#1 Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo many people consider the best zoo in Britain. It is a non-profit organization that aims not only for visitors but also to participate in serious research projects. 

The zoo and a conservation centre are actively working in the following areas: rare breeds and endangered species, research in the field of ethology (animal behaviour), and active participation in various wildlife conservation programs worldwide.

The first penguins appeared here in 1914. The first king penguin chick was hatched at the zoo in 1919, the first ever captive penguin chick. One of the most colourful and popular events of the day is the penguin parade.

Besides all the animals of popular types, here you can see Asiatic lions, sun bears, and giant pandas, precisely, the two giant pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang.

#2 Chester Zoo

Chester zoo is one of the best zoos in the UK. On the site, optimal animal conditions have been created – from a rain jungle for elephants to a vast indoor hangar for primates.

The zoo is home to more than 27000 animals, about 400 species. They live free here in a natural habitat. 

For the conservation of endangered species was created a special program. Here you can see black rhinos, painted dogs, Asian elephants, Sumatran orangutans, and birds ─ Malayan Kalao, crowned cranes, etc.

#3 Paignton Zoo

Paignton zoo is one of the best zoos in England and the best zoo in Devon. It was founded in 1923 by millionaire Herbert Whitley. The Wild Planet Trust, a wildlife conservation and education charity, own it. Since 2001, the park has been reconstructed, and now the entire infrastructure of the zoo meets European standards.  

On an area of 32.5 hectares, 2.5 thousand animals live in natural conditions, divided by habitat zones. Endangered black rhinos, ostriches, and cheetahs live in the Savannah; various birds live in the Desert House; gibbons, lions, Sumatran tigers, etc., live in the forest thicket. Red pandas, baboons, a giant tortoise and many others live in the Primley zone.  

#4 ZSL London Zoo

London Zoo is one of the best zoos in the UK and the biggest zoo in London. It was founded for scientific research and only later opened to the public.

ZSL London zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo. About 17000 incredible animals of 755 species make up the largest British zoological collection. The first African hippopotamus and elephant were brought in England to this zoo.  

The territory of one of the oldest zoos in the world is divided into habitats of different representatives of the fauna. Also, it has the best reptile zoo UK, namely, a reptile house with the largest lizard in the world! Here you will find western lowland gorillas, the huge penguin pool and the home of the monitor lizard from Komodo Island, a butterfly forest, and an insect house. #5 ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is located next to Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Whipsnade Zoo is the biggest zoo in the UK. It is formerly known as Whipsnade Wild Animal Park. The Zoological Society of London owns this zoo. ZSL is a charity organization committed to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.

Make sure to dedicate at least half a day to the visit. Here you can see an endangered red panda, wild horses, and even an aquarium with sea creatures. You can move around the territory of Whipsnade Zoo between the paddocks by car or by the narrow-gauge railway ─ Jumbo Express.

#6 Longleat safari park

Longleat safari park was opened in 1966 and became the world’s first safari park outside of Africa. It is located on the territory of the historic estate of Longleat. During a trip through the park, tourists are invited to observe the natural behaviour of such wild individuals as wolves, lions, giraffes, white rhinos, zebras, leopards, and tigers. 

Longleat safari theme park is home to 500 species of animals – giant otters, Cuban crocodiles, porcupines, cockatoos, iguanas, armadillos, cheeky monkeys, etc. 

In the best safari park UK, you can test your orienteering skills in the UK’s largest hedge maze of sheared yew trees. 

#7 Welsh Mountain Zoo, Colwy

Welsh mountain zoo is a wonderful zoological garden near Colwyn Bay in Conwy, Wales. Wildlife lover and naturalist Robert Jackson opened the zoo on May 18, 1963. The zoo covers an area of 37 acres. It hosts sea lions, otters, snow leopards, owls, chimps, flamingos, and many more. Additionally, the conservating zoo provides fantastic views of the area. Due to the steep hills, it is not very convenient to visit the zoo with toddlers, but if you have older children, it is a great place to spend the whole day. Don’t worry about the food, it has a nice café onsite.

#8 Colchester Zoo

Colchester zoo is one of the top zoos in the UK. It is the best in Europe. The animals at the zoo are treated well and have good homes. The zoo staff make sure to create the appropriate conditions for each animal based on its needs and wishes. After all, when the animals are happy, it is pleasant to watch them. 

Colchester Zoo is in the southeast of England. It was founded in 1963 on 24 hectares of land with hills, ponds and thickets, and 250 species of animals. 

Rare and endangered species of animals live in Colchester Zoo. Among them are white rhinos, Amur tigers, anteaters and even spider monkeys. The pride of the Colchester Zoo is its 24m long underwater tunnel, one of the largest in Europe! The zoo has a lot of land and marine animals (sea lions, penguins, turtles).

#9 Howletts wild animal park

Howletts Wild Animal Park is the best zoo near London. In 1957 it was a private zoo founded by John Aspinall, an animal fan, and only in 1975 it open to the public.

Howletts wildlife park is known for breeding rare and endangered species. It has been owned by The John Aspinall Foundation since 1984. John Aspinall was buried in the park near the main entrance to the family mansion, opposite the corral with bison. Next to the grave is a memorial with a mention of the zoo’s founder.

The zoo is home to the largest breeding herd of African elephants in the UK. It also contains one of the world’s largest populations of the lion-tailed macaque. But the park rightfully received its celebrity for the world’s largest family group of western plains gorillas.

#10 Marwell Zoo

Marwell animal park, a good zoo in the UK, hosts lots of exotic and endangered animals. The territory of Marwell zoo covers 140 acres of beautiful land and is owned by the global conservation charity Marwell Wildlife. 

The tropical house of Marwell zoo has many beautiful birds and butterflies. You can see adorable snow leopards, red pandas, white rhinos, Rothchild’s giraffes, and Amur tigers. The zoo also has an interesting Lego dinosaur model display which is especially loved by kids. For the convenience of visitors, there is a small tractor train, which has an additional cost, but the money goes for animals’ care.

#11 Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Yorkshire wildlife park is a unique wildlife park that opened in 2009 in South Yorkshire. This popular zoo was founded as a centre for protecting animals and animal welfare from conserving biodiversity. It is one of the best zoos in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire wildlife park has more than 400 animals (about 70 species) of the most amazing animals on the planet. Here you can see polar bears, lemurs, giraffes, tigers, etc. The cherry on the pie for kids is a great Dino Park! Educational courses for children, and great animal shows, are held here. 

#12 Cotswold wildlife park

The Cotswold Wildlife Park is one of England’s most popular wildlife parks with natural beauty.

The park is divided into four climatic zones representing certain habitat conditions. During its existence in the nature reserve, it was possible to collect and preserve a huge collection of endangered plants and animals. There are more than 200 species of animals, more than 130 species of birds and several thousand plants in the park. Therefore, the entire territory is called Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens Burford. 

For the convenience of visiting the park, a light train is provided, which slowly moves along the monorail and allows you to see everything to the maximum. The fauna here is collected from all over the world and is replete with exotic species. There are many herbivores in the park, such as giraffes and camels. 

#13 Belfast Zoo

Belfast zoo is located on the northeastern slope of Mount Cavehill, which offers an incredible view of the city.

The total area of Belfast Zoo is 22 hectares. About 300,000 visitors, both locals and tourists, come to the zoo every year. The area has steep hills, so make sure to take comfortable shoes. In 2011, a cub of the southern pudu was born here – the tiniest deer, up to 43 cm tall and weighing up to 13 kg. There are four such deer in Belfast. At the moment, only 70 pudu are kept in zoos around the world.

