Jane from Denver

Call us toll-free at (800) 574-3898. We will discuss your travel ideas and gather the information needed to customize a tour to your specifications. Because we do not have a catalog with dates that we try to fill, your tour will be perfectly tailored to you.

We will prepare a sample brochure outlining your tour as discussed, give you a no-obligation quote, and work with you to get your tour exactly the way you want it. Once you have approved your trip, we will print and send you tour brochures to distribute to interested participants and tour posters to assist in promotion.

Enroll students/participants. You’ve taught your students about the world—now make the world their classroom. With Educational Tours, you can revisit your curriculum with your students, but this time you can do it in person. Help your class see, do, and learn things they never could from a textbook. Enroll just 12 students and your spot is covered. Other options are also available to help you and other chaperones enjoy a complimentary trip.

Collect and then send us the first deposits and applications.

Let us handle the rest. Before you leave for your tour, we will be busy with the following:

  • We will communicate with you often regarding questions on your tour.
  • We will send you a ledger showing how the monies are applied and we will update you frequently as monies come into our office.
  • Once we have traveler contact information, we will contact each participant and provide them with a welcome pack, a medical release form, an optional insurance application, a minimum standards page, and payment coupons for additional payments.
  • We will send you a rough draft itinerary for review before we finalize all components of the tour.
  • Once we have everyone’s final payment, approximately 4 weeks prior to departure, we will send to you a box of tour components including a travel accessory, luggage tag(s), tickets, vendor confirmations, and all necessary info you need for your tour.

History tells the story of the past, provides context to the present, and potentially a glimpse into the future. As is often the case, history repeats itself.

There’s no better way to learn about a place than by looking back. History tours can be priceless. After a year when race dominated the national conversation in a way not seen since the 1960s, there’s soul searching and a quest for knowledge and understanding. Start that journey with a guided tour that teaches and entertains.

While self-guided tours allow you to go at your own pace, I’m all for guided tours. You can’t beat having a passionate tour guide who knows the history backward and forward like they lived it. That insight is priceless and heightens the experience twofold.

Here are a few African American history tours to put on your must-go list.

Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.

1. Memphis Caravan Tour, Memphis, Tennessee

A Tour of Possibilities offers this guided 2.5-hour tour of African American history that you enjoy from the comfort of your own car. You hear the guide’s commentary through your car speakers by accessing the link provided upon arrival. The exploration includes sites like the Slave Haven, where you descend the stairs into the dark, damp cellar and peer through the trapdoors and hidden passages where the fugitives were harbored, giving you a glimpse of those turbulent times. It also includes the National Civil Rights Museum/Lorraine Motel (where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated), Beale Street (nicknamed the Home of the Blues), and neighborhoods like Soulsville, South Memphis, Uptown, as well as the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the I AM A MAN Plaza, and plenty more. Admission is $66.

Mother Emanuel AME Church against the Charleston skyline on the 5th anniversary of the murder of 9 Bible study goers.

2. Charleston’s African American History And Heritage, Charleston, South Carolina

West Africa’s contribution to the heritage and history of the Lowcountry is indisputable. Bulldog Tours explores the influence and experience of African Americans in Charleston from slavery and Jim Crow, to the Civil Rights struggle. Highlights of the 2-hour walking tour include significant sites like the Aiken Rhett House, Mother Emanuel AME Church, and the Philip Simmons Prayer Garden. Simmons was one of the most celebrated 20th century ironworkers in Charleston. He made more than 500 decorative pieces of ornamental wrought iron gates, fences, balconies, and window grills that dot the Charleston landscape. Adults are $37, children 4–12, $27, with children 3 and under free.

3. Black History River Cruise, San Antonio, Texas

Twice a month — on the second Sunday and fourth Saturday — The San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum and GO Rio River Cruises offer a 90-minute African American history tour . You’ll discover how the once richest Black man south of the Mason Dixon line got his start in San Antonio , see the location of the first “free” school for African Americans in San Antonio, learn about the African American 14-year-old male student who helped change San Antonio history, and more. Admission is $25.

