SEE IT: Video Shows Louisiana Teen Moments After Jumping from Cruise Ship, Search Called Off

louisiana cruise ship death

A video has surfaced showing boat passengers in the Bahamas moments after an 18-year-old Louisiana star baseball player jumped off the ship in response to a dare, resulting in a fatal outcome.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cameron Robbins, who had just graduated from University Laboratory School (U-High), jumped off the boat as a dare on May 24. A video obtained by DailyMail showed Robbins splashing in the water near the boat before he vanished.

At the time, Robbins and students from other schools were on a graduation trip at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau.

At 11:30 p.m. on May 24, Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel contacted watchstanders from Coast Guard District Seven, informing them that someone had fallen off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise ship.

According to a witness, crews made multiple unsuccessful attempts to locate Robbins as the boat, resembling a pirate ship, stayed in the area for several hours. On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard called the search off , according to CBS 9.

#FinalUpdate press release: https://t.co/WyAamjsWl6 — USCGSoutheast (@USCGSoutheast) May 27, 2023

U-High baseball coach Justin Morgan issued a statement following the tragedy.

“Cameron is a kid who is truly loved by his teammates, teachers, and fellow classmates. He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off of the playing field. Our school community is struggling right now but hoping for the very best. Our thoughts and prayers have been and will remain with the Robbins family during this difficult time.”

US teen missing after going overboard on sunset cruise in the Bahamas

Cameron Robbins, 18, went overboard while on a sunset cruise Wednesday night.

A recent high school graduate from Louisiana is missing after going overboard while on a trip to the Bahamas, school officials and the United States Coast Guard said.

Cameron Robbins, who attended University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, was on a trip with a group of students when he went overboard on Wednesday night, according to school officials.

The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. local time near the area of Athol Island, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The 18-year-old "reportedly jumped from a pleasure vessel," the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday that it was assisting with search efforts for a missing U.S. citizen "believed to have fallen overboard from a sunset cruise near Nassau" on Wednesday. A Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that the search was for Robbins.

The teen fell off the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise ship, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard provided air assistance in the search and rescue mission, which was being led by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, according to Petty Officer 3rd Class Ryan Estrada. But on Friday evening, the Coast Guard was informed by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force that they were suspending the "active search efforts" for Robbins "pending further developments" and were no longer requesting assistance from the Coast Guard after notifying Robbins family, according to Lt. Cmdr. John W. Beal.

"We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends," Beal said in a statement.

The Coast Guard said Saturday its crews searched more than 325 square miles before concluding its search efforts.

The Bahamas vacation was not a school-sanctioned trip but included students from several high schools in the area, including between 10 and 15 students from the Laboratory School, the school's director, Kevin George, told ABC Baton Rouge affiliate WBRZ in an interview on Thursday.

The school just held its graduation on Sunday.

George described Robbins as a "great kid" and athlete who had been with the school for 13 years, since the start of his education.

"Just one of those kids that you're so proud of once they cross the stage," George told WBRZ.

Students held a prayer circle for Robbins on Thursday morning following news that he was reported missing, holding hands outside the Laboratory School, located on the main campus of Louisiana State University.

"It's a tight-knit family," George said. "The kids reached out to us wanting to know, could they do a prayer circle. Obviously we agreed. We really appreciated their leadership in this trying time."

Robbins has a sister who is a junior at the school, according to George, who said he spoke to their father on Thursday morning.

"It's just a really emotional time for us right now," George said. "Just trying to send up our prayers and give our support."

"Let's continue to pray and pray that we find Cameron safe and sound," he added.

Baton Rouge woman speaks about moment woman jumps from cruise ship off Louisiana coast

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The Coast Guard is searching for a missing cruise ship passenger approximately 150 miles offshore SouthWest Pass, Louisiana. Rescue crews are searching for a 32-year-old African American female. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans then directed the launch of rescue crews to begin searching.

A Baton Rouge woman who was onboard the Carnival Valor cruise ship talked with WAFB about what she saw and heard. She and other passengers our team spoke with claim something happened in the hot tub area on the 10th deck of the ship around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 between the now missing woman and a man. That’s when security was called.

RELATED : Cell phone video shows moments before and after woman jumped from cruise ship

“Security got her out of the hot tub. Whenever they got to take her into custody, apparently she was upset and went over the rail. And, that was at about 2:30,” said Kim Barnette, one of the ship’s passengers and a resident of Baton Rouge.

