Legends Tour: Peter Baker seals senior order of merit title in Mauritius

  • Published 10 December 2023

Peter Baker at Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius

Peter Baker's win at Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius was his fourth on the Legends Tour this season

Former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker clinched the Legends Tour order of merit by winning a thrilling MCB Tour Championship at Belle Mare Plage.

Baker, 56, led Adilson da Silva by 264 points going into the finale but the Brazilian pushed the Englishman until the last hole of the season before he secured the MCB Race to Mauritius.

Baker made four birdies in his last six holes to card a third 67 of the week.

It sealed a one-stroke win in the event over Peter Fowler and Patrik Sjoland.

Baker, who won three points in the 1993 Ryder Cup, paid tribute to his long-time friend Ian Woosnam "for giving me a kick when it was needed" after he held his nerve to win the tournament and senior order of merit in Mauritius.

The South Staffordshire player and Da Silva were never more than a stroke apart on an enthralling final day that ended with the pair hitting their final drives of the season to within eight feet of each other.

Baker was a stroke in front and therefore held the advantage because his South Africa-based rival had to win the tournament and hope his rival did not finish second in order to claim the order of merit.

But the Englishman knew a wayward approach into the water that lines the right side and the back of the par-five 18th green on the Legends course would open the door for Da Silva if he could find an eagle.

However Baker nailed a five-wood to within six feet and he punched the air in a mixture of delight and relief as it cleared the water and settled on the green.

Da Silva smiled in wry fashion, knowing his chance had realistically gone - but still drilled his own approach to 20ft.

The 51-year-old raced his eagle putt past the hole and missed the one coming back, so signed for a 69 and a share of fourth place with Jean-Francois Remesy.

Baker trundled his short eagle putt up to the hole to make sure of the birdie finish that sealed the tournament success after a captivating final day in the Indian Ocean.

His dropped shots at the 5th and 8th were remarkably his only bogeys of the week at Belle Mare Plage despite being under extreme pressure.

Australian Fowler birdied the 6th on an otherwise quiet front nine, but then gained shots at the 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th as he closed with a 68.

Swede Sjoland ended his first season on the Legends Tour in style to pip Scotland's Greig Hutcheon to the Barry Lane Rookie of the Year title.

Preview of the Legends Tour’s season-ending MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius

legends golf tour mauritius

  • March 29, 2022

Nearly two and a half years after the last edition of the Legends Tour’s popular end-of-season MCB Tour Championship the circuit finally returns to Mauritius.

Europe’s senior circuit was badly hit by Covid in 2020 and even 2021 was a struggle. This week’s tournament should have taken place in December but has been delayed and, as such, is highly anticipated by the field.

The Legends Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage provides a good test, with wide fairways (lots of trouble if they are missed however), small greens and a stunning backdrop of green Indian Ocean vegetation and bright blue water hazards on most of the holes.

legends golf tour mauritius

Jarmo Sandelin defends his title, but a host of exciting debutants will be seeking to make the most of their first visit including Thomas Bjorn and Jeev Milkha Singh.

The Great Dane, winner of 15 DP World Tour titles and captain of Europe’s victorious 2018 Ryder Cup team, said: “It doesn’t get any better than ending your season in a place like Mauritius and I am so excited to get out to the Indian Ocean in December.

“I’ve really enjoyed the events I’ve played on the Legends Tour this year. It’s given me the chance to compete for silverware as well as being able to catch up with old friends who I haven’t seen much in recent years.

“I know there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make the tenth anniversary of this event extra special and I’m ready to get my first taste of a tournament which is held in such high regard.”

Singh is excited to renew his own competitive instincts as he heads towards the 10th anniversary of his fourth and final win on the main circuit.

“I am so looking forward to playing against guys my own age,” he said.

“The last few years have been tumultuous for me and my family. Ever since I won the Scottish Open in 2012, I have struggled with a series of injuries. And the past couple of years, as a nation we have faced a lot of hardship because of the pandemic. I personally lost both my mum and dad within a space of five days last year, which was very tough to handle.

“However, I am sure my parents would want me to continue with my life. Golf is the only thing I have known for nearly 35 years, and I think nothing will give them greater pleasure than me doing well on the golf course once again.”

The action begins on Friday, April 1st.

legends golf tour mauritius

South Africa’s David Frost wasted no time falling in love with the course. He was fifth on debut in 2009 and, six visits later, that first effort remained his “worst” finish. He was victorious in 2010 and 2012, and finished top three on another four occasions.

It needed something special to stop Frost from winning early in that stretch. Indeed, it took nothing less than the 1996 Open champion and former World No. 1 Tom Lehman to force him into second in 2011.