#14 Port Lympne Reserve

Port Lympne Reserve is located in Hythe, a wildlife sanctuary with a safari-themed hotel complex. The reserve is divided into two sections: a park safari for truck rides in such zones as “Africa”, “Asia”, and “South America”; and a park with enclosures for hiking.

The park’s collection includes such animals as Siberian tigers, Malayan tapirs, African hunting dogs, giraffes, etc. You can visit the gorillarium (“Monkey Palace”) and the “Forest of Dinosaurs”, where the exhibits of the latter are collected in full size. Also, there is a souvenir shop with amazing things and different cafes which offer snacks and drinks. 

#15 Dudley Zoo

Dudley zoo is one of the most interesting zoos in the UK. It is located next to the ruins of 11th-century Dudley Castle. The zoo hosts many endangered animals, exotic creatures, big cats, and a reptile house. The hill can be reached by cable car or train. Both are included in the entrance price. Besides the great variety of animals, there is a fun activity called a ghost walk. You can be part of the group for a small tour where you will hear ghost stories about the castle. If you visit the zoo in good weather, there are plenty of nice places for a picnic for all the family. 

#16 Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo

Folly Farm Adventure Park is considered the best family holiday destination in the UK for many people. Founded in 1988 by farmer Glyn Williams and his wife, Ann. A little later, their children joined the development of the zoo. The family is actively involved in the park’s development and sets high educational and entertainment goals.

A tour of the farm will be not only interesting but also very informative. On site, you can study in detail a combine harvester, a tractor and a milking system for cows. In the zoo, you can meet friendly farmyard animals such as donkeys, sheep, pigs, horses, chickens and many others.

Folly Farm Adventure Park is fun for the whole family, both indoors and outdoor play areas. For children, there is a huge indoor children’s attraction, its own racetrack. Pirate Park invites all fans to dream up. This attraction is for you if you want to be the old pirate Jolly Roger. There is Dragon Park with slides, swings, and funny carousels for the youngest visitors.

#17 Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling

Blair Drummond Safari Park is located near the city of Stirling and is the only place in the country where you can see elephants and giraffes. Many animals from Asia and Africa live on its territory, including rare endangered species.

The Safari Park was built in 1970 and currently occupies an area of 49 hectares. It consists of 3 animal reserves and 2 children’s recreation areas with various attractions. In addition to wild animals, you can also see farm animals such as goats, sheep, llamas, Vietnamese pigs and miniature wallabies in the park.

In the middle of the bustling capital is this incredible zoo. With over 14,000 animals across 3 zones, it’s no wonder this is one of the best zoos in the UK.

Edinburgh Zoo

Of course Edinburgh Zoo is one of the top zoos in the UK. Not only is this one of our favourite cities to visit, the zoo is absolutely amazing too.

The two giant pandas – Yang Guang and Tian Tian – first came to Edinburgh Zoo in 2011, and they have been drawing tourists from all over ever since.

The zoo is also famous for having the world’s only knighted penguin (we’re not kidding). His name? Sir Nils Olav.

Longleat Safari Park

Check out the UK’s number one safari park at Longleat. As one of the oldest zoos in England, Longleat now has a zoo and attractions and their famous drive through safari. 

One of our earliest childhood memories is watching the mischievous monkeys jumping on top of our car. It’s endless fun, although they can be a little destructive! Check out lions and tigers, or jump out of the car and enjoy the walking safari.

Bristol Zoo Gardens

At just 12 acres, Bristol Zoo is one of the smallest zoos in the UK, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the best! The zoo is home to 450 different species, including 50 mammals.

From gorillas and ring-tailed lemurs, to African penguins and Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo, there’s so many fun and unique animals to spot. Bristol Zoo is also home to two asiatic lions which you can get very close to!

I love walking through the butterfly forest, spitting all the different varieties of butterfly, and hoping they might just land on my hand. There is even an aquarium with over 50 different species of fish. Can you spot the stingray and river turtles in the underwater tunnel?

What are Safari Parks?

Safari parks are drive-through attractions rather than traditional zoo experiences. They mimic that of a wild safari in exotic destinations like Africa.

At some parks, you drive your car around the safari; some have trucks provided for you, and others have larger vehicles with a driver where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the safari.

Often, it’s best to bring your car because many UK safari parks are drive-around only. Many UK safari parks also have on-site accommodation if you’re travelling further afield.

We’ve taken the kids to a few over the years and we find a day trip to a safari park a great way to blend education and entertainment.

Best Safari Parks: UK

Safari parks in the UK are some of the best available in Europe . You can be near to animals you wouldn’t usually see in the UK.

The animals may get up close to your car window rather than you viewing them from a viewing area.

Here’s the roundup of the best safari parks in the UK:

1. Woburn Safari Park

Location: Crawley Rd, Woburn, Ridgmont, Bedford MK43 0TU

Distance from Central London: 48.7 miles

Woburn Safari Park is an excellent option for a day trip from London.

Enjoy being together as a family as you enjoy repeat circuits of the Woburn safari drive.

The driving section is ONLY accessible in your vehicle, and you won’t be allowed to enter on foot.

See animals like the Przewalski’s horse, North American bison, and Bactrian camel. Continue to the Savannah Grasslands to see the Southern white rhinos and Ankole cattle.

There is also a foot safari area. There are walk-through enclosures and close encounters with meerkats, elephants, and more, as well as daily keeper talks.

For children of 10 and up (and a minimum of 1.4m tall), try the Go Ape high ropes challenge. Let loose in the treetops and see animals roaming below.

Look out for special school holiday events – Peppa Pig, Hey Duggee and Bluey often visit the safari park.

2. Chessington World of Adventures Resort

Location: Surrey, KT9 2NE

Distance from Central London: 17.3 miles

Chessington Safari Resort is part of the larger Chessington World of Adventures theme park, zoo, aquarium and safari park all rolled into one. There are over 1,000 animals to spot and over 40 rides.

The safari attraction is the ZUFARI ride into Africa. You can have a giraffe feeding experience from a safari truck.

This experience is for kids aged 5+ and can be booked for groups of two to eight (and shared with other guests). You will also need to purchase an entry ticket on top of this experience.

Chessington World of Adventures also has the on-site Azteca and Safari Hotel and the explorer glamping experience. Staying overnight will give you 20% off VIP animal experiences like the Giraffe Safari.

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

Location: Aldington Rd, Lympne, Hythe CT21 4LR

Distance from Central London: 65.8 miles

Port Lympne Safari Park is huge. You’ll have the chance to spot over 650 animals across 600 acres and learn about conservation efforts like the breeding programmes.

Safaris are included in your entry ticket. You can go on a truck safari or book a ranger-led encounter.

If you upgrade to the ranger encounter, you will go offroad and have the opportunity to hand-feed some animals, like rhinos and giraffes.

Every visit supports The Aspinall Foundation’s global conservation efforts.

If you need a weekend away, the stay options include the lavish Lion Lodge and the Pinewood Pods.

From the roars of lions to the calls of tropical birds, Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire is an extraordinary experience beyond the typical day out.

The first drive-through safari in the UK introduces you to various animals, including monkeys and cheetahs.

Main attractions include the deer park, the woolf wood, the African village and the big game park. Other attractions on site include a giant hedge maze and jungle boat rides.

