Derren Brown: Showman at New Theatre Oxford

About Derren Brown: Showman

Derren Brown returns to the stage with his brand-new live show!

The multi-award-winning master of mind control and psychological illusion,  Derren Brown , is at his very best on stage. His one-man shows have received wide critical acclaim and more Olivier wins and nominations than any other in history.

Now with his first brand new theatre show in six years,  Derren Brown  returns to astonish and amaze audiences up and down the country. The content of  Showman  remains a closely-guarded secret, but if you’ve seen him before, you know you’re in for a powerhouse treat.

“All I can reveal is that the show will ultimately be about you, the audience member because that’s what I find most interesting. There are places I’d like to take the audience where we haven’t been before.

“I always aim to have it deliver more than you’d expect. I’m excited to be at the starting point of that process. Getting it on the road will be my favourite part of the year.” – Derren Brown

Customer Reviews for Derren Brown - Showman

Mind blowing.

Mesmerising from start to finish. One of the best acts I've ever seen. So engaging with his audience. Thankfully it was made clear you only need to go up on stage if you want to. By chance I knew one of the volunteers who did go on stage which made it more interesting for me as I knew he wouldn't be fooled easily. I was left literally open mouthed at the end as I realised I'd been temporarily drawn into his mind control without realising which only emphasised his great talent. A true genius, the Houdini of our generation. An absolute must to go and see. Derren please don't wait too long before returning with a new show. I can't wait to see the next adventure into your creative, talented world.

Intriguing show, entertaining and mind boggling!

Derren Brown That's Life

Derren at his absolute best. Human, vulnerable, funny & warm. A Heartfelt show which many people will understand. Obviously full of terrific 'tricks' & my husband a hypnotised participant was amazing too. Fantastic Derren & much love ❤️

Can’t wait to see him again

I’d never seen Derren before and my mind was blown - such an emotional roller coaster not what I had expected at all. The best show I’ve ever seen AMAZING

Top show in London

I watched the show in London, it's one of the best show in London and I already booked tickets to watch the show again, it's unbelievable what Brown could do Infront my eyes. I want to see what happened with different audiences and different in different seat.

Loved it !!

We absolutely loved the show and are desperate to go again! From start to finish it was amazing and Derren really had our attention. There were so many ‘oh my gosh’ moments and now - a couple of days later - we are baffled. I can think of about ten different parts that blew our minds. What a clever man!!! I will now stalk him forever / gutted I have never been to see him before and only followed him on TV!!!

The show will begin a major UK tour at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe on Friday, 4 April 2025, and continue to multiple venues across the UK, including stops in Bromley, Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Nottingham, Cardiff, Bristol, Oxford, Woking, Norwich, Southend, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Sunderland, Brighton, Bournemouth, Truro, and Salford.

Tour so far

Well. Here we are. Thank you and hello and yes. About a million years ago, (when there were pirates and dinosaurs, as a friend’s young son cutely pointed out the other day) we opened in Brighton. Madly and with great delight. I switched off Twitter, missed a funeral I desperately wanted to attend, and set about trying to get the show ready for the first preview night. Weeks of exciting 7am – 1am work days and increasingly intense rehearsal spiralled blindly towards the first moment when I would step out and try, for the first time with real people, a show that cannot begin to work without real people taking part.

The first preview was a relief: it always is to receive a lovely reaction and a standing ovation to material that has never been performed before. Nonetheless there was much to change and reconsider, and material was dropped, swapped and kicked into better shape. Polly Findlay, my new director, is a complete poppet and a huge delight. Some of the team is new too: Iain and Jen are not with us this year and have been replaced by a couple of new, brilliant, lovely chaps. It’s a happy bunch, which is very important to me.

Brighton previews over, we opened the official tour in Woking. Now it was time for the show to really get up to speed and find its pace. There’s a tendency, as I don’t work from a tight script, for parts to get fleshed out inadvertently and for the energy of the whole thing to sap. Over this week and the next, In Liverpool, over twenty minutes got added to the show for no reason other than me letting parts sag here and there as I became more comfortable with it. Since then I have done some important reign-pulling and tightened it again. We had some technical difficulties in Woking, and learnt a few valuable lessons, and then heaved ourselves to Liverpool for a week with that most bustling, fun, splendid of audiences. Another brilliant in-house crew looked after us: we’ve been really spoilt so far with excellent theatre teams. It’s a big, heavy set this year to get in. The early shows packed into the back of a van: now we have two juggernauts to house all of our walloping nonsense.

