If you are a part-time student and believe that you qualify for an 18+ Student Oyster Photocard, please contact the Student Funding Office by emailing [email protected] providing your name, King's ID and course details, and let us know which criteria you believe you qualify under.

How do I apply?

Applying online is the only way to receive your discount entitlement. Your 18+ Student Oyster photocard will be sent to the address you provide and should arrive within five to seven days after approval from King's (this is carried out by the Student Funding Office ).

Please note that when applying you will need:

  • A colour, digital photo
  • Your student, enrolment ID from your school, college or university
  • A London address
  • A valid debit or credit card to pay the £20 administration fee
  • An active, valid email address

When applying for your TfL 18+ oyster card please ensure you search for 'Kings College London' and select the entry with address ‘Kings College London, James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57 Waterloo Road.’

If selecting the institution from a list, make sure to select Kings College London, and not the NHS Foundation Trust or “Kings London.”

If you don’t apply to the correct 'Kings College London' your application will be rejected by another institution and you may have to make a new application and incur the £20 administration fee again.

When entering your Course Details (Step 3) you will be asked to provide your Student enrolment (ID) Number. This is the 7 or 8 digit number on your student card. Please do not enter the ID that begins with a “K” as this may cause delays in approving your application.

Can I get discount on National Rail?

Students can apply for a National Rail 16-25 Railcard (formerly known as a Young Persons Railcard). It costs £30 and saves students 1/3 on rail fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. For information about eligibility and how to apply visit the 16-25 Railcard website .

Mature students (over the age of 26 and in full-time education) can also apply.

Changes in Registration

Under these circumstances we are required to report this to TfL and your card will be stopped.

If you have interrupted your studies, then you will need to reapply for a new 18+ Student Oyster Photocard when you have re-enrolled as a full-time student.

Medical students intercalating externally will be considered as interrupted at King's, and will need to apply for a new 18+ Student Oyster photocard with the institution where they are completing their intercalated degree, once their card at King's is stopped.

Student Oyster Card Main Image

Applying And Using Your Student Oyster Photocard

If you are a newcomer to London, one of the initial things that will catch your attention is the city's convenient and well-organised public transportation system. Transport for London (TfL) has established an impressive network that ensures easy access to any destination you wish to reach. As a student, the 18+ Student Oyster Photocard is a valuable tool to reduce your travel expenses and make exploring the city both enjoyable and budget-friendly.

What is the 18+ Student Oyster Photocard?

The 18+ Student Oyster Photocard is exclusively tailored for students residing and studying in London. It functions as a card that you simply tap-in and tap-out when using the tube, and tap-in only when boarding a bus to make payment for your travel. Unlike the regular Oyster Card, this card features your printed picture and provides you with discounted fares.

How to apply

To obtain the student photocard, follow these simple steps:

  • Complete your Sterling College London enrolment.
  • Apply online through the TfL website .
  • Pay the £20 fee for the card, which will remain valid until the end of your course.
  • Provide necessary information, such as your student enrolment ID, London address, and a digital photograph. Ensure that you follow the photograph guidelines before uploading.
  • The university will review and approve your application.
  • TfL will then send your card to the specified address. You'll receive email or text updates regarding your application.
  • On average, applicants receive their cards within two weeks of applying.

Following these steps will grant you access to the 18+ Student Oyster Photocard, offering you convenient and discounted travel options throughout your time as a student in London.

Why do I need it?

The student photocard offers valuable savings of 30% on adult-rate Travelcards , Bus and Tram Passes . Once you obtain the card, you can purchase discounted travelcards and bus passes conveniently through the TfL website . Additionally, you can load pay-as-you-go credit onto the photocard, although no discounts apply to this option.

For instance, the standard fare for a 7-day bus pass is £23.30, but with the student photocard's 30% discount, the price reduces to £16.30. Similarly, for the tube, a 7-day travelcard covering Zones 1-2 typically costs £38.40, whereas the discounted travelcard using the student photocard costs £26.80.