You can upgrade your visit with a VIP tour, such as the tiger feeding experience or the immersive private safari.

Combine this with a visit to the on-site Longleat House, and you have a day full of wonders.

There are also walk-through areas like the reptile house, penguin cove, and twilight cove. You can self-drive around the safari or book a guided minibus tour.

Walk-through sections are also at the park. Enjoy the giraffe viewpoint on the African walking trail.

Younger kids will love Giggly Park, an exciting children’s play zone. Your admission also grants you a feast of daily shows, from Sea Lion spectacles to lemur talks.

Whether you self-drive or hop on the park’s Baboon Bus, you’re in for a treat.

Don’t miss the thee monkey jungle, with its cheeky baboons, which promises laughs and delightful interactions.

But the experience continues after the drive. The Foot Safari beckons next.

Walk through woodlands and encounter mischievous meerkats, tall giraffes, and cheeky Sea Lions.

Did you know that zoos have royal roots? The history of modern zoos began with the concept of menageries: private collections of exotic animals reserved for the elite. As interest in natural history grew during the 18th century, these collections evolved into early modern zoological gardens, or zoos. In 1828, London Zoo officially opened its gates as the UK’s first zoo, and first scientific zoological collection in the world. 

How many zoos are there in the UK? 

Today, the UK boasts around 330 licensed zoos (including aquariums), so chances are there’s one near you. From the quaint one-acre Shaldon Wildlife Trust to the enormous, open spaces of Whipsnade Zoo and Longleat Safari Park, there’s an incredible variety of wildlife attractions to explore.

What’s the difference between a zoo and a wildlife park?

There isn’t really! A zoo is any place where typically wild animals are kept in captivity and are put on public display, including aquariums . Some zoos choose to use ‘wildlife park’ in their name – these are often found in rural locations and feature more spacious enclosures than traditional urban zoos. However, plenty of exceptions exist, such as the 600-acre, out-of-town Whipsnade Zoo. Safari parks are another type of zoo, allowing visitors to drive through and get up close to animals from the comfort (and safety!) of their own vehicle.

Widely renowned as the best zoo in the UK and one of the best on the continent, it’s hardly surprising that makes our list. And it’s easy to see why: for starters, Chester boasts the biggest collection in the country – housing over 27,000 animals spanning 500 species – so everybody’s bound to find their favourites. Perhaps the most exciting exhibit is ‘Islands’, which whisks visitors away to southeast Asian habitats teeming with some of the world’s most fascinating species. As you seek out tigers, sun bears and macaques, you’ll feel like a real intrepid explorer. And to enhance the expedition experience, you can even take a boat trip around the islands, included with your entry.

Other must-sees include Realm of the Red Ape, home to orangutans and other rainforest residents, and Spirit of the Jaguar, where you can come face-to-face with these iconic big cats. We could go on, and you’ll certainly need an entire day here to make the most of your visit. It's no wonder Chester Zoo has earned its place as the UK's best and most-visited wildlife attraction. Beyond offering an exceptional day out for the entire family, Chester stands out thanks to their remarkable conservation efforts. While this list is in no particular order, if we could recommend only one zoo, it would have to be Chester.

Standing in the heart of the capital on a corner of Regent’s Park, London Zoo is steeped in history. Approaching its 200th anniversary, it’s the UK’s first zoo and world’s oldest scientific zoo and retains plenty of its historic charm. This includes the Grade II-listed giraffe house – one of the oldest buildings in the world still housing its intended resident species. London offers multiple walkthrough enclosures where you can observe animals without a barrier, including the charming Victorian Blackburn Pavilion, a tranquil haven for exotic birds, and Rainforest Life, a living rainforest home to toe-toed sloths and several species of small primate. While certain large species are no longer housed here, family favourites such as lions, tigers and gorillas remain. Excitingly, a new reptile and amphibian house is due to open in 2024, where you’ll be able to spot Chinese giant salamanders – the world’s biggest amphibian.

Whipsnade Zoo

London Zoo’s sprawling sister site, Whipsnade Zoo , stretches across an impressive 600 acres of Bedfordshire countryside. It’s the biggest zoo in the UK and its spacious enclosures house many of the larger species that London Zoo lacks space for, including brown bears, white and one-horned rhinos and a herd of Asian elephants. An exciting new addition for 2024 is ‘Monkey Forest’, a woodland home for four southeast Asian forest species. Although Whipsnade isn’t a safari park, visitors can opt (for an additional fee) to drive and park around the expansive site, a welcome respite for tired legs. You can also hop aboard the Great Whipsnade Railway to experience the magic of a steam-hauled journey around the grounds. And when you’re not busy admiring the animals, take a moment to soak up the panoramas of the surrounding rolling hills.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Much like Whipsnade Zoo, the 260-acre Yorkshire Wildlife Park , located just outside Doncaster, boasts expansive, open spaces. But on a smaller scale, their meticulous attention to detail shines through in the faithfully recreated habitats spanning the diverse landscapes of our planet, from the sweeping savannahs of Africa to the enchanting bamboo forests of the Himalayas. It’s worth a visit for the polar bears alone – their home here stands as the biggest polar bear centre outside Canada. Designed to evoke the feel of a tundra in summer, Project Polar invites you to watch the bears explore, forage and play-fighting. Visitors first embark on a scenic safari-style drive around the main reserve, looking out for deer, bison and elk from the comfort of your own car. Once parked up, you can then explore the walk round area on foot to encounter wolves, Arctic foxes and some of the only polar bears in the UK.

Oxfordshire’s Cotswold Wildlife Park effortlessly blends a zoo with beautiful parkland and enchanting gardens, offering an idyllic setting for its 1,500 resident animals. This unique attraction incorporates quintessentially English architecture, from the gorgeous Walled Garden to the iconic view of rhinos grazing against the backdrop of the manor house. The recently completed lion house is home to endangered Asiatic lions, while the reptile house boasts one of the biggest and most intriguing collections of reptiles in the UK. There’s also a quaint narrow-gauge railway around the park, and an adventure playground where kids can conquer treehouses up to a bird’s eye view of the park. Amid this picturesque setting, delightfully spacious lawns invite visitors to unwind with a picnic. And guess what? You can even bring along your dog – this is the only large zoo in the UK that welcomes these four-legged guests.

And here’s an idea: why not combine your visit with a trip to Crocodiles of the World, just ten minutes down the road? As the UK’s only dedicated crocodile zoo, it hosts the best collection of crocs in the UK, along with other intriguing reptiles and even mammals like the clouded leopard. It’s also one of only four zoos in the country where you can spot a Komodo dragon, the world’s largest living lizard.

Colchester Zoo

If you’re keen to tick off big mammals, Colchester Zoo is a particularly good pick. This Essex attraction has done a fantastic job at capturing habitats across the globe, from the Australian outback to the iconic plains of Africa. Elephant Kingdom takes pride of place as one of the zoo’s most impressive enclosures, located right next to a recreated savannah home to white rhinos, giraffes and zebras. You can also meet both Amur tigers and Amur leopards – respectively, the largest and rarest big cats in the world. Other highlights include sun bears, sea lions and an adorable family of smooth-coated otters. Mammals aside, there’s the chance to spot Komodo dragons, a fabulous rainbow lorikeet walkthrough, and one of only two slender-snouted crocodiles in the UK. There are plenty of fantastic spots to stop off and refuel, too, making Colchester a great pick for families.

