Scandinavia Explorer

15 days | tour scandinavia on a trip through norway, sweden and finland.

finland sweden norway trip

Tour Scandinavia and discover the many charms and delights on this two-week adventure through Norway, Sweden and Finland. Travel through some of Europe's most stylish capitals and be wowed by some of the world's biggest fjords. Visit Norway's uber-cool Oslo, travel to Sweden's vibrant Stockholm and explore Finland's hip Helsinki. Along the way, uncover a Viking past, learn of maritime heritage and get swept up in Olympic fever and embrace the Swedish “lagom” lifestyle away from hustle and bustle in the idyllic countryside. Whether it's walking along charming streets in Bergen or sailing through vast fjords, you'll undoubtedly be left with a multitude of memories from this once-in-a-lifetime Scandinavian adventure.

Trip overview

  • Norway's fjords feature some of the most stunning scenery on Earth. Cruise past waterfalls and snow-capped peaks through the narrow Naeroyfjord.
  • Visit Dalarna County, nestled in middle Sweden and often referred as “Sweden in miniature” for the abundance of lakes, forests, and local traditions.
  • Follow your local guide along the narrow, winding roads through genuine villages, past the typical red painted cottages and explore unique sights around Siljan lake rural settlements. You'll even get a chance to meet and mingle with the locals living in these villages.
  • Discover Stockholm's maritime history at the Vasa Museum, which houses an original wooden war ship from 1628. This impressive vessel gives you a rare glimpse into the naval power Sweden was once famous for.
  • Wind up your adventure in Helsinki for a Scandinavian culture binge. Senate Square, the market hall, the sea fortress of Suomenlinna and the Design Museum are just some of the highlights of this amazing city
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries.
  • The areas visited on this trip can be very cold at night throughout the year, especially at the start and end of the season. Please bring appropriate clothing for adverse weather conditions, including base layers, hat, gloves, scarf, coat and anything else that will keep you cosy.
  • Scandinavia can be an expensive destination in many ways, from museum entrance fees to optional activities, but especially in terms of eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on how to have the best value holiday in Scandinavia.
  • Space is at a premium in Europe and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. Occasionally bathrooms will be shared with other guests.
  • This trip is designed to give you a fair amount of free time so you can explore each destination at your own pace. We will, however, take you on regular orientation walks, so you'll be on your feet quite a lot. While this may be tiring for some, it’s the best way to get your head around a place and to set yourself up for further discoveries.
  • On this trip we predominantly travel by public transport therefore we recommend packing light and smart as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations, ferry ports and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones. Train stations often don’t have lifts available.
  • If you have more time to explore the region you can extend your trip by combining it with our 'Baltic Experience' trip, travelling from Helsinki through the Baltic States, and ending in Vilnius. Alternatively, you could start the trip in Copenhagen by combining it with our 'Taste of Scandinavia' trip.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Welcome to Norway, where you’ll discover the irresistible charm and eccentricity of Oslo. With so much to see and do in Oslo we recommend that you plan to arrive a few days before the trip begins, so you can see as much of the city as possible. Why not head to the Munch Museum to glimpse Edvard Munch's famous painting, The Scream. Your adventure begins with a important welcome meeting at 6 pm, where you'll meet your group leader and fellow travellers. Afterwards, why not seek out some traditional Norwegian fare with the group.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend the welcome meeting. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

This morning, follow your leader on an orientation walk in the city. Then enjoy some free time in Oslo. Maybe embark on some island hopping on Oslofjord, browse the harbour-front Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, taste local flavours at the food hall Vulkan, explore the immense Akershus Castle & Fortress, or check out the cool shops in the Grunerløkka district. There's so much to get stuck into.

  • Oslo - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Oslo - Holmenkollen Museum - NOK190
  • Oslo - Fram Museum - NOK140
  • Oslo - Akershus Castle & Fortress - NOK100
  • Oslo - Island Hopping on Oslofjord - NOK130
  • Oslo - Museum Edvard Munch - NOK180
  • Oslo - Resistance Museum - NOK100
  • Oslo - 24 hour Transport and Sightseeing Pass - NOK520
  • Oslo - The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History - NOK180

Today you'll leave Oslo behind and take the train across the stunning countryside of the Fjell region to Bergen. No other train ride between two cities in Europe is at a higher altitude than this one, and few can match the views passing by your window. Linking Norway's two main cities, this line takes in some spectacular scenery of lush valleys, idyllic villages, dramatic mountains and picturesque lakes as it crosses the Hardangervidda Plateau. As the trip is long and you'll arrive quite late into quirky city of Bergen, there won't be too much time to explore today (don't worry, you'll have time to explore here tomorrow). There are some great seafood restaurants in town, so possibly venture out with the group for a bite to eat this evening.

Although a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986, approximately 1000 whales are still being killed every year, as Iceland, Norway and Japan ignore the ban. We strive not to visit places that serve whale on any of our trips, however often this is unavoidable and there is a likelihood that you will come across whale meat on a menu or at a market stand.

Today's travel time is approximately 7 hours.

After breakfast this morning, join your leader for a ride by Fløibanen funicular. Taking you to 1.050 feet above the city in just seven minutes, it offers a bird eye prospective of the town and vistas of the deep blues of the sea. Those who want to get active can also continue following its multiple hiking trails. You’ll have free time in the afternoon to explore however you like. Perhaps visit World Heritage Bryggen area and wander through the reconstructed medieval homes and warehouses or visit the beautifully preserved wooden Hanseatic Museum (a former trade building), and explore the old Hanseatic port area – the Hanseatic merchant confederation dominated Baltic maritime trade for 400 years from the 15th century.

  • Bergen - Floy Mountain Funicular round trip
  • Bergen - Mt Ulriken Cable Car & Shuttle - NOK250
  • Bergen - Vidden Trail Hike - Free
  • Bergen - Bergenhus Fortress - Free
  • Bergen - Aquarium - NOK365
  • Bergen - Rosenkrantz Tower - NOK150
  • Bergen - Hakons Hall - NOK120

Leave Bergen after breakfast and travel by bus to the fjord region. The journey will take you through epic landscapes and remote regions, so have your camera at the ready. The typical Norwegian huts that you’ll stay in tonight are located in a beautiful setting, surrounded by steep cliff walls with a perfect view of the spectacular crystal clear Kjelsfossen waterfall falling from the top of the fjords. It's humbling to look up and consider these giant and ancient geological formations. Your accommodation is located near the village of Gudvangen.

  • Cabin (1 night)

The accommodation for the next two nights is in rustic cabins on a camp site in peaceful surroundings. All cabins have electricity, running water, a kitchen for self-catering and bathroom facilities that are shared between the rooms in each cabin. Bedding in the cabins is a mix of double beds, bunk beds and sofas; final allocation depends on availability and group configuration. Linen and towels are provided.

