Welcome to Crocodile Man Tours! We offer the best tour options for anyone looking for fun in sunny Costa Rica. Our mission is to lead the development of sustainable tourism in the town of Tárcoles, a rural town 20 minutes north of the popular tourist destination Jaco and 1 hour west of the country’s capital, San José.

We are pioneers in this adventure, we have more than 20 years of experience, we are made up of a team of Costa Ricans, natives of the place, who have dedicated decades ago to ecotourism in the region. The guides are some of the best in the area, we have managed to collaborate with companies such as: NATGEO and DISCOVERY CHANNEL when they come to COSTA RICA to film wildlife documentaries, we serve individuals, companies, national and international schools.

Our tour takes place in very comfortable and safe boats, down the Rio Grande de Tárcoles, in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, this is home to approximately 2,000 crocodiles, some of which grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Our guide will provide you with valuable information about the wildlife and environment around us. We will get very close so you can appreciate American crocodiles of all sizes, the river is a paradise for observing beautiful and exotic birds! Enjoy spectacular jungle landscapes and navigate the dense channels of the Guacalillo mangrove swamp. See wildlife in a comfortable and safe environment suitable for all members of the family!

Although we saw numerous signs warning us about the presence of crocodiles in Costa Rica , we had never had the opportunity to see these animals in the wild. That’s why, on the way to Manuel Antonio National Park , it seemed like a good idea to stop at the Crocodile Bridge over the Tárcoles River .

In case you didn’t know, you can observe one of the most fascinating species of animals in Costa Rica in the wild and… very close! The Tárcoles River has more crocs than Tortuguero and Carara, two other national parks in Costa Rica that are famous for their crocodiles.

At the Tarcoles Bridge in Costa Rica , you can see a dozen specimens of American crocodiles from above, either resting on the shore or popping their eyes above the water’s surface.

Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica

Tarcoles River & Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica

It seemed like one of the best things to do in Costa Rica , but it left us with mixed feelings. Seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica was spectacular, but one is left wondering if these animals stay there naturally, or if they receive food to be attracted, and thus also attract tourists. Nearby, you can see some craft stalls and local restaurants, and boat rides on the river are offered so you can see them up close (yes, even closer). We considered this boat tour , which starts from around the bridge and allows you to go into the jungle as you sail, but we decided against it and just observed them from the bridge.

We hear there are plans to build a visitor center and viewing platform, so we hope this will improve the situation for these crocodiles in Costa Rica . The truth is that the Tárcoles River Bridge has become super popular since it is free and safe. There is even a tour from San José that takes you here in case you decide not to rent a car in Costa Rica .

Below, you will find all the information you need to plan your visit to the Tarcoles River Bridge, such as its location, what to expect, and what to do in the surrounding area.

Where is the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica?

The Tárcoles River Bridge is located on National Highway 34 . This route connects San José , one of the most important cities in Costa Rica and the country’s capital, with the Pacific coast, where you will find some of the main tourist sites such as Quepos or Manuel Antonio .

To give you an idea, if you’re enjoying the waves on the beaches of Jacó , you can get here in just 30 minutes by car. On the other hand, if you’re staying in one of the hotels in San José , it will take you about an hour and a half.

How to find the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River, Costa Rica

Where is the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River, Costa Rica

The road crosses the Tárcoles River Bridge , so there is no parking in the area. Of course, most visitors leave their cars on the side of the road, on a large dirt esplanade near the craft stalls. While there are various places along the road that charge for parking, you can drive up to the esplanade and park for free.

To find the exact location of the Tárcoles River Bridge, you can click here .

Views from the Tárcoles River crocodile bridge

Once you park your car, head to the right side of the bridge, which faces west toward the Pacific coast and Manuel Antonio. You’ll see a sign warning visitors not to swim in the waters. We laughed out loud when we saw this, but then we heard some stories about distracted bathers, so we understood why the sign was there.

What to see from the crocodile bridge of the Tárcoles River

Views from the crocodile bridge of the Tárcoles River

The pollution of the Tárcoles River can be seen with the naked eye. The crocodiles camouflage themselves and disappear in the water, which is brown from the mud and waste that comes from the city of San José and the industries in the area. This stood out to us since generally, Costa Rica is a country that prioritizes the conservation of various species. The curious thing is that despite being the most polluted river in Central America, the Tárcoles River in Costa Rica houses such biodiversity.

Pollution of the Tárcoles River crocodiles in Costa Rica

Seeing the Tárcoles River crocodiles is impressive

The experience of seeing the Tárcoles River crocodiles is impressive. You can see them almost everywhere, both on the sandbanks and in the water. I was amazed watching their slow and precise movements, and seeing many others in an immobile position until a tourist threw some food, and they suddenly jumped up to snatch it. Of course, throwing food is completely prohibited , but some visitors didn’t seem to care.

Information about Costa Rica crocodiles

The Tárcoles River crocodiles are American crocodiles , the largest in the world. They measure between 3-4 meters (9.8-13.1 ft) and can weigh up to 500 kilos (1,000 lbs)! This species can reach a spectacular size on its own, but the crocodiles here can get to about 7 meters (22 ft), thanks to the excess food they receive each day with little effort.

Tárcoles River crocodiles are American crocodiles,

Watching these Tarcoles River crocodiles , I was fascinated by their textured skin and sharp teeth, which show even when their mouths are closed.