Liverpool was great: the audiences and volunteers a real treat. We finished Liverpool on the Saturday and had to set up in Grimsby auditorium for the Sunday, something which turned out to be beyond our capabilities. At the time we would normally let in the audience, the crew were still building the set. It was ninety minutes late that we opened the house, to, I must say, a remarkably friendly crowd. The venue is a multiple-purpose hall and like many of those venues, you can’t hear the audience from the stage. So I came out fearing that we’d lost everyone’s goodwill, and then trotted through the opening routine to what sounded like four people barely paying attention. It took me a while to trust that people might actually be enjoying themselves. Meanwhile, the desire to make up on lost time helped me knock the pace of the show back into place.

Everything that could have gone wrong the afternoon of that show found its way to spectacularly fail. In a theatre, a huge rig is lowered to the stage and all our lights and headers and things we need to hang are hung accordingly. A hall like Grimsby Auditorium does its utmost to accommodate, but has no such rig: therefore everything has to be hoisted with motors. We broke both of their motors. One of our drivers had got waylaid on the way to the venue through no fault of his own and everything turned up late. The day was one of horrific turmoil. It was only due to the dedication of a profoundly patient, skilled and tireless in-house crew that the show went up at all.

The second night at Grimsby was, of course, super-smooth in comparison. But then the show had to be taken down and packed into those trucks. It was only a two-night run (most are a week or more). Jonas, our sensationally loveable sound and lighting guy, stayed on until the end, which happened at 4 am. He was then up at 7.30 to head down to Southend where we play tonight. Another colossal challenge for everyone involved. Apart from me. The Star. I get to nap and write up my blog…

There has been time for fun. In Liverpool I caught up with my A Level teacher from Whitgift, who is now Headmaster of Birkenhead School. And what a school, and what a headmaster. I went in to be interviewed as part of their quite excellent series of sixth-form lectures – and am sure I dropped the standard having had nothing prepared. Two top prefects – Josh and Tash – kicked off the questions and the whole thing, for me at least, was a pleasure. Afterwards the prefect team of Josh, Tash, Ed and Tom showed me around the beautiful campus. Not for the first time in recent years, I was bowled over by how much nicer pupils are now than when I ranked rather scrawnily amongst their number. How trite it is to complain about the youth of today being such and such and so and so. It’s the automatic, mindless cry of every older generation seeing a landscape of language and culture shift beneath its feet. Kids are without doubt getting nicer. There wasn’t a hint of the snickering shittiness of the class of ’89. I felt like I was meeting university students: already matured, comfortable in themselves, open, tactile, utterly charming. We were NEVER like that. And I have seen this at several schools, although I have no doubt that the residency of John Clark as Head is part of the formula for this school’s particular brand of delightfulness. As a Modern Languages teacher he was always brilliant, bright and effortlessly popular. As a Head he is hands-on, knows all his wards by name and interests, is every bit as popular, and motivated by a deep affection and pastoral urge that I found quite moving. Thank you everyone at the school for making the day such a treat for me.

From the sublime, to parrots and monkeys. Yesterday I went to visit the National Parrot Sanctuary and Zoo in Friskney, near Skegness. I am, as you may know, their Patron Saint. The big news is that they have expanded into monkeys. Any lingering stresses of Grimsby’s first night were lifted the second our shoulders were occupied by huge, friendly Macaws or glorious lemurs. All these animals are rescued, and populate the largest sanctuary of its kind on the planet. Or maybe Europe. I should check. Steve, who runs it without a break, is the greatest expert on parrots in the country – maybe Europe or the universe – and still, after twenty years of running the place, is fuelled by the most contagious passion for understanding the creatures. To listen to his stories is such a pleasure: how one night he sat outside with a glass of wine while a lone African Grey pierced the moonlight with an aria from some previous owner’s favourite opera; how he stood in an aviary and made repetitive clucking noises as part of a test to see how quickly a new sound would be picked up and disseminated amongst the bird community, only to be greeted with an extended stony silence followed by a single ‘Shut the fuck up’ from the ranks of anonymous Greys.

Coops and I were allowed into the lemur house with a dish of raisins. How extraordinary it is to have a creature with opposable thumbs feed from your hand. They don’t grab the bounty from your palm as expected: these glorious, friendly, spirit-lifting bundles of highly attentive fluffiness reach out and grab your wrist and pull your hand closer, and don’t let go until they’re done.