Today's travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.

Today, take a boat trip and be captivated by the sight of crisp mountain peaks reflected in the glassy waters of Naeroyfjord, a World Heritage site. The name Naeroyfjord takes its origins from the Norse god of seafarers and the sea, Njord. The fjord itself, formed by glacial erosion of the surrounding bedrock, is 18 kilometres long and only 250 metres wide at its narrowest point, but its depth reaches up to 500 metres. Surrounding mountain peaks rise up to 1400 metres and waterfalls crash down sheer cliff faces. The boat cruise will finish in fishing village of Flam, where you can ride the famous railway up to Myrdal (at extra cost). This is one of the most picturesque (and steepest) railway journeys in the country. Alternatively, explore on foot and discover nearby waterfalls and ancient moraines. Fishing enthusiasts will love the opportunity to throw a line in the crystal waters, sit back and soak up the serenity (a fishing license is required and costs around NOK 150). In afternoon, catch the bus back to Gudvangen and spend the rest of the day as you please.

  • Gudvangen - Naeroyfjord Boat Cruise to Flam (one way)
  • Gudvangen - Bike Hire - NOK350
  • Gudvangen - Kayak Hire - Half Day - NOK600
  • Flam - Cog Railway - NOK680
  • Flam - Stegastein Lookout - NOK380
  • Flam - Railway Museum - Free
  • Gudvangen - Hiking Options - Free

Please note that the Flam Railway should be booked in advance during the busy summer months. Your leader will be able to advise of the best time for this excursion should you wish to prebook this.

There will be another long bus journey ahead of us after breakfast today, as you journey to the town Alpine playground of Lillehammer. Cross vast high plains, and remote valleys, and drive through the Lærdal Tunnel, the world's longest road tunnel at 24.5 km. The tunnel is divided into four sections, broken up by ‘mountain caves’. These caves are 6 kilometres apart and equipped with special lighting to help drivers concentrate by giving off the illusion of driving into daylight. Lillehammer, which held the Winter Olympics in 1994, is picturesquely situated on Lake Mjøsa. When you arrive, head out for a brief orientation walk to find your bearings in the laid-back 19th-century town centre, along the main pedestrian street of Storgata (Big Street), lined with wooden houses, boutiques and restaurants.

Today's travel time is approximately 6 hours.

Join an orientation walk this morning and get to know Lillehammer. Your leader will take you on an included visit to the Maihaugen Open Air Museum, home of the Garmo Stave Church, which tells the story of people in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley over the last 300 years. This brilliant museum includes timber-built farms, a town and a big residential area that gives you an insight into various eras of Norway's history. The afternoon is free for you to further explore. Perhaps conquer misty mountains on a hike. As a town famous for hosting the 1994 Winter Olympics, Lillehammer has a great Olympic Museum where you can hear tales of heroic feats and is also an ideal spot for many outdoor activities.

  • Lillehammer - Maihaugen Open Air Museum
  • Lillehammer - Sigrid Undset's Home at Bjerkebæk - NOK140
  • Lillehammer - Hiking Options - Free
  • Lillehammer - Olympic Museum - NOK140

Please note some travellers choose to take part in bobsleigh activity while in Lillehammer. It is not an activity we feel is safe for novices and therefore our recommendation is to not undertake it. There are plenty of other options and our leaders will be on hand to suggest and help with pre-bookings.

Travel for around five hours by private bus today and cross the border into Sweden. Head to the lakeside town Rättvik, a laidback place that encapsulates the most Swedish of Swedish landscapes, and which sits right in the middle of the Swedish lakes. Rättvik is a location steeped in history and culture that's ready to be discovered. Dalarna county is in the heart of the Sweden and is famous for the national symbol of the wooden Dala horse. Tonight, you will stay at in a peaceful setting of local B&B located 7 km outside of Rattvik.

  • Bed and Breakfast (1 night)

You are staying at a traditional Swedish countryside which has limited dining options especially in low season. Your leader will help you to facilitate your meals during this time.

This morning you'll get a chance to get under the surface of this region with a special guided village safari with local experts. You'll get to know the history behind the villages here and learn about the traditions of the area around Lake Siljan. A truly memorable experience, you'll visit a variety of villages, discover the traditional way of life and mingle with the locals. The rest of the day is free to explore the local area and its lakes. Perhaps take a leisurely historic boat trip across the lake, sink a line to partake in a little fishing, hike around the gentle rolling surrounds or enjoy local artisan shopping.

  • Bed & Breakfast (1 night)
  • Lake Siljan - Cultural Village tour with picnic lunch
  • Lake Siljan – Historic boat trip - SEK250
  • Lake Siljan – Canoe or SUP rental - SEK150

Leaving the Swedish lakes behind, head to the country's cultural, political and economic capital of Stockholm by train. Often referred to as the 'Venice of the North' and arguably Scandinavia 's most beautiful city, Stockholm is packed full of amazing architecture, pristine parks and clear waters. After an introductory orientation walk, use the rest of your day to settle into your accommodation and explore the area around you. You can perhaps head underground for the world’s longest art exhibition. Connecting the fourteen islands of the city and blasted through hard rocky ground, the subway (Tunnelbana) system's 100 stations are like the longest modern art exhibition in the world, featuring artwork from over 140 different artists. Enjoy the narrow cobble stone streets and the colourful merchant houses. Why not soak up the culture and try a cinnamon roll in Stockholm’s oldest café Sundbergs Konditori located on Jarntorget square, and dating from 1785.

Today's travel time is approximately 4 hours.

After breakfast, go on an included visit to the Vasa Museum on the inner-city island of Djurgarden. The 17th-century warship, Vasa, sank in 1628 on her maiden voyage in the harbour of Stockholm and was salvaged only in 1961. As one of the most visited sights in Sweden, the Vasa Museum collection consists of the Vasa itself and all of the objects that were found within the ship. The rest of the afternoon is all yours to explore as you wish, so why not leave the city behind for a few hours and see the waterways of Stockholm on a cruise past tiny islets and along narrow waterways? Consider taking a self-guided Millennium Walking Tour of Stockholm or visit the Abba Museum. Alternatively, you can take a trip to Drottningholm Palace, the residence of the Swedish royal family. There are plenty of sights and attractions to keep you busy here in this great Scandinavian city, so plan your activities wisely. Tonight perhaps head to Stockholm's Sodermalm district, the inner-city island with the best nightlife, full of hip shops, bars and cafes. Or maybe sit down at one of the city’s top-notch restaurants, such as the latest venues opened on the cobblestoned islet of Gamla Stan, or in the cool fusion restaurants of Kungsholmen.

  • Overnight boat (1 night)

Please note that your cabins for the night are bunk bed cabins, however we have booked one cabin per 2 passengers to allow for a bit more room. Each cabin has a private bathroom.