“And when she jumped off, she apparently hit her head on the side of the boat. And, then she hit the water face first,” said Randy, a passenger.

Cell phone video (see below) of the incident obtained by WAFB’s sister station WVUE FOX 8 shows three security guards holding a woman’s arms behind her back not cuffed. She gets up and screams the name “Alicia” before being helped up a flight of stairs and off of the pool deck. The video then cuts to moments after the woman jumped, and crews can be seen rushing to the edge of the ship to throw in a life preserver.

“There are some lifeboats there that apparently she hit on the way down. Which when it hit, it was pretty loud, and of course, there was a disturbance here on the ship, which made me go on my balcony on deck 7,” said Barnette.

People aboard the boat told WAFB, the mood drastically changed before it docked in New Orleans on Thursday, Feb. 17.

“The feeling onboard the ship right now is a little subdued. Of course, most people are at dinner or in their cabins. There’s not a lot of activity that you see going on board, that you see with people. Because everybody is praying for the family because it’s a pretty bad situation,” said Barnette.

And, passengers are praying for a miracle as the Coast Guard continues to search.

“We continue to pray for the family, and let everybody know that the rest of us are okay on board the Valor. We’re just eating dinner and making the best of a bad situation and praying for the family,” said Barnette.

One woman our team spoke with claims crew members threw a flare in, to mark the woman’s location. But, no one has seen her come up from the water yet.

We do not know the woman’s name yet or where she is from.

The ship left from Cozumel, Mexico around 3:27 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 15. It returned to dock in New Orleans around 10:30 a.m. on Thurs., Feb. 17.

An earlier version of this story included a quote from a passenger saying the woman was in handcuffs. A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line denies that.

You can read a full statement from Carnival below:

Carnival Valor supported the search for a guest who jumped overboard from her balcony on Wednesday evening while the ship was at sea. The ship’s command immediately began search and rescue procedures, returned to the area near where the incident occurred and notified the U.S. Coast Guard. Carnival’s CARE team is providing support to the guest’s husband who was traveling with her, as well as her family.

Coast Guard officials took over the search effort and released Carnival Valor on Wednesday evening. Our thoughts are with our guest’s family.

The ship arrived to its homeport of New Orleans on Thursday morning from a five-day cruise to Mexico that departed Saturday, Feb 12 and departed on its next cruise Thursday evening.

Coast Guard searches for man missing from Louisiana cruise ship

The Carnival Glory cruise ship.

Surveillance video on a Carnival cruise ship from which a 28-year-old man went missing shows him jumping from a deck early Monday, a spokesman for the cruise line said Tuesday.

The Coast Guard is searching for Tyler Barnett, who went missing Monday morning from the Carnival Glory, which is bound for Montego Bay, Jamaica. Barnett, of Houma, Louisiana, the father of twin girls, was reported missing that afternoon, and the Coast Guard sent two aircraft to search, following the ship’s track toward Jamaica, it said.

Matt Lupoli, Carnival’s senior manager of public relations, said video appears to show the missing passenger jumping overboard.

“After multiple reviews of the shipboard surveillance video, it appears that the guest reported missing on Monday jumped from the ship’s Deck 4 at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Monday,” he said.

“He can be seen climbing on a lifeboat and jumping from there,” Lupoli said.

The Coast Guard has been informed of the video and has been able to narrow its search effort, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jose Hernandez said. The search had been over a 200-mile area.

The more specific location also means the Coast Guard has been able to launch an HC-130 plane and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, he said. The search is 30 miles southwest of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, the Coast Guard said.

The Carnival Glory left Louisiana for Montego Bay and is due to arrive Wednesday, the cruise line said.

Tyler Barnett's sister, Destiny Barnett, and 13 other relatives were also on the cruise.

"It makes you feel crazy to be stuck on a ship where everyone else is having a good time," Destiny Barnett said. "It was supposed to be a vacation, but for us, it's hell."

The cruise is also scheduled to stop at Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel, Mexico, before it returns to New Orleans on Sunday, according to its itinerary .

Destiny Barnett said her brother's card was last used at his cabin door. His cellphone was in his room, and his bed had not been slept in.

Barnett's grandmother Dirlean Tate Mason, who is not on the cruise, is anxiously waiting for news. She said that Tyler Barnett works on the river barges in Louisiana and that she does not think he would try to take his own life. “He loves his girls,” she said.

