Tour Highlights
- North of the buzzing tourist-oriented center, immerse yourseld in exploring the old Pokhara. This is the perfect place to step back in time and discover the city as it once was.
- As the second largest lake in the country, Phewa Lake is the city’s most coveted attraction. Along the eastern shore, you will find a plethora of bars and restaurants, whereas southwestern parts of the lakeside are more ripe for nature exploration.
- Davi’s Falls is located in the southern part of Pokhara. The plunging stream of water from Phewa Lake drops into a 150-meter-long underground tunnel. Try your luck at the at wishing pond near the waterfall.
- Pokhara is home to three of the world's highest mountains — Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m) and Manaslu (8,163 m); and is the starting point for famous treks in Nepal like the Annapurna Base Camp trek , Annapurna Circuit hike , and Poonhill trek . For the more adventurous, Dhaulagiri Circuit trek is definitely a beautiful challenge. Grab your hiking boots and go on a long trek through various ethnic settlements along the foothills of Annapurnas.
- Pokhara Shanti Stupa is perched atop of the Ananda (Peaceful) Hill on the southern shore of the lake. Nepal’s first World Peace Pagoda is also a great spot to get views of the Phewa Lake and its Himalayan backdrop. You can reach this Stupa on foot as well.
- Also, check out the Taal Barahi Temple that sits atop a rock in the middle of Phewa Lake. You will need to catch a boat.

I had an absolutely wonderful time with North Nepal Travel & Trek, fast-packing/running through the Annapurna area for 10 days in January. My guide Zeewan is the best of the best! He knows these mountains like the back of his hand and is full of local knowledge about the landscape, weather, food, flora & fauna. As well as being kind & humble, he is extremely fit and strong, an elite mountain athlete who will go whatever speed you need. Watching him move through this landscape was truly inspirational! His English is great, and as well as being a top-tier guide he is a lovely travel companion, full of smiles and laughter. At the teahouses we passed (even the ones we didn’t stop at), everyone seemed to know him and told me how lucky I was to have him as my guide- he is clearly very well respected by all. Mohan from North Nepal Travel & Trek introduced me to Zeewan over a meal upon my arrival in Pokhara (we also had a great debrief meal afterwards!). I knew from the start that I was in capable hands with this team, who created an itinerary which we adapted on the fly to suit our needs. Main points reached were Poon Hill, Muldai Viewpoint, Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp- all truly spectacular along with all the beautiful scenery & villages in between. All my food/accomodation & transfers were taken care of and we chatted through gear beforehand, so all I needed to focus on was moving through the majestic mountains. Whilst testing my limits, I always felt safe and well looked after and couldn’t recommend this team highly enough! Thanks also to Rajiv Shrestha from Fit Nepal who initially fielded my inquiries and was always quick to respond with extremely helpful info & trip suggestions. Thank you all so much for such a phenomenal experience, I will be recommending you to all my friends and certainly hope to come back again someday!

I’m 66yo. Having just finished both Langtang and EBC, my bones were looking for something a bit less strenuous. Mardi Himal was exactly what I was looking for! Five days were just enough, but if I was younger, I’d do a lot more here. Annapurna is a great area to trek. After you finish with the incessantly annoying helicopters of the EBC trek, Pokhara is far more natural and restoring. I chilled by the lake, and met lots of other more experienced hikers who came to the region. But the most important factor that made Mardi Himal so great was North Nepal Trekking. First of all was the degree of service and help I got from the office staff. They looked after me way better than I thought should be expected. Staff there also had a HUGE amount of knowledge about the area, the experience, and how to deal with a demanding client like me. Critical to the fun and enjoyment of my trek up Mardi Himal was my guide: Rajkumar. This unassuming guy made the day fun as he pointed out various pieces of trivia all day long, and lifted my spirits with the occasional gag or joke. What a great attitude Raj has, and I hope some day I can do more hiking with him. Raj made my trip – he’s a prince! Hope to see you guys again!

Pokhara Travel Guide 2024 with 6 Best Things to Do!
This is a complete Pokhara travel guide, full of where to stay, things to do, where to eat and more.
Compared to the hectic, dusty and busy capital of Kathmandu in Nepal , Pokhara was an oasis of calm.
