Lil Wayne (born September 27th, 1982) has become an international superstar, earning his place as one of the biggest rap artists on the 21st century through his prolific output and unique flow.

Born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., Lil Wayne grew up in New Orleans, US, quickly finding a love for music and hip hop. At 11 years old, Wayne had already gained a job at the Cash Money label, soon recording an album with fellow teenager B.G. As the duo, the B.G.'Z's, they released an album in 1995, titled "True Story," which found many fans of the youngsters. Lil Wayne then became involved with another group, the Hot Boys, which included B.G. alongside Juvenile and Young Turk. The teen hardcore rap outfit released their debut, "Get It How U Live!" in 1997, catching the attention of Universal Records who went on to distribute their second release, "Guerrilla Warfare," which went to the top of Billboard's R&B/Hip-hop charts.

Lil Wayne continued to appear on various Cash Money releases, collaborating with various members of the Hot Boys. In 2003, Wayne's first mixtape, "Da Drought," was released, drawing significant attention from the press, helping to build anticipation for his next full-length. "The Carter" arrived in 2004, breaking Wayne to a mainstream audience, bolstered by the number five single, "Go DJ." Further hit singles followed, becoming one of Cash Money's best-selling releases. "The Carter II" followed n 2005, bringing Wayne further success, selling Platinum.

Wayne continued to release endless mixtapes and appeared in collaborations for various artists, most notably Birdman on the album, "Like Father, Like Son.' After rave reviews of his "Dedication 2" mixtape, Wayne then featured on Chris Bown's

"Gimme That" and Fat Joe's "Make It Rain," keeping Wayne busy till his next album release. It was not until 2008 that a new album arrived, "The Carter III," which was marred by unauthorized album leaks. Despite these setbacks, the album became a huge hit, selling a million copies within its first week. By the end of the year, the album had earned Wayne four Grammy Awards, including 'Best Rap Album,' cementing Wayne's place in the mainstream.

Wayne then turned his hands to rock, appearing alongside Kid Rock at a live performance. His first rock album, "Rebirth," arrived in 2010, unfortunately coinciding with his arrest for possession of a weapon. Despite his arrest, Wayne was still able to release a ten-song EP, "I Am Not a Human Being" in September that year. Upon leaving prison, Wayne started work on a new record, 2011's "The Carter IV," which shot to the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Next, Wayne released the second volume of "I Am Not a Human Being," which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 in March 2013.

