OUR TWO RIVER BANKS

We have set for ourselves two main objectives as a church, we call them our “Riverbanks.”

Riverbanks help direct a flow of water to its end destination and, more importantly, ensure that the river does not become stagnant or worse a swamp.

journey queens church

To Know Jesus

Matthew 22:37-40 (ESV)

37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

This translates to how we relate to each other, and all that we do in our local church, from Sunday corporate gatherings to prayer meetings and J Kidz or any of our leadership training and equipping courses. We want to know Jesus Christ in an ever deeper, ever growing way!

To Make Him Known

Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Making Christ known guides all that we do in our community and around the world. It’s about how we relate to each other, our families, our neighborhood, city, region, and nation.

It’s about multiplying across Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Queens and even the world. Our strategy is about ‘going’, not ‘attracting’. We want to be a healthy local church that is active in our community for Christ. We want to stay mobile, flexible and relational.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

Because we all come from many different backgrounds and cultures and our share of experiences, you might want to discuss the following with one of our elders for further clarity. We encourage questions, so ask away!

We establish all of our doctrine explicitly and exclusively from the Bible.  We regard the following doctrines as essential, though there are many non-essential doctrines on which we have a perspective (also derived from Biblical conviction). Non-essential doctrines are important but not crucial to a believer’s walk with God. Therefore, we will not allow non-essential doctrines to take priority over those doctrines we see as explicit and essential.

During the 16th century, some 500 years ago, Jesus intervened in the life of the church. The church had moved away from truth and needed correction. Jesus brought that correction in the form of the Reformation.

During the Reformation, there were five areas of emphasis that emerged with great significance. It is from these same five Latin phrases that we get our foundational statement of faith.

journey queens church

SOLA SCRIPTURA

The Bible alone is the sole authority for all matters of faith and practice. Scripture and Scripture alone is the standard by which all teachings and traditions of the church must be measured.

journey queens church

SOLA GRATIA

Through grace alone are we saved. Salvation is proof of God’s undeserved favor; we are rescued from God’s wrath by His grace alone, not by any work we do. God loves us just the way we are, not as we should be!

journey queens church

By faith alone do we receive God’s salvation and all of God’s promises. We have faith in Jesus, believing that He is God’s son, who died for our sins. We are declared righteous by God (justified) on the basis of our faith alone and not by works.

journey queens church

SOLA CHRISTUS

Jesus is the Lord and Savior of the church. No one and nothing else can save. Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross is sufficient for our justification and reconciliation to God the Father.

journey queens church

SOLA DEO GLORIA

To God alone is praise and glory due. Salvation is of God and has been accomplished by God for His glory alone. As Christians, we must magnify Him always and live our lives in His presence, under His authority, and for His glory.

What we Believe

We invite you to explore our beliefs and join us in our pursuit of living out our faith in boldness and passion.

The Trinity

There is one God, the Creator of all things, who is eternally self-existent – one God but in three persons. This doctrine is a mystery but is nevertheless true. We believe in God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit. Each member of the Trinity has different functions. Each shares every divine attribute and is equal in power and authority.

God the Father

God the Father is holy and perfect. He is all-powerful, always good, always faithful and ever reaching out to us with the good news of His grace through His Son Jesus Christ, through whom He offers us redemption and eternal relationship. He is the perfect Father who is never changing in His love, compassion and grace for us. He is always longing for humanity to be restored to Him through faith in Jesus Christ, His Son.

God the Son (JESUS CHRIST)

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, Mary. He is fully “true man” and fully “true God.” He is the only one who can reconcile us to God the Father. He lived a perfect sinless life and was crucified on the cross, where He paid the price for our sins and our shame – the very things that separated us from God. He died for us, was buried and was resurrected so that we may have eternal life. He is the Head of the Church and in all this He has preeminence. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father where He rules and reigns as the King of kings and the Lord of lords who will soon return to make all things new. Jesus opened the way for man to live eternally in God.

