India is set to get multiple tourism projects worth INR 14 billion ($169 million). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating these projects on Thursday during his visit to Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The projects aim to boost the domestic tourism industry in the country with the help of Swadesh Darshan and Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) schemes.

Improving tourism infrastructure: The Government of India has launched schemes such as Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD with the aim to improve the tourism infrastructure in the country. The vision is to offer tourists and pilgrims world-class amenities and facilities at pilgrimage and tourist destinations across the country. Under these schemes, the Centre provides financial assistance to states, union territories, as well as central agencies to develop such locations.

Projects to be inaugurated: Among the projects that are set to be inaugurated on Thursday is the ‘Integrated Development of Hazratbal Shrine’ in Srinagar. This would lead to improvement of ghats around the shrine as well as construction of a Sufi interpretation center. Apart from this, the project to develop Jogulamba Devi Temple in Telangana will also be inaugurated.

Air India-Vistara Merger Gets Singapore Green Light

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) has approved the Air India and Vistara merger. The intention for merger between the two full-service airlines was announced by Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons in November 2022, soon after Tata acquired Air India.

To bring the merger into effect, Singapore Airlines acquired a 25.1% stake in the former national carrier as well. Post the merger, Vistara would merge into Air India, under which brand the carrier would then operate.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) had given its approval to the merger last year in September. The competition watchdog in Singapore, however, expressed concerns regarding the significant market share held by the merging parties in four sectors between Singapore and India. The involved parties proposed measures to address these concerns. The Singapore competition authority has given its approval to the merger on the condition that these proposed measures continue to be upheld by Vistara and Air India.

Domestic Air Passenger Traffic Set to Surpass Pre-Covid Levels

The domestic air passenger traffic in the 2023-24 financial year is likely to surpass the pre-Covid levels. Rating agency ICRA has estimated that the domestic air traffic in 2024 fiscal year will grow by 8-13% at 150-155 million. The agency also maintained a stable outlook on the aviation industry in India.

ICRA is also expecting this momentum of the aviation industry to continue in the next fiscal year, with a similar year-on-year growth. It said that factors such as improved airport infrastructure and increasing demand for both leisure and business travel are contributing to this growth.

IHCL Signs Vivanta Hotel in Ujjain

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has signed a new Vivanta hotel in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The hotel will consist of 130 keys. At the signing, Suma Venkatesh, executive vice president – real estate and development, IHCL, said that the hotel would be the company’s first property in Ujjain.

The signing is in line with the company’s strategy of establishing its presence in significant pilgrimage destinations across India. Prior to this, IHCL had 11 hotels in Madhya Pradesh, of which three were under development.

Park Hotels Reports Best-Ever Quarterly Perfor mance

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels has reported its best-ever quarterly performance. During the quarter, the company witnessed a 15% year-on-year growth in its total income, while its occupancy rate stood at 90%.

During the first nine months of the 2023-24 financial year, the company opened five new hotels. With this, its footprint reached 30 hotels. Over the next five years, Park Hotels is looking to add more than 800 hotels in its portfolio.

Indian Railway Partners With Food Aggregator Swiggy

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with online food aggregator Swiggy as its delivery partner. The partnership aims to leverage Swiggy’s network of restaurants and delivery agents in order to offer passengers pre-booked meals. The service is expected to begin in a week. It will be made available at four stations in the initial phase.

Passengers with a valid ticket would be able to pre-order food from restaurants listed on Swiggy in a particular city and have it delivered to them at their preferred station. IRCTC had also partnered with Swiggy’s competitor Zomato last year as its delivery partner in order to provide passengers with options while pre-booking their food.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Sunday launched 18 projects, completed at a cost of Rs 40.46 crore with an aim at boosting tourism sector in the state.

The projects inaugurated by Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran through videoconferencing, include destination development of Kovalam Phase 1 - Samudra Beach park area and Grove Beach area, Kovalam- at a cost of Rs 9.9 crore and beautification and interlocking of Mulavilakam Footpath at Kovalam at a cost of Rs 52 lakh.

