How to Plan a Class Field Trip

A field trip can be a very positive experience to move students outside the classroom into the wider world. There are so many learning experiences that can take place outside of the traditional classroom setting, and conducting a field trip can be a fun and informative way to administer curriculum materials. Field trips can range from day trips to a museum, art gallery, or park to an overnight camp that requires more planning. Regardless of the type of trip you want to facilitate, make sure that there are clear learning objectives. In order to plan a successful class trip make sure that you obtain all necessary permissions and that your students, chaperones, and teachers are adequately prepared. [1] X Research source

Selecting an Educational Site for a Field Trip

Step 1 Talk with the principal of your school.

  • You will also want to clarify a date with the principal in order to ensure that the class trip does not conflict with any other mandatory school activities.
  • Ask about emergency protocols while you’re on the trip. Review the school’s guidelines so you can be prepared.

Step 2 Determine the educational goals of the trip.

  • Learning outcomes of the trip.
  • Key vocabulary that will be used and taught during the trip.
  • Major concepts that will be taught.
  • Can the learning objective be accomplished without a field trip?

Step 3 Consider the age and learning abilities of your students.

  • For instance, an overnight ropes course to learn cooperation is not suitable for students in the second grade.
  • Young children will not be able to physically complete a ropes course and they are too young to attend an overnight trip.

Step 4 Make a list of potential sites.

  • Grocery store: Perform a nutritional scavenger hunt. Ask students to read food labels and create a weekly meal plan that would adequately meet their nutritional needs.
  • Local restaurant: Learn to cook a nutritional and well-balanced meal at a local restaurant.
  • Farm in the area: Visit a farm and learn how livestock are raised, fed, and distributed to customers.

Step 5 Contact potential sites.

  • You should also ask the site how many students they can accommodate. You want to make sure that they can handle the size of your group.
  • Ask about areas for seating and how many restrooms there are.
  • This additional information will help you to narrow down your list and ultimately select a site.

Step 6 Choose an affordable destination.

  • Choose a local site to cut down transportation costs.
  • Find a site that allows students to bring their own food and snacks so they don’t need to spend money on lunch or food.
  • Inquire if the site offers any discounted group or student rates.
  • Determine if you need to plan an agenda while you’re there or if a tour will be provided.

Step 7 Decide on a location.

  • Once you have officially selected a destination, you should get the name, phone number, and email address for a contact person at the site. This will make it easier to book the trip, once you have received the necessary approval.
  • If the trip will be over the course of multiple days, you will need to make appropriate overnight arrangements. Camping is an excellent way to provide students with a positive educational experience, but alternative indoor sleeping arrangements are frequently made as well. A tent campground with one or more group campsites, cabin, dormitory, sleeping hall, or hotel that accommodates three students per room would be most ideal for overnight school trips.

Obtaining Permissions for the Field Trip

Step 1 Obtain permission from your school board.

  • This will vary between school boards. Talk with the principal or a senior colleague to determine the exact requirements associated with taking a class on a field trip.

Step 2 Gain parental permission for each student.

  • Date and location of field trip as well as all transportation arrangements.
  • Educational purpose of the field trip.
  • Cost associated with the trip and date the money needs to be submitted.
  • Information about meal arrangements.
  • Trip schedule or list of activities for the day.
  • Place for parental signature and contact information.

Step 3 Ask parents to fill out medical release forms.

Planning the Logistics of the Field Trip

Step 1 Finalize your reservations for the group.

  • Regardless of the type of bus you use, you will need to clearly communicate to the driver the proper addresses and times for pickup and drop off. You should also provide the number of people traveling, including chaperones and teachers.
  • You should also introduce yourself as the class leader on the day of the trip and thank the bus driver for their work. Exchange numbers to stay in contact in case there are any changes on the day of the trip.

Step 3 Conduct a pre-visit to the site.

  • Explore some of the exhibits and activities that your class will be visiting in order to come up with ideas for pre-trip classroom activities.

Step 4 Recruit chaperones.

  • Once you have acquired enough adult chaperones, you should provide them with any behavioural guidelines and a detailed schedule for the trip.
  • Do not assume that adults will intuitively know what is expected of them.
  • Schedule a meeting with the chaperones before the trip to explain their roles, responsibilities, and any emergency protocols.
  • If there are too many volunteers for chaperones, use a lottery system to select the number you need. If you have too few, reach out to parents or the school’s PTA.
  • Ask chaperones to carry a cell phone so you can easily contact them on the day of the trip.

