A train trip often brings you where everyday roads cannot, whether it’s through untouched Malaysian jungles on the revamped Belmond Eastern & Oriental itineraries relaunching in 2024, or high into the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer. For our 36th annual Readers’ Choice Awards —which capture the travel experiences our readers love best, from hotels and airlines to cruises , islands , and luggage —we called on all of you to rank the best of the best rail journeys out there. 20. Inca Rail, South America

If you’re interested in taking a train to Machu Picchu (and unless you’re a mountain goat, we suggest you do), Inca Rail offers a level of convenience that is difficult to match—and it’s also worth mentioning that the First Class service is priced more accessibly than other luxury operators servicing the same route. While on board, you can expect a tasty menu prepared with organic ingredients grown right in the Sacred Valley, live Peruvian music, ample windows through which you can admire the staggering Andean scenery, and a spacious Observatory Lounge complete with open-air balcony. For fresh and frothy Pisco sours this good, this is one train that’s well worth the price of admission.

19. Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, Spain

Take in all the sights and flavors of Spain ’s iconic northern coastline on this luxurious sleeper train, which over the course of a week makes its way between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. You’ll enjoy on-board cuisine that celebrates each of the distinct regions through which this train passes, from Galicia to Basque Country. A unique aspect of this train is that it remains stationary overnight, allowing for late-night excursions and explorations that are uncommon on other sleeper train experiences.

18. Glacier Express, Switzerland

It’s been said that the Glacier Express is the slowest express in the world–it takes eight hours to traverse the 180-mile journey–but boy, do the views here invite a slow journey. Connecting the resort towns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, the train provides an up-close perspective of some of this mountainous country’s most iconic natural features, including the Matterhorn, Piz Bernina, and the Rhine Gorge (dubbed Switzerland’s Grand Canyon). Book in Excellence Class and you’ll be served Champagne at your seat, followed by a six-course meal complete with wine pairings.

17. The Canadian, Canada

Take in every mile of the vast Canadian landscape from The Canadian , a special sleeper service offered by VIA Rail, the country’s national rail carrier. Keep in mind that this train is more about sightseeing from the cars than actually getting off and doing anything. But if you’re traveling in the comfort of Prestige Class—with your own private cabin, private washroom and built-in TV screen monitor with video selection—you’ll be perfectly content to take in the journey from the privacy of your very own picture window.

The Ghan Train Australia

16. The Ghan, Australia

Completed in 1929, The Ghan runs through the heart of the Australian continent , from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It may have only started running its current route in 2004, but its history dates to the 19th century, its name harkening to the Afghan camel trainers and riders who first helped chart a course through the country’s interior. The three-day all-inclusive journey sees the train lilting its way through Australia’s Red Centre with diverse landscapes passing by. Travel through the expansive ridges of the MacDonnell Ranges, witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Simpsons Gap, and visit the opal town of Coober Pedy.

JR Kyushu 363

15. JR Kyushu 36+3, Japan

This train’s unusual name derives from Kyushu being the 36th-largest island in the world, and there being three key stakeholders on this journey: the passengers, the local community, and the rail company, JR Kyushu. It isn’t a sleeper train, instead offering a series of weeklong roster of one-day itineraries around the perimeter of Kyushu–a do one, do them all, or do as many as you like situation–but the journey is no less enriching for it. The inside feels like a ryokan, featuring immaculate woodwork made from local techniques, comfortable furniture, and a mix of private and communal spaces. It’s a gorgeous way to get off the beaten track on this gorgeous Japanese island, packing in a number of stops and towns into a single day of productive–yet comfortable–sightseeing.

14. Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, Southeast Asia

The E&O is the stuff of train enthusiasts’ legends, and in February 2024, this storied train will at long last resume service after its pandemic-era pause–sort of. The train’s journey originally connected Singapore and Bangkok, but as of the new year will offer journeys through the jungles and coastlines of Malaysia, but all originating in and returning to Singapore. It isn’t the classic E&O route, but these new itineraries will offer deeper explorations of Malaysia than ever before, including guided snorkeling on Langkawi and excursions to Taman Negara National Park. Despite the new itineraries, the train still has all the old world touches that people love: Order a Singapore Sling in the Bar Car, take it to the outdoor viewing platform as the Malaysian jungle rolls on by, and you just might forget what year we’re living in.

13. Northern Belle, Europe

It’s all about the food—and the scenery, too, but mostly about the food—onboard this lovingly restored 1930s train , which zig-zags its way across the English, Scottish and Welsh countrysides. Each of the journeys on offer are day trips, so they require less of a time (and money) commitment than other luxury trains. But what the Northern Belle lacks in length she more than makes up for in quality: The meal services are exquisite, offering fine dining crafted mostly from U.K. suppliers, so you can enjoy classic British fare as the heaths, meadows, and dales roll on by.

12. The Maharajas' Express, India

There are luxury sleeper trains, and then there are luxury sleeper trains like the Maharaja’s Express , where a greeting of marigold garlands and rose petals showered at your feet kicks off the journey before your personal butler escorts you to your room. The Junior Suite rooms are surprisingly spacious, especially by train travel standards, and come with full-sized closets, comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and satellite TVs. Both of the on board watering holes–the Safari Bar and the Raja Club–have plenty of chairs, comfy sofas, books and board games. Each day of the itinerary includes special opportunities to experience India through the train’s luxurious and singular perspective: like an early-morning champagne breakfast on a private hillside overlooking the Taj Mahal.

Belmond Royal Scotsman. train interior

11. Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

It’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Nowhere is train travel more indulgent—or convenient!—than on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , which departs from and arrives at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. With only 40 guests onboard, the train circumnavigates the heart of the Scottish Highlands, passing such landmarks as the Kyle of Lochalsh and Cairngorms National Park. There’s even a dedicated spa carriage, where the specialists are trained to synchronize their motions with the natural lilts and tilts of the train. If that’s not luxury, we’re not sure what is.

Belmond Hiram Bingham

10. Belmond Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, South America

Named after the U.S. explorer who supposedly “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train line is as grand as the man’s claims. The round-trip journey connects the city of Poroy (just west of Cuzco) to the Lost City and Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu. The Belmond Hiram Bingham turns on the turn-of-the-20th-century charm, from gleaming polished wood and brass surfaces to lavish meals and accommodations, which offer plenty of space to stretch out: the perfect setting for viewing the mountains and rivers zooming past the window.

9. Golden Chariot, India

Experience a mix of Southern India’s greatest hits and lesser-explored destinations on board the iconic purple and gold Golden Chariot , which connects the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. All itineraries depart from Bengaluru, with options for both three-night and six-night journeys. This train’s strength is its access to off-beat attractions than what you’ll find on the well-worn Golden Triangle, such as the ruins of Hampi. With sparse crowds, and a comfortable train to retreat to at the end of each day, it’s an approach to India that captures all the magic this country has to offer.

8. Golden Eagle Danube Express, Europe

A pioneer in luxury trains for three decades, Golden Eagle is perhaps best known for its Silk Road and Trans-Siberian routes, but the Danube Express unlocks an approach to Southern and Eastern Europe which is no less breathtaking and engaging. The “Castles of Transylvania” route from Istanbul to Budapest is particularly unique–spend all day learning about Vlad the Impaler’s history through guided tours, then spend all night luxuriating in the comfort of the bar car or in the privacy of your room. It’s a combination of Europe’s best cities and most dramatic natural landscapes that is hard to experience in one go any other way.

Rocky Mountaineer

7. Rocky Mountaineer, North America

Traveling in a coach outfitted with picture windows and glass-dome ceilings means that a Rocky Mountaineer journey leaves no sight unseen as you traverse the dramatic scenery between Vancouver , British Columbia and Banff or Jasper, Alberta. Sample local Canadian beer, wine and snacks as you kick back and enjoy the ride. The staff’s friendly service and animated storytelling help bring the landscape to life. It’s personal touches like those which keep travelers coming away from this trip amply satisfied time and time again. Since it was founded in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has transported more than two million guests, making it the largest privately-owned premium tourist train in the world.

6. Rovos Rail, Africa

This extravagant railway has been traveling throughout Africa for over thirty years. The experiences start before you even board—when departing from Pretoria, Rovos Rail travelers are granted exclusive access to a private lounge, where Champagne and canapés greet them—and a strict “no cellphone” rule is maintained for your own good. Enjoy the moment(s) provided by this line, which range from cozy digs to formal-attired evenings, as well as full-sized, freestanding clawfoot tubs in the most grand compartments. All Rovos Rail journeys include off-train cultural, historical and safari excursions so guests can experience all the wonders that Southern Africa has to offer. The three-night Cape Town journey is a classic, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous and have a few more nights to spare, opt for the newer fifteen-day “Trail of Two Oceans” itinerary, originating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, crossing Zambia, traversing a sliver of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and concluding in Lobito, Angola.

Belmond Andean Explorer

5. Belmond Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America

Weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer transports passengers between Arequipa and Cusco on one- and two-night journeys. There are just thirty-five cabins on board, each outfitted with alpaca wool blankets and handwoven fabrics for an authentic yet luxe feel. Two dining cars and two bar cars serve the whims of every guest with bites like alpaca tortellini and (of course) champagne. The train also makes excursions to Lake Titicaca , where guests can learn about local customs, visit Incan ruins, and take in breath-taking views.

Belmond British Pullman

4. British Pullman, A Belmond Train, England

The British Pullman ’s experience is magical no matter where you’re seated. Once you depart London , you’ll embark on a journey through the bucolic British countryside, touring cities and towns like Cambridge, York, and Canterbury along the way. The restored carriages date back to the 1920s and 1930s, so expect Art Deco touches, polished interiors, and classically prepared multi-course meals—this is the same train line that has served British royalty and government officials for years, after all.

3. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

Year after year, the world’s most iconic locomotive continues to be a standard-setter in luxury. Of course, the decadent interiors are a fantasy of 1920’s Art Deco design, but it’s the impeccable service that keeps this train firmly ensconced in a class of its own. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically reappear in your cabin, no glass ever runs empty, and the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin. By day you can revel in the scenery of French countrysides and Swiss mountain scenes, and by night, the formal dress code feels anything but stuffy—in fact, playing dress up and making your way to the Champagne bar is, we think, one of the coolest experiences anyone could have on a train. For 2023, this over-the-top train is getting even more luxe updates, including eight new suites, two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages carefully restored by expert French craftsmen and designers–so there’s no time like the present to book that bucket-list trip.

Palace on Wheels Train

2. Palace on Wheels, India

India’s best-known train, the Palace on Wheels , offers a number of trips that range from a couple days to week-long excursions. Embarking from New Delhi through the Land of Kings, trips take you through the famed Pink City of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, where guests are greeted by majestic UNESCO sites like the Amer Fort as well as 16th century palaces. You can also visit Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the perfect stop for a tour of some of the country's most iconic sites. Along the way, enjoy regional cuisine in well-appointed, colorful carriages decked out in Indian textiles.