Delights and wonders. Do go see the zoo if you’re anywhere near that part of the world. Unlike any other zoo, where the animals pace or lie bored in a corner, here you walk past and through aviaries where the inhabitants flock to you and beg your attention with a thousand sweet hellos. You leave soaring: every bit as daft and weightless as they are.

Saw your last show in Liverpool which we though was fabulous & have been baffled trying to work out how you did certain things. I would go to another show for sure & have been singing your praises to everyone without giving any of your secrets away. Thanks

I want a lemur now..

Hi Derren Lovely to meet you at Grimsby and glad you liked the portrait. If you want a matching one of your partner you have my contact details.

thanks again for a great show.

Don’t worry about your first night in Grimsby, i was there and IT.WAS.ACE, it was so worth the wait, amazing 😀

Hey derren, so nice to hear from you again, thank you so much for the amazing night on the 18th of march in woking! Absolutely epic! Really enjoyed it, wish I could go again! You’re a legend 😀 dying to tell people who have asked me what happened, but you’ve sworn us all to secrecy hahaha so I said if they wanted to know, they’d have to go and see the show 😛 just too mindblowing for words- my explanation wouldn’t do it justice! Great to hear it’s all going well with the rest of the tour, and that parrot just looks gorgeous haha 😀 thanks again for that breathtaking night and good luck for the rest of the tour! 😀 roshni xxx

7 weeks and 1 day until Birmingham 😀 got very excited at the mention of juggernauts transporting all Derrens goodies, ooooh what’s in store for us??!! 😀 beautiful pics, so very cute both animals and Derren! Xxx

Well considering the state my girlfriend was in after our wait for you at Grimsby i’m surprised we stayed to see you haha. Although i believe waiting since christmas for your show was enough motivation she needed to stay. Anyway was an absolutely excellent show (our first seeing you live) and if stuff went wrong then i don’t think anybody cared to notice haha. I would like to ask one thing also, i wish to gather a little info on the reading of body language if you would be so kind. Psychology students have to have something to do to their friends who insist it is the study of man who believed we wanted to have sex with our mothers. It would also brighten my day to see a physicist confused over what i read in his body language haha.

Thank you Dan Undergraduate Hull Uni

Oh, it is SO illegal to kiss a monkey ! *lol*

Awww! I wanna go n play with the lemurs!! Loved the show in Brighton, can’t wait to see it again 😀

The picture of you kissing the lemur is adorable…in fact; I’ve had to make it my desktop background lol. Really hope the show went well tonight Derren. We have tickets for tomorrow’s performance and I’m thrilled you made the decision to tour again this year…bless you x Sue

This is realy cool. I went to grimsby to see you on Monday night which was awesome btw and you also pulled me good freind Dan up to the stage! And the parrot sanctuary! In Friskeny iv never been and i live in Wrangle just down the road. I realy need to make a trip there this summer to test the new camera out on the Parrots amazing patterns!

OMG, if anyone complained about the wait, SHAME ON THEM! The show exceeded expectations (i was in the finale at cliff’s). Honestly, you will give me no sleep and i have decided to take A-Level psychology because you make it so interesting.

I cant wait until i see the show, its great to see some excellent reviews. Glad to see you were able to get a bit of time out and enjoy yourselves at the zoo, we all need to retain our sanity. Knowing how much you put into each show by the time i see it, it will be beyond perfection, how can you top that?

Hi Derren Why do you do so few tour dates when they always sell out? Nothing for Nottingham yet.

Msg from Abeo: The show will also tour in 2012 when it is our intention to tour venues not played in 2011.

HaVE TICKETS TO SEE THE SHOW IN BIRMINGHAM, can’t wait.

I find your shows the hightlight of a theatre trip and so entertaining. I believe you when you say, it’s just entertainment !!!, but you are so good, I don’t want to know how you do it ……… just sit back and enjoy.

I have recently had a Epiphany moment in my life and I was compelled to put it on paper. I felt I was guided by some spirits ……… good I havce to say. I would love to share this with you and get your honest opinion.

Please reply with an email and I will send the short paper in confidence.

Thank you for entertaining me ……… you are special.

Hurry up and get your bum to Sheffield will ya!!