Another perk of the student photocard is the ability to add your 16-25 Railcard to it. This integration allows you to save 34% on pay as you go fares during off-peak hours. You can easily apply for the 16-25 Railcard online, which costs £30 per year, and if you fall between the ages of 16-25 or are a mature student, you qualify for eligibility. After receiving your Railcard, you can link it to your student photocard at any tube station by requesting assistance from a staff member.

Choosing the right type

The choice between travelcards and pay-as-you-go fares depends on your frequency of using public transport. To make the best decision, compare the prices of the discounted travelcards and pay-as-you-go fares based on the number of journeys you expect to make.

If you anticipate taking more than two rides each day for the entire week (totaling 14 rides or more), the discounted travelcard linked to your student photocard will be the more cost-effective option for you. In this case, the savings you gain from the discounted travelcard will outweigh the cost of individual pay-as-you-go fares.

However, if you estimate taking fewer rides per week, pay-as-you-go fares will likely be more economical. In your case, where you usually take between 6 to 8 rides a week, pay-as-you-go fares would be the better choice since it's less than the 14 rides required for the discounted travelcard to become more advantageous.

Additionally, purchasing 7-day travelcards instead of monthly ones can save you money, especially during months when you won't use public transport as frequently. This way, you can optimize your savings based on your travel patterns throughout the year.

Is the 18+ Student Oyster card worth it?

Picture of Unifresher

The student oyster card 18+ is a discounted travel card that is available to full-time students over the age of 18 who are studying in London. This card is a great option for students who need to travel frequently in London, whether that’s by bus, tram or the underground. Find out more about the 18+ Student Oyster card, including information on the cost of the card, how to obtain it, and how to use it to save money on your daily commute. Whether you’re a new student just arriving in London or a returning student looking to save money on your transportation costs, the student oyster card 18+ is a valuable resource for any student studying in London.

How much can you save with an 18+ Student Oyster card?

The card provides a 30% discount on adult-rate Travel cards and Bus & Tram Passes for the academic year. That’s almost a third of all public transportation, which – given the price of getting around London – could save you a lot!

How much does an 18+ Student Oyster card cost?

The cost of the card is £20 for administration fees. The card can be valid for up to three years while you’re studying, which works out at £6.66 a year.

Is an 18+ Student Oyster card worth it?

Is an 18+ Student Oyster card worth it?

This is generally dependent on how much you travel, but at only £20 for three years, most agree the student oyster is worth it. The benefits of a student oyster include 30% off travel cards, which include 7 day travel cards, monthly travel cards and yearly travel cards. It also gives you discounted bus and tram passes.

Importantly, the student oyster will only give you 30% discount on travel cards and seasonal passes, not pay as you go! So if you’re the type of student who doesn’t like to plan in advance, the student oyster may not be as beneficial!

Limitations and restrictions of the Student Oyster Card

The 18+ Student Oyster Card, while offering significant benefits, does come with certain limitations. Firstly, the card’s discounts are primarily applicable to Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes, offering a 30% reduction in costs. However, it’s important to note that these discounts do not extend to Pay As You Go (PAYG) fares. This means that if you’re using your Oyster card on a PAYG basis, you’ll be paying the standard adult rate, just like with a regular Oyster card.

Comparing PAYG and travelcards for students

When deciding between PAYG and Travelcard options, your travel patterns play a crucial role. PAYG is more suitable for students with irregular travel schedules or those who travel infrequently. It offers flexibility as you only pay for the journeys you make. On the other hand, Travelcards are more cost-effective for students who travel frequently, especially if their daily commute covers multiple zones. The 30% discount on Travelcards can lead to substantial savings over time. Therefore, if your daily commute involves extensive use of the transport network, opting for a Travelcard with the Student Oyster Card would be more beneficial financially.

