence, Tuscany, and the Italian Riviera.

Our guided tours of Italy span the spectrum, and sometimes it’s best to start with your interests.

  • Rome, Florence, or Venice.  If it’s your first time in Italy, you may want to begin with the iconic cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice, where you’ll walk through the Colosseum and other historic sites of the Roman Empire, soak in the art and architecture of the birthplace of the Renaissance, and navigate Venice’s beautiful network of canals.
  • Tuscany, Umbria, Northern Italy, or the Italian Riviera.  If you’re a foodie, our culinary-themed Italy vacation packages, such as our small-group  Food & Wine: Flavors of Tuscany & Umbria  and  Food & Wine: Northern Italy & the Italian Riviera  tours, are perfect for you.
  • Rome or Pompeii.  If you’re a history buff, Italy tours that include Rome or Pompeii are the best place to start.
  • Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast.  For those who are all about sunshine and nature, you’ll love itineraries that include Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast.
  • Florence, Milan, Siena, Alberobello, or Venice . Art lovers should consider a trip that includes Florence (for the Renaissance masterpieces), Milan and Siena (for their showstopping cathedrals), and Alberobello and Venice (for Alberobello’s traditional stone huts and Venice’s blown glass).

While summer is often the most common time to visit, it’s also the hottest and most crowded, so we recommend taking one of our guided trips to Italy in the off-season. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures for sightseeing. You’ll also enjoy smaller crowds, great prices, and seasonal extras, like spring flowers and fall festivals.

Rural areas in Italy’s beloved wine country are particularly beautiful in the fall, when the year’s harvest occurs, usually in October and November. On one of our escorted tours of Italy during this time, you’ll find some of the country’s most flavorful produce, like truffles, chestnuts, grapes, mushrooms, and eggplant. It’s a wonderful time to shop local markets, visit vineyards, and get a feel for daily life during this flavorful season.

If you’re looking to visit Rome or other parts of Southern Italy, winter is also a great time to plan a trip, when the crowds are much smaller at the main attractions like the Colosseum and the Vatican, and the temperatures are cool yet still comfortable for exploring. If this sounds right for you, check out our  Rome: The City Experience  or  Sicily: A Cultural Journey  tours.

In a country bursting with must-see attractions, it would be easier to ask, “Where not to go?” But here’s a short list of the most compelling places to visit in Italy:

  • The Colosseum.  This marvel of ancient Roman engineering is over 1,900 years old, and a visit inside its 157-foot walls is like flipping back the pages of history.
  • The Pantheon.  Remarkable for its size and design, the Pantheon has survived in its original form and is the best-preserved ancient Roman monument.
  • The Duomo.  This legendary Florence cathedral was the world’s largest when it opened in 1436. The Duomo is famous for its Renaissance masterworks and its massive octagonal dome.
  • The Roman Forum.  Once the setting of parades, elections, and trials, the ruins of the Forum give a glimpse of everyday life in ancient Rome.
  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Even though its famous lean began during its construction, this medieval bell tower was considered an engineering marvel of its time.
  • St. Mark’s Basilica.  One of the world’s most iconic travel destinations, St. Mark’s Basilica was Venice’s religious heart centuries ago. A visit to the basilica and the square it’s located in is an absolute must.
  • Vatican City.  Steeped in tradition, history, and even a bit of mystery, Vatican City—the seat of the Catholic Church—is the most-visited spot in Rome. The tiny city-state is home to the breathtaking St. Peter’s Basilica, world-renowned museums, manicured gardens, and the Sistine Chapel.
  • Pompeii.  Experience history preserved. The Roman city of Pompeii was famously covered in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The deep layer of ash preserved structures and objects frozen in time.

In a country with a rich history and culture, there are many popular activities to experience on our trips to Italy. Some of the most popular activities include:

  • Visiting historical sites.  Italy is home to countless historical sites, such as the Colosseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the ancient city of Pompeii.
  • Exploring the countryside.  Italy’s beautiful countryside, with rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves, makes it a pleasure to discover.
  • Enjoying the food.  Famous for its delicious dishes, Italy will please your palate from Piedmont to Sicily. Wine and food tasting excursions on our trips allow you to sample the best of Italian food and wine. Check out our  food lover’s guide to Italy  for six of the top culinary moments to experience in Italy.
  • Visiting museums and galleries.  You don’t need to be a history buff or art lover to enjoy the magnificent art and rich history that Italy is steeped in. From the papal treasures of the Vatican Museums to the masterworks of the Uffizi Gallery, Italy is home to some of the world’s most incredible art and historical collections. Check out our  art lover’s guide to Italy  and our  history lover’s guide to Italy .
  • Shopping.  Italy is also a shopper’s paradise, with everything from designer clothes to handmade souvenirs. If you love luxury brands, specialty boutiques, or great deals from street vendors, you’ll find it all on our tours of Italy.
  • Enjoying outdoor activities.  No need to spend all your time sightseeing. Outdoor activities, like hiking, cycling, and skiing, are also popular, depending on the season.
  • Relaxing on the beach.  Italy has long coastlines with beautiful beaches to relax on.

With its millennia-spanning history, mouthwatering regional cuisine, and countless artistic treasures, it’s no wonder Italy consistently ranks at the top of travelers’ wish lists. The country offers so much ancient history and delicious food and is home to countless artistic treasures. Italy offers experiences you can’t have anywhere else. Some activities you can experience on our Italy tours include:

  • Taking a gondola ride in  Venice
  • Visiting Vatican City in  Rome
  • Watching the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo in  Florence
  • Exploring the colorful villages of  Cinque Terre
  • Eating homemade pasta in the tiny village of Noto
  • Taking a cooking class to learn how to make  traditional Italian dishes
  • Staying overnight at an  Italian agriturismo
  • Hunting for truffles

We recommend you spend at least six days in Italy. While our most popular Italy tours run nine days or more, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one or two cities in the same region.

Yes. Our Italy trip packages visit some of the country’s most famous wine regions, including Tuscany, Umbria, Campania, Puglia, Sicily, and Piedmont.

If exploring Italian vintages is high on your list of to-dos,  learn about our top five Italian wineries to check off your bucket list , then browse our  Food & Wine Tours . We offer a number of trips to Italy’s different growing regions.

Italy has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. However, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so checking the forecast before traveling on any of our Italy tour packages is essential.