If Frost’s dominance was expected – he has been a formidable presence on the PGA Tour through the 1980s and 90s – the back-to-back wins of Paul Wesselingh in 2013 and 2014 were slightly less predictable.

True, he had hit the senior circuit running, but he had never established himself on the European Tour. No matter, that first win saw him go head-to-head with Colin Montgomerie in the final round and emerge triumphant in style.

Two years later Monty returned to the island and had his revenge, overhauling Frost’s early lead to win by three and he was succeeded by his European Ryder Cup team-mate Barry Lane, who had twice finished second before tasting success.

In the last three renewals going low in the final round has been essential. Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant carded a Sunday 62 for an eight shot win in 2017, American Clark Dennis matched that winning margin with a final lap 64, and Jarmo Sandelin turned a four shot deficit into a three shot win with a final round 65 in 2019.

legends golf tour mauritius

It’s no surprise that the field enjoys this final stop of the season, however delayed.

Constance Belle Mare Plage sits on the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean and it’s not unknown for the players to spend a morning snorkelling ahead of their tee time or to take a dip straight after signing their card.

The Legends Course is a mere stroll across the road, a layout that twists between lush vegetation, always dodging the larger outcrops of volcanic rock. Big scores and low scores are typical because hitting fairways and greens will result in birdie opportunities – but stray shots can easily find unplayable spots.

The main contenders

The top four in the Order of Merit will be eyeing double success. However, rankings leader Dodd and third placed Markus Brier have poor course records. Thomas Levet is a course debutant, but James Kingston was second in 2019 after sharing the pre-final round lead.

Former champions Paul Wesselingh, Barry Lane, Clark Dennis and Jarmo Sandelin return. Dennis has played the best this season, yet none are in the form they were when winning here.

An outsider with big claims might be England’s John Bickerton who always enjoyed playing on tight tests during his European Tour career – and if they were on resort islands all the better.

Legends Tour returns to Mauritius

The Legend course

After a two-year hiatus, the Legends Tour (formally the Staysure Tour) has made a welcome return to the shores of Mauritius.

Constance Belle Mare Plage on the east coast of Mauritius will host the 10th edition of the MCB Tour Championship.

“Out of the 600 destinations I have been to in my career Mauritius is the favourite,” said defending champion Jarmo Sandelin, who turned pro in 1987.

“This week’s strategy is to leave the driver in the bag and find the fairways as the course is not very long, but you need to keep the ball in play,” the big-hitting Swede confirmed.

Notable players in the field include 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell, Paul Lawrie who won the Open Championship in 1999, and two-time senior Major champion Roger Chapman.

The rest of the star-studded field includes Stephen Dodd, Frenchman Thomas Levet, Markus Brier and South Africa’s Chris Williams.

“It’s great to be back and see all the guys back on tour,” said Williams. “I have had a win, and second place, back in South Africa recently so I’m feeling good and hoping for the best.”

The tournament takes place on the Legend course, which is a par-72, 6,018-metre Hugh Baiocchi design with narrow fairways surrounded by unforgiving bush and numerous water hazards.

“Keeping the ball in play is premium on this course,” said South Africa’s James Kingston, who is playing in his fifth MCB Tour Championship. “The more aggressive you are off the tee naturally brings more birdie opportunities into play, but you need to know which holes to do it on and when to hold back.”

A collective sigh of relief is notable among all the players grateful to be back on tour and on the magical island of Mauritius.

With the Order of Merit closely contested as well as rookies like Jeev Milkha Sing making his first appearance on the Legends Tour, it promises to be a hotly contested affair.

The 2022 Legends Tour season, one which has witnessed drama, intensity and journeys back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, is now set for its traditional Indian Ocean finale, beginning with this week’s MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles at Constance Lemuria.

It will be the third edition of a tournament that was first played in 2018 when the Englishman Roger Chapman overhauled the pre-final round leader Miguel Angel Martin, of Spain, in a comprehensive fashion. Martin had been dominating the field and led by five shots with 18 holes to play but the three-time European Tour winner fumbled his challenge and had no answer for the charge of the eventual winner or Welshman Phillip Price who both were tied at the top of the leaderboard before Chapman prevailed in extra holes.

Twelve months later the South African James Kingston was on the brink of winning a first Legends Tour title, leading throughout much of the weekend, but he couldn’t match Australia’s Peter Fowler whose triumph was his seventh among the seniors. Kingston endured double agony in 2019 because just seven days after his near-miss in Seychelles he was runner-up again in the MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius .

legends golf tour mauritius

This year he returns to the Indian Ocean leading the Order of Merit thanks to a season of relentless consistency that has included 12 top 20 finishes.