4. The Black Journey: African American History Walking Tour, Philadelphia, PA

This 90-minute tour starts off in front of the Independence Visitor Center and continues across the city at some of the nation’s most important and historical sites such as The President’s House, Congress Hall, Old City Hall, First U.S. Supreme Court Building, American Philosophical Society Museum, Independence Square, Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, and Bicentennial Moon Tree — the former location of the Philadelphia Prison Site and the oldest continuous piece of land owned by people of African descent. You’ll go to Congo Square, visit the unmarked graves of free and enslaved victims of the yellow fever epidemic, and see where the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1793. Walk in the footsteps of enslaved people, abolitionists, slaveholders, and founding fathers. Tickets are $20–$35.

James Brown Journey Stop with vinyl marker - Soul Bar in Augusta, Georgia.

5. The James Brown Family Historical Tour, Augusta, Georgia

Get on the good foot. The Godfather of Soul has a special place in Black history. Nobody sang and danced quite like him. Cherish the memories with a private guided tour of his favorite haunts on a nearly 2-hour tour led by his daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas. You’ll visit his childhood home, spots where he hung out, restaurants, his elementary school, and more. Tours are $15 per person and can be set via the James Brown Family Foundation .

6. Birding The Harriet Tubman Byway, Bucktown, Maryland

Start your 4-hour adventure at the Brodess Farm Site in Bucktown. The guided drive and hike are for bird lovers. Harriet Tubman Tours and Delmarva Birding Weekends sponsor this adventure that goes along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad in Dorchester County, Maryland . You’ll learn about Tubman as you make your way through the farms, Chesapeake Bay marshes, and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, encountering some of the best birding and bald eagle watching. Cost is $65 per person.

If you want to learn more about the Underground Railroad, head north On The Way To Freedom .

7. The Real Black Wall Street Tour, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Despite the gravity of the Tulsa Race Massacre, until the 100th anniversary of the massacre this year, little was known about it. This tour will give you an education that might be painful but insightful. The tour takes place through the historic Tulsa district of Greenwood. You’ll hear the details about the people and buildings that were affected by the massacre, and the places that were bombed, including churches and schools. Warning, you might need a hanky. You’ll go through some of the neighborhoods that were leveled. Admission is $15.

8. Black History Tour, Washington, DC

Washingtonian Christopher W. vows to show you what was left out of textbooks when it comes to the contributions of African Americans with his Tours By Locals . While you’ll get the expected — like the Lincoln Memorial and the spot where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have A Dream” speech — you’ll also venture to the Frederick Douglass House, Lincoln Park, Howard University, Howard Theater, Ben’s Chili Bowl Mural, African American Civil War Memorial, and the African American History and Culture Museum during the 6-hour tour. Admission is $500 for up to four people.

9. Gullah Tour, Sandy Island, South Carolina

Just south of Murrells Inlet is Sandy Island, where many of the 120 residents are Gullah Geechee descendants, the culture that originated from West African slaves who worked on the rice plantations in the 1700s. Start the 2-hour tour at the Sandy Island Boat Ramp and take a brief boat ride to Pyatt’s General Store with its African heritage gifts, Gullah Sweetgrass baskets, and more. Then you’ll board a passenger van and make your way around the island to the Sandy Island firehouse, old gravesites, church, community center, library, and more. Admission is $35.

Freedom Crossing Monument, Niagara County, New York.

10. Freedom Seekers Heritage Tour, Niagara County, New York

The Niagara River and Gorge was an important crossing point into Canada for those using the Underground Railroad. For the freedom seekers who passed through the Niagara Frontier, the physical act of crossing the Niagara River represented the final act of courage and determination at the end of a long journey. Motherland Connextions’ tour takes you to key towns and sites. For over 3 hours you’ll visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center with its exhibits, scenic built environment, nearby murals of Harriet Tubman and freedom seekers, and more. In Lewiston, there’s the Freedom Crossing Monument on the bank of the Niagara River. The statue honors the courage of freedom seekers who sought a new life in Canada, and those who helped them on their journey across Niagara. Murphy Orchards in Burt is a farm that secretly housed enslaved people on the run in a barn. Another place of refuge is the many canals. You’ll see the Erie Canal in Lockport. The tour is $94 for adults and $67 for children.

Tourists gathered around a statue in Alexandria, Virginia, photographed by Chris Cruz of Visit Alexandria.