Pull up a seat at any table in Italy and you’re guaranteed to be greeted by the same thing: a dish made with equal parts local ingredients and love. In Italy, a homemade meal is synonymous with a warm welcome, and time-honored cooking traditions allow seasonal flavors to shine.

In general, as you travel from north to south, the cuisine and flavors get lighter. In Northern Italy, where there are more pastures and livestock, you’ll find flavorful meats, rich pastas, and bold wines. In Southern Italy, you’ll feel the influence of the Mediterranean in dishes that feature lots of fish, vegetables, citrus, and olives.

Here are some of the best Italian dishes:

  • Pizza . Naples, the place to get a classic pie, serves up a pure and simple version with just tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil.
  • Seafood . Liguria, a region better known as the Italian Riviera, is known for all kinds of fresh-from-the-sea specialties, particularly anchovies, mussels, and a mixed seafood stew called ciuppin.
  • Pesto . Another favorite from the Italian Riviera, this vibrant sauce is often served on pasta alongside seafood or fresh veggies, like zucchini.
  • Tagliatelle Bolognese . Bologna, where recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, is the birthplace of this all-time favorite dish. It features wide noodles topped with a sauce of ground meat.
  • Olive oil.  When it comes to the places where you’ll find the best olive oil, it’s a toss-up between Tuscany, where you’ll find delicious peppery olive oil, and Puglia, the country’s olive oil capital.
  • Arancini . Sicily is the home of these fried rice-and-cheese balls, but you can find them throughout most of Southern Italy, filled with a variety of delicious stuffings.

The euro. For tips on using the euro while on a trip to Italy,  check out our blog post about currency exchange .

Italian is the most widely spoken language in Italy. However, English is commonly used in popular areas. That said, knowing some key phrases is always useful. It will help you find your way around and show locals that you’re interested in learning about their culture.  Here are some key Italian phrases to know before you go .

To truly  experience Italy like a local , keep these things in mind.

  • Punctuality . Italians value punctuality, so arriving on time for appointments and meetings is important.
  • Greeting people.  Greeting people with a handshake or kiss on the cheek is customary.
  • Dining out.  Eating in Italy is an art form. It’s considered rude to ask for substitutions or not to finish your meal. And when it comes to spaghetti, roll it on a fork. Don’t eat spaghetti with a spoon or use a knife to cut it.  And don’t order an espresso with your meal. Save the coffee until after you’re finished eating.
  • Remove your hat . It’s a well-established tradition in Italy to remove your hat when you enter a church. The same goes for entering restaurants and cafes.
  • Leave your shorts in your suitcase.  Few Italians wear shorts in the city. Dressing well is important, especially in the cities.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Italy. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve booked one of our Italy tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection.  For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Italy, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers.  For tours of Italy, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  Since you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential to have with you. Italy is famous for its fashionable footwear, but it’s also known for its cobblestone streets and steps. So, while you may be tempted to dress as fashionably as the locals, we recommend erring on the side of comfort to save yourself from blisters.
  • Dressier attire.  You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites.  It is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and staff at these sites may deny entrance on this basis.
  • A travel adapter.  A plug adapter is one of the most essential things to buy before going to Italy. Italy uses three plug types: C, F, and L. Type C plugs have two round pins, type F have two round pins with clips on the top and bottom, and type L have three round pins in a row. Most hotel rooms have a mixture of type F (used throughout Europe) and L (Italy only), but know that you can use a type F in a type C outlet and type C in a type L outlet (that’s a lot to remember, we know). As long as you have one of these power adapters, you’ll be absolutely fine.
  • A small day bag.  Many churches and museums will not allow you to bring in large backpacks for security purposes—you’ll need to check them at the door. However, you can wear a small day bag on your front, like a cross-body travel bag or stylish mini backpack.
  • An RFID money belt or wallet.  Italy’s city streets can get busy, and like in any country with many tourists, you’ll want to be wary of pickpockets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.
  • A portable charger.  As you float along Venice’s canals, take in the Renaissance mastery of Florence, or walk along ancient streets in Rome, you’ll snap many  gorgeous photos of Italy . That means you’ll need a phone battery that can keep up. Pack a small portable charger, and you won’t have to worry!
  • A reusable water bottle.  This isn’t just one of our  eco-friendly travel essentials . It’ll also save you money. Italy’s tap water is safe to drink, and you can fill your bottle with fresh, cold water at Roman aqueducts built thousands of years ago—so it’s an authentic experience, too. Just try not to ask bar or restaurant staff to refill it for you, as this isn’t common practice in Italy.

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Tailor-made Italy vacations shaped around your passions

Seat of the Roman Empire, leading light of the Renaissance and fervent advocate of la bella vita, Italy is renowned for its art, architecture, style and passion. Such is the depth of Italy’s cultural treasures, even the most modest church façade can hide work by the likes of Michelangelo. Our Italy specialists draw on their deep-seated connections with the country to help you unravel Italy’s well-known highlights, from Rome's ancient Colosseum to the untouched medieval towns of Tuscany and the lagoon city of Venice .

They also use their first-hand knowledge to show you Italy's lesser-known ways of life. You might find yourself truffle hunting with an expert and his dog in Tuscany’s hillsides, sampling street food in Palermo, Sicily, exploring the characterful villages of Puglia , or hiking through terraces of vines to reach the tiny villages of Liguria’s Cinque Terre. Whether you explore great cities, alpine lakes, or Roman relics, our specialists can help you unlock the hidden secrets and create the perfect vacation to Italy.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Italy

Modest tipping in Italy is the norm. Rounding up a restaurant bill by a few euros is perfectly sufficient, though if you wish to tip more (cash is preferred) for exceptional service it will always be welcomed. A 10% tip is considered usual in a restaurant but generous for a taxi ride.

For the latest travel advice for Italy, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

Italian is the official language of Italy, although English is spoken widely.

Italy’s currency is the euro.

Italy's wine and food are tied to the seasons and local landscape, so we suggest you sample the dishes and vintages that each region is known for. Visiting Emilia-Romagna, for example, you can visit the small family-run producers that create Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, and aceto balsamico di Modena (balsamic vinegar).