Hi Derren, Coops and Iain, It was so lovely to meet you all at Liverpool on Thursday. The show was amazing, anyone who hasn’t seen it is in for a real treat! Thank you also Derren for being so patient and charming with us fans after the show, you made sure that everyone had got everything they wanted signed before leaving (and you gave us a little wave from your cab). It is so lovely to meet someone who has so much time for their fans. Thank you for your lovely little messages that you put on my dvd and Portraits book, that means so much to me. Me and Mum missed the train home and had to get a cab, but it was well worth it! Lovely to meet Iain and Coops as well, both so sweet! Sorry things didn’t go smoothly at Grimsby, I hope all goes well for the rest of the tour, Love, Andrea.

P.S. LOVE the pics from the zoo. Please can everyone donate and support such places so these beautiful creatures live in such a lovely and safe environment. xx.

After reading all the comments about the show I’m SO looking forward to seeing Svengali at the Plymouth Pavilions on the 27th may!!!!!! I’ve never been to any of your live shows before so this is going to be a great experience; even more so now because I’m going to see the show with my sister and a friend. 🙂 it’s gonna be such a laugh!!!

If you like lemurs why not pay a visit to Monkey World in Dorset, they do such a wonderful job helping to rescue apes and monkeys.

Good luck with the rest of the tour and best wishes to you and all that help to put the show together. X x Hopefully you can sign my programme after the show as well! Thanks 🙂

Can’t give much away about Svengali as I’ve been sworn to secrecy, but * ****** ******** *** *** **** *** stuffed badger *** *** ********** ** *** *** ****** ******** *** grapefruit ** * ****** ** *** ********* without them being aware of it… That’s one mental image no-one in the audience will ever forget no matter how much they might want to. God knows I’ve tried. Otherwise I thought it was a fantastic show. Especially the *******

hmm seems my coment didn’t go through (thought it hadn’t prob my stupid phone as usual)

anyway i basically said I’m so sorry to hear of all the problems you’ve been having & I hope things get better from now on 😀

The photo’s look very gorgeous Derren you look totally beautiful as always can’t wait to see you next week in Braford 😉 xx take care much love & hugs Chantelle

@John Morton you don’t happen to be a karate instructor from Hull do you? that was my karate instructors name when I was a kid

“Kids are without doubt getting nicer.” I feel the same way. Thank you for putting it into words. Cowardstupidme never dared to.

I’m a little late, but thank you so much for the Monday night show in Grimsby. It was really amazing! And thank you so much for taking the time to sign my programme and take a picture. Ive been kicking myself for the past 2 days because I hardly spoke to you, I was just totally starstruck and couldn’t believe I was standing next to someone as talented and gorgeous as yourself 😉 Came home so excited to put up the pic on facebook and realised Ive lost the bloody cable! (Had to order another one off ebay – £2.69, not too bad!) Have a great rest of the tour, and to anyone who still has to see Svengali, I’m so jealous. It really is a great show! xxx

Wow that was a big blog post! Hope your having fun and Good luck to the rest of the shows. Can’t wait to see you at one of the Bristol shows. And all I can say about the pictures is Awwwwwwwwww 😀

Saturday 26th march at Liverpool was fantastic, we had excellant seats, loved every minute of it. Anyway, keep up the good work and thankyou for finding time to write your blog, xx

It’s wonderful to hear from you! I do hope everything goes well with you and I’m very much looking forward to seeing your new show in the near future.

Best wishes and Please take care of yourself. xx

Nice pictures and a great read! I hope you are enjoying the shows, I cannot wait to see you in Oxford next month for the show there. Keep up the great work Derren your a legend.

I just have to congratulate Derren on a spectacular performance at Southend last night. After a milestone in Derren’s career, I was delighted to find that this year ‘yet again’ he has managed to come up with another brilliant show. ‘Svengali’ is a masterpiece. It contains everything you would expect from a Derren Brown live performance…. and then some. There were so many ‘gasps’ from the audience that by the end of the show, you felt like you had been on an emotional rollercoaster…. If you haven’t got tickets yet, try and see the show in the west end (Shaftesbury Theatre) …it’s amazing. Thanks also goes to Coops and the rest of the team….clearly, you all worked very hard to make it a success. Sue and Paul xx

“Polly Findlay, my new director, is a complete poppet.” You might want to reconsider that description Derren. Mr. Fry says it’s a doll, used for sticking pins into. To invoke injury through use of the black arts. “he stood in an aviary and made repetitive clucking noises as part of a test to see how quickly a new sound would be picked up” Ah! I wonder if he’s the person responsible for the dawn chorus at 4am in my garden every morning. Where one of the little perishers keeps mimicking a mobile ‘phone, at two minute intervals.