Alternatives to the 18+ Student Oyster Card

For students in London and other cities, there are several travel discount options besides the 18+ Student Oyster Card. Many cities offer their own versions of student travel cards, providing similar benefits. For instance, in cities like Vancouver, student fares are often discounted, and some universities include a free transit pass as part of the tuition, encouraging the use of public transportation.

In addition to specific student travel cards, there are also general travel deals and offers that students can take advantage of. Websites and platforms dedicated to student deals often list various discounts on travel, holidays, and transport, which can include savings on train tickets and flights. Furthermore, some cities offer free bus services or discounted tickets to help students make their money go further.

It’s also worth exploring options like railcards, which can offer significant savings on train travel. While these might not be exclusive to students, they can still provide substantial discounts that are beneficial for student budgets. Each city or region may have its own unique set of travel discounts and schemes, so it’s advisable for students to research and compare these options to find the best fit for their travel needs and financial circumstances.

Overall, the 18+ Student Oyster can be a great way to save money on daily commuting in London. However, you’ll most likely reap the benefits if you plan ahead and buy weekly, monthly or yearly passes. Find out how to apply in our step-by-step guide . Now that you’ve got travel sorted, take a look at our tips on managing out the rest of your student finance while living in London .

The application process for a Student Oyster Card

Now that you understand the benefits and eligibility criteria, let's delve into the application process for a Student Oyster Card.

Preparing your application for a Student Oyster Card

Before you start the application process, make sure you have the necessary documents and information at hand. You will need:

  • Proof of enrolment in an eligible course, such as a student ID card or a letter from your educational institution.
  • A recent photograph of yourself, which meets the TfL's guidelines for passport-style photos.
  • Proof of your identity and age, such as a passport or a national identity card.

Having these documents ready will streamline your application process and ensure that you have all the necessary information to complete the form.

It is essential to ensure that the documents you provide are valid and up to date to avoid any delays in the application process. For proof of enrolment, make sure the document clearly states your name, the course you are enrolled in, and the start and end dates of the course. This information is crucial for TfL to verify your eligibility for a Student Oyster Card.

Submitting your application for a Student Oyster Card

Once you have gathered all the required documents and information, you can submit your application online through the TfL website. The online application process is straightforward and should only take a few minutes to complete.

After submitting your application, TfL will review your information and documentation. If everything is in order, you will receive your Student Oyster Card by post within a few days.

Costs associated with a Student Oyster Card

Now let's explore the costs associated with having a Student Oyster Card.

London, with its intricate web of underground tunnels and iconic double-decker buses, is a city that thrives on its public transportation system. For students navigating the bustling streets of the capital, a Student Oyster Card can be a valuable companion, offering discounted travel and convenient access to all corners of the city.

Initial cost of a Student Oyster Card

There is a small fee to apply for a Student Oyster Card. As of [current year], the cost is [insert current cost]. This fee covers the production and delivery of your card.

Obtaining a Student Oyster Card is a straightforward process that can be completed online or at various Transport for London (TfL) outlets across the city. The card, personalised with your name and photo, not only serves as a ticket for travel but also as a symbol of student life in London.

While there is an initial cost, the long-term savings on public transportation fares make the Student Oyster Card a worthwhile investment for students in London.

Ongoing costs of a Student Oyster Card

Once you have the card, there are no monthly or annual fees associated with maintaining a Student Oyster Card. However, you will need to top up the card with credit to pay for your travel.

Keep in mind that the cost of travel will vary depending on factors such as the zones you travel in and whether you travel during peak or off-peak hours. TfL provides clear information about fares and how to top up your card on their website.

Using your Student Oyster Card

What is an Oyster card?

Many people living in London use Oyster cards to pay for public transport. An Oyster card is a plastic smartcard which can hold pay-as-you-go credit (money), Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes. You can load money on to your Oyster card (known as ‘topping up’) at any tube or London Overground station, as well as in any shop where you see the blue Oyster card sign. You can use an Oyster card to travel on bus, tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Emirates Air Line, River Bus services and most National Rail services in London.