I instantly felt a bohemian traveller vibe, which was exactly what I was after. A great place to find peace and relax, I knew I was going to love it here.
The locals were so friendly and welcoming, there were plenty of amazing restaurants and all the action was centred around a majestic sparkling lake with a backdrop of the Annapurna mountain range!
Could this be heaven on earth?
I took a few days out of the blogging/social media world here just to chill out and unwind and I would highly recommend Pokhara as the place to take it easy on your Nepal travels.
Here’s a helpful Pokhara travel guide on what to do, and where to stay and eat!
Table of Contents
The ultimate Pokhara travel guide
How to reach pokhara in nepal.
There are no trains in Nepal due to the mountain ranges which pretty much cover the whole country, so if you’re heading here overland buses and private taxis are the only way to travel.
Air-conditioned tourist buses will cost you anything from $8 (800 Nepalese rupees) to $35!
To be fair, this ‘luxury bus’ had a hostess, fridge, massive seats and drinks and meals included but it’s SO not necessary to pay that much.
It will still go the same old route as all the others. Popular bus companies are Blue Sky Travels and Greenline (both recommended by Lonely Planet).
But there are also plenty of other companies too. I would definitely recommend that you try to get a seat near the front of the bus as the roads are pretty bumpy, winding and sketchy.
You’ll be spinning around the corners of mountain ranges at top speed and then drop down is pretty scary to look at!
Related Post: a detailed guide for bus travel in Nepal
Local buses are around $5 (500 NPR) but I wouldn’t recommend it. The dust pollution on the roads is some of the worst I have come across in my travels in Asia.
Depending on the time of year, it will also be HOT. So, you’ll need the window open and you’ll breathe in all the dust yuck!
I would also try not to travel over the festival period as when we were here during Dussehra in October all the buses were charging double.
Taking the bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara
All 50 bus companies which were heading to Pokhara were sold out as locals wanted to visit their hometowns over the festival period.
In the end, as all the A/C tourist buses seemed to leave at 7 am to Thamel, the traffic on the roads was so bad that it took us 12 hours to get here instead of six. It was a bit of a nightmare.
You can avoid all the above and fly for around $100 but this may be out of the price range of many backpackers and travellers.
From here Pokhara has bus links to Chitwan , Lumbini and Kathmandu .
Kathmandu has the only International airport in Nepal, so if you were thinking of heading to a different country, you have to return there.
How to travel around Pokhara in Nepal
- Nepalese rupees, US dollars and even Indian rupees are accepted in Nepal.
- Namaste means hello and goodbye in Nepalese
- Taxis are the main way to get around the town and to visit the tourist attractions. These all seem to have a hefty price tag.
- If you’re willing to give it a try, there are local buses which can get you around the town for pennies. The buses will head out opposite the Barahi temple (Barahi Chowk). These will take you to a place called Pidota (I’m not sure how it’s spelt but that’s what it sounded like), then from here you can catch a bus to Devi’s Falls, the Mahendra caves and even the Peace Pagoda.
The best hotels to stay in Pokhara
There are a plethora of different hotels all over Pokhara, but by far the best area to stay is as near to Fewa Lake as you can!
Personally, I stayed at both the Silver Oaks Inn and Hotel Iceland which had an awesome pool to take the heat off.
Both included breakfast ranging from $20 – $30 a night and had a gorgeous view of the mountains from our window.
There are also a fair few luxury options including the Fish Tail Lodge which is situated on the lake and has a fine dining restaurant.
For budget options, there are plenty of hostels, guest houses and homestays which you can stay in starting from $2 a night!
I found that most hotels all over Nepal were spotlessly clean and had excellent hospitality. So, you don’t need to spend an awful lot to get a great night’s sleep.
Top things to do in Pokhara
Most of the action in Pokhara centres around the gorgeous Fewa Lake.
My personal favourite moments were just relaxing in one of the beach hut-type bars/cafés set up with a drink and a good book.
But, there is plenty more to keep you occupied here than just relaxing. If you’ve got itchy feet and want to explore, here are some places to visit in Pokhara.
Fewa Lake (Phewa Lake)
When you first see Fewa Lake, you can’t help but just gasp.
Not only because it’s absolutely gigantic, but because it has the most stunning colour which sparkles in the light.
You will instantly fall in love with it and want to come back forever.
