Under a single, bright blue spotlight, Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, known professionally as Hozier , kicked off night one of a three-night, sold-out run of shows at Inglewood’s Kia Forum on September 17. With a haunting, booming voice and a handful of band members in tow, Hozier was greeted by thousands of fans singing along to his opening song, “De Selby (Part 1).”

Hozier is an Irish singer-songwriter who initially rose to fame with his hit “Take Me to Church,” and more recently had his first number-one hit with “Too Sweet,” which went viral on TikTok. Known for his thoughtful, challenging lyrics and knack for sticky melodies, he rose to fame with a fusion of folk and blues, and his powerful vocal skill carrying the weight of lyrical themes that cover certain religious and political stances. Hozier grew up religious, singing in choir, a skill he utilizes in his commanding choruses, and a subject he has complicated feelings about, which he tackles through unique metaphors.

Hozier interspersed songs from his entire catalog during the night’s set, which impressively contained immensely popular songs from each record. “Jackie and Wilson” is one, a fan favorite from his debut album, as shown when the audience joined in as he raised his hand in the air and flicked it backward during the line “We’ll name our children Jackie and Wilson, raise them on rhythm and blues.”  During “Dinner & Diatribes,” Hozier belted a long, sustained note that showed off his vocal chops, strengthened during his pre-fame choir time. He hilariously concluded the song with a humble, almost shy, “Thank you.”

There were also very sweet, soft moments with tunes such as “Cherry Wine,” that he performed on the B-Stage near the back of the audience. It showed off how proficient his guitar skills are, as his fingers deftly picked and played so easily and in sync that it came off almost as if his vocals and instrumentals were always in unison, never having ever existed separately.

“Francesca” also started off hushed and intimate, then crescendoed into a thundering ballad that concluded with a few life-size prop trees and their branches reaching down like arms, hanging upside down from the ceilings. Sonically and visually, it was witchy and spooky, Hozier’s trademarks.

These themes were the most present during “Movement,” a song that builds in a minor key, snakey and cunning, supporting lyrics such as “When you move, I could never define all that you are to me.” It then explodes into a major key as he sings, “So move me, baby,” urgently, with perhaps the most powerful voice I have ever heard live.

hozier tour chicago

Hozier also balanced out the intensely grand, oftentimes melancholic music with some facts about bees and how they make honey heather, which, according to Hozier, is extra “thick.” He said that over the course of the tour that he was running out of bee facts, but he still managed to find some to share.

There was also a special guest brought out, as Hozier excitedly shared before introducing Bedouine and performing “That You Are.” It was a touching moment, as the two played off of each other vocally with an intense buzz volleying between them. Another duo performance and staple of this tour’s setlist has included the opening act, Allison Russell, and their collaboration “Wildflower and Barley.” “Important, urgent, and healing,” Hozier says of Russell, singing her praises.

However, the most touching moment of the night was created by the fans, who developed a project for night one of Hozier’s Forum dates. They banded together through social media prior to the show and surprised him with an Irish flag made of lights up in the stands and viewed during “What That I” — with the top bowl holding up green paper in front of their phone lights, the lower bowl holding up just their lights, and the floor holding up orange paper during the duration of the tune. Hozier smiled bashfully multiple times during his performance, emphatically repeating, “Thank you.”

Toward the end of the evening, Hozier performed “Take Me to Church,” as clips from the music video played in the background, showing two men kissing and embracing. Hozier then hung a pride flag from his mic, walking away as the lights shut off. As mentioned previously, Hozier’s passions in his writing heavily revolve around social and political justice, which he made sure the audience knew.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from,” Hozier confidently stated. “We take for granted that every citizen should have the right to vote. That wasn’t always the case. We take for granted that women have the right to vote. That had to be fought for…. We take for granted that women should have reproductive rights…. That members of the LGBTQ+ community should have the same rights as us….”

The audience cheered in agreement, as he continued with a call to action: “If you feel called to reach out to your representatives for a ceasefire … I so strongly urge you.”