Although it may be the smallest attraction on our list, Exmoor Zoo more than makes up for its modest footprint thanks to its fascinating, rather unusual collection of animals. Here, you can encounter lesser-known species you wouldn’t normally see elsewhere, from the prehistoric-looking shoebill to a pair of fearless honey badgers. The zoo is home to a particularly interesting collection of wild cats, including caracals, margays and sand cats, as well as the elusive ‘Exmoor beast’ – one of only two black leopards on show in the UK. The zoo’s smaller scale makes for a more intimate experience, allowing visitors to spend less time walking from exhibit to exhibit and more time observing and learning about the animals, without the crowds often found in larger zoos.

Paignton Zoo

If you’re holidaying on the English Riviera, make sure to include Paignton Zoo in your itinerary. Another Devon-based attraction to make our list, this zoo recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Among familiar favourites such as giraffes, Sumatran tigers and black rhinos are a host of less common animals, from Himalayan takins in a limestone quarry to one of the UK’s only echidnas. Paignton is also a brilliant spot for primate lovers, thanks to its islands of orangutans, gorillas, lar and pileated gibbons and howler monkeys. Don’t miss the iconic Baboon Rock, home to a long-running troop of baboons – although a brand-new home for them is currently in the works. And, if you’re eager to top off your day with a trip to the beach, the coast is just a ten-minute drive away – don’t forget your bucket and spade…

Take a drive on the wild side, passing through the territory of majestic lions, tigers and white rhinos; enter the realm of mischievous monkeys only if you dare. No car? No problem: simply hop on the Safari Bus for a guided tour (additional fee applies). Longleat isn’t limited to drive-through adventures, though, as you can also explore the stunning grounds by foot, water and rail. A pit stop lets you stretch your legs as you soak up spectacular views across the East African reserve – home to giraffes and zebras – and get amongst lemurs in a walkthrough experience. Back at the main square, a walking safari introduces you to all kinds of furry, scaly and feathery critters, including rainbow lorikeets you can hand-feed, a lovable hairy-nosed wombat and England’s only koalas. You can also set off on a boat safari, cruising past a band of gorillas and the lake’s resident hippo, or take a scenic woodland ride on board the narrow-gauge railway. There’s plenty more to do at Longleat, from touring the Elizabethan stately home and formal gardens to getting lost in Britain’s biggest maze.

While not technically in the UK, we thought Jersey Zoo was well worthy of a mention. Founded by renowned conservationist Gerald Durrell, this Channel Island attraction is primarily devoted to keeping and breeding some of the world’s most endangered species. The beautifully landscaped park is home to a troop of western lowland gorillas, a Sumatran orangutan family, and an entire house of aye-ayes; it’s also the only place where you can see a black lion tamarin outside of Brazil. Another highlight is the lovely woodland area where visitors can monkey around with free-roaming marmosets and tamarins.

1/7 Blair Drummond Safari Park, Scotland

With wildlife reserves, an adventure park and oodles of attractions, you’ll find fun for all the family at Blair Drummond. Much more than a tourist attraction, this safari park is a unique space used to inspire, educate and energise kids and adults.

With a primary role of conservation, Blair Drummond recognises that habitats in this country are just as fragile as exotic ones, which is why they ensure their grounds are maintained and looked after to allow plants and animals to flourish.

Blair Drummond is home to over 30 different species, with a mix of the usual suspects and a few unexpected animals like shetland ponies, wallaby, otters, bison and camels – you’re guaranteed to go cooing and awing all day.

Your park ticket includes unlimited use of the park as well as so much more. You and the kids will have access to animal presentations, ‘meet the keeper’ talks, a boat safari around chimp island, wildlife reserves, petting farm, pedal boats, adventure play area for the kids and free car parking.

No doubt after a few hours of exploring, you’ll all start to feel those hunger pangs. There are plenty of tasty options to sink your teeth into. You’ll find bbqs, an on-site restaurant, two snack bars, doughnut stalls, sweet shops and of course, no park would be complete without an ice-cream stand.

The park also has a lockable kennel for just £1, so no need to leave the pooch at home.

2/7 Longleat Safari Park, Warminster

Longleat Safari Park first opened its doors in 1966. For the first time, animals were able to move freely across hundreds of acres of land and more importantly, interact naturally and unaided. Since its opening Longleat’s approach has remained the same – ethical, educational, sustainable and fun.

Longleat is home to over 100 species, from rhinos to wildebeests, this safari park has a surprise around every corner. For an extra treat, take the kids to meet parrots at daily educations shows. Be amazed as expert keepers tell you more about these incredible creatures and how you can all look after the world they live in. Not only are parrots eagerly awaiting to meet you, if you fancy holding a snake or a spider, onsite rangers will make sure you get a personal introduction.

The team behind Longleat believe in the importance of conservation of both animals and their environments, so they ask visitors to respect all the habitats and the environment around them.

If you need to stop and refuel, you’ll have no trouble finding a kiosk nearby a variety of hot and cold drinks and snacks, and for a sit-down meal there are five on-site eateries. Most of the restaurants offer baby changing and bottle warming facilities and cater for all dietary requirements – speak to a member of staff on the day to find out more.

3/7 ZSL London Zoo

Looking for a memorable day out in the capital? Look no further than ZSL London Zoo. Throw in some spring sunshine and you’ve got yourselves a truly special day out. ZSL London Zoo primary focus on conservation. Its location means it’s been unable to expand over the years but it has seen massive improvements in the animals’ living conditions. And your little ones are Harry Potter fans, they’ll recognise the reptile house from The Philosopher’s Stone.

London Zoo hosts an array of animals from majestic tigers, to inquisitive giraffes, and an aquarium the kids will love. There is always so much to see and do at ZSL London Zoo. Their daily shows are a real treat and include penguin beach live, giants and dragons, spiders talk and much much more. Though education is at the forefront, it feels like anything but, especially when you realise everyone has the exact cherisher grin.

Brand new for Easter 2016, Land of Lions. The latest exhibit promises to be the most exhilarating and breath-taking which transport visitors from London to India – where they can get closer to lions. Until the exhibit opens, lions will not be on display. but trust us this is one exhibit you should not miss.

Stop and recharge the batteries at one of the many eateries, have breakfast at the Aquarium Kiosk or indulge in some fish and chips at the Terrace.

4/7 Colchester Zoo

Recognised as one of top two zoos in the UK by The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Attractions Awards, Colchester Zoo proves itself worthy as an unforgettable family day out – and an ethical one at that. Waiting behind the gates is a world full of animals waiting to be discovered, many of which can be seen up close, or on one of the many daily animal displays.

Colchester Zoo really wants families to interact with animals, not just to educate kids but to give families memories that last a lifetime. You and the little ones will have an opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes. One of the zoo’s highlight is its 24m tunnel by the sea lion pool where you can admire the animals underwater. Don’t miss the chance to stroll through the Kingdom of Wild and see Komodo Dragons, rhinos and giraffes romancing together.

5/7 Woburn safari park

For a day out packed with beautiful landscapes bursting with wildlife, there isn’t anywhere better than Woburn Safari Park. With over 80 species including lions, tigers and bears, you’ll be glued to your camera all day. This award-winning attraction is perfect for families who share the zoo’s commitment to looking after endangered animals.

A ticket to Woburn Safari Park is brilliant value for families and the park ticket includes drive-through animal reserves, foot safaris, access to the daily keeper talks and demonstrations, as well as plenty of fun activities like swan pedal boats, treetop trails and an indoor soft play area for the kids.