Seven Stars Kyushu

1. Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Train lovers consider this opulent Japanese locomotive among the most spacious and comfortable of them all. Every inch of Seven Stars' Kyushu train—from the beds, to the bathroom sinks, to the woodwork, to the porcelain dinner plates—is handmade by Japanese artisans, and the service is simply exquisite, with each journey limited to a positively intimate twenty passengers; but it’s not just about the onboard experience with Seven Stars. These four-day, three-night trips travel a circuit around the island of Kyushu, making stops at the region’s best shrines, onsens, porcelain studios, and more, so you truly feel like you’re exploring an authentic side of Japan , far away from the more obvious tourist tracks.

Rocky Mountaineer

There can be few more relaxing ways to see the glorious landscapes of Utah and Colorado than from the Rocky Mountaineer, said Ed Grenby in The Daily Telegraph . After three decades of service in Canada, this “gleaming” royal-blue train recently began its second-ever season in the US, offering two-day, 356-mile journeys between Moab and Denver, with a night at a hotel in Glenwood, a town known for its hot springs and “raffish frontier feel”.

Carriages are largely encased in glass, and seats can be turned to face forwards, making it easy to drink in the “epic” vistas, including “scale-defying” deserts, sunlit prairies and the “towering” canyons of the Colorado River. The pace is often slow, so you can get a good look at passing wildlife, including coyote and bald eagles. The trip costs from £1,270pp, full board.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express near Roppen on the Tyrol Pass in Austria

Launched in 1883 by a Belgian entrepreneur named George Nagelmackers, the Orient Express service from Paris to Istanbul reached peak popularity in the 1930s, before dying a slow death. Today, Belmond runs an occasional luxury service on the same route, and Accor is due to launch another in 2025. But there are more affordable ways to make this “nostalgia-laden” journey if you’re willing to change trains a few times, says Monisha Rajesh in the FT . Indeed, doing so is arguably an authentic choice – until 1889, the original service involved several changes; and the experience is enriched by stopping in cities along the way.

I opted for Vienna, Bucharest and Sofia, and rounded off my trip with a stay at Nagelmackers’ own Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul, which counts Greta Garbo and Agatha Christie among its past guests. Still, the greatest delight remains the journey itself. You pass through magnificent landscapes, but equally “romantic” is the experience of gliding through cities at night, “watching curtains being drawn, hair being brushed loose, late dinners being eaten, and holding the gaze of smokers in the dark”.

The Ella Odyssey

Climbing across the “wet, misty” mountains between Sri Lanka’s coastal capital, Colombo, and the highland city of Badulla, the Main Line is one of the world’s most spectacular railways. Now you can ride it on the Ella Odyssey , says Adrian Bridge in The Daily Telegraph – a new “tourist-friendly” service that offers “an upgraded level of comfort” and longer stops at ten of the best viewpoints along the way. Built in stages under British rule between 1858 and 1924, the line passes through forests and tea plantations, navigating steep ascents and edging around deep gorges where waterfalls plunge over “craggy” cliffs.

It’s a journey “redolent of another age”, owing to the “astonishing beauty” of the landscape, the “wonderful” sounds of the train, the “beautifully maintained” stations, and the “dainty white-bread sandwiches” served with tea in the buffet car. The seats are “smart and upholstered” even in third class, staff are plentiful and “unfailingly friendly”, and there are usually lots of chatty locals among the passengers, making for a wonderful sense of “camaraderie”.

A train near the Arctic Circle in Norway

The rail journey from London to the frozen wastes of northern Scandinavia is about the same length as that to Istanbul, and it is charged with a similar spirit of adventure. You can do it both ways in three weeks with Discover the World ’s new Arctic Rail Odyssey, says Emma Thomson in Wanderlust , stopping in cities along the way including Cologne, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Oslo on the journey out, and in Stockholm and Hamburg on the way back. The scenery is at its most spectacular on the final northwards leg, from the Norwegian port of Trondheim, across the Arctic Circle, to Bodø.

Villages huddle around rocky bays with “frostbitten piers”, pine forests peek through blankets of snow “as smooth as satin”, and sharkstooth mountains savage the sky in the “epically scenic” Lofoten Islands. Next come Kiruna and Boden in Sweden, where the activities on offer include snowmobiling, ice fishing and husky sledding, and you can stay at the “iconic” Icehotel, the Treehotel and the Arctic Bath (all of which are true to their names). Go in early spring or autumn for the northern lights, and in summer for the midnight sun. The trip costs from £4,120pp.

The Qinghai-Tibet rail line is located at an altitude of 5,100m

Few train journeys can “literally take your breath away”, but as the Qinghai-Tibet railway peaks at more than 5,000m above sea level, “most passengers will experience some altitude sickness on this extraordinary ride”, said Condé Nast Traveller . The route connects Xining in mainland China to Lhasa in Tibet and features the “highest railway in the world”. It runs through territory “so treacherous” that it was deemed an “engineering impossibility”.

Passing some of the most stunning high mountains, this is definitely the “roof of the world”, said Nellie Huang on Lonely Planet . For centuries, Tibet was “cut off from the outside world by its remote location, extreme climate and geographic environment”. That was until the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in 2006, which connected Tibet to the rest of China.

The Laos-China railway is ‘captivatingly scenic’

With its unspoilt countryside and glorious old Buddhist temples, Laos has a quiet charm that sets it apart from its busier neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam. And this is a great time to visit, says Mark Stratton in The Times , with the opening of the Laos-China railway. This 262-mile, Chinese-funded route cuts across the country from its capital, Vientiane, to Boten, on the Chinese border.

It promises to be an economic “game-changer” for Laos ; and it makes the overland journey from Vientiane to the “petite” city of Luang Prabang (the country’s “only real tourism hotspot”) far easier. By bus, it took ten hours; now you can get there by train in a little more than two. Tickets are not available online, and are often sold out at the stations, so consider going with a tour operator, like InsideAsia Tours , that guarantees them.

Life onboard the train feels faintly “Orwellian”, with regular announcements instructing you to report “antisocial activities”. But the ride is “captivatingly scenic”, past rice paddies harrowed by buffaloes bearing wooden yokes, and “denticulated” limestone peaks that emerge from misty forests.

Rovos Rail luxury train travelling between Cape Town and Pretoria

Founded in 1989, South Africa-based Rovos Rail offers a range of bespoke luxury train journeys, including a spectacular 14-night “African trilogy”, nine-night golf safari and a 15-night “trail of two oceans” east-west African adventure.

Beautifully rebuilt trains carry a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 appointed suites and are also available for charter. The style is traditional, with teak-panelled suites, Victorian-style dining and a superb wine list highlighting South African wines. In the spirit of a bygone era of travel, there are no radios or TVs, and internet use is confined to travellers’ suites.

Regarded as “the world’s most luxurious train”, it feels like “a hotel on wheels”, said The Luxury Travel Expert , who journeyed on the popular three-day, 1,000-mile trip from Pretoria to Cape Town across the Karoo’s “endless desert landscapes” and the Western Cape’s “verdant valleys”. With “discreet and friendly service”, five-star cuisine and a selection of South Africa’s finest wines, Rovos Rail “harks back to a simpler, more elegant era encompassing the timeless grace and high romance of African exploration”.

Why not settle down in the observation car and enjoy the glens and castles as they glide by? This year Belmond announced a partnership with Dior for the Dior Spa Royal Scotsman, a “unique spa on rails”.

Writing on The Luxury Train Club , James MacPherson Ferguson of Yorba Linda Travel said the “life/bucket list” journey on the Royal Scotsman was, without question, “beyond the brochure”. This is an “enriching” experience for “all lovers of luxury travel to partake”.

Seven Stars train in Kyushu, Japan

The Seven Stars luxury sleeper service across the island of Kyushu in Japan is such a favourite with travellers that you must apply to book a journey. The island, on Japan’s southern tip, offers gorgeous scenery and a wealth of hot springs that are nurtured by the area’s volcanoes.

Carriages are beautifully furnished in a fusion of western and Japanese design. Attention to detail in the design and furnishing of each guest room is unsurpassed. There are three routes available: the Kirishima Journey (three nights, four days); the Unzen Journey (three nights, four days); and the Kyushu Tour Journey (one night, two days).

This cruise train is “meant to bring new life to train travel” and to “make the travel itself the integral part of a Kyushu vacation”, said the Japan Rail Pass blog. Plush, classic décor “harkens back to bygone days”, while the technological advancements and large, picturesque viewing windows “push the comfort of travel by train to new heights”.

The Ghan train at Alice Springs station

The Ghan will take you on a luxurious journey to the heart of the antipodean bush in Australia. It takes 48 hours – and three nights – to travel the nearly 2,000 miles across Australia from Adelaide to Darwin. The train stops at Alice Springs, where you can take a tour by helicopter. Then return to your spacious cabin – a private lounge with deluxe seating, a table and two ottomans.

The all-inclusive fare includes gourmet meals, prepared and served in the traditionally styled Queen Adelaide restaurant car. Chefs work with local suppliers to source the best regional ingredients. Complement your meal with fine Australian wines.

Crossing Australia on The Ghan is a trip “full of laid-back luxury and endless surprises”, said Carolyne Jasinski on Escape.com.au . The itinerary is “full-on”, so “brace yourself for a busy few days”. Guests can enjoy a mix of “sitting and watching the world go by, then getting out to explore it all”.

The Skyline panoramic viewing carriage on The Canadian

Covering almost 2,800 miles over four days and four nights, Via Rail’s cross-country journey is epic in proportion. The Canadian glides through the countryside, taking in stops at Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and the Rocky Mountain town of Jasper, as well as many smaller communities. The service runs throughout the year, offering the chance to see the deep, snowy winter or the lush greenery of Canada’s summer.

Tickets on The Canadian range from economy and sleeper plus to prestige class. The most comfortable – and expensive – option is the first-class prestige ticket, which gives you a private cabin with a bed for two, private washroom with shower, and an in-cabin flat-screen monitor with video selection.

The Skyline (dome) cars offer panoramic top-floor views with windows extended to the ceiling and on-board activities in peak season include wine tasting.

The TranzAlpine train in New Zealand

On New Zealand’s South Island, the 140-mile journey from Christchurch to Greymouth offers some of the country’s most beautiful countryside and takes just under five hours. Facilities include the Scenic Cafe, open-air viewing carriage, and scenic class carriages.

Stops along the way include New Zealand’s highest settlement, the stunning Arthur’s Pass, nestled at 740m above sea level in acres of national parklands. The train meanders through the country’s Alpine region, clinging to rivers, crossing viaducts and passing through lush sub-tropical forests.

The TranzAlpine emerges from its mountainous journey in Greymouth, on New Zealand’s rugged western Tasman Sea coast. Stay an hour and catch the train back to Christchurch, or book overnight in Greymouth and explore the former mining town. One-way fares start from NZ$189 (£95).