Step 5 Compile all of the necessary paperwork into a single binder or database.

  • Signed permission forms.
  • Student medical and insurance information.
  • Parent/guardian emergency contact information for that day.
  • Extra money in case of an emergency.
  • Checklist of all students and chaperones in attendance.
  • List of students who must take medication during the trip

Step 6 Take careful attendance on the day of the trip.

  • The school office: Provide a list all of the children attending the trip, the children absent that day, the children who will remain at the school and their location, and a cell phone number where you can be reached.
  • Chaperones: Provide a comprehensive class list, a list of each subgroup, and the name of the supervisor for each group.
  • Teachers: Provide a master list of all the groups, all the buddy partnerships, the parent contact information, the student health and insurance information, and the school phone number.
  • Have attendance sheets ready so the staff can take head counts during the trip.

Step 7 Make alternate arrangements for the students who do not go on the trip.

  • For example, you could have them complete an online scavenger hunt by researching a similar topic to that being covered on the class trip.
  • Be creative and try and come up with a fun activity for these students.

Preparing Your Students for a Field Trip

Step 1 Integrate the trip into classroom lessons.

  • Have your students study the habitats of a variety of animals they will see at the zoo.
  • Then ask them to record the features of the habitats that the zoo provides for the same animals.
  • Have them compare the natural habitats to the constructed zoo habitats to see if they are getting a similar type of lifestyle.

Step 2 Explain all activities prior to the trip.

  • This will also give you the opportunity to provide any instructions, which will save time on the day of the trip.
  • You could also brainstorm questions that the class may want to ask of the instructors at the site. Alternately, you could teach your students how to ask thoughtful questions.

Step 3 Communicate behavioural expectations.

  • Outline expected behaviour during transit as well. For example, students must remain seated while on the bus and should not distract the bus driver.

Step 4 Discuss safety with your class.

  • Depending on the type of trip you may want to establish a buddy system or seating plan for safety purposes.
  • You could also divide the class into smaller groups with adult supervisors and chaperones. This will make it easier to monitor student behaviour.

Step 5 Send a letter home providing students with additional information about the trip.

  • The destination, with a physical description of the site.
  • Detailed list of the planned activities.
  • Any special preparations the parents and students need to make for that day, such as special clothing, boots, lunches, money, sunscreen, gloves, backpacks, water bottles, etc.
  • The drop off and pick up time for the children, if it differs from the regular school day.
  • A packing checklist if the trip involves overnight travel.

Field trip days are often the best days of the entire school year . Most students look forward to this day for weeks or months! That's why it is important that you mind some basic rules to keep the trip safe and enjoyable.

  • Don't get reckless on the bus. You don't want your day to end early, do you? Misbehavior on the bus can get you into trouble and ruin your day. You could end up sitting on the bus while the others enjoy the destination.
  • Don't wander off. Listen carefully when the teacher gives instructions about sticking with the group or sticking with an assigned partner even when going to the restroom. Don't ever wander off on your own, or your trip could end badly. If you break this rule, you could end up with the teacher as your partner!
  • Respect the chaperones. You should respect any chaperones and listen to them as you would your own teacher or parents. Chaperones have a big responsibility, watching after so many students at one time. They can't afford to give too much attention to one "squeaky wheel," so they will probably be intolerant to distractions. Don't be disruptive.
  • Respect nature. Some field trips will take you into contact with animals or plants. For your own safety, be mindful of potential dangers and don't assume you can tug, pull, tease, or touch things safely.
  • Don't roughhouse. You may visit a factory containing equipment with moving parts, or a museum with rooms full of pottery and glass, or a riverside with fast-running water. Kids don't always think about the dangers that come with certain places, so think about the potential hazards before you go, and remember not to push or pull on friends.
  • Keep an eye on the clock. If you are supposed to meet your group for lunch or for loading onto the bus, you should keep an eye on the time. You don't want to miss lunch, and you surely don't want to be left behind.
  • Arrive in plenty of time to get on the bus. You don't want to miss the fun day because you ran into heavy traffic. Plan ahead and leave early.
  • Eat and drink in designated places. Don't assume you can buy a soda from a machine and drink it anywhere. Your destination site might have strict limitations when it comes to drinking or eating on site.
  • Dress for hot and cold. If it's a warm day, it could be really cold inside a building. If it's cold outside, it could be steamy inside! Try to dress in layers so you can add and subtract as necessary.
  • Don't litter. You can be banned from some locations for this. Don't be sent back to the bus!
  • Bring comfort items for the ride. If you are facing a long bus ride, ask if you can bring a pillow or small cover for comfort.
  • Bring along a small recording device or a notebook  because you know there will be a follow-up assignment or quiz.
  • Pay attention to any speakers. If your teacher has arranged a speaker, and if a speaker takes time out of his/her day to share wisdom with you, don't ignore it! This trip is for your education. Oh — and there probably will be a quiz.