"I just want answers, and I'm holding out for hope," she said.

The Coast Guard issued broadcasts notifying mariners in the Gulf of Mexico that a person may have fallen overboard, a spokesman said.

In a post on X, the Coast Guard said search efforts were paused Monday night because of dangerous weather conditions, including rough seas and strong winds. It said it would launch more search assets as soon as conditions allowed.

According to d ata from the cruise industry consultancy firm GP Wild, there were 212 man overboard incidents on cruise ships from 2009 to 2019. Forty-eight of those passengers were rescued.

In April, Coast Guard crews suspended a search for an Australian passenger who fell off a cruise off Hawaii after a three-day search yielded no results.

Authorities say the man who recently disappeared from a Carnival cruise ship appeared to have jumped overboard.

Security footage from the Carnival Glory “shows the man jumping off the cruise ship ,” according to a Tuesday night update from the Coast Guard.

The agency has officially identified the missing man as Tyler Barnett of Houma, Louisiana.

A Carnival spokesperson tells PEOPLE that footage appeared to show Barnett jumping from the ship’s Deck 4 around 1:40 a.m. local time on Monday.

“He can be seen climbing on a lifeboat and jumping from there,” the spokesperson said.

Barnett’s mother Elisha Reid told Business Insider that her daughter was previously informed that there was no footage of what happened.

In Carnival's statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson said that on Tuesday, they were "advised of the possibility of him wearing a different shirt, which allowed our security team to change the profile of the guest as we searched onboard video."

"We have informed the U.S. Coast Guard and are providing assistance to the guest’s family that was traveling with him," they added.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Family members previously said Barnett’s passenger card was swiped at the ship’s casino at 12:15 a.m., and his room just before 12:30 a.m., according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV . Carnival crew members began searching for Barnett around 7:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard said watchstanders with its New Orleans sector were alerted to the incident just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

So far, crews have searched more than 200 miles of water for the missing passenger, according to the agency. But adverse weather conditions have hampered the search.

"I just want answers, and I'm holding out for hope," Barnett's grandmother Dirlean Tate Mason told NBC News in a story published on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard has since narrowed its search area roughly 30 miles southwest of the Southwest Pass.

Meanwhile, Carnival Cruise Line said its Care Team “is supporting the missing guest's family on board” the ship, which "arrived today to Montego Bay, Jamaica as planned."

On Facebook, Mason said she and her family are in need of prayers as they await answers. “We are holding on to hope and prayer that he will be found safe,” she wrote. "Our hearts are breaking."

The parents of an 18-year-old high school graduate who fell overboard on a sunset cruise in the Bahamas have broken their silence.

Cameron Robbins went on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation from the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He and several friends were aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on 24 May when Cameron allegedly jumped off the boat on a dare.

The US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force spent several days searching for Cameron before suspending their efforts on 27 May. Following his presumed death, a memorial was planned for the teenager on Sunday (4 June).

Speaking from their home ahead of the service, Cameron’s parents William and Shari Robbins, both 54, told The New York Post they were aware of the impact their “funny and kind-hearted” son had made on people following updates of the tragic incident believed to have cut his life short.

“We are just mourning our son right now,” Ms Robbins told the Post . “We appreciate you calling. Maybe we will be able to talk more later.”

A doomed dare and a haunting video: What we know about Cameron Robbins’ cruise ship disappearance

“We appreciate everyone’s support,” Mr Robbins also said.

The University Lab School Director Kevin George told WAFB that Cameron had attended the school for 13 years. The teen also played baseball for the school, which operates as part of Louisiana State University.

“Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news. Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well,” Mr George wrote.

The graduation trip was not organised by the school.

Baton Rouge high school senior Cameron Robbins, 18, is missing after falling off a boat in the Bahamas

According to his obituary, Cameron was not only an accomplished athlete but also loved country music and was a “big star” in karaoke.

“He was a tough player, battling back from multiple injuries, known to pitch through separated shoulders and broken hands. He hoped to continue his baseball career at the college level,” the tribute read. “...Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family.”

In a statement provided to The Independent, Jonathan Chia, a representative for Pirates’ Revenge Ltd, the parent company of Blackbeard’s Revenge, said Cameron went overboard at approximately 9.40pm local time in Montagu Bay off Athol Island in the Bahamas.

Video captured in the moments after Cameron jumped into the water showed the 18-year-old swimming around the vessel as passengers on the sunset cruise yelled at him. In the footage, individuals can be heard urging Cameron to grab onto the buoy that they threw into the water for him.

