43 countries you can travel VISA-FREE with UK visa [2024 edition]

Travel Countries VISA-FREE with UK visa

One of the frequent questions I get is which countries can I visit with a UK visa. The short answer is the UK. The long answer is you can travel to 40 countries and territories VISA-FREE with UK visa.

I encourage you all to get a US visa or at least a Canada visa first. Both these visas are long-term visas. These visas offer VISA-FREE travel to quite a few countries. But if you happen to have a UK visa or applying for one, then it is still better than not having any visas at all. There are about 40 countries and territories you can visit with a UK visa.

UK tourist visas are mostly short-term (C-Type) visas valid for 6 months. The UK does issue long-term visas for 5/10 years but it would cost an arm and a leg.

The UK visa application is not the most difficult, but it can be stressful due to its lengthy processing times and lack of customer service.

Can a US green card holder travel to UK without visa

Thanks for your feedback on responses. they are very helpful. My questions are: (1) I am UK citizen, my wife has Philippines passport, lives in UK and has BRP card(LTR). Can she travel to Saudi Arabia with either eVisa or VOA? (2) Can a Schengen visa be obtained online anywhere instead of travelling to the relevant embassy?

Thirumal Motati says

September 9, 2024 at 8:33 am

Hi S Duncan! (1) Philippine passport holders with UK BRP are eligible to obtain Visa on Arrival (VOA) or e-Visa. I suggest getting e-Visa, as e-Visa is processed instantly and you can download it right away. VOA is also fine as you can get your visa at the airport using the self-serve kiosks. (2) No. Schengen visa cannot be applied online. You will have to apply via VFS Global or the embassy/consulate of the Schengen country.

September 8, 2024 at 11:42 pm

Hi, so previously when traveling to these countries required showing a physical valid UK BRP card at immigration control – with the physical cards being phased out, do you know what the process would be like now?

September 9, 2024 at 8:47 am

Hi Lina! It all depends on how quickly these countries catch up with the changes. They will start accepting some other proof of residence such as UK electronic visas. The adoption will be very slow as immigration offers in these countries must learn how and where to validate these electronic visas and proofs. Some countries will catch up quickly, some in a few months and some will never. I’m monitoring the changes and will update the article accordingly.

August 21, 2024 at 3:04 pm

As of the end of the year, 2024, the UK isn’t issuing physical BRP cards any longer, and most expire then, despite peoples’ residence status being longer than that date. Everyone is being transferred to an ‘EVisa’ which is entirely digital and online.

Do you know if UK residents will be able to present a print-out or digital copy of their visa status in the UK to gain visa free access to the countries above? I’m worried the scheme will stop after this date or countries might refuse entry as there is no longer physical proof of people’s residency. Do you happen to know any more? Thanks for the great article!

September 9, 2024 at 9:11 am

Hi Chas! Some of these countries will start accepting UK digital visas as proof of residence but the adoption rate would be very slow. We’ve already seen this with Australian visas. Australia transitioned to electronic visas long time ago and some countries still do not accept eVisas as proof. Armenia is an example and they still accept only sticker visas in passport as proof.

Not all countries are as technologically advanced as the UK and may not have the resources to train their personnel on how to validate electronic visas.

I will update this article or write new ones to keep up with the changes. Make sure to refer to my website when you’re planning your trip.

As of August 2024, the “Permitted residence permits” is set to “None” for some countries i.e. Serbia or North Macedonia. Does it mean they require a visa and no BRP card is accepted?

August 15, 2024 at 3:48 pm

Hi Mahyar! Yes, those countries accept only UK visas and not UK BRPs. If a UK residence permit is in the form a visa sticker, they may accept it.

September 9, 2024 at 8:51 am

No. You need a visa for Japan. If your UK visa is a “residence” visa such as student, work, spouse, etc., you are eligible to apply for Japan eVisa. You must be residing in the UK and must upload a proof of residence such as driver’s license, utility bill, etc.