God the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit – God Himself – lives in every Christian from the moment they put their faith in Jesus. He guides us into all truth and reveals to us God’s righteousness and convicts us of our sin. He assures us of our salvation, comforts us, guides us and sanctifies us. The church, from the beginning, was birthed in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and of His power. His presence and power, manifest in numerous ways including signs, miracles and wonders. His Power is available and needed just as much now as it was at the birth of the church. We also believe that the Holy Spirit empowers Christians through dispensing numerous gifts to continue the work of Jesus in this world, which in the Bible is called “The Kingdom.”

Relationships Matter to US

Relationships take the priority – not performance, skill or giftings. We see fellowship as a core value established by God in his Church from the beginning (Acts 2:42 | John 15:13).

We believe that all Christians, once they put their faith in Jesus, should be baptized in water (full immersion) as a statement to themselves, their community and even Satan that they are now “within Christ” and therefore no longer “in sin.”

Participating not Spectating

In line with “relationships matter to us” (above), no believer in Jesus should live as an island but ought to be integrated into a local church and fulfill the ministry God has given them there.

Truth Before Tradition

What we see in the Scriptures always supersedes any tradition. Our theology fashions our behaviour, not the other way around. (2 Timothy 2:15)

God has established that local elders should lead a local church – not a headquarters, an arch-bishop, the state or any other kind of authority figure.

Our relationship with other churches, organizations and denominations does not override this Biblical value as we are not in a denomination of any kind.

Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up: we had some technical difficulties during this recording, and the audio quality isn't up to our usual standards. 4 Orthodox monasteries to visit near Moscow

journey queens church

Over the last two decades, growing spiritual fervor has led to the restoration of several historic Russian Orthodox monasteries in central Russia. These monasteries stand out for their architectural beauty and their peaceful environs. RBTH takes you on a voyage to four beautiful monasteries that are located within a few hours from the Russian capital.

Featuring the icon of Mary the Milk Giver, the main cathedral, which was consecrated in 1860, is only open during prayer services.

There are several smaller structures in the complex, as well as a tranquil garden. Overall, the complex has a 19 th century feel to it.

Several buses depart from Tula’s Moskovsky Railway Station for a 10-minute ride to the monastery. A train ride to Tula from Moscow’s Kursky Railway Station takes about two hours.

St. Paphnutius, the son of a baptized Tatar, was a diligent monk known for his love and compassion. He spent 63 years of his life as a monk and founded the monastery in Borovsk in 1444. The original stone cathedral had icons painted by Dionisy, one of Russia’s greatest icon artists.

The countryside around the monastery is particularly picturesque and it’s worth walking from the railway station to the monastery to capture the atmosphere of a small Russian town.

Borovsk can be reached by suburban trains from Moscow’s Kievsky Railway Station. The journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The monastery was founded by Savva Storozhevsky, a disciple of Russian Saint Sergius of Radonezh . It has an impressive set of buildings, including the main Nativity Cathedral. Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich chose the monastery as his suburban residence in 1650 and the complex still has his white stone royal palace.

The monastery, which was partly destroyed during the Soviet era, has been completely restored.  Located on a hilltop, it is about a 20-minute walk from the city center.

A courtyard in central Moscow built by The Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery. Tverskaya street, bld. 6. Photo credit: Lori/Legion-Media

The monastery has a bakery, café and viewing deck for looking out over the countryside, and it is worth trekking down the hill towards the Moscow River. Another highlight is the natural spring in the hermitage. Devotees go for three brief dips in the pool where the spring water flows. But be warned: The water is bone-chillingly cold, even in summer.

Suburban trains run regularly from Moscow’s Belorussky Railway Station to Zvenigorod. The journey takes an hour.

The monastery managed to survive the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 but was destroyed by Nazi German forces during World War II. The Voskresensky Cathedral is still being restored. There is also an excellent museum, which highlights the art, history architecture and religious heritage of the Middle East.