Other places to see crocodiles in Costa Rica

If you want to see crocodiles in Costa Rica but prefer a place with greater ecological awareness, you can go to Tortuguero National Park . In addition to witnessing turtles nesting on its beaches, you can sign up for a canoe tour through the channels of this protected area.

This 2-hour excursion will allow you to observe different species of animals in Costa Rica , such as the famous howler monkeys, anteaters, blue herons (among other birds), fish, and, of course, some alligators and crocodiles drying in the sun by the river.

Other places to see crocodiles in Costa Rica apart from Tárcoles River

Sightings are quite frequent since they live in the mouths of rivers and canals in the sea. They usually find a large amount of food here, so they concentrate on the shores in search of their prey.

If you want to know more about this national park, you can consult our guide to Tortuguero National Park .

Other places to visit near the Tárcoles River

Visiting the Tarcoles River Bridge in Costa Rica won’t take too long since you just need to park your car and enjoy the views. Therefore, if you have a flexible itinerary and more time, I recommend some other places to visit near the Tárcoles River :

Carara National Park

Just 10 minutes from the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River  is the spectacular Carara National Park . It’s famous for being home to one of the largest populations of scarlet macaws in the world and for serving as a sanctuary for this endangered species.

Keep in mind that, if you sign up for this tour from San José, you will visit both the Crocodile Bridge and the park on the same day, so it’s super convenient. We ended up visiting the Tárcoles River on our own, but we hired our guide, Ronald , to walk us through the park. We were super happy with the experience!

Carara National Park is close to the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

The truth is that, despite being one of the best areas to spot birds, the vegetation is quite dense , so if you don’t have a trained eye, you may not be able to spot the camouflaged animals among the trees. We were able to observe a scarlet macaw , but I assume that it would not have been possible without Ronald’s help. Therefore, to get the most out of your visit, I recommend hiring a naturalist guide.

Among the different routes in the park, there is also the Laguna Meándrica Trail that takes you to a section of the river where crocodiles are common, although we had better luck with the Tárcoles River Bridge.

Bijagual Waterfall

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica where you can explore incredible natural landscapes, so I suggest adding a few of them to your itinerary. The Bijagual Waterfall is just 20 minutes by car from the Tárcoles River Bridge and is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle where you can fully immerse yourself in nature. It is 328 meters (1,076 ft) high, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the entire country.

Of course, to get there, you will have to leave your car in the parking lot at the entrance, and walk for approximately 50 minutes . It’s worth it, as you can take some fantastic photos from the panoramic lookout point and appreciate all its beauty.

Bijagual Waterfall, another spot to check in the surroundings of the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

If you want to go for a swim, you will have to walk about 300 meters (1,000 ft) more to reach the river. It’s a nice place to stay for a few hours and disconnect, so I recommend you bring everything you need with you. Freshwater pools are great for cooling down on the most humid days, so thank me later!

Now, if you’re staying in the town of Jacó, you can consider this tour , which visits the waterfall and natural pools and includes a horseback ride along the mountain trails.

Jacó Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations where you’ll find large stretches of sand, perfect waves, and lively nightlife. Thanks to its proximity to San José (you can get there in less than two hours by car), it is also frequented by locals, who decide to escape for the weekend to the beautiful Pacific beaches.

There are many things to do in Jacó , but most visitors come here for the relaxed atmosphere, fascinating sunsets, and wide variety of bars and clubs. In addition, it is one of the surfing towns par excellence where you can sign up for these classes and practice your skills. However, the sea currents can be quite strong here, so this isn’t the place to vacation with small children.

Jaco Beach is half an hour away from the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

Among other popular excursions in Costa Rica , you can go horseback riding by the sea or explore the jungle on a quad bike . Jaco Beach is also a strategic point to visit other beaches such as Hermosa and Herradura.

Finally, if you want to travel cheaply , keep in mind that the Jacó area is home to some of the best hotels in Costa Rica , so you can plan a great vacation even on a tight budget.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is another of the most important national parks in Costa Rica , which is why many travelers visit the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge on the way to this protected space. It is one of the most famous sites in the country, so you have probably already taken a look at it when organizing your itinerary.

You can enjoy all kinds of activities here, such as visiting the paradisiacal beaches, taking nature walks, and signing up for some animal-watching excursions.

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the best national parks close to crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur are the two main beaches, so if you’re looking to spend some quiet time lying in the sun, I highly recommend them. However, in my opinion, it’s worth taking advantage of your visit to see the different species that live in this territory. This guided tour through the jungle allows you to observe monkeys, sloths, and birds in total freedom.

Furthermore, when night falls, the animals completely change their behavior, and you can see other species that don’t come out in the light of day. So, consider taking this night tour to explore another facet of this national park.

On the other hand, Manuel Antonio is home to incredible marine fauna that is worth discovering, such as the humpback whales that we were able to spot during our catamaran ride . We also snorkeled among spectacular schools of colorful fish and other sea creatures.

And that’s all about the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge and the surrounding area. I hope this guide helps you plan your visit and you enjoy seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica as much as we did.

If you have any questions or want to share your experience, feel free to leave me a comment below. I will be delighted to hear from you!

Visiting Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge – a Unique Attraction in Costa Rica

Along Costa Rica’s Highway 34 lies one of the most popular bridges in the country – the famous  Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge.