Consider the below areas as you plan your trip:

Family involvement in the planning process

Involving families in the planning process can enhance the experience for everyone involved. Families could provide their diverse perspectives and ideas for potential destinations, ensuring the trips are exciting and relevant for all children. This involvement also boosts excitement and participation among families, fostering a stronger sense of community within the preschool. Practical ways to engage families include conducting surveys to gather input on preferred destinations or simply mentioning in your newsletter about upcoming field trip to invite their insights and suggestions.

Teaching moments

Sometimes preschool field trips are planned around a specific topic the class has been covering. Sometimes trips are simply a good learning opportunity that you’ll weave a lesson into. No matter which scenario you’re in as a teacher, it’s helpful to have your notes and activities prepared in advance.

How many adult chaperones will you need for the field trip? When you’re planning field trips for kids, it’s crucial to have a confirmed, appropriate number of chaperones based on the number of children attending. 

You can request family volunteers or set up a rotating schedule so families can plan ahead. Consider offering incentives like free lunches or gift cards and remind them it’s a great opportunity to have a meaningful experience with their child and get to know the other children and families in your program.

Plan to bring extra snacks in case meal times run late. Prepare to answer questions from parents about whether to pack a lunch or work out an eating arrangement at the field trip location. If you'll be serving meals on the field trip, prepare the food before and determine how you will transport it. Consider packing a cooler for any perishable foods that need to be kept cold, and pack plenty of water if there is no water available at your destination.

Transportation

Some preschool policies require that school vehicles are used for field trips. Before the trip, determine transportation needs, such as how many vans or buses will be needed and if parents are permitted to drive.

If there’s a cost associated with the trip, how will you secure funds from the school or handle payments from parents? Use your communication platforms to alert parents of any expenses they’ll need to cover as far in advance as possible.

Sometimes drop-off and pick-up schedules can be impacted by field trips. Create an agenda and itinerary that shows where the class will be and breaks down how long you’ll be at each location. This helps parents plan their day and gives school administration information they would need in an emergency. 

If any children have medication, medical equipment, or anything else that needs to be on hand for them, it needs to be accounted for in field trip planning. Bring any health and safety documents such as an accurate roster to count the children and emergency contact information. Teachers should also pack first aid kits and antibacterial hand wipes if there is no access to clean running water on your trip.

Field trip consent from families

Securing family permission through a consent form is a crucial step in planning and preparing for field trips. A well-crafted consent form ensures the safety and legal compliance of the trip and fosters trust and transparency with families. The form should clearly outline the details of the field trip, including the destination, date, time, transportation arrangements, and any activities planned. Additionally, it should include emergency contact information, any special instructions regarding allergies or medical conditions, and a section for parents or guardians to provide their signatures, indicating their approval for their child's participation.

Field trip safety tips

Taking young children on a field trip can be an overwhelming experience without the right preparation. Field trips are very exciting, so be aware that the children may have extra energy or be more distracted. To have a fun, safe, and smooth trip, focus on safety measures before and during the excursion.

Before the field trip

  • Review the schedule with the children and tell them what to expect 
  • Give children safety guidelines and procedures to follow
  • Assign pairs or small groups for headcount checks
  • Involve children in checking the field trip supply checklist
  • Instruct children to wear bright clothes or a certain color to make them easy to spot
  • Prepare and bring a first aid kit

Choosing where to take the children in your preschool class is one of the most exciting parts of field trip planning. Here are 20 engaging and educational field trip ideas for preschoolers:

Apple orchards and pumpkin patches can show children how these foods are grown and offer a truly hands-on education as they pick their own.