The Caledonian Sleeper train travelling over Forth Bridge

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen, we will shortly be arriving at Edinburgh Waverley train station.” It’s a bit of a surreal thing to hear in the early AM, especially when you nodded off in England, but that’s exactly what happens when you take the Caledonian Sleeper to Scotland’s capital city, said Mike Starling on TheWeek.co.uk . Departing London Euston at 11.30pm on a Sunday night, eight hours later we’re rolling into Waverley, the station located right in the heart of Edinburgh.

Caledonian Sleeper review: taking the slow train to Scotland

With air travel more problematic and guilt-inducing than enjoyable these days, the thought of taking the night train to Scotland somewhat intrigued me. As did the idea of waking up north of the border and then strolling into the centre of one of the world’s great cities. Is the Sleeper train the best way to travel between the two capitals? For me, it’s a resounding yes.

The northbound “Lowlander” route from London Euston goes to Glasgow Central as well as Edinburgh Waverley. The northbound “Highlander” route runs from London Euston and splits into three services to Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen. From London, the Lowlander sets off as one train and stops at Watford Junction and Carlisle. It then splits into two trains at Carstairs before carrying on to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train

A trip aboard the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco will tell you a lot about American culture, says Anthony Sattin in Condé Nast Traveller . At 2,438 miles, and taking 51 hours, it’s also one of the longest rides in the US. “Plenty long enough for me.” It leaves at 2pm on the dot. “In the evening the Zephyr passes through the Midwest Corn Belt and crosses the Missouri River into Nebraska, and by morning the world has changed again: snow-dusted mountains crowd the horizon.” At Denver, the guard recommends that “folks de-train” to see the station. The most beautiful part of the journey, however, lies between Denver and Salt Lake City.

There, the train climbs into the mountains, “twists along rivers, cuts through sheer canyons and roars through the six-mile Moffat Tunnel”. When the lights of San Francisco, and the Pacific beyond it, finally hove into view, a plane cut across the sky, reminding Sattin that he could have flown the distance in a fraction of the time. The train, though, is better.

Andean Explorer, a Belmond train

Lake Titicaca in Peru is best reached from the old Inca capital of Cuzco aboard Belmond’s luxury Andean Explorer, says Hugh Thompson in Spear’s . Leaving late in the morning, it climbs to the heights of the La Raya pass. “It harks back to a distant age of luxury train travel, sipping pisco sours in the open observatory car as we travelled through what is still a very rural part of Peru… alpaca were grazing in the fields and the maize stubble was being burnt after the harvest.”

The next day you arrive at Lake Titicaca – “a spectacular sight” at dawn, when the “quality of light over the vast expanse of high altitude water” and the low clouds passing through the stratosphere make for a wonderful sunrise. “Passengers line the quayside to watch, helped by strong cappuccinos, as the long, lean islands on the lake were silhouetted against the rising sun like emerging black submarines.

St Pölten to Mariazell train - Mariazell Railway over the Saugraben viaduct

The journey from St Pölten to Mariazell in Austria is more than 78km long and lasts two and a half hours, says Wanderlust . This narrow-gauge service is officially split into two sections – valleys and mountains – and crosses one of the wildest regions of the Austrian Alps.

The valleys section stretches from St Pölten to Frankenfels, a land of “pretty grazing meadows and gentle pathways (tickets allow you to hop on and off)”, while the mountains section “climbs up through the ruggedly handsome Erlauf gorge and the peaks of Ötscher-Tormäuer Naturpark”.

Grab a first-class panorama carriage for widescreen views along the way from May to October. Heritage rail fans will love the 100-year-old Otscherbår train that runs from June to late September.

13 Most Scenic Train Rides in the World

Take a journey through some of the world's most beautiful landscapes with these scenic train rides, from the Rocky Mountains to the Swiss Alps.

wonderful train journey

There's never been a better time to explore the world by rail. Some of the world's most scenic train rides were created mainly to take passengers through beautiful, perhaps inaccessible locales, while others connect cities and towns, replacing air travel for shorter trips with convenient downtown stations and frequent schedules. On some trains, the beauty of the interior décor rivals that of the passing scenery, and many train stations are destinations in themselves, with art, vintage architecture, gourmet dining, and classic cocktail venues. Here are 13 of the most scenic train journeys around the world, from Japan to the United Kingdom.

Pacific Surfliner, United States

This Amtrak route hugs the Pacific Coast starting from San Luis Obispo, where you can explore the lively college town or venture out to nearby wineries or a historic mission. From there, ride in comfort for 350 miles of ocean views with beaches, rocky coastline, quaint towns, and little between you and the blue Pacific. In San Diego, visit Balboa Park museums or dine in Little Italy or the Gaslamp Quarter. If time allows, take advantage of train stations along the way that are within walking distance of local attractions. In Santa Barbara, head to the nearby beach or Funk Zone , an artsy collection of boutiques, restaurants, and cafes, or sample California wines as you stroll and sip through the Urban Wine Trail. Union Station in Los Angeles is a destination in itself with historic art and décor, or venture out to Downtown L.A. or the Mexican markets on Olvera Street . Dine or enjoy a cocktail at Traxx while you wait to board for your next adventure.

The Jacobite Steam Train, Scotland

Starting in the Scottish Highlands town of Fort William near Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, this 84-mile round-trip train journey winds through green hills, crystal blue lochs, deep valleys, and quaint villages. A highlight of the trip is the crossing of the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct with its graceful curves and towering columns, overlooking Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. Harry Potter fans will recognize this view as well as the steam engine and carriages which became the Hogwarts Express, courtesy of West Coast Railways which operates the Jacobite. The train stops briefly at Glenfinnan Station and then passes the lovely towns of Lochailort, Arisaig, and Morar. At the last stop in Mallaig on Scotland’s west coast, passengers have about an hour and a half to explore before the return trip to Fort William. The Jacobite Steam Train runs from April to October, and purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.

Napa Valley Wine Train, United States

Riding through rows of grapevines, across farmland, and past picturesque wineries with a backdrop of green hills is one of the pleasures of the 36-mile round-trip journey from downtown Napa to St. Helena. Board in an industrial section of Napa and enjoy views of the town’s outdoor contemporary art with murals, sculpture, landscaping, and parks promoted by Rail Arts District Napa . Continue through the towns of Yountville, Rutherford, and Oakville with gourmet meals and wines to enhance the journey. It’s a convenient and safe way to explore and taste wines, with a variety of stops and winery tours available. The train cars themselves are part of the fun, adding to the vintage feel of train travel. Mahogany paneling, polished brass, opulent fabrics, and etched glass partitions were just a few additions in the extensive renovation of the historic cars.

Grand Canyon Railway, United States

This 130-mile round-trip journey begins about 30 miles west of Flagstaff in Williams, Arizona and heads north to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park . On the way, passengers are encouraged to get into the Old West spirit with musical entertainment, cowboy characters, and other surprises while the terrain changes from the Ponderosa pine forest of Williams to open prairie and back to Pinion pines near the Grand Canyon. In addition to the spectacular landscape, guests might spot wildlife that includes elk, mountain lions, deer, bald eagles, owls, and California condors. The daily departure time is 9:30 a.m., and the trip takes two hours and 15 minutes. Visitors have about three hours to explore the South Rim, starting with the historic Grand Canyon Depot dating back to 1910. Guests can enjoy ranger programs, a scenic walk along Hermit Road or the Rim Trail, the El Tovar Hotel, and magnificent views in every direction.

The Chepe Express, Mexico

This journey crosses some of Mexico’s most spectacular terrain, much of it inaccessible by other means. Said to be four times the size of the Grand Canyon, Copper Canyon in the northwest state of Chihuahua is actually several canyons, the deepest at 6,167 feet. The length of the ride depends on where you board, but the trip on the Chepe Express from Los Mochis near the west coast to inland Creel will be about nine hours. Opened in 1961 after several decades of construction, the train crosses 37 bridges and passes through 86 tunnels. The landscape includes rugged terrain, mountains, gorges, deep ravines, and even agricultural areas. A few tips: Book your trip in advance or use a tour company to arrange your visit. When heading eastward, sit on the right side of the train for the best views.

Metro-North Railroad Hudson Line, United States

This commuter train originates in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal and travels along the eastern shore of the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie. The trip takes about two hours and passes through historic towns with views of the river, forests, and stately mansions. While daily commuters might take the scenery for granted, sightseers can enjoy the beautiful round-trip journey for less than $50. Heading north out of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal — a must-see destination in itself — the train passes Yankee Stadium in the borough of the Bronx and continues along the river through towns well worth the time to stop and visit. Beacon is a walkable artist community offering galleries, boutiques, and the Dia Beacon contemporary art museum. The river and its lush surroundings attracted wealthy individuals to build fabulous mansions, many of which are open for tours. These include Boscobel in Garrison, Kykuit in Sleepy Hollow , Springwood in Tarrytown, the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, and Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie. Check tour hours before stopping, and for the best views, sit on the train’s left heading north.

Kuranda Scenic Railway, Australia

This journey takes guests through one of the world’s oldest rainforests in Queensland, Australia. The two-hour trip begins in Cairns and passes scenery that includes trees, waterfalls, mountains, and ravines. Barron Gorge, one of Queensland’s most popular national parks, can be viewed from the train or by driving a short distance from Kuranda at the end of the train line. In Kuranda, guests can shop for locally made art and handicrafts or stop at a café. A bird aviary, butterfly sanctuary, and reptile park are other attractions. Historic Kuranda Station, over 100 years old, is part of the experience, too. Some visitors choose to take the railway in one direction and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway in the other to fully experience the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

This train travels between Zermatt and St. Moritz , Switzerland, through the Swiss Alps with breathtaking views of mountains, streams, and quaint towns. Starting in the mountain village of Zermatt near the Matterhorn, the journey continues past rocky peaks, crossing the Rhone into the Upper Rhone Valley. The Oberalp Pass, near the source of the Rhine River, is the highest point of the trip at nearly 7,000 feet. From there, the train descends along the Rhine Valley with one of the most dramatic views of the trip, the Rhine Gorge, sometimes called the “Grand Canyon of Switzerland.” Continuing south through a narrow valley and through the Albula tunnel, the eight-hour journey ends in St. Moritz, Switzerland’s elegant vacation resort city. The train’s panoramic windows make viewing easy, and headphones are provided for narration. Several classes of service are available, and there’s a snack trolley, full meals, and an onboard bar. With an Excellence Class ticket, exclusive amenities include a premium multi-course meal with local wines and a special seating area.

TranzAlpine Train, New Zealand

The four-and-a-half-hour journey between Christchurch and Greymouth on New Zealand’s South Island is run once daily by KiwiRail as one of their Great Journeys of New Zealand. Departing Christchurch at 8:15 a.m., the train passes through farmland, past sheep and cattle, and then on towards the Southern Alps. After about an hour, the climb into the mountains begins, across steel bridges over deep gorges and through short tunnels. There’s a short stop at Arthur's Pass station and then a trip through one of New Zealand’s longest tunnels, over a deep valley, and across another river with views of waterfalls. After a one-hour stop in the small town of Greymouth, the train returns to Christchurch, making the coast-to-coast round trip about an 11-hour journey. Reclining seats, panoramic windows, and skylights make the ride comfortable and rewarding. The café offers food, snacks, beer, wine, and spirits. Heading to Greymouth, the best views are on the right side of the train.

Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka

This seven-hour trip takes passengers through remote villages, past waterfalls and lush green hills, and through the tea plantations for which the country is known. Originally built by the British in the late 1800s, Sri Lanka’s rail system was originally used to transport tea and coffee for export. Now, the train is a favorite way to explore the country, view the varied scenery, and observe villages and local people along the way. Ella is a hill country village, worth exploring before you board or when you arrive. Kandy, located in central Sri Lanka, is larger with sacred Buddhist shrines and scenic Kandy Lake. Most of the trains offer first-class observation cars with air conditioning, and some provide sleeping berths and reserved seats. From Kandy, the better views are on the right side. Tickets are available at train stations throughout the country, and the schedule can be checked online .

Rocky Mountaineer Rockies to the Red Rocks, United States

Courtesy of Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer offers four scenic train routes through some of North America’s most stunning landscapes, complete with luxurious cars outfitted with glass dome windows. The Rockies to the Red Rocks route travels between Moab, Utah and Denver, Colorado, with a stop in Glenwood Springs, where you’ll spend the night to break up the trip. Throughout the two-day journey, you can enjoy incredible views while traveling along canyons, mountains, and rivers and enjoying the food and beverage service on board.

Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Hirokazu Fukushima/Courtesy of Kyushu Railway Company

Travel around the lush Japanese island of Kyushu in comfort on the Seven Stars in Kyushu train from Kyushu Railway Company. The “ Seven Stars ” name isn’t just a sign of high-quality service; according to the website, it represents the seven-car train, the seven prefectures of Kyushu, and the seven major attractions of the island "nature; food; onsen (hot springs); history and culture; 'power spots' to refresh the mind, body, and soul; humanity; and trains." Pick from four-day, three-night or two-day, one-night journeys that begin and end in Hakata.

Alaska Railroad Aurora Winter Train, United States

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Take in views of the icy Alaska wilderness aboard Alaska Railroad’s Aurora Winter Train . As you might have guessed from the name, this route gives passengers the exciting opportunity to look for the northern lights once they arrive in Fairbanks, the train’s final destination. The 12-hour journey from Anchorage is long, but large picture windows and comfortable seats make for a cozy spot to sit and watch the frozen scenery pass by.

1.  qinghai-tibet railway from xining to lhasa, tibet autonomous region.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining to Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region

Few trains can take your breath away, but climbing to more than 5,200 metres, the Qinghai-Tibet railway from Xining to Lhasa can leave passengers more than a little tight in the chest. On the highest train in the world, compartments are fitted with gold nozzles pumping in purified oxygen to alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness as passengers gaze at the yellow plateau and electric-blue skies. Suede-soft mountains are dusted with snow, and raggedy-looking yaks dot the landscape, coloured prayer flags twisting in the breeze. As the train curls around the Kunlun Mountains, its interiors darken from the shadows of looming ice and snow before the final descent into Lhasa.

2.  The Skeena from Jasper to Prince Rupert, Canada

The Skeena from Jasper to Prince Rupert, Canada

A well-kept secret, the Skeena runs between Jasper in Alberta and Prince Rupert in the furthest reaches of British Columbia. Over two days, the train winds around the Rocky Mountains, their white peaks blazing in perfect sunshine, their bodies reflected in water as still as glass. Armies of Douglas fir march down to the lakes’ edges, and passengers will likely spot moose, caribou, golden eagles and a brown bear or two. Although popular with tourists who enjoy the domed panoramic viewing car, three-course meals and constant wine, the train is also a lifeline for First Nations people who have no other mode of transport in this desolate region. Like mushroom pickers, fishermen and hikers, they emerge from the trees and flag down the train, which has to stop – even between stations.

3.  Sagano Scenic railway in Kyoto, Japan

Sagano Scenic railway in Kyoto, Japan

The antithesis of Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains, this nineteenth-century narrow-gauge railway chugs along at 15 miles an hour, offering passengers close-up views of the Hozu River. In spring, the delicate scent of cherry blossoms drifts off pink explosions of sakura , but one of the most popular times to travel is in autumn when Japanese maple trees take on a range of colours as though the forests were on fire. Flaming in shades of orange, papaya and dark red, the mountainsides look as though they’ve been splashed with cans of paint.

4.  Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, Vietnam

Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, Vietnam

With a creak and a wail, the Reunification Express rolls out of Hanoi station, taking two nights to travel along the backbone of the country down to Saigon. From behind limp-curtained windows, passengers are drawn through the guts of Vietnam , granted views into kitchens, backyards and alleyways, where chefs hose pans, mothers plait children’s hair and tiny coloured vests dry on makeshift washing lines. Between Hué and Da Nang, jungle rises up around the train, waxy leaves slap the sides, and hot sunshine flashes in between barred windows. And below, the South China Sea opens into an expanse of hazy blue, a finger of cream sand running along its frothy edge.

5.  Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles, USA

Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles, USA

Sailing out of the seaport city of Seattle , the Coast Starlight curves down the western edge of America, showcasing the best views, food and conversation that Amtrak has to offer. Get comfy in the sightseer lounge with a view of the Pacific Ocean, where turquoise hues bleed into one, and tiny waves peak in the blue. Buskers strum guitars, students play poker, and retirees chat to young travellers about their days on the old railroads. Serving everything from enchiladas to shrimp in lobster sauce, the dining car is the hub of the action where unlikely friendships strike up, and strangers swap stories until the train barrels along the final stretch of sunlit coast and sides into L.A. Union Station .

6.  Mandovi Express from Mumbai to Madgaon, India

Mandovi Express from Mumbai to Madgaon, India

Running down the southwest coast of India , the Konkan Railway is a feat of engineering excellence, with the Western Ghats flanking one side and the Arabian Sea sparkling quietly on the other. Submerged between coconut groves, palm trees and great swathes of wet greenery, trains travel with the doors flung open and warm air billowing up the aisles. The Mandovi Express is one of many services on this route, but it’s widely known for housing the best pantry car on Indian Railways, with vendors traipsing up the aisles carrying baskets of hot pakoras, chicken lollipops and pots of fresh biryani with yoghurt.

7.  Cannes to Ventimiglia, France

Cannes to Ventimiglia, France

A commuter service running between the resort town of Cannes and the lovely old border town of Ventimiglia, this double-decker train is usually filled with elderly shoppers carrying bread in paper bags, students en route to university in Nice and tourists on day trips to the beach. But for the unaccustomed, it’s a fabulous 90-minute journey along the French Riviera during which passengers can watch the Ligurian sea twinkle like a sheet of diamonds around curves of beach where tanned bodies play volleyball and pipe-smoking men play pétanque . From the top deck, you can peek over wrought-iron balconies, see bundles of magenta bougainvillea pour down walls on thin streets and listen to the sound of supercars growling through Monaco.

8.  The Death Railways from Bangkok to Nam Tok, Thailand

The Death Railways from Bangkok to Nam Tok, Thailand

During World War II, the Japanese used prisoners of war to construct a railway connecting Thailand and Burma – with the aim of invading India. Under wretched conditions, the men built 372 miles of track, with one death for every sleeper laid. With a harrowing history, a segment of the railway continues to run today from Bangkok to Nam Tok through some of Thailand’s most spectacular scenery. With branches thwacking the windows and vendors hawking sticky rice and chicken satay on board, the train runs along trestle bridges, over wide rivers with floating villages bobbing around, and even across the infamous bridge on the River Kwai. There is a museum at the end where passengers can listen to testimony from survivors and walk along old sleepers still visible through the dirt.

9.  Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from Venice to London

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from Venice to London

Probably the most famous train in the world, the Orient Express is a theatrical performance for those who long to hark back to a golden age of travel. With lacquered marquetry, varnished walls and personal stewards to make up the cabins, the train sweeps passengers into a reverie of pure decadence. Over the clink and shiver of glasses on the table, passengers dine on foie gras, chicken oysters and chunks of sweet lobster tail while the train curves through the Dolomites and around Lake Geneva, with passengers waking in Paris to a basket of warm croissants and fresh coffee. Unable to travel through the Channel Tunnel, the train deposits passengers in Calais, but there’s a British Pullman service waiting in Kent to carry passengers along the final leg to London Victoria, accompanied by salmon and cucumber sandwiches and pots of hot tea.

The Qinghai-Tibet railway is the highest rail route in the world

Leaving the cosmopolitan coastal city of Vancouver behind, passengers are treated to brilliant sights from the comfort of luxurious carriages, including the wild waters of Hell’s Gate in Fraser Canyon and steep tracks running alongside the Thompson River. The journey starts with an overnight stay in the lakeside city of Kamloops, before rising over the Canadian Rockies and arriving at blissful Banff.

Glacier Express, Switzerland

Connecting the two most picturesque mountain resorts in Switzerland – Zermatt and St Moritz – the Glacier Express is the most relaxing way to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps. Travelling eastwards from Zermatt, the day-long trip covers 91 tunnels and 291 bridges as it rolls past the alpine meadows, pristine mountain lakes and picture-perfect hamlets of southern Switzerland. Highlights of the journey include Oberalp Pass – the highest point on the ride at 244m (6,706ft) – and the Landwasser Viaduct — a magnificent six-arch structure standing at around 61m (200ft) and plunging into a tunnel cut straight into the mountainside.

TranzAlpine, New Zealand

Passengers are treated to a range of scenery onboard the TranzAlpine, which travels from Christchurch to Greymouth

All aboard the TranzAlpine for a stage-side seat to the most dramatic landscape in New Zealand — the Southern Alps. Starting out in Christchurch , the TranzAlpine travels northwest through the fertile fields of the Canterbury Plains alongside the Waimakariri River, before rising up into the mountains, where it crosses the mighty Staircase Viaduct. Passing through the magnificent mountains of Arthur’s Pass National Park, the TranzAlpine chugs onwards through the subtropical rainforests of the West Coast. The journey ends in the historic former gold mining town of Greymouth.

West Highland Line, Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland

The impressive steam train on the West Highland Line was used in the Harry Potter movie franchise

The West Highland Line is an excellent way to experience the wild, western coast of Scotland as it travels through the most diverse scenery in the country. Once the train leaves Glasgow – the most populated city in Scotland– the urban landscape quickly succumbs to verdant glens and tranquil lochs. Heading northwards, the West Highland Line passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor, before skirting the towering Ben Nevis and touching down in Fort William. Switching direction and moving westwards, the train then traverses the Glenfinnan Viaduct (featured in the Harry Potter film series) prior to arriving at the bustling port of Mallaig.

The Flåm Railway, Norway

Just an hour long, the Flåm Railway ride through Norway is short but sweet

At just an hour long, the Flåm Railway may not be the grandest of journeys, but it’s certainly among the most picturesque. In fact, it’s one of top attractions in Norway and is frequently hailed as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. The railway rises 863m (2,831ft) from the starting point in the tiny village of Flåm in the Sognefjord (making it one of the steepest rail routes in Europe), and passes by deep ravines, cascading waterfalls and towering peaks to the mountaintop station of Myrdal. The Flåm Railway is most magical in the colder months when a blanket of snow turns the landscape into a winter wonderland.