After your morning arrival into Helsinki's port you will take a public transport to your hotel. Discover a wealth of historical sights and gastronomic wonders in Helsinki. Apart from a short orientation walk, today is completely free and you'll be able to explore Helsinki in your own time. A few options to consider during your time here are a visit to the city's cathedral or the interesting Design Museum. Don't miss the harbour-side market and market hall from 1889 for local oddities, and make sure you take a short ferry ride to the magnificent Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, sometimes referred to as the Gibraltar of the North, a World Heritage-listed site that was once an important point of defence for the city. Surrounded by the sea, Helsinki is a modern European city that offers an endless array of options. Throughout its 450-year history, the city has often been the buffer between the east and west. This is shown in their cuisine, with a mix of root vegetables, berries and fresh fish. Perhaps head out in the evening to sample some traditional dishes at dinner with your group.

Upon your morning arrival check-in at our hotel in Helsinki may not yet be possible. In this case, you will store your luggage at the hotel and head out for an orientation walk. You will be able to check into your room later on.

Here's How You Can Visit 3 European Countries in Just 3 Seconds

Get bragging rights forever.

finland sweden norway trip

Oliver Biallawons/Getty Images

If you're in a race to rack up as many countries on your "been there, done that" list, then we've got one very special place for you to visit that will allow you to technically be in three countries at once.

Just outside of Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden , travelers can make their way to the small village of Kilpisjärvi. There, they can set out to hike to Treriksröset, the exact point where Sweden, Finland, and Norway intersect.

There, travelers can walk out on a small wooden walkway to a cement cairn, first placed in 1897 by both the Russians and Norwegians to mark the border. (At the time, the section of Finland was owned by Russia.) It was replaced with the current cement cairn in 1926. Once you're there, you can walk the pathway around the cairn in a matter of seconds and brag to all your friends about it forever.

Though, getting to this point isn't exactly an easy feat. As Kiruna's tourism site explained , once travelers arrive in Kilpisjärvi, they can choose to hike 11 kilometers (about 6.8 miles) to the cairn. If they pick this slightly arduous path, they will at least be rewarded with walking through Malla , Finland's oldest national park.

Kiruna's website also noted that travelers can take the easier route by hopping aboard the M/S Malla , a 45-minute tourist boat to Koltaluokta that's available from midsummer to the end of September. From there, travelers just need to hike the remaining 3 kilometers (about 1.8 miles) to the final stop.

As for the return trip, the boat stops and waits for about two hours, so you just need to hustle to the cairn and get back in time for your return ride. (ThoKiruna'sna's website suggests "to take the boat there and walk back.”) Missed the boat this year? The site is then only available via snowmobile or skis, which you can do via a guided tour .

Of course, this is far from the only place where three nations intersect at a single point, which is known as a tripoint. In fact, according to Earth Observatory , the United Nations registry lists an estimated 176 tripoints around the world, with China boasting the highest number of tripoints at 16. (Note: the number is estimated due to disputed territories.)

There are also some rather famous tripoints that are a bit more accessible, including the one intersecting Germany, France, and Switzerland, and even one place with a " quadripoint " — the intersection of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. And now that you know all this, maybe "collecting tripoints" can be the new collecting passport stamps" challenge.

Excited to do a combined Norway Finland trip? I was too. Hubby and I enjoyed this scenic arctic itinerary in autumn.

The red beach of Pallas, gentle fells of Kilpisjärvi, views of Muotkatakka, the roaming Rovjok waterfall, the lively city of Tromso, the fishing village of Sommaroy, and the glacier of Blåvatnet.

If you’re an outdoor enthusiastic like us, you’re going to love this scenic arctic itinerary that features both Finland and Norway.

This itinerary makes a wonderful summer or autumn trip. It will give you incredible scenery, attractions and plenty of exercises too.

You’ll need to be in good physical health to do some of the activities in this itinerary. You’ll definitely need good hiking boots and hiking poles will be very helpful too.

This itinerary is perfect to do with a friend, spouse, or as a small group. I wouldn’t recommend it to small children. So, jump in your rental car, fill up the tank, get ready for the destination of a lifetime, and add the places below to your vacation guide.

Table of Contents

Norway & Finland trip: Tips & basic information

Rovaniemi in finland, the red beach and arctic fells of pallas, beautiful views from kilpisjärvi, the roaming rovjok waterfall, lively tromso in norway , sommaroy in norway, glacier of blåvatnet.

  • You will be crossing the border between Norway and Finland so make sure to have all needed traveling documents to travel in both countries.
  • Renting a car is usually cheaper in Finland. I recommend having some kind of navigation app or system in use.
  • If you take a ferry in Norway, the staff will take a picture of your license plate and send the invoice to you later. Our invoice arrived after 8 months and it was less than 15 euros.

7 Scenic places to visit in northern Norway and Finland

If you plan on heading towards the Arctic region this summer season and are an outdoor fan, here is a list of things everyone should add to their itineraries.

The starting point of your journey might be driving or taking the train to Lapland or arriving by plane to Rovaniemi.

FinNISH CONNECTION COLLECTION 🇫🇮

Helsinki crew neck shirt

Finland-themed sweaters and accessories made-to-order. 🧡 Worldwide shipping.

Rovaniemi is about at the Arctic circle and is one of Finland’s most popular tourist destinations, with awe-inspiring landmarks you have to see, the most important being the Santa Claus Village where you can visit Santa Claus every day.

Not in the Christmas spirit? That’s okay; you can also enjoy some time on the water, white water rafting on the Arctic river, or go Canoeing under the midnight sun. I have a complete Rovaniemi guide for you but here are some of my favorite accommodation options when in town:

Places to stay in Rovaniemi:

  • Arctic Light Hotel
  • Sokos Hotel Rovaniemi

You head north and after driving for three hours, you’ll get to our next stop in Pallas. Just a short stroll from the dirt road you’ll find the Red Beach of Pallas .

On the red beach, you’ll have lovely views to the fells. There’s also a camping place with a hut over campers, a fireplace, and an outhouse. These huts are something you’ll see across Finland in most national parks. They are a wonderful and free accommodation system for avid hikers. Very simple, but effective.

Red sand beach at Pallas Finnish Lapland

You can either stay the night in a tent on the Red Beach, continue the road trip, or then spend the night in Lapland hotel Pallas . If you stay there, don’t miss the highest peak of the National park, Taivaskero, quite nearby. It’s the place where they lit the Olympic Flame for the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952 and you’ll find a marking about this at the top. The climb requires that you are in good physical condition.

Drive further until you reach Kilpisjärvi. This road is very beautiful and my favorite time of the day is to drive it when the sun is setting and the waters on the left are shimmering in the evening light.