11. Duke Street Black History Walking Tour, Alexandria, Virginia

The 90-minute Manumission guided walking tour along the Duke Street corridor in Old Town Alexandria includes sites connected to the early Alexandria slave trade, such as the former site of Franklin & Armfield and the former Bruin Slave Jail that held the Edmonson sisters. The tour also includes sites that connect to early African Americans’ spirituality like the Shiloh Baptist Church and the Alexandria National Cemetery. You might want to check their other tours too. Freedom’s Fight in Alexandria Walking Tour highlights pre-Civil War history and the stories of runaway slaves, early abolitionists, and more. The Still’s Underground Railroad Walking Tour takes you along the downtown King Street corridor to hear about the Underground Railroad in Alexandria. The Black History in Alexandria bus tour is a 2-hour guided tour that will take you to the Freedom House Museum, Alfred Street Baptist Church, the site of the 1939 Library Sit-In, Contraband & Freedman Cemetery, and more. All Manumission Tours are $15 for adults and $12 for those 12 and under.

2-Day African American Heritage

Day 1 You'll See:

  • Bessie Smith Cultural Center
  • Booker T Washington State Park
  • Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum
  • Hunter Museum of American Art
  • Bluff View Art District

Day 2 You’ll See:

  • Tennessee Aquarium
  • National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees
  • Sallie Crenshaw Bethlehem Center

Southern Tennessee has so many historical and cultural landmarks to offer, it’s hard to find the time to see them all! Adventure Student Travel is here for you with the perfect two day plan to see the most impressive, relevant, and popular African American Heritage historical sites and landmarks. Along the way through the gorgeous Smoky Mountain battlefield sites, cultural landmarks, and history filled museums of Chattanooga you will have the chance to learn more about the local culture, take in the scenery, and eat the best Southern cuisine! The importance of cultural landmarks on the African American community in Tennessee is immense, as your group will soon see. There’s something for everybody in your group on this trip, and you are going to love the opportunity to relax and learn something new!

Bessie Smith Cultural Center- Begin your African American heritage trip around Tennessee with a visit to the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. Opened originally in 1983 under the name of the Chattanooga African American Museum, later turned into the Bessie Smith Performance Hall, then finally the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, this institution was created for the compensation for American education failure and inclusion of the contributions of African Americans in history and culture. The Bessie is now aimed toward paying homage to the late Empress of Blues, the best classic blues singer of the 1920s, Bessie Smith. Today it is considered the premier interdisciplinary culture center, dedicated to culture, education, and art. The current main exhibit is dedicated to the son of a former slave and first classic opera singer to incorporate black spiritual elements into his music, called A Tribute to Roland Hayes. Before you leave be sure to check out the gift shop for the most authentic Southeast regional artisans handicrafts, such as ceramics, art, and jewelry.

Booker T Washington State Park- Next, stretch your muscles and get some fresh air at the Booker T Washington State Park in Harrison. Booker T Washington was born into slavery and freed by the age of nine, spending the rest of his life fighting for higher education. Best known as the Tuskegee Institution president, Washington advocated agriculture and education, as is seen wonderfully in this gorgeous 353 acre state park. Located on the shores of the Chickamauga Lake (810 miles of shoreline), this state park holds an Olympic sized swimming pool, 3 immense pavilions, 30 picnic sites, camping, birding, golf, horseback riding, and the most popular activities, fishing, hiking, and biking. Hike the 5 scenic miles, bike the 7 challenging miles, or fish the 35,000 acre lake full of crappie, catfish, and bass. Learn the history of Mr. Washington in further detail throughout this area, as well as the history of the park, originally segregated for blacks only until 1964. Whatever your group decides to do here, you will have a wonderful time taking in the natural scenery and historical facts!

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum- Created in 1961, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum features a historical collection meant for the presentation, operation, interpretation, and display of railroad artifacts in an authentic setting. Aiming to educate the public of the history of the "golden age of railroading" and development in the region, this museum experience will take you on a short ride on your choice of train that is packed full of historical facts and interesting stories. Choose between the Missionary Ridge Local, Chickamauga Turn, Hiwassee Loop, Copper Hill Special or Summerville Steam engine as you learn about the 1st rail line (Western and Atlantic) in the 1850s all the way to the demise of the track after introduction of interstates and air travel in the 1960s. Your group will be drowned in facts about the use of the railroad during the Civil War, the famous beginning of that catchy Glenn Miller Song, as well as the economic advantages of having this industrial hub in early Chattanooga. Buckle up and enjoy the afternoon as you ride the rails of essential Chattanooga history!