He’s yet again been a two-time runner-up, but he has also landed victory in the Swiss Seniors Open and it will need a remarkable effort over the next fortnight from Phillip Price or Paul Lawrie, his nearest challengers in the rankings if he is to be denied the end-of-season prize of lifting the John Jacobs Trophy. The stage awaiting them remains one of the most spectacular on the entire schedule because Constance Lemuria is a wonderful course that tests all aspects of a golfer’s game. The front nine is largely flat and tree-lined, demanding straight drives and accurate approaches to green protected by water hazards and volcanic rock. From the 13th tee onwards the field is faced with a contrasting examination that takes in a climb to the top of a hill followed by a dramatic descent in the form of the par-3 15th. With the world famous Anse Georgette beach in the background, it is one of the most scenic spots in world golf.

legends golf tour mauritius

The 16th is a par-5 that cuts a narrow path through a jungle while the 18th is another par-5 and another elevated tee box with a wonderful vista. It is an exacting and sensational final stretch that demands bold golf and makes dramatic finales an exciting inevitability.

The third edition will also welcome the finest field yet featuring major champions Tom Lehman, Paul Lawrie and Michael Campbell, former tournament winners Chapman and Fowler, plus past Order of Merit winners Price, Clark Dennis and Stephen Dodd.

The first round starts on this Friday, December 2nd.

Not without a finale in the Indian Ocean

The Legends Tour season's finale returns this December 2022 to Seychelles and Mauritius for a fortnight of golfing paradise in the MCB Tour Championship.

SKYCADDIE SCORES MAGNIFICENT 7 TOUR WINS IN A ROW ON THE LEGENDS TOUR

August 28, 2024

RIDGELAND, MS, …  SkyGolf®, maker of SkyCaddie®, the most-trusted rangefinders in golf, announces SkyCaddie users have won the first seven consecutive eligible events on the Legends Tour, so far this season.

Seven wins, from seven different players. That’s a 100% win-percentage for SkyCaddie in eligible events – a stat which the brand has never before achieved at the halfway mark on the Legends Tour (formerly European Senior Tour).

As a player using a SkyCaddie has won every single event during which distance measurement devices (DMDs) were allowed to be used, it is no surprise that the Top 10 in the current Order of Merit, at the time of writing, are all SkyCaddie users.

England’s Peter Baker won the season-opening Barbados Legends event in May – continuing his dominance after winning the 2023 Race To Mauritius Order Of Merit.

Clark Dennis from the USA won the second event, the Costa Navarino Legends in June, followed by Argentinian golfer Angel Cabrera at the Paul Lawrie Matchplay, and Brazilian golfer Adilson da Silva at the Irish Legends in the same month.

Jarmo Sandelin from Sweden won the Swiss Seniors Open in mid-July, and England’s Robert Coles took home the prestigious Staysure PGA Seniors Championship trophy in August, at the Trump International Golf Links near Aberdeen.

Finally, South African Keith Horne won the Zambia Golf Legends tournament in mid-August – to become the season’s seventh different winner to use SkyCaddie GPS distances for accurate yardages during the tournament.

“If we were Red Bull and this was Formula One, people would be complaining about predictability!” said SkyCaddie’s James Holmes. “But this is tournament golf, which is much, much harder to predict – there are so many more variables.

“The one predictable factor so far in 2024 has been SkyCaddie GPS in the winner’s circle.”

Three of the ten Legends Tour events so far in 2024 have not been eligible for SkyCaddie use – namely the three co-sanctioned ‘Majors’ including the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open Presented By Rolex.

SkyCaddie is the official distance measurement device on the Legends Tour Presented By Staysure. Formerly known as the European Senior Tour, the Legends Tour is the most prestigious professional Tour in the world which allows the use of DMDs during tournament play.

Tour officials use SkyCaddie’s ground-mapped GPS yardages to create pin sheets when setting each day’s pins. Legends Tour competitors can download the day’s accurate hole positions onto their SkyCaddies and can also get a printed pin sheet for the day.

“SkyCaddie GPS gives you more chance of winning golf tournaments,” said James Holmes.

“The facts prove this beyond any doubt. Because we walk every golf course to produce comprehensive and accurate data for every hole, every avid golfer will get an advantage if they can access SkyCaddie GPS yardages when playing in a competition – just like the stars on the Legends Tour.

“A SkyCaddie also helps you to play faster – for example, course management tasks such as calculating layup shots or yardages to a safe landing spot beyond hazards become instantaneous. A SkyCaddie gives you more confidence in your yardage than using a book, and unlike a laser, which is restricted to line-of-sight only, you can use a SkyCaddie in many additional situations such as on hilly courses, from the tee across dog legs or when you are out of position without a clear sight of the green.”

