Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 201 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser that was first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to allow users to test features that are planned for future release versions of the Safari browser.

Safari Technology Preview Updated Feature 1

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Sonoma and the macOS Sequoia beta. Set to launch this fall, ‌macOS Sequoia‌ is the newest version of macOS that Apple is working on.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser from Apple's website. Complete release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while it is designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download and use.

Apple’s new Safari feature removes distracting items from websites

Safari’s newest feature, Distraction Control, can remove distracting elements from a website. The feature follows Arc Browser’s addition of Boosts last year, which similarly lets users remove features from a site and further customize its appearance.

Apple is rolling out the early version of the feature this week through new developer betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

Users can access the Distraction Control tool from the Page Menu in the Smart Search field. They then select the item on the website they want to remove. Safari will remember to remove the elements the next time they visit the site. The choice doesn’t currently sync across hardware, however, so users will have to hide the elements on each new device.

Users can click on the blue Hide icon in the search field and select “Show hidden items” to unhide any of the web page’s elements.

Apple said that the feature won’t remove ads or sections that have frequently changing content. It’s not clear if this tool will be able to remove, for example, a section like “Who to follow” or “Explore” on X, as these elements appear in the same place on the home page, but the content within those boxes is dynamic.

Arc Browser’s Boost tool was able to remove these sections during our testing last year .

With iOS 18, Apple also introduced a redesigned reader for better listening and font controls. It also launched Highlights, a feature that will surface important information from a page, including quick links for driving directions, call information and summaries of TV show reviews mentioned on a page.

Web Animations in Safari 13.1

With the release of iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, and Safari 13.1 in macOS Catalina 10.15.4, web developers have a new API at their disposal: Web Animations . We have been working on this feature for well over 2 years and it’s now available to all Safari users, providing a great programmatic API to create and control animations using JavaScript.

In this article we will discuss the benefits of this new API, how best to detect its availability, how it integrates with existing features such as CSS Animations and CSS Transitions, and the road ahead for animation technology in WebKit.

A Little History

The WebKit team came up with original proposals for CSS Animations and CSS Transitions back in 2007 and announced them on this blog. Over the years these specifications have matured and become W3C standards and an integral part of the web platform.

With these technologies, integrating animations in web content became simple, removing the requirement for developers to write JavaScript while providing better performance and power consumption by allowing browsers to use hardware acceleration when available and integrate animations in the layout and rendering pipeline.

As a web developer, I’ve enjoyed the simplicity and great performance of CSS Animations and CSS Transitions. I believe it is those virtues that have allowed animations to become a powerful tool for web developers. However, in my day-to-day work, I also found a few areas where these technologies were frustrating: dynamic creation, playback control, and monitoring an animation’s lifecycle.

The great news is that these issues are all taken care of by the new Web Animations API. Let’s see how to leverage this new API to improve everyday code in these areas.

Part I – Animation Creation

While CSS allows you to very easily animate a state change (the appearance of a button, for instance) it will be a lot trickier if the start and end values of a given animation are not known ahead of time. Typically, web developers would deal with those cases with CSS Transitions:

While this may look like a reasonable amount of code, there are additional factors to consider. Forcing a style invalidation will not let the browser perform that task at the time it will judge most appropriate. And this is just one single animation; what if another part of the page, possibly even a completely different JavaScript library, also needed to create an animation? This would multiply forced style invalidations and degrade performance.

And if you consider using CSS Animations instead, you would have to first generate a dedicated @keyframes rule and insert it inside a <style> element, failing to encapsulate what is really a targeted style change for a single element and causing a costly style invalidation.