Hello team! Thank you for taking the time to create this brilliant website and answer all the comments. You have helped a lot of people in clearing their doubts about getting a tourist Visa. I’m an Indian national holding an Indian Passport living in the UK under a skilled worker Visa (Tier 2) holding a UK BRP which is valid for three years. I’m planning to visit Saudi Arabia and I have got a 6 hours layover in Romania. Do I require an Airport Transit visa If I’m leaving the visa-free zone to self-transfer for the next flight to Saudi Arabia?

Also, it is mentioned that UK Visa holders can get a Visa on Arrival for Saudi Arabia. Is it valid If I’m holding a BRP of three years validity? And is it possible If I’m boarding a Wizz Air flight from Bucharest Airport Romania or VoA is only applicable when boarding Saudi Airlines?

Thank you for your time :)

March 6, 2023 at 2:02 pm

Hi Muhammed! For Romania, you would need an airport transit visa if you are leaving the international transit area. Romania offers VISA-FREE access to those with a Schengen visa or a visa from any EU country, but unfortunately not for UK BRP holders.

Saudi Arabia offers VOA for those with permanent residency in the UK, meaning you must hold a UK ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain). Your BRP is temporary and unfortunately, you won’t be able to get VOA in Saudi Arabia based on your UK BRP.

February 23, 2023 at 6:54 am

Hi Kevin! Spain, Portugal and Italy are all Schengen countries and they DO NOT allow UK ILR or US visas. She would REQUIRE a Schengen visa to travel to any of those countries.

Hi Rasaq! You would need a Schengen visa to visit Schengen countries. But countries in Europe that do not fall under the Schengen zone can be visited using your UK BRP. Some examples are Georgia, Montenegro, Turkey, etc.

March 6, 2023 at 2:22 pm

Hi Baloch! All 27 Schengen countries including Greece do not allow UK BRPs. You would need a Schengen visa to travel to any of those 27 Schengen countries including Greece. But there are some countries in Europe that allow UK BRPs such as Albania, Montenegro, Armenia, Georgia, etc. You can find the list in this article under the section “Europe”.

UPDATED TECHNICAL NOTICE - Testing and Self-Isolation Requirements for Entry into Gibraltar - 921/2021

December 10, 2021

In response to the developing COVID-19 epidemiological situation around the world and on the advice of the Director of Public Health, HM Government of Gibraltar has amended its Civil Contingencies Emergency (Coronavirus) (Requirements on Entry into Gibraltar and Testing) Regulations. These have come into effect today, 10th December 2021.

The changes predominantly affect fully vaccinated arrivals from a country or territory in the Red List in the 10-day period preceding entry into Gibraltar. While rules for unvaccinated people remain unchanged, fully vaccinated arrivals from countries or territories in the Red List will now be required to self-isolate on the day of their arrival (Day 0) and take COVID-19 PCR tests on Day 2 and Day 8. They will be required to self-isolate until such time as they have been notified of a negative result for their Day 2 test. The emergence of Omicron variant combined with waning immunity, especially among those people who have not received their booster dose has been the key driver for this enhanced measure.

The other key change to the regulations is in respect of air arrivals from a non- Red List country who are transiting into Spain. Air passengers transiting directly to Spain will now be required to take a lateral flow test immediately upon their arrival in Gibraltar as opposed to having 24 hours in which to take this test. The provision to take the lateral flow test within 24 hours will only apply to air arrivals from a non-Red List country who will remain in Gibraltar.

Further details can be found in the Technical Notice (COVID-19 - Testing and Self-isolation Requirements for Entry into Gibraltar (Version 3.4)) and by visiting https://www.visitgibraltar.gi/covid-19 .

EXPLAINER: The latest rules around visitors to Gibraltar

can i visit gibraltar with uk brp

WITH Gibraltar benefitting from the UK’s advanced vaccination program, the country has returned to ‘normal’ in many areas, but what is needed to visit the iconic region?