Our next destination is just next to the road: Muotkatakka

Before Kilpisjärvi, Muotkatakka is a great spot to stop and admire the views. It’s perfect if you are not into hiking because in Muotkatakka the ascend is quite small and the views are still wonderful. If you cannot do the arduous hike of Saana fell in Kilpisjärvi, this is definitely a must. You can find the exact location via this map link .

finland sweden norway trip

Kilpisjärvi is a village in the municipality of Enontekiö near the Norweigan border. Kilpisjarvi is the only alpine village in Finland and is famous for its lake and fells, which tourists seek out to hike and explore.

In Kilpisjärvi, you can take a boat cruise with the boat Malla to the world’s northernmost spot for three national boundaries. Take a stroll around the yellow cairn and you have been in Finland, Sweden, and Norway in seconds.

finland sweden norway trip

My favorite place to stay in Kilpisjärvi is Arctic Land Adventure where you can get up close and personal with reindeer at this Sami reindeer ranch. There are also wonderful chalets in the village center.

This is an amazing hidden gem just next to the road after you drive a short distance from the Finland-Norway border. There are clear brown signs to it. Definitely a must! If you want to go all the way down be prepared to do some proper climbing. There are no steps or no extra help for you.

finland sweden norway trip

Tromsø is the 12th most populous municipality in Norway, where it is home to many islands and mountains with amazing views and natural beauty to explore, including Tromos Fjords, which are natural, steep inlets carved by glaciers.

finland sweden norway trip

If you are looking for a little adventure, take the Fjellheisen cable car 421 meters above sea level to a panorama, where dinner is served using all local ingredients, or take advantage of the city life here by stopping by local art galleries, the local Museums, and the Historical Sites.

Sommaroy (aka Summer Island) is an island in Norway where that doesn’t set for 69 days during the summer, giving the area plenty of time to enjoy the land and water around them.

finland sweden norway trip

Sommaroy is an old fishing village with white beaches, plenty of herring fishing, and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. Once you get to this little island, you can take a Sommaroy cruise, and do a little ice fishing. We had lovely time at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel which I warmly recommend.

finland sweden norway trip

A car drive and ferry away, you can see an actual glacier. This is definitely a full-day hiking day. Come packed with snacks and water. Also swimming suit if you want to take a dip in the incredibly blue lake under the glacier.

finland sweden norway trip

There’s my list of seven wonderful arctic places to visit in Finland and Norway.

All of these places offer amazing scenery you will never forget and make the perfect sporty vacation spot whether you’re going on a romantic getaway, a fun vacation, or flying solo to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

A fantastic trip, very well organised

Most hotel choices were amazing. A fantastic trip, very well organised.

All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia

All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia; Tours to Europe took into account all of the usual highlights we wanted to visit as well as including the special family locations. The guides were knowledgeable and very helpful; all the hotels were in excellent locations and every time we had a meeting with a driver or guide they were there on time waiting for us. We had every document or ticket provided that we needed. Overall it was a wonderful and enjoyable experience.

We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well

We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well.  This added to the pleasure of our trip.  Another bonus was the record-breaking warm, sunny weather in Scandinavia which was gone for our final day in Helsinki.

Our Arctic Bucket List Itinerary for Norway + Sweden (1-2 Weeks)

February 25, 2019 by Silvia 34 Comments

When Danielle first said she was going to visit me in Norway in January I got super excited. And then the stress hit. Danielle isn’t a big fan of the cold and I knew she was pretty much only coming to see me, but I wanted to make her trip as worthwhile as possible. Plus I’m always trying to show people how magical winter in the north actually can be, so I wanted to show her the best time ever here.

And I think I succeeded!

When I put together our itinerary I focused on checking off what I consider to be the top Arctic bucket list experiences, as well as taking her to the prettiest spots in Norway.

So I thought I would share our itinerary with you guys as well.

Now, this isn’t our exact itinerary as I actually drove my car up from Mosjøen, which wouldn’t really make sense if you were renting a car. And then there was that huge blizzard that closed the main highway so I was two days late picking Danielle at the airport (this is why you should always get travel insurance when visiting Norway – the weather here can seriously mess with your plans!).

A one - two week itinerary for Arctic Norway and Sweden

Table of Contents

Day 1: Narvik

You’ll most likely get an international flight into Oslo or Trondheim, but then book a flight directly up to Evenes Airport in Narvik. You’ll rent your car for the week from here. I always rent from Sixt when I’m in Norway as they tend to have the cheapest rates and are always reliable, but you can also check RentalCars.com to compare prices at different rentals.

Once you get your car drive straight to Narvik, where you’ll be spending the night in an Arctic Dome !

This is one of my top Arctic bucket list experiences, as sleeping in a clear dome under the Northern Lights is probably the best thing ever. But even if you’re traveling in the summer sleeping in a dome is amazing, as you get such beautiful views all night long. The dome also has curtains if you want darkness while you sleep.

You can read more about our stay in Narvik’s Arctic Dome here . It’s pricey, but so, so worth it. And if you’re new to Airbnb you can get a discount by signing up here .

Day 2: Abisko/Kiruna

Today you’ll head over to Sweden!

Or at least, head over to Sweden if you’re visiting from October to March. In the summertime I actually would skip Day 2 and Day 3 of the itinerary, as the main reason for coming here is for higher chances of seeing the Northern Lights. I don’t think Kiruna is particularly beautiful in the summer, but of course it’s up to you if you still want to visit.

Cue all the Swedes coming to Kiruna’s defense, haha.

No, but Kiruna is great in the winter because not only is it an easy drive to Abisko, aka the best place to see the Northern Lights in Europe , but it’s also a center for Arctic tourism activities. So there’s so much cool stuff to do here!

Danielle and I opted for hanging out with huskies at this husky Airbnb , which I wrote more about here . But if you’re not a dog person, you could opt for staying at this reindeer Airbnb , which I wrote more about here .

However if you’re not interested in reindeer or huskies, I would instead try to stay in Abisko. There isn’t as much to do in Abisko during the day, but it is the best place to watch for the Northern Lights, thanks to its microclimate which tends to pull clouds apart from the center of the sky.

Plus Abisko is closer to Norway, so you’ll have a much shorter drive from and back to Norway, which is definitely a bonus.

My top accommodation choice in Abisko would be the  Abisko Turiststation , where you can also organize Northern Lights tours if you wish. Plus they serve delicious Swedish pancakes at their lunch buffet on Thursdays!  Check current prices and availability here

If you’re on a budget, I’ve also heard great things about  Abisko.net Hostel & Huskies . Remember that in hostels in Sweden you’ll usually have to pay extra for bedding (which usually is obligatory).

Regardless of whether you’re in Kiruna or Abisko, tonight you can watch out for the Northern Lights!

cheap airbnb kiruna sweden husky sledding

Day 3: Kiruna

Spend today out in the snow! If you’re staying with the huskies this is a great time to organize husky sledding, or they also have cross-country skies for rent, and I think they even offer snowmobile tours.