Golfing legends set to compete in inaugural India Legends Championship

New Delhi [India], August 27 (ANI): Former US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand will lead a strong international challenge as the Greg Norman-designed Golf Course is all set to host India Legends Championship, India's first-ever golf tournament on the Legends Tour.

The seniors, who are all legends in their country and the field of golf, will clash over three days for a whopping half a million dollars (USD 500,000). The field of 64 golfers comprises golfers from 17 different countries. The field includes as many as 9 Indians, led by India's legendary duo, Jeev Milkha Singh, who is also the tournament host, and Jyoti Randhawa, who made the Tour by winning the Legends Tour's tough and challenging Qualifying School finals in Turkey, as per a release.

The winner of the HSBC India Legends Championship is set to take home USD 74,250, while the runner-up will receive USD 49,000 with the third-place finisher pocketing USD 32,700.

Commenting on the inaugural Legends Tour tournament in India, Sandeep Batra, head of Wealth and Personal Banking, at HSBC India, said, "We are thrilled to tee off our title sponsorship of the HSBC India Legends Championship, a key milestone in our endeavour to support the golf landscape in the country. Jeev, Jyoti among Indian stars to compete in country's inaugural Legends Tour event from August 30

New Delhi: Indian golfing greats Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa will be among 64 international players vying for top honours in the inaugural HSBC India Legends Championships to be played at Jaypee Greens course at Greater Noida from August 30 to September 1.

The first Legends Tour tournament in the country, which will have $0.5 million as prize purse, will also see 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand in action.

The winner of the HSBC India Legends Championship is set to take home $74,250, while the runner-up will receive $49,000. The third-place finisher will pocket $32,700.

The event will be played over 54 holes and it will be preceded by a star-studded Pro-Am event on August 28 and 29, which will see top golfers play alongside amateurs.

The Legends Tour is a professional golf tour for male golfers aged 50 and over, run by the PGA European Tour. It began as European Senior Tour in 1992 and was rechristened as Legends Tour in 2020.

Jeev is the host of the tournament, co-sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). The event will see a participation from 17 countries.

Randhawa qualified after winning the Legends Tour's tough and challenging Qualifying School finals in Turkey.

"Since I am the host, I will ensure that I don't win the tournament this weekend," the 52-year-old Jeev joked at the press conference to launch the tournament.

"It's great for the country's golfers and for world golf in general. Golfing career is over when you are 40 or 45. But with the Legends Tour, you can have a second innings after reaching 50 years.

"Now, you can play golf as a career till 60." Randhawa, also 52, said not only the money, a golfer can also maintain the competitive spirit by continuing to play in the Legends Tour.

"It's good for the budding Indian golfers and amateurs. They will now know that a golfer can play another 10 years after retirement," he said.

"By playing in the Legends Tour, you are keeping your golfing passion and competitive spirit intact as well as keeping yourself fit." Jeev (twice Asia No. 1 in 2006 and 2008) and Randhawa (once Asia No. 1 in 2002) are well-known names around the world with numerous appearances in Majors too.

Jeev has won four times each on the European and Japan Tours, one on the Korean Tour besides six times on the Asian Tour. Randhawa has won eight times on the Asian Tour and once in Japan.

Jeev, who has played all four Majors, was the first Indian to tee up at the Masters at the Augusta National in 2007. He was a former captain of Asia in EurAsia Cup (Europe vs Asia team event). He has five top 10 finishes on the Legends Tour since 2022.

Besides Jeev and Randhawa, there are other seven Indians in the fray. They are Mukesh Kumar, Digvijay Singh, Harmeet Kahlon, Vijay Kumar, all past winners on the Asian Tour, Amandeep Johl, Vishal Singh and Sanjay Kumar.

The 55-year-old Campbell, who has also won 15 other tournaments around the world, said, "I started playing golf when I was 10. My grandmother told me that time when I achieve success, I should remember I have two hands, one for receiving and another for giving back," he said.

"Legends Tour is great in that way. You keep playing after retirement and inspire youngsters to take up the game. We have to give back to the game." Other top international stars in the tournament include Adilson da Silva, a Brazilian who made South Africa his home, a six-time winner on Legends Tour with 19 professional wins overall.

South African James Kingston (21 wins including two on European Tour, three on Legends Tour and 10 on Sunshine Tour), Sweden's first-ever Ryder Cup player, Joakim Haeggman (10 wins including three on European Tour and one on Legends Tour) and another former Swedish Ryder Cup star, Jarmo Sandelin (11 wins including five on European Tour and two on Legends Tour) are the other big names.

The Legends Tour so has far travelled to 10 events, including three Majors. The HSBC India Legends is the 11th tournament of the season, which continues with seven more events and the Grand Finale at MCB Tour Championships in Mauritius.