But the government did not allow the pandemic to hamper the implementation of the tourism sector projects.

"The state government has initiated a lot of special projects for revival of the sector, where around 15 lakh people are employed directly and indirectly.

Last year, we got Rs 45,000 crore overall income from the tourism sector, which was an all-time record," he said.

The Minister said that with the inauguration of these 18 tourism projects in seven districts, the government has completed more than 100 projects in the last six months.

Eighty per cent of the 300 tourism projects given administrative sanction after the government came to power have now been completed, he said.

"No other government in the history of Kerala has implemented so many projects in the tourism sector," he added.

Rani George, Principal Secretary, Tourism, said that in the face of the most adverse circumstances, the tourism sector has shown the potential to overcome them all.

"We have set an example for other states through our aggressive and multi-pronged strategy to defy all odds.

The new projects will be a big boost to the locations in the seven districts," she added.

Noting that renovation of MHP sites will make the visit to these spots more attractive, Tourism Director P Bala Kiran said the completed projects also contributed to the basic infrastructure development of the respective locations.

Major projects on anvil to put Lakshadweep on global tourism map

Follow Us :

Kavaratti (Lakshadweep): Lakshadweep islands, India's untapped tourism potential, is all set to get a major makeover with a number of big projects in the pipeline.

As the first step toward bringing more tourists to the islands, the administration is improving the connectivity. Fly19 and Spice Jet have already got the necessary clearances for flight operations to Agatti Island.

A team from Indigo airlines held meetings with the island administration on Wednesday, expressing their interest in starting flights to the island.

According to administration sources, Fly19 will commence its operations by the end of this month.

At present, only Alliance airlines has a single daily flight to Agatti Island, with two trips on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Apart from the flight, there is only one ship doing the service between Kochi and Kavaratti in a week.

As more airlines line up to start operations, the Agatti Island airport is going for a major expansion.

According to an official, construction major L&T has been given the contract for the Rs 4,500 crore expansion works where the runway will be extended to 2,800 meters.

Apart from Agatti, another Greenfield airport will be coming up at Minicoy Island, one which lies next to the Maldives.

For the Agatti airport expansion, private lands will be acquired and also a sizeable chunk of sea floor will be reclaimed.

Once the connectivity part is being worked upon, the next step is to provide more rooms for the visiting tourists.

Tata Group had already proposed three major Taj resorts on three islands - Suheli, Minicoy and Kadmat. Of these, Suheli and Kadmat have already been approved by the district administration.

Taj Hotels and Resorts will be building Lagoon Villas, the first of its kind in India and land villas. Each of these properties will have more than 100 rooms.

"All these projects have been cleared only after a proper Environment Impact Assessment. We have very strict guidelines regarding development projects in the Islands and no project will be cleared without an EIA," K K Idrees Babu, Marine Biologist attached to the Department of Science and Technology, who leads the coastal ecosystem conservation projects in the Islands, told PTI .

He said the rules stipulated under the Integrated Island Management Plan are strictly followed.

He said the lagoon villas in the Maldives were "bad models" to follow and whatever wrong that they had done, which caused considerable damage to the coastal ecosystem in those areas, has been avoided here.

"We have done a proper EIA and the lagoon villas are planned without any such adverse impacts to the environment. Once completed, these villas will be an ideal case study for the rest of the world," Babu said.

UCK Thangal, a senior politician and former Chief Counsellor of Kavaratti, welcomed the tourism projects but said there was no consultation with the people of the island when these projects were planned.

"People have no role in the works going on in the island. The Panchayat governing body in Kavaratti is defunct for more than a year. People who do not know the history or culture of the Islands are now making the decisions," Thangal, who was the closest associate of the 10 time MP of Lakshadweep, PM Sayed, said.

"We are thankful to the Prime Minister for the new tourism projects in the islands as it can bring employment for the youth. But we demand that the public should be consulted and their opinions should be taken into account before finalising any project," the present MP of Lakshadweep, Mohammed Faizal Padippura of NCP, told PTI .