Nature walk

Nature walks are an educational adventure that allow children to discover various plants, leaves, critters, and trees. It’s also great physical activity!

Farmer’s markets

A field trip to the local farmer’s market or grocery store can be an opportunity to teach children lessons about nutrition and where their food comes from.

Many children’s books are full of stories and illustrations of sea creatures, so the aquarium is sure to be a hit with preschoolers. They’ll get a chance to see these creatures up close and learn more about them.

Plan a Field Trip

Explore, imagine, delight. Organize a Museum visit to enrich learning with exciting new exhibits and programs! By reserving a field trip, visitors agree to comply with the Museum’s full code of conduct .

Make a Reservation

Please review the helpful guide below for details around organizing a field trip.

Programs fill to capacity and there is a limit to daily school group admissions. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Please note: school field trips and programs are not offered during Massachusetts holidays and school vacation periods.

Call Science Central at 617-723-2500 to make a reservation. We are available 7 days a week, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Field Trip Reservation Fees

The Museum has limited funding available for students who qualify for field trip assistance. Please inquire about this if there is a need.

Multiple visits: If you return with the same students, you receive 50% off Exhibit Halls admission. When making reservations, inform Science Central that you will be visiting more than once with your students.

Field Trip Rates are not available during MA school vacation weeks.

**The $5.00 Exhibit Halls admission during the months of September, October, and January is available for schools with a population of economically disadvantaged students at or above 25%.

Theater Shows

Fees vary for reserved field trip add-on programs. Receive a discount if you reserve a show along with Exhibit Halls Admission. All prices shown are per-person.

School rates are available to accredited public and private pre-K – 12 schools that deliver compulsory education (primary purpose is required by law), except during Massachusetts school holidays and vacation periods.

School rates are also available for schools with extended days (all children enrolled in the school are involved in extended school hours) or schools in session through the summer months. After-school groups or out-of-school programs are not eligible for the school group rates.

Cost Planning, Savings and Scholarships

Payment for your field trip is required upon arrival and must cover the full number of students, chaperones, and teachers in your reservation.

Accepted Payment Types

Purchase orders: Arrange at least five days in advance with Science Central. Any amount above the approved purchase order amount must be paid in person via cash, school check, or credit card.

Cash: Large bills are appreciated.

Checks: Must be made out to Museum of Science. No personal checks. Bring check with you the day of your visit — please do not mail.

Credit cards: MC, VISA, Discover, or AMEX

Payments not accepted for field trip participants

Eligible schools can take advantage of special pricing for field trips available during these months. Exhibit Halls admission for students and chaperones is $5 per person. This discount is available for schools with a population of economically disadvantaged students above 25%.

Pair your discounted Exhibit Halls admission with an IMAX film for just $4 more. To find out if your school qualifies for any scholarships: 617-723-2500.

If you plan to return to the Museum with the same students, they may receive 50% off Exhibit Halls admission for the second visit. When making reservations, please inform Science Central that you will be visiting more than once with your group.

Reduced Exhibit Halls admission is available for qualifying schools. Please note that funding is limited and is distributed first come, first served.

Important: If your group size changes after you make your reservation, you must notify us by 4:00 pm on the day before your visit. Contact Science Central by phone: 617-723-2500, or email: [email protected].

There are no refunds for dropped numbers on the day of your visit. Additional participants above 5 per 100 will be charged regular Exhibit Halls admission. There are no same-day refunds if you reduce your number of participants by more than 5 per 100. Any additions are subject to availability and are not guaranteed entrance to IMAX films or other shows/programs.

  • One chaperone per 10 students is required for grade levels pre-K – 8.
  • One chaperone per 15 students is required for grade levels 9 – 12.
  • Chaperones must stay with students at all times and are responsible for the safety of the students and the exhibits they visit.
  • Chaperones must be at least 21 years old.
  • Educators and chaperones should act as facilitators, encouraging inquiry, and assisting students in navigating Museum Exhibit Halls and programs safely and appropriately.
  • Stay with pre-assigned chaperone-sized group at all times, regardless of the students' ages.
  • Adhere to the code of conduct established by school systems and community centers. Behavior that is not acceptable at schools and community centers is not acceptable at the Museum of Science. Please note: the Museum is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property.
  • Sit together with students in venues such as the Mugar Omni Theater, Planetarium, 4-D Theater, and the Theater of Electricity.

