asian tour q school 2020 results

The 2025 Asian Tour Qualifying School will see a record seven First Stage tournaments played this year in the run-up to the Final Stage at the end of the year – where lucrative playing privileges for the new season will be secured.

Mt Derrimut Golf and Community Club in Melbourne, Australia, will host the opening First Stage qualifier for the second year in succession, from September 17-20.

The School will then go coast to coast in the United States for two stages before staying in Thailand in the lead-up to the Final Stage, to be played at Lakeview Resort & Golf Club, in Hua Hin, from December 17-21.

Last year the Asian Tour made history when it staged a qualifier in the United States for the first time, at Soboba Springs Golf Club in California.

This season will build on that with the school making two visits there: first to Tesoro Club in Florida from October 29-November 1, before returning to Soboba Springs, from November 5-8.

Pattana Sports Club in Chonburi is the next stop, from December 3-6, before Grand Prix Golf Club in Kanchanaburi, Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok, and Springfield Royal Country Club, stage events simultaneously from December 10-13.

Each First Stage event will be played over four rounds, with the top-placed finishers earning places in the Final Stage – played over five rounds, with the top-35 earning their cards.

Sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg took top spot at the Final Stage of this year’s Qualifying School, played at Springfield Royal Country Club and Lake View Resort and Golf Club in Thailand.

A total of 668 players were involved in the last edition of the Qualifying School, including those who played in the six First Stage qualifiers. The Final Stage comprised 219 players from 35 nations reflecting the increasing global popularity of the Asian Tour.

Many of the Asian Tour’s most successful golfers have ascended through the Qualifying School including Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (1999) and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (2009), Australian Scott Hend (2007), and American John Catlin (2018).

Registration for the 2025 Asian Tour Qualifying School will begin on July 3, 2024. Check out asiantour.com/q-school for more information.

Aussies on Tour: Zunic, Younger best placed at Asian Tour Q School

by Tony Webeck

Jordan Zunic Webex Players Series SA

Aussies Jordan Zunic and Josh Younger are in position to play their way into the Final Stage of Asian Tour Qualifying School at the halfway mark of First Stage in Thailand.

The pair are among 11 Australians currently in action across the two qualifying sites, Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia regular Nick Voke the best of the four Kiwis through two rounds.

Zunic and Younger are both playing in Section F at Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok in Thailand’s capital while Queenslanders Sam Howse and Jake McLeod are both inside the top 60 heading into Round 3 in Section F being played at the Grand Prix Golf Club’s Composite Course in Kanchanaburi.

Zunic opened with a fine 4-under 66 in Round 1 but dropped to 2-under for the week with a 2-over 72 in Round 2. Younger went the other way on day two to join Zunic in a tie for 19th, the Victorian posting a 2-under 68 on the back of an even-par 70 in Round 1.

There are currently 17 Australians already exempt into the five-round Final Stage starting January 16 with a further 40 places being held for qualifiers from the final two First Stage tournaments.

Elsewhere this week, the withdrawal of Aaron Baddeley leaves Cam Davis as the sole Australian representative at the PGA TOUR’s Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu while Kiwis Ryan Fox and Daniel Hillier make their first appearances for 2024 at the DP World Tour’s inaugural Dubai Invitational.

asian tour q school 2020 results

More changes at the top of the leaderboard at the Asian Tour Q School and good news for Englishman Ally Mellor .  The man from the Isle of Wight shot a 1 under par 72 to move into joint first place with Eduardo Herrera of Columbia and Daisuke Maruyama of Japan.  They are all 7 under for the tournament.

Meanwhile, John Parry of Harrogate who led after two rounds dropped down to tied 6th and the best move by a Brit came from Andrew Marshall from Sutton-in-Ashfield, a regular on the European Tour until this season, whose 69 shot him up to tied 9th.

Mellor’s progress has been the most impressive out in Thailand. "I was really consistent despite it being a lot windier today. I am quite happy with my performance. I've been here for two weeks since the First Stage. I am trying to play down the pressure and take it a step at a time. I'm still adjusting to the heat but I'm looking forward to tomorrow," said Mellor.

And there lies the problem for Europeans playing regularly in Asia – the temperature and the humidity.  I played two rounds in Singapore in November a couple of years ago and it was unbelievable. There were locals dressed in four layers of linen to keep out the sun and I was barely able to walk 18 holes in the thinnest golf shirt and shorts I could find.

5 First-Stage events set for return of Asian Tour Q-School

It has been 2 years since the last Asian Tour Qualifying School and it is now back and players can start working for their places in next year’s Asian Tour.

There have been new tournaments added to the Asian Tour tournament schedule which are highly lucrative. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no Qualifying School in 2021 and 2022 which means that there will be no reshuffling of playing membership since the 2020 season.

This means that those who qualified then will still have their rights to play through 2022.

Lakeview Resort & Golf Club in Hua Hin, Thailand will host the Final Qualifying Stage where the top 35 finishers will earn their places in the Asian Tour.