“The crew executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard,” Mr Chia said.

After Coast Guard crews searched more than 325 square miles, they concluded their efforts with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on 27 May. Although searches have ended, the US Coast Guard is asking anyone with new information to contact the District Seven watchstanders at 305-415-6800.

A GoFundMe has been started to benefit Cameron’s family as they deal with the aftermath of the difficult situation.

Meanwhile, online speculation has swirled over whether Cameron was attacked by a shark in the water.

18-Year-Old Teen Presumed Dead After Jumping From Bahamas Cruise Ship

Cruise Vacation

Photo : Getty Images

According to WJCL 22 , the tragic conclusion of a multi-day search for a Louisiana student who jumped from a sunset cruise in the Bahamas was captured on heartbreaking video, which also shows his last known sighting. It has come to light that footage from last week shows 18-year-old Cameron Robbins, who had just graduated from high school in Baton Rouge, swimming in the open seas at night near Athol Island. Robbins was on a sunset cruise with a number of his friends to celebrate their accomplishment. According to reports, Cameron went over the edge on his own free will and not only that, but also on a dare. You can kind of tell from the video that his friends found it amusing. That is, until he disappeared behind the boat and was no longer visible to everyone, at which point they started yelling at him to take a life preserver that had been tossed to him, even though it was quite a distance away and he ultimately failed to do so. Everyone started to freak out when he vanished. Since he vanished, Bahamian police and the U.S. Coast Guard have conducted a multi-day search. However, Robbins was never located, and the search has now been suspended following several fruitless days of looking for him. The Coast Guard said,

"We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends." Robbins' family said, "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss."

Teens tried to stop Cameron Robbins before he jumped off Bahamas cruise, passenger's parent says

The recent high school graduate from baton rouge, louisiana, disappeared in 'shark-infested waters'.

Cameron Robbins, a Louisiana resident, was celebrating his high school graduation when he was reportedly dared to jump overboard on a cruise.

EXCLUSIVE: A group of students tried to physically stop Cameron Robbins from jumping off a Bahamas cruise ship last week after he was reportedly dared to take the leap, Fox News Digital has learned.

Robbins, 18, was on Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise with several hundred high school graduates from Baton Rouge, Louisiana , and jumped overboard into what authorities called "shark-infested" waters near the uninhabited Athol Island, northeast of Nassau, around 9:30 p.m. on May 24.

A woman whose son was friends with Robbins and on the boat at the time told Fox News Digital that several students tried to grab Robbins before he took the plunge, but he broke free.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said many of the students were part of a close-knit community that was in shock, disbelief, exhausted and cold as the U.S. Coast Guard , Royal Bahamas Defence Force and United Cajun Navy searched the waters until about 3 a.m.

The small, pirate-lookalike cruise ship was anchored throughout the night, and the students were stuck at sea near the uninhabited island in what Royal Bahamas Defense Force Commodore Raymond King called "shark-infested waters."

Experts have told Fox News Digital there is a vast array of marine life, including dolphins, tiger sharks and bull sharks in those waters that feed off the scraps from the boats.

"This was a booze cruise, and they were on their way back when this happened," the one student's mother said. "My son texted me when it happened, saying, ‘Cameron jumped off. They can’t find him.' They were out there until 2, 3 in the morning.

"It was terrible weather that night. The kids were cold, wet and traumatized. The girls were in bikinis and bathing suits. The guys were giving them their shirts. It was a bad time to bring drunk 18-year-olds out into waters near this island where there's nothing."

The two-day, 325-mile search for Robbins was called off Friday night. "We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

The viral cellphone video of Robbins in the water, which was seen over 10 million times, went through virtually every type of edit on social media after a speculation-fueled narrative that Robbins encountered a shark gripped people's curiosities.

The video appears to show a shadowy object in the water move toward the recent high school grad, who was swimming toward a life preserver before changing direction.

However, the cellphone footage is too dark and chaotic to definitively show what happened, and the theory is no longer officially being investigated at the request of Robbins' family, Brian Trascher, spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy, told Fox News Digital on Friday.

"None of the experts consulted can definitely say what's in the video due to the quality and length of the video," Trascher said. "The Robbins family has requested that we not entertain that theory any longer, so our official position is that we don't know what happened while Cam was in the water."