Booking Details

There is no bus parking on Museum grounds except for drop-off and pickup. Buses may park at the Boston Autoport in Charlestown.

Chaperones and teachers may park cars in the Museum garage and will receive a $10 flat rate. In order to receive this discount, you must turn in your chaperone badge at the Information Desk at the end of your visit. Please note that credit or debit cards are the only form of payment accepted for garage transaction.

Field trip participants may either purchase lunches in the Riverview Café or bring bag lunches. NOTE: Due to space limitations in the café, you must reserve a 30-minute time slot for lunch when making your field trip reservation.

Pre-order meals are available for $7.25 per person.

Offered in the Riverview Café. Reserved seating, no hassles, and speedy service. Spend time enjoying your lunch instead of waiting in line.

We offer a choice of:

If you plan to eat your bag lunch in the Riverview Café, please note that seating is currently limited. You must reserve a lunch space and mealtime when you make your field trip reservation. Bins will be provided for the storage of your group’s coats, bags, backpacks, and lunches upon arrival. Please advise students not to bring or store valuable items; the Museum cannot assume responsibility for lost or damaged items.

Home School Information

Home school groups of at least nine visitors can make reservations over the phone and gain access to discounted school group pricing for teachers, chaperones, and students.

We encourage you to collaborate to form larger groups and set up a reservation. Call Science Central at 617-723-2500. Groups of fewer than nine should go to the Box Office where normal admission rates apply.

Frequent home school visitors will find Museum membership to be a better value than standard box office pricing. We offer several levels of membership, all of which include a variety of benefits such as IMAX and Planetarium passes, discounted parking, and admission to other science museums.

Many public libraries throughout Massachusetts provide Museum of Science passes that allow up to four people per day to visit the Museum's Exhibit Halls at a significantly reduced rate.

These passes can be used for your home school visit. Contact your local library to find out if they participate and how to reserve your pass.

Students can get hands-on science experience with our Drop-In Activities. Investigate human biology at the Biogen Foundation Exploration Hub or create like an engineer with Design Challenges in our Engineering Design Workshop!

Detroit judge who put teen in handcuffs during field trip is demoted to speeding tickets

DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit judge who was temporarily removed after ordering a teenager into jail clothes and handcuffs during a field trip is back on the bench but assigned to speeding tickets and other relatively minor offenses.

Judge Kenneth King lost courtroom duties in August and was ordered into social-emotional training by the chief judge at 36th District Court. Instead of handling key hearings in major felonies, he returned this week to the court's traffic division.

“We appreciate his efforts in preparing for this role, and wish him success as he transitions into this new responsibility,” Judge William McConico said in a written statement.

King's attorney, Todd Perkins, said the judge is willing to work anywhere at the court.

“He truly understands and wholeheartedly embraces the concept of teamwork,” Perkins said Thursday.

King got in trouble for singling out a 15-year-old girl for falling asleep and having what he considered to be a bad attitude while she was visiting his courtroom with other teens.

He ordered Eva Goodman into jail clothes and handcuffs — all while the field trip was on a livestream video. King also threatened her in front of her peers with juvenile detention before releasing her.

The girl's mother, Latoreya Till, said she may have been tired because they don’t have a permanent address. King told TV stations that he apologized.

Till has filed a lawsuit, seeking more than $75,000 for "inflicting fear and severe emotional distress.”

Field trips - suggestions, guidelines, preparation, and check list

Purpose of field trips.

Field trips are generally motivating for students, bring a vividness or reality you cannot bring with conventional lessons, and provide information for learning in a relevant real world context. If you are planning to use field trips, review the following information.

