Cyclisme Lyon et le Tour de France, une belle et longue histoire

Le Tour de France et Lyon, c'est une longue histoire. Dès la première édition en 1903, au même titre que les grandes villes françaises, Lyon figure sur le parcours qui compte six étapes pour cette première.

Lyon, première arrivée d'étape du Tour en 1903

Lyon entre immédiatement dans la grande histoire du Tour de France en accueillant la première arrivée d'étape de l'histoire du Tour au lendemain du départ de Paris le 1er juillet 1903. C'est Maurice Garin , un coureur lensois, qui franchit le premier la ligne d'arrivée lyonnaise, quai Arloing, après une course de 17h45min 13s. Avec 24 secondes d'avance sur Émile Page, victime d'une chute en plein sprint.

Maurice Garin empoche alors 1500 francs pour son exploit. A l'issue des six étapes, il gagne le premier Tour de France avec une moyenne de 25,68Km/h.

Après un peu de repos, le Tour repart, le 5 juillet depuis la place Bellecour, direction Marseille...

A l'exception de 1905 et 1906, le Tour de France passera chaque année par Lyon jusqu'en 1910.

Avant de mourir à la Guerre à 28 ans, en mai 1915, le Luxembourgeois François Faber décidément toujours en réussite à Lyon s'impose le 9 juillet 1910 sur le quai Saint-Clair.

Lyon dans la course depuis 1947

Il faudra ensuite attendre de longues années, les suspensions pendant les deux guerres mondiales, pour retrouver Lyon sur les parcours. Pendant toutes ces années, le parcours de la course réalise "un chemin de ronde", le long des frontières de l'Hexagone. Plutôt qu'à Lyon, le Tour passe alors à Grenoble.

L'année 1947 marque le retour du Tour à Lyon. La 6e étape qui relie Besançon à la capitale des Gaules en 249 km est remportée par Lucien Teisseire. Près de 20 000 spectateurs l'attendent au stade municipal de Lyon lors de ce "Tour de la Libération". Lyon est gâtée au terme d'une échapée de quatre audacieux coureurs à la sortie de Lons-le-Saunier. Le Lyonnais Gaston Audier accroche au passage une belle 5e place.

Le Tour revient en 1950 pour un contre-la-montre entre Saint-Étienne et Lyon. En 1953, Lyon est une nouvelle fois ville d'arrivée de l'étape Briançon-Lyon. Jean Forestier est le grand animateur d'une échappée de 212 km dont profite au final son partenaire Georges Meunier. Le lendemain, les coureurs quittent Lyon pour un contre-la-montre en direction de Saint-Étienne. Le vainqueur n'est autre que le célèbre Louison Bobet.

En 1954 et 1956, Lyon accueille encore les coureurs.

Précieux équipier du maillot jaune Louison Bobet, Jean Forestier s'impose sur ses terres le 24 juillet 1954, au sprint, et sous les acclamations de la foule du stade municipal.

En 1956, le Lyonnais s'illustre encore. Motivé par le contre la montre Saint-Étienne/Lyon, Jean Forestier se classe 12e et second tricolore au terme d'une étape enlevée par l'Espagnol Miguel Bover. Les coureurs repartent le lendemain, le 27 juillet, par Tassin-la-Demi-Lune et le col de la Luère pour rejoindre Montluçon. Une avant dernière étape qui confirmera la victoire finale et surprise du Français Roger Walkowiak.

1962: victoire de Jacques Anquetil au contre la montre

Sur le plan sportif, l'année est importante. Jacques Anquetil remporte la victoire dans le contre-la-montre entre Bourgoin et Lyon le 13 juillet. Le cycliste fait une démonstration de son talent et s'empare à Lyon du maillot jaune à la veille de l’arrivée finale. Il gagne en 1962 son troisième Tour de France.

De cette journée, on retiendra aussi son duel mémorable avec Raymond Poulidor, qui pour son premier Tour de France avait pris le départ avec une main dans le plâtre.