It was unique seeing an act so popular announce such strong statements to the crowd, especially at such an applicable time as during voting season. It was especially unique for an Irish act to do so on their U.S. tour. No matter an artist’s stance on an issue, in an increasingly technology heavy world, an artist’s opinions are not only heavily tied to their brand, but subsequently, fans’ perceived relationships to said artist, which, in turn, oftentimes have an immense impact on fans’ thoughts and actions.

To end his thoughts, Hozier earnestly said, “Thank you for letting me speak for the heart for a second.”

It was an apt closing statement, both in regards to its content, but also to his music. An incredible writer, Hozier has been able to sustain such an individually successful career with influences that make him stand out. His history and passions manifest into his thoughts and words, and, as with the best songwriters, you can truly tell, as he says, that he speaks from the heart.

Andrew Hozier-Byrne known by the stage name Hozier, is an Irish musician from Bray, County Wicklow who rose to prominence in 2014 following the release of his debut album and the single 'Take Me To Church'.

Andrew began his pursuit of music with a degree at Trinity College, Dublin yet decided to drop out after his first year after Universal Music showed interest in his demos so he decided to focus on this avenue. Luckily he made the right decision, in 2013 the 'Take Me to Church' EP was released through Rubyworks, Island Records and became an instant success.

The title track was an unexpected hit single in the States, peaking at #3 on the US Billboard charts. It also charted at #2 and #25 in Ireland and the UK, respectively. The huge response Hozier has received in the US has accumulated in 'Take Me To Church' receiving a nomination for Song of the Year at the 2015 Grammy awards. After the success of the single and early EPs, Hozier played a number of European festivals in the summer of 2014 including Reading & Leeds, Pukkelpop and Electric Picnic.

His debut self titled album followed in September and topped the Irish album charts, debuted at #2 in the US and #5 in the UK. It also appeared on numerous charts around the world. It features two more hit singles in his native Ireland, 'From Eden' and 'Sedated'. The album was also received well critically, holding a MetaCritic score of 78/100. He supported the release with a tour of the US and the UK which was his first chance to play the debut in full.

Live reviews

Hozier or Andrew Hozier-Byrne is an Irish singer who debuted with a serious song, Take Me To Church, which questioned religious organizations on same-sex companionship ban.

You might think he could be a super serious and intense guy, but! Andrew is actually very nice and sweet in person. He’s young and humble and constantly shows love and appreciation to his fans throughout the concert with the happiest face, and he respects everyone on the stage.

In the middle of the show, he was doing an acoustic number when he stopped mid-song as he saw someone fainted in the audience. He called the staff to take care of the person and most importantly, he stopped the show to wait for her to feel better so that she wouldn’t miss anything. He simply asked the rest of the crowd, “We’re not in a hurry, are we?”

We all stood there waiting for quite a while until Andrew picked up his guitar and started that song again from the top.

The whole performance in general was beyond awesome with his powerful voice, accompanied by fantastic chorus and violin, among the other great talents on the stage.

Later in the show, he told everybody that it was one of the band members’ birthday and opened his arm towards the drummer. He began singing Happy Birthday To You and we all sang along with him. As we got to the verse where you include the person’s name in the song, almost nobody knew his name, so we all sang:

"Happy birthday dear… drummer," and we all laughed.

The atmosphere was phenomenon. Andrew said constantly that he always has a great time every time he comes to Montreal and told everyone that he would come back again next year.

This was all the good things in the world combined.

Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known just as Hozier, is one talented Irish singer songwriter. Hailing from Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, Hozier has only just begun to take the music world by storm. His two EPs have been on repeat for as long as they’ve existed.

During his live show he has a live band with him, and always has guitar in hand. He also has two backup female vocalists that will join him during some of the songs. He draws a very large crowd, having gained a lot of fans through various social media and word of mouth, but unlike other crowds that I’ve encountered, the crowd is very loving as well as respectful. He is very soft spoken when he speaks, but when he starts to sing he really opens up, pouring all his emotions into his songs. Between each song he’d thank the crowd and introduce each song and would occasionally switch his guitars. He even talked about the songs a bit, like when he performed “To Be Alone” he spoke a bit about who influenced him in writing this particular song.

His music is appealing to a large crowd because he is so versatile. His set contained some light rock, some bluesy stuff, and acoustic songs as well. His vocals are absolutely beautiful and he does a great job of showcasing his wonderful talent.