Authorities officially designated Robbins as "lost at sea," which is the same as a death certificate, and a memorial service for Robbins will be held Sunday at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.

The cruise was not sanctioned by University Laboratory School, where Robbins had just graduated. It was planned by an independent company called GradWeek , which released the following statement to the media last week:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Robbins Family during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the Robbins family’s privacy, we feel it’s inappropriate to comment on the details surrounding the night of the incident.

"Bahamian Authorities have been conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and can provide the most accurate information once they have completed their investigation."

Kevin George, the director of the school, told local news outlet WBRZ that Robbins was a "special kid."

He has "been here throughout his entire educational career. He's an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you're so proud of when they cross the stage," George said.

A multi-day search for a Louisiana teen who jumped from a sunset cruise in the Bahamas has come to its tragic end -- and the last known sighting of him was caught on harrowing video.

Footage has surfaced showing 18-year-old Cameron Robbins -- who'd just graduated high school in Baton Rouge -- swimming in the open seas at night near Athol Island last week ... where he was on a sunset cruise with a bunch of his peers celebrating their achievement.

The Life Preserver

Word is Cameron went overboard on his own accord, and not just that -- but, apparently, it was on a dare. In the clip, you can kinda tell his buddies were getting a kick out of it.

That is until he vanished behind the boat and out of view of everyone, who began screaming at him to grab a life preserver that'd been thrown to him -- which was pretty far away, and he didn't end up reaching it. Once he disappeared, everyone began to panic.

Cameron Robbins

Since he went missing, a multi-day search was undertaken by both Bahamian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard -- but Robbins was never found, and the search has now been called off after several unsuccessful days of scouring the area for any sign of him.

It sounds like Cameron is presumed dead, as the Coast Guard issued a statement saying ... "We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends." His family flew into the Bahamas last week, and prayer vigils have been held for him for a few days now.

Cameron Robbins

His family has also spoken out ... "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge.

A SHARK expert has revealed what likely occurred during the final moments of a Louisiana teen's life after jumping off the deck of a cruise ship into dark waters.

On May 24, Cameron Robbins , 18, was with friends on the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise in the Bahamas , celebrating their graduation from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge .

Louisiana teen Cameron Robbins, 18, was presumed dead after leaping from a Bahamas cruise ship into the ocean

At around 11.30pm witnesses claimed that some in the group dared Robbins to jump off the ship to the water below, which he did.

Robbins went missing immediately after, and a harrowing clip was then shared of the situation from bystanders, where many believe they saw the shadow of a shark come toward the teen before he vanished in the waves.

It's been over a month since Robbins went missing, and an extensive search was called off days after the ordeal.

Now, shark expert Kevin McMurray, who runs a website called trackingsharks.com , has come forward to detail what likely happened to Robbins if it truly was a shark that caused his death.

"At the beginning of it, it looks like there is a shark or something," McMurray told Mirror after analyzing the blurry footage of Robbins in the water.

"He's in the water, and over to the left, you can see it."

McMurray continued to coincide with opinions several online users had about the video after confusion as to why Robbins didn't swim toward a life ring that was thrown for him.

"Haunting, but you can see the exact moment the shark gets him,” one Twitter user  said  and attached a screenshot of a terrifying shadow only inches away from the 18-year-old.

Another explained that Robbins could have seen the shark and decided to bolt, which is why he appeared to abandon a life ring.

“He initially goes for the buoy but then turns around when he sees the shark, ultimately disappearing into the water, likely dragged down. Very sad,” they  noted .

The shark expert said: "So my analysis, what I think happened is, he got in the water and he was swimming around, the shark, for some reason, or whatever it is - I'm not for sure saying it is a shark, but it looks a lot like a shark - essentially it comes and surfaces and there's a life ring out to his right."

"So he's looking at whatever popped up out of the water, and instead of swimming toward the life ring he turns around at that point. I think all that splashing we see is just him trying to get away from whatever it is."

McMurray added that "it's always possible" for sharks to attack in the ocean, especially tiger sharks .

Local officials also noted that the waters near Athol Island were home to several breeds of sharks.

Commodore Raymond King of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) said the area was "really shark-infested," per  Daily Mail .

The shark expert told Mirror that even a single bite could risk exposure for Robbins, although he could have been later consumed by the beast , which would lead to incredible difficulty in finding any remains.