It would be almost criminal to come to Pokhara and not take a boat ride on the lake while you’re here. So, get your arms ready!
Although you can get a boat ride with a guide, a self-guided tour is all the more fun. I got a two-hour ride as I wasn’t sure how long or how far I would go in that time! But, if you’re relatively fit, you can easily explore the lake at this time.
A two-hour ride cost 620 Nepalese rupees which included the compulsory life jacket hire. It was tough work, well for my boyfriend at least ;).
But, when you stop to take a break, it is so calm on the lake. You’ll feel like you’ve entered paradise.
Barahi Temple
The Barahi temple has an air of mystery to it as it’s situated on Fewa Lake and can only be accessed by boat.
It’s a Hindu temple that’s dedicated to the Goddess Durga who is the protector of the gods.
As we were here over the Dussehra festival period, the temple was extremely busy with pilgrims offering and being blessed by the priests in the temple.
Personally, I had the most fun feeding the many pigeons which reside here. I think a bag was around 100 NPR but it was such a laugh.
The children who were visiting the temple were scaring the crap out of them and when the pigeons flew, I also got scared!
A boat ride here from the Barahi ferry dock will cost you a 100 rupees return.
You have to pay 10 rupees for a compulsory life jacket which will be quite disgusting in the heat.
Then it’s a bit of a cattle market to get on the ferry. As usual in Asia, there are no queues. It’s every man for himself. So, just hop on!
Peace Pagoda (Shanti stupa)
The Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) can be seen from the Fewa Lake and has fantastic views of Pokhara, Fewa Lake, Annapurna and beyond.
This temple is relatively new and officially opened as a tourist attraction in 1999.
Built by the Japanese, it was the first Peace Pagoda that was built in Nepal. This is a fantastic place for the sunset and there are a number of ways to reach it.
One is to grab a return ferry from the Barahi dock and walk the steep climb up to the top for 800 rupees.
The other is to get a taxi there for 1500 rupees or, you can do what I did and get the local bus all the way up.
The price for the bus was around 75 rupees one way (I caught 3 buses in total from the lakeside) but, be prepared for not having a way back down!
As we got up here, we were expecting buses to be making their way back down the hill but to our surprise, there weren’t any at the Peace Pagoda entrance after sunset!
We then had to head back down the winding hill in the dark. It was pretty sketchy as it was pitch black but luckily, as we were taking photos to remember our ridiculous mistake a local bus pulled up to take us back to Pokhara. Life saved.
Devi’s Falls
Both of these attractions are in the same place on opposite sides of the main road and so only need a short bus or taxi journey from the main Pokhara area.
Devi’s Falls is a waterfall that heads underground and you can hear its roar from afar.
Supposedly, a Swiss traveller called Miss Davis was taking a bath in the falls and was swept away with her husband.
Her body took a few days to retrieve hence the name Devi’s Falls. But, there are numerous legends around this – I’m just quoting the one from the signs there.
It is pretty but you only really need around 20 minutes here as a lot of the falls are barred up to save other tourists from making the same mistake.
I really enjoyed the garden surrounding the falls and the cute little wish fountain at the end!
I’m always addicted to these things and threw quite a few coins to make my wish come true! :p
Devi’s Falls ticket prices are 30 Nepalese rupees
Mahendra cave
The inside of the Mahendra caves was a little disappointing and was really just simply a cave with a small deity statue inside and a plastic cow in the ‘cow shed’.
But the colourful architecture of the winding staircase to enter the temple was the part that I loved the most.
You don’t need long to explore the cave, I’d say like 15 minutes at most. But, if you’re feeling hot you could stay longer as a respite from the heat.
It can get super slippy inside so make sure you hold on to the railings if you don’t have a grip on your shoes like me (lol).
Mahendra Cave ticket prices are 50 Nepalese rupees
Annapurna Circuit (ABC)
Although I didn’t personally undertake this trek (criminal I know but I just wanted to relax), the Annapurna circuit is one of the main reasons why people flock here.
This trek is one of the most beautiful that you can undertake in the entire world and if you’re visiting when the weather is clear you get crystal clear views of the Annapurna mountain range and the famous ‘Fishtail’ mountain.
There are many different options for treks here including the Poon hill trek and the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) depending on your time and budget.