Most people living in London will have an Oyster card, as Oyster fares are substantially cheaper than buying paper tickets for single journeys.

You can find out the cost of single journeys using Travel for London’s Single Fare Finder tool.

Where can I get an Oyster card?

You can get an Oyster card from any Tube, London Overground and TfL Rail stations, as well as some DLR and National Rail stations.

How much does it cost?

You have to pay a £7 fee for an Oyster card, and if you bought yours on or after 4 September 2022, it is non-refundable.

What is an 18+ Oyster card?

An 18+ Student Oyster photocard works in the same way as a standard Oyster card, but looks slightly different as it includes a photo of you. It also entitles you to some extra discounts.

What discounts can I get with an 18+ Oyster card?

If you have an 18+ Student Oyster photocard, you can get 30% off the price of adult-rate Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets.

A Travelcard season ticket gives you unlimited travel for a week, a month or a year. The cost of a Travelcard will vary depending on the length of time it is valid for and which zones you are travelling between. For example, if you are travelling only in zone 1 or between zones 1 and 2, a weekly Travelcard will cost £33. Travelling in zones 1-3 will cost £38.70. You can find a full list of rates on the TfL website .

Am I eligible?

If you're 18 or over, live at a London address during term time and in full-time education, or on a mandatory work placement in London, you may be eligible for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard.

Please find the eligibility criteria outlined on the TFL web page.

You must have fully enrolled at UCL before you will be eligible . If you apply before you have fully enrolled, you risk your application being rejected and losing your application fee. If you are a part-time student, your application will be rejected unless you meet the TfL criteria, which can be found on the TfL website. You must use your correct programme end date from Portico when you apply otherwise your application will be rejected.

How do I apply?

In order to apply online for your photocard you will need to provide:

  • an active email address
  • your UCL student number (SN on the front of your UCL ID card )
  • London borough  address
  • Digital photo  which must be a .jpg, .bmp or .gif file and less than 6MB
  • Your correct programme of study end date from Portico

You will be required to pay an administration fee of £20 using a credit or debit card. Due to the £20 fee of registering for an 18+ Oyster card, it is worth considering whether or not it will be worth the money for you. Please make sure to select the 'University Course' option and not the 'Work Placement' option, as you may lose the administration fee if you choose the incorrect option.

If you will only be making a few journeys on public transport, you may not need to use a Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass season ticket and therefore would not need an 18+ photocard. You may be better off using pay as you go at the adult rate and not paying the £20 fee. For example, to hit a weekly Travelcard in zones 1-2, you would need to make at least fourteen Tube journeys (which would cost £2.40 each within zones 1-2) or 22 bus journeys (which always cost £1.50, no matter how far you travel) to make it worth buying a £33 weekly Travelcard, and thus benefit from the discount.

You can use TfL’s Single Fare Finder to work out how much single tube journeys would cost you for different zones, and whether or not you are likely to make enough journeys for it to be worth buying a weekly, monthly or yearly Travelcard. If you are buying multiple Travelcards, it may be worth paying the £20 fee to register for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard to benefit from the 30% discount.

Please note:  You must enter your institution name correctly in order for the application to be successful - if the form does not automatically select 'UCL' when you type it in, please click the link to view a list of all eligible institutions and pick 'UCL' from the list. If you extend your period of study, you will need to apply for a new Oyster photocard to cover the additional time. UCL is not responsible for any inaccuracies in your Oyster photocard end date. If your status changes and you are no longer eligible for the 18+ Oyster photocard (because you leave UCL, interrupt your studies or change to part-time status) we are required to report this to TfL.

You should be aware that once your Oyster has a discount attached to it, you can no longer share it with or lend it to other people as it is only valid with the associated discount card.