The value of the Web Animations API lies in having a JavaScript API that preserves the ability to let the browser engine do the heavy lifting of running animations efficiently while enabling more advanced control of your animations. Using the Web Animations API, we can rewrite the code above with a single method call using Element.animate() :

While this example is very simple, the single Element.animate() method is a veritable Swiss Army knife and can express much more advanced features. The first argument specifies CSS values while the second argument specifies the animation’s timing . We won’t go into all possible timing properties, but all of the features of CSS Animations can be expressed using the Web Animations API. For instance:

Now we know how to create an animation using the Web Animations API, but how is it better than the code snippet using CSS Transitions? Well, that code tells the browser what to animate and how to animate it, but does not specify when . Now the browser will be able to process all new animations at the next most opportune moment with no need to force a style invalidation. This means that animations you author yourself as well as animations that may originate from a third-party JavaScript library – or even in a different document (for instance, via an <iframe> ) – will all be started and progress in sync.

Part II – Playback Control

Another shortcoming with existing technologies was the lack of playback control: the ability to pause, resume, and seek animations and control their speed. While the animation-play-state property allows control of whether a CSS Animation is paused or playing, there is no equivalent for CSS Transitions and it only controls one aspect of playback control. If you want to set the current time of an animation, you can only resort to roundabout techniques such as clever manipulations of negative animation-delay values, and if you want to change the speed at which an animation plays, the only option is to manipulate the timing values.

With the Web Animations API, all these concerns are handled by dedicated API. For instance, we can manipulate playback state using the play() and pause() methods, query and set time using the read-write currentTime property, and control speed using playbackRate without modifying duration:

This gives developers control over the behavior of animations after they have been created. It is now trivial to perform tasks which would have been previously daunting. To toggle the playback state of an animation at the press of a button:

Thanks to the Web Animations API making playback control a core concept for animations, these simple tasks are trivial and more complex control over an animation’s state can be achieved.

Part III – Animation Lifecycle

While the transition* and animation* family of DOM events provide information about when CSS-originated animations start and end, it is difficult to use them correctly. Consider fading out an element prior to removing it from the DOM. Typically, this would be written this way using CSS Animations:

Seems correct, but on further inspection there are problems. This code will remove the element as soon as an animationend event is dispatch on the element, but since animation events bubble, the event could come from an animation completing in a child element in the DOM hierarchy, and the animations could even be named the same way. There are measures you can take to make this kind of code safer, but using the Web Animations API, writing this kind of code is not just easier but safer because you have a direct reference to an Animation object rather than working through animation events scoped to an element’s hierarchy. And on top of this, the Web Animations API uses promises to monitor the ready and finished state of animations:

Consider how complex the same task would have been if you wanted to monitor the completion of a number of CSS Animations targeting several elements prior to removing a shared container. With the Web Animations API and its support for promises this is now expressed concisely:

Integration with CSS

Web Animations are not designed to replace existing technologies but rather to tightly integrate with them. You are free to use whichever technology you feel fits your use case and preferences best.

The Web Animations specification does not just define an API but also aims to provide a shared model for animations on the web; other specifications dealing with animations are defined with the same model and terminology. As such, it’s best to understand Web Animations as the foundation for animations on the web, and think of its API as well as CSS Transitions and CSS Animations as layers above that shared foundation.

What does this mean in practice?

To make a great implementation of the Web Animations API, we had to start off fresh with a brand new and shared animation engine for CSS Animations, CSS Transitions, and the new Web Animations API. Even if you don’t use the Web Animations API, the CSS Animations and CSS Transitions you’ve authored are now running in the new Web Animations engine. No matter which technology you choose, the animations will all run and update in sync, events dispatched by CSS-originated animation and the Web Animations API will be delivered together, etc.

But what may matter even more to authors is that the entire Web Animations API is available to query and control CSS-originated animations! You can specify animations in pure CSS but also control them with the Web Animations APIs using Document.getAnimations() and Element.getAnimations() . You can pause all animations running for a given document this way:

What about SVG? At this stage, SVG Animations remain distinct from the Web Animations model, and there is no integration between the Web Animations API and SVG. This remains an area of improvement for the Web platform.

Feature Detection

But before you start adopting this new technology in your projects, there are some further practical considerations that you need to be aware of.