The bridge offers a unique view of the brakish waters of  Rio Tarcoles ,  home to about 2,000 large American Crocodiles  (crocodylus acutus). The crocs enjoy good sunbathing, so it’s common to spot many of them lazing around the banks of the river.

American crocodiles can reach up to 20 feet (6.1 metres) long and weigh 2,000 (907kg) pounds. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the huge crocodiles below the bridge, but the average size of crocs is about 10-15 feet (3-4.5 metres) long.

Here’s a fun fact: the Tarcoles River is known to have one of the highest populations of crocodiles in the world!

About Crocodile Bridge

The Crocodile Bridge goes over the Tarcoles River, and its basin is actually one of the most important in Costa Rica. Its location along the Western Central Valley makes it integral for lots of wildlife, more than just crocodiles. The entire Tarcoles River watershed covers around 2,000km (1,242 mi) and leads all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Tarcoles River also  marks the border of nearby Carara National Park , known worldwide as a bird-watching destination.

If you’re going to explore Costa Rica and your itinerary includes travelling via the Costanera Sur Main Highway (Route 34), the  Crocodile Bridge is an unforgettable (and free!) pitstop  that you don’t want to miss. Pullover en route to see the huge crocodiles, walk along the bridge, and even grab a bite from the small restaurants nearby.

Whether you’re there to stretch your legs for a few minutes or to explore the rest of Tarcoles River on one of their boat tours, Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge is a great spot for a quick adventure.

Tarcoles River Bridge

Here’s what you need to know if you want to visit the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge:

How to Get to Crocodile Bridge, Costa Rica

The Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge is  located in the small town of Tarcoles,  Costa Rica. We highly recommend driving to get there. Since it’s really more of a quick stop, having a car at your own disposal is the most convenient way to experience the Tárcoles Bridge to the fullest.

Note that while shared buses and shuttles do pass the Tarcoles River Bridge to get to their destination, particularly those en route to Jaco, La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio, or Osa Peninsula,  they typically do not stop for photos and sightseeing.

You can search for the bridge on Google Maps, making navigation very easy. The pin appears as  Crocodile Bridge .

San Jose Airport is the closest international airport to the Tárcoles Bridge, located in the small town of Tarcoles. From San Jose, take Highway 27 towards Jaco and Puntarenas, and you’ll reach the bridge in about an hour.

From Jaco, the Tarcoles River Bridge is a quick 20-minute drive away.

By Bus/Shuttle

If you want to see Tarcoles River but are not travelling with a car, you can get there with a combination of busses and taxi. From San Jose, take the 601 San Jose bus to Pozon. From there, it’s a 13-minute taxi ride to the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge.

From Jaco, the 655 Jaco public buses run every 4 hours and take about 40 minutes to get to the bridge. Make sure to let the bus driver know where you’re getting off so you don’t miss your stop! The 655 Jaco bus also runs from San Jose but in the opposite direction, so you can actually board from either station and stop at the bridge. It might take some time for the bus to get back there, but at least you have a lot of time on your hands!

From Puntarenas, hop on the bus to Jaco and get off the Crocodile Bridge.

Streets of San Jose, Costa Rica

If you don’t have a rental car or tour booked, taxis are also another great transportation method to get to the Tarcoles Bridge directly. This is convenient if you’re staying in any of the nearby towns along the Pacific Coast area, such as Jaco, which is only 20 minutes from the bridge.

Parking at Crocodile Bridge

There’s free parking on either side of the Crocodile Bridge, so you won’t have any trouble parking your car. We suggest parking by the northern side, where there are more people and more activity. Some nearby restaurants also offer parking in exchange for a small fee.

Be careful when leaving valuables in your car, as there have been  multiple incidents of theft  around the area. Even locked cars were not spared, so make sure you park somewhere safe and that there’s someone keeping an eye on your vehicle.

Facilities at Crocodile Bridge

Crocodile Bridge has quickly become one of Costa Rica’s unique must-sees. The bridge itself has a pedestrian sidewalk that’s 4-feet wide, with a concrete barrier keeping visitors safe from trucks and cars.

Near the bridge, you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, fruit stalls, and souvenir stands.

In case you need a bathroom break, these shops usually let paying customers use their bathrooms, too. If you aren’t eating or buying anything, there are separate bathrooms behind the plaza that charge a small fee for their facilities.

There are also  Tarcoles Boat Tours  available from Tarcoles Town, just 10 minutes away from the bridge. Tours such as the  Crocodile Man  will let you explore the river on a covered boat and get up close and personal with the crocs and any birds around the area. Make sure to book a tour with a trusted provider.

Tips for Visiting Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge, Costa Rica

Don’t feed the crocodiles. This practice used to be quite popular with tourists and locals. And while raw meat (thing whole chicken) is still sold at stalls around the bridge, we do support the practices of feeding the crocodiles. As always, we let wildlife be wild and recommend that you do the same.

Swimming on the river is not allowed.  This goes without saying: the waters in Tarcoles River are filled with crocodiles, and swimming is prohibited. Even when you go on a boat tour, tour operators will tell you to keep your hands and feet in the boat at all times.

Go early in the morning or early afternoon.  You won’t miss the crocodiles regardless of the time of day you go, but we recommend going earlier in the day. There will be fewer people on the bridge, plus you’ll likely get a better view since more crocodiles tend to come to the surface during the daytime.

