Daryl Hall (L) and John Oates are going on separate solo tours in 2023. Here, they're jamming out together onstage.

We’re here to sort of “Make Your Dreams Come True.”

In 2023, Daryl Hall and John Oates are going on tour — just not together.

From May 24 through June 9, Daryl Hall and the Daryl’s House Band are taking off on an eight-concert tour that includes stops in Montclair, NJ on May 24, Port Chester, NY on June 7 and Atlantic City, NJ on June 9.

His bandmate, John Oates will play five spring shows in California, Nashville and Chicago from April 13 through May 25.

At the time of publication, none of Oates’ shows are scheduled to take place in the Northeast.

No word on whether either Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will appear at each other’s shows either.

With that being said, if you want to see half of Hall and Oates — Hall or Oates — here’s everything you need to know.

Daryl Hall 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates and venues for Hall’s eight 2023 concerts can be found below.

John Oates 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar of all John Oates tour dates is listed below.

Daryl Hall new music

Hall went old school in 2022 and dropped the rare double album.

“Before After,” comprised of 30 tracks, features Hall’s signature classic sound — the indefinable center between pop and rock.

If you want to hear the double album in its entirety, you can find “Before After” here .

John Oates new music

Last year, Oates dropped just one song — the sensual single “Pushin’ A Rock” that sounds like it could fit in a playlist next to “She’s Gone,” “Maneater” and “Rich Girl.”

In 2023, Oates went a bit more downtempo. Thus far in this young year, he’s released just one song, the ballad “Disconnected.”

You can hear both songs here .

“Say It Isn’t So” isn’t just the name of a classic Hall & Oates song — it’s the much-headlined reaction to the news that the duo that practically defines duos had a nasty and seemingly final split last year. The two, who began singing and performing together more than 50 years ago over a mutual love of soul and doo-wop music, were almost impossible to imagine without each other — even more than Simon without Garfunkel or George Michael without Andrew Ridgeley, this was more like a final split between peanut butter and jelly. It’s actually hard to imagine.

‘One Tree Hill’ Revival: James Lafferty and Bethany Joy Lenz Speak Out on Whether Nathan and Haley Will Return

Popular on variety.

He continues, “I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years. We didn’t write songs together, we didn’t do anything together except perform live shows. We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs onstage with Hall & Oates — and now I get to.”

And that’s exactly what Hall, who was always the primary songwriter in the duo, plans to do with his forthcoming sixth solo album, which reunites him with longtime collaborator and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Stewart, who produced Hall’s second solo album, “Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine,” in 1986.

Out on June 21, “D” is a reminder that Hall is one of the most talented singer-songwriters of the past half century. The first single, “Can’t Say No to You” (out today) epitomizes the sweet, street-corner Philly soul that has characterized Daryl Hall ’s music from the start of his career. Other influences appear on the album, like the Beatlesque “The Whole World’s Better,” which starts with a live audience cheering like at the start of “Sgt. Pepper,” and itself echoes that abum’s song “Getting Better.”

“I wasn’t thinking about that when I wrote it, but I totally agree with you — those clanging chords in the intro,” he says. “It was Dave’s idea to put in the crowd noise. Whatever comes out of my brain are these licks that I’ve learned in my childhood. It’s the basis of my style, my musical DNA.”

And while it might be tempting to think titles like “Rather Be a Fool,” “Not the Way I Thought It Was” and the Sly-styled Philly funk of “Why You Want to Do That to My Head” refer to the split with his former partner, Hall insists it was the furthest thing from his mind.

“These songs couldn’t be less about that,” he insisted. “I had a particularly rocky time over the past 10 years, especially over the last five with romantic relationships, and it’s also about my reactions to all the fucked-up things that are going on around me. But,” he stresses, “I never emotionally cared about Hall & Oates enough to write songs like this.”

A famously private person, Hall was divorced in 2015 from his British wife Armanda Aspinall, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 61. In “Rather Be a Fool,” he sings, “How could something be so right/ And go so wrong overnight?”

“I wrote that song in the midst of my divorce, and it was about exactly what was happening to me and my wife at the time,” he explains. “It’s very dramatic because I was writing in the middle of all this turmoil. At the end of the song, when I sang that line, it was just to see if the lyrics worked, but we kept the first take. Most of the vocals on the album were like that.”

Hall’s career renaissance began in the ‘00s, not coincidentally after he and Oates began working with Jonathan Wolfson, who took over managing the duo in 2009 after serving as their publicist for the five years before that. Hall’s ongoing web series, “Live from Daryl’s House,” which bowed in November 2007 and returned after a five-year absence last year with episodes featuring Robert Fripp, Andy Grammer, Lisa Loeb and Howard Jones.