Apply for an 18+ Student Oyster Card

Checking your application status

Information on how to check your application status can be found on the TfL's 18+ Student Oyster photocard web page

If you have a query about the status of your application for the 18+ Oyster card, you may log an enquiry via askUCL. Please quote your application reference number.

16+ Zip Oyster Card

UCL can sign and stamp a 16+ Oyster card application for eligible students.

To be eligible for free bus and tram travel, the applicant must be aged 16 or 17 on 31st August and be living in a London borough. If the applicant is 18, UCL does not sign the form as a Higher Education Institute (level 6).

Full details of how to apply for the 16+ Oyster card can be on the Transport for London website .

What are railcards?

The 16-25 and 26-30 railcards are plastic cards or downloadable as an app that gives you 1/3 off rail fairs. Many home students consider buying a 16-25 or 26-30 railcard if they are intending to travel by train fairly often, for example, to visit family.

For more information visit the 16-25 railcard web page.

For more information, visit the 26-30 railcard website.

Where can I buy one, and how much do they cost?

You should only buy the 16-25 or 26-30 railcards from the official railcard website . They cost £30 for one year.

Linking your railcard and your Oyster card

You can also add the discount to your standard Oyster card or your 18+ Student Oyster photocard to get a 34% discount on single off-peak pay-as-you-go fares on London Underground and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) services.

Peak times are from 06:30 to 9:29 and from 16:00 to 18:59 Monday to Friday. During peak travel times, some journeys cost slightly more. Your railcard will not get you a discount during these times.

For example: a single Tube journey within zone 1 or between zones 1 and 2 outside the hours of 06:30 to 9:29 and from 16:00 to 18:59 or on a weekend would cost £2.40. With a railcard linked to your Oyster card, the same journey would cost £1.59. Journeys made within those hours (during peak times) would cost £2.90, regardless of whether or not your Oyster and railcard are linked.

You can use TfL's Single Fare Finder to work out how much single Tube journeys would cost without being linked to a railcard.

Due to the £30 fee when you buy a railcard, it is worth considering whether or not you would use the discounts it gives you often enough for it to be worth the money.

How do I link my railcard and my Oyster card?

To link your Oyster card and railcard, you need to take your Oyster card and your railcard to an Underground station, Overground ticket office or some National Rail ticket offices and ask the clerk to add your discount entitlement to your Oyster card. It will be valid until the expiry of the railcard.

Young person coach cards are available for all people aged 16 - 26 or full-time students over the age of 26. They give you a third (33.3%) off all Standard and Fully Flexible coach fares with the National Express.

Find out more information on the National Express website .

July 29th, 2019, how to save money on london transport.

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

Most of us get around London using the efficient Transport for London (TfL) network. But, as most of you may be aware of, the TfL has a lot to offer for students living in London in order to make travel in London more affordable.

I am going to mention the top tips that could help you save a handsome amount over the course of time you spend in London. There might be some of you simply avoiding public transport simply for its high costs, but there are plenty of ways to get around and reduce the travel costs.

The 18+ Student Oyster Photocard:

The 18+ Student Oyster Photocard works just like a standard Oyster card, in that, but it also includes a photo of you and it entitles us to some extra discounts when travelling on the TfL network.

It costs £25 and expires when the course ends. You can apply online after you have completed the enrolment process with the university. This certainly works for those who might be using Travelcards on standard adult fares paying approximately £33 each week. The Student Photocard gives a 30% off the standard adult rates for the Travelcards.

The 16-25 Railcard or 25-30 Railcard:

The National Railcard offers a 1/3 off the rail fares for anyone aged between 16-25 or 26-30 on any train service all around the UK for one year. This card costs £30 per person and can be bought online or at any National Rail station. All you need is a valid age proof and a photograph of yourself! The 33% railcard discount is also applicable on Virgin Train services.