Hunter Museum of American Art- Perched atop a scenic 80 foot bluff on the edge of the Tennessee River, the Hunter Museum of American Art serves the Chattanooga community as a cultural center, historical mecca, and important skyline icon. As the museum likes to boast, “the panoramic views here are only equaled by the excellent collection of American art inside.” This museum is one of America’s finest and aims to understand American history and teach its guests about what makes us Americans today. Inside your group will see art ranging from the colonial period up to today, including paintings, sculpture, photography, mixed media, furniture, and glass pieces. The artists range from Thomas Cole to Andy Warhol and the whole complex is filled to the brim with interesting American historical facts that were developed or affected by art. Particularly, within the 3 buildings that make up the Hunter Museum (1905 mansion, old and new galleries) your group will see 100 years of architecture, culture, and history of this region, including history of the Bluff Furnace, native american culture, and Civil War land usage here.

Bluff View Art District - Enjoy a relaxing evening stroll around the historic neighborhood downtown known as the Bluff View Art District. This, Chattanooga’s original art district, also sits high atop the stone cliffs above the Tennessee River, giving it spectacular scenic bluff top views. From here your group will be able to see the Tennessee River, downtown Chattanooga, and Walnut Street Bridge. The district itself features a few restaurants, a coffee house, an art gallery, a historic bed and breakfast, several gardens, plazas, and courtyards. The whole district will give your group a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation, as you decide to stroll around the award-winning River Gallery Sculpture Garden or explore the nationally recognized artists of the River Gallery. The district is dedicated to visual, horticultural, and culinary arts, as is made clear as you view their several dramatically landscaped gardens or eat the freshest ingredients at any of their local eateries. Your group will delight in this opportunity to relax and immerse themselves into the downtown culture.

Tennessee Aquarium- Get ready for quite the adventure at the world’s largest freshwater aquarium, the Tennessee Aquarium. Built in 1992, this nationally acclaimed attraction is located on the downtown riverfront and features two different buildings, featuring two very different types of water species. Visit the River Journey building to learn about freshwater species, and the Ocean Journey building to learn about saltwater species. Start your visit in the River Journey building, where you will see otters, trout, alligators, catfish, and turtles. You’ll actually learn here that 25% of the continents freshwater species live here, in this area! Next head over to the Ocean Journey building and see the saltier side of things, complete with penguins, stingrays, butterflies, and a full coral reef featuring tons of fish and sharks. You can also check out the IMAX for an out of this world entertainment experience or  even take a behind-the-scenes tour in which you will get to feed the animals with the staff! Protip for this location: download the free Tennessee Aquarium App on your smartphone to get complete showtimes, event schedules, maps, and tickets!

National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees- The base of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga holds the eternal flame of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, lit and dedicated in 1973 as a constant symbol of the Alliance’s permanency and heritage. The Alliance was formed in 1913 in response to the discrimination faced by early black postal employees. In the early 1900s, nearly every railway mail clerk was African American, a hazardous job that involved delivering mail via wooden cars that often times crashed. A union of people who served the nation as rank and file employees, the first industrial union in the U.S. that was open to everyone, was created to fight for fair practices within the career. The first order of business was to eliminate the photo hiring process that allowed discrimination, which took 26 years. They soon added women's rights to their repertoire after WWII for equal career benefits, and have since then seen over 100 years of reform that has benefited the mistreated minority. Visiting this eternal flame and symbol of equality will give you the sense of accomplishment and importance that the alliance has felt for a century!

Sallie Crenshaw Bethlehem Center- Your last stop on this exciting two day Tennessee adventure is at the Sallie Crenshaw Bethlehem Center. Sallie Crenshaw was Tennessee’s first female, African American ordained minister. After returning from Virginia on a church mission she was appalled to find so many black children in need of day-care, so in 1947 she helped create the original St. Elmo Mission. She originally "borrowed" a beer tavern on Elmo Avenue that was closed by law on Sundays. 65 children sat on kegs and studied the Bible as they ate crackers and juice. Soon was built a 600 dollar structure featuring 3 classrooms, a kitchen, an office, 2 bathrooms, a large chapel, and room for 130 hungry children. In 1983 the name was changed to its current status and today this center helps thousands upon thousands of children and teens get the shelter, education, and sustenance they deserve. A tour of this center will show your group the history and inspiration of Sallie Crenshaw, as well as a living example of the center’s motto "give faith, educate, grow leaders, beat the odds."