Rome’s food is often overlooked but we suggest fried artichokes (in the spring), pasta carbonara, pizza a taglio, and the city’s egg-shaped version of arancini, known as supplì. For more traditionally round arancini, head to Palermo , Sicily , where they’re a popular street food, alongside other well-known treats like cannoli.

Vineyards cover the country, from world-renowned regions like Chianti and Barolo to small-family run operations with just a few thousand bottles a year. No matter where you visit, we can arrange a tour and tasting at one of the local wineries, as well as more in-depth experiences, like a sommelier-led dinner.

Italy’s key attractions are food, wine, ancient and Renaissance history, and art, but what many visitors love best is the country’s pursuit of la dolce vita. To taste the sweet life yourself, you can venture into the country’s many renowned wine regions, like Barolo, where we can arrange a vineyard visit and wine tasting . Or you can head into the Tuscan hills to hunt for elusive truffles . Meet a nonna in her kitchen for a cooking class featuring her family’s heirloom recipes or sample Sicilian dishes on a guided food tour through Palermo .

Beyond Italy’s robust culinary traditions, you can also experience the country’s rich history and culture. In Rome, you can take a guided tour of the Vatican , see the Colosseum , and explore the city’s backstreets via Vespa , seeing places that only locals go. While in Venice, you might learn to make a Carnavale mask from a master artisan in his workshop.

For your first visit, you might want to visit the three best-known cities — Rome, Venice, and Florence. Known collectively as the Art Cities , these three ancient metropolises are treasure troves packed with museums, galleries, art, architecture, and archaeology, not to mention Michelin-starred restaurants, sunny cafes, and relaxed trattorias.

For some relaxation, oenophiles and gourmets may want to add a few days to lounge amid the sun-gilded hills of Tuscany , indulging in the food and wine that made the region renowned. If you’re looking for glamour, you can instead end your trip by heading north to the Italian Lakes region , which has attracted everyone from Roman emperors to Hollywood royalty. Or, head west to the Amalfi Coast for sun, sea, and sophisticated luxury.

Our specialists will build your trip to suit your personal tastes, but you can get inspired by browsing our example itineraries.

From converted family farms to city palaces, where you stay in Italy depends on where you’re visiting and your personal style. Cities offer a wide range of options, from opulent Renaissance palazzi that are the byword for European luxury to modern boutique hotels with just a few guests.

In the countryside, you might choose to stay on a working family farm that accepts guests — known as an agriturismo. These are often tucked into some of the most beautiful regions and can vary from rustic simplicity to lavish stays with pools, spas, Michelin-starred eateries, and other luxuries. In regions like the Amalfi Coast and the Lakes region, you can opt to stay in classic grand dame hotels, often built in the late 1800s or early 20th century. Our specialists have hand-picked some of the best places to stay in Italy on our  accommodation page .

A direct flight from New York City to Rome takes about 8.5 hours, depending on airline.

The best way of getting around Italy is via train. There’s a good network of high-speed trains between cities, making it easy and quick to move around. Within the cities, you can walk or take taxis.

Driving yourself is also an option — we can provide detailed driving directions. You’ll need your valid US driver's license as well as an official translation in Italian or an International Driving Permit.

The time zone in Italy is UTC +1.

Visitors from the US do not require a visa for travel to Italy. US passport holders are required to have at least six months validity remaining on their passports as well as two blank pages for the entry stamp. If you’re not a US passport holder, you can  check the visa requirements here .

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for Italy, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Your packing list for Italy should include modest clothing for religious sights, stylish outfits for dinner, comfortable shoes, a sun hat, and a small day bag that’s worn across your body. Additionally, we suggest you pack light if you’re catching a train — trains have limited space for luggage and few porters, so you’ll be managing your bags yourself.

Most churches and cathedrals, including the Vatican, won’t admit visitors with exposed knees, shoulders, cleavage, or midriffs, so plan to wear long pants or skirts, and modest tops when visiting those sights.

Fine-dining in Italy is an experience and very casual clothing is frowned upon, so pack some stylish, smart-casual outfits for eating in the evenings. Pizzeria’s are more relaxed, where casual clothing is normal.

For exploring, we strongly suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes and a sun hat, especially in the summer.

Food is serious business in Italy and following these rules will make your dining experience more pleasurable: consider making reservations, dress smartly, and expect a coperto (table charge) on the bill.

Your hotel concierge can make reservations for you — we suggest planning at least two or three days in advance if you want to eat at a certain restaurant at a certain time. Most Italians eat at 8 or later.

Almost every meal comes with a coperto — this small charge covers the table, which is yours for the night, as well as things like bread, oil, and vinegar. You’ll also (probably) pay separately for the water.

One last suggestion: Avoid eateries near any major sights, like the Vatican or Doge’s Palace. You’ll find much better food if you walk just fifteen minutes away.

In Italy, you’ll need a standard European-style, two-prong, type-C plug adapter. If you plan to bring electronic items that have a heavy draw, like a hairdryer, electric razor, or CPAP machine, you’ll also need a convertor.

Your hotel should be able to provide laundry services, but you can also pack laundry soap for washing small items in the bathroom sink.

Many museums and sights are closed on Mondays and sometimes Tuesday. Your specialist will arrange your trip with this in mind, but it’s something to consider when you’re planning how to spend your free time.

Many museums and other sights don’t allow backpacks or large bags — either you’ll have to stand in line to check the bag or you’ll be refused admission. Instead, we suggest bringing a satchel or cross-body bag that’s no bigger than a sheet of paper.

If you’re planning to use your phone in Italy, call your provider to determine what your overseas options are. You’ll have access to Wi-Fi in all your hotels as well as many sights and cafes, so some visitors prefer to put their phones on airplane mode and only use Wi-Fi.

A trattoria lunch in Orvieto

Enjoy lunch at a traditional trattoria in orvieto.

By definition, an Italian "trattoria" is an eatery that's a bit more formal than an "osteria" (which traditionally emphasize wine over the simple food they serve) but less formal than a "ristorante." In any case, the typical trattoria is a casual, welcoming establishment that serves plentiful portions of well-prepared local or regional specialties, often "family style" and without a printed menu. While visiting the Umbrian hill town of Orvieto, you'll enjoy a traditional lunch at just such a place – a trattoria about which one guest said, "the ambiance is rustic and down to earth... I almost felt like I was in someone's welcoming home dining room..."