You can pay for a guide and a porter to take your luggage but a lot of backpackers were just going it alone without a guide and staying in the tea houses which sounded cool.
I visited Pokhara in the ‘shoulder’ season, so we didn’t have crystal clear views of the mountains which I would have liked every day.
But, on the last day, we did get a glimpse of the Annapurna mountain range and the Fishtail! Finally, I got a glimpse.
If you have the budget you can also undertake paragliding or a helicopter ride to the Annapurna base camp which will take 15 minutes as opposed to 15 days haha!
But it’s entirely dependent on your budget and the weather. A helicopter ride was around $350 per person.
Best restaurant in Pokhara: Tara’s Nepalese vegetarian restaurant
A lot of the restaurants in Pokhara can stretch a traveller’s budget for sure.
Mainly, the ones by the lake or on the main street have big price tags and add around 23% in service charges and tax.
So, if you’re strapped for cash there are a few options that are kind to your wallet and provide tasty wholesome meals.
One of these restaurants is Tara’s. Hidden off the main street with only around 5/6 tables, Tara cooks up Nepalese homemade meals at an affordable price.
We tried the veg and chocolate momos, egg curry and the lunch special and all were yummy and hygienic.
Also, no meal goes above 300 NPR and includes service and tax. You can’t ask for better.
If you’re wondering what goes inside a chocolate momo, it’s chocolate, coconut, cinnamon and nuts! I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect but they were so delicious.
They use a sweeter batter so it works. Weird, but it works.
Make sure you put Pokhara on your bucket list!
Pokhara is a traveller haven for a good reason in Nepal, it’s laid back and will make you want to stay forever.
You can chill by the lake, take it easy before/after a long trek or just enjoy the calm nature and beauty of the mountains.
I’d definitely leave some breathing room for Pokhara in your Nepal itinerary as you may arrive and never want to leave!

27 dead as Indian tourist bus plunges into Marsyangdi
Samjhana Rasaili & Hariram Upreti
At least 27 Indian nationals were killed and 16 others injured when a bus with an Indian registration number plunged into the Marsyangdi river at Anbukhaireni Rural Municipality in Tanahun district on Friday.
The bus was en route to Kathmandu from Pokhara when it skidded off the road at Ainapahiro in ward 2 of the rural municipality and fell about 150 metres into the river at around 11:30 am.
While 26 people died on the spot, one more succumbed to injuries at the Old Medical College in Chitwan, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Santosh Paudel of the District Traffic Police Office, Tanahun.
The injured were flown to Kathmandu on a Nepal Army helicopter. A total of 15 people are being treated at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj.
Dr Dinesh Kafle, director at the TU Teaching Hospital, told the Post on Friday evening that the injured had been admitted there, and one more injured was on the way.
Six of them are in critical condition. “One person is being treated in intensive care, and another is undergoing a surgery,” Kafle told the Post late in the evening. “Some critically injured patients may need intensive care, and we are trying to arrange additional [ICU] beds for them.”
Those brought to the hospital have serious wounds on various parts of their bodies.
It took nearly seven hours for the personnel of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army to rescue the injured and pull dead passengers from the crash site.
Arjun Khanal, a tourism entrepreneur who was at the crash site, described the scene as extremely harrowing.
“We arrived at the scene within 5 to 7 minutes of the accident and witnessed a terrifying sight,” said Khanal. “The bus had fallen about 150 metres down the road, and people were screaming for help. Three injured passengers were trying to escape through the bus windows.”
He said that the difficult terrain made the rescue operation extremely challenging. “People were crying for help, but bringing them up to the road was very difficult,” he said.
The tourists from Maharashtra, India, had set out from Pokhara for Kathmandu at 5am on Friday. They had travelled from Mumbai via Gorakhpur on a six-day tour of Nepal. They had booked a bus from Kesarwani Transport Travels in Gorakhpur to enter Nepal through the Belahiya border point in Rupandehi district. They were heading to Kathmandu for a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, and had also booked a hotel at Gaushala, Kathmandu, for Friday evening. Unfortunately, their journey ended in an accident.
“They had stayed at my hotel last night,” said Durga Prasad Pandey, a hotelier in Pokhara. “We were in a different vehicle, when suddenly we heard news of the bus crash.”