Woburn has two on-site restaurants serving both hot and cold meals, and all with impressive ethical credentials. All Woburn’s eggs are free range, their beef is sourced locally, fish and seafood is certified, tea is fair-trade and waste oil is recycled, so even when you indulge, you don’t have to feel guilty.

6/7 Cotswold Wildlife Park

Cotswold Wildlife Park is located just outside the very pretty town of Burford in the Cotswolds and attracts 400 thousand visitors per year. The Cotswolds is a popular staycation destination for families, therefore the zoo attracts not only families from all over the UK, but also from all over the USA, France, Germany and the Netherlands for a day of fun and fresh air, and to enjoy the natural wildlife. The park is also dog friendly and one of the only zoos in the UK where you can take your dog along. It relies on support from visitors and receives no outside financial help. By visiting, you will be helping grow and start many educational conservation programmes.

Cotswold Wildlife park is home to the largest privately owned zoological collections in the UK and has one of the largest reptile collections. Being a RHS Partner Garden, the zoo is becoming very well known for its gardens in themselves, which surround the animal enclosures. The Walled garden has cacti beds in the summer months and the tropical house has free-ranging sloths, bats and birds.

The park is divided into four sections, each with its own dedicated team of keepers to look after the animals in that section. You’ll find crocodiles, pythons, giraffes and more than 130 specifies of birds, so animal lovers will be spoiled for choice. Get also eye-to-eye with Rhinos on the lawn and meet Alan, the cute baby Rhino, who was born at the Cotswold Wildlife Park in September.

As well as hosting seasonal events, Cotswold Wildlife Park has an extensive range of activities that run daily throughout the year. Our favourite, and no doubt the kids will agree, is penguin feeding, which takes part twice a day, with qualified trainers on hand to answer questions. Other activities include daily Lemur Talks at 12 noon in the Madagascar exhibit with free-roaming lemurs and an adventure playground for the kids.

The park’s big focus is conservation, which is why they set up the Cotswold Wildlife Conservation Trust in 2013. The trust is aimed at raising funds for endangered animals and educating visitors about the severity of the problem and how they can help.

7/7 Chester Zoo

A staggering 1.6 million people visit Chester Zoo every year, but with over 20,000 animals in 125 acres of gardens, it’s not surprising. Staff pride themselves in giving animals the best care possible. The zoo’s Health Centre boasts excellent facilities for animals. Currently about half of the species at Chester Zoo are on the endangered list and the team are continually looking for ways to make animals’ lives better.

The zoo has a collection of marine life, reptiles, mammals birds and amphibians so whether your kids like tiny frogs or mighty lions, there are amply opportunities to catch them all.

Chester Zoo is bursting with kid-friendly activities, such as Butterfly Journey, which is the UK’s largest zoo-based butterfly house. The house is tropical so expect to feel a little humidity but is home to more than 30 species of butterflies from Central America, Africa and Asia.  Other activities include jaguar and elephant encounters and walking expeditions.

There’s no need to bring squashed homemade sandwiches for lunch, Colchester Zoo has everything a hungry family could wish for. From an ice-cream parlour, kiosks, cafe and restaurants, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Colchester zoo combines its ethos to look after animals with ethical food. Instead of using olive oil, the zoo’s kitchens use sustainable palm oil in their foods, to protect the rainforest. And by sourcing coffee from sustainable plantations, both animals and workers are protected.

The Five Best Zoos And Safari Parks In The UK

A visit to a zoo or safari park can be a fantastic day out for people of all ages. If you’re keen to get up close and personal with fascinating wildlife, why not visit one of the following attractions in the UK:

Longleat Safari & Adventure Park

Wiltshire’s Longleat Safari & Adventure Park (BA12 7NW) has the distinction of being the UK’s oldest safari park. Opened in 1966, it was the first facility of its kind to be launched outside Africa.

Initially a 100-acre lion reserve, it has grown substantially over the years, with parrots and llamas among the many creatures you can now see here, although the lions are still a popular draw for many people.

Open from mid-February to early November, a day ticket costs £26 for adults. Admission for three to 14-year-olds is £18.50 and £21 for the over-60s, although there are several money-saving ticket packages available at any ticket window .

Set within the grounds of the Longleat House stately home, a visit to the park also gives you the chance to go on a number of fairground rides and feed farmyard animals. For those interested in unique and exotic creatures, you might want to learn about the fascinating Rubber ducky isopod .

Situated just off the A36 between Bath and Salisbury, it can be reached by taking the A362.

Bristol Zoo

Bristol Zoo has the privilege of being one of the UK’s oldest zoological parks, with 2011 seeing it celebrate its 175th anniversary.

Here, you’ll find over 400 different species of creatures and nine covered animal houses, so even if the weather isn’t at its best there are still lots of fascinating creatures to look at, including the endangered red panda and pygmy hippos

Perhaps one of the most popular enclosures is Bug World, where you can see all kinds of creepy crawlies, including spiders and locusts, as well as learn how leeches were used for medicinal purposes in Victorian times.

Standard admission for adults is £14, while entrance for three to 14-year-olds is £8.50.

Located in the Clifton region of Bristol, close to the city’s famous suspension bridge, you can reach the zoo by taking either the number 8 or 9 bus.

Clifton Down train station is also close by, and if you are taking public transport you can purchase a special ticket to get discounted travel and entry to the zoo. If you’re driving, however, enter BS8 3HA into your sat-nav.

Based in the north-east corner of Regent’s Park, a visit to London Zoo (NW1 4RY) offers the chance to see 720 species of animal, including komodo dragons and flamingos.

Every day at 14:30, meanwhile, the Penguin Beach Live show offers you the chance to feed the creatures for yourself.

Just over one million people visit the zoo on an annual basis and it is open every day of the year, with the exception of Christmas Day.

Prices vary depending which time of year you visit, with admission for adults and children during the peak season (which covers the whole of August and every weekend between April and September) at £20.50 and £16.40 respectively.

Visit during the mid-season, which includes weekdays in September and the whole of October, and entrance for adults is £19.50 and £15.60 for children.

Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo (CH2 1EU) is visited by some 1.4 million people every year, so you’ll be in good company when checking out the creatures here.

The Cheshire-based park is home to over 400 different species of animal, including some of the most endangered creatures on earth, so there’s plenty to see.

In addition to having the largest orangutan exhibit in Europe, the attraction also contains the biggest zoo-based butterfly house in the UK.

You might also want to see the gaboon viper, which has the longest fangs of any snake in the world, while dozens of the fish kept here are currently threatened with extinction in the wild.

Admission over the peak season, which runs until September 4th, is £17 and £13 for adults and children respectively. However, between September 5th and October 31st this falls to £16 and £11.

Knowsley Safari Park

Ride your car through Knowsley Safari Park (L34 4AN) and you’ll come across everything from African elephants to bison. However, the famous Monkey Jungle zone could be most interesting, where baboons may even climb on top of your vehicle!

There is also the Bug House, which contains ants and cockroaches, in addition to several species of reptiles and amphibians, a sealion show and amusement rides.

Entrance for adults is £15 and children and pensioners pay £11.

With so many fantastic zoos and safari parks to visit, you’ll find plenty of places to indulge your wild side and get back to nature!