Live reviews

In a black hoodie, red cap and sunglasses, Lil Wayne started at the top — croaking lyrics at the crowd from the elevated stage like some sort of gangsta Muppet. It didn’t take long to establish himself as a master of the game with “Blunt Blowin”, “John” and “Steady Mobbin”. Then he politely thanked the audience (as he did after every set) and left the stage. Drake immediately came out as the antithesis to his opponent. Dressed all in white with a simple gold chain, looking like a college kid, Drake started at the bottom (stage) with “Draft Day”, “We Made It” and “The Language”. He didn’t leave with a simple thank you though, he needed to establish the tone first. Admitting Lil Wayne was his boss and mentor, he assured us he was going to “roast that muthafucka alive”. Wayne addressed any concerns when he came back out to give everyone a history lesson. “I heard this kid saying he was going to roast me alive. I’ve been doing this shit since he was in a wheelchair.” The Degrassi jokes continued through the set, as Wayne kept referring to Drake as Jimmy. There was also a lot of banter about hits vs. classics, as Wayne admitted Drake has more ‘hits’, but that he was lacking in the ‘classics’ department. The boxing format went on for 4 rounds. Each artist upping their game in each round. The jokes were there, but as the night went on, the jokes were interlaced with more and more respect for each other. Everything about the Battle Round was in good fun. Verse after hook after verse — they took jabs, but never came to blows. In one breath they would credit their success to one another, and in the next breath, they would call each other’s songs “cute”. It was part hip hop show, part comedy, part roast, but it was all together one of the most entertaining things I have witnessed two rappers do…ever. After a short DJ break, they both came out for the finale. “6 Foot 7 Foot”, “All Me”, “Started From The Bottom” and “The Motto” were highlights, but “Believe Me” (a collab from Wayne’s upcoming album) and the final final “HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right)” were among the best performances of the night. At the end of it all, they called it a draw. Supposedly Drake was 1 point ahead on the tour, so he left Red Rock with his 1 point lead. And although I went in as a diehard Wayne supporter, I believe the draw was fair. Who knows if the app really determined the winner. I’m guessing it might all be fixed and they’ll come out in a tie at the end of the tour. That would make sense. But as for their performances on Wednesday night, I think they proved that they both have their strengths and weaknesses, but they are better together. Drake’s smooth, sometime monotonous flow and crooning voice are the perfect remedy to Wayne’s quirks, alien persona and unintelligible lyrics…and vice versa. So the format of this show was perfect. It allowed the strengths to hide the flaws in each artist. It went on for 2 1/2 hours and there wasn’t a single lull in the set. People paid good money to see Drake and Lil Wayne battle it out. They got their money’s worth. At the end of the day, I believe that there were multiple winners. Drake and Lil Wayne were both honestly appreciative to have played the stage at Red Rocks. And they both got paid. The promoters and companies behind the tour will also profit from ticket and merch sales. We won as well. Those of us who were big enough fans of either Drake or Lil Wayne to have spent the money for the show were rewarded with one the best and most unique hip hop events I have ever attended.

The wayne vs drake concert was amazing! They performed almost every hit they ever made and they really brought all their energy on stage and they interacted with the crowd. Each artist performed his best and left everything on that stage. The atmosphere was so much fun and i cant wait to go to another one of their concerts! Drake on the stripper pole was pretty amazing too! It was just the most fun concert ive ever been too

Lil Wayne is a rockstar. He has so much energy and really gets the crowd going. He is a team player and was a joy to see on stage with 2 chainz. The staples center was a great venue for this show. My high expectations were met during the BET experience. I want a surprised by how many beginning acts were also there. Well done weezy!!!

IT....was incredible! He was lively, on point and it will go down as the best concert I've ever seen and I've seen A LOT! The two opening acts were fun also. He did all old school because he's jammed up with label but we did not mind at all!

Waited over 3 hours never saw Wayne so we finally just left. Very disappointed. Concert held in a very shady area. Seating was very uncomfortable. This experience most definitely has made my mind up about concerts. This will be the last one.

It was an awesome ass concert. Lil wayne was amazing! I would definitely go again to see him perform. The opening act was really really good and I stayed for parts of blink 182 but lil wayne definitely killed it last night

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is preparing to tour the country for the first time in years. On Tuesday, January 31, Weezy F. Baby took to social media to announce the plans for his upcoming string of shows. Presented by Young Money and Rolling Loud, Wayne's 'Welcome to Tha Carter' tour will begin in Minneapolis on April 4 and will hit up other major cities in the U.S and Canada before it wraps up in Los Angeles towards the end of May. Tickets for the tour are expected to go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. on his official website .

We've seen Lil Wayne touch numerous stages last year from Dreamville Fest to his own Lil Weezyana Fest in his hometown in Lousiana. However, it's been some time since the seasoned MC has traveled across the country to perform. The last time he was involved with a tour was back in 2019 when he joined Blink-182's Enema of the State 2oth anniversary tour as a co-headliner. Their tour lasted from May to September, but Wayne didn't attend every date on the schedule. Wayne's tour announcement comes a few months after he confirmed Tha Carter VI is in the works. He revealed the exciting news after he performed at Drake's Young Money reunion show in Toronto last year. "What up y'all? Tunechi here," Wayne said into the camera. "Thank you, I ain't s**t without you. I'm not sure if you heard but, Tha Carter VI is on the way." In addition to Tha Carter VI , there's also speculation that Wayne will also serve up ColleGrove 2 with 2 Chainz . The duo recently performed together at LIV Nightclub in Miami Beach alongside Drake , who made a surprise appearance.