Rovos Rail’s Namibia Safari, South Africa

The Rovos Rail luxury train cuts through beautiful southern Africa

Rovos Rail’s Namibia Safari, a luxury train trek spanning some 3,219km (2,000mi), passes some of the most spectacular scenery the Southern African region has to offer. The train departs from Pretoria and takes passengers into Kimberley – a former diamond-rush town that’s home to Big Hole, one of the largest hand-dug mines in the world. It then traverses the Northern Cape and Fish River Canyon. As it moves onwards into the Kalahari Desert, the train visits Windhoek – the lively capital of Namibia – before crossing the Namib Desert and finishing at Swakopmund. This last stop is a perfectly preserved German Hansa town on the Namibian coast.

Belmond Hiram Bingham, Peru

The luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham is named after the American explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu

See the Unesco-protected Machu Picchu a different way from the Belmond Hiram Bingham. This train ride travels through the most romantic scenery in Peru , and ends at the ancient Inca ruins, high in the Andes Mountains. It starts from the ancient city of Cusco, before traversing the Sacred Valley of the Incas (a stunning vale formed by the winding Urubamba River), and passing through the tiny village of Ollantaytambo.

Golden Eagle Danube Express, Istanbul to Budapest

The Golden Eagle Danube Express is described as a luxurious hotel on wheels

Traverse from Istanbul to Budapest on this epic route through four countries. You’ll start in Turkey with a chance to see the Blue Mosque, before wending through Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary over seven days. The highlight for some, particularly literary fans, will be the views of 14th-century Bran Castle – also known as Dracula’s Castle – in Brasov, Romania.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Colorado, USA

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad travels along the Animas River as it passes through the San Juan Mountains

The coal-fired Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is the one for history buffs. It was originally constructed as a means of hauling silver and gold from the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, and has been in continuous operation since it was completed in 1882. Now, the railroad allows passengers to enjoy the same incredible journey taken by Old West miners and settlers more than a century ago. The 72km (45mi) route moves alongside the Animas River, winding through the remote wilderness and fabulous canyons of San Juan National Forest.

Bangkok to Nam Tok, Thailand

The bridge over the River Kwai is an important WWII landmark and memorial

It may be nicknamed The Death Railway, due to its dark World War II roots, but don’t be fooled by the misleading moniker of this section of the Thailand-Burma railway. Over 402km (250mi) of Thai railroad track will tempt travellers with a fantastic journey from Bangkok to Nam Tok. Trudging deep into the jungle, the train rattles along wooden trestles, waving to vibrant stations and batting away low-hanging branches. Though this route is a sombre one, travellers can learn more about the tragic history of the railway in Kanchanaburi, just west of Bangkok.

Cannes, France, to Ventimiglia, Italy

The Riviera Railway affords beautiful views of Villefranche-sur-Mer

Train travel often caters to slow travel, but for those who are short on time, the Riviera Railway is ideal. Travellers are transported from Cannes, France to Ventimiglia, Italy, in under two hours with spectacular views of the Mediterranean. Shutterbugs will love snapping shots of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, while country-counters can conveniently check Monaco off their list. When the train rolls to a stop in Ventimiglia, ancient Roman sites and sun-soaked beaches await.

Hanoi to Da Nang, Vietnam

See amazing landscape when you travel through the mountains of Da Nang

The capital city of Vietnam is rich with culture, but visitors would be remiss if they didn’t take advantage of the diverse scenery offered via the Reunification Express. Though one could ride the rails all the way to Ho Chi Minh City, the stretch leading to Da Nang is a wondrous journey in itself. Miles under the jungle canopy are juxtaposed with intimate views of villages and jaw-dropping cliffside glimpses of the South China Sea. Da Nang awaits with French colonial architecture and century-old pagodas.

Xining to Lhasa, China

The Qinghai-Tibet railway is a high-elevation route that connects Xining, Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, Tibet

Mountain climbers and locomotive lovers should set their sights on the Qinghai-Tibet railway. Scaling up the mountainside to around 5,000m (16,404ft) above sea level, this route is home to the highest section of railway in the world. Passengers shouldn’t be surprised if they are left breathless by the temples, wildlife and snow-capped mountain tops – thankfully, purified oxygen is pumped into each train compartment to help with any altitude sickness.

Mumbai to Madgaon, India

The Mandovi Express is named after the Mandovi River, of which passengers have spectacular views

There are few better ways to spend the day along the Konkan Coast of India than on the Mandovi Express. This half-day train ride from Mumbai to Madgaon may consume other breakfast, lunch and dinner plans, but it’s well worth the trip for those with an appetite for indulging in one of the finest routes offered by Indian Railways. The Mandovi Express has a reputation for serving great regional cuisine (at an extra cost) throughout the 12-hour journey. Between quaint countryside views and flavourful meals, travellers will disembark with a full stomach and a full camera roll. Nick Dauk contributed additional reporting.

Travelling by train has always made me dream, not only for having multiple destinations at our reach within a few hours, but also for the peace it brings as it lets us look at the landscape from the window, read a book, chat or watch a film.

These are some of the most wonderful journeys around the world that we can do by train, some more serene, some more adventurous, but all absolutely thrilling. It will be hard to choose just one.

1. The Train to the Clouds, Argentina

And we start in the clouds… 4000 meters above sea level, in the Andes, “ Tren a las Nubes ”, is one of the highest and most iconic railways in the world, running 217 km in a journey of 16 hours.

The journey begins at an altitude of 1187 meters in the city of Salta in Argentina, goes across Vale de Lerma, enters Quebrada del Toro and ends its trip at 4220 meters in the Viaduct of Polvorilla, also crosses 29 bridges, 12 viaducts and 21 tunnels.

The train to the clouds got its name from the many clouds that are frequently seen beneath the slopes of the mountains and even the bridges.

The rail route of the Bernina Express takes you through the incredible Alps, connecting the cities of Tirano and Chur, passing through 55 tunnels and 196 bridges. If you take this trip, you can still see places that will remain in your memory, such as the curve of Montebello with a view to the Bernina Mountain range, the Morteratsch Glacier, the three lakes: Lej Pitschen, Lej Nair and Lake Bianco, Alp Grüm and the Brusio spiral viaduct. During the summer it is possible to continue the journey from Tirano to Lugano with the bus line Bernina Express.

Price: starting from 8.60 euros

3. The Jacobite, Scotland

One of the most iconic images of the train “ The Jacobite ” takes us back to the films of the saga “Harry Potter” and immediately to the Hogwarts Express. The line runs for 134 kilometers and connects Mallaig and Fort William, both towns in the Scottish Highlands.

Here you can marvel at the most beautiful Scottish landscapes.

The train takes us through remote areas of magnificent natural beauty, starting with Ben Nevis, close to the tallest mountain in the Great Britain and passing by Arisaig.

The most important spots are the sea lochs of Nevis and Morar, as well as river Morar and also the deepest saltwater lake in Europe, Loch Nevis, as well as the valleys covered in luxurious green.

For this reason, the train has strategic stops in the most important points: Glenfinnan, Arisaig and Mallaig, the final destination, which includes a break for lunch and for a visit to the local commerce.

This route dates back to 1901, being described as one of the best rail journeys of the world.

The trip ends in Koblenz, where the river Moselle meets the Rhein.

5. Marrakesh Express

The most magical train that travels through Morocco is the night ONCF . The sunset seen from it is something unique as it departs from Tangier. After running down the Atlantic coast, it travels across the desert dunes, arriving just next to the Jemaa el Fnaa square in Marraquesh early in the morning. Here you can start your day marveling at the snake charmers and be dazzled by the whole range of colors that are present in objects and fabrics, which abound in the region’s traditional markets.

8. The Death Railway, Thailand

Many times, travelling goes beyond appreciating the surrounding beauty, here it is necessary to know the history of a country. Over ninety thousand workers, among them around sixteen thousand war prisoners, died during the construction of this railway between Bangkok and Myanmar, totalling about 415 kilometres of extension. The trip in the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express, in the only section of the track that one can travel these days, is extremely popular.

The cast iron bridge over the River Kwai and the winding rail trip that lasts two hours are all that remains from Thailand’s Death Railway.

Striking memories of a devastating history that hangs over the tropical Kanchanaburi jungle, considered by local residents as one of the most beautiful areas in the country.

Visit Kanchanaburi during a day, exiting Bangkok. There are ecologic inns and fluctuating cabins in the river that attract those who look into spending the night appreciating the natural reserves that the city has to offer.

A total of eight different itineraries, with a much more extended route, that connects the coast with the capital city. Among these options, the most renowned trip is the Nariz del Diablo (Devil’s Nose) train.

Many say that the Nariz del Diablo train in Ecuador owes its name from a mountain in the shape of a somewhat scary nose, and also to the fact that it is one of the most dangerous tracks in the world, because it comes down to five hundred meters of altitude in very little time. Besides that, at the moment of its construction, during the mid-nineteenth century, it was necessary to blast giant blocks of mountain rocks that surround the trails, and unfortunately, many men died during this period, which also justifies its name.

“Nariz del Diablo” is just one part of the route between Guayaquil and Quito, and consists of a steep mountain climb.

The train zigzags through a region of magnificent landscapes in the Andes. The train departs from the little town of Alausi and ends its trip in the little village of Sibambe, from where you can have a great view of the iconic mountain.

The train travels at a low speed, allowing passengers to enjoy the landscape. These days it is no longer allowed to climb to the roof of the coaches, although, one of them still has an observation deck.

Price: from 26 euros.

20 great train journeys to experience around the world

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: October 9, 2021

I am a train lover and believe there is no better way to travel – if I can take a trip on a train I am the happiest person in the world. There are so many advantages to travelling by train and for me it is the most relaxing way to explore a country, a great way to meet the locals and my number one choice of transport when possible.

As someone who loves traveling by train I am always on the lookout for great train journeys to add to my bucket list. There are so many spectacular train journeys to experience all over the world (and I have so many yet to do) so to find out more I asked fellow travel bloggers and train travel enthusiasts to contribute their favourites to this post.

The result is a list of some of the great train journeys and most scenic train rides in the world . If you need some train travel inspiration when planning your next trip this article has it in bucket loads!

Read about amazing train journeys including some of the world’s greatest railroads – great train journeys across Australia, must-do UK rail journeys, great train trips in Europe , American rail trips and more. Expect famous rail trips and perhaps a few rail journeys you weren’t aware of.

I have arranged the train trips in geographical locations. Which of these 20 train journeys do YOU think is the greatest rail journey in the world?

At the end of the post I have included a helpful map which shows the locations of these great railway journeys of the world.