Or if you’re staying with the reindeer, feed the reindeer in the morning and maybe see what activities are on offer there.

You could also spend your first night with the reindeer and then tonight move to the husky Airbnb – they’re only a fifteen minute drive apart.

And then tonight you can chase the Northern Lights! This is a great place to see them, but if the weather is bad you could consider driving up to Abisko, which has a micro climate and clearer skies.

Day 4: Vesterålen

You have about four hours of driving today, but it’s a beautiful drive! The route over the mountain back into Norway is lovely, and then you’ll be heading to one of my favorite areas of Norway – Vesterålen.

Danielle and I stayed in this incredible cabin .

vesterålen norway airbnb

I chose to spend two nights here because staying in a cabin like this is such a Norwegian experience. A lot of people visiting Norway just hit the main tourist spots and activities (which we did as well), but they don’t really experience Norway like a local would.

Norwegians love to go to their  hytte , or cabin, and often they’ll spend their weekends and holidays at the cabin enjoying nature.

And that’s exactly what we did. This cabin is huge so you could come with lots of people, but it’s also really reasonably priced on Airbnb. And the owner is the nicest guy who also runs a nearby campground.

I would especially love to return here in the summer, as the cabin is right on a lake, which was frozen over and covered with snow when we were there. Though we did see a moose couple enjoying a stroll on the lake one morning!

vesterålen norway airbnb

There’s also a sauna here, and if you come in the winter you have to have the full experience of jumping out into the snow – it feels amazing, I swear.

vesterålen norway airbnb sauna

Day 5: Vesterålen

Today you can either hang out at the cabin, do a little road trip around Vesterålen, or drive up to Andenes to do a whale safari.

sea safari andenes whale watching norway polar night

And if you didn’t get a chance to see reindeer in Sweden you can drive over to Inga Sami Siida, which is really close to the cabin. You can read more about whale watching, reindeer, Vesterålen’s scenic route, and other things to do in Vesterålen here .

where to see reindeer near lofoten

Danielle wanted to go whale watching so we left early in the morning to get to Andenes in time for her whale safari, and then we still had a bit of daylight left so we drove back down along the scenic route.

Then in the evening you can chase the Northern Lights, enjoy the sauna, or just make a fire and enjoy the cosy Norwegian hytte life.

vesterålen norway airbnb cabin hytte

Day 6: Lofoten

Danielle and I only drove down through Lofoten as a day trip because we were short on time after the storm, but I would recommend spending a couple of nights here if you can.

This is the most touristy area on the itinerary, but it’s also the most spectacular. Plus I find that the tourist crowds tend to gather in the south around Reine, whereas the rest of the islands are relatively quiet (except maybe in July when tourism hits its peak).

My favorite place I’ve stayed in Lofoten is Svinøya Rorbuer , which is in Svolvær, the main town in Lofoten. This is a great base for activities, like this amazing sea eagle RIB safari I did , as well as a good starting point for driving around to see the islands. Check rates and availability at Svinøya Rorbuer here

Svinøya Rorbuer Svolvaer lofoten accommodation

Day 7: Lofoten

Take this second day to drive down the islands. They get more beautiful as you head south. I’ve written about some especially scenic places to visit on Lofoten here .

And then tonight you can either stay at Svinøya, if you prefer not to move around too much, or if you’d rather stay somewhere new, my second choice for Lofoten is Eliassen Rorbuer near Reine. This is in the most scenic part of Lofoten – in fact you might recognize the red cabins you’ll be staying in:

lofoten in june hamnoy norway

This is also a very touristy area of Lofoten, but aside from July it should be fine. Check current rates and availability here

Day 8: Leave or Bodø

Today you’ll return to Evenes Airport and either leave Norway, or if you have a bit more time, you could head to Bodø! Easiest would be to fly, and if you book your flight early it will actually be cheaper to fly than to take the bus.

If you end up taking the bus you’ll need to first get the airport bus to Narvik , which takes 75 minutes, and then the bus from Narvik to Bodø , which takes about six hours.

If you fly into Bodø in the morning you’ll have all day in the city. You can read more about things to do in Bodø here , and visiting Bodø in winter here .

stella polaris arctic coastal walk bodø norway

My favorite hotel in Bodø is Thon Hotel Nordlys , which has my favorite buffet breakfast in Norway. Check current rates and availability here

Bodø also has a bunch of great Airbnb options , which is especially helpful if you’re on a budget as they tend to be cheaper and have self-catering options – eating out in Norway is pricey.

Day 9: Mosjøen

Today you’ll get the train from Bodø to Mosjøen. Be sure to book your train ticket as early as possible (earliest possible is three months in advance), as early bird “mini price” tickets are heavily discounted.

Okay, so Danielle and I of course included Mosjøen in our itinerary because I wanted to show her my new home ! But actually I think Mosjøen is worth a visit even if you don’t have a bff here.

Mosjøen is such a pretty town, and personally I think the train ride from Bodø to Mosjøen is the most beautiful train ride in all of Norway – take that, Flåm. And the downtown is right by the train station, so you won’t need to worry about renting a car here.

Tonight you can stay at Fru Haugans Hotel, which is right at the end of Sjøgata, Mosjøen’s famous old street. Dating back over 200 years, Fru Haugans is Northern Norway’s oldest hotel and also has two great restaurants inside. And apparently it has always been run by women!  Check prices and availability here

If you’re on a budget, Airbnb also has a couple of great options in downtown Mosjøen.

Or you could stay at Mosjøen Hotel , which has a nice old fashioned vibe and is conveniently right across the street from the train station.

Sjøgata Mosjøen Northern Norway winter

Day 10: Mosjøen

It’s definitely worth spending another day in Mosjøen if you have the time.

You can read more about things to do in Mosjøen here .

And if you’re visiting in the winter, this will be your last chance on the trip to see the Northern Lights. We see them over the town fairly often, so you don’t even need to worry about getting somewhere dark.

northern lights mosjøen norway

Day 11: Trondheim

Danielle got an international flight out of Trondheim, and if you can do the same then you could take a couple of more days to see Trondheim as well!

If you get the morning train from Mosjøen that leaves around 9:30 am you’ll be in Trondheim by 2:30 pm, so you’ll still have a good portion of the day to explore.

I used to live in Trondheim and have written a huge guide for things to do in Trondheim here .

I’ve also written a guide to the best accommodation in Trondheim for every budget here . Currently my favorite place to stay in Trondheim is either in an Airbnb or the Best Western Chesterfield Hotel , which is right by the train station and beautiful (and affordable!).

trondheim norway winter

Day 12: Trondheim

You could either leave today or take another day to explore the city. Personally I would try to have a second day in Trondheim, but if you’re pressed for time you’ll be able to see most of the main sites in your first afternoon in Trondheim anyway.