The Westin Excelsior, Florence is an undisputed masterpiece in its own right: a stunning Renaissance palace with cutting-edge contemporary interiors, flawlessly paired with unique Renaissance features. The perfect mix of style and design, each of its guest rooms and suites is beautifully decorated in period style, offering a taste of Florentine tradition. No wonder it's been voted one of the 500 best hotels in the world by the readers of Travel + Leisure…

Ancient Pompeii... frozen in time

Back to 1st century pompeii.

Pompeii was a prosperous Roman city with a population of approximately 27,000 souls until August 24, 79 AD – the fateful day that Mount Vesuvius erupted and completely buried it and its inhabitants under a blanket of volcanic ash. And there it sat until its discovery by an architect more than 1,500 years later. It would be another 150 years before some of the world's earliest archaeologists began excavating the site in the 1740s, slowly revealing a city frozen in time. Today, as you walk with a local guide among the remains of Pompeii's buildings and streets – still an active archaeological site – you'll get a firsthand glimpse of what life might have been like in the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

From start to finish, this trip was so wonderful... Every day was special; I think I might actually take this same tour again in a few years!

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE:  Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS:   are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE:   Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S.,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here.

If you are a resident of another country,  please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Welcome to the fairytale countryside of Puglia’s Valle d’Itria! This area of Puglia starts from Putignano in the north to Ostuni in the south, and encompasses vineyards, never-ending olive groves, and of course the iconic coned roofs of Trulli, traditional stone huts that locals once lived in. We meet in the region’s vibrant capital Bari and whisk you away to a ‘locals only’ countryside restaurant nestled between the olive groves.

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable long lunch Pugliese style! Dish upon glorious dish will arrive as we sit back and get to know the group over crisp white Verdecca wine. Explore the charming property in between courses - there are beautiful flowers in bloom all through the garden and locals in the know enjoying quality time together.

Refortified and inspired after our first taste of Pugliese cuisine, we travel onwards to our gorgeous countryside masseria. Here you have time to unpack and relax. This luxurious country farm house hotel will be our home for the next few days and the perfect base to explore the wonders of land and sea close by.

Once you are settled in, get acquainted with the rest of our group and your host Olivia and indulge in a favourite Italian past-time: aperitivo. Relax with a spritz or glass of local wine as you soak in the beautiful location, before we sit down together to enjoy a traditional Pugliese dinner.

  • MEALS: Lunch with wine and Evening welcome aperitivo
  • ACCOMMODATION: Luxury 4 Star masseria country style hotel in the Valle d’Itria - Masseria San Michele or similar

This morning we hit the road for a seaside adventure in pretty Monopoli, where colorful fishing boats bob up and down in the turquoise Adriatic waters. Here we enjoy a short guided tour before you have time to wander on your own, popping into one of the many beautiful boutiques in town with gelato in hand.

With the sea breeze in our hair and tummies beginning to rumble, we’re back on the road to drive a short distance to a hidden away beachside ‘shack’ on the glorious Adriatic Sea for a tremendous seafood lunch together. Catch of the day fresh fish and shellfish carpaccio and seafood pasta awaits, washed down with a refreshing glass of Pugliese white wine of course. The restaurant is right on the beach - so pack your swimming costume if you’re keen for a dip!

Relaxed after our long lunch, we head inlands towards an up and coming winery in the Val d’Itria. This organic family-run winery is working to recover and enhance ancient native local vines including Verdeca and Primitivo varieties. Together we tour the estate and learn more about the fantastic work being done by this winery to produce top quality Pugliese wines and of course enjoy a tasting together.

This evening, we hit the road to visit one of the borghi più belli d’Italia (most beautiful villages of Italy) – Alberobello. This town is most famed for its trulli houses and was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996.

We meet our guide and enjoy a guided walking tour through this fairytale town that enchantss and delights all who go there. We follow our noses down the little lanes and go underground into one of the best restaurants in town where we have the chance to watch the team of chefs in the kitchen as they prepare our traditional feast!

  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Dinner with matching wines
  • ACTIVITIES: Guided walking tours of Monopoli and Alberobello, and winery visit
  • ACCOMMODATION: Luxury 4 Star masseria country style hotel in the Valle d’Itria

This morning we’re off to visit Baroque gem Martina Franca – one of the largest towns in the Valle d’Itria. The drive there is truly dreamy through the olive groves and red, red earth which seems even more intense against the backdrop of the bright blue sky. We have some free time to wander through the maze of winding alleys and whitewashed buildings in the historic centre.

After our walk, you’ve surely built up an appetite so we venture to a neighbouring town for a stop at a caseificio (dairy). Here we taste the traditional cheeses of Puglia and discover their unique production techniques. Relax in the outdoor terrace as we have a deliciously cheesey light lunch together.

Pugliese ceramics are famous throughout Italy and we’re about to find out why. This afternoon, we drive to Grottaglie – a town known for its artisan crafts and quality product. Here we visit a ‘secret garden’ - our lips are sealed as to what makes this just so special…Afterwards, we continue onto our guide’s workshop and watch artisans at work before having some time to wander (and shop) through the array of fantastic ceramic shops in the quartiere di ceramiche (ceramics quarter).

Stop for a caffe’ where you will drink out of quite possibly the country’s most beautiful tazze (cups) and observe even the local dogs drinking out of beautifully crafted water bowls.

italy tour summer 2023

Today we explore one of the most picturesque towns in all of Puglia – Polignano a Mare. Renowned for its characteristic beach nestled between the cliffs, we will have plenty of time for photos, exploring and watching daring locals leap from the cliffs into the sea.

Our guide shares stories as we stroll through this pretty town before enjoying free time to wander, swim or shop.

We meet again for a seafood lunch at a casual local eatery. Try the local crudo (raw fish) or enjoy a seafood panino! Don’t leave town without a fortifying glass of ‘caffe speciale’ either - it’s a hyper local drink from Polignano itself.

In the afternoon, we journey back to our Masseria where you can relax, read, or go for a swim or a walk around the property. Tonight, we will be rolling up our sleeves and learning how to make the traditional pasta of Puglia (orecchiette), as well as some other local dishes. Relax with a delicious dinner and local wine – we’ve earned it!

  • ACTIVITIES: Polignano visit and tour, Cooking class

Sometimes called the ‘Florence of the South’, today we visit truly beautiful (and unique) Lecce. This Baroque town is famous for its many churches, but perhaps above all else its stunning golden sandstone buildings.