Firstly, Gibraltar is open to visitors on a whole, but is mandated by a system similar to the UK’s traffic light system when it comes to what is needed to enter, but with both the UK and Spain on Gibraltar’s green list, travel restrictions are relatively low.

All arrivals will require some sort of COVID-19 test upon arrival, either a Rapid Flow Test (RFT) or a full PCR test, the former being announced as free of charge for Green list countries by the Gibraltar government last week.

All other arrivals will have to pay £30 for a RFT online when booking.

These can be booked via www.covidrapidtest.gi and will take place at the Testing Service Unit at Gibraltar airport.

These tests are required for any traveller arriving from GREEN list countries and have not visited an AMBER or RED list country in the past 14 days.

They are also required for those who have visited amber or red list countries, but have received both does of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Results of the test are available within 30-60 minutes and travellers will receive confirmation via text and an online certificate will be sent.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FROM EACH TIER COUNTRY? (non-vaccinated)

Arriving from a GREEN list country:

  • Travellers must book a free Rapid Flow test before arriving in Gibraltar.
  • The RFT must be taken within 24 hours of arrival
  • If staying for more than seven days, a second RFT must be taken on Day 5

Arriving from an AMBER list country OR have visited an AMBER list country within 14 days:

  • You must perform a COVID-19 PCR test before arriving into Gibraltar, either via the Gibraltar Health Authority for GHA card holders or via a private testing centre.
  • Any visits to AMBER list countries MUST be reported upon arrival.
  • You will be required to self isolate for 5 days and take a further PCR test on the fifth day, and remain self isolated until results from the second test are received.
  • You are NOT permitted to use public transport apart from official Gibraltar Taxis tan be booked via phone or email on Tel: (+350) 20070027 / email: [email protected]
  • You may be contacted during your stay to ensure you are complying with COVID-19 regulations.

Arriving from a RED list country OR have visited an RED list country within 14 days:

  • Any visits to RED list countries MUST be reported upon arrival.
  • You will be required to self isolate for 10 days and take a further PCR test on the tenth day, and remain self isolated until results from the second test are received.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FROM EACH TIER COUNTRY? (fully vaccinated)

  • Visitors must carry out a Free of Charge LFT upon arrival
  • Visitors must also fill in a passenger locator form
  • Visitors must carry out a LFT upon arrival costing £30
  • Arrivals will also be required to carry out a further LFT on Day 5.

Arriving from an RED list country OR have visited an RED list country within 14 days:

  • Visitors must carry out a COVID-19 PCR test
  • Arrivals will also be required to carry out a further COVID-19 PCR test on Day 5.

FERRY ARRIVALS

  • Passengers will be limited to just 200 in the Cruise Terminal at any one time
  • Terminal doors will be left open to provide air flow throughout
  • Two metre social distancing will be enforced
  • A maximum of four people will be allowed in the toilet facilities at any one time
  • Hand sanitisors will be mandatory for anyone entering or leaving the toilet facilities

Despite the Rock being partially open for hikers, various other attractions remain closed until further notice, such as the Gibraltar Nature Reserve and other Upper Rock tourist attractions, except for the Skywalk.

Throughout Gibraltar, mask use is also mandatory in enclosed spaces such as public transport and in shops, and many restrict volume of customers.

Can I travel to Europe with my UK Biometric Residence Permit?

can i visit gibraltar with uk brp

You cannot use your UK Biometric Residence Permit (“BRP”) to gain entry to Europe. But make sure to bring it with you for re-entry to the UK!

Should i bring my brp.

Your biometric residence permit card is not a travel document but a proof of immigration status in the UK. It can only be used when re-entering the UK at the border. This is why you must always bring your BRP with you when planning to travel overseas.

What documents do I need?

If you want to travel to Europe, you will need to make sure that you have a valid travel document, such as an original current passport. If you are from a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA), you may be required to apply for a Schengen visa before you travel.