Keep an eye out for other wildlife.   The American crocodile is just one of the many animals you’ll find here. The river serves as a natural habitat for many wildlife and birdlife, and some you might see are scarlet macaws, caimans, green-crested basilisks, and large iguanas.

Mind your valuables. There are cases where people return to their cars and find their gadgets missing or their wallets emptied out. Make sure to keep all valuables in your car hidden, or better yet, carry your essentials with you. Some even recommend taking turns visiting the bridge so there’s always someone who can watch over the vehicle.

Dispose of trash responsibly.  Aside from being the most popular in Costa Rica, the Tarcoles River is also, unfortunately, one of the most polluted rivers in the country. While the government and the local community are working on initiatives to clean up the river, it’s important that we, as tourists, do not contribute to the problem.

Crocs in Tarcoles River

Is Crocodile Bridge Safe?

Yes, the Crocodile Bridge is 100% safe for all tourists, including families with small children. There’s a pedestrian barrier that runs the full length of the bridge, ensuring everyone’s safety. Of course, safety goes both ways. Tourists should also behave appropriately while on the Crocodile Bridge, which means no playing around, pretending to hang or fall off the bridge, or doing anything to provoke the crocodiles.

Restaurants near Crocodile Bridge, Costa Rica

Restaurant nambí.

Restaurant Nambí  is one of the more popular restaurants in the area and is located right next to Rio Tarcoles. The spacious, open-air patio-style restaurant also has great views of the river. It’s part of Hacienda Nosavar, a large farm dedicated to livestock, reforestation, ecological tourism, and adventure activities.

The restaurant specializes in  Costa Rican fusion  with a buffet or a la carte options. The buffet usually consists of Costa Rican staples of rice, beans, protein like chicken or beef, and a salad. If you’re interested in ordering off the menu, we recommend their chicken, Casado, and delicious burgers.

Soda El Guácimo

There are many sodas nearby, and one we recommend is  Soda el Guácimo,  which is about 3 minutes away from the river. Like typical sodas, it’s definitely not on the fancy side, but the food more than makes up for it. Head here for  traditional flavours,  and try their gallo pinto, Casado, and Tortilla Aliñada. If you’re around for breakfast, they also have a hearty breakfast menu and great coffee, too.

Frutera Carara

You’ll find this smoothie spot right by the Crocodile Bridge, and it’s a great place to cool down after watching crocodiles in the sun. The fruit stand serves different kinds of fruit smoothies, all made from 100% fresh fruit. Their  Pura Vida smoothie , which is a blend of pineapple, mango, and passionfruit, is a standout, but they have other refreshing drinks and local snacks too. There’s also a parking lot right in front of the store, which is convenient if you’re bringing a car.

The Bottom Line: Is Visiting the Crocodile Bridge Worth It?

The Crocodile Bridge is hands-down  one of the most unique bridges in Costa Rica.  If you’re en route to Jaco or Manuel Antonio or simply driving through Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, we highly recommend stopping by!

Seeing so  many crocodiles in their natural habitat  along the Tarcoles River is a sight you don’t see every day. Besides, the location is convenient whether you have 15 minutes or an hour to spare, and there are  tours , restaurants, and other attractions nearby to keep you entertained.

After you visit the crocs, it’s easy to continue driving to your main destination. Crossing the Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica is worth it and always makes for a fun story to tell!

The Famous Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge at the Tarcoles River

If you are looking to see larger than life crocodiles in Costa Rica, I insist you make a stop at the famous Tarcoles River!  This is on the way to Playa Jaco, Manuel Antonio, and the South Pacific, so if your Costa Rica itinerary has you heading that way, you may as well take a few moments to check out this very well known river.

As an aside, about 16 years ago, when I was on my way to Los Suenos Resort , I was feeding these crocodiles from the bridge and my footage was featured on Animal Planet!  While that is now banned, I enjoyed my moment in the sun and was one of many who lowered chickens to watch the massive crocodiles of Costa Rica battle for a meal.

Here’s a video overview of the famous crocodiles! Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos like this one.

Key Takeaways

  • Experience the American crocodile in its natural habitat at Crocodile Bridge Costa Rica, with diverse wildlife and nearby attractions.
  • Follow safety precautions to have a safe and responsible visit, while supporting local businesses for sustainable tourism.
  • Choose from different tour options or transportation methods like renting a car or taking public transport to get there.

What to Know About the Tarcoles River

This river spans over 2,000 kilometers and leads right to the Pacific Ocean.  It’s beginning is where two unique rivers join forces which creates the border to one side of the Carara National Park.

It’s wild to me that wildlife thrives in this river due to the contamination that exists in the Tarcoles River.  However, on the bright side, the river assists in irrigating agricultural lands and acts as a method to generate electricity.  (Lake Arenal is man-made and serves the same purpose.)

There have been many programs launched from the government down to the locals to help clean up the Tarcoles River, but it’ll be a long process due to several years of contamination.  You won’t want to even entertain the thought of swimming here due to pollution, but putting that aside, I’ve heard stories of locals getting drunk and attempting to swim across it only to be devoured by crocodiles.

*** DO NOT ENTER THIS RIVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. ***

With that disclaimer, make sure to check out the famous Costa Rica crocodile bridge and see something you won’t soon forget.

The Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge, also known as the Tarcoles River Bridge or ‘puente de cocodrilo’, is a sight to behold. This highway bridge, located on the Carretera Pacfica Fernández Oreamuno, provides visitors with a unique opportunity to observe one of nature’s most formidable predators—the American crocodile—in action. The bridge overlooks the Tarcoles River, home to the world’s highest population of crocodiles. This intriguing wildlife spectacle has turned the bridge into a significant tourist destination.

Dozens of these prehistoric beasts can be spotted lounging in the river below from the bridge’s vantage point.

Wildlife at Tarcoles River

While the star attraction of the Tarcoles River is undoubtedly the American crocodile, the river’s ecosystem is teeming with other fascinating creatures as well, including the spectacled caiman. Expect to see a diverse array of wildlife like birds, iguanas, and other reptiles that have made the river their home.

The American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus), also known as huge crocodiles, are the undisputed kings of the Tarcoles River. They typically range in size from 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) long. Despite the river being one of the most polluted in Costa Rica, these resilient predators thrive. They feed on a varied diet that includes:

  • small-to-medium sized mammals

This is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the Tarcoles River.

The Importance of the Tarcoles River

Despite its pollution, the Tarcoles River supports a broad range of wildlife and irrigates agricultural lands, marking its significance. It’s located near popular tourist destinations like Manuel Antonio National Park , making it a hub of biodiversity in the region.

Unfortunately, the river is highly contaminated due to urban development and untreated sewage from Costa Rica’s central valley, making it one of the polluted rivers in the region. The pollution affects the wildlife and ecosystem, potentially causing sickness in animals and threatening biodiversity. Despite these challenges, many species, including crocodiles, continue to thrive, underscoring the resilience of nature.

Planning Your Visit to Crocodile Bridge

Planning your visit to the Crocodile Bridge can enhance your experience, regardless of whether you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or a curious traveler. Knowing about the location, accessibility, visiting hours, and fees associated with visiting the bridge can help you make the most of your trip.

The Crocodile Bridge is located on Route 34, near the town of Tarcoles. It’s completely wheelchair-accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy this unique spectacle. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about entrance fees—you can visit the Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge absolutely free of charge!

Location and Accessibility

The Crocodile Bridge is located approximately 73 kilometers (45 miles) from San Jose , near Hacienda NOSAVAR, over the Tarcoles River—a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts. It’s a straightforward drive of about an hour and 20 minutes from San Jose, depending on traffic.

To reach the bridge from San Jose, the best route is to take Route 1, then Route 27 towards Jaco and Puntarenas, and finally drive on Route 34, where the bridge is located. If you’re already in Jaco, you’re just a quick 20-minute drive north from the thrill of the Crocodile Bridge.

Visiting Hours and Fees

One of the perks of visiting the Crocodile Bridge is that there are no specific visiting hours. However, for the best viewing experience, mornings and early afternoons are recommended.

While the bridge itself is free to visit, parking can be a consideration. There are free parking options available, but be aware of nearby restaurants that might charge for parking. If you’re traveling with luggage, consider taking turns to walk on the bridge, leaving one person with the car at all times. Alternatively, you can negotiate with nearby vendors—perhaps agreeing to purchase a smoothie or meal after your visit—in return for parking fees.

Safety Precautions and Responsible Tourism

While the visit to the Crocodile Bridge is an exciting adventure, prioritizing your safety and the welfare of the wildlife is essential. Here are some safety precautions to observe and promote responsible tourism:

  • Keep an eye on your car’s security.
  • Stay alert on the bridge and avoid leaning over the railing.
  • Do not feed or provoke the crocodiles.
  • Respect the Costa Rican wildlife and their natural habitat.
  • Follow any instructions or guidelines provided by park staff.

By following these safety precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience at the Crocodile Bridge.

Feeding the crocodiles is a big no-no. Not only does it disrupt their natural behavior and diet, but it’s also against the law in Costa Rica. Keeping a safe distance from the crocodiles and not engaging in risky behavior such as hanging off the bridge or climbing over the railing is fundamental to ensuring your safety.

Dos and Don’ts

A few basic rules need to be followed when visiting the Crocodile Bridge. Avoid risky behavior such as hanging off the bridge or climbing over the railing—these actions can put you in danger and disturb the wildlife. Adults should also keep an eye on children at all times to avoid any accidents.

Moreover, never attempt to feed the crocodiles. This disrupts their natural behavior, is harmful to their health, and contravenes the Costa Rican law. By respecting these dos and don’ts, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, contributing to the preservation of this unique wildlife spectacle.

Supporting Local Businesses

Besides observing wildlife, visiting the Crocodile Bridge also presents an opportunity to support local businesses. Nearby, you’ll find several restaurants offering delicious local cuisine. One such place is Hacienda NOSAVAR (Restaurant Nambi), which is highly recommended.

Purchasing local crafts and wildlife-related souvenirs is another way to support the local economy. These actions help stimulate local job creation, boost spending, and foster community development in Tarcoles, ultimately contributing to sustainable tourism.

Unfortunately, Tarcoles River is one of the most contaminated and polluted rivers in Costa Rica. Despite the contamination, an abundance of wildlife depends on the river for survival due to its key location. Furthermore, the river also helps irrigate agricultural lands and generates electricity.

The government and local community has implemented programs to clean up the river but it already has many years of contamination so it will take a long process to clean. It is considered an unsafe place to swim obviously. It is best to check it out from a distance, especially because of the sheet amount of crocodiles in this river!