"My guess is that if something like that did occur, maybe a single bite or something like that, more than likely, again you can't say because anything's possible, but exposure would probably be what I think would have occurred and he may have died of that," McMurray explained to the publication.

"Either he sank or a shark ate his body, that's possible. There are a lot of tiger sharks there, and they'll scavenge."

McMurray added that "recovering [Robbins' body] would be nearly impossible. Something like that, you're talking about a massive search area with currents and all that."

Crews from the boat and several agencies, including the United States Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, spanned over 325 miles searching for Robbins.

His family released a statement after the announcement of the search's end on May 26.

"The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron, and we are returning to Baton Rouge," they said, per Daily Mail.

"We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us."

"In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss," the family continued.

Robbins was a star  baseball  player at University Laboratory School.

A spokesperson for the Royal Bahamas Defence Force says that the Louisiana teen who disappeared in the waters off Athol Island "fell" from the ship despite reports that the recent high school graduate jumped overboard.

Officials were unable to locate Cameron Robbins or his remains despite an intense 48-hour search led by the Defence Force, with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard.

The star athlete had vanished into the waters of the Bermuda Triangle.

The end of that search marked the start of an investigation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force into how the teenager ended up in the water that night. That investigation is still ongoing at this time, Inside Edition Digital has learned.

Cameron went into the water at approximately 9:30 p.m. on May 25, and two hours later the  Defence Force contacted the U.S. Coast Guard to assist in the search operation, "reporting that a man fell off the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise ship," according to a news release.

The Coast Guard provided updates on social media over the next 48 hours, and when the search was called off two days later, the agency included a map showing the 350-square-mile search area.

Robbins' family released a statement as well a short time later, saying: "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief we thank our family, friends and well wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss."

How Cameron disappeared remains unknown .

There are a number of factors that could have played a role in his disappearance.

Weather reports show that it was warm but cloudy and there was little moonlight on the night of May 25, making visibility a problem for the teenager.

There is also a chance that the fall into the water may have caused Cameron to suffer a concussion, one expert tells Inside Edition.

"When he jumped into the water, he could have hit his head on the boat," says swim safety expert Jim Spears. "He could have hit his head on the water, like slapping the water with his head. Either way could cause dizziness, a concussion or confusion."

Further complicating search efforts could be the fact that the continental shelf drops to approximately 30,000 feet just a few hundred meters east of where Cameron fell into the water. That deep drop in the sea floor in the area between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico is used by many experts to explain why people have previously gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle.

Many believe that a shark may have been involved, a theory that first emerged when an official with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force noted that the waters were "shark infested" while announcing the suspension of search efforts.

Video purporting to show Cameron in the water emerged four days later, first appearing on TMZ , which speculated that he had been dared to jump overboard without providing evidence or a source for that information.

A few days later, Fox News ran an interview with a source who wished to remain anonymous, but claimed to be the mother of a teenager who had been friends with Cameron and on the boat that night.

"This was a booze cruise, and they were on their way back when this happened. My son texted me when it happened, saying, ‘Cameron jumped off. They can’t find him.' They were out there until 2, 3 in the morning,'" read the Fox News report. "It was terrible weather that night. The kids were cold, wet and traumatized. The girls were in bikinis and bathing suits. The guys were giving them their shirts. It was a bad time to bring drunk 18-year-olds out into waters near this island where there's nothing."

Official declared Cameron as "missing at sea," and a spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy said that Robbins' family did not wish for the agency to look into the theory that a shark killed the teenager after he went overboard.

To date however, no member of the Defense Force or Coast Guard has confirmed claims that Cameron jumped overboard.

Why falling off a cruise ship is so deadly

louisiana cruise ship death

A 35-year-old Australian man who fell overboard on his way back to Brisbane. A Louisiana teen who jumped ship on a dare. A 7-year-old boy who died after falling into the ocean, followed by his mother, who tried to save him.

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are incredibly rare. But when they happen, they usually end in death, experts say.

The Coast Guard said last week it had given up on its search for 30-year-old Jaylen Hill, who went overboard during a four-day Carnival Cruise trip from Florida to the Bahamas. It searched more than 1,300 square miles for him.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family,” the Coast Guard said on Twitter.

Hill was reported missing by a travel companion hours after he was last seen. Experts say such time gaps between a fall and the start of a search are a big part of why overboard incidents are so deadly.