Linking the Railcard and the Student Oyster card :

You can reap more benefits from the Railcard when you link it with your 18+ Student Oyster. Linking the two cards gives  you 33% discount off any off-peak travel (peak hours are from 06:30 to 09:29 and from 16:00 to 18:59) on the TfL network, so instead of paying £2.40 (fare for Zone 1-2), the fare will be reduced to £1.59, which is almost the same fare as a single ride on the bus.

If you want to travel and see around all of the UK and use public transport in London for your everyday travel, make sure you do this so save a handsome amount of money.

PAYG or Travelcards:

The next thing is the constant debate between whether you should buy a Travelcard or just use Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) on the Oyster Card. Now, this is a very difficult question. Here is the catch! If you take more than two rides on any transport service offered by the TfL each day or more than 14 rides in a week, the Travelcard would certainly prove to be cheaper as a weekly Zone 1-2 Travelcard on the 18+ Student Oyster costs just over £23. Else, simply use the PAYG. Why I suggest using the weekly and not the monthly Travelcard is because you might have a few days in the month when you travel out of the city and not use the TfL services at all and in that scenario, you will simply lose out on the money that you pay.

Group Save Offers :

Another discount that is offered on the National Rail services is a group save discount that entitles you to a 34% discount when you travel in a group of three or more. This could be useful if you don’t intend to get the 16-25 Railcard. However, the Groupsave discount is not applicable on the Virgin Train service.

Refunds from TfL:

Lastly, it is good to be aware that the TfL refunds money that is charged incorrectly on the Oyster, and also in the case of any delays on the TfL service. For instance, if your journey is delayed by more than 15 minutes for a reason under the control of TfL, you can apply for a refund by writing to them. Also, there might be instances when the Oyster machines deduct the incorrect amount from your Oyster, in such cases, you can report it to a member of staff and get a refund on your card, provided your ride was in the last 28 days.

Hope these tips are of great help in saving you money as you get around and explore London!

Thank you Aarushi for this informative piece! To add, having bought a 3-year 18+ oyster card I would suggest fellow students to carefully consider the actual need of getting a photo card. While you do get 30% off travel cards, often times it’s cheaper to PAYG (with off-peak rail card discounts and daily cap). Also it’s expensive to replace a photocard if it’s lost or damaged, and you could replace a regular oyster card FOR FREE (if registered online). Once again it’s been a pleasure to read all your blogs over the year. Hope you’re having a great summer!

Hi Beebo. Thank you for your comments. I am glad you found the post informative. Just wanted to put a clarification to avoid confusions. An 18+ Oyster card doesn’t just give 30% off travel cards, it also gives 30% off all off-peak time travels on PAYG (pay as you go) (Off peak timings are : 9.30am to 4pm, 7pm to 6.30am). The photo card with the rail card also gives a lower daily cap. Having recently lost my photocard I can confirm to you that it is replaced for FREE. They charge you £10 and this £10 is credited into your photocard. It comes loaded with the £10. So essentially you don’t pay anything extra. I am glad you enjoyed my blogs over the year, it means a lot to me. Have a great summer!

Hello, Does the 18+ student oyster photocard cost £25 per week, per month, or annually? Also, does one use the photocard to purchase discounted tickets everytime they use the Tube or is the photocard the ticket itself? Because then could you give an idea of how much a student would spend on Tube travel monthly if they’re using it twice daily? Thanks!

travel for london student oyster card

What travelcards & discounts can I get on public transport?

Studying in London is a unique experience compared to other universities. Whilst the capital offers an unrivalled amount of things to see and do, it can at first be challenge. Although there are a few discount options available to help reduce costs, understanding which one is best and most suitable can in itself be a confusing process. Most students are aware of the 18+ Student Oyster Photocard, but there are also other, lesser known discount railcards. So, which one is the best? The simple answer is that it depends entirely on you - how frequently you use the transport network, and during which times.