The Irish singer/songwriter Hozier gripped me initially with his alternative style of music for singer/songwriters, as he specialises in indie rock, blues and soul. His song Take Me to Church was the track that I first fell in love with, and his gently voice accompanied by his talented backing singers is simply stunning.

Seeing him play live in a large venue, I was a bit worried that he was only going to play with a full band, and that some of the raw emotion would be lost that he transfers across in his acoustic sets. However, he played a good balance of tracks with his band, and just solo with his guitar. He opened the show with the EP From Eden, which he played through in its entirety, before moving on to his self titled album. About half way through the show he played his single Take Me To Church, which had everyone in the audience singing along from start to finish. His humble yet confident manner won over the audience, and his banter between tracks had everyone cheering and laughing for him. It was a great environment, and a brilliant artist to see live, he is incredibly talented, and will hopefully be touring for many years.

The stage was simple. No curtain or big screen. There were a few fancy swirling lights that augmented some of the more energetic selections, but the majority of the set focused on the music. Things opened up with “Angel of Small Death and the Codine Scene”. The natural granite backdrop was bathed in blue light as Hozier sang of ‘sweetened breath’ and tongues ‘so mean’ with the assistance of heavy percussion and a tough bass line that vibrated through the amphitheater. I was immediately impressed. Having found her voice and dance moves again, our daughter and her friend seemed to be feeling it as well. They could be found swaying and clapping along with everyone else during “From Eden”…and there on after. But it wasn’t until Alana Henderson got intimate with her cello that the sound really opened up. She became more than just a fixture from that point on, and as they made their way through the majority of the album, Hozier was the one to listen to, but she was the one to watch. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/08/03/hozier-dawes-red-rocks-08-02-15/#sthash.FPtbDJZs.dpuf

When I heard that Hozier was coming to Chicago, I knew I had to manage to grab a ticket to see him! I waited to buy a ticket until they were re-released and got the 10th row for $75! Hozier performed songs off of his self titled debut album and his EP From Eden.

Leading up to Hozier, the crowd thoroughly enjoyed listening to Dawes. They thoroughly entertained the crowd and were very appreciative of the crowd listening so intently. Dawes' set was about 40 minutes, so it was the perfect warm up act.

Hozier's set included a wonderful mix of his ballads and upbeat tunes and kept the crowd thoroughly entertained throughout the night. The crowd was mesmerized by Hozier's vocal range and his talents playing the guitar. He got the crowd into 'Work Song' and 'Take Me To Church' by having the audience clap and sing along. Hozier really interacted with the crowd and made everyone feel happy and welcome. Overall, it was a very memorable concert and I would definitely see him again!

If there's anything you should take from this review, it's that you should definitely try to see Hozier if you get the chance!

I am absolutely in love with Hozier's voice and talent. It was my wish since years to go to his concert. That finally happened in Munich last night.

The location was great. Unfortunately the opening of the concert was far from anything good!

A solo singer (Kevin) who had a powerful voice but could not really be able to have audiences and at some point it got really boring after the second song... He sang 5-6 songs and you could feel that the crowd is getting resltess wants him to finish up and leave.

Then we had to wait for more than 45 min for the band to show up on the stage! I have never been waiting this long in all the concerts attended to so far! We were waiting, they did not bother to give some information or some sign... Finally when the band show up nobody even apologised for such a long delay!

Despite all these, Hozier / band was great on the stage! He sang for 2 hours and almost all the songs I was so looking forward to hearing them live! I do hope to see them again but this time with much better time management and organisation!

Hozier, the soulful genius who can reach deep into your being and grab a hold of your essence is the best musician I've had the pleasure to watch live on stage. The experience was a cross between magical, spiritual and familiar. The sound was perfect, the music and lyrics fantastic as always and the voices from heaven. Hozier's voice has a depth and warmth that allows him to sing the tales of the coldest and most morbid things and make them sound romantic.

