Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari

Home to over 1,400 animals representing approximately 70 species, everyone will have a chance to spot some of their favorite animals.

Located in Oita Prefecture , Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari gives visitors a chance to return to nature and immerse themselves in the wildlife of the African continent. Children and adults alike will enjoy the unique experiences of seeing, touching and feeding animals not typically found in your favorite zoos.

While Japan is home to several safari parks, Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari ranks among the largest ones. Home to over 1,400 animals representing approximately 70 species, everyone will have a chance to spot some of their favorite animals. At the core of the safari’s philosophy is the recreation of natural habitats for the animals to live in. As a result, the park contains six types of terrain including mountains, grassland, rocky areas, woodlands, waterfronts and sandy areas. Here, each species can live and socialize in ways similar to their natural environments. The park is divided into three types of experiences, depending on what you’re looking for: the Safari Zone, the Fureai Zone and the Jungle Bus.

People bringing their own cars will be able to explore over 115 hectares of the Ajimu Kogen Highlands which is populated with lions, giraffes, rhinos, elephants and more. From the safety of your car, you’ll be able to observe the animals as they graze, sleep and eat in their habitats. Be aware that you are not permitted to open your windows during this portion of the park.

Although you can get fairly up close and personal with many of the animals in the Safari Zone, nothing beats being able to touch and interact with the animals. In the Fureai Zone, visitors will be able to get their hands on a variety of animals, including kangaroos, squirrel monkeys, hedgehogs and more.

If you happen to come by bus and have no access to a car or are looking for a different kind of experience at the park, buy a ticket for the Jungle Bus. Riders will sit in a customized bus shaped and painted like wild animals and explore the Safari Zone. Open windows with metal bars installed will let you get very close to the animals while keeping you safe from unwanted encounters. From the safety of the bus, visitors can feed the animals, and even the carnivores, like lions, using a set of long tongs! Be aware that this popular attraction has a limited number of tickets available each day and is first come, first serve.

Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari

Recreation of an ecological environment for wild animals in Kyushu!

The African Safari is the largest safari park in Japan where around 1400 animals of 70 species roam freely in its enormous area. The park is divided into two zones; the “Animal Zone” with its 6km safari road where visitors can get close to the animals from the “jungle bus” and the “Interacting Zone” where visitors can actually touch the animals.

The Animal Zone is divided into 7 sections (e.g., lions, tigers, herbivores). These zones make use of the varied topography of mountains, grasslands, and bodies of water to recreate environments close to the animals' natural habitat.

If you use your own car, you can take as many laps around the safari road as you like at your own pace, while the "jungle bus" provides fun guides and an opportunity to be at close range when animals approach for feeding. Each can offer an interesting experience in a different way. Of course, you must not get out of the vehicle or open the windows in both cases.

In the Interacting Zone, you can touch small animals like bunny rabbits, as well as kangaroos, guinea pigs, and squirrel monkeys.

  • Animal Zone where visitors can see the animals roaming freely from the car.
  • You can see at close the animals while feeding from the jungle bus.
  • You must not get out the car nor open the door due for safety reasons.
  • Wear warm clothes for the jungle bus ride in winter.
  • Visitors can touch animals in the interacting zone.

Observe wild animals at Japan's largest safari park

One of Japan’s largest safari parks spread across vast grasslands. There is an animal zone where you can observe animals from inside the car and a petting zone where you can touch small animals (Deai no Mura). In the animal zone, lions, herbivores, bears, mountain animals and other animals are arranged in each section so that you can enjoy seeing them as they are. In the petting zone, you can directly touch animals such as kangaroos, squirrel monkeys, hedgehogs and guinea pigs, so it is very popular among small children. Various events are held in the park, but the popular one is the jungle bus (Charge). You can feed wild animals directly on a jungle bus shaped like a lion or an elephant. This is a great opportunity to observe lions, elephants and other animals that are not normally accessible. Feel the impact of the big animals that appear in front of you through the bus cage. Also, depending on the season, you can hold a baby tiger or lion and take a commemorative photo at the (Limited duration and age) event, or you can experience making bread in the shape of an animal by making a reservation on the Internet at the (There is a charge for both.) event, etc., it will surely become a memory of your trip. Go to the vast safari park where you can see animals in nature to your heart’s content.