Even if crew members are immediately aware of the incident, it takes the average ship at least a mile to turn around. The ship usually dispatches life boats and alerts authorities, such as the Coast Guard, which may not be close enough to assist, said Ross Klein, a cruise industry researcher and retired professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In many cases, ships are not aware that someone has gone overboard until a travel partner reports them missing, which could be hours or days later.

By then, it’s often too late.

“It’s a huge ocean. Just being found at all would be incredible,” Klein said. “The longer you are out there, whether you’re alive or not, the lower the possibility of being recovered. The vast majority of people are gone forever.”

Even in cases where a fall is noticed immediately, a lot can go wrong.

“The fall itself can kill you, a cruise ship engine can suck you underneath the water, fear and anxiety or intoxication could prevent you from swimming — there’s many different scenarios,” said Brett Rivkind, a Miami lawyer who specializes in maritime law and represents families in overboard cases. A person can also become unconscious from hypothermia in as little as 15 minutes , depending on sea temperatures.

At least 386 people were reported to have gone overboard, voluntarily or by accident, from 2000 to 2020, according to data Klein compiled. He began tracking overboard cases in 1995 using media reports, tips, information requests and other methods, later serving as an expert witness before Congress.

“People overboard was an area that hadn’t been studied, and, really, there was no data,” he said. “Even within the industry, they said back in 2012 and 2013 before Congress that they don’t keep track of this.”

While it’s true that tens of millions of people vacation on cruise ships every year without incident, experts say a combination of mitigatable risks and loose safety regulations are contributing to deaths.

In a 2020 study , a professor examined more than 620 cruise deaths from 2000 through the end of 2019. He found that overboard incidents — falling, jumping or being thrown — were the leading cause of death among passengers and crew members, accounting for 23 percent of all deaths.

“It’s a lot more common than people think,” said the professor, Travis Heggie, who tracks tourist deaths around the world at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Death rates for overboard incidents vary significantly among cruise lines, according to Klein’s calculations, which he said proves more can be done to protect passengers.

Only a handful of cruise lines have installed man-overboard systems, which use sensors or other technology to immediately detect when a person has fallen or jumped off the vessel, Klein said. (The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requires vessels to “integrate technology” for detecting falls overboard “to the extent that such technology is available,” and some operators have argued that existing technology is not reliable enough yet.)

The safest cruise lines were able to rescue only 40 percent of overboard passengers, and most save far fewer, he said. The rescue rate was as low as 6 percent on at least one cruise line.

7 facts about the world's biggest cruise ship

The amount of alcohol being served on cruise ships is also a concern cited by several experts, who said passengers are being overserved. Alcohol is involved in up to 60 percent of overboard cases, according to Klein, and alcoholic drinks have become one of the leading sources of onboard revenue for cruise lines in recent years.

“Cruise lines make a lot of money serving alcohol,” Rivkind said, “and what they’ve done over the years is, they’ve moved to all-you-can-drink policies. They often allow them to drink as many as 15 alcoholic beverages a day. To me, that’s a big source of the problem.”

Defenders of the industry often characterize cruise ships as a microcosm of a city, with the same problems that come up on land. But Heggie and others disagree.

“Nobody is saying 23 percent of hotel client deaths are from falling off balconies,” he said.

Breaking news, cruise passenger from law enforcement family arrested after being accused of raping woman on ship.

A Texas man from a law enforcement family was arrested when his cruise arrived in Florida after a woman accused him of raping her onboard.

Juan Campos, 28, was arrested when the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas docked at Port Everglades over the weekend — days after the 20-year-old woman alleged he attacked her mid-cruise on Aug. 28, according to Local 10 News.

The accuser alleged that when Campos penetrated her against her will with an unknown object, she “pushed him and told him to stop and it hurts,” according to an arrest report obtained by the outlet.

Juan Campos mugshot

She told cops that Campos then tried to force her into performing oral sex on him — and tried to penetrate her again when that failed, according to the report.

However, Campos’ attorney insisted that the sex was consensual — and that his client stopped when asked.

“It was a normal cruise, he was with friends, they met some people on board and next thing you know, he’s charged with this crime,” the attorney, Ed Hoeg, told Local 10.

“It sounds like they were making out, it started going a little too far, when the lady said ‘Stop,’ when she verbally expressed ‘Stop,’ he stopped,” Hoeg said.

Campos is originally from Houston and from a law enforcement family — all of whom are shocked by the rape allegations, the attorney told the outlet.