Enjoy some free time this morning wandering the streets and shopping in the many excellent artisan workshops. You have free time for lunch - our tip? Don’t miss a ‘rustico’ and caffe lecesse! This local pastry is filled with piping hot passata (tomato sauce) and oozing mozzarella, and is even more delicious than it sounds. The famed caffe’ lecesse – a cold coffee drink with almond flavouring that is very refreshing on a warm day is sure to be a hit too. We’ll share our favourite addresses to find them.

This afternoon we meet our local guide for a walk through the historical centre of Lecce which includes a stop at the Roman amphitheatre, the cathedral and hidden sights down the city’s many picturesque laneways.

Did you know Puglia is famous for olive oil? In fact, the region produces around 40% of Italy’s total supply. Relax as we head to a nearby olive grove for a guided tour before enjoying an extra virgin olive oil tasting of three different varieties. We learn how extra virgin olive oil is made and what to look for when tasting and buying a top quality product.

This evening, we head to nearby Ostuni - an incredibly beautiful whitewashed jewel of a town in Puglia. It sits high perched on a hill with a fabulous view over the coast. We meet our local guide for a quick orientation tour before you have free time to explore its nooks and crannies or enjoy an aperitivo. We meet again a little later to enjoy a delicious dinner together.

  • ACTIVITIES: Lecce and Ostuni visits and tours, Olive oil grove visit

We say farewell to our beautiful masseria today, and travel outside of Puglia to the region of Basilicata. On our way, we make a stop to get to know the capital of Puglia a little better.

A lively and exhilarating port city, Bari has fascinating sights, sounds and food waiting for us to discover. We spend our time in Bari enjoying a fantastic historic walking tour with a focus on local food traditions including a wander around the fish market, and watching local women roll orecchiette (local pasta) in the street.

Barese focaccia is made with semolina flour and potato and is studded with tomatoes and olives. It’s delicious and the perfect snack to munch on as we stroll along the beautiful lungomare (promenade) soaking up the atmosphere.

This afternoon we are off to the truly unique city of Matera. Famous for its sassi or cave dwellings, built into the cliff face, many date back to the Palaeolithic era, meaning the city is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world.

We check in at our luxury cave hotel for a truly once in a lifetime stay. This afternoon, you have free time to explore or indulge in our unique dwelling for the night before our evening ‘rooftop’ aperitivo with an incredible view.

Matera is ethereally beautiful at nighttime, so make sure to take it all in as the sun sinks below the horizon. Afterwards, we wander over to a local restaurant. It’s our final dinner together tonight and we try some local specialities of the Basilicata region (including fantastic local bread).

  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Aperitivo, Dinner with wine
  • ACTIVITIES: Bari food and walking tour
  • ACCOMMODATION: Luxury 4 Star cave hotel in Matera

Blown away by incredible Matera, we enjoy a final lunch where we try favorite dishes from our week together mixed in with local Basilicata specialties.

10. Ofanto: a natural park with a story to tell

Ofanto River Regional Natural Park is characterised by a strong cultural and territorial identity with its important archaeological, historical and naturalistic heritage. It is a territory to be explored that hides dozens of treasures, an opportunity to immerse yourself in the green and often uncontaminated and mysterious nature of Puglia.

The Ofanto river has been an important presence in Italy since ancient Roman times and with its 170 kilometres it is the longest river to flow into the Adriatic, crossing three regions. However, it is in Puglia that it hides its best treasures, gathered in the Regional Nature Park which embraces 11 Apulian municipalities.

The Ofanto River Regional Natural Park was established in 2007 and is a protected natural area that encloses an incredible natural value. The river and its surroundings can offer numerous specimens of local poplars and oaks to the animals found here in their natural habitat for a full immersion in Italian nature.

Inside the park, you can carry out various outdoor activities  both as a tourist and as a sportsman, such as long excursions on horseback , up to canoe and kayak trips along the river.

Perhaps the most interesting project, however, is the Ofanto Cycle Route , recently completed in its Apulian section. This is a cycle path that accompanies the Ofanto river on its journey and allows visitors to explore the park through themed itinerarie s, in a respectful exchange between man and nature, in a respectful exchange between man and nature.

9. Ostia: the archaeological pearl in the South of Rome

Ostia Antica

South of Rome is one of the pearls of Lazio and Italy as a whole, Lido di Ostia or simply Ostia . It is a place that extends the beauty and historical and cultural grandeur of Rome to the sea, maintaining and enhancing its cultural identity . Its foundation dates back to the reign of Anco Marzio when it was transformed from a strategic military base of the kingdom of Rome into a tourist and commercial centre of the Roman Empire.

The present inhabited centre was built at the beginning of the twentieth century to provide the city of Rome, again, an outlet to the sea. Ostia is often a destination for those who want to spend a day away from the chaos of the capital, walking along the seashore on the black sand beaches. What distinguishes Ostia is its retro charm with buildings and bathing establishments that recall Italy in the 1950s. Among the things not to be missed is the brand new seafront promenade, the small fishing village and Tor San Michele , one of the remains of the medieval fortifications of the ancient village.

However, Ostia is famous, above all for Ostia Antica , the centre built in the 4th century BC, which together with Pompeii is the largest archaeological site in Europe . Currently just under half of the ancient city has been brought to light with the baths of Neptune and the necropolis that are the masters, together with the baths of the Sette Sapienti and the wonderful Roman theatre, which could accommodate 4000 people.

8. Altamura: the city of bread a stone's throw from Matera

Altamura

The next destination, not to be missed, we suggest is Altamura , famous all over the world for its bread. It is a city where the environment, culture and gastronomic tradition intertwine in a vortex of rare and unique beauty. A destination that offers many different types of ideas and which can change according to your preferences.

The city of bread , a few kilometres from Matera, is located in the Murgia, the Apulian karst plateau, characterized by light and white rocks and where a particular and very good quality of wheat grows, exported throughout Italy. It is a destination of historical and early historical interest which still maintains its identity today. Among the most beautiful things to see there is certainly the majestic Cathedral of Altamura, built at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia, with its rich Baroque style inside and with the two bell towers that make the facade symmetrical.