General Guidelines

  • must be relevant to the objective, curriculum and grade level
  • visit the site
  • teach the behavior - field trip
  • chaperons & chaperon training
  • bus drivers
  • create a data collection device
  • never leave students alone
  • run a closure
  • thank you notes

Before the trip

  • Establish the educational purposes of the trip. Write educational goals. The activities and content examined during the field trip must be relevant and connected to outcomes and objectives in the curriculum. Field trips can certainly be entertaining, but if entertainment is the only outcome, the teacher must rethink the trip with respect to the use of time and and other resources that are both limited and precious.
  • Take the trip yourself before you take students there. You are to be the guide, therefore, you need to know what kids will be experiencing. A previsit will help you understand what to expect, and what to avoid. If you can't, then study background information for the visit. You need to acquire valuable knowledge for the visit and for instructional activities after the visit.
  • Select a date.
  • Verify date and time with authority at the destination.
  • Determination the costs and who will pay. Determine any arrangements for transportation and if the costs will be covered by the administration or other sources need to be found.
  • Obtain administrative permission. In writing if necessary from your administration for the activity.
  • Record date on School calendar and notify the cafeteria.
  • Make arrangements for transportation.
  • Contact the docent or, on site education director, or a person who can help coordinate the visit. They may have different tours available and you may request a packet of information from them to learn more about what is available. Those materials could include a map of the site, buildings, rules, highlights, if guided tours are available, and if so, then make sure the docent knows the goals for your trip.
  • Make arrangements for the visit: time to leave, schedule, activities and special materials.
  • You must teach the behavior needed for the field trip to be successful. This is the most important variable for a success trip .Make a list of behaviors students should know and do while on the field trip. Include a list of bus rules from the bus company. Also get a list of rules for where you will visit (e.g. art gallery, zoo, museum rules and policies) and include those as you teach, model, and practice behaviors with the students before the trip. This helps everyone to know what is expected and helps for a successful experience. Remind everyone students, chaperons, bus drivers, that you all are representing your school, school district and community. Specify verbally to students and in writing to students and parents your expectations and requirements for making this trip successful. One poorly-arranged, disorganized and badly-implemented field trip could result in the elimination of field trips for you and possibly your entire school. It could even end your teaching career.
  • Make arrangements for lunch and restroom facilities. School cafeterias will often make sack lunches for students for a small fee if the request is made ahead of time or check out possible places on your previsit. Always notify in advance of your visit any food establishment where you plan to take students. Even fast food restaurants can make your visit more enjoyable if they know how to plan their staffing.
  • If your plans involve outside events, picnics or time in a park, develop an alternate plan for bad weather.
  • What is going to occur?
  • What schedule will be used?
  • What are the costs for the parents?
  • What students need to bring?
  • What students need to wear?
  • What type of transportation will be used? Bus? Parent driven vehicles?
  • What type of chaperon is needed?
  • How will lunch be handled?
  • When students leave and return.
  • Prepare a Parent permission form for them to sign and return. You must obtain signed permission forms from care givers (parents or guardians) for each student who is taking the trip. Make sure the permission slip, includes the date of the trip, time leaving and returning, and costs. The permission form should also be a medical release form allowing you to get medical assistance for a student who may become ill or injured during the trip. This is of particular importance if you are taking an extended trip (overnight or beyond) or if you are taking students out of the immediate vicinity.
  • If parents are to drive, make sure that a photocopy of their driver's license and current proof of insurance are on file in the school office.
  • Select adequate numbers of sponsors and meet with them to explain the goals of the trip and their responsibilities. It is often recommended to have one adult chaperon for every 5 students. Chaperoned should be provided training before the trip, which should include the duties and the responsibilities of chaperoning students. It should be made clear to chaperons what school policies are for students and they will be required to adhere to them also. For example: dress appropriately for the event, use appropriate language and behavior, use of alcohol, tobacco, other substances which are off limits to students, and what to do in the event of an emergency. The use of cell phones makes field trips a bit easier to supervise on site. However, keep in mind that certain places such as art galleries, museums, concert halls, and hospitals do not allow or restrict the use of cell phones.
  • Make sure you ask the bus driver(s) if they want to participate in the activities of the visit. If so, arrange to purchase tickets for the bus drivers and sponsors.
  • Make attendance sheets for the trip so you always know if everyone is present. You would not want to leave someone behind.
  • Discuss the field trip. What will students learn? What things in particular do we want to observe? What questions do we want to ask the guide? This preparation will help the students be more observant and guide their research during the field trip. Chances are good that some students will be taken to places they have been before. The first-grader has been to the supermarket a hundred times with their parents. Most of them have seen trains, been to the airport, been to the zoo, and all have been to a gas marts and convenience stores. Why, then, should the school take children to such places on field trips? The answer is in your goals. And the better prepared students are to observe and collect data the more likely they will achieve the goals, by looking for things they would not otherwise see.