Speaking of unexpected collaborations, Hall embarks on another solo tour, this one with Elvis Costello — with whom he duetted some 40 years ago on Costello’s “The Only Flame in Town” — starting June 2 in Troutdale, Oregon, with dates scheduled for the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on June 18, the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas on June 23 and New York’s Radio City Music Hall on July 16.

A new album, an exciting tour with an old friend, a relaunch of his beloved web series — it all would seem to add up to a fresh start for Daryl Hall. But maybe not.

“I wish I could say yes, but no, nothing’s really been resolved,” he sighs. “There’s always a weight on my mind. Every good thing that happens to me, something bad happens. I’ve accepted that. All I can say is, I’m very proud of this album. I got things off my chest, and I’m ready to get out there and sing for people.”

Hall & Oates are locked in a secret legal battle. Here's what we know about the restraining order and the lawsuit

By Dannielle Maguire

Topic: Music (Arts and Entertainment)

Daryl Hall (left) has taken out a restraining order against John Oates. ( YouTube: Daryl Hall and John Oates )

Daryl Hall of iconic pop duo Hall & Oates has filed a temporary restraining order against John Oates.

However, the details of the dispute are sealed by the court.

Let's unpack what we know.

What do the Hall vs Oates court documents say?

On November 16, Hall filed legal proceedings again Oates in Nashville, in the US state of Tennessee.

Specifics of the case are under seal, but court records publicly available on the Nashville Chancery website give us some details.

The case is listed as a "Contract/Debt" case.

It lists Oates as a defendant, as well as his wife Aimee Oates and Richard Flynn, all co-trustees of the John W Oates TISA Trust.

It shows Hall filed a motion for a temporary restraining order on November 16, which was granted the next day.

The restraining bond was set at $US50,000 ($76,000).

Then, on November 20, summons orders were issued to Oates, his wife and Mr Flynn as well as an order "clarifying the scope of temporary seal order".

It says no hearing date has been requested.

What are Hall & Oates biggest hits?

Hall & Oates got together in the 1970s, best known for their series of hit songs in the 80s.

They made it big with songs including Out of Touch, Maneater, Rich Girl and Kiss On My List.

However, among younger fans, they are perhaps best known for their 1980 song You Make My Dreams, which has become a cult favourite in recent years.

The wedding dance floor favourite has featured on movies like The Wedding Singer, Step Brothers and (500) Days of Summer.

In 2020, the duo celebrated 1 billion streams of the song.

As of Thursday morning, the official YouTube clip for the song has been viewed nearly 60 million times.

On the their 1980 album Voices, the song is just listed as You Make My Dreams.

But the words "come true" are added in brackets on Spotify and the band's website when it mentions the streaming milestone.

Why is Hall suing Oates?

We don't know.

Neither party has made a statement about the dispute.

We've contacted Hall's management, Oates's management and Hall and Oates's management.

We're yet to hear back.

How do we know about it then?

We weren't just spending the morning going through civil cases in Nashville on a whim.

It was first reported by Axois Nashville reporter Nate Rau, who tweeted about it on November 18.

Screenshots of tweets posted by Nate Rau about the Hall and Oates legal filing.

Rau is a reporter based in Nashville.  ( Twitter/X: @tnnaterau )

That was then p icked up by PhillyMag , which is based in Hall's home town.

The magazine pointed to an interview Hall gave with Bill Maher where he makes a point of telling the podcaster the difference between being creative and business partners:

"John is my brother, right, but we are not creative brothers, we are business partners. "We made records called Hall & Oates together but ... we've always been very separate ... It's a really important thing for me."

He then goes on to Hall and Oates were "separate on the records":

Maher: What does that mean? I'm not hearing the harmony? I'm not hearing what I love about ... Hall: You know that song Kiss on my List? Maher: Of course.  Hall: I did all those. That's all me.  Maher: OK. Hall: That's all me, all those harmonies, that's all me. That's just a Daryl demo. Maher: But that's not the rule, is it? With the band? Hall:  I won't go any further on that.

That interview was last year.

In May this year, Oates released a reggae version of Maneater, which he recorded without Hall.

In September this year, Oates gave an interview with People magazine , when he was asked what Hall thought of the version:

"Nope, I haven't heard from him. I'm not even sure if he has or hasn't heard it."

Oates told People he got the idea for the chorus of the song while he was in Jamaica and wanted to write it as a reggae song.

He said he fooled around with it and played to Hall who thought it was "a great hook".

"He just felt it wasn't really going to fit into what Hall & Oates were doing at the time. And he was right."

Have Hall & Oates broken up?

We've sent a request to their management, but have yet to hear back.

When you look on their website, owned by Whole Oates Enterprises, the "about" page  says the pair have embarked on their own ventures but speaks to the "enduring appeal of Daryl Hall & John Oates".