Another attraction is the Caves of Altamura where the remains of a Neanderthal man were found. The famous man of Altamura has a date of about 130-190 thousand years ago.

7. Cesenatico: the seaside village of good living

Visualizza questo post su Instagram Un post condiviso da Visit Italy ® (@visititaly)

Cesenatico

Cesenatico is a seaside village nestled in the heart of the Romagna Riviera. The online social campaign promoted by the village itself has led it to be one of the most sought-after destinations by Italians in recent years and even in 2023 it is a destination not to be missed.

The seaside village is waiting to be discovered with the colourful historic centre, divided in two by a row of ancient sails that colour the Leonardo Porto Canale . A village of sailors and fishermen that still retains the colours of the houses and the particular character that the village of good living can offer. Cesenatico is the ideal destination for a beach holiday on the Adriatic coast with wide beaches full of attractions for children, camping enthusiasts and water games.

6. Orvieto: the most famous village in Italy not to be missed

Orvieto: the most famous village in Italy not to be missed

Orvieto is one of the oldest and most visited cities in Italy. It has very ancient origins but is famous for its morphological and architectural beauty, for these reasons in recent years, it has been the destination of many tourists who have made it a real social media star with hundreds of posts dedicated to this small village perched on the ridge of tuff in the middle of Umbria

Despite these characteristics, the merit of Orvieto's fame is mainly due to the magnificent Cathedral homonym. It is an example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, very rich in works of art, which houses the Sacred Corporal inside. But there are also many other attractions such as the well of San Patrizio, an incredible work of civil engineering from the sixteenth century.

5. Chioggia: the little Venice

2023023616-Chioggia.jpg

In 2022 Chioggia was included by the New York Times among the must-see destinations in Italy as an alternative , or even privileged, destination compared to its bigger and more famous sister, Venice. The small lagoon city is considered the "Little Venice" and it is a beautiful reality.

The name "Little Venice" derives from the proximity but also from the urban characteristics, which recall those of the Serenissima Venice. It is composed of a system of islets divided by canals on which fields, alleys and historical buildings, sacred buildings and museums find space. As demonstrated by the interest of the New York Times, Chioggia deserves much more than the stereotyped alternative to Venice. It has a respectable history, given that it is also before Venice as mentioned above and its origin can be placed on a project by the Romans. Among the most valuable architecture to see there is the Palazzo del Municipio and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

4. Cilento: a land of authenticity

"The secret charm of an authentic land" is a concise but meaningful description that has supported Cilento in recent years . A land that hides and preserves a series of natural, cultural, historical and architectural beauties that the whole world envies us, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park . The Cilento National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 and includes beauties such as the archaeological park of Paestum, the Certosa di Padula, as well as beautiful villages halfway between the sea and the mountains such as Palinuro and Marina di Camerota.

It is one of the most popular tourist destinations for all the tourists who come to these areas, especially during the summer, when hundreds of events and shows are organized to spend an unforgettable holiday in one of the most beautiful places in Italy and the world.

The Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park is among the destinations not to be missed for 2023 and also for food, even the culinary tradition of this land has entered the UNESCO World Heritage list: the famous Mediterranean diet . A diet that combines a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet with local and genuine products.

3. Castiglione della Pescaia: the Switzerland of Maremma

Castiglione della Pescaia

One of the best destinations not to be missed is undoubtedly Castiglione Della Pescaia , a Tuscan town in the northern Maremma. It is one of the main Tuscan destinations for summer tourism with its beautiful sea and breathtaking views.

Despite being a very small town, it has often been awarded by Legambiente (5 Sails in 2005 and 2014, 2015 and 2016) and by the Touring Club for its immense beauty and cleanliness, so much so that it is also known by the name of "Switzerland of the Maremma".

In advance of European regulations, since 2019, Castiglione della Pescaia adhered to a  plastic-free policy , with a ban on the sale and distribution of single-use plastic throughout the whole municipality.

2. Urbino: heart of the Italian Renaissance

Urbino

One of the best last destinations not to be missed for 2023 is undoubtedly Urbino , a Renaissance city par excellence designed to be the ideal city of the sixteenth century. Among the most important Italian Renaissance centres and art city , it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has given birth to some of the best artists and cultural men of Italian history such as Raffaello Sanzio, Piero Della Francesca and Federico da Montefeltro.

As part of the great communication campaign carried out in recent years by the Marche Region , Urbino has been able to stand out in its essence as city of art, from its communication, to the streets of the historic centre that give you the feeling of reliving an important piece of Italian history, the Renaissance.

Among the things that you absolutely must not miss while visiting Urbino there is undoubtedly the Palazzo Ducale , an expression of the ideal city, built in about 30 years, as well as the house that gave birth to Raffaello Sanzio.

1. Northern Sardinia: nature, events and culture

2023024454-sardegna-del-nord.jpg

In the heart of the Mediterranean Sea lies one of the most visited and sought-after beautiful Italian land in the world, Sardinia . Known throughout the world for its beautiful beaches and pristine sea, particularly in the northern part it has a constellation of natural, historical and cultural attractions not to be missed. Among the most fascinating areas of northern Sardinia , there is undoubtedly Gallura with all its pristine beaches and one of the fashionable areas par excellence, the Costa Smeralda.

Visiting Northern Sardinia is an experience both for the whole family and as a couple or with friends from the Maddalena archipelago to the historical and cultural riches of cities such as Sassari and Alghero. In addition to the high density of natural beauties, Sardinia hosts cultural and tourist events and festivals that promote and enrich it throughout the year. One of the most important exhibitions in Northern Sardinia is that of Salude e Trigu which for years has been collecting and enhancing all the best events held in Northern Sardinia both in summer and in autumn.

Morgan wallen’s summer smash leads to a record-tying achievement.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 23: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Morgan Wallen performs onstage during the ... [+] 2022 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on September 23, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morgan Wallen is the second musical act to claim back-to-back Song of the Summer winners, following Andy Gibb in the '70s, as "I Had Some Help" with Post Malone wins the season. (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for iHeartRadio)

Morgan Wallen has scored two No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 in America throughout his career. One hit the top spot on the competitive tally in 2023, while the second ruled for several frames earlier this summer. The latter track now helps the country musician make history, as it’s earned a very special and highly coveted honor in the U.S. music industry.