The day before the trip

Set or review the standards of conduct for the trip. Through discussion, the point can be made that each student is a representative of their school and that persons in other communities may make judgments about the entire community based on their actions. Rehearse behaviors and role play confusing situations. Establish a signal for gathering and attention.

Double check with the principal, bus personnel, cafeteria, and check to see if all permission slips are in, office reports completed, and chaperons confirmed.

A final comment related to bus drivers. It is important all participants on the trip treat the bus driver(s) with courtesy and respect. You will have to remind students and chaperons of the need to regard the feelings and obey the directions of the drivers. Remember, safety is foremost in the mind of the drivers, but they also have responsibilities for the care and maintenance of the bus. Obtain a copy of any bus or bus driver rules beforehand, review all rules for all those participating on the trip and speak directly to your students and chaperons about them. Additionally, before you leave ask the drivers if they would like to attend the field trip activity with you. If so, make sure you have purchased or have the means to purchase admission for the drivers.

Provide students with a data collection activity so they are engaged in a meaningful examination and interaction while on-site. This activity could be a note-taking framework and/or questions to answer and/or items to examine. In the case of a museum visit, it could be a scavenger hunt with questions to answer on items or exhibits in the museum.

Review the rules, give groups color coded name tags, bracelets or all wear one color of shirts. Take a supply bag containing: first aid kit, photography supplies, trash bags, ...

Take roll before leaving the school grounds and count noses frequently. With young children it is a good idea to place them in pairs.

Enforce rules immediately and consistently.

Arrive at the destination on time and have the students ready for the guide on time. Be sure to introduce the guide to the class. Position supervisors through the group: at least one in front, middle and back. Keep students on track to prevent accidents or injury. Before leaving check again to make sure all children are with the group.

Make sure that time is organize so there is sufficient time for students' to ask questions and receive answers from their observations or their guides.

Make sure all students can see, hear and are actively involved.

Monitor and assist students with the collection of the preassigned information.

If possible and permitted by the bus driver, you could hold a closure discussion on the bus ride home. This would make use of some of the time on the ride home and also solidify the information in the students' minds by immediately addressing the information and avoiding the problems created when too much time passes between the event and the closure (Forgetting Curve).

After the trip

  • When you return, conduct a closure activity on the field trip by asking students to explain why, where, how, and what was accomplished during their outing.
  • Send thank you notes from the class and the teacher to the chaperons, bus driver(s), staff where visited, and the bus company. Even if the buses are owned by your school district, you should still thank and commend the drivers for their contributions to the success of your event. In the primary grades, the students might dictate a letter to the teacher who writes it displayed for students to see, edit, and approve. Individual students may copy the letter and one may be selected to be sent or, in some cases, they may all be sent.
  • Assess if the goals of the trip have been achieved.
  • Assess the conduct of the class in terms of the standards set up before the trip. Discuss whether they listened attentively, stayed in a group, observed habits of courtesy... This assessment should always include favorable reaction as well as ways in which they might improve on subsequent trips. A list might be made of these suggestions for improvement and saved for review just before the next trip is undertaken.
  • Utilize opportunities to draw upon data and experiences from the field trip in other subjects taught in the classroom.

Indoor recreation centers feature a variety of fun activities for your group to enjoy. Also known as family entertainment centers, indoor recreation centers are known for attractions such as ball pits, batting cages, bowling alleys, go kart racing, laser tag, arcade games, mini golf, and much more.

BEFORE YOU GO – Call ahead to ask about age, height or fitness requirements, as well as necessary or recommended equipment. – Download a map and list of activities from the website. Check if the website offers printable lessons or worksheets. – Discuss with students the importance of teambuilding and game playing.

WHAT TO WONDER Ask:  How do these games and activities function? How does the laser “tag” the player, why is the bowling lane so slick?

Observe  how your teammates react and interact. Remember to stay positive – everyone is different and brings a unique advantage to the team. Also, how is the venue designed and laid out? What games and features (batting cages, arcade games, redemption games) go where, and why? Have students take a look around at how many people are there enjoying themselves; what is the maximum number of occupants, and why? How does the management go about heating and cooling the venue at different times of the year? Speak to the staff about these questions; learn the “why” behind how things are arranged, and consider the role of safety.