Since this is new technology, it is important to use feature detection as users gradually update their browsers to newer versions with support for Web Animations. Detecting the availability of the various Web Animations API is simple. Here is one correct way to detect the availability of Element.animate() :

While Safari is shipping the entire Web Animations API as a whole, other browsers, such as Firefox and Chrome, have been shipping Element.animate() for a long time already, so it’s critical to test individual features separately. So, if you want to use Document.getAnimations() to query all running animations for a given document , make sure to feature detect that feature’s availability. As such the snippet further above would be better written this way:

There are parts of the API that aren’t yet implemented in Safari. Notably, effect composition is not supported yet. Before trying to set the composite property when defining the timing of your animation, you can check whether it is supported this way:

Animations in Web Inspector

Also new in the latest Safari release: CSS Animations and CSS Transitions can be seen in Web Inspector in the new Media & Animations timeline in the Timelines Tab, organized by animation-name or transition-property properties for each element target. When used alongside other timelines, it can be helpful to correlate how that particular CSS Animation or CSS Transition was created, such as by looking at script entries in the JavaScript & Events timeline.

Starting in Safari Technology Preview 100 , Web Inspector shows all animations, whether they are created by CSS or using the JavaScript API, in the Graphics Tab. It visualizes each individual animation object with lines for delays and curves for keyframes, and provides an in-depth view of exactly what the animation will do, as well as information about how it was created and some useful actions, such as logging the animation object in the Console. These are the first examples of what Web Animations allow to improve Web Inspector for working with animations, and we’re looking forward to improving our tools further.

The Road Ahead

Shipping support for Web Animations is an important milestone for animations in WebKit. Our new animation engine provides a more spec-compliant and forward-looking codebase to improve on. This is where developers like you come in: it’s important we hear about any compatibility woes you may run into with existing content using CSS Animations and CSS Transitions, but also when adopting the new Web Animations API in your content.

The transition to the new Web Animations engine allowed us to address known regressions and led to numerous progressions with Web Platform Tests, improving cross-browser compatibility. If you find your animations running differently in Safari, please file a bug report on bugs.webkit.org so that we can diagnose the issue and establish if it is an intentional change in behavior or a regression that we should address.

Festivities kick off at 11 a.m. at Ralph's Rock Diner, where participants can pick up a scorecard and then spend the afternoon hitting each restaurant and food stand on the list, scoring each hot dog according to five categories: dog, bun, toppings, presentation and value. Scorecards must be turned in at Ralph's by 5 p.m., and after tallying up the votes, the Hot Dog Safari will announce a winner. After that, having fueled up on hot dogs all afternoon, it's time to dance the night away on Ralph's patio. (MT)

The bad news is the Spencer Parks & Recreation Commission’s 2024 Summer Concert Series concludes on Aug. 18. The good news is the performers will be the popular vocal guitar duo Fender Road and special guest Kiwi country singer Kylie Harris.   Paul “Fender” Lirange and Gary Suter are Fender Road, playing a variety of pop, rock and country songs from the 1950s to today that will be instantly recognizable. Harris is a country artist originally from New Zealand who spent years performing and hosting her own television show in Nashville, Tennessee.  She was inducted into the Gold Guitar Hands of Fame in 2023 at a ceremony held at New Zealand's Capital of Country Music in Gore. (RD)

A celebratory synthesis of music, people and cultures from around the world, Kotoko Brass features musicians from Ghana, Antigua, Japan and the United States playing together in unity. Businesses of all sizes, universities, national laboratories, and other R&D organizations are eligible to submit ideas through a new Long Range Broad Agency Announcement.

WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) released a new Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (LRBAA) 24-01 , which is a standing, open invitation to the scientific and technical communities to propose research and development projects in support of our nation’s security. DHS encourages proposals for 23 research and development topics categorized by DHS mission areas. This program allows the Department to apply scientific and technical knowledge to its operational environments and advances innovation in industry, academia, and the public sector. “The LRBAA provides DHS the opportunity to explore unique ideas for potential innovative solutions from industry and academia to address some of the country’s most pressing security challenges,” said Dusty Lang, LRBAA program manager. “The process is designed to allow innovators to gauge DHS’ interest early on, reducing the effort and expense of creating a full proposal.”