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Linha Do Douro (Portugal)

The bernina express (switzerland), the glacier express (switzerland), the settle to carlisle line (england), the jacobite express (scotland), the flam railway (norway), the indian pacific, the tranzalpine, the rocky mountaineer, alaska railroad, the empire builder, the coast starlight (usa), wara wara or expresso del sur from oruro to uyani in bolivia, the dogu express, the reunification express, the hokkaido shinkansen, the golden chariot, ella to kandy sri lanka, colombo to jaffna in sri lanka, the trans-siberian, map showing the locations of these amazing train journeys, 6 of the best train journeys in europe.

by The Road is Life

The Linha do Douro railway line connects the city of Porto with Portugal’s UNESCO heritage wine region, the Douro Valley.

The Linha do Douro follows the Douro River upstream and finishes its journey in the small village of Pocinho, high up in the Alto Douro hills. If you’re thinking of taking a day trip from Porto , this scenic train journey is the perfect choice.

The Linha do Douro railway line begins at the São Bento railway station in Porto. With its beautiful blue and white tiled walls, this historic train station is a sight to behold.

It won’t take long until you begin to see the incredible landscapes of the Douro Valley. It’s easy to see why this train journey is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. Spectacular views of the terraced vineyards sloping down to the Douro river will continually leave you speechless as the train winds its way along the riverside.

Taking the train from Porto to Pocinho allows for flexibility to stop off at some of the other picturesque towns along the route. The complete journey from Porto to Pocinho takes around 3.5 hours total but you have the option to stop at Peso da Régua and Pinhão before it reaches its final stop. Tip: Make sure to sit on the right side of the train for the best views/photo opportunities!

A perfect day tripping option would be to take the train to Pinhão and then hop on a scenic boat cruise from there. River cruises leave daily from Pinhão at 10:30 and 14:00. This allows you to experience some of the most breath-taking sections of the river that cannot be reached by train.

Linha do Douro, Portugal

The Bernina Express is often named as one of the most beautiful train journeys In the world. ThIs scenic rail journey is certainly one of the most spectacular in Switzerland – a country which boasts of many amazing rail journeys.

Travel from Tirano in Italy to Chur in Switzerland (or vice versa) through the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscape. The train journey takes you over viaducts, through tunnels,  cross Swiss meadows and past mountain lakes and peaks.

The journey takes 4 hours during which you cover 144 kms, pass through 55 tunnels and cross 196 bridges. All this whilst enjoying the superb scenery for which Switzerland is so famous. The Alpine meadows, mountain peaks and stunning blue lakes will take your breath away.

The railway was built between the years of 1896 and 1904 and is operated by the Rhaetian Railway. Part of the route on the Bernina Express is shared with the equally famous Glacier Express – another beautiful train journey to experience when in Switzerland.

For a more comprehensive guide to travelling on the Bernina Express click to read my article all about our experience including lots of tips to ensure you make the best of this fabulous experience.

The Glacier Express travels between the alpine resort towns of Zermatt and St Moritz in an unforgettable train journey that crosses some of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps.

It is also a journey famously known as the “Slowest Fast Train in the World” due to the high-speed train having to wind through some of the most mountainous terrains in Europe. With an average speed of around 24MPH it takes roughly 7-8 hours to travel between the two resorts, including a quick stopover in Chur along the way.

But I will forever recommend the full journey as the 2 nd half of the Glacier Express, when travelling between Chur and St Moritz, is where the more iconic features of the train ride are found, such as the crossing on the Landwasser Viaduct (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The train ride itself is otherwise ridiculously scenic, yet rather expensive (as is Switzerland) however, the route is also covered on the Eurail and Interrail passes with only a small additional fee for seat reservation.

However, the train is rather luxury even in standard 2nd class coaches with panoramic window views in every car. The alpine resorts are also major attractions in themselves, and a night in Zermatt, with balcony views over the Matterhorn, is the perfect way to start the journey.

Taking the scenic route from England’s Yorkshire Dales to the Scottish borders , the Settle Carlisle line is an epic UK train journey through fells and dales.  If you think it’s just about the steam trains, then be aware that it’s possible to make the journey via regular scheduled services at normal train prices.

This is an exciting trip.  For a start, Settle is the kind of station you might think has disappeared, full of chatty stationmasters, pretty boxes of flowers and photographers eagerly awaiting the train.

Then there’s the journey itself, making the climb at a magic 1 in 100 gradients to Blea Moor by the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct.  You’ll pass through Dent Station, the highest mainline station in England , at 1150 feet above sea level.  Throughout the journey, walkers join and leave for adventures high in the Dales.  You’ll be very tempted to join them.

Tips?  Either side of the train has spectacular views.  And check if there are steam trains running on the day you visit, as you might get some beautiful pictures across the Ribblehead Viaduct from that epic climb.

One of the most picturesque railway journeys in the world is the Jacobite express in Scotland which runs between the towns of Fort William and Mallaig in the Western Highlands. It is also known as the Harry Potter train after being featured in some of the Harry Potter movies.

The area between Fort William and Mallaig is stunningly beautiful with some truly breathtaking scenery to admire. The train also crosses the 21 arch Glenfinnan Viaduct .

Before (or just after the train passes over the viaduct) it stops at Glenfinnan Station to enable passengers to disembark and enjoy the views over Loch Shiel. Pop into the visitor centre to find out about the area and the Jacobite Monument which is located behind the centre on the shores of the Loch.

The Jacobite Express

The Flam Railway is an absolute must-do train journey in Norway . With spectacular views over the Naeoryfjord, snow-capped mountains, waterfalls it is no wonder this train journey was described at the most spectacular train journey in the world by Lonely Planet in 2014.

The train takes 2 hours to travel the journey from Flam to Myrdal and back again. It is possible to alight at Myrdal and catch a train to Oslo or Bergen as Myrdal is a stop on the main Oslo-Bergen route. Along the way you will pass through deep gorges with steep mountain sides and spectacular waterfalls. The train stops along the route to view the impressive Kjosfassen waterfall .

In Flam don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Flam Railway Museum where you can learn more about the history of the train. Entrance is free.

I would then highly recommend catching a ferry along the fjord to Gudvangen. What could be better – a train ride followed by a boat trip along one of most spectacular fjords in Norway?

You can read more about what to see and do in Flam and Gudvangen in my comprehensive guide to the area.

Best train trips in Australia and New Zealand

I took my first journey on the Indian Pacific back in 1989. On that trip, I only travelled the first 20 hours of the three-day, 4352km journey, but I knew I wanted to come back and complete the full 65-hour route one day.

The train, named after the oceans it travels between, makes its transcontinental crossing, between Sydney and Perth once a week.

The route takes in the full variety of landscapes Australia has to offer from the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains to red outback sands. You travel through the stunning Flinders ranges and along the world’s longest straight stretch of tracks that run 297km across the Nullarbor Plain .

Unlike trains that buzz around Europe and parts of Asia at light speed, the Indian Pacific moves at a relatively slow 115km an hour. During your three-night, four-day trip your time is filled with as much or as little as you want.

There is no Wi-Fi onboard so it’s a great chance to switch off and connect with fellow passengers or if you prefer solitude start writing your memoirs!

Be sure to check out the audio track in your room, some of the stories and interviews are fabulous and a great way to get a good feel for the people of the outback.

I think one of the best things about the trip is that you get a chance to explore some of the towns along the way with off-train experiences. At each stop, you choose between 2-3 tours. We opted for a mining tour in Broken Hill and a wine tour of the Barossa Valley in Adelaide. There is also a special dinner under the stars at Australia’s biggest sheep station in WA.

Food is a huge highlight of this trip, and all drinks are included so bring your stretchy pants and polish up some of your best travel stories to share with your new friends over dinner.

The stops and experiences change depending on which direction you travel. We travelled west from Sydney to Perth. Check out some of the street art we uncovered in Perth on arrival.

Australia , with its enormous scale, has a huge range of landscapes. On the Ghan, you travel through many of them and it’s this constantly changing view out the window that makes this train journey so special.

The route goes between Darwin in the north and Adelaide in the south and covers about 3000 kilometres. It roughly follows the trails used by early European explorers who took camels driven by men from Afghanistan (hence the name ‘The Ghan’).

You can take the train in either direction and there are a few options for trips. I would recommend the Ghan Expedition , which is a three night and four day journey that stops along the way for passengers to do excursions. You’ll stop in Katherine and can choose to see sights like Nitmiluk Gorge, there’s a day in Alice Springs, and a day in Coober Pedy to see the incredible underground houses.

The excursions are included in the price, as is all the food and drink on board the train. The meals are not just excellent quality, they are also designed to reflect the local ingredients of the regions that you’re travelling through. The wines are also chosen carefully to showcase the best Australian producers.

Most of the rooms are Gold Class, which means a couch that turns into two single beds on top of each other, plus a private bathroom and a small cupboard for storage. There are also a few rooms that offer a Platinum Class.

The journey is not cheap, but you do get an incredible experience with an emphasis on quality. It’s a great way to see parts of Australia that are hard to access – plus get from one end of the continent to the other in style!

The TranzAlpine train travels from Christchurch , on the east coast of the South Island, to the rugged West Coast and is easily the most scenic train journey in New Zealand.

Perhaps my favourite time to take this epic journey is in the middle of winter.  The roads are often closed to cars, but from the warmth of your train carriage, you can wonder in the snowy mountains as you traverse through the Southern Alps.

The train itself is far from ordinary, with large legroom, sweeping vista views through their large windows, free commentary on a headset explaining the tales of our land and air conditioning ensuring a pleasant journey through winter or summer.

What many people do not know, is that you are able to stop along the way for only an extra $10 per stop.  This does not have to be a straight 5 hour journey across the island, why not build it into a couple of days?

Stop at Arthurs Pass and walk to Devils Punchbowl Falls , starting at the west end of the town.  This walk will take about an hour return for adults, or 90 minutes return for families with young children.

In the summer, the town of Moana is a perfect lakeside holiday spot.  Sitting on the shores of Lake Brunner, the lakeside beach can be surprisingly warm (much warmer than the sea) and is a lovely refreshing stop along the way.

Traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

You’ll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world aboard this luxurious train including the gorgeous Canadian Rocky Mountains as well as almost-guaranteed sightings of famous British Columbia and Alberta wildlife like bears (black, brown & grizzly) elk, and big horn sheep.

This two-day trip from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper is taken aboard a very well-appointed and comfortable train in either Gold Leaf or Silver Leaf service.  Overnights are in a local hotel (we stayed in Kamloops).  Seating is extremely comfortable with heated seats and the ability to recline while you gaze at the stunning scenery.

Service aboard the Rocky Mountaineer is exemplary, and the food is amazing!  There are hosts on every train that take care of every detail of the trip, keep you entertained and are a great source of local knowledge.  Snacks and drinks are regularly offered and I can attest that you will definitely not go hungry!

Gold leaf service guests are seated in a 2-level domed rail car that affords the most expansive views of the passing scenery.  You can also access the back of car and go outside for truly unobstructed views.  Gold leaf service is well worth the added expense if you can manage it.