Describe  how each team member contributes to the activity. Describe the rules and procedures of the games.

Opinion:  What type of player are you – competitive, all about fun, spirit of the team? What do think about cheating during sports or games?

Compare  several activities you completed today. Which were hardest and why? Which were most fun? Which required the most teamwork?

Challenge  students to predict scores or game outcomes, to improve their skills by using basic math or physics concepts.

FOLLOW UP  Discuss  the importance of teamwork or “playing the game.” In what other situations might you need these skills? Is it important to play by the rules? Why or why not?

Research  the history of the sport or game of your choice. Research tips on how to play and improve. Find videos or photos of the activities.

Project:  Design and play a mini version of the sport or game at your school, and challenge students to use basic math or physics to help.

Toronto teachers’ union accuses Ford of diverting attention away from Grassy Narrows as province begins investigating controversial field trip

The union representing some elementary teachers in Toronto says Premier Doug Ford’s comments about a field trip highlighting the challenges facing a northern Ontario First Nation, which ended with students chanting pro-Palestinian slogans, are taking away from the plight of the impacted Indigenous Peoples.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT), a local branch of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), said the premier’s recent comments acted as a “diversion” from the core message of last week’s event for the Grassy Narrows First Nation.

“This was a teachable moment, and Doug Ford failed the test. Instead of leadership, he’s shown he will continue to ignore the call of Grassy Narrows for justice, and throw our schools, teachers, and our communities who need help the most under the bus,” the group said in a lengthy statement. “We will continue to support Grassy Narrows in its call for environmental justice.”

As many as 15 schools participated in the Grassy Narrows River Run on Sept. 18, which featured a march to Queen’s Park to raise awareness about the ongoing mercury poisoning within the First Nation. The field trip was meant to be an educational experience, according to the Toronto District School Board, where students would hear directly from Indigenous voices about the situation in Grassy Narrows.

However, videos circulating on social media showed some young students taking part in the march and repeating the slogan, “From Turtle Island to Palestine, occupation is a crime,” after it was shouted by someone who appeared to be a protest organizer.

Dozens of parents who took issue with the trip rallied outside the TDSB headquarters in North York on Tuesday to protest the school-sanctioned event. Some parents said they were misled by what the field trip would entail and did not know their children would be taking part in the rally.

Ford first commented on the event at an unrelated news conference on Monday, calling the inclusion of students in what he described as a “Palestinian” rally “disgusting.”

“We'll be all over this and make sure people are held accountable, and they think twice about bringing young little kids, without the parents' permission, on these school trips. It's disgusting,” he said at the time.

Ford went on to say that the teachers involved in the planning of the trip should “stick to their knitting” and focus on the classroom, which the ETT labelled as a “sexist attack.”

Education Minister Jill Dunlop announced Tuesday that the incident is being investigated at a provincial level.

For the TDSB’s part, the board apologized and said that, generally, students should not participate in organized protests as part of a field trip.

“The TDSB will also be reviewing its field trip procedures to provide guidance that upholds the safety and well-being of students,” the statement added. Following a special meeting with the TDSB on Wednesday evening, the board said it is suspending its own investigation as a result of the ministry's investigation.

Requesting Field Trip Meals? Here’s how to ensure it’s done properly so your meals are ready to go on your field trip date. See the Formal Field Trip Request Process for more details.

The #1 way to ensure Field Trip Meals are ready for your field trip:

  • Site Administrator or designee must approve field trips at least 10 business days prior to the field trip date. Field trip meal requests are NOT forwarded to Student Nutrition Services, until after the site administrator or designee have approved the field trip. We are receiving many requests for Field Trip Meals outside of the ten business day window, which SNS needs to order from our vendors. Our vendors are very strict about ordering windows, there is even less flexibility this year.

The #2 Best Thing to do to Help Ensure Field Trip Meals are ready for your field trip:

  • Talk to your dining staff and build a relationship with them. Again, Field Trip meals are not forwarded to SNS directly, and if they don’t have meals ready for you, then a step in the process was missed. A verbal request for field trip meals is not enough, however communicating with dining staff in person can help everyone do their job more efficiently. In-person notifications are great, but they must be followed up with through the formal channels .