So far, it has not been revealed who Weezy F. Baby will have joining him, but one can only expect that the rap living legend will have an insane lineup of guests. As we anxiously await more details, Wayne has other big events in the near future. This Sunday (Feb. 5), the “Mrs. Officer” hitmaker will be a Global Impact Award recipient for the 2023 Grammys. The ceremony will honor his “personal and professional achievements in the music industry.” Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre will also be recognized for their many contributions. The original Hot Boy will also hit the stage as a special guest for Rolling Loud in Inglewood, California in March. Other performers include Playboi Carti, Tyga, Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Future, Lil Uzi Vert and more.

Wayne’s “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour” will also see stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Houston. On Aug. 6, 2022, the New Orleans native delivered the show of a lifetime when he joined Drake and Nicki Minaj in Toronto for the iconic Young Money Reunion. Together, “The K-I-N-G, the G.O.A.T. [and] the Queen” performed their chart-topping collaborations such as “HYFR,” “Moment 4 Life” and “The Motto.” While on stage, Wayne said he was “working on Tha Carter VI , coming soon.”

Drake Adds Final Big As the What? Shows With Co-Headliner Lil Wayne

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Drake has enlisted Lil Wayne to help him close out the Big As the What? Tour in the coming weeks, including two newly added shows in Newark, New Jersey.

While the trek was billed as a Drake/J. Cole co-headlining run, it appears J. Cole will not be able to make some of the final concerts on the itinerary. So, Lil Wayne will take the stage instead for a run of gigs starting March 23 and 24 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Wayne will also perform with Drake at the UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York on March 28 and 29; and the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania on March 31. The tour will close out with two newly-announced shows, April 4 and 5, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. (Lil Durk, who’s been providing support for most of the tour, will perform at all the aforementioned stops, except the two shows at UBS Arena.)

After a delay late last year , Drake and J. Cole kicked off the the Big As the What? tour in February. While J. Cole hasn’t dropped an album since 2021’s The Off Season , Drake was touring in support of his most recent effort, For All the Dogs , which arrived last October.

In the midst of the tour, however, Drake has garnered some arguably dubious attention as he’s stood by Tory Lanez in his attempt to appeal his sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. Drake recently shared a photo of Lanez with the caption “3 you,” which is slang for “free you” (the number “3” symbolizes open handcuffs). Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison last August after being found guilty of shooting Meg during a 2020 altercation.

Lil Wayne performs at 2024 Roots Picnic at Fairmount Park on June 1, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Earlier this year, while on YG ‘s 4HUNNID podcast, Lil Wayne expressed interest in wanting to headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show in his hometown.

“I will not lie to you, I have not got a call,” Wayne said around the 23-minute mark during the February interview. “But we all praying, we keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer, so I’m going make it very hard for them to…I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy.”

Kendrick Lamar performs in the Pepsi Halftime Show during the NFL Super Bowl LVI football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on February 13, 2022 in Inglewood, California.

As we now know, Wayne was passed up in favor of Kendrick Lamar for the upcoming 2025 Super Bowl halftime show, which has many fans and artists upset. Weezy has yet to respond, but Nicki Minaj and Birdman have all made their feelings be known, as well as Wayne’s longtime engineer .

“These n—az Pussi @NICKIMINAJ @Drake @LilTunechi YMCMB,” Birdman tweeted earlier Monday. “I’m make these n—az respek us on Gladys.”

Nicki seemed to take aim at Jay-Z and his partnership with the NFL, tweeting, “One n—a took a knee. The other n—a took the bag,” while Weezy’s engineer Fabian Marasciullo expressed disappointment. “Confused. Disappointed. Angry. But most of all, inspired,” he wrote on his Instagram Story over the weekend. “Will never again be in a position or have the [GOAT] in a position where we are at the mercy of someone else’s decision. We will make the decisions.”