Going on an animal safari is just one way to show your appreciation to these beautiful animals which are part of us as we are part of them. Having such animal safaris just within reach is just a stepping stone in seeing some of these endangered animals in their natural habitat as they would have been in the beautiful African Savannah habitat as well. Despite all the natural habitat being in cooperated in most zoos around the world with the sheer space given for each animal to be as free and to gaze, hunt or be hunted is just one cycle of action which needs to happen naturally. Well not all people can afford to see these animals while on a safari in Africa and the only alternative is the different zoos. Lets love all animals to save all

In this article, I’ve brought you the best zoos in the UK . I was born and raised in England, so I’ve visited lots of the UK zoos, wildlife parks and conservation centers.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Zoos around the world have a reputation for being dirty, cruel and unfit for the critters that live in them. And in some places, that’s true.

But in the UK, there are some excellent zoos—lots of them are dedicated to preservation and education, and plenty of them take good care of their animals. That can’t be said about every zoo in the UK, but it’s definitely true for all the zoos in this list.

I’ve separated my list into places in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so wherever you’ll go in the UK, you can find a great zoo.

Anyway, enough of all that stuff. Here they are: the 15 best zoos and wildlife parks in the UK .

Established in 1828, London Zoo was exclusively a scientific facility for its first twenty years, before it opened up to the public.

And although it’s been a long ol’ time since the 1800s, the zoo is still committed to wildlife welfare, housing and protecting lots of endangered creatures and critters. It has more than 20,000 animals, and over 750 different species.

Basically, if you’ve ever wanted to see an animal, you’ll see it at London Zoo.

Some of the zoo’s highlights are the interactive walk-through monkey area, a huge reptile house, and the giraffe zoo keeping experience.

You can also meet penguins, take a wildlife photography class, and get really close to some of the animals. If you like immersive experiences, this is one of the best zoos in the UK. And if you’re in London, you should definitely visit — surprisingly, it’s right in the center of the city.

The biggest zoo in the UK, Whipsnade is absolutely massive. With 600 acres of land, the animals here live in huge enclosures. So if you want to visit a zoo where the animals are very clearly cared-for, Whipsnade is for you.

Northwest of London, the place is so big that there are public transport routes inside the park. It even offers overnight stays!

You get tigers, zebras, lions, cheetahs, penguins, elephants, chimpanzees, hippos, bears , rhinos and plenty more. In total, there are around 230 different species here, and more than 3,500 animals. The zoo offers interactive meet-the-animals experiences, bringing you close to giraffes, elephants, lions and tigers.

The zoo also has an excellent aquarium, featuring some fish that are now extinct in the wild. Conservation and protection are important ventures here—Whipsnade even helped to conserve the last-ever species of wild horse, breeding them before reintroducing them to China.

Close to Liverpool, this is the most-visited zoo in the UK, and loads of people think it’s the best in England.

It has the biggest zoo-based butterfly house in the UK, an interactive fruit bat forest (with hundreds of bats all whizzing around your head!), a walk-through bird center and an excellent Madagascan habitat.

Other highlights at Chester Zoo include the wetland aviary, a parrot breeding center, an aquarium, and a lazy river. Some of the most popular animals include African painted dogs, jaguars, lions, black rhinos, loads of monkeys and macaques, and plenty more. The zoo has more than 35,000 animals in total.

Because it’s such a busy place, it’s a good idea to get here early—they welcome around 2 million visitors a year.

More of a safari experience than a standard zoo, Longleat offers incredible immersive experiences. Here, lots of animals roam relatively freely—it was the first place in the world to offer safaris outside of Africa.

The most famous attraction here is the drive-through safari. In it, you clamber into a car, and drive through the park, passing deer, wolves, monkeys, tigers, lions, cheetahs, rhinos and much more.

You can even ride your own car around the safari, assuming you don’t want the monkeys to rip your fenders off. You can also wander on-foot among some of the park’s tamer residents, coming close to giraffes, zebras, tortoises, pygmy goats and more.

And when you’re bored of all that, there’s also a jungle cruise. On this cruise, you float along in a riverboat, spotting gorillas, sea lions, hippos and more.

For a proper interactive experience, Longleat is brilliant. It even used to have its own TV show ( Animal Park , in case you’re wondering).

Here’s something a bit different for you—a mega-fun zoo and theme park combo, packed with excellent animals and brilliant thrill rides.

The place is relatively close to Newcastle , where I was brought up, so I used to visit all the time when I was little. I loved it.

At Flamingo Land, you get a wide range of animals, including zebras, warthogs, alpacas, red pandas, lemurs, rhinos, kangaroos, monkeys, tigers, hippos, and loads more. Experiences include encounters with giraffes, meerkats, and penguins.

The theme park has kids’ rides, family rides, and thrill rides, with some of the best rollercoasters in the UK.

It might not be the best zoo in the UK, but it’s massively unique, and it’s loads of fun. If you want an activity-packed family day out, Flamingo Land is brilliant.

• Entrance Fees: £37.50 for adults and children (if booked 7 or more days in advance). Kids 3 and under are free

Another safari-style park, Knowsley is in northwest England, close to both Manchester and Liverpool.

Just like Longleat, the main attraction here is the safari drive. The longest safari drive in the UK, it clocks in at 5 miles (8km), and features 550 acres of animals. You see lions, rhinos, wildebeest, bison, camels, baboons and loads more. The animals come right up to your car, and they’re separated into 11 different themed zones. Just don’t try to feed them a sandwich.

If you don’t want to drive in your own car, you can take a guided tour in one of the park’s own vehicles.

Knowsley also offers a foot safari, so you can wander close to giraffes, meerkats, wolves, river hogs and more.

Knowsley isn’t quite as good as Longleat, but it’s a great second choice—and it’s much more affordable.

The Wild Place Project is a brand new Zoo and Wildlife Park in Bristol that is replacing the, now permanently closed, Bristol Zoo.

As the continuity of Bristol Zoo, they are specializing in care and conservation, the staff at Wild Place Project have helped to save over 175 species from extinction over a period of nearly 200 years.

Some of their star attractions include lions, gorillas, pythons, aye-ayes, monkeys, dwarf crocodiles, gibbons, gila monsters, armadillos, snakes, squirrel monkeys and plenty more. They don’t offer all the animal giants you might find at other zoos, but they have lots of unique and unusual species.

Bristol Zoo were the second zoo in Europe to house a gorilla!

Wild Place Project is a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable zoo—the entry fees are pretty low.

Found in Kent, this place is more like a safari than a zoo. But more importantly than that, it’s primarily a conservation site. Here, endangered animals are brought to breed, before being released back into the wild when they’re ready.

The reserve helps to breed monkeys, leopards, gorillas, rhinos, langurs, gibbons and more. And while you’re on-site, you can see them all!

Some of the safaris here are in vehicles, while some are on foot. They have 900 animals and 75 species, all living over 600 acres of land.

If you’re interested in animal protection and conservation, you’ll love this place. Here, you can learn all about the animals, their natural habitats, and what the reserve is doing to save them.

If you want to extend your experience, there’s an excellent on-site 4-star hotel set in 15 acres of landscaped gardens.

Pretty close to Port Lympne, both Howletts and its neighbor are located in Kent—and they’re both owned by the John Aspinall Foundation.

So (as you’ve probably guessed), this place is also an animal conservation charity. The park is dedicated to protecting animals, restoring them to the wild, and educating visitors about its work and its creatures.

Howletts is most famous for its elephants—they have the biggest herd of African Elephants in the UK. They also have more monkeys, leopards and gorillas than any zoo in England. Animal legend Steve Irwin once visited the park, claiming their gorillas were “the finest in the world.”