“I Had Some Help” has been named the Song of the Summer by Billboard . The track, which is fronted by Post Malone and features Wallen, ruled the seasonal Songs of the Summer chart for all 14 weeks it was around. Now that September has returned, the tally is no more, and a winner has been decided.

Wallen is not new to the Songs of the Summer chart. In fact, he claimed the top smash last season as well—and that’s a very, very rare feat.

2023’s Song of the Summer was Wallen’s own “Last Night,” which brought him to the top of the Hot 100 for the first time. He is now just the second musician to claim back-to-back champions on the Songs of the Summer chart.

According to Billboard , only one other name has claimed the honorable Song of the Summer title two years in a row. Andy Gibb, the younger brother of the Bee Gees members, became the first to do so back in the ‘70s. His single “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” won in 1977, and then the following year, his hit “Shadow Dancing” managed to do the same.

“I Had Some Help” was a massive single from the moment it was released, so the fact that it has earned the title of Song of the Summer isn’t very surprising. Anyone who had been watching the Songs of the Summer chart throughout June, July, and August would also have seen this coming, as the cut never fell from the No. 1 spot—despite tough competition from names like Shaboozey and Sabrina Carpenter.

  • Was this the summer European tourism reached a breaking point?

Protesters staging hunger strikes against tourism developments. Local officials threatening to cut off water to illegal vacation rentals. Residents spraying tourists with water pistols.

With Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, upon us, European hot spots like Barcelona, Spain; Athens, Greece; and the Greek island of Santorini have reached a breaking point, making tourists the targets of a major backlash. While final visitor numbers for this summer aren’t in, they are expected to surpass 2019 levels; in the second quarter alone, international arrivals exceeded 2019 by 6%, according to the European Travel Commission.

Climate change has also put tremendous pressure on popular destinations. July was the planet’s 14th consecutive month of record heat, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Spain and Greece experienced some of their hottest days on record, with temperatures higher than 114 degrees Fahrenheit.

While tourism is a critical economic driver for many European destinations, some residents argue that more tourism revenue needs to be invested in communities and infrastructure.

“We have been invaded by tourists; the situation is out of control,” said Camila Guzman, 32, a resident of Palma, on the Spanish island of Majorca. Guzman participated in the July protests that drew more than 50,000 people. Prices have been pushed up so much, she said, that “we cannot afford to live here anymore.”

Elsewhere, locals have rallied against disrespectful tourist behavior and new hotel and villa construction. Some places are imposing visitor caps. For example, Île-de-Bréhat, a French island off the coast of Brittany with just 400 residents, recently imposed a limit of 4,700 visitors per day.

The pandemic, too, exacerbated local grievances after residents got a taste of life without tourists. When travel restrictions were lifted, the crowds came back in droves.

“This summer is the perfect storm, with a combination of issues, including excessive numbers, bad behavior and climate change,” said Richard Butler, professor emeritus in hospitality and tourism management at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and the author of several books on overtourism.

At the end of a frenzied summer, we look at some of the breaking points.

Athens, Greece

The influx of tourists this summer put Athens under tremendous strain as it grappled with excessive heat, as well as water shortages. Wildfires, which broke out across Greece, have engulfed the forests in the Attica region, even spreading to the suburbs of Athens.

As temperatures soared above 107 in July, authorities shut down the Acropolis during the hottest hours. Last year, the ancient site introduced a ticketing system to manage visitor numbers, with a cap of 20,000 per day.

Protests against overtourism flared in Athens in July, with “No tourists” graffiti emblazoned on buildings and residents calling for measures against vacation rentals, which they say are taking over entire neighborhoods.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini, famous for its whitewashed buildings and sunsets, was one of the most overtouristed destinations in Europe last year, drawing nearly 3.5 million visitors to an island of 15,500. Cruise ships — 800 vessels brought in 1.3 million visitors — were a major source of foot traffic, according to the Hellenic Ports Association.

More recently, residents were outraged when Panagiotis Kavallaris, president of the island’s municipal community, posted on social media, urging locals to limit their movements to accommodate more than 11,000 cruise passengers who were expected to arrive July 24. The post was later deleted, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported, and the mayor, Nikolaos Zorzos, said the island would reinstate a cap of 8,000 passengers per day, down from what would have been 17,000 starting in 2025.

Elsewhere in Greece, at least six foreign tourists, including BBC television journalist Michael Mosley, were believed to have died from heat exhaustion. The dry conditions and pressure put on water supplies by tourism developments also led to water shortages across the country, causing islands like Sifnos and Crete to declare a state of emergency.

In the first six months of this year, the number of tourists visiting Spain increased by 13.3% and exceeded 42.5 million, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Many cities are taking action. For example, Seville is cracking down on vacation rentals, after a court ruling cleared the mayor’s office to conduct a review and cut off the water supply to illegal vacation rentals. And in Barcelona, the Neighborhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth organization called for an overhaul of the city’s tourism model, including restricting the number of cruise ships and regulating short-term rentals. The city government said it would eliminate such rentals by the end of 2028 and announced a tourism tax increase that will go into effect in October.

In many places, residents staged protests and collected signatures to pressure government officials to take action.

Demonstrations have been held in Majorca, Málaga, the Canary Islands and Barcelona. In April, activists in Tenerife staged a hunger strike to protest two major tourism developments.

“Residents are living in makeshift shacks because they can’t afford their homes while millions of euros are being invested into megatourism projects,” said Javier Toro, a 23-year-old Tenerife resident who participated in the protests.

Venice, Italy

In April, Venice, a city of 50,000 that received 20 million travelers last year, introduced a 5 euro entrance fee (about $5.60) aimed at dissuading day-trippers from visiting at peak times.

The pilot program, which ended in July, was declared a success by the city’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, who said it generated 2.43 million euros, but critics said the fee did little to curb numbers. Local officials said that funds from the fee would help them plan for next year.

Many residents said the city should focus on more pressing issues like regulating short-term rentals and improving local services.

“The 5 euro fee is a joke for tourists; they will spend more money on a beer,” said Lorenzo Cataldi, a tour guide. He also criticized the city’s new 25-person cap on tour groups, saying it did little to prevent overcrowding: It just meant groups were split between two guides but still stayed close together.

Lisbon, Portugal

The narrow streets of Portugal’s capital became so congested with tuk-tuks and tourists that some residents said they were reluctant to leave their homes this summer.