And that’s it!

Thanks for the great post! I am planning to visit in February mainly to see the northern lights and do some other winter activities. I originally was going to go to Tromso and then to Lofoten, Abisko. For 10 days trip, would it be better to skip Tromso, because main reason for being there will be northern lights. Other activities such as dog-sledding seems to be available in Abisko.

March 24, 2019 at 1:20 pm

If you want something very easy Tromsø is a big tourist hub and has tons of Northern Lights tours. But the tours will be big and crowded (like with several buses stopped at the same viewpoints), so personally I would skip Tromsø. Abisko has much better weather so you’ll probably have the best chance of seeing the lights there, plus I prefer the vibe in Abisko and Kiruna.

Hi ya. Loved reading your blog, makes me definitey want to put Norway on my list. Do you have any idea what it would be like to visit here during the Summer (June-Sept)? or do you think that it would be better to hold off visiting during Winter season? Also, would you mind if I asked whether, in your opinion, would you say Norway is an expensive country to visit? Thank you 🙂

May 31, 2019 at 10:50 pm

I would visit later if you want to see the Northern Lights, but otherwise it would be lovely in the summer too! And yes, Norway is expensive.

Hey Silvia!

Thank you for writing this article.

We’re planning to follow this travel plan in the second half of September.

With that, I have six questions:

1. Would this travel plan make sense at that time? 2. Will there be snow? 3. Will Abisko have the northern lights? 4. Are there any special considerations I need to make if I’m traveling with a two year old? 5. How feasible/friendly is Norway for vegetarians? 6. Should we get the World Nomads Explorer insurance for all three of us (me, my wife and my baby girl!)

June 22, 2019 at 6:31 pm

1. yes, definitely! 2. probably not, but there might be snow in the mountains 3. you should have a good chance to see the Northern Lights, but of course it’s a natural phenomenon that can’t be predicted or guaranteed 4. I don’t know anything about kids 5. I have several Norwegian friends who are vegetarians, so it shouldn’t be a problem 6. yes, I definitely recommend getting insurance for all of you

Is it safe to drive (on the icy roads) from Kiruna to Vesterålen? Or in general that up north in the Lapland by yourself?

September 2, 2019 at 4:35 pm

Yes, you just need to be careful and follow weather advisories in the winter.

August 27, 2019 at 1:33 pm

Hello Silvia, Me and my friend planning to visit from mid feb to end of feb 2020. I have followi g questions.. 1. Is a good time to visit as per the weather conditions? 2. Will it be possible to drive by car that time on all the routes which you mentioned in your itrenery? 3.apart from northen lights we want to do some activities as well..like sea eagal safari, whale watching so all these activities will be avilable at time? Awaiting your reply. Thanks

September 2, 2019 at 4:06 pm

Yes, those activities will all be available then.

August 27, 2019 at 3:40 pm

Is it the good decision to make plan from mid feb to till end of feb 2020 for this iternery?

August 27, 2019 at 3:53 pm

Hello Silvia, Pls advise can i plan this iternery from mid of feb2020? 2. Will it be possible to drive by car all the place in the month of feb? ( my concern is of road closure due to snow or bad weather) Pls advise so that i can start my booking accordingly. Thanks

September 2, 2019 at 4:03 pm

We did this itinerary in early January, so you will have an easier time of it in February! But it will help if you have some experience driving in snow. If you don’t just be sure to take it slowly and you should be okay.

October 11, 2019 at 3:49 pm

Like many of the folks above, my wife and I are planning to visit in early February. It sounds like the best all-around time to visit. My only concern is the rental car. I have some experience driving in the snow, but some of these locations seem somewhat remote, and have limited daylight hours. Should I be worried about getting stuck, or not being able to reach any of these destinations?

October 14, 2019 at 10:40 pm

There’s always a chance that there could be a big storm and the roads will close. The only way to avoid getting stuck would be to fly directly to one location and stay there your entire trip, as unfortunately storms and road closures are part of life in the Arctic. But it usually only happens a few times each winter, so hopefully you wont’ be unlucky! I would buy travel insurance just in case.

October 14, 2019 at 10:53 pm

Thank you! We’re going to go for it with insurance in our back pocket.

Hi Silvia, may I know if it is possible to do this trip without a car? We may do something like this:

2-3 days Kiruna 1 day travel from Kiruna to Tromso 2-3 days Tromso

We are thinking of taking the train from Kiruna to Narvik, then Narvik to Tromso.

Would you recommend stopping by Abisko for a night, or skip it and go to Tromso straight? Can we do our own northern lights spotting in Abisko?

January 2, 2020 at 2:36 pm

hi! I love your blog. I would love to do this rode trip with my Boyfriend. woulg you recomend november a good time to do it?

Very informative blog Silvia. Got your e-book too. Good stuff.

You might have answered this millionth time – But how good is first week of October for NL? Tromso, Lofoten and now adding Abiska after reading this Blog. And second question – Apart from rental car – do we have easy public transport which connects all these places?

August 23, 2020 at 7:52 pm

October is a great time to see the northern lights! The only worry is the weather can be bad in the autumn, but to be honest that’s a problem here in the winter too, so you just have to hope for clear skies. Unfortunately there is not easy public transport here. You can look into getting a bus from Lofoten to Narvik, and from Narvik you can get the train to Abisko. And there should be a bus from Narvik to Tromsø, but I’m not sure how often it runs. If I were visiting without a car I would probably actually only visit Tromsø and take northern lights tours from there.

Hey Silvia, I’m so glad I found your blog. It’s incredibly helpful to get advice from someone who’s figured out the best ways to travel around the area. What airport would you recommend flying into from the US if we’re planning on doing a Northern Lights trip in February?

Hey Silvia. Love your articles, they’ve been really handy for planning my trip this winter. I’ve been planning on taking a train to Bode (after reading your article on it) and using that as a base to whale watch, visit lofoten and see the lights, but after reading this a road trip by car does sound appealing… My main concern though would be how to organise all the different accomodation. Did you book it all way in advance or as you went along? I love the idea of a flexible itinery but presumably it would be too hard/expensive to book last minute? Thanks in advance

Hi Silvia, Thanks for such a in depth and informative write up. It’s so helpful for someone who’s never visited that part of the world. Since you know that area well, what are your thoughts on visiting this area around X-Mas time this year? We’re planning to self drive and replicate your itinerary above. Any suggestions/tips/comments would be highly appreciated. Are the lack of daylight hours a hindrance? Would you be able to recommend any good local travel agents please? Thanks.

Our top 10 road trips in Scandinavia and Finland

Terhi Runnalls

Against the backdrop of COVID-19, road trips are one of the best ways to keep travelling. Explore our top 10 road trip suggestions for our region.