En 1965, Henry Anglade tente une attaque

Sur ses terres, Henry Anglade attaque au pied du col de l'Epine ce 11 juillet 1965 lors de l'étape Aix-les-Bains/Lyon. Il est "alors ligoté par le peloton" comme titre Le Progrès. C'est le Belge Rick Van Looy qui triomphe à Gerland devant 12 000 spectateurs avant d'être félicité par le maire de Lyon, Lyon Pradet, et par Miss France.

Le saviez-vous? Le Lorrain d’origine, né à Thionville, venu enfant à Lyon, demeure le seul « Lyonnais » a avoir été maillot jaune. Une journée sur le Tour 1960 à l’issue de la 5e étape à Saint-Malo. Parmi un palmarès fourni, Henry Anglade a également terminé 2e du Tour de France 1959.

En 1979, revendication sociale

Le Tour arrive à quelques encablures de Lyon, pour la première fois sur la commune de Saint-Priest.

Ce 17 juillet 1979, la chaleur est étouffante pour les coureurs qui descendent de l'Alpe-d'Huez. L'ambiance est chaude aussi à Saint-Priest avec une manifestation des ouvriers de RVI (Renault Véhicules Industriels) qui s'invite sur la ligne d'arrivée.

L’arrivée se fait en plein centre-ville. Il n’y a pas d’échappée. L’Allemand Dietrich Thurau, meilleur jeune en 1977, règle le finish. Bernard Hinault est juste derrière, 4e de l’étape et leader du Tour qu’il remporte. Le lendemain, le Tour s’élance de Saint-Priest et se rend à Dijon en passant par Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure, Genas et Jons.

 Saint-Priest garde un lien fort avec la Grande boucle. Le Tour est en effet arrivé dans cette commune cinq fois et en est parti trois fois depuis 1979.

1991: "LA" grande année

Lyon accueille le prologue du Tour de France. C'est la fête!

Les coureurs restent près de trois jours dans l’agglomération. Thierry Marie, spécialiste de la discipline, remporte ce prologue inaugural au parc de la Tête d'Or. Son maillot jaune va voguer le jour suivant des épaules de Greg Lemon à celles du Danois Rolf Sörensen. Le lendemain du prologue, Lyon accueille en effet deux étapes – une pratique à la mode à l’époque : un parcours court le matin, réglé au sprint, et un contre-la-montre par équipe l’après-midi.

Le centenaire de 2003, forcément à Lyon

2003 marque le centenaire du Tour de France. Les organisateurs, pour l’occasion, ont décidé de choisir toutes les villes où est passé le premier Tour, en 1903. Lyon est donc une étape obligatoire.

Pour le centième, Lyon aurait sans doute aimé autre chose qu'une étape de sprinteurs qui s'est dessinée tout au bout de l'interminable avenue Jean-Jaurès à Gerland.

Le lendemain, Lyon se souviendra du départ dans une drôle de liesse populaire sur la place Bellecour, qui va porter chance à Richard Virenque, échappé et vainqueur d'étape à Morzine. Il va du même coup pouvoir endosser le maillot jaune pendant une journée.

En 2013, Matteo Trentin remporte l'étape à Lyon

Dix ans que Lyon n'avait pas accueilli la Grande Boucle. Alors en 2013, il s'agit pour les habitants de fêter dignement l'évènement. L'objectif est rempli de fort belle manière. L'engouement populaire autour de la course est exceptionnel, et la foule est regroupée en masse dans les derniers kilomètres de l'étape.

Les cyclistes ont droit, pour leur arrivée sur Lyon, à un parcours de 18 kilomètres en ville, pédalant sur les collines de La Duchère et de la Croix-Rousse.

Sur le plan sportif dans cette étape lyonnaise, le peloton dirigé par la formation Sky, dont le maillot jaune Christopher Froome fait partie, a laissé un bon de sortie à plusieurs coureurs, sans jamais chercher à combler l'écart. Plusieurs coureurs français étaient présents dans cette échappée, mais aucun n'a réussi à l'emporter. Ce n'est pas faute d'avoir tenté, puisque Julien Simon (Saujasun) s'est extirpé du groupe de tête à 15 kilomètres de l'arrivée. Blel Kadri (AG2R) l'a également imité. 