If you’re driving, you can park on either side, there are spaces to park in front of the shops or restaurants. We highly recommend taking turns to the bridge, so that one person can stay with the car at all times if you have luggage in the car. Car theft can occur here so take your valuables, roll up windows and lock your doors. Try to park where all the other tourist buses are.

After you park your car, walk onto the bridge. There is a pedestrian barrier running the full length of the bridge but be careful if crossing the street since cars drive very fast on the bridge.

The crocodiles move around sometimes so they’ll be on the right or left hand side, straight down. Peer down slowly and you will be blown away by the sheer amount of huge crocodiles laying right under the bridge.

Today our car was broken into just minutes after we parked our car to see the crocodiles at the Tarcoles River bridge. Car doors were locked but they still found a way to get in and steal our credit card and $400 cash. They rummaged through all of our packs and tried to zip it all back so we would be unaware of the theft. The only reason we knew something was up was because they threw my camera lens into the back seat and forgot to put it back into my camera bag. To our surprise, they left our computers, phones and camera equipment and only took our money and Credit card. Within 90 minutes, they had made $3000 in purchases at the local Walmart. We asked locals why were were lucky with our valuable items and they said their main goal is money and NOT stuff. Once they found the credit card, their main goal was buying time to rack up purchases… which is why they didn’t steal our stuff. I’m a veteran traveler, traveling outside the US 3+ weeks a year and still fell victim. Warning! Don’t leave cars unattended in Costa rica for any reason… and take valuables out with you.

Any idea why they hang out there? Just asking for a friend.

April 12, 2022

The locals feed the crocodiles to get them to stay right under the bridge, so that the tourists stop at the bridge to see the crocodiles.

Just letting you know and any one else stopping by that the Hacienda NOSAVAR is no longer there. There’s two larger restaurants on both sides of the highway and lots of little shops afterwards but none that look like they have a view of the river. Crocs are still there 😀

February 10, 2022

hi Sam, thanks for the feedback, looks like they moved the restaurant onto the other side.

Can you suggest any other good places to stop at when travelling from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio? Thank you!

December 12, 2021

Jaco is a good stop for food as it has a ton of options

September 22, 2022

No. Only that bridge!

Emily Jolliff says

November 12, 2021

Is this bridge worth driving out of your way to if you going from the San Jose Airport to Manual Antonio?

November 13, 2021

You’ll pass the bridge on this route if you’re going on ROute 34

February 9, 2018

What a ride! We saw beautiful birds, but the amount and size of the crocodiles was amazing! Keep your hands in the boat!!!

February 13, 2017

I am in Monteverde and want to go to the beaches (Manuel Antonio etc) next. I also would love to see these crocs. They offer a shuttle including the tarcolis for $159,- That is 109,- more then the just the shuttle to Manuel. I figured it might be cheaper to go from Manuel to the crocs myself. Do you have any suggestion?

Is that with a tour down the Tarcoles river? Or you just want to stop at the bridge and see the crocs because an extra $109 just to stop and see the crocodiles is a lot. The river boat tour down Tarcoles river is $55 with transportation when you book the tour with the company like Jose’s Crocodile Tour. You could take the bus instead which is cheaper and take the bus from Monteverde to Puntarenas, Puntarenas to Jaco and then take the crocodile river tour from Jaco. And then you can take a bus from Jaco to Manuel Antonio easily.

I read in the news that someone fell( or jump) off the bridge and was met with the unthinkable fate of eaten alive by the crocs. Not a place I want to hang out for long. Sorry to hear about this person’s misfortune.

I’d love to see all these crocodiles in the wild! They always *seem* harmless because they hardly move…yes, i really just said that haha

April 23, 2014

Haha I agree, they are cool to look at… from a distance lol

Globalmouse says

Oh my goodness they are SO scary!!! I would love to see them in the wild like this but I would be so scared….those terrible little teeth!! Your photos are brilliant.

Thanks! I know the upclose picture of the one with all their teeth hanging out… I would not want to be in between those!

Marysia @ My Travel Affairs says

Wow, the crocodiles! So many in one place! Would love to see that!

It’s pretty cool!

Katie @ From Shores to Skylines says

April 18, 2014

I love that picture of the croc walking – it looks so awkward, but you know its deadly! The rest kind of remind of one of those Indiana Jones movies with all the crocodiles waiting at the bottom of the river to gobble you up. I can’t believe the guides get out and feed them – that sounds about as safe as a swim would be.

I know right? They are crazy! But I guess they love it and it does give a great thrill. No thank you for me though, I will be watching several (hundred) feet away!

April 17, 2014

Scary, scary, SCARY. Amazing that they have endured since prehistoric times.

I know isn’t that crazy? All those teeth… scary!

April 16, 2014

I hate to pick on your number but I have to say 25/mxm is not possible but more like 25/kmxkm. They sure look big in your photo. Each is probably over 2 meters long and weighs more than 100 kilos. Amazing sight to see so many crocs in one place. I am glad I was not there to do bridge survey when the bridge was built.

Thanks Dad 🙂

Rio Tarcoles: Visit Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge

Rio Tarcoles: Visit Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge

Rio Tarcoles (or Tárcoles River in English) in Costa Rica is a habitat for American crocodiles, several species of birds from egrets to herons, and wildlife such as monkeys and sloths.