“The accident happened at around 11 am,” he said. “ There was a light drizzle, and the bus had just crossed a bend and was moving forward,” he added. “We heard that the driver might have felt dizzy, causing the bus to fall, but the exact cause will be revealed later. When we arrived at the accident site, the scene was horrifying and unbearable to watch.”
Rescuers at the accident site said big boulders on the riverbank prevented the bus from sinking into the river.
“We learned about the accident from a motorcyclist,” said Sagar Thapa of ward 9 in Palungtar Municipality of Gorkha. “When we arrived at the scene, the police were already setting up ropes. We joined the rescue efforts, and it was evident that rocks had stopped the bus from sinking into the river. Without those rocks, the river would have carried the bus off.”
Thapa said they retrieved 14 bodies immediately after the accident. “The scene was chaotic, with people desperately shouting for help,” Thapa said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Raya of the District Police Office, Tanahun, said the cause of the accident remains unknown.
“The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. We have been engaged in rescue operations throughout the day, and investigations will begin now,” he said. More than 200 personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and local volunteers were involved in the rescue efforts.
The post-mortem of victims will be conducted at the Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences in Pokhara. Anbukhaireni Rural Municipality Chairman Shukra Chuman said the bodies will be sent to Pokhara for autopsy.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said it is in constant touch with local authorities and the hospital staff for treatment of the injured and the earliest repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased to India.
“@IndiainNepal is grieved to confirm the death of 27 Indians in the unfortunate road accident in Tanahun. The remaining 16 passengers have been airlifted to Kathmandu for further treatment at TU Teaching Hospital. Embassy mourns the loss of lives & prays for early recovery of the injured,” the embassy said in a post on X.
The embassy has shared emergency relief numbers: +977-9851107021, +977-9851316807 and +977-9749833292.

PM Modi Offers Aid For Nepal Bus Crash Victims After Tragic Accident Kills At Least 27 Indians
Curated By : Rohit

Kathmandu, Nepal
Security force personnel work to rescue injured passengers after a bus carrying Indian passengers traveling to Kathmandu from Pokhara plunged into a river in Tanahun District, Gandaki Province, Nepal August 23, 2024. (Reuters)
The death toll from the Nepal bus crash involving Indian pilgrims has risen to 41. Post-mortems are underway in Chitwan before repatriation to Maharashtra
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased in Friday’s bus accident in Nepal.
At least 27 Indian pilgrims, who were in the Himalayan nation for a tour, were killed on Friday when their bus veered off the highway and plunged into the fast-flowing river in the Himalayan nation’s Tanahun district.
“The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Tanahun district, Nepal. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
‘Horrifying sight’
An eyewitness who arrived at the scene of the bus crash described the aftermath as deeply distressing after the bus carrying nearly 41 Indian pilgrims plunged into the Marsyangdi River. “We arrived within 5 to 7 minutes of the incident and were met with a horrifying sight,” tourism entrepreneur Arjun Khanal was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post .
“The bus had plunged around 150 meters down the road, and passengers were desperately screaming for help. We saw three injured individuals attempting to escape through the bus windows,” Khanal said. “People were crying out for help, but the effort to bring them up to the road was extremely difficult,” he added.
‘Deeply saddened’
In a post on X, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed grief over the loss of lives. He also extended his sympathies to PM Modi. “Deeply saddened by the tragic bus accident in Abu Khaireni, Tanahun, which claimed the lives of 27 Indian citizens travelling from Pokhara to Kathmandu. My heartfelt tributes to the victims and condolences to their families, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.
All 41 passengers and two crew members were Indian and had been traveling from the tourist city of Pokhara to Kathmandu. Rescuers recovered several people from the swollen waters of the Marsyangdi River in the Tanahun district, about 118 km from the country’s capital.
‘Saddened by the loss’
On Friday, PM Modi expressed grief at the loss of lives in a road accident in Nepal. Modi said on X, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road mishap in Tanahun district, Nepal. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
The post-mortem of the Indian pilgrims who were killed in the tragic bus accident was underway in a hospital in the Bagmati province on Saturday, ahead of the transportation of the bodies to Maharashtra. The post-mortem of bodies is being held in the Bharatpur Hospital in the Chitwan district of the Bagmati province, the MyRepublica news portal reported.