“It’s like walking outside of a football stadium after a match — complete chaos and I don’t recognize my neighbors anymore,” said Ann Cal, 68, a resident of the Alfama neighborhood, which she said has been overrun with vacation rentals. “Some days I do not want to leave my apartment.”

A housing group in Lisbon has started a campaign to hold a referendum that would ban vacation rentals in residential buildings. The group said it has collected enough signatures to present the project to the local council.

Last month, the Lisbon City Council announced that it would limit the number of licenses and parking spaces issued to tuk-tuk drivers to help ease congestion.

Amsterdam, one of the most heavily touristed cities in the world, drew a record 23 million visitors last year. After the pandemic, it introduced a series of stringent measures, including a 20 million cap on annual visitors.

Over the past year, tourism taxes have been raised; the number of cruise ships, which are now barred from docking in the city center, has been limited; new hotel construction has been outlawed; and vacation rentals have been restricted.

The city is also cracking down on bad behavior with a “Stay away” campaign, primarily aimed at unruly British male tourists between the ages of 18 and 35, who have developed a reputation for drinking too much and harassing residents.

The online campaign targets potential offenders with videos showing the consequences of anti-social behavior, including arrests and fines. The city has also banned the use of marijuana on the street and is taking steps to discourage alcohol sales in the red-light district.

Korn Ferry Tour

Frederik Kjettrup clinches Korn Ferry Tour card by making PGA TOUR Americas history

Tour Insider

Finished No. 8 on PGA TOUR University Ranking, then won three times this summer

Change Text Size

Frederik Kjettrup didn’t really know what to expect this summer on PGA TOUR Americas. It’s a professional circuit, of course. It was his first go-around after completing a successful collegiate career at Florida State and finishing eighth on the PGA TOUR University Ranking to earn status. The unknown made it hard to fully grasp the level of play, how deep the fields would go, and how to navigate the mental preparedness that comes with a big-time career change.

“I just wanted to go play well and see where that put me,” he said, “and obviously that’s turned out pretty good.”

For all the introspective queries about how this season could have turned out for the 24-year-old from Aabybro, Denmark (the English pronunciation is ah-bye-bro) the 2024 season in North America has gone well. Extremely well, in fact.

Kjettrup has won three times – his first two starts, along with the season’s penultimate event, last week’s CRMC Championship presented by Gertens, to notch the circuit’s first-ever Three-Victory Promotion. Six players had won twice in a season since 2020, when the Three-Victory Promotion was installed as a reward, but none had managed to tilt a trio of trophies.

Kjettrup earned immediate Korn Ferry Tour membership with his third win and will be fully exempt on the Korn Ferry Tour through 2025 (he isn’t eligible for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, which uses the Korn Ferry Tour Points List to determine eligibility). Kjettrup, who finished runner-up at the NCAA Individual Men’s Golf Championship earlier this year, won three PGA TOUR Americas trophies in just 10 weeks.

“It feels really good. Words can’t really describe it,” Kjettrup said after his third win Sunday. “A step in the right direction and a step up the ladder. I’m really excited.”

This week marks the PGA TOUR Americas season finale, the limited-field Fortinet Cup Championship at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley’s North Course (the host club of the 2025 RBC Canadian Open). Despite his three wins, Kjettrup will head into the final event of the year ranked second in the season-long Fortinet Cup standings by about 200 points behind American John Keefer. Keefer has been a model of consistency this season, with eight top-10 finishes in nine tournaments. He has one win with four runner-up results. Canada’s Matthew Anderson rounds out the top three in the standings, just 400 points behind Keefer’s lead.

For Kjettrup, his main end-of-season goal has already been achieved as he’s off to the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025. He doesn’t have to stress, per se, about this week’s finale. But he’s still as motivated as ever to end the season the way he started – in the winner’s circle.

“You show up at a golf tournament and you try to win it,” he said.

Kjettrup’s summer success, he said, can be attributed to his putting. After a springtime visit from his coach, he was able to get that more consistent. Pair that with some great ball-striking and he was compiling the tournament-winning scores. But while his game was trending very much in the right direction, he was still working through the big change between college golf and professional golf.

The physical strain on going back-to-back so frequently – without a return to his home base, like with amateur or college golf – was a lot.

“On Tour, you’re playing four weeks in a row and … you just keep going. That’s a big change. You’re just trying to find balance,” Kjettrup said.

Mentally, too, the professional pivot was a lot. In college there’s a tough schedule to work through with classes and homework, working out, and having practice every day – with travel sprinkled in for events. On Tour, there is more time to rest between rounds. But he’s found a routine that works.

“To rest, mentally, is more important than physically. They go hand-in-hand sometimes, but I’ve found it’s (tougher) mentally than physical,” Kjettrup said. “If your mind starts to feel tired, your body feels tired. It might be in your head that’s doing it.”

While Kjettrup’s map is firmly pointed towards the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour, the final destination was very much earned after a celebrated career across the Atlantic as an up-and-coming golf star. He had been to the United States a few times before college on vacation but admitted he didn’t know much about college golf. One thing he did know was, at that point, he wasn’t ready to turn professional yet.

“I figured there was an opportunity to go that way and improve my game and play elite golf courses and in big tournaments,” Kjettrup said. “It was a stepping ladder for me.”

Kjettrup visited a couple of schools – he had just one rule, he wanted to be able to play golf year-round – and as he would be coming from Denmark, going to school on the east coast of the U.S. was almost a given. Florida State stood out for a few reasons.

“The program, facility, the tournaments they played, the alumni that came out … if you wanted to be an elite-level golfer, you could do that at Florida State,” Kjettrup said.

After earning full status for PGA TOUR Americas this summer via PGA TOUR University, Kjettrup said he spoke with his team about an approach to his schedule. With limited Korn Ferry Tour starts on the horizon, they firmed up a strategy to play for that status for next year. If he ended up in half the events he hoped for on Korn Ferry Tour and half on PGA TOUR Americas, then he’d only have played a quarter of a season – which, zooming out, seemed silly. It was “hard to do too much,” he thought.

So, he went out and won the first event of his PGA TOUR Americas career. And the next one. And again, last week. Mission accomplished. Kjettrup has played well and is off to the Korn Ferry Tour for 2025 – things have turned out pretty good indeed.