Yufuin: Driving across Kyushu

You can drive from one end of Ikijima to the other in about twenty minutes. The narrow roads twist either along the coastline, between fishing villages, or bend back upon themselves into the hills, connecting farms in the interior. I don’t think there is a road on this island that is more than two lanes. Many are single, meaning you need to keep your eyes on the roadside mirrors to watch for oncoming traffic around the corner. I estimate about 90 percent of the vehicles on the island are kei cars .

So, after four months of not going anywhere I was a little freaked at the thought of driving a few hours across Kyushu in a seven seater van!

map of northern Kyushu

After a surprisingly snowy winter, northern Kyushu warmed to above twenty degrees this past weekend. We worked our way through the streets of the small city of Karatsu and into the Sefuri mountain range. This relatively low range is full of hot springs and cups the western edge of the Tsukushi Plain, the largest on Kyushu and historical source of wealth for daimyo that controlled what is currently known as Saga prefecture. Once we made it to the plain we got onto the expressway and zoomed through the semi-urban sprawl of Saga and Fukuoka prefectures before climbing up into the high mountains of Oita prefecture, just north of Mt Kuju, the tallest peak on Kyushu at 1788 meters.

The foliage was a dried out yellow and brown, except where the cedars turned red, pregnant with pollen. My wife sat in the passenger seat, teared up and sniffling from allergies while the kids were in the back staring at iPads in their laps, missing the mountainous scenery zooming by. I had to slow down since the curves of the highway became sharper and there were still patches of snow here and there.

Finally exiting the highway we wended our way down into the mountain town of Yufuin. This resort town is a popular destination for its hot springs and views of the imposing Yufu Mountain (由布岳), a two-peaked volcano that at sometime in the past erupted, changing the surrounding landscape into rugged hills covered in low grasses. The terrain around here is so treacherous that the Japan Ground Self Defense Forces have a massive training ground here for field maneuvers and tank driving.

We would stay here in the evening, but in the meantime would forge on… to AFRICA! A few minutes drive past Yufuin takes you to a safari park where you can feed lions and tigers and bears through the caged windows of a safari bus, or sit inside a nice cozy mansion and pet lap dogs and cats. Whichever you prefer! My kids did both. I took pictures. See the African Safari gallery on Flickr →

Since we had about as much animal fur as my allergies could handle, we escaped the safari park and continued eastward to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, which sits high above Beppu Bay. We made it to the other side of Kyushu!

Before it got dark we turned around and headed back to Yufuin. Thirty minutes of driving through narrow twisty roads had me thinking of Iki once again. However, here the drop-offs were much steeper, and the forest was imposing. The trees had shed all their leaves and it felt like we were driving through Halloween.

Back on the valley floor in Yufuin we were safe, with a beautiful view of Yufu Mountain during the Golden Hour. Before dinner I slipped into the outdoor hot spring. All alone I could look up and admire the double-peak. As the sun went down, a shadow moved up the mountainside. The pool was surrounded by large stones, artfully placed. Directly in the line of sight of Yufu mountain was a tall rock with two points. I smiled at this, and then went inside for dinner and relaxation after a long day of driving.

The next morning, after having not slept well , I rose early to watch the sun come up over the mountain. The shades of blue the mountain cycles through during the winter sunrise are myriad. After a hearty breakfast, we walked around downtown. There were not very many people at all, but we did see a draft horse gallop down the street . After eating some fancy donuts, we loaded up the van to drive back across Kyushu. It was 23 degrees, an unusually warm February day. We took our time, stopping at parks along the way, before dropping off the vehicle in Karatsu and catching the late boat back to Iki. It felt good to be on the road again, to stretch our legs more than the 20 mins we have been limited to on the island.