If you’re planning on travelling in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, road trips are the safest, most controlled way to do so due to the fact that you won’t be sharing a space with an undefined number of strangers. Road trips are also a fantastic option due to the fact that you see a more authentic side of any destination. Driving through the countryside allows you to see more up-close what life looks like in the quiet heart of a country, away from the trendy, fashionable capital cities.

However, despite the image of freedom and the open road, road trips actually take a significant amount of planning, particularly if you’re travelling for several days and cover hundreds of kilometres. With this in mind, we have taken the need for planning out of the equation by listing our top 10 road trip packages and itineraries in Scandinavia and Finland. Note that most of our accommodation options are charming, hand-picked boutique hotels and lodges instead of major chain hotels.

Accommodation

  • Personalise Tour

From the Arctic fjords of Norway to the stunning wilderness of Finland and the incredible ICEHOTEL® carvings of Sweden, this short-break Northern Lights adventure packs in three Nordic countries, while also giving you the chance to stay in some of the most exceptional accommodation we offer: Glass Igloos and Ice Rooms!

In Norway, you'll discover the wonderful city of Tromso. Known as the capital of the Arctic, it provides a brilliant introduction to the north, with plenty of time to explore the vibrant centre. As night falls, you'll embark on either a Northern Lights cruise or if you choose you can upgrade to an invigorating husky safari search for the Aurora (please see the 'Personalise Tour' section for full details and cost). In either case, you will leave the lights of the city behind and have the best chance of seeing the lights from a unique vantage point.

Next, you'll journey into Finland and embark on an unbelievable snowmobiling adventure, visiting the borders of each country featured on this trip. As darkness descends, you'll have the opportunity to stay in a Glass Igloo where you can hunt for the Northern Lights as you lay tucked up in your cosy bed! The igloos are situated on a reindeer ranch, so you may even have the added Lappish touch of seeing the herd walk by.

In Sweden, you'll finish your holiday in style with a night in the world's original ICEHOTEL®. This famous structure is made completely of frozen material, for one of the coolest nights you can experience. This is all metaphorical, of course, as you will be wrapped up warm in your Arctic-grade sleeping bag.

With the opportunity to Aurora hunt in three superb locations and the chance to stay in some of the most sought-after accommodation in the Arctic, this break may be short but it packs in some extremely bucket list-worthy moments.

finland sweden norway trip

Breakfast will be served in the hotel then you have a free day to explore the city. The hotel’s ideal location means you’re only a short distance away from the ‘Paris of the North’ as well as some exceptional Arctic experiences such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. See our Extras section for more information.

Tonight you will head out on the open water in search of the Northern Lights. You’ll cruise away from areas of light pollution to the very best Aurora viewpoints, determined by your guide who will use the most up-to-date forecasts. Warm clothing (if required), hot drinks are included in this activity. You will be out for around 3 hours. The starting point for this activity is a short walk away from your hotel.

If you are looking for a real taste of adventure as well as the chance to see the Aurora why not upgrade to a husky safari? In the late afternoon, you’ll be collected a short distance from your hotel and then transfer to the husky camp, where you’ll have the chance to meet the friendly huskies and be shown how to control your sled and team of dogs. Riding 2 people per sled, you’ll then set off on a safari lasting approximately 2 hours. When you return to the camp, you can relax around a campfire with warm drinks and snacks. You will be out for around 6 hours in total tonight.

finland sweden norway trip

Today is an early start (approximately 7am) as you travel to Finland. Make sure to ask the hotel reception for a boxed breakfast this morning for you to take on your journey.

The scheduled bus transfer from Tromsø to Kilpisjärvi takes around 3 hours and you’ll be accompanied by an English-speaking driver who will show you points of interest along the way. There are also hot drinks and snacks to enjoy on-board. The bus stop is only 100m from your hotel in Tromsø and if you prefer, we can arrange a private transfer to your accommodation in Finland for a supplement.

You will arrive in Kilpisjärvi, Finland at approximately 11am where you will meet your local guides and transfer to a nearby safari house to drop your luggage. You’ll have time to get changed ahead of your snowmobiling adventure. After full instructions and a safety briefing, you’ll take to the trails to explore the Finnish wilderness, on the edge of the breath-taking Malla Nature Reserve. Travelling across frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi, you’ll journey to where the borders of Finland, Sweden and Norway meet. You’ll travel 2 people per snowmobile, with a chance to swap drivers along the way, however, if you prefer, you can ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. Please note, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a full driving licence to drive a snowmobile.

You’ll return to Kilpisjärvi at approximately 2pm. After changing, you’ll be dropped off in the village at a local restaurant for lunch (which is not included and is payable locally). There is also a supermarket nearby. You’ll have approximately 1.5hrs to explore the village before being transferred a short 20-minute drive south to Vasara Reindeer Ranch where your Glass Igloo accommodation awaits.

Your accommodation is on the edge of a frozen lake, with rolling mountains in the background and it sits right in the heart of the reindeer ranch, so you may well see the iconic Lappish animals wandering around during your time here.

You’ll have a free afternoon so you could add on an authentic reindeer experience where you can meet and feed the animals. See our Extras section for more information.

Enjoy dinner in the Kota restaurant and then as night falls, you can retire to your Glass Igloo for a night of Aurora hunting from the comfort of your cosy bed.

Included Meals:   Breakfast, Dinner

finland sweden norway trip

The  ICEHOTEL®  at Jukkasjärvi has the impressive claim of being the world’s first ice hotel and was developed from a concept beginning in 1989. A local entrepreneur by the name of Yngve Bergqvist who ran a thriving tourism business in the summer decided to attract tourists in the winter by offering ice carving workshops and creating a small ice igloo as a gallery to showcase these designs.

This igloo grew in scale each year until one night a group of guests, equipped with reindeer skins and sleeping bags asked to spend the night, creating the concept of the ice hotel in the process!

Although  Ice and snow hotels  can be found across Lapland, the ICEHOTEL® remains the original.

What’s more, 2018 saw the ICEHOTEL® become the first-ever Nordic Swan Ecolabel hotel made completely of ice and snow.

The certification process looks at all areas, from energy and water consumption to waste management; understandably, this presented many challenges when measuring a hotel whose rooms melt away at the end of each winter season!

The eco-label adds to a growing list of certifications for the ICEHOTEL® who is also certified a Sustainable Arctic Destination. Certification ensures guests are choosing environmentally conscious products and the ICEHOTEL® are – rightly so – very proud to receive such recognition.

ICEHOTEL 365

The hotel now boasts ICEHOTEL 365, a permanent structure, allowing it to be a year-round destination to visitors who travel the world to sleep in a room of ice and snow. Containing deluxe rooms, art suites, an ice bar and a sculpture hall, this environmentally sustainable building is a construct of glass, metal and concrete, but with the same incredible standard and visual design of snow and ice on the inside, with cooling tubes to keep it at a temperature of around -5 at all times.