The YWCA in York is preparing for its annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event to support victims of sexual violence.

The organization has participated in this national event for more than 10 years, hoping to get men's attention and raise awareness for sexualized violence towards women.

Organizers are encouraging men to wear heels during the walk in honor of victims and survivors to experience the weight they carry.

YWCA York CEO Kim Bracey said this event isn't just a moment to gather men in solidarity for women every year; it saves lives.

"For men to come together and help others to understand often the pain that women have gone through from being victimized, traumatized or situations they don't ask to be a part of. And help others come onboard as men to say, 'Enough is enough. Stop,'" she said.

All proceeds from the event on Sept. 6 will support the YWCA's victim services program.

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5040527   (released July 23, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. [BitLocker (known issue)] A BitLocker recovery screen shows when you start up your device. This occurs after you install the July 9, 2024, update. This issue is more likely to occur if device encryption is on. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Device encryption . To unlock your drive, Windows might ask you to enter the recovery key from your Microsoft account.

[Lock screen] This update addresses CVE-2024-38143. Because of this, the “Use my Windows user account” checkbox is not available on the lock screen to connect to Wi-Fi.

[NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse] This update removes this registry key. For more information refer to KB5020276—Netjoin: Domain join hardening changes .

[Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) and Linux Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)] This update applies SBAT to systems that run Windows. This stops vulnerable Linux EFI (Shim bootloaders) from running. This SBAT update will not apply to systems that dual-boot Windows and Linux. After the SBAT update is applied, older Linux ISO images might not boot. If this occurs, work with your Linux vendor to get an updated ISO image.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages .

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer ( wusa.exe ) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

♪ ♪ Brady Eidson: Hello. My name is Brady Eidson. I'm an engineer on the WebKit Architecture team. I am thrilled to introduce you to Web Push in Safari. Web Push lets you remotely send notifications to your web application's users. Here, a notification displays from webkit.org in the upper-right of the screen. Clicking the notification opens a WebKit blog post in a new window. Before I get into other details on how this works, I want to answer a few questions up front I know many of you will have.

Web Push is supported in Mac Safari beginning with macOS Ventura. And Web Push will be coming to iOS and iPadOS next year.