Important to know:   If you’re travelling on public transport in London, check the  Transport for London (TfL) to see which services are running, plus y ou can sign up for email updates from TfL.

What is the 18+ Student Oyster card and how can I get one?

The 18+ Oyster entitles you to 30% off travelcards and Bus and Tram season tickets. It is available to full-time King’s students living in the Greater London area, and you apply online using the TfL website at a cost of £20. You’ll simply need your course dates, the student number on your ID card, as well as a photo and your email. Applying a discounted travelcard to an Oyster gives peace of mind that you won’t spend any more than the amount you’ve already paid. However, bear in mind there is no discount to pay-as-you-go fares with an 18+ Oyster. You could be overpaying for a travelcard if you aren’t using the tube or buses frequently, so it is worth considering the other option before handing over £20 to TfL. We recommend reading the detail of what the benefits are, as well as the eligibility criteria for this travel card at TfL 18+ Student Oyster photocard . If you are eligible and wish to apply, please refer to our specific guidance when applying as a King’s student in the guidance below. Important to know: If you take a break from your studies, you won’t be eligible for the 18+ Oyster card for the duration of your interruption.

How do I apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard?

Full-time students can apply for a Transport for London (TfL) 18+ Student Oyster photocard, which provides a 30% discount on travel in London. You can  apply online  via the dedicated TfL site and will need a digital photograph and a credit/debit card. You can check your eligibility at  TfL 18+ Student Oyster which also includes important information about how and when applications will be validated. Steps when making your application

When you make your application, please ensure that you select King’s College London as the institution: ‘King's College London, James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57 Waterloo Road.’ (institution code 0403).

If selecting the institution from a list, make sure to select King's College London, and not the NHS Foundation Trust or “King's London.”

If you don’t apply to the correct 'King's College London' your application will be rejected by another institution and you may have to make a new application and incur the £20 administration fee again.

When entering your Course Details (Step 3) you will be asked to provide your Student enrolment (ID) Number. This is the 7 or 8 digit number on your student card. Please do not enter the ID that begins with a “K” as this may cause delays in approving your application.

Important to know:

Most part-time students and students on a break/interruption of study are not eligible for the 18+ Student Oyster photocard. Please refer to the more detailed guidance at  TfL 18+ Student Oyster and to our guidance on interruptions for undergraduate students or postgraduate taught students .

The King's Student Funding Office confirms whether applicants are registered as full-time for TfL.

Applications  cannot be approved until the first day of term , so the Student Funding Office will begin approving application from then onwards.

How long will it take for my Oyster application to be approved? The Student Funding Office approves all Oyster card applications directly with TfL. It takes a couple of weeks for this to come through at the start of term, but these are approved as soon as possible.

If you’re over 25 , you are best to apply for the  26-30 Railcard .

Always carry your 26-30 Railcard when buying tickets and travelling.

I’m a mature or part-time student; am I eligible for this railcard?

Both the 26-30 and the 16-25 railcards are dependent on your age, so you don’t have to be a student to apply. Anyone under 31 is covered by either one of the railcards without needing any further approval – you can apply directly through the website. The main difference comes if you are studying and over 30; for this you’re best to refer to details for the 16-25 railcard.

Comparing the 18+ Student Oyster card and 16-25 Railcard: which student travel card is right for me?