Thank you for the post Derren : ) Best wishes for the rest of the tour. (Now the sanctuary has monkeys and lemurs I can see a visit to my parents coming up.)

congrats on the show opening, and good luck with the rest of the tour!

wish I could see it….oh, wait thats right. I’m all the way in America. life is cruel.

Really enjoyed reading your blog Derren; I flew down to London a couple of years ago with a friend to watch your previous show and thought it was “mind blowing”; so as a special treat for my 30th birthday in July my thoughtful sister booked tickets for us to once again fly down and see your show; I am ssssssoooooo looking forward to it and reading your blog puts a big smile on my face to think in about 3 months time I will get to see you first hand WHOOP WHOOP!!! Great snaps by the way!! All the best with the rest of the shows!!!! D 🙂

Hi me and My daughter Becky came to your Bradford show last night.I have seen every tour when it has come to Bradford but last night was Becky’s first time and she is now a total Derren convert.Being 14 she is hard to shut up at the best off times but last night she was speechless- so if nothing else a big thanks for that . Loved the show was amazing thanks for the pics and the signing after much appreciated. Our advice to anyone without tickets yet is to go snap some up Svengali has something for everyone in it! Keep being your brilliant self. Jo and Becky

Saw the show in Woking….even got to take part…..and i so want to tell everybody about it, but i’m sworn to secrecy!

The best live show I’ve seen in ages, can’t wait to come and see you again…i might stay in my seat next time!

Thanks again

Was a pleasure to see the show last night at the Bradford Alhambra, and I’m now going to try write a review saying how tremendous it was, but with the painstaking task of making sure nothing is revealed; in accordance with Derren’s wishes, of course. I just want to say that it was truly fantastic; a brilliant night that was awe-inspiring, highly amusing, and simply wonderful. I’d also like to express my thanks for signing an envelope for me – Ben – and my friend Ryan – even though we’d had to dash off home. Thankfully you took the time out to sign them for us whilst signing our friend Emily’s, and it’s great you take the time out after an exhausting show, to come out and see the fans.

Keep inspiring! Ben x

Its a shame you sign off twitter for the tour, I’ve only just signed up, ill be at your show on April 21st. Was considering proposing to my girlfriend at your show, would be nice if you could set me up, probably not possible with your water tight show though 🙂

Good luck with the tour!

You look very at home with a small animal perched on your shoulder. Very wizardy. Or perhaps piratey.

However, i do wish you’d bring the show to Manchester already! I’m bursting to see it!! Til then xx

Accidently on purpose bought front row tickets for your show in stoke for £120 I blame you for this Derren!

Hi Derren/Phylis and the rest of the gang

Cant wait to see your when your up here in sunny Scotland really really looking forward to it.

Wonder if I could ask a favour, will only take like a minute and either a blackberry or a iphone…….I am doing a youth group weekend away end of this month and we are doing a daily countdown….this consists of a wee video for like 10secs or more simply saying like 10 days to go or 9 days to go etc

Would you be willing and able to do a quickie for me 🙂 you can pick any day from 5-10 would be ace

Didn’t realise you had a blog. Yay, another thing to read to keep me sane while job hunting!

Just want to say, love your work, you’re a brilliant entertainer and hope to catch you the next time you’re in Dublin (unfortunately missed you the last time you were here).

Good luck with the Svengali tour! 🙂

Morning came to see the show in norwich last night as usual brilliant ! although extremely intriguing as to how you are able to extract the info so accurately and relieved i could just watch and not take part .Would highly recommend Svengali

Oh lucky you!! I want to kiss them too!!! 😉

I’m so excited! I’m going on Saturday at Norwich theatre Royal! Will you be at the stage door afterwards? I wan’t a signature! (Don’t worry, I’m not the straight-on-ebay kind)

Love all your work!

Brilliant show last night in Oxford. Sorry to stumble upon you and your team at the hotel, but thanks for the autograph. You were all very polite and charming. Lorraine x

I was lucky enough to see Svengali in Woking – which was fantastic! Derren was an absolute gentleman when it came to meeting him, even though he was in a rush to get somewhere! I loved it so much – I’m going again in June and July! 🙂 and… DEFINITELY NEXT YEAR! 🙂 X
