8 Best Maui Sunset Cruises For a Great Night Out

I’ve traveled all over the world and one of the things I always look forward to doing in every location is watching the sunset (and now that I have young kids I’m usually also watching the sunrise ). 

While we’ve seen some great sunsets, none compare to Maui. The sunsets here are unbelievably spectacular. Pink, purple, ombre skies that sometimes you can’t even believe are real. And while you can certainly see these sunsets from land, there’s something very special about enjoying them from the water. 

If you’re looking for a Maui sunset cruise that really wows, we have a list of the best of the best, and what makes each one so special. Living on Maui for three years we were able to experience more than our fair share of these, so we’re happy to be able to share our advice with you!

1. Sunset Live Music Cruise (Ka’anapali)

Head out onto the water with a drink in hand while being serenaded by an on-bard musician. This sunset live music cruise really knows how to have a good time. Offered every Tuesday and Thursday, you and approximately 47 other guests will board a 55’ catamaran for two hours of fun. 

Included is live music, an open bar (beer, wine, champagne, and mixed drinks), and pupus (light appetizers). 

They depart from Ka’anapali beach (how convenient!) and if you’re not staying in Ka’anapali you’ll get a 4 hour Whalers Village parking validation. Note that because of the convenient location and not needing to drive to a harbor, they do beach loading. That means you’ll be wading into the water up to your knees in order to board. Long dresses and pants aren’t ideal here. 

If you’re not interested in live music, or you can’t go on Tuesday or Thursday, they offer a regular sunset cruise (sans live music) all other days of the week. Learn more about their standard Ka’anapali sunset cocktail cruise .

2. Sunset Luau Cruise (Ma’alaea Harbor)

Can’t decide between going to a luau or enjoying a sunset cruise for an evening activity? Do both with this sunset luau cruise ! While this isn’t a true full luau, you’ll still get to experience traditional music and dance with Maui’s gorgeous sunset as a backdrop. 

You’ll board the maxi powered catamaran which leaves from Ma’alaea Harbor in central Maui (paid parking available). On board you’ll be treated to appetizers, a full dinner, and an open bar with beer, wine, and mixed drinks. During the cruise you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy Polynesian dance, which makes this experience part sunset cruise, part luau. 

The boat has a coast guard approved occupancy of 149 people, but they intentionally limit it to 60% of capacity so there’s extra space to stretch out. While this is the most expensive cruise on this list, you do get to see hula and a full dinner.

3. Catamaran Sunset Sail

Spend 2.5 hours aboard this 48 passenger, 65’ catamaran, with plenty of room to spread out. Excited for a little more adventure? Head up front to the trampolines (though you might get a bit wet). 

They have two different boat options, both leaving from Lahaina Harbor. The first is on a 65’ Catamaran, with capacity up to 48 passengers. The second cruise on the Paragon is limited to 25 passengers. 

On both, you can enjoy pupus as well as an open bar with cocktails, wine, and beer. 

Note: Due to the damage to Lahaina Harbor during the fires, Sail Maui is no longer operating from Lahaina Harbor. Book their Molokini Snorkel Tour from Ma’alaea Harbor in Central Maui to support their crew!

4. Adventure Sunset Sail

Staying in Wailea or Kihei? This is the sunset cruise you want to be on. This Adventure Sunset Sail departs from Maluaka Beach , a very convenient South Maui location. The adventure part of this sunset sail is that you get to enjoy a beach loading, which means you should expect to get wet! We happened to go out on an evening when the south swell was particularly large, so we were in for even more of an adventure! (You can see the video of our experience below). 

Once aboard the 65’ catamaran, you’ll enjoy two hours of sail time, 3 appetizer courses from The Market Maui (a great Wailea deli/restaurant), and an open bar featuring local brand like MauiWine and Ocean Vodka. 

If you haven’t rented a car or you don’t want to drive, they do offer shuttle service from Wailea hotels. But book early as this option tends to fill up! 

We loved this sunset cruise experience and we were able to go out for a great night in Wailea after it ended. Here’s a list of our favorite Wailea restaurants .