The bridge (known as Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge) which goes over Rio Tarcoles is a popular place to stop when driving from the San Jose area to the Central or South Pacific coast. It is located directly on the main road and offers great views of large crocodiles sunning themselves below.

The Crocodiles

tarcoles

The crocodiles you will see on the Tarcoles River are American crocodiles. The males can grow up to 20 ft long (6.1 meters) and weigh up to 2,000 lbs (907 kilos).  Females are smaller and rarely get larger than 12 ft 6 in in length.

They are one of the only crocodiles to not mind salt water systems and usually prefer lakes and mangrove swamps.

They live on average between 50 and 70 years old.

This area has the largest population of crocodiles in Central America.

How to Visit the Crocodile Bridge

Rio Tarcoles: Visit Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge

The crocodile bridge is located in the Central Pacific region of the country not far from Jaco .

If you are driving with a rental car from the San Jose area to any of the Central or South Pacific beach towns you will cross over the crocodile bridge. So, why not stop?

From San Jose , you will take Route 27 towards the coast. You will then exit onto Route 34 towards Jaco/ Manuel Antonio .

In total, the drive from San Jose International Airport to Rio Tarcoles will take a little over an hour (on a good day without traffic).

Here is a map to show you exactly where the bridge is located on Route 34. When you enter it on your GPS unit you can search for “Crocodile Bridge” and it should come up.

On the map, I also marked “Pops” which is an ice cream shop that is a good place to stop.

A couple of things to note:

– We suggest renting a car as your transportation option in Costa Rica. We have a 10% discount plus other great perks for you with our favorite rental local car company, Adobe.

Rio Tarcoles: Visit Costa Rica’s Crocodile Bridge

Adobe Rent-a-Car

  • 10% discount for Costa Rica Vibes readers
  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

– If you prefer to take a private shuttle to your destination and book with Adobe Transfers , they will be happy to stop at Rio Tarcoles for you to check it out.

– The road from San Jose to the Pacific coast is a toll road. The toll booths accept USD or Costa Rican colones. The drive will cost a little under $10.

– Be careful on Route 27. There are several spots in which the road goes from two lanes on one side down to one lane and these changes can be somewhat sudden.

– On Friday afternoon the traffic can be bad from San Jose toward the coast. And on the other side of that, the traffic from the coast back to San Jose is usually bad on Sunday afternoons.

There are a few tourist shops on the side of the road before you cross over the bridge. You are able to park in their parking lots for a small fee.

We usually park at the Pops ice cream shop and get an ice cream before going to the bridge. It is a good spot for a snack and they have never charged us for parking since we are also purchasing something from them.

We suggest hiding anything of extreme value or taking it with you from your car while on the bridge.

Also, be careful when on the bridge. There is a pedestrian barrier on the bridge, but definitely look out when crossing the street here. Drivers don’t usually slow down.

This should be a given, but do not swim in Rio Tarcoles or get too close to the crocodiles. I’m sure they would love to eat you as a tasty snack.

Taking a Rio Tarcoles Tour

rio tarcoles boat

If you would like a more up close visit with the crocodiles, we suggest taking a Rio Tarcoles boat tour. These tours are conducted by experienced guides who can point out tons of wildlife besides just crocodiles.

The guides carry binoculars so you can get a closer view of the animals.

There are a few tours we like. They are:

From San Jose: Hike in Carara Park & Tarcoles River Adventure

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars on Viator | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   8 to 12 hours | ✅  Book it!

This tour includes pick up from your San Jose area hotel. It is a full fun day adventure that consists of going to Carara National Park where you will hike the trails with an experienced guide. Carara National Park is a great place for bird watching.

Next, you will go to the mouth of Rio Tarcoles where you will board a relaxing boat trip down the river to see crocodiles.

Finally, your tour group will finish your day at the beach before returning to San Jose. It’s the perfect way to get out of the city for the day and embrace the wildlife.

From Jaco: Safari One Day Tour with Butterflies Monkeys Crocodiles Birds

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   7 hours | ✅   Book it!

This tour is actually one of the coolest things we think you can do in Jaco.

It’s a full-day experience that includes a visit to a butterfly garden, seeing monkeys up close, lunch, and seeing the crocodiles on Rio Tarcoles.

↪ Arrange Your Crocodile Adventure 🐊

From Puntarenas Cruise Terminal: Puntarenas Highlights 6 in 1 Shore Excursion

⭐️  RATING:  4.5/5 Stars on Viator | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   6 hours | ✅  Book it!

This fun filled day tour from the cruise terminal includes:

  • Cultural Shopping Stops : Dive into local culture at a replica Spanish Village, and grab unique souvenirs to remember your trip.
  • Puntarenas City Sightseeing : Conclude with a tour of the vibrant city of Puntarenas, soaking in its charm and vitality.

What to Do After

We usually visit this bridge on our way to or from the Pacific coast coming from the San Jose area. So, usually, we don’t do anything after except head to our destination because we don’t like leaving all of our luggage in the car.

However, if you are in the area as a day trip there are two great things to do nearby.

Carara National Park

carara

Carara National Park is located about 10-minute drive from the Costa Rica crocodile bridge. This national park is a great place for bird watching and just enjoying some nature on well-maintained hiking trails.

The Tarcoles River forms the northern boundary of the park, so you can see Central American crocodiles throughout most of the year here.

Check out the Carara National Park guide for all the info on planning your visit.