And the website launched with videos of the pair last touring together.

Here's a snap of them performing together last year:

On November 15, the Hall & Oates Facebook page's cover photo was updated to advertise a limited edition vinyl of their last studio album Home for Christmas — which came out in 2006.

That was one day before Hall filed the restraining order.

What's the latest with Hall & Oates?

We've obviously been scouring all websites and social media accounts for Hall, Oates and Hall & Oates.

Nothing suggests there's anything awry.

Oates's last post on Instagram was a few days after the restraining order was filed — it was a birthday message for his wife, Aimee:

Hall's most recent Instagram post was from earlier on Thursday, but it appears to be a scheduled post promoting his podcast.

He is, however, due to play a concert in Japan on Thursday night and has another gig scheduled for The Philippines on Monday.

Daryl Hall and John Oates are the NUMBER-ONE SELLING DUO in music history!

Beginning as two devoted disciples of earlier soul greats, Daryl Hall & John Oates are today soul survivors in their own rights. They have become such musical influences on future generations of popular artists that Spin Magazine’s September 2006 cover headline read: “Why Hall and Oates are the New Velvet Underground.” One of the most sampled artists today, their impact can be heard everywhere from boy band harmonies to neo-soul to rap-rock fusion.

Signed to Atlantic by Ahmet Ertegun in the early 1970s, Daryl Hall & John Oates have sold more records than any other duo in music history. Their 1973 album, Abandoned Luncheonette , produced by Arif Mardin, yielded the Top 10 single, “She’s Gone,” which also went to #1 on the R&B charts when it was covered by Tavares. The duo recorded one more album with Atlantic, War Babies (produced by Todd Rundgren) before they signed to RCA. Their tenure at RCA would catapult Daryl and John to international superstardom.

From the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s, the duo would score six #1 singles, including “Rich Girl,”, “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” (also #1 R&B), “Maneater” and “Out of Touch” from six multi-platinum albums—’76’s Bigger Than Both of Us , ’80’s Voices , ’81’s Private Eyes , ’82’s H2O , ’83’s Rock ’N Soul, Part 1 and ’84’s Big Bam Boom . The era would also produce an additional 8 Top 10 singles: “Sara Smile,” “You Make My Dreams (Come True),” “Did It In a Minute,” “Family Man,” “One on One,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “Adult Education” and “Method of Modern Love.”

By 1984, the R.I.A.A. recognized Daryl Hall and John Oates as the number-one selling duo in music history, a record they still hold today.

In 1985 singer Paul Young covered the Daryl-written Voices album track “Everytime You Go Away,” scoring a #1 hit and helping to establish the song as a modern standard. That same year, Daryl and John participated in the historic “We Are the World” session, reopened the legendary Apollo Theatre in the company of their heroes David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, and closed the globally broadcast Live Aid show in Philadelphia.

Across the succeeding decades, Daryl and John have continued to record and tour both individually and together, while their self-composed songs have evolved from current hits to timeless classics. In 2003, Daryl Hall and John Oates were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, followed by their 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Daryl Hall’s latest project is the multi-award-winning monthly web series and TV show, Live from Daryl’s House , which pairs him with friends, contemporaries, influences and devotees for spontaneous performances and a behind the scenes glimpse into artists at work and play. He also opened “Daryl’s House,” a restaurant and music club in Pawling, NY. “Daryl’s House,” which also serves as the backdrop for Live From Daryl’s House , aims to combine top-notch food with amazing live performances.

John Oates released his memoir, Change Of Seasons (St. Martin’s Press) in 2017. Relying on his many handwritten journals, he brings to light many fascinating stories, ranging over his entire life, with a journalist’s eye and a poet’s heart. John is creatively involved in the Nashville music scene, producing and writing for video and film projects as well as contributing to raising awareness for “Feeding America” through online virtual concerts.

Demonstrating the duo’s massive popularity across decades, generations and listening formats, in 2020 Daryl and John celebrated a milestone 1 billion streams of “You Make My Dreams (Come True).” Ubiquitous in films, commercials and playlists, the song encapsulates the essential and enduring appeal of Daryl Hall & John Oates. Their music makes people feel good. Always has, always will.

Daryl Hall is what dreams are made of for Music. Whomever he sings with is the icing on the cake. He just makes music better, performers better, musicians better. I followed his career and most concerts where I could attend. My family became instant big fans. Was also there the night of the Grand Opening Of Daryls House in New York with John Oates. Also saw him many times in New York and Pa.