Alongside this is the classic ICEHOTEL® building, constructed purely of ice and snow and carefully crafted each December, utilising blocks from the nearby Torne River.

Home to ice rooms, winter suites and a chapel the structure is a marvel to see and, come summer, simply melts back into the river from which it came. Each year, architects, designers and artists submit designs for the hotel’s features and a handful are chosen to go forward with their theme.

The hotel consists of several buildings including the main ice building and ICEHOTEL 365. We cannot guarantee which area our guests will stay in.

The rooms which are contained within the ice and snow building will not be available until after the 14th of December. Check-in time for the cold rooms is usually around 6 pm and for the warm rooms, it is approximately 3 pm. The ICEHOTEL® is open to members of the public for viewing between 10 am and 6 pm. You will check out after breakfast.

  • The reception is in the main warm building which also houses the lounge area, warm bar, dressing room, luggage room, restaurant and gift shop which sells a selection of ICEHOTEL® themed gifts and locally sourced handicrafts
  • Guests who are on a guided tour of the ICEHOTEL® will also visit the large warehouse where you can learn about how the hotel is constructed each season
  • The restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner which include some wonderful Swedish favourites. The restaurant operates fixed dinner seating times and we highly recommend that you make a reservation in advance with us
  • As an alternative, guests can eat at the Homestead Restaurant which is a smaller, rustic restaurant a short walk from the hotel
  • The classic ICEHOTEL® building is connected to a warm building which houses the toilets, showers and sauna. There are also lockers in here in which to store your valuables and clothes overnight
  • The warm building also has a small number of bunk beds in case you decide your ice room is not for you

finland sweden norway trip

  • Your meals are all served in the restaurant in the main building. You will enjoy a variety of local dishes and more international cuisine in the evening menus (which are typically two courses and served as a hearty buffet). Breakfasts are typically Scandinavian in style and provide you with the fuel that you need for a day of adventure
  • The restaurant is situated on the upper floor of the main hotel building and offers panoramic views over the bay while you tuck into your delicious meal The lodge also has a fully stocked bar and pretty impressive wine cellar for any enthusiasts staying A short walk from the restaurant building, there is also a sauna and hot tub for guests to enjoy. Indulging in a sauna, after an exhilarating day in the great outdoors is just the perfect way to unwind and the hot tub is the cherry on the cake! This is bookable locally and charges apply

Is 'coolcation' the future of travel? Tourists shift towards cooler destinations amid climate change challenges

Heatwaves are driving tourists to cooler destinations, with the swedish tourism association suggesting a trend towards 'coolcations.'.

As heatwaves scorch southern Europe, some tourists are heading to colder destinations . Could vacation spots with cooler temperatures be the trend of the future? The Swedish tourism association, Visit Sweden, is confident that going on vacation in colder regions is a new trend that's here to stay. "Gone are the days of tirelessly chasing the scorching sun and sweltering heat," proclaims the association's website. It claims a new vacation trend is developing, the so-called coolcation — a term that derives from the words "cool" and "vacation."

In the south of Sweden, including here in Malmö, it's generally still warm enough to swim in summer.(Johan Nilsson/TT/picture alliance)

According to the Swedish tourism association, “this trend reflects travelers' growing desire to visit destinations with moderate temperatures.” As climate change brings extreme heat to southern Europe, more and more people are opting for trips in destinations with lower temperatures. After all, going on vacation in a region experiencing a heatwave can make it difficult to see the sights one came for in the first place.

Like Sweden, the Norwegian tourism promotion agency, Visit Norway, has also jumped on the bandwagon, urging travelers on its website to “escape the scorching sun and intense heat and head North for a refreshing summer vacation!” In recent years, climate change is becoming increasingly noticeable in popular vacation destinations around the Mediterranean. Spain and Italy, for example, recorded the two hottest years on record in 2022 and 2023. In Greece, record temperatures and severe drought have been compounded by fierce forest fires around the country in recent summers. Even the most optimistic forecasts by climate experts suggest the heat will continue to rise in the coming decades.

Demand is rising in the North

A study carried out by the EU Commission last year found that rising temperatures are likely to affect the tourism industry. The study deals with the effects of climate change on tourism in Europe up to the year 2100. According to the study, there is a "clear north-south pattern, with an increase in tourism demand in central and northern regions and a decrease in demand in southern regions."

The biggest loss of tourism revenue is expected in Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal, while countries expected to see the most tourism growth are Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom, among others. A recent survey by the European Travel Commission also suggests that extreme heat has a deterrent effect on tourists. According to the study, 74% of respondents stated that they are adapting to the climate crisis in part by avoiding extreme temperatures.

However, experts say it's too early to claim that tourists are changing their travel behavior — especially German tourists. "There is no trend towards cooler vacation destinations in Germany," says Martin Lohmann of the Research Association for Holidays and Travel, which studies the travel behavior of German citizens.

Last year, Germans took almost 65 million vacations, only 3.6 million of which were to northern destinations such Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway. When holidaymakers were asked about their motives for traveling, warm, sunny weather was regularly at the top of the list, says Lohmann. “If anything, this has even increased recently.” Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia and Turkey remain the most popular destinations for German travelers.

Beach vacations still in demand

The situation is similar around the rest of Europe — southern European destinations continue to be in high demand. According to the European Travel Commission (ETC), more than 300 million travelers spent their vacations in Southern Europe last year. In Northern Europe, on the other hand, the figure was just over 80 million. According to the ETC, enjoying the "sun and beach" is by far the most frequently cited reason people in Europe travel.

Although Scandinavian countries have seen an increase in the number of holidaymakers in recent years, so have countries such as Spain and Italy — despite the heatwaves. When asked by DW, neither the Swedish nor the Norwegian tourism promotion agencies were willing to confirm a decisive trend towards the "coolcation."

Sabine Klautzsch from Visit Sweden says it is difficult to say whether there is a growing desire for booking vacations in cooler climates. Margrethe Helgebostad of Visit Norway, on the other hand, points to other factors that entice tourists to Norway, like the favorable exchange rate of the Norwegian krone for foreign travelers and “good marketing.” Peter Zellmann, Head of the Vienna Institute for Leisure and Tourism Research (IFT), is convinced that the "coolcation" is no more than a “marketing invention.”

"The wish for it to be like this has led to the idea." He says there is no evidence of a trend, although Northern Europe and the Alpine region could certainly be an alternative if it should become unbearably hot in the Mediterranean. "But we're still a long way from that," says tourism expert Martin Lohmann. "It is quite possible that the topic will become more important in the future," he says. However, changes in vacation patterns due to climate change will take decades to manifest.