Other highlights here include a walk-through lemur enclosure and chances to feed some of the animals. In total, they have around 390 animals spread over 90 acres.

Shaldon Zoo is a small zoo located in the village of Shaldon, in Devon, England. The zoo is home to the charity Shaldon Wildlife Trust and is known for its focus on conservation and its commitment to caring for rare and endangered animals.

The zoo has just three full-time members of staff, but its size does not hinder its ability to make a difference in the world of conservation!

Shaldon Zoo supports conservation projects across the world and is home to some of the most rare and endangered animals on the planet.

Shaldon Zoo is not a big venue, in fact it’s one of the smallest zoos in Europe, but it’s totally worth the visit if you find yourself in the area.

Best Zoos in Scotland

This is my favorite zoo in the UK—I’ve been loads of times. If you’re only going to visit one zoo in Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo is easily the best choice.

The place is most famous for having the only pandas in the UK—and for having the world’s only knighted penguin. It’s officially called Sir Nils Olav (and, no, I’m not joking).

Other than that, they have 1000 animals spread over 80 acres. The penguin enclosure is massive and very popular, and there are walk-through experiences featuring monkeys and lemurs. Another great experience is Tiger Tracks, a glass viewing tunnel with Sumatran tigers.

Other highlights include lions, porcupines, sun bears, hippos, the only Queensland koalas in the UK, and a ridiculous number of varied monkeys.

And when you’re done in the zoo, make sure you explore Edinburgh —it’s a brilliant city!

Blair Drummond Safari Park is the best of its type in Scotland.

You can explore the park both on foot, and in a vehicle. Animals here include giraffes, African lions, rhinos, macaques, tigers, penguins, camels, deer and African elephants.

Set across 160 acres, some of the animals roam freely, while some are kept in (very big!) enclosures.

Other attractions at Blair Drummond include boat trips to a private chimp island (yes, you have read that right), sea lion presentations and birds of prey displays.

One of the best things about this park is where it’s situated—it sits between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, three of Scotland’s most popular spots.

Located inside the Cairngorms National Park (the biggest national park in the UK!), Highland Wildlife Park is a massively underrated little spot.

It only has around 300 animals, but many of its inhabitants are unusual and rare. Some highlights include snow leopards, red pandas, polar bears, eurasian elks, arctic foxes and amur tigers (siberian tigers). The park specializes in exhibiting animals from tundra and desert regions. They even have a polar bear cub!

Because it’s a pretty small place, Highland Wildlife Park offers intimate experiences, and chances to learn lots about the animals you meet.

While you’re here, make sure you do some hiking in the Cairngorms. One of the best hiking spots in Scotland, it’s packed with excellent waymarked trails.

Best Zoos in Wales

The only walking safari in Wales, this place is halfway between a safari and a traditional zoo. Some animals are in enclosures, while others roam freely—but the park is dedicated to giving all animals as much space as safely possible.

Some of the most popular animals here are rhinos, Sumatran tigers, meerkats, zebras, tapirs, monkeys, warty pigs and emus. The park also offers lots of immersive experiences, including activities involving gibbons, wallabies, tigers and red pandas.

The park is owned by Anna Ryder Richardson, a TV presenter from the local area.

While you’re visiting Manor Wildlife Park, make sure you explore the nearby Pembrokeshire coast. Nestled in southwest Wales, it’s one of the most beautiful (and popular!) tourist hotspots in the nation.

The oldest zoo in Wales, this place is set in a beautiful location in the north of the country—it overlooks mountains, and the shores of Colwyn Bay.

They have over 140 species, including snow leopards, brown bears, sea lions, Sumatran tigers, gibbons, lemurs, chimpanzees, deer, wallabies and red pandas. The park covers an area of 37 acres, making it smaller than most zoos on this list—so most people only spend half a day here.

Soon, they’ll be adding animal encounters to their attractions, including experiences involving penguins, primates, sea lions and more.

While you’re here, make sure you explore north Wales. The coastline is brilliant, the beaches are hugely underrated, and Snowdonia National Park is ridiculously good.

Best Zoos in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is pretty small, so it doesn’t have many zoos. But although this one isn’t quite as good as some others on this list, it’s still great. Set in a quiet and secluded area, it’s a peaceful little getaway close to a bustling city center.

Belfast Zoo offers 55 acres with 116 species, loads of which are extinct or endangered in the wild. Some of the highlights include lions, pygmy goats, chimpanzees, spider monkeys, lemurs, penguins, anteaters, sun bears, snakes and gorillas.

The zoo also offers daily talks and feeding sessions.

One of the most popular attractions in Northern Ireland, this place is a great day out if you’re traveling with kids. It opened in 1934, and it’s been entertaining families ever since.

Whipsnade is the UK’s largest zoo and one of Europe’s largest wildlife conservation parks. Colchester Zoo is home to 220 species living in  in 60 acres of parkland and lakes. 6. Longleat Safari and Adventure Park, Wiltshire

Longleat Safari Park opened in 1966 as the first drive-through safari park outside Africa. 8. Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is home to four male polar bears - the only polar bears in an English zoo.  In addition, YWP hosts wallabies, lions, tigers, camels, giraffes, meerkats and more. 9. Paignton Zoo, Devon

10. Knowsley Safari Park, Merseyside

11. Twycross Zoo – The World Primate Centre, Warwickshire

Twycross Zoo has around 500 animals of almost 100 species to see, including many endangered animals and also native species in the Zoo’s Nature Reserve. Twycross is now a renowned World Primate Centre, with a wide variety of monkeys, apes and the UK’s only group of bonobos. In addition, they’re home to giraffes, snow leopards, penguins, meerkats, tapirs, kangaroos, snakes, flamingos and the world’s rarest big cat, the Amur leopard. 13. Welsh Mountain Zoo, Conwy

The Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay is home to two Sumatran Tigers, two Snow Leopards and two Margays, as well as California sea lions, brown bears, and some very cheeky chimpanzees. Drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and Bactrian camels.You can stay over in one of the park’s eight safari lodges. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool.  The two-storey lodges feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs.

Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is huge. Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs. For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4×4.

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park. For an intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals. The estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style bubble. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with lions from an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

ZSL London Zoo

The Land of the Lions enclosure is modelled after the Gir national park, complete with railway tracks and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

2. Chester Zoo, Cheshire

The Chester Zoo is located in Cheshire , and it comes with a lot of titles. It is considered one of the largest zoos in the United Kingdom, measuring around 130 acres.

It is also termed the best zoo in this region, though, of course, that may not be everyone’s experience. In any case, the Chester Zoo is a place you’d love to visit. 2

It was founded in 1931 by a man named George Mottershead, together with his family. Mottershead’s main aim was to have a zoo in which the animals weren’t behind cages.

Years later and his dream has lived on, drawing as many as 2 million visitors.

The zoo houses over 35,000 individual animals classed into 500 species. A lot of these species are threatened and are being conserved in the zoo, so you will find a lot of rarities.

Chester doesn’t stop at animals. It also houses plant species, getting up to 265. There are a lot of exhibits than we can mention, but we’ll cite a few, like the Islands at Chester Zoo, the Spirit of Jaguar, the Elephants of the Asian Forest, and Realm of the Red Ape.

3. Marwell Zoo, Hampshire

The Marwell Zoo is located in the English County of Hampshire, specifically in the Colden Common parish near Winchester. It is owned by the Marwell wildlife charity that currently runs the place.