Daryl when you come to Orlando this summer have Rumer and Todd Rundgren with you also. Let me know. and Thank you for the Music and lyrics. Teresa Asaro

Although Daryl Hall is consistently committed to the duo Hall & Oates, he does occasionally take to the road solo to air some of his own releases as well as covers from his infamous band. Considered to be one of the most gifted songwriters of the 20th century, it seemed pretty natural for Daryl to have a side project throughout the career and he collaborated often with esteemed producer Robert Fripp.

Although Hall & Oates have a larger pull for the fanbase, the venue is still packed out tonight for Daryl's solo headline show and as he steps onto the stage the whole audience cheer largely. He hand selects his own personal favourite work from the discography including the sincere 'Eyes for You (Ain't No Doubt About It)' along with the recognisable Hall & Oates tracks such as 'Private Eyes' and 'Man-eater'. The audience watches on in quiet anticipation as Hall keeps the show pacy before culminating in 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)' which has the whole room singing. He has saved two gems for the encore of 'Rich Girl' and 'You Make My Dreams' before he exits to even larger applause than when he appears.

Daryl Hall & John Oates are legends who continue to inspire today’s musical trailblazers. Their influence on multiple generations of musicians and songwriters is perhaps best summarized by SPIN who claimed “Hall and Oates are the new Velvet Underground.” On-the-record fans include: Cameron Crowe, Mark Ronson, Questlove, Adam Sandler, John Mayer, Booker T. Jones, Rob Thomas, Brandon Flowers, Amos Lee, Ben Gibbard and Nick Lowe.

The international multi-platinum-selling group has sold more albums than any other duo in music history. 1973’s Atlantic debut Abandoned Luncheonette and 1974’s Todd Rundgren-produced War Babies kicked off a record-breaking career that yielded six consecutive multi-platinum albums: Bigger Than Both of Us (1976), Voices (1980), Private Eyes (1981), H2O (1982), the greatest hits collection Rock N Soul, Part 1 (1983) and Big Bam Boom (1984).

John Oates goes public about legal battle with former Hall & Oates partner Daryl Hall

Hall & Oates are officially “Out of Touch.”

John Oates, half of the legendary duo responsible for hits including “You Make My Dreams Come True” and “Rich Girl,” has spoken publicly for the first time regarding the pair’s recent legal disputes.

Daryl Hall of the legendary duo Hall and Oates. For Sunday Conversation, 4/3/2022.

Daryl Hall on the ups and downs of duo-dom, his secrets to aging well and hating Jann Wenner

On the eve of a new collection of solo material, Daryl Hall holds forth on everything from Joni Mitchell and Donald Trump to his possibly Oates-less future.

March 28, 2022

The two haven’t worked together creatively in almost 20 years: Their last full studio album together was 2003’s “Do It for Love,” followed by a 2006 Christmas album that contained only two original songs. Their legal troubles began in November 2023 when Hall filed suit against Oates over the latter’s plan to sell his share of their company Whole Oats Enterprises. Hall argued that the sale would violate their business agreement, and he also requested a restraining order against Oates.

Oates said he was just frustrated by what he characterized as the company’s complex legal issues and found the company wasn’t making him happy, so he decided to bow out.

“I said, ‘You know what? Daryl has always wanted to be his own man. I’m gonna give him the opportunity to do that. If I sell my half, he can do what he wants,’” Oates said Friday on “ Good Morning America. ”

Oates didn’t seem to expect Hall to react negatively. In court documents, Hall’s lawyers described him as “blindsided” by the decision and characterized the move as the “ultimate partnership betrayal.”

Daryl Hall’s reason for restraining order against John Oates is revealed in new documents

Daryl Hall’s reason for seeking a restraining order against former music partner John Oates has been revealed in new court documents. It’s all about business.

Nov. 28, 2023

“I mean, you look at all the artists who are selling all their catalogs. … It’s not that big a deal,” Oates said. “But Daryl didn’t like the idea that I would sell to a certain third party,” whom Oates did not name.

Just as in other superstar groups split over creative or personal differences, neither star could attest to a perfect partnership.

“It’s very annoying to be a duo. People always say, ‘Oh, you’re the tall one, you’re the short one. You’re the one that sings, you’re the one that doesn’t sing,” Hall told The Times in 2022 . “You’re always compared to the other person. It works with comedy entities, like Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello, but with music, it’s f— up, actually.”

Both men have gone on to find success on their own, with Hall releasing multiple albums and the hit song “Philly Mood.” Oates released a new solo album this year, titled “Reunion,” which was inspired by the blues and folk music he was interested in before he met Hall.

Oates declared in his interview with “GMA” that despite their disagreements, he still loves Hall “like a brother.”

“Brothers have disagreements, families grow apart,” he said. “I wish him the best. I hope that he has everything he wants in life, and that he can pursue his dream of being a respected solo artist, which I believe is something that he’s always wanted.”