“The family says this guy has no criminal history, he’s a great kid, he was on a vacation and they are shocked by the allegations,” Hoeg said.

ship

Campos was removed from the ship at Port Everglades and remains behind bars at the Broward County Main Jail, where a judge granted him a $20,000 bond.

The allegations come as a woman who accused a Carnival crew member of raping her during a 2018 trip was awarded over $12 million from the cruise line following a lengthy legal battle.

Judge Kathleen Williams made the ruling last week after the alleged victim claimed Carnival staffer Fredy Anggara lured her into a closet, locked the door and sexually assaulted her aboard the Carnival Miracle on Dec. 1, 2018, according to a complaint.

cruise ship

Jurors awarded her $10 million in 2022 and after Carnival fought that verdict, Williams tacked on another $2 million, according to court filings.

Anggara had never been arrested in connection to the incident, nor has he been listed as a defendant in the legal action.

Ship death 'person of interest' avoids jail for assault

Dragan Losic was identified as a person of interest at the inquest into Dianne Brimble's death. Photo: Mick Tsikas/AAP PHOTOS

A man once identified by a coroner as a person of interest in the 2002 cruise ship death of Dianne Brimble has been spared prison for assaulting his wife.

Dragan Losic, 63, was sentenced to 14 months in prison but walked from the District Court of South Australia on Wednesday after a judge ruled that time he had already spent in custody and on home detention was an appropriate penalty.

Judge Carmen Matteo sentenced Losic to a nine-month, non-parole period on four counts of aggravated assault.

Losic was one of eight Adelaide men who travelled together on the Pacific Sky cruise ship in September 2002, during which Ms Brimble, 42, died after consuming a toxic mix of the drug fantasy and alcohol.

A coroner identified all eight men as persons of interest in the case, finding the mother-of-three was "unknowingly drugged by unscrupulous individuals who were intent on denigrating her for their own gratification".

Losic has never been charged in relation to the case and no one has ever been convicted over Ms Brimble's death.

Three of the other members of the group had convictions recorded against them in connection to the case but did not serve jail time.

Judge Matteo said that Losic had a tumultuous marriage that "degenerated into an unhealthy relationship".

He pleaded guilty to four charges, including two assaults on his wife in front of a child.

In one of the attacks, he pulled his wife out of bed by her hair onto the floor. The couple has since separated.

"The court has a duty to ensure that offending within a domestic relationship behind closed doors is publicly denounced," Judge Matteo told Losic.

"Importantly, you have acknowledged through your counsel that your behaviour was completely unacceptable."

Losic has various prior convictions for assault, dishonesty and drug possession, cultivation and production.

He spent six weeks in custody after his arrest in July 2022. He has since served two years of home detention while on bail.

"You have, in effect, served a punishment which I regard as appropriate," Judge Matteo said.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Texas man arrested at port everglades, accused of raping woman on cruise.

Sanela Sabovic , Reporter

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Texas man was arrested in South Florida over the weekend accused of raping a woman on a cruise ship.

The suspect, Juan Campos, and the victim were on a cruise last week when she told authorities he raped her.

Campos, 28, was arrested as he got off Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas at Port Everglades and remains at the Broward County Main Jail.

His attorney says when the victim said stop, he did.

“It was a normal cruise, he was with friends, they met some people on board and next thing you know, he’s charged with this crime,” said attorney Ed Hoeg.

Both Campos and the victim, a 20-year-old woman, were aboard the ship last week.

According to an arrest report, on Aug. 28 around 2 a.m. they were engaged in close physical contact.

“It sounds like they were making out, it started going a little too far, when the lady said ‘stop,’ when she verbally expressed ‘stop,’ he stopped,” said Hoeg.

The arrest report states that the victim was penetrated with an unknown object against her will, going on to say, “In the feeling of pain, the victim placed her hands on the defendant’s shoulders, pushed him and told him to stop and it hurts.”

Per the report, the victim told deputies that Campos tried to have her perform oral sex on him, but was unsuccessful and tried to penetrate her again, but was also unsuccessful.

“That’s not the way I read it, otherwise they would have charged it with force or using violence,” said Hoeg. “As the police themselves put it on here, it’s sexual battery, no force or violence.”

Local 10 News has learned that Campos is from Houston and comes from a law enforcement family.

“The family says this guy has no criminal history, he’s a great kid, he was on a vacation and they are shocked by the allegations,” said Hoeg.

A judge granted Campos a $20,000 bond.