5. Lahaina, Ka’anapali, or Ma’alaea Sunset Sail

Another stellar option is this 2 hour sunset cruise which departs from three different locations on the island: Lahaina Harbor, Ma’alaea Harbor, or Ka’anapali (beach loading). 

A standout feature here is that they offer private tables for two, which makes this a great option for a romantic evening on the sea. They serve plated appetizers and there is a premium open bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. 

If you’ve taken the cruise from Lahaina Harbor, it’s just a short walk to their family-owned pizza restaurant, Kapena’s , which we highly recommend!

6. Champagne Sunset Sail

If you’re looking for a smaller group, this is the sunset sail for you. This is a sailing experience, not just a sunset cruise on their Santa Cruz 50 sailing yacht. With a capacity of only 22 people, this is a fun small group experience. 

While you won’t find as much food on this sail as you will on the others, you’ll enjoy champagne and chocolate. Guests must be 13 years or older to enjoy this experience. 

7. Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise

If you’re looking for something more than a cocktail and pupu cruise, consider a dinner cruise . Hop aboard this 65’ luxury catamaran for 2.5 hours, relax, and enjoy the spectacular scenery and service. 

You’ll depart from the beach in Ka’anapali — very convenient if you’re staying in Ka’anapali. But if you’re not, don’t worry! They give you a 4 hour parking validation for Whalers Village . Once aboard, you’ll have an open bar and a buffet dinner to enjoy. There’s something for nearly everyone when it comes to the food selection. 

Kids of all ages are welcome. But don’t wear long dresses or pants. This is a beach loading boat, which means you’ll get a bit wet while getting on and off. The convenience of this beach loading cruise can’t be beat. 

8. Luxury Sunset Sail from Ma’alaea Harbor (10% off!)

Keep it simple and luxurious with this 2 hour sunset sail. This is arguably one of the best sunset sails for spotting whales in the winter as you’ll cruise through the ‘Au’Au channel. This is the area between Lana’i and West Maui and its warm, shallow waters are a favorite of humpback whales and their calfs!

An open bar and appetizers are included in the price. While this isn’t a small tour (it welcomes up to 48 passengers), it’s a great option for families with small children because kids under 3 sail for free! Plus you’ll save 10% with our discount code!

Can you see whales on a maui sunset cruise.

You sure can! While these aren’t whale watching tours, if they come across a whale during whale season, they will absolutely stop to watch them. Whale season runs December – April , and these sunset cruises all cruise in prime whale watching locations. So the odds of seeing whales during your cruise is pretty good! 

What is the best place to watch the sunset on Maui?

Head to West or South Maui for spectacular sunset views. You’ll get amazing views both from land or from sea. What we love about a sunset cruise is that you not only get to appreciate the sunset over the water, you get to see the island lit up in the glow of the setting sun. 

What do you wear on a Maui sunset cruise?

Pretty much anything you want! Bring a light jacket or sweater, especially during the winter if you tend to get cold in the evening. There is usually a light wind and after a day of fun in the sun, it can feel a little cool. 

If you’re doing one of the beach loading tours, don’t wear long dresses or pants. Expect that your knees and below will get wet. But that’s part of the adventure of beach loading!

How long is a sunset sail on Maui?

Most sunset sails on Maui are two hours, though you will find some that run a bit longer, at 2.5 hours. But they are quick tours that will usually get you back in time for any dinner plans you have that evening.

**NOTE** If at check-in, surf conditions are deemed dangerous, guests can expect to walk 10-15 minutes north on the beach walk to a safer boarding area. Check-in location will not change.

We will be loading from the beach, you can expect to get wet up to your knees when you board. Please watch the short Beach Loading video below, taken on a small surf day. This tour is NOT recommended for guests with mobility issues. Please consider a tour with a Maalaea departure.