Air Force plane
The bus carrying mostly Indian tourists hailing from Maharashtra plunged into a gorge of the Marsyangdi river in the Ambukhereni area of Tanahun district of Nepal on Friday. The passengers mostly from Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, were plying from the mountainous tourist resort of Pokhara to the Nepal capital Kathmandu when it fell 150 feet into a river valley.
An Indian Air Force plane will transport the bodies to Nashik today, a Maharastra state government release said on Friday in Mumbai. The Indian government flew Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse to Kathmandu on Saturday to meet the passengers injured in Nepal’s bus accident that occurred on Friday and oversee the repatriation of the remains of those killed in the mishap.
Given the logistical challenges of transporting multiple bodies and injured individuals on a commercial flight, the Maharashtra government has requested the Indian Air Force (IAF) to arrange a special flight. This flight is likely to fly from Gorakhpur to Nashik which is the nearest airport to Jalgaon – and the state government will bear all the expenses for this operation.

Harris and Walz heading to Georgia as campaign seeks to build on convention momentum
Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour of southern Georgia next week, the duo’s first time campaigning in the state together and, as of now, their first public event after the Democratic convention in Chicago.
The pair will be using the momentum from the party’s convention to drive them into the last couple months of the general election. In addition to the bus tour, Harris and Walz are expected to tape their first joint interview next week and attend multiple fundraisers, most likely to take place in New York, California, Florida and Georgia, according to two sources familiar with the planning.
Following the tour, Harris will headline a solo rally in Savannah, Georgia. The trip will mark Harris’ seventh visit to the state this year and her second since launching her presidential campaign last month.
“Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large population of Black voters and working class families,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a press release announcing the bus tour.
Harris and Walz’s visit will come as the Republican ticket ramps up its campaigning in the state. Vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio held a campaign event in Valdosta on Thursday, following a rally by former President Donald Trump in Atlanta earlier this month. Republicans, too, have sought to capitalize on polling that suggests the party could pick up a larger share of Black and Latino voters this election cycle.
The southern Georgia bus tour is expected to echo the campaign’s bus tour of western Pennsylvania earlier this month, which included stops at a local campaign field office, a firehouse and a high school football practice.
Harris and Walz initially planned to visit Savannah during the campaign’s battleground state tour earlier this month, but they had to postpone the event due to Tropical Storm Debby.
Though it’s unclear exactly where Harris and Walz will go, southern Georgia is home to some of the state’s largest Black populations, including Dougherty County, which has the second-highest proportion of Black residents in the state. The campaign has opened field offices in the predominantly Black cities of Albany and Valdosta.
“The south Georgia region is a priority for the campaign: We have nearly 50 full time staff across seven offices in the area, including Valdosta. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said.
Ranada Robinson, research director for the New Georgia Project Fund, said appealing to Black voters in both rural and urban areas will be critical to Harris’ success in the state, as it was to Biden’s victory in 2020.
“Black voters are the key to winning Georgia. Of course Black Georgians can’t do it alone, but we are absolutely the reason 2020 turned out the way it did,” she said. “Black voters had historical turnout, and it has to happen again for there to be victory in Georgia.”
Earlier this month, Harris held the second rally of her presidential campaign in Atlanta, an event that featured Megan Thee Stallion; the campaign said it attracted more than 10,000 people.
It then launched a mobilization effort in the state and now touts more than 35,000 volunteers, 174 staffers and 24 coordinated campaign offices sprawled across Georgia. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”
The Harris-Walz campaign said it has recruited nearly 400,000 news volunteers nationally since Harris launched her presidential bid last month. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”
Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon identified Georgia as one of the campaign’s top targets, noting shifting demographics that could aid the vice president in expanding support from 2020.
“The Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” Dillon wrote in a recent memo.
Harris and Walz are also expected to barnstorm battleground states around Labor Day, before Harris focuses more of her time on debate prep ahead of her September matchup with Trump.
A Trump adviser said the campaign expects Harris will get a “bump” coming off the convention but compared it to a “sugar high,” saying they didn’t believe it will change the overall state of the race.
CORRECTION: (Aug. 25, 2024 2:05 p.m. ET) A previous version of this article misstated the number of volunteers the Harris campaign has in Georgia. It has 400,000 nationally, not in the state of Georgia.