If you are not using public transport frequently but instead walking or cycling to university and only using the tube occasionally, the 18+ Oyster may not be worthwhile. To check fares for travel across the different zones using the various payment methods, refer to TfL 18+ Student fares . Unless you travel very regularly on pay-as-you-go fares, a 16-25 Railcard may be more appropriate to save money on off-peak fares, when using the tube or city trains to see friends or explore London for leisure. Even if you use the tube frequently on one day, fares automatically cap at the zone rate, ensuring you can’t spend any more than this in one day. Caps can increase year on year, so if you think you might stick to standard pay-as-you-go, we recommend checking TfL’s Pay as you go caps . The 16-25 railcard offers an additional ⅓ off daily caps when using the tube off-peak bringing the cap down further. On the other hand, if you are regularly using transport to travel into university and at peak times, the discounted travelcard allows for unlimited journeys on a weekly or monthly basis, and so may make the 18+ Oyster better value. If you do opt for the 18+ Oyster, you can still apply a 16-25 railcard discount allowing for the best of both worlds. You can opt for a discounted travelcard in the weeks you use public transport frequently whilst allowing for a pay-as-you-go discount when not using transport frequently outside of term time. If you are living in Zone 2, you may opt for a Zone 1-2 weekly travelcard to get to university, but use the 16-25 Railcard when you make journeys to Zone 3 and beyond to explore areas outside of Central London. A combination of the two allows for maximum flexibility. In the end, it depends entirely on your personal use. It’s a good idea to check how much you are using public transport to see if the total regularly exceeds or is below the cost of a travelcard for your zone. To work out what you’re spending your money on to help you budget better, refer to our guide on managing your money .

Additional support for students with disabilities

I’m a disabled student living in London, can I apply for a freedom pass?

If you live in a London borough and meet the eligibility criteria, you may be able to apply for a Disabled Persons Freedom Pass, which can provide free access to public transport across the Transport for London network. For further guidance on how to submit an application, visit the London Councils webpage .

Step 1: Make sure you're using either an Oyster or Contactless Card

Paper ticket fares are incredibly expensive in London, and nowadays often unnecessary when so many credit and debit cards have the contactless feature.

You will know if your debit card is contactless depending on whether it has the contactless symbol. Though contactless removes the need to top-up, discounts cannot be applied and it can be more difficult to keep track of spending.

Adult Oyster cards are available at ticket machines at any Tube station for a £5. Even if you opt to apply for an 18+ Oyster, it is worth paying this while you wait for your 18+ Oyster, because it can sometimes take a couple of weeks for the university to approve this for you.

Step 2: How much are you using transport and when?

To keep track of usage, make sure to register your Oyster Card online following the instructions on the TfL website. Once you have done this, you can view journey history and see daily expenditure.

You may wish to set up a Contactless and Oyster account which also has a matching app , which allows you to check your journey history, easily top-up credit and you’ll get notifications when your credit runs low.

Keeping track of your journeys and your spending means you can total the weekly and estimate the monthly and annual costs, and compare this with the cost of discounted travelcards for each zone. For details on fares across a range of transport types in the capital visit TfL Find fares .

Step 3: Apply for the discount cards

If you find you are exceeding the cost of a travelcard via pay-as-you-go fares it is likely that an 18+ Oyster is a sound investment and can be applied for online. Please refer to our guidance in How do I apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard?

If you are only occasionally using public transport and therefore coming in below the cost of a travelcard, or simply want both discounts and the option of discounts on trains throughout the UK, you can apply for the 16-25 Railcard online .

Buses are almost always cheaper than the tube and the Hopper Fare gives you unlimited journeys, made within 1 hour of touching in.

Remember to tap in and tap out at all stations even if there are no barriers. Forgetting to tap both in and out on the tube will lead to a penalty fare .

King’s Student Funding Office confirm student attendance to TfL for applications to be approved. September and October are very busy periods as many students apply for the 18+ Oyster card, so bear in mind you may need to wait; please allow at least 3 weeks for processing.

How can I travel around London on a budget?

You can simply hire a cycle by going to your nearest docking station terminal with a debit or credit card. Be sure to take your card with you; while contactless cards are accepted, but contactless devices including phones and smartwatches, are not .

You can also download the free Santander Cycles app  and pay for the hire using the app instead. For up to 30 minutes, you can ride an unlimited journey for just £2. Every additional 30 minutes will be charged at £2. Remember to return your cycle within 24 hours to your nearest docking station terminal. Otherwise, you may be charged.