One of the least-explored regions in the world, Alaska is often referred to as the last frontier. Traveling on the Alaska Railroad gives you a taste of that same northern wilderness , cutting directly south down the center of the country, from Fairbanks to Seward.

The railroad’s signature blue and yellow trains have become a popular backdrop for pictures, striking against the snowcapped mountains and deciduous forest. The train is a very enjoyable way to see much of the Alaskan wildlife , without having to pay for an expensive guide or spend time driving into a national park, if you have limited time or funds.

Your conductor points out every moose and reindeer they spot along the path, and over the course of a few hours you can see a large chunk of mother nature’s amazing creatures. I’d recommend using the Alaskan Railroad to head south to Anchorage after flying into a more northern airport, like Fairbanks.

Due to the intense cold weather Alaska experiences for most of the year, high season tickets during June to August book up fast, so try to reserve those several months in advance. When you’re heading south, be sure to grab a window seat on the righthand side and invest in a long range camera lens

Riding the Amtrak Empire Builder is a fantastic rail experience, while crossing the US by train! It’s Amtrak’s most popular long-distance route and may rail enthusiasts say it’s Amtrak’s most scenic route too!

The 2,206-mile trip takes 48 hours to venture through nine different states. This epic rail journey across the Northern US begins in the heart of downtown Chicago at midday. From there, the train chugs into Wisconsin, crosses the mighty Mississippi River into Minnesota over a series of trestles, and continues onward into the vastness of North Dakota’s Great Plains.

Yet the real highlight of this rail journey occurs in Montana. It’s on the second day that the Empire Builder slices through the Rocky Mountains , right alongside Glacier National Park. Passengers are treated to the spectacular sight of the namesake glaciers that sparkle atop the mountains.

On the third and final day, passengers wake up to even more beautiful vistas outside the train windows. This time, it’s the thick forests of Washington’s Cascade Mountain range. The Empire Builder then goes onto a dramatic finish with sweeping views of Puget Sound, before terminating in bustling Seattle.

The Empire Builder itself is a comfy train that includes a restaurant car, café car, and a passenger viewing lounge with panoramic windows. Given that there are two overnights during the itinerary, it’s best to book a sleeper roomette for the lengthy journey.

The Empire Builder train sitting in the panorama coach

The Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles is another popular train trip to take in North America. Catch the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle, enjoy a few days in the city before you trip on the Coast Starlight to Los Angeles.

The Coast Starlight service runs from Seattle to Los Angeles and covers a distance of 1377 miles along the way. The journey takes 35 hours and stops at 28 stations and passes through the Washington State, Oregon and onto California.

It is possible to alight the train along the way. We spent 3 days exploring San Francisco before hopping back onto the train to LA.

I highly recommend booking a roomette which includes all your meals during the journey. Take a small travel bag with you as your main luggage will stay below and there is not enough room to have big bags in the roomette. During the day the roomette consists of two seats facing each other. In the evening while at dinner your hostess will make the beds.

Head to the observation car with its panoramic windows to enjoy the scenery which includes the Cascade Range and long stretches of the Pacific Ocean shoreline.

One of Bolivia’s most visited attractions, the stunning  Uyuni Salt Flats , are easy to get to by train. The train departs from Oruro and goes to Uyuni. There, most hotels/hostels offer free pick up at the station.

The journey takes around 8 hours and it’s a beautiful one. It passes through villages, mountains, small salt flats, fields, and lakes. Watching the sunset through the window was a lovely experience.

They have two options, one is a trip during the day, and one is during the night. During the day trip, you can see all the beautiful landscape, have a snack, and watch 8 hours of Bolivian music videos and some dubbed action movies.

There are also two different trains, Wara Wara or Expresso del Sur. The price is almost the same, and the service too. The Expresso del Sur train was a little newer but other than that, they worked the same, and even the snacks were the same.

During the night, you can’t see anything at all but it’s quiet and peaceful. They give out blankets and pillows and the seats recline quite a lot so you can really sleep. Just make sure you keep your luggage with you.

Great train journeys in the Middle East

by Backpack Adventures

The Dogu express is one of the most scenic train journeys in the Middle east. The trip brings you from Ankara to Kars, the most northeastern part of Turkey, in 24 hours. It is one of the best ways to see the variety of landscapes in Turkey. The train crosses mountains, valleys and the Anatolian highlands with remote villages.

The train leaves Ankara around 6 pm. On time to see a beautiful sun set. The first part of the journey is in the dark though. The train is comfortable enough to get a good night of sleep before you wake up to some of Turkey’s most spectacular landscapes.

The train passes through parts of Turkey where few tourists come. These isolated regions in the Anatolian highlands are far from the coast and Istanbul, but they give insight into traditional Turkish life. The climate is harsh with cold winters and extremely hot summers. It’s a side of Turkey you don’t see or hear about often.

Turkish hospitality is waiting for you at the end of the line. Kars is a nice city with friendly people and great restaurants. Furthermore, Kars is a great place to start your trip in the remote north eastern part of Turkey near the border with Armenia and famous Mount Ararat.

One of the best ways to see Vietnam is aboard the Reunification Express . This route was established in 1975 when North and South Vietnam were reunited at the cessation of what is called the American War in these parts.

More than 40 years later, you can board the Reunification Express in Hanoi and travel south along the spine of the entire country, or do it in reverse from Ho Chi Minh City northbound.

We chose the Hanoi to Saigon train route and spent a couple of weeks along the route, stopping at destinations about a full day’s journey from each other. This led us to less frequently visited locations, and the lengthy amount of time we spent aboard the train itself provided a memorable and authentic introduction to one of the loveliest countries on the planet.

The train amenities are adequate provided you book first class, which is still an inexpensive bargain by Western standards. You’ll get an assigned, cushioned “soft seat” as opposed to a hard bench, and there will be hot and cold food served periodically by cart.

Seats are two wide on either side of the aisle. Note there is minimal luggage space and oversized luggage storage is hit or miss. Tickets can be reserved online at any number of third party outlets.

If you’re seeking an overnight aboard, note the arrangements will be in four-berth, coed compartments. Also, note: while the trains we rode had definitely seen better days, service was timely and gracious. We highly recommend this trip.

Since 2016 it has been possible to travel by high speed bullet train from Japan’s largest island of Honshu to the northern island of Hokkaido through a tunnel under the ocean.

The bullet train, called a ’ Shinkansen ’ in Japanese, travels on a new dual gauge line that took 11 years to complete from Aomori through to Hakodate.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen not only looks sleek and aerodynamic but can travel at speeds of up to 260 km per hour.  This speed is limited to 140 km/hr for the 54 kilometres through the Seikan tunnel which passes beneath the Tsugaru Strait.

It adds so much ease and comfort to the trip now taking only 4-hours to get to Hakodate from Tokyo and reducing the trip from Aomori to just one hour.

You can travel on the Hayabusa service using a couple of the Japan Rail passes and that makes it far more affordable for foreign visitors to get up to Hokkaido and experience the many things to do in Hakodate and beyond.

Japan has an efficient long-distance train network and the Shinkansen are particularly comfortable with good leg room, wide seats and power points.  While comfortable to relax, even sleep, the view beyond the window is constantly changing and as you approach Hokkaido whether it’s the lush green of summer, or the white snowy expanse of winter, it’s spectacular.

While on the train it is perfectly acceptable to bring a bag of your own food and drink or you can buy it from the trolley service on the train.  Platforms have both kiosks and vending machines with a good variety of snacks and meal options.

There are also plenty of other choices in and around the bullet train stations.  You might even try an ‘eki-bento’ a compact meal box option of Japanese dishes especially for train travel with each region having its own specialty version made with local produce.

The Golden Chariot is a luxury train in the south of India which has a few routes covering most of Karnataka as well as parts of Tamil Nadu, Goa and Kerala.

The train runs in the dry season and opens the doors to a part of India where there are no other luxury train journeys. The remoteness of some of the tourist stops along the way makes train travel a great way to see the area.

The train typical starts and ends in Bangalore and stops everyday at a different location. The main route stops at the stunning Mysore Palace, Kabini park for a safari, Belur, Pattadakal, Badami, Hampi, and Goa while the other route heads towards Chennai, the Kerala Backwaters, Pondicherry, Auroville and Madurai instead of Karnataka.

While the Golden Chariot is not the most luxurious of the trains in India , it is the only one which offers rooms with twin beds perfect for families or friends traveling together. Food is always amazing with two dining options, Indian and Western, and great onboard service.

I’ve been on a number of iconic train journeys in different parts of the world but if I had to pick a route that was both beautiful and famous then it would have to be the train journey from Ella to Kandy .

While a lot of people travel from Ella to Kandy by train , the actual scenic part of the train route lies between Ella and Nuwara Eliya. The classic blue train makes its way from one hill station to the next while crossing through both valleys and hills.

The valleys pan out in front of you and are filled with tea plantations which is what makes it so iconic. Another fun part of the ride for many people is the fact that the doors are open, and they can hang out of the train. For us it wasn’t a new concept because we have traveled by trains in India but for many it is a novelty and one that I urge people to be cautious when doing because it isn’t safe.

Getting a spot to sit during the journey can be tricky because of how crowded the compartments are. Vendors make their ways selling all sorts of Sri Lankan delicacies from fruits to fried snacks and hot tea. It is hard to resist the smells and you invariably find yourself snacking while you enjoy the view of beautiful Sri Lanka.

When you think of famous train journeys around the world you might not think of Jaffna straight away. And, actually, a lot of travellers may have never heard of Jaffna…

Jaffna is a small area in the north of Sri Lanka , an absolutely fascinating destination which is starkly different from the rest of the Island. Because of the civil war which rocked the region less than a few decades ago Jaffna still isn’t recognised as a tourist destination BUT I can safely say it should be!

And, it’s not just the destination which is so great, getting there is half the fun. You can take a train from Colombo the capital which takes about 10 hours (Sri Lankan time…) and is almost a highlight tour of the whole country.

This trains travels straight from the busy heart of the capital, through dense tea plantations in the highlands, into the cultural capital and then towards elephant territory further north. Keep your eyes peeled – if you travel during the migration period you could well see one!

Coming to your final destination you finally reach Jaffna, which is honestly even more memorable than the fantastic train journey. Prepare yourself for sizzling curries, spiritual temples and inquisitive locals!

In order to celebrate my graduation, it had to be the most amazing train journey in the world – The Trans Siberian . This 7 day train journey from Moscow to Beijing was an eye opener – a travel experience within itself. The trips takes you through amazing scenery including the Ural Mountains and Lake Baikal.

When we weren’t admiring the views, we were hopping off to get 50p beers and Vodka by the litre for around £1 and enjoying a drink with our bunk mates! It was a surprisingly sociable journey!

There are a few things to consider when you are booking your ticket. The Trans-Siberian starts in Moscow (there is an alternative route that starts from St Petersbourg), and the classic route ends up in Vladivostock.

We ended up in Beijing ready to enjoy the highlights of China . The Moscow-Beijing route is interesting, especially when you have to change your money on the border and they swap the drinks cart! Should you wish to travel through Mongolia, you need to book the Trans-Mongolian.