5 First Stage Qualifying events will take place prior to the one in Hua Hin which is set to be played in January 18, 2023, which are:

  • Oakecreek Country Club, Arizona, United States on November 15, 2022
  • Blue Canyon Country Club’s Canyon Course, Phuket, Thailand on December 7, 2022
  • Lakes Course, Blue Canyon, Phuket, Thailand on January 4, 2023
  • Thana City Country Club, Bangkok, Thailand, January 11, 2023
  • Springfield Country Club, Hua Hin, Thailand on January 11, 2023.

Players will have to wrestle for the first-come-first-served First Qualifying Stage with the top-placed finishers earning their places in the Final Stage, a 5-round competition. After 36 holes, the top and tied 140 places will go on to rounds 3 and 4 and then it will be trimmed to the top and tied 70 places after 72 holes.

After 90 holes, the top 35 players will then be ranked for 2023.

Asian Tour: Qualifying School schedule confirmed

Asian Tour: Qualifying School schedule confirmed

The asian tour will return to thailand for the 2020 qualifying school where aspiring golf professionals from across the globe go in search of an asian tour card over a two-month period starting from january next year..

The Qualifying School, which comprises of two stages – the First Qualifying Stage and the Final Qualifying Stage – will be held at the Lake View Resort & Golf Club (Course A, B, C and D) in Hua Hin, Thailand.

The First Qualifying Stage will be played over two different weeks. Players have the option of entering the First Qualifying Stage on the week commencing January 8, or the week commencing February 12.

The top-placed players from the First Qualifying Stage will progress to the Final Qualifying Stage, which will be played over five rounds from February 19 to 23. The top 70 players (and ties) after 72 holes will play in the pivotal final round, which will be held on February 23.

At the conclusion of 90 holes, the top 35 (and ties) will be ranked accordingly for the 2020 season. Players who compete in the 2020 Qualifying School will also be eligible to play on the Asian Development Tour (ADT), which is the secondary circuit of the Asian Tour.

Asian Tour Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Cho Minn Thant is confident the 2020 Qualifying School will be another success as hopefuls aim to emulate the success of Thai duo Sadom Kaewkanjana and Kosuke Hamamoto on Tour this season.

Sadom became the fastest Qualifying School graduate to win on Tour when he won on his first professional start on Tour at the Bangabandhu Cup Golf Open earlier in April. Kosuke, on the other hand, retained his card for the 2020 season after just five starts this season.

“The competition is going to be intense but the rewards will be massive for successful entrants.” – Cho Minn Thant

“The Asian Tour has unearthed many promising talents through the Qualifying School over the years. Our recent champion Yikeun Chang of Korea is also one of them. He had topped the class in 2016 prior to his breakthrough in Chinese Taipei last month.”

"Qualifying School is a gruelling process but it gives players, both professionals and amateurs, the opportunity to earn their place on the Asian Tour in 2020. The competition is going to be intense but the rewards will be massive for successful entrants," Cho said.

Last year, Thailand’s Naras Luangphetcharaporn recorded the first-ever 59 on the Asian Tour en route to securing his Tour card for the 2019 season. The 26-year-old ended his campaign in tied-21st place and was one of the 41 players, who finished inside top 35 and ties, to earn playing rights on the Asian Tour this season.

2018 Qualifying School graduate Viraj Madappa became the youngest Indian winner on Tour when he won the TAKE Solutions Masters on home soil in his rookie season last year, at the age of 20.

American Kurt Kitayama, who also came through the 2018 Qualifying School, rose through the ranks after breaking through in Mauritius last December. The talented 26-year-old would go on to secure his maiden win on the European Tour earlier in March.

Other successful graduates include Australian Zach Murray, who won the 2019 New Zealand Open in what was his third start on Tour this season, as well as John Catlin of the United States, who marked his name in the Asian Tour history books by becoming the 10th golfer in Tour history to win three times in a single season last year.

Aussies on Tour: Warren leads Asian Tour Q School graduates

asian tour q school 2020 results

A blistering third round of 9-under 62 has catapulted New South Welshman Justin Warren to a full status on the Asian Tour in 2024.

By Tony Webeck

Warren was one of six Australians to finish inside the top 35 at Final Stage of Asian Tour Qualifying School in Thailand, Kiwi Nick Voke enduring the heartbreak of a playoff defeat for the 35th and final card.

Warren’s hopes looked decidedly slim when he opened with rounds of 72-74 but two eagles in his final four holes in Round 3 put him in position to stay within the threshold over the course of the five rounds.

He played the back nine in Round 3 in 7-under 29 and then posted 68 in both Round 4 and Round 5 to finish in a tie for third.

Veteran Sam Brazel and Maverick Antcliff were inside the top 30 all week and ultimately finished tied for 15th. The only Aussie to advance from the final round of First Stage qualifiers, Jordan Zunic finished in a tie for 21st while recent Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia winners Harrison Crowe and Lachlan Barker were also successful in obtaining cards for the 2024 season.

Elsewhere this week Min Woo Lee made an encouraging start to his first full season on the PGA TOUR with a tie for 21st, Q School medallist Harrison Endycott using a third round of 62 to start his season on the right note.

Making his first start since his Cathedral Invitational victory, Adam Scott finished in a tie for seventh at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour, Mark Hensby shot 65 in the final round to finish tied for 12th at the PGA TOUR Champions’ Mitsubishi Electric Championship and Grace Kim was 29th at the LPGA Tour Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