This excursion loads directly from the sands of world-famous Ka’anapali Beach, and you WILL get wet when loading. Please watch this quick video showing our beach-loading process during medium shore break. Please keep in mind that beach loading requires a certain level of physical fitness.   Guests with injuries or disabilities which impede mobility may find beach loading too difficult or strenuous. It is recommended that guests with mobility issues and parents with small infants , book one of our many tours departing from the Lahaina Harbor.

Sea Maui’s ’Original Sunset Cocktail Cruise’ is a Ka’anapali tradition. Sunsets at sea, viewed from Sea Maui are spectacular and during our winter months, our sunset trips are also a whale watching tour! Our guests will take in a panoramic view of Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Kahoolawe while enjoying pupus prepared by Executive Chef Joey Macadangdang and a premium open bar including local beers, white wine, champagne, light rum, dark rum, vodka, whisky, and mixers. Each night is different and special aboard Sea Maui. What better way to end your day?

This cruise departs directly from Ka’anapali beach. Check-in times vary throughout the year, please see your confirmation email to confirm your time. This trip returns to the beach just after sunset.

24 hours’ notice of cancellation is required for a full refund. Once within the 24-hour window no refunds will be honored, if rescheduling is possible a $25 fee per passenger will apply. This stable, comfortable, triple-deck catamaran leaves from centrally-located Ma’alaea Harbor. Come aboard this relaxing two-hour excursion, which gives you time to enjoy a delicious meal, explore the incredible craft, listen to great island-style music, and watch the sun go down from your place on top of the waves! Seating on the Calypso sunset dinner cruise in Maui comfortably accommodates any size group, including couples, families, and even large corporate events. You’ll find tables for two, four, eight, and ten, as well as enclaves throughout the vessel to sit and sip drinks, see the ocean from a new perspective, or hang with the kids when they need to fidget.

Explore all three decks, and take your time to find just the right spot in sun or shade. Calypso’s three restrooms are on the lowest deck. The front of the boat is the most open to sun and wind, so wear a secure hat and, as one of our lighthearted guests advised, “consider leaving your fake eyelashes on shore”! After you’ve settled in, pick up a fizzy soda, tropical juice or island themed adult beverage. Your Calypso sunset dinner cruise includes two free drinks, and once the catamaran has motored out of the harbor, you can order alcohol. Friendly crew members tend the bar, and they can bring you Mai-Tais, wine, and beer.

When it’s time for the delicious main meal enjoy  juicy prime rib. Mahi mahi, teriyaki chicken, steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes, and chocolate cake is also ready for you to eat. While you chow down, the crew comes by often to take things out of your way, ensuring that no trash ends up in the ocean. There is plenty of time to gaze at the islands of Kaho’olawe and Lana’i in the distance – not to mention the epic snorkeling site, Molokini Crater. Closer to the boat, you’ll see the Kahalawai Mountains of west Maui as they stretch toward the sky. When humpback whales are visiting the islands from Alaska, chances are excellent that you will see some of the magnificent marine mammals on your Calypso dinner cruise! Any time you do, the captain and crew are sure to get on the mic for some whale conversation. Raise your glass and cheer for a unique sunset experience in paradise with Sea Maui. We offer two exclusive sunset sail’s daily that provide various availability than other boat cruises. Enjoy a premium bar with local craft beers and handcrafted premium cocktails during the entire duration of your trip. Devour everything that is provided on this trip, including the following:

• Suit yourself with any non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks beverages during the cruise.
• Avail of unlimited alcoholic drinks in Sea Maui’s open bar.
• Have a validated parking space for 4 hours. 
• Enjoy heavy appetizers. 
• Tuesdays & Thursdays enjoy live music on board!

Departure and return details of the cruise

You can check in at the Sea Maui kiosk on the beach walk at Whalers Village, located between Leilani’s and Hula Grill, 30 minutes before departure time. You are given 4 hours of parking space for the parking structure at Whalers Village. 

After your sunset cocktail cruise, you will return to the original departure location. Your sunset dinner cruise will end right where it all started. 