Apple's Safari Push Notifications have been an option for reaching Mac Safari users for quite a while. While it will continue to work, today I'm happy to announce that we have added support for Web Push, and this really is Web Push! The same combination of various web standards as implemented in other browsers. We'll go over those standards more later, but… the most important takeaway is that if you've coded your application to web standards, you won't need to make any changes for it to work in Safari. Of course, if you exclude Safari through browser detection, then you have some work ahead of you. Now would be a great time to switch from browser detection to feature detection, which has always been the best practice. We're using the same Apple Push Notification service that powers native push on all Macs and iOS devices, but no Apple Developer account is required to reach Safari users. We are using new end point URLs for Web Push, which brings up another thing you might be doing to unintentionally exclude Safari. If you tightly manage push end points on your server, make sure you allow URLs from any subdomain of push.apple.com. Moving beyond answers to those important questions, let's get into more detail. First, we'll look at the Web Push experience in Safari from a user's perspective. Then we'll cover the entire Web Push flow, from asking for permission to handling a click on an entry in Notification Center. Finally, we'll see what it takes to add Web Push to an existing web app. But first, the Mac Safari user experience. And I can think of no better way to cover that than with a demo. Here's Safari on macOS Ventura. I have webkit.org open in this browser tab. I need to keep up-to-date with the WebKit open source project, and Web Push is a great way to do that. webkit.org is not allowed to request permission to push without the user asking with a user gesture. So I'll click this bell-shaped button here to subscribe for notifications. What you see here is the system notifications prompt– the same one you'd see for any other application. In this case, it's on behalf of webkit.org. I will click "allow," and I'm all set. webkit.org is giving me the option to be notified about new blog posts as well as new commits to the source code repository. I know being notified for every commit will distract me from important work, but I absolutely want to be notified about new blog posts. So I'll check that box now. Coincidentally, somebody must've just published the WebKit blog post about Web Push. This notification looks just like any other and is attributed to webkit.org. I can click it to activate, and there is the blog post, open in Safari. Once a user has granted permissions to a website, they maintain control over that permission. As a macOS user, I'm used to managing Notification preferences inside System Settings, and that's where I can go to configure webkit.org's notifications. The same rich configuration as I'd find for any other app or service. As a Safari user, I'm used to managing website settings from inside Safari preferences. I can also go there to turn webkit.org's permissions on or off. And that's how Web Push works for users in Mac Safari. Before we move on, I want to reiterate a few things covered in that demo. First, we don't want users to be spammed by subscription requests they haven't asked for. So a website may only request a push subscription in response to a mouse click or a keystroke. Once a website has permission to show notifications to the user, the user controls that permission. They can choose to manage it in Safari's preferences or System Settings. And the setting will stay in sync if they happen to manage it in both. Finally, if you provide notifications for different types of events, it is a best practice to provide fine-grained controls for notification types within your web app, just like other apps do. Now that you've seen Web Push in action, let's dig in to what's happening at each step. Some of you are already intimately familiar with this. But for those of you new to Web Push, I'll go step by step, referring you to the relevant standards and documentation along the way. The first thing that happens is a user visits your website in a browser tab. Here's webkit.org open in Safari. Since it is open in a tab, it can install a Service Worker. A Service Worker is a unit of JavaScript that operates on behalf of an entire domain, separate from a currently open browser tab. Once the Service Worker script is installed, your web app is eligible to request a push subscription. As already mentioned, this request must be tied to a user gesture. webkit.org requests permission when clicking this bell-shaped button, which fulfills the user gesture requirement. When your site asks for a push subscription, the user sees this system prompt. Here is where they can make the final call on granting your website this powerful ability.