Also consider how many times you want to stop off to visit places along the way – the ticket straight through is much cheaper, but doesn’t allow you to stop off and visit local areas on the way – you can only hop off at stations. Also, think about whether it’s worth paying for a private cabin – we shared and we were glad for the friends that we made along the way.

There are a couple of tips that might come in handy for your Trans Siberian adventure. Take tea, noodles, anything that just needs hot water adding, because boiling water is readily available in each carriage. Also, remember that you can’t use the toilets while you are pulling into a station!

Sit back and enjoy the ride as we explore the most exciting train journeys in the world.

Sagano Scenic Railway (Kyoto, Japan)

The Sagano Romantic Train is easily one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Japan. The train route starts from Saga Station and runs through Hozu Gorge before ending at Kameoka Station. The journey only takes about 25 minutes, making it an ideal day trip from Kyoto .

Passengers on the Sagano Scenic Railway are treated to breathtaking views of dense forests and towering hills that surround the route, creating an atmosphere of natural wonder. The journey is particularly wonderful in the autumn season, when the trees turn a golden orange hue, as well as in springtime, when the sakura flowers paint the area in shades of pink.

Best of all, the train’s large windows offer convenient and unobstructed views of the picturesque scenery.

Glacier Express (Switzerland)

The Glacier Express is a train route that passes through the gorgeous Swiss Alps, offering a jaw-dropping view of snow-capped Alpine mountains and flowering plains, glaciers, and colorful Swiss villages. The journey starts from the town of St. Moritz, lasts about 8 hours, and ends in Zermatt. During the trip, the train passes over 291 bridges and 91 tunnels , including the particularly scenic Landwasser Viaduct, a stunning stone bridge that spans across a deep gorge and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

During the trip, passengers can indulge in delicious food prepared with seasonal products and drinks (including regional wines) in the dining car. If you plan to visit Switzerland and want to include Glacier Express in your itinerary, be sure to book in advance — this is one of the most popular activities for tourists!

The Ghan (Australia)

For those who prefer desert landscapes over snow-capped mountains, The Ghan train ride is the perfect option. This beautiful train journey through the heart of Australia spans over 2,900 kilometers and takes 4 days/3 nights to transport passengers from Adelaide to Darwin.

The train passes through the Australian outback, which means plenty of stunning views of the red desert landscape. This is an especially great opportunity to get acquainted with the unique flora and fauna of the continent, enjoy the architecture of small towns, and be rewarded with views of the ocean coast at the end of the journey.

Each day of the trip, passengers get to stop at interesting cities and locations, like Alice Springs, Uluru, and Coober Pedy, where expert guides give tours and explain the place in-depth.

The Ghan train offers several classes, from the comfortable Gold Service to the luxurious Platinum Service, which offers spacious ensuite cabins, fine dining, and personalized service.

Belmond Andean Explorer (Peru)

The Belmond Andean Explorer is a luxury train journey through the Peruvian Andes, offering breathtaking landscapes, such as the marvelous Lake Titicaca and Colca Canyon. The train starts its journey from Cusco, travels for 3 days, and ends in Arequipa.

Compared to other train journeys on this list, the Andean Explorer is quite young — it was launched in May 2017 and is South America’s first luxury sleeper train.

The cabins are equipped with comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, and large windows from which guests can enjoy beautiful views of the Peruvian countryside. There is also a restaurant car on the train that serves delicious Peruvian cuisine prepared by local chefs.

However, the real star of the show is the Picaflor Spa Car. Yes, that’s right — there’s a spa carriage right onboard the train. Guests can choose from a variety of blissful procedures, like massages and facial therapies.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (India)

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is not just a means of transportation, but an actual attraction that was even included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List .The railway was built during the British colonial era at the end of the 19th century, between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, as a way to transport commodities.

Nowadays, the train is very popular with tourists who wish to see India’s lush countryside.

The train has a dining car where travelers can enjoy a cup of authentic Indian tea and snacks while admiring the stunning views.

During the seven-hour journey, travelers can see ubiquitous tea plantations, the famous Kangchenjunga (the third-highest mountain in the world!), and several small picturesque villages. One of the highlights is the ride on the Batasia Loop, which surrounds the garden and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills.

8 Must-Do Train Journeys

8 Must-Do Train Journeys For Every Traveller

Kartikeya Shankar

Venice Simplon-Orient Express (England, France, Switzerland & Italy)

Start: London | End: Venice | Distance: 2,090km | Duration: 24 hours

In a world obsessed with breakneck speed, train travel offers a delightful rebellion. It's a chance to surrender to the rhythm of the rails, a slower pace that allows romance and wonder to seep into exploration. Furthermore, rail stands out as the most promising form of mass transportation in the fight against global warming. A 2022 report by the International Energy Agency highlights that while carrying 9 per cent of global passengers and 7 per cent of freight, train travel only accounts for 3 per cent of transport energy use.

The true magic, however, lies in the unique perspective a train grants the voyager. Unlike a fleeting car ride, a train unfolds the landscape like a storybook. Imagine gazing out the window as the train snakes through the Swiss Alps, revealing snow-capped peaks and charming chalets. Quaint villages, hidden valleys, and the very soul of a destination come into view, one frame at a time. Train journeys aren't just about reaching a point; they're about the in-between, the ever-changing scenery that becomes an experience in itself. The gentle rocking of the train lulls you into a state of tranquillity, where fellow passengers become companions, and the rhythmic clatter of wheels are a comforting lullaby. The slower pace allows you to truly disconnect and unwind, a luxury often forgotten in our fast-paced world. Train travel isn't merely transportation; it's a gateway to a slower, more immersive way of seeing the world.

Most magical train journeys around the world

Have you ever dreamed of travelling the world by train?

Or how about discovering the most magical train journeys around the world?

I remember watching White Christmas as a kid and seeing them travel by train all the way up to the fictional town of Pine Tree, Vermont.

It had me hooked on the concept or train travel! Growing up in the states, this is simply not the way any of us would ever travel.

Now as a full time travelling adult, I am grateful to fulfil the dreams of younger me by getting to travel on some of the absolutely amazing, most magical train journeys around the world.

I have so many wonderful train journeys on my list and I cannot wait to explore and adventure to as many as I can.

The criteria for a magical train journey includes: incredible scenery, destinations and a once in a lifetime onboard experience.

As I make my way around the world finding the best and most magical train journeys, I’ll continue to add to this list, but for now, read on for some of my favourites.

world famous train journeys

The Glacier Express train journey through the snowy Swiss mountains

St. moritz to zermatt, switzerland.

The Glacier Express in Switzerland is a serious bucket list travel moment… and so was buying the most  expensive  train journey tickets of my life.

As a massive fan of winter and all things that remind me of real life Narnia or Hogwarts, it should come as no surprise that booking what is easily described as a magical wonderland journey through the Swiss mountains.

Well, seats in the Excellence Class on the Glacier Express is right up there in my top “must-do” things in my lifetime.

Excellence Class seats on the train guarantee a window seat and stunning panoramic views.

You will be travelling over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels between St. Moritz and Zermatt and having a window seat to witness it all is imperative. Of course, a seven course meal including wine with each course doesn’t hurt either.

So our grand total for two tickets from Chur to Brig in Excellence Class was CHF 884.00 or £720.

I won’t pretend this isn’t an expensive experience. But that’s why they call it bucket list travel, after all? It’s an entire experience and it’s a treat.

Something you wouldn’t do every time you go somewhere, but something very special that I will always remember.

And don’t forget, Excellence Class is not the only option. There are several difference carriages along the Glacier Express, so you can still journey along for slightly cheaper ticket prices.

It is still an expensive journey either way, so we decided to splurge with our tickets on this occasion.

You can learn all about how to book The Glacier Express train in my detailed blog post here.

best train journeys around the world

The famous Hogwarts Express train journey

The jacobite steam train, scottish highlands , scotland.

Did you know that you can actually buy tickets and ride on the Hogwarts Express in real life?

So it’s not exactly called The Hogwarts Express in the real world.

Located in the Scottish Highlands, in Fort William, there is a train line called West Coast Railways who run an old school train service featuring “The Jacobite” steam train.

In fact, the Harry Potter movies filmed using The Jacobite steam train as the Hogwarts Express!

And along the journey, you will even pass other famous Harry Potter film locations, like  the famous “bridge” the Glenfinnan Viaduct  as well as Loch Eilt which is the final resting place for Albus Dumbledore.

I would recommend buying the  Standard  seats.  Standard seats on The Jacobite cost roughly £50  per ticket (this is what we had for our journey.

They also offer First Class Tickets (£72 per ticket) and even those with a private table which are £180 (total for two tickets).

Lastly, you can book out the Compartments which are very Harry Potter-esque train compartments that you can book out entirely. Think what you see in the first few films when they board the train, those private sliding door style compartments.

But truthfully, all of the carriages feel just like you’re stepping straight onto The Hogwarts Express!

So I think it’s best to go for the cheaper option. It’s not like Harry, Ron and Hermione were travelling to Hogwarts in First Class after all.

You can learn all about how to book The Jacobite Steam Train in my detailed blog post here.

caledonian sleeper

An overnight sleeper train on the Caledonian Sleeper

London euston to scotland.

My very first experience on an overnight train ! The novelty of doing this is so beyond incredible. I cannot recommend this experience enough for those after unique travel journeys.

From London Euston to Fort William, the Caledonian Sleeper is an overnight train that takes you on an adventure up through the United Kingdom.

I had the pleasure of working with the Caledonian Sleeper on a journey from London to the Scottish Highlands.

We boarded the Caledonian Sleeper and found our Club Twin room. The rooms are cosy! The beds are also ridiculously comfortable which is worth nothing for your comfort.

The train journey up to Fort William takes 13 hours.

However, there are also many stops along the way or routes that are available to take. You could get the train from London to Edinburgh, Inverness, Fort William, Glasgow, or Aberdeen.

Throughout the journey depending on you room, you will also have access to the club car. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal and watch the world go by.

Pro tip? Book your travel for the summertime! Because it’s light so late out during peak summer months, you can see so much more of the scenery.

The Scottish Highlands are absolutely breathtaking. My advice would be to wake up early and take the sight in with coffee and breakfast in the club car. We booked our breakfast very early so we could soak it all in.

Happy train travels everyone!

Until next time, with another train journey adventure to be had and another destination to explore…

8 great rail journeys to take across the USA

Jan 29, 2024 • 6 min read

wonderful train journey

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely sightseeing experience.© Alex Potemkin/Getty Images

There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England ,  here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's  Amazing Train Journeys .

A white male passenger takes in the New Mexico desert landscape at sunset from the Amtrak train.

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes along a track through hilly terrain en route to Los Angeles

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

A train coming into a station in an idyllic leafy setting

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

A train passing through a green landscape with blue skies

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

The northbound Amtrak Downeaster at the train station in Brunswick as seen from the front

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

A locomotive decorated with the image of the road runner

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

The Jefferson Memorial at sunset seen through some trees during the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.