Required clothes to wear and items to bring on Maui’s sunset dinner cruise

• You are expected to wear comfortable clothes.
• Bring preventative medicine or a kit if you are prone to motion sickness.
• Bringing of light jackets, cardigans, and sweaters is recommended as the temperature on the open water decreases at night.
• All alcoholic drinkers must bring a valid or government-issued photo ID. 
• Wearing sandals and flip tops are suggested for easy removal as all footwear will be collected and placed in a bin during the trip.

Cancellation Policy

• You will not get a refund for what you paid if you cancel the trip less than 24 hours prior to its starting time.
• All cut-off times are based on experience local time. 
• All changes made less than 24 hours prior to the trip will not be accepted.
• You are to receive a full refund of what you spend if you cancel at least 24 hours before your trip’s starting time. 

Restrictions

• The sunset cocktail cruise on Maui is not accessible for a wheelchair. 
• All children can join and enjoy the sunset cocktail cruise.
• Guests with mobility issues or people who have difficulty walking with assistance are not recommended to join the trip. As this is a beach-loading catamaran, walking a few steps is required to reach the dropdown staircase and get into the vessel.

• All guests must have a moderate physical fitness level.
• Sea Maui can accommodate a maximum of 48 guests. 
• All confirmation bookings will be received once booking is paid in full.

Have you are ever been in South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) at sunset and seen the silhouette of a Sailboat out in the Ocean and thought to yourself, ” wow, how nice would it be to be on that boat right now”? Well, this is that sailing catamaran!

That part of the Ocean by Makena-Wailea does not normally get the heavier trade winds like the boats departing from Maalaea.  This is truly sunset sailing at it’s best! And on such a luxurious boat! Talk about pampering, we consider the Kai Kanani to be one of the top 5 Luxury Catamarans on Maui. One of our ladies went this past Wed. night and agreed it was Five Star all the way.

You will enjoy a beautiful sunset sail aboard the luxurious Kai Kanani, which is a 56-foot Catamaran.  You will be pampered by a great crew, that will take care of your every need. Champagne is being poured and pupus( heavy appetizers) are served,  while you relax and sail into the sunset.

Complimentary Mercedes Van shuttle service from Wailea Hotels & South Kihei Resorts.  This lovely catamaran departs from Maluaka Beach, in front of the Makena Beach and Golf Resort.

There is free parking at the south end of the beach. Go early for parking and walking down to the beach.

Dress appropriately, as you might get a bit wet getting on and off the sailboat, as it is loading from the beach.

We do not recommend the ladies wearing longer dresses that could get wet while boarding/ un boarding. Same with long pants for men or women (not that anyone here wears long pants in Hawaii, even out to dinner).

Also, keep in mind that this Sunset Sail is a barefoot cruise.

If you have small children, again keep in mind you will be boarding from the beach and will carry the child on board.

What to bring or wear: Wear comfortable clothing.  We recommend bringing sunglasses, a camera, a light cover-up, and cash for crew gratuity.

As you board Calypso, Maui’s newest and super sleek catamaran, you will see why it has what is considered one of Maui’s most popular sunset cruises. Calypso is the only dinner cruise on Maui offering five delicious entree options. Also included are 2 cocktails (mixed drinks, beer & wine) and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages.

* Rosemary Garlic Roasted Prime Rib –  Hand-carved to order by the onboard chef, served with horseradish, au jus & other condiments available. * Local Fresh Island Fish (Mahi-Mahi or Ono) – Delicious local island fish served with fresh lemon, & savory Caper Beurre Blanc sauce. * BBQ Roasted Chicken Thigh Leg Combination * Kiawe Smoked Baby Back Ribs • Vegetarian Entree –  Penne Pasta with Fresh Thai Basil Marinara

To cancel your tour please call us at 808-707-7260. Our agents are available Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4 pm H.S.T.  This activity requires that cancellations be made at least 48 hours before your tour’s start time so they may authorize a full refund. If you call outside our agent hours, please leave us a message or TEXT US. We check for voicemails and texts regularly, and will process your request as soon as possible.

**Refunds on cancellations made via voicemail, email or text can only be confirmed once an agent process it with the vendor(s).**