I went to all 3 shows at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and was impressed with everything. The venue is large but still very intimate, the staff were nice and friendly. There was not one bad seat in the house. The sound was clear and powerful. His high beat songs were as pleasant as his solo acoustic number with Cherry Wine that made a few people (including me) tear up. I was in the GA Pit area two of the nights. The experience was surreal. I'm still walking on cloud 9.

mojgan-ghaemmaghami’s profile image

was out of this world, best night of my life. one drawback was when andrew encouraged people to leave their seats and come down to the stage, but the venue staff turned everyone away when they tried. was pretty disheartening and upsetting but didn't let it ruin my night.

andrew and the band were in top form, and got everyone out if their seats and standing and singing along (society has so beaten everyone down in terms of expressing themselves and caring what everyone else thinks that even among a thousand people who loved one man and his music, we found difficult to show it.) so thanks andrew for not taking us at face value (a theatre full of blinking goldfish in their seats for the first few songs, forgive us, i know that i was pretty overwhelmed. and i already have huge issues with confidence without adding 1k+ people to the mix)

love you hozier, hope to see you soon, and even meet you next time <3<3<3

I first heard his stuff on Spotify and his song 'Take me to Church' became the song I kept on a repeated loop for pretty much a whole month. So when I got the email alert that Hozier was performing in Manchester, I knew then and there I had to get tickets. I'm so glad I got tickets because the gig was absolutely incredible. He sounds the same, if not better, live as he does on his album/EPs.

There weren't any techy light displays, which I thought worked better as we focused more on the music. He performed most of the material from his album with a few songs not by him, including Amerie's '1 Thing'. I wasn't familiar with the opening act, Wyvern Lingo, but despite that, I really liked them and felt their music complemented Hozier's quite well.

Overall, the gig was amazing and is definitely one of the highlights of my year so far, and I would definitely see him live again.

jasmin-cooper’s profile image

The gig itself was incredible. Hozier and the family sound as pure and perfect as they do on recordings - it's insane how amazing they are! The engagement with the audience was on point too - Hozier is a warm and welcoming showman, with a definite ear for his audience and a love for performing that shows at every turn.

Kudos to David Keenan for opening the show. He has a unique style that I'm sure will serve him well in the years to come. Purchased the vinyl to play as soon as I got home.

As for City Hall itself, I have never been to watch music before (just stand-up shows or 'An Audience With...' nights) but I have to say, the acoustics are phenomenal. Because of the layout, everything feels intimate and the view was outstanding from most points in the auditorium.

A fantastic night!

Live Review: Hozier at Metro • Chicago

Chicago, IL

May 16, 2023

By Aubrey Vernon

Irish singer/songwriter Hozier’s “pop-up show” at Metro was, as expected, a uniquely intimate moment for lucky fans who were able to score tickets at the iconic 1100-seat venue. 2023 promises to be a good year for Andrew Hozier-Byrne, who just announced his third album (with an August 18th drop date),  Unreal Unearth,  which includes songs “Eat Your Young” and “All Things End” released on his  Eat Your Young  EP earlier this spring. A third track, “Francesca,” drops Friday, May 19. Along with his limited run of pop-up shows, Hozier’s full North American tour comes back to  Chicago in September.

On a picture-perfect Tuesday evening, he commenced his 90-minute set with the rousingly satirical “Eat Your Young”— the title track from the new EP— accompanied by his eight-piece band. Striking for the audience and band alike was how Hozier’s music dramatically translates to an intimate setting like Metro. As celebratory as his set was at Lollapalooza (2019), these pop-up shows let the crowd connect on another level. His set combined his well-known material (“Jackie and Wilson,” the vocal-heavy “Movement”) and a few surprising deep cuts (“Dinner & Diatribes” and “Nobody” from  Wasteland, Baby! ). Midway through the set, the band left the stage while he performed a striking rendition of “Cherry Wine” from his self-titled debut album, leaving the audience in quiet awe. He closed his set with his 2013 breakthrough hit “Take Me To Church” and encouraged the crowd to sing along, making it a therapeutic and joyful closer.

Chicago-based opener Elizabeth Moen showcased her powerful and bluesy set to a captive audience of Hozier fans who seemed genuinely intrigued by her music. As reviewed in IE in February, Moen’s set yolked her alt-country/soulful singing, meshing an edgy punk Patsy Cline with Jessi Colter and Madison Cunningham.