Istra can be reached by suburban trains from Moscow’s Rizhsky Railway Station. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

Patriarch of Moscow Consecrates Ex-Anglican Church

October 17, 2016 By Fr. John 4 Comments

Patriarch of Moscow has consecrated a reconstructed ex-Anglican Cathedral as a new Orthodox Cathedral in London, UK

Hundreds of people including the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Michael of Kent gathered in London’s Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints to attend a historic service conducted by the head of Russia’s Orthodox Church.

Up to one thousand people attended the ceremonies on Sunday, according to the patriarch’s press service. Click here for RT International video news report.

The service included the consecration of London’s largest Orthodox Christian Cathedral, which had undergone a major refurbishment, and the Divine Liturgy, commemorating the 300th anniversary of the presence of the Russian Orthodox Church in the British Isles. During the service Patriarch Kirill prayed for “all the Saints who shone forth in the British land”and dedicated the Orthodox hymn “Many Years” to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom and Russia.

kirill-2

After the Service, Patriarch Kirill addressed the people who gathered for festivities, emphasizing that both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England play a critical role in international relations and peace building, even under the current political circumstances.

“The Church is a community open to everyone, [it] erases all human controversies. Even a very rich man stands next to the poor one, high-ranking officials stand next to the common people. The Church should also play a role in international relations. Through faith, through the church the soul of a nation is manifested.” “These two nations connected by centuries-old history know and respect one another. Hopefully this potential will develop further for a better future in the relations between our peoples,” the patriarch conveyed.

He remembered with gratitude Anthony of Sourozh, the founder and for many years bishop – then archbishop, then metropolitan – of the Diocese of Sourozh, the Patriarchate of Moscow’s diocese for Great Britain and Ireland. The patriarch said that he helped the residents of the British Isles understand Russian Orthodoxy and focused on improving the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England.

Patriarch Kirill also commemorated the reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) and the Russian Orthodox Church. The two reunited in 2007 after 80 years of separation following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

“The London community has mirrored the most difficult time in the history of our country and our church,” Patriarch Kirill stressed.

Among hundreds of attendees, Prince Michael of Kent, first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, attended the holy Service. He is distantly related to the Russian royal Romanov dynasty, shows a great interest in Russia and takes part in a number of charitable projects.

kirill-a

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the Bishop of London Richard Chartres also attended the events, along with representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and the UK’s local Orthodox Churches, the Diocese of Sourozh and parishes from different parts of England, Scotland and Ireland, senior British officials, members of parliament, as well as ambassadors. Some 900 invitations had been handed out prior to the event, but when the Service started, anyone who wanted to attend the service was allowed to enter.

Patriarch Kirill is to spend four days in London. It is his first visit to the UK in his current role. It’s also the first time in 25 years that the Head of the Russian Orthodox Church has visited the country. Prior to this, Patriarch Alexy II, Patriarch Kirill’s predecessor, visited the country in 1991, and prior to him the then-First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexy I, visited the UK in 1946. During his trip, the patriarch is scheduled to meet the local Orthodox congregations and representatives of the Orthodox Church, as well as Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

As a former member of the Diocese of Sourozh between 1986 and 2006, I must point out that the Cathedral in Ennismore Gardens was properly consecrated for Orthodox worship in December 1956. So Kirill’s attempt to reconsecrate was both unnecessary and offensive – as well as uncanonical, as no church can ever be consecrated twice. Of course Kirill may have consecrated it to some religion other than Orthodox Christianity, which given the recent history of the Moscow Patriarchate and its glorification of Russian State power, over and above the Gospel, seems entirely plausible.

Or, as is the Orthodox tradition, the cathedral was reconsecrated after major renovations. You know, you could always ask the clergy there why it was done, rather than assume the Patriarch of Moscow is working for the evil one. If you did, you’ll see it was a normal thing, made exceptional only in that it was done by the Patriarch.