It is possible the user might deny the request. Your JavaScript should be prepared to handle that. But assuming the user grants permission, your JavaScript gets back a PushSubscription object. This includes everything your server needs to send a push message to this user in this browser. Information like the exact URL end point to use. You send this PushSubscription payload back to your server in whatever manner works best for your web app. Many popular server packages have Web Push support to manage subscriptions, or you can roll your own. The same pertains to how and when to actually send a push message to the URL end points your server knows about. I can't tell you when to do so. That's up to you and your website. But once you've decided to send that push message, I can help with what happens next. Remember how push requires an installed Service Worker? Once your server has sent a push message and Safari receives it, Safari wakes up your Service Worker and sends it a JavaScript push event. Showing a notification to the user in Notification Center is a requirement while handling the push event. Receiving the push event and displaying the notification happens if your website is currently open in a browser tab. It also happens if your website is not currently open in a browser tab. In the case of Safari on macOS Ventura, this happens even if Safari is not currently running. The final step: If your user clicks on that notification, a notificationclick event is sent to your Service Worker so it can respond appropriately. For example, by opening a new window to the URL associated with that notification. With that understanding of the Web Push flow under our belt, it's time to get into even more detail by actually adding Web Push support to an existing web app. Besides webkit.org, Browser Pets is the most mission critical internal tool for the Safari and WebKit teams. Keeping everyone in the department up-to-date on their favorite WebKittens and Pups on Safari has always been the mission statement of Browser Pets, and Web Push has made that easier than ever. Our internal BrowserPets domain already had a ServiceWorker script registered to speed up page loads and synchronize between multiple tabs. At a high level, a ServiceWorker script looks a lot like this. When an engineer visits the Browser Pets page in a tab, this JavaScript excerpt either determines if the Service Worker script has already been registered, or registers it if necessary. Notice we're practicing feature detection here, previously mentioned as a best practice. With the Service Worker prerequisite taken care of, we're ready to subscribe for push. Remember, you cannot request a push subscription without an explicit user gesture. Running this script in response to a button's onclick handler is one of many ways to satisfy that requirement. Once the user clicks that button, here's code to request a push subscription. I'll go into each of these points in more detail. First, we need to configure the request for a push subscription. An important bit for that is the public key our server uses to identify themselves to Apple's push servers. Here we use the standard technology called VAPID, the same as other browsers. I won't go over the sometimes complex details of VAPID here, but there are resources on the web to help you with the best solution for your server's setup. With the VAPID key set, we're ready to configure the subscription request. Notice we are explicitly stating that we promise to always make pushes user visible. While the standard for the JavaScript Push API optionally accommodates silent JavaScript runtime in response to a push, most browsers do not support that. Safari does not support that. And like most websites, Browser Pets does not need that. Then we request permission to push. This line of JavaScript results in the permission prompt for the user to either approve or reject. Assuming the user grants permission– which all Safari team members do for Browser Pets– this gives us a PushSubscription object with the details on how to reach this user in their browser. Things like the URL end point and the key used to encrypt the push message for transit. Finally, we need to send all of those details to our server. As mentioned before, the specifics of this will vary based on your exact application. Our BrowserPets server uses WordPress, which already has a few plugins to support standard Web Push. It's likely you'll find the same is true for your backend, and there are resources on the web to help find the right solution for just about any setup. Now we need to go back to our Service Worker JavaScript code. It will need to handle a few new events, starting with the push event. When a push message makes its way from the Browser Pets server to this browser, this Service Worker has a push event sent to it. That event contains a PushMessageData object which has multiple ways of accessing the data sent by your server. We use the JSON accessor here. Remember how when we subscribed for push, our JavaScript promised they would always be user visible? That means we must always show a platform native notification in response to each push. It is best to do this as early as possible in your push event handler. We're pulling everything we need out of that JSON blob to configure the notification, including setting up an action with a URL. That will come in handy in just a moment. After the notification is shown, we need to handle the user clicking on it. One more event for our Service Worker script to handle. In this notificationclick handler, BrowserPets will take the URL from the notification that was clicked to open a new window. Take note: This is a very common pattern. That's all the JavaScript we need to write to support Web Push. Of course, it's best to have some help while developing. As usual, that's where Web Inspector comes in. In addition to helping debug your website open in a browser tab, Web Inspector can also inspect Service Worker instances and set breakpoints on event handlers. All of this together will let you inspect and debug the JavaScript that subscribes for push as well as the service worker code that handles the push event and notification events. Additionally, the Apple Push Notification servers will give you human readable errors if something goes wrong when you attempt to publish a push message. Check out the links associated with this session for further documentation. I'd also like to get into more detail on a few points that came up while writing that code, with direct regards to user privacy and power usage. Importantly–and this is not the first time I've said this– subscribing for push requires a user gesture. As with other privileged features of the web platform, it's the right thing for user trust to require that the user actually asked to enable Web Push. As mentioned when I showed you the code on how to request a push subscription, you must promise that pushes will be user visible. Handling a push event is not an invitation for your JavaScript to get silent background runtime. Doing so would violate both a user's trust and a user's battery life. When handling a push event, you are in fact required to post a notification to Notification Center. Other browsers all have countermeasures against violating the promise to make pushes user visible, and so does Safari. In the beta build of macOS Ventura, after three push events where you fail to post a notification in a timely manner, your site's push subscription will be revoked. You will need to go through the permission workflow again. That's all. We're genuinely proud to support Web Push and excited that any site can use it, no Apple Developer account required. As long as you've coded to the standards and use feature detection, so you don't unwittingly exclude Safari, your users will already get the benefit of Web Push in Safari 16 on macOS Ventura. Dr. Lioba Moshi, Professor Emerita of Linguistics and Comparative Literature at the University of Georgia, has been a teacher, scholar, translator, and leader in various scholarly programs. She received her Ph.D. at UCLA, and taught at Stanford University before settling at the University of Georgia where she spent most of her teaching career in America. 

Dr. Moshi is a linguist and language pedagogist by training. She has written several books and articles on language pedagogy, linguistic analysis, politics, and has developed language materials that are used nationally and internationally. This is her first non-academic book, a detailed account of her life journey across three continents.