Hozier at Huntington Bank Pavilion in Chicago, IL

hozier tour chicago

A slightly chilly Chicago welcomed Hozier for the second time this year, marking the last show of the season at Northerly Island.

Back in May, Hozier performed a very limited run of intimate shows ahead of his latest release, Unreal Unearth . Chicago was lucky enough to be one of the stops on this mini-tour. Since the new album was still yet to be released at this point, only a few songs were performed from it as a teaser for what was to come. While they were warmly received by the audience, the fans weren’t quite able to sing along to all of them. Fast forward to a cool September evening by the lakefront, just a month since the long-awaited album was finally released and it was a stark contrast to the show at the Metro. This time the crowd were singing along in fine voice to every song, having absorbed every inch of the new material.

The intimate shows were stripped back while still including his ample eight-piece accompanying bandmates. This current tour is the biggest stage production we have seen for Hozier. The huge screen at the back of the stage brought a whole new element to the show. Dangling from the top of the stage were plant roots and earth in keeping with the new album’s artwork.

When the tickets went on sale for this show, it impressively sold out in minutes. It therefore wasn’t surprising to see Northerly Island packed in anticipation of the show the fans have waited months to see. It was a nice chilled-out, relaxed feeling with the audience members dancing and swaying back and forth with loved ones and friends. It was a beautiful atmosphere to take in and be a part of. It was everything a late summer show on the lake’s edge should be.

The majority of the upcoming tour dates are also sold out, and it’s not surprising to see why. It was so refreshing to see so many people fully engaged in the show. Every time Hozier stopped to chat with the audience to tell the backstory to the new material and then announce the song, he was greeted with the loudest roars imaginable from the fans. Every time he tours, the venues get bigger and bigger, clearly showing his career growth.

Typically when someone tours in support of a new album, they still only perform a handful of songs from it. This was not the case here with the majority of the setlist, an impressive ten songs to be precise, being from Unreal Unearth . The whole night kicked off exactly how it meant to go on with the first two opening tracks from the album, De Selby (Part 1) and De Selby (Part 2)  before launching into “Eat Your Young” to ear-splitting screams from the audience. The set included the popular “Jackie and Wilson,” “From Eden,” “Dinner & Diatribes,” and “Almost (Sweet Music).” Just before the encore came the mega-hit “Take Me To Church” before the encore ended the show with “Cherry Wine,” “Nina Cried Power,” and the show finale “Work Song.”

Bear in mind, anytime you see a show announcement for Hozier, be sure to set yourself a reminder for when the tickets go on sale because you have to be fast. They will sell out. This is a career that sky-rocketed from his very first single and is only gaining momentum.

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 17: Singer Hozier performs at The Kia Forum on September 17, 2024 in Inglewood, California. allison russell live concert review tour

Hozier didn’t talk at great length more than a couple of times during the opening of his three-night stand at L.A.’s Kia Forum this week, but when he did, he picked some winning subjects. Introducing “Wildflower and Barley,” he spoke about beekeeping, a hobby he took up while living alone in the Irish countryside, and the effects he observed of the tiniest changes on homing instincts at a difficult climate and elevation.

Popular on variety.

A lot of music fans probably don’t even think of Hozier as a “rock star” per se, maybe because they think he’s too good for the part. The Irish singer-songwriter has a perceived virtuousness and an actual virtuosity, either one of which could be disqualifying by some aggro standards. After he’d built up this reputation for being a brilliant, polite and generally admirable character, there was something funny about the fact that it took recording as uncharacteristic a single as “Too Sweet” for him to finally get his first No. 1 hit in the U.S. … probably the first song he’s ever written specifically from the point of view of a cad. It turns out he’s not so earnest that he can’t have some fun role-playing being an unserious person.