The Marwell Zoo is considered the biggest zoo in Hampshire, as it measures around 140 acres. 

The Marwell Zoo was established in 1972 by Dr. John Knowles. Something reputable about this zoo is its early emphasis on the conservation of animals.

It is one of the first zoos to have done so in Europe , and it was the home for now-extinct species like the Mongolian wild horse. It also houses endangered animals like the snow leopard and the Siberian tiger. 

Overall, the Marwell Zoo is home to over 1200 animals, all classed under 149 species. Exhibits include the Lemur Loop, the Roof of the World, the Penguin Coves, and the Arid lands.

4. Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire

The Whipsnade Zoo is the second zoo owned by the Zoological Society of London, located in a small village also called Whipsnade, which is in the county of Bedfordshire.

It was once called the Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, but the name changed after some time. It covers 600 acres, making it a very large place. You’d need a bus or train to move around, or you could use your ride.

The Whipsnade Park Zoo was established on 23 May 1931, years after the founding of the Zoological Society.

Something unique about the Whipsnade Park Zoo at its onset is that it was the first open zoo the public could access. It was immediately successful and has since grown after then.

The exhibits in Whipsnade are numerous and quite attractive. There is the Butterfly House, where you’d find different beautiful butterfly species and dwarf crocodiles.

Then there’s the Passage of Asia, Lions of the Serengeti, and an Elephant Herd.

5. Bristol Zoo/Wild Place Project

The Bristol Zoo was located in South West England, but it has been permanently shut down this year.

The announcement was first made on the 27th of November 2020 after over 100 years. The animals were relocated to the Wild Place Project site.

The Bristol Zoo was opened in 1836 under the official name the Bristol Zoological Gardens.

It was known to be in full support of conservation, a good example being the breeding of lemurs. It also participated in education programs worldwide.

Wild Place Project is a brand new replacement, and it has more space to keep larger animals.

It has different areas like the Bear Wood, the Gelada Rocks, the Benoue National Park, and Discover Madagascar. Animals include pythons, lions, dwarf crocodiles, snakes, and squirrel monkeys.

6. Colchester Zoo

The Colchester Zoo is located in Colchester city found, in Essex, the East of England. It is a small zoological garden measuring only 60 acres, but it has its value as it is a haven for many endangered animals. 

The Colchester Zoo was established in 1963 and has even celebrated 50 years of existence in 2013. Despite being small, it remains one of the best places to visit around Essex.

It houses around 5,000 individual animals and 270 species. There are different exhibits like the Australian Rainbows, the Butterfly Glade, and even two pools that stay within the Koi Niwa.

7. Longleat Safari and Adventure Park, Wiltshire

The Longleat Safari and Adventure Park hold the record of being the first drive-thru safari park outside Africa, and it remains the number one today. It is located in Wiltshire , a county in South West England.

This safari came thanks to Jimmy Chipperfield. It was opened to the public in 1949. 

The Longleat Safari comes with some tour packages, but you can also explore following your plan if you so wish. There’s a house, garden, and railway.

Some attractive exhibits you’ll find on this safari are the Jungle Cruise, the East African Reserve, the Monkey Temple, and the Animal Adventure.

8. Port Lympne Reserve

The Port Lympne Reserve is considered more of a Safari than a zoo, and most of the animals housed within are endangered or rare. The reserve covers over 600 acres of land, which is quite wide. You can choose to explore on foot or use a vehicle. 

There are an estimated 900 animals in the reserve, all categorized into 75 species.

The reserve offers education on the animals, how they are conserved, and any other fruitful information you may need to know.

9. Twycross Zoo, Leicestershire

The Twycross Zoo is located in Leicestershire , near a village named Norton Juxta Twycross. This zoo is known for having a large collection of monkeys and apes, the largest in the western world.

This is most likely what inspired their fully rebranded name: Twycross Zoo—The World Primate Centre. The zoo gets a lot of visitors, going over 600,000. 

The Twycross Zoo was established in 1960 by two folks named Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans.

It took 3 more years to put things in place, and it was by 26 May 1963 that the zoo got officially opened to the public. The zoo has since gotten a reputation for breeding primates. 

The zoo counts up to 500 animals spread over 150 species. Many of the latter are endangered.

Being a good breeding ground for primates, Twycross has all four types of great apes: The gorilla, orangutan, chimpanzee, and bonobo.

The zoo doesn’t exhibit only primates, though. It has other animals like snow leopards, meerkats, and flamingos.

10. Cotswold Wildlife Park, Burford

The Cotswold Wildlife Park is located south of Burford, England. It gets a decent number of visitors, around 350,000 in number as of the 2012 count.

It was officially established in 1970, but the foundations for it were being laid as far back as the 1800s. 

There are numerous attractions in this park, including a railway run and a garden filled with a lot of exotic animals.

You also get the chance to see some bats and giraffes. Overall, there are over 260 species in the place.

11. Flamingo Land, Kirby Misperton

The Flamingo Land is located in Kirby Misperton village in North Yorkshire. It was once linked to another park named Pleasure Island Family Theme Park until 2010, when both became separate parks.

Flamingo Land was established in 1959 through the actions of the founder Edwin Pentland Hick. The first animal in the park was a colony of flamingos.

From there, it expanded to include attractions like amusement rides and bottlenosed dolphins.

The modern Flamingo Land still has a lot of attractions like the Sik and Hero coaster, the Pterodactyl swing, and the flip-flop ship suspended over artificial lakes.

12. Howletts Wildlife Park, Kent

The Howletts Wildlife Park is located in the parish of Bekesbourne and was once known as the Howletts Zoo. It was established in 1957 as a private zoo by John Aspinall.

It has ties with the Port Lympne Zoo, which was opened to the public and had more space than the Howletts Zoo.

One special attribute of the Howletts Wildlife Park is the close relationship between the staff and animals, which you may not expect in many zoos.

Both the Howletts Wildlife Park and the Port Lympne Zoo are owned by the John Aspinall Foundation.

This foundation runs a lot of conservation programs, and if you’re interested in knowing how endangered animals are being protected, this is a good spot.

13. Shaldon Wildlife Trust, Devon

The Shaldon Wildlife Trust is quite small but popular in all regards. It is often called the “small zoo making a big difference.”

This Trust is unique in its collection of endangered animals, and you may not find those anywhere. It is set in a wildlife garden.

Here, you get to see creatures like the marmoset, lemurs, and tamarin. There’s also a space reserved for endangered frog species, which you most likely won’t find in other places.

Additional animals are squirrel monkeys and yellow-breasted capuchins.

14. Peak Wildlife Trust, Central England

The Peak Wildlife Trust is located in Central England , very close to towns like Leek, Ashbourne, and Stoke-on-Trent.

It was first known as the Blackbrook zoological park but changed names in 2015 after it reopened following closure the year before.

This zoo was established in 1991 under the name Blackbrook zoological park by Diana Holloway and Mark Rubery.

From then till now, the zoo has always held a lot of animals. This stretches from birds to mammals.

15. Knowsley Safari Park, Prescot

The Knowsley Safari Park can be found close to Prescot and is quite known for its work in conserving animals.

It was established in 1971 by a group of people, including Edward Stanley, the 18th Earl of Derby.

Just as the name implies, the Knowsley Safari Park’s main attraction is the drive, where you get the chance to see more than 29 animal species. 

Other forms of attraction include railways, a baboon house, and an outdoor pool. Additionally, the animals you’ll find are Baboons, African Elephants, and Rhinoceros.