He said the present administrator has even kept the MP out of the loops and has alienated the islanders from the developmental activities in the Islands.

"The administration has been trying to snatch the land of the locals that has been in their possession prior to independence. Now we are fighting that in court," Faizal said.

Generally, the public are welcoming tourism projects but demand that it should be sustainable and restricted tourism activity.

"We have our own culture and we cannot accept any project that can compromise our culture," Hashim, a local fisherman said.

Apart from the major projects mentioned earlier, the Lakshadeep administration is also coming up with a smart city project and two city centres with five star hotels to be built in Agatti and Kavaratti.

Kavaratti will also get a 'Tent City' which will have tent accommodations on the coastline.

These tents can be dismantled and set up in different locations, a senior officer from the administration who does not want to be quoted said.

He said nine of the major tourism projects in the island will have concrete construction and said all structures will be eco- friendly.

He also said certain areas in each of the inhabited islands serve liquor to tourists now and the prohibition policy may be further opened up as tourism gathers momentum in the Islands.

India plans to project the island archipelago as an alternative to the Maldives for tourists.

A diplomatic row erupted between India and the Maldives over the derogatory comments made by some Deputy Ministers of the island nation on social media platforms against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India. Modi visited Lakshadweep in January.

India has also been a consistent and significant contributor to the tourism industry of the Maldives.

The number of Indian visitors was more than 2.4 lakh in 2022 while over 2.11 lakh Indians flew to the Maldives in 2021.

Now that Unlock 3.0 is underway, the question of how travel will be unlocked is still up in the air. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organised a conclave to discuss the Future of Travel and Tourism: What lies ahead', bringing together some of the industry's most renowned experts to provide insights and guidance on the way forward.

The two-day conclave began with an inaugural address by Prahlad Singh Patel, the Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Government of India. Other industry leaders and policymakers participating included Meenakshi Sharma, Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Rupinder Brar, Additional Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Vishal Kumar Dev, Commissioner Cum Secretary, Tourism Department, Sports and Youth Service Department, Government of Odisha, Anbalagan Ponnusamy, Secretary, Tourism, Government of Chhattisgarh, Satpal Maharaj, Tourism Minister of Uttarakhand, Kadakampally Surendran, Tourism Minister of Kerala and Dr Jyotsna Suri, Past President, FICCI & Chairperson, FICCI Tourism Committee & CMD, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group. CNT Editor Divia Thani moderated the opening discussion with an all-star panel comprising Meenakshi Sharma, Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Suman Billa, Director, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO), Technical Cooperation & Silk Road Development, Sujit Banerjee, Secretary General, World Travel & Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII), and Deep Kalra, Founder & Group Executive Chairman, MakeMyTrip. The topic of discussion was: The Future of Travel & Tourism: What lies Ahead.

Highlights of the conversation included:

1 . Safety and assurance must be the first priority

Secluded destinations that have managed to control the spread of the virus will undoubtedly become more popular. A CNT survey conducted in May 2020 found that the Maldives was number one on the list of international destinations people wished to visit, and others like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Australia and New Zealand also ranked highly. But health and safety extends to cleanliness and sanitisation measures across the board. This is crucial not only for domestic tourism but in order for international tourists to return to India for holidays as well. It's not just enough to kill the virus, but it's important to kill the anxiety people have, said Suman Billa of the UNWTO which works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO). India will have to follow strong hygiene and standardised safety protocols from the time a person enters the airport to different touchpoints like restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, etc.