After touring globally behind his third album, last year’s “Unreal Unearth,” for a year and a half now, his show is terrifically well-honed. It started off with “De Selby (Part 1),” a pretty ethereal song rooted in an obscure bit of fantastical European literature, with English eventually giving way to Irish-language lyrics, subtitled on the big screens on either side of the stage, before things became completely churchy and choral. Maybe nothing in that list sounds like your idea of a fun Saturday night, but the kicker to that intro was (you guessed it) “De Selby (Part 2),” which delivered on the heavier rock front. Before long Hozier was deep into his freshly released EP of outtakes with “Nobody’s Soldier,” a deeply fuzzy rocker that sounds like something out of a rock-and-soul revue that has been overlaid with the tones of a decelerating jet engine.

“Still feeling good? I will do my best to change that, swear to God,” he promised, somewhere around the time that “Eat Your Young” gave way to “Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene.” (How neither of those titles provided Hozier with his first U.S. No. 1 is anyone’s guess.) Hozier’s themes can be as feel-bad as promised, in bits and pieces; this is a fellow who themed his latest album around Dante’s circles of hell, and who reserves a stripped-down domestic abuse song (“Cherry Wine”) for the first encore slot on the B-stage. But getting truly depressive is an empty threat, when more celebrative numbers like the hand-clappy, soul-music-celebrating “Almost (Sweet Music)” are there to pick up the mood slack.

Although he’s only released three full albums in his 10-year recording career, Hozier already has an embarrassment of possible concert riches, to the point that he’s already jettisoned some pretty fantastic songs from “Unreal Unearth” that were included in last year’s shows (like “Damage Gets Done” and “Astract (Psychopomp)”) to make room for three newer songs from the pair of EPs he’s put out in 2024. “Too Sweet,” obviously, is the star of these — one of many songs in the set that show just how much he loves a good bottom end, with bass and guitar blending as one faintly nasty instrument, underneath that undeniable pop hook. But watching him bring out opening act Allison Russell to coo with him on the same EP’s pop-folk “Wildflower and Barley,” you’d never guess he’d get anywhere above a Cat Stevens level of gnarliness.

Whether he’s playing acoustic or electric, fans can always be grateful for the big screens alongside the stage (vertical ones, perhaps in deflection to the TikTok generation) for providing handy glimpses of his phenomenally precise finger work. This offers a chance for a deeper appreciation of the odd, signature picking style style has him keeping the index finger on his right hand perpetually afloat and above the fray, as useless to him as a vestigial tail.

The singer Bedouine was his guest for all three nights at the Forum, coming out to recreate their duet on the new EP’s “That You Are.” But almost the entire 2024 has provided a chance for Hozier to celebrate his opening act, Allison Russell, who with him has been responsible for the year’s most potent ongoing double bill. Besides “Wildflower and Barley,” he brings Russell back out for the closing encore number, “Work Song,” describing her to the audience as “one of the greatnfreedom singers of our time…. and a very bright light in this world and a very bright light in my life.” He is known for elevating Mavis Staples by name and vocal inclusion in the recorded version of “Nina Cried Power,” of course (a song that provides a showcase for backing singer Melissa McMillan in concert now)… and, in his ongoing championing of Russell, Hozier clearly knows a Mavis successor when he hears one.

In Tuesday’s Forum show, Hozier noted that Russell’s casting in “Hadestown” on Broadway, starting next month, had just been announced that day. Russell used the occasion to bring a song called “Persephone” back into her set — a song coincidentally named after her first girlfriend, even though the “Hadestown” character of that name that she’ll be portraying in New York may share few characteristics with the young love she credits with helping save her life.

Russell’s 40-minute set was hugely well-received by the Forum crowd, and her music has plenty of parallels to Hozier’s own that helped make it a natural fit, even before their shared philanthropic preoccupations. The Grammy-winning “Eve Was Black” was even more rock ‘n’ roll than Americana in this concert setting, and “Demons,” another cut from her “The Returner” album, got funkier and throatier. “Superlover,” a song resurrected from her previous, pre-solo act, Birds of Chicago, had new lyrics, invoking Israel, Palestine and her current adopted home in Tennessee.

Another thing Hozier and Russell share: a nearly pathological (in a good way) commitment to naming seemingly every crew member as well as each band member by the end of a set. In Hozier’s case, that extends all the way to the production assistant, house engineer, guitar technician and carpenters. Whatever your mama might have told you about holding out for someone who treats “the help” well… maybe that should apply to our rock stars, too.