New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl a record-tying 11 times (Miami is the other city), with 2013 being the last time the “Big Game” was played there. Beyoncé headlined the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.

Lil Wayne Snubbed for 2025 Hometown Super Bowl, Manager Speaks Out

Lauren Boisvert

Updated:

Kendrick Lamar was recently chosen to perform at the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime show in New Orleans, making this his second time headlining the show since his last appearance there in 2022. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne’s manager was rallying for him to headline the show in his hometown. However, the choice caused Lil Wayne to be snubbed, and his manager recently spoke out.

Videos by American Songwriter

“Confused. Disappointed. Angry. But most of all. Inspired,” Lil Wayne’s manager, Fabian Marasciullo, wrote in an Instagram story. “Will never again be in a position or have the [GOAT] in a position where we are at the mercy of someone else’s decision. We will make the decisions.”

Many fans agreed with Marasciullo, sharing their thoughts on social media as well. “Ngl picking a Rapper to headline the biggest game in Wayne’s backyard is disrespectful…no matter who the rapper is,” one fan wrote. Another commented , “Wayne has been robbed.”

Still, some fans noted that the Halftime show performer isn’t chosen based on their hometown. “Wayne shouldn’t be doing the Super Bowl just because it’s in New Orleans. That’s not how it works,” one person wrote. They continued, “Wayne as a special guest would be nice but he should not headline the Halftime show just because it’s his hometown.”

Fans Split About Lil Wayne New Orleans Super Bowl Snub

Other fans shared their thoughts about the Halftime show choice. “This has nothing to do with location. It’s about timing. We wanna see Kendrick at the Super Bowl whether it’s NY, Texas, Miami, don’t matter. Wayne deserves this spot as well but it’s timing. This time is meant for Kendrick, Wayne knows this,” one fan wrote .

Many expressed a similar sentiment, as this has been one of the biggest years for Kendrick Lamar since his album DAMN. won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018. His feud with Drake was widely reported, and produced the diss track “Not Like Us,” which skyrocketed on the charts. The overall sentiment from fans is that this is Lamar’s year.

Roc Nation, Apple Music, and the NFL announced the Halftime show performer on Sunday, September 8. In a statement from Roc Nation, founder Jay-Z said that Kendrick Lamar is “truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”

As Big As The Super Bowl? Lil Wayne's Snub Was Expected

Lil Wayne Super Bowl

"Is there a more important city traditionally in American culinary history, a more vibrant, diverse, and influential? Probably not,” the late Anthony Bourdain once described the city of New Orleans, home of the Saints, jazz music, and the birthplace of Dwayne Michael Carter II, the rapper we’ve grown to love as Lil Wayne. For about three decades, Weezy F. Baby has been an anchor in hip-hop’s 51-year history, an artist with deep roots in his city’s contributions to music as a whole. There isn’t another artist alive who could replicate his creativity, quirkiness, thought, or flow patterns, but many have tried. Even those who attempted to keep up found themselves getting outrapped on their own song or outperformed on their own beat. As he said in a Super Bowl interview in 2002: “I been went platinum, just not off records.” For an artist to be as revered lyrically as he is commercially ( Tha Carter III is among a handful of hip-hop albums to ever move one million units in the first week ), and with the longevity he has, Wayne’s impact across the world can be felt, even when it’s not always acknowledged.