2 . A negative COVID test result should be the new passport

Testing is the key, says Deep Kalra of MakeMyTrip, which was also deeply involved in the creation of the government's Aarogya Setu tracing app. The rate of flight departures in India is currently at 2 . percent, but the load flights are carrying is only 1 . percent, despite the fact that people are clearly tired of being home and wish to get out and travel. People need to feel more confident and safe about not interacting with other passengers who might be infected. Two-way testing making testing mandatory before departure as well as on arrival is one solution. This way passengers will not need to quarantine at the place of arrival. Testing prior to departure is even more crucial, as it will put people much more at ease. While many countries are now testing travellers on arrival, Kalra believes tests before travel is key to mitigating the risk of interacting with a person carrying the virus through the airport or flight. A negative Covid-19 test result should be considered the new passport to travel. In addition, Dipak Deva, Co-Chairman, FICCI Tourism committee, Managing Director, SITA, TCI and Distant Frontiers, noted that this should be mandatory for domestic travel too. In the same way that we are looking to create travel bubbles and corridors between countries, we could create them between Indian states.

3 . A uniform policy across all Indian states must be a priority

While many people want to set out on roadtrips , they are deterred because the norms in different states are unclear, Kalra said. At the moment, states differ dramatically in rules regarding quarantines upon arrival and movement within the state. In order to get tourism going again, states must agree on a uniform and consistent policy regarding quarantines, testing, etc. Once this is agreed upon, this must be clearly communicated to the public. Meenakshi Sharma, Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, agreed with this position, but also reminded the audience that the timing for such action is extremely important. Health and safety must come first, she said.

Interestingly, Kalra also stated that MakeMyTrip is working on new tech features, which will direct people to the places they can visit, the requirements and rules to enter the destination and other such information in real-time. It will almost be like a COVID-1 . travel search engine.

4 . This is an opportunity to make all tourism more responsible and sustainable

The pandemic has brought a wave of consciousness across the globe. People are much more aware of the impact of their lifestyles on the environment. A recent CNT survey found that an overwhelming 6 . percent of respondents were willing to pay higher rates if they knew that their travel providers (accommodation, transport, etc) had eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

The best bakeries in Bandra

It won't be business as usual when the world reopens, said UNWTO's Suman Billa. We will be factoring environmental costs over economic costs. We will look at destinations and establishments moving closer to zero-carbon footprint, zero-waste measures and zero-mile food. We will look for more community-centred and meaningful experiences. People will want to be more responsible and sustainable. The nature of tourism will change. Mass tourism that is high-volume, low-cost will take a backseat, he continued. This sentiment was seconded by Sharma. It will no longer be driven purely by the industry. The interests of the traveller will be different, she said. They are keen to explore new interests and experiences across India, especially those in off-the-beaten-track destinations that are not overcrowded. When the Ministry of Tourism launched Dekho Apna Desh , a series of webinars by tour operators on lesser-known destinations across India, Sharma admits she didn't expect it to go beyond 2 . episodes. However, they have conducted 4 . webinars to date.

5 . Partnerships will be the way forward

WTTCII's Mr Banerjee believes that jumpstarting tourism and building confidence in the minds of travellers will require partnership on multiple levels: states across India must agree on common rules; countries must adopt a united approach to maintain safety while allowing tourism to flourish and bring in revenue; and both the public and private sectors must work together to think innovatively, achieve the best industry standards, and implement the correct policies. We need to think of a more rational and standardised approach for airlines, airports, restaurants, retail sectors to make the travel experience more uniform. The WTTC has proactively made several recommendations and provided guidelines for destinations to follow to keep safety at the core of their actions while allowing tourism to restart.

Banerjee866x854

Sujit Banerjee, Secretary General, World Travel & Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII)

In addition to the above panel, speakers such as Dhruv Shringi, Co-Founder & CEO, Yatra Inc, Rohit Kapoor, CEO, India & South Asia, Oyo Hotels & Homes , celebrity chef Ranveer Brar, Tejasvi Surya, Member of Parliament, and Ajay Jadeja, former captain, Indian cricket team discussed other subjects such as Role of Technology & Innovation to Revive Travel & Tourism & Emergence of New Workforce model. A special session on Ethno Tourism: Exploring the unexplored culture and communities of India was discussed, focusing on Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The FICCI conclave succeeded in bringing together some of travel's most insightful and progressive minds for engaging discussions on the way forward. Now the action must start, too. must start, too.