Playa Blanca

playa blanca

Playa Blanca is one of our favorite beaches in Costa Rica. It is technically located in a private resort, but there is a way to access it without being a resort guest.

We love this spot for the usually calm turquoise waters, white sands, and free charcoal grill spots which you are welcome to use.

Check out our Playa Blanca guide for all the details on visiting.

Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge: A Stop to See Crocs

  • Jenn and Matt

If you are visiting Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, a fun stop between destinations is the famous Tarcoles River crocodile bridge. This bridge has giant crocodiles sunbathing and swimming below. You can park right off the main highway and walk onto the bridge to see them for yourself. This is a perfect, free activity to help break up a long drive. In this post, we’ll give you all the details to plan a stop.

Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

The Tarcoles River crocodile bridge is located on Route 34, a mostly two-lane highway that runs from north to south along Costa Rica’s central and southern Pacific coast.

The bridge is a convenient stop on the way to destinations like Jaco , Manuel Antonio , Dominical, and Uvita .

From the San Jose Airport (SJO), the drive to the bridge is about 1-1.25 hours, depending on traffic. Jaco is about 30 minutes south and Manuel Antonio is about 1.5 hours from the bridge.

As the name implies, the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge crosses the Tarcoles River. This wide river flows all the way from the mountains in Costa Rica’s Central Valley before emptying into the Gulf of Nicoya/Pacific Ocean.

The Tarcoles River is most famous for its crocodiles but sadly is also known as one of the country’s most polluted rivers. This is largely because its headwaters start in Costa Rica’s most populated areas. Regardless, the river is beautiful and teeming with birds and of course many crocodiles.

Tarcoles River Costa Rica

Arriving and Parking at the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

When arriving at the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge (from the north going south), you’ll see a cluster of souvenir shops and small restaurants just before the bridge. This is where you will park.

Often a parking attendant will help you pull in and find a spot. These attendants work for tips. It is customary to give them some change or a small bill when leaving (around 500 colones or about $1).

Tip: Even though the parking attendants are around and can watch your car to some extent, there is a lot of coming and going in the area. If you are traveling with your luggage, we recommend taking turns walking onto the bridge so that someone stays with the car, just to be safe. In the past, car break-ins were very common here. The situation has improved but it could still happen.

Parking at Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge

Walking Onto the Crocodile Bridge

Both sides of the Tarcoles River crocodile bridge have sidewalks and railings now so you can walk out safely without interfering with traffic. Cars and trucks usually slow down over the bridge but use caution as you will still be very close to the busy highway.

It is also important to note that the railings have a lot of space between them where young kids could slip through. Be careful with small children or just skip it altogether.

Each side of the bridge offers a different view of the river. Both are worth checking out. Just be sure to walk back towards the parking area to cross over and don’t try to jump over the concrete barriers. Cars can appear quickly!

During busy tourist months, holidays, and weekends, the bridge can get busy but is usually not too crowded. Since the bridge is long and most people only spend 10-15 minutes looking at the crocodiles, there is usually plenty of space.

Tourists on Crocodile Bridge

The Crocodiles

The crocodiles found in the Tarcoles River are American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus). These can reach up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) long and weigh up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg)! Though some giant ones frequent the bridge, many are about 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) long.

Crocodile under Tarcoles River Bridge

In our experience, most of the crocodiles can be seen from the middle part of the bridge on either side. They are down below in the river, about 30-40 feet (9-12 meters) away.

Which side of the bridge has more crocodiles depends on the time of year and rainfall. During our last visit, the water was higher so most of the crocodiles were perched in the water. On other visits when the water was lower, we have seen more crocs sunbathing in clusters on the riverbanks.

Crocodile in Rio Tarcoles

Feeding the Crocs

Though it may sound fun, it is important not to toss any food down to the crocodiles. The wrong diet can be bad for them. Equally important, it is forbidden by Costa Rican law to feed them.

The crocodiles have plenty to eat and naturally prey on birds, small-to-medium sized mammals, turtles, crabs, snails, frogs, and anything else they might find in or around the river.

Amenities at the Crocodile Bridge

In addition to the main attraction (the crocodiles), this area has developed into a tourism rest stop in recent years, with some useful amenities. There are a couple of small sodas (local restaurants), a Pops ice-cream shop, coffee shop, a few souvenir stands, a fruit stand, and two small convenience stores.

For those needing a restroom break, the restaurants will allow customers to use the bathrooms. Or if you aren’t eating, there is a separate bathroom behind the plaza on the far left. They charge a small fee (about 500 colones/$1).

Souvenir Shops at the Tarcoles River

Getting a Closer Look

If gazing at the crocodiles from up on the bridge isn’t enough and you want a closer view, there is a way. Crocodile tours are available in the nearby town of Tarcoles (10 minutes away).

Crocodile tours bring you along the Tarcoles River on a covered boat. You’ll get very up close and personal with many crocodiles and be able to see the river’s exotic bird species as well. Tours last about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

To learn more about a crocodile tour we recommend out of Tarcoles, read our post, A Riverboat Adventure on the Tarcoles River .

Close up Crocodile on Boat Tour

A stop at the Tarcoles River Crocodile Bridge is a great way to stretch your legs and break up a long drive. This was one of the first stops we ever made when we began to explore Costa Rica many years ago. We hope you’ll add it to your adventure too.

Y ustedes dirán, ¿Gero qué vas a hacer?