Hence why Kendrick Lamar’s announcement as the Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner in New Orleans is less shocking than it is disappointing. Wayne has expressed a desire to perform at the Super Bowl throughout the past year, and it only made sense considering how Jay-Z and Roc Nation have not only uplifted hip-hop but emphasized the importance of regional culture, as we’ve seen with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre . Wayne is NOLA’s flagship artist, one of the most celebrated musical talents of all time whose reflected his hometown through the damage of Katrina and uplifted its talents through his Lil Weezyana Festival. His absence from the Super Bowl stage is a missed opportunity, but, frankly, it should’ve been expected since Usher took the stage.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kendrick Lamar (@kendricklamar)

For anyone who has expressed their grievances over the situation, we must ask a critical question: what has Lil Wayne done in the past year to warrant a Super Bowl Halftime Show? If we take a glance at each artist who performed during the Halftime Show under Jay-Z’s tutelage, there was a build-up of momentum to that performance. Usher became the star of Las Vegas, thanks to his world-class residency; The Weeknd emerged triumphant post-pandemic. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre brought hometown pride to Los Angeles in the same year that they celebrated the 30th anniversary of The Chronic while curating an intergenerational performance that included Eminem, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige , and Kendrick Lamar.

All of that to say: Lil Wayne simply hasn’t done enough in the past year. According to Brian Zisook , the co-founder of Audiomack, it’s the Super Bowl, Apple Music, and its sponsors who look at eight categories when selecting the Halftime Show performer: availability, superstar status, popularity, global impact, reach, live performance, a catalog of hits to fill 12-15 minutes, and new music on the horizon.

It’s been over two years since Lil Wayne launched a countdown for Tha Carter VI and, as of now, we haven’t received a promising single that indicates that it’s officially on the way. Not to mention, Lil Wayne hasn’t really toured any major stadiums or arenas as of late with the exception of his brief stint with Drake earlier this year. In 2023, he embarked on the Welcome To The Carter Tour , where he played in smaller, more intimate venues. And if we look at sales, the last three projects he was involved in, Trust Fund Babies with Rich The Kid, Tha Fix Before Tha VI , and Welcome 2 Collegrove with 2 Chainz all failed to move more than 34,000 in their first week. Let me be clear: first week sales do not mean anything but Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III remains one of five albums to have ever moved one million units in the first week. Wayne’s best work recently has been the features run he’s been on. Simply based on statistics, which presumably is the only aspect that the NFL’s corporate office is interested in, Wayne’s pull in 2024 isn’t as strong as it once was before his issues with Birdman put his career on ice for a few years.

Lil Wayne encompasses most of the qualities that Zisook laid out, just not all of them. His superstar status is undeniable, but is the global appreciation for him on par with his legacy in America? His performances are often subpar. Let’s not forget that this is the same guy who needs a teleprompter while on stage because he’s recorded more music than he’s capable of remembering. And perhaps, there also needs to be some sort of reckoning of who Lil Wayne is and his appeal. The controversies that have riddled the recent years of his career, from his stance on BLM to endorsing Donald Trump in 2020, could have opened a can of worms that would overshadow the prestige of the Halftime show right before one of the most important presidential elections in history that could very well result in the first Woman of Color being elected into the Oval Office. Part of Roc Nation's partnership with the NFL is to "amplify the league's social justice efforts." Plus, do we really think that Wayne will be able to get through a 12-15 minute setlist of his greatest hits without mentioning cunnilingus... on the biggest stage in America? None of this is to downplay why Lil Wayne deserved the spot as a legend and an ambassador of New Orleans but rather, food for thought as to the possible reasons he may have been overlooked in the eyes of the NFL. Wayne’s lack of filter and awareness of his surroundings has been a gift and a curse to his public persona.

On the surface, the optics of Kendrick Lamar headlining the Super Bowl in New Orleans seem just plain petty. However, it makes sense within the criteria of what the NFL expects. Kendrick Lamar made the most out of a few months. “ Not Like Us ” remains in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and basically held down the third spot on the chart for the majority of the summer. Then, there’s the Pop Out , which, in retrospect, feels like the predecessor to his Super Bowl announcement. Tickets sold out almost immediately; Dot brought out the entirety of Los Angeles and has the most minutes watched of any Amazon Music production on Twitch and Prime platforms. On the heels of a historic beef, Kendrick Lamar emerged triumphant in numbers and content, and this Super Bowl performance is the paper bag of dog sh*t burning on Drake’s porch. There’s no way Drake could stomp it out without stepping in sh*t himself.

“Not Like Us” is ultimately rooted in Patriotism, and there’s nothing more American than football. While it served as a nail-in-the-coffin offering during a heated week-long battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar that turned into a U.S. vs. Canada debate, it clearly forced everyone within hip-hop (and outside of it) to pick a side. At this point, the internet has run with the theory that Jay-Z’s alleged issues with Drake, Lil Wayne, Birdman, and Nicki Minaj helped Kendrick Lamar make history as the first rapper to headline the Super Bow, but we can’t really be certain if that’s the case. We could unpack the web of connections between these artists for days and likely wouldn’t land on a concrete theory as to why Weezy was snubbed this year. However, the situation, as a whole, could be a predicament for Lil Wayne, whose loyalty to Drake has been in question recently after Wayne wore an XO chain in the music video for Jon Baptiste's "Uneasy." Considering that Kendrick Lamar will probably bring out a guest on stage, would he extend an invite to the GOAT? And if so, would Lil Wayne sacrifice his allegiance to Drake for hometown pride?  Regardless of the outcome, the Super Bowl already kicked off the type of discourse they would’ve wanted in the first place.

Why Picking Kendrick Lamar to Perform at 2025 Super Bowl Makes Sense

It's official.  Kendrick Lamar  will headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans. However, the announcement has ruffled the feathers of some fans and rappers who believe the rightful choice should have been  Lil Wayne  considering he's from the Big Easy. Despite the opposition, it's clear the correct choice was made.

Why Kendrick Lamar Is the Right Choice for Super Bowl LIX

Kendrick Lamar, like Lil Wayne, has had a legendary rap career. Despite not dropping an album this year, Dot's 2024 run will go down in history. His rap battle with Drake  was the biggest moment of the year in hip-hop and resulted in two No. 1 songs for the Compton, Calif. rapper; "Like That" with Future and Metro Boomin, and the Drake diss "Not Like Us. " K-Dot's  The Pop Out concert in June was another epic moment for rap. Basically, all eyes have been on Kendrick for the better part of the year. And they will continue to be with rumors floating around that he is prepping a new album.

On the other hand, despite dropping a couple of well-received features, Lil Wayne has mostly been stagnant in 2024, rap-wise. Besides recently revealing that Tha Carter VI is complete ,  there has been little buzz on the music front.

Also, Kendrick Lamar is universally a safer choice. As evidenced most recently in his massive record-breaking The Big Steppers Tour in 2023, Kendrick excels in the live performance space. And his catalog has more universal appeal to a Super Bowl-watching audience.

Lil Wayne has a prolific catalog. However, he doesn't have the most stellar track record when it comes to live performances. He has a history of his concerts going left  as well as behind-the-scenes horror stories.

Art director Shaun Harrison  recently spoke up about his bad experience working with Wayne on a Grammy performance and said putting Wayne as the headliner for the Super Bowl would be the "biggest mistake ever."

Others have cited Lil Wayne's lyrics, which include more lines about drug use and hardcore content, being a reason to choose Kendrick over Tunechi. Then, there's the fact that Lil Wayne himself has admitted on multiple occasions that he can't remember the lyrics to his songs .

Could Wayne pull it all together for a live set on the world's biggest stage? Sure. But is Kendrick a safer bet? Absolutely. This is the Super Bowl. Billions of dollars are involved. And companies tend to like to go with the sure thing.

Location doesn't matter.

It seems like most of the heartache over Wayne not headlining the Big Game is because it is taking place in the N.O. However, the notion that Lil Wayne should automatically get the nod because he is a New Orleans native would be more precedent-setting than something that has actually happened in the past. Other than  Dr. Dre's Super Bowl performance in Los Angeles in 2022, no previous performers have hailed from the city where the big game is being held.

There's no doubt, the sentimental choice would be Lil Wayne, but the right choice for the 2025 Super Bowl is K-Dot.