Mais les deux coureurs étaient trop justes, et Julien Simon a été repris après avoir dépassé la flamme rouge. Il ne signe finalement pas sa première victoire dans le Tour à Lyon.

L’Italien Matteo Trentin ouvre son palmarès au bout d’une étape lyonnaise qui a connu un immense succès populaire. Mais déjà se profile le mont Ventoux, au départ de Givors le lendemain.

Le parcours 2020 pour un nouveau rendez-vous

Samedi , la caravane fera son entrée dans le Rhône à hauteur de Grézieu-le-Marché à 15 h 05. Les coureurs arriveront, eux, dans les monts du Lyonnais entre 16 h 31 et 16 h 50, selon la moyenne horaire de la course. Ils traverseront Aveize et Duerne avant de passer au col des Brosses, sur la commune de Montroman.

Grézieu-la-Varenne, Craponne, Francheville et Tassin seront traversées tout aussi vite. La montée de la Duchère (16 h 11 pour la caravane, entre 17 h 31 et 17 h 56 pour les coureurs) vous permettra de profiter du spectacle un peu plus, même si elle est également très roulante.

Après un détour par Caluire, l’arrivée à Lyon se fera sur les quais du Rhône. Mais sans public le long des quais Jules-Courmont et Jean-Moulin, dans une zone comprise entre les ponts Morand et de la Guillotière, protocole sanitaire oblige.

L'Ain, terre d'accueil du Tour de France 2025 ?

La légende antonin rolland fête ses 100 ans à sainte-euphémie, « pon bike est à privas car l’a7 est la silicon valley du vélo ».

Pour le départ, dimanche 13 septembre (10 h 40 pour la caravane, 12 h 25 pour les coureurs),rendez-vous à Gerland

L'étape de ce samedi 11 septembre passera par la Loire et la Haute-Loire. Entre les départements ligériens et altiligériens et la Grande Boucle, c'est une grande histoire marquée par de nombreuses arrivées d'étapes. Les images des dernières arrivées dans la région ici.

Tour de France 2020 Route stage 15: Lyon - Grand Colombier

Climbing the same mountain several times, it is not very common on the Tour, although not entirely new. The 18th stage of the 2013 Tour of France tackled the climb to Alpe d’Huez twice. On the 13th of September three of the four access roads up the Grand Colombier will be covered. The last ascent goes all the way to the summit.

The shortest route from Lyon to the Col du Grand Colombier is 110 kilometres and the riders don’t waste much time to reach the foot of the climb. Subsequently, they ride up and down the mountain twice to conclude the race with a final haul up.

The first ascent is Montée de la Selle de Fromentel. Amounting to 11.1 kilometres at 8.1%, the climb hold its trump cards up its sleeve until the last three kilometres. Respectively, these go up at 11.5%, 14.5% and 12.5% – on average!

The descent runs onto the next climb. The first kilometres are nothing special, but the Col de la Biche bares its teeth after 3 kilometres. The actual climb is 6.9 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 8.9%. The middle section is toughest with double digit gradients for 2 relentless kilometres.

As said, the last ascent goes all the way to the top of the Grand Colombier. The haul up begins in Culoz and amounts to 17.4 kilometres, in which the riders conquer an elevation gain of 1,244 metres. The average slope is 7.1% with some stretches peaking out to 12%. The last 400 metres are especially interesting as this section rises at 10%.

Thibaut Pinot and Primoz Roglic must be happy men. The Col du Grand Colombier is a climb to their liking. They climbed to victory on these slopes in the Tour de l’Ain of 2019 (Pinot) and 2020 (Roglic).

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

Cycling’s Most Emasculating Tradition: The Toy Lion Trophy

It's not exactly the Stanley Cup, but there's a reason why all Tour de France stage winners receive a stuffed lion on the podium.

You’ll never see Peyton Manning triumphantly holding up a Mickey Mouse doll after winning the Super Bowl. Or Lebron James cuddling a teddy bear after winning the NBA Finals. No. Those dudes hold up trophies. Big-ass, sterling silver trophies.

So what’s the deal with giving cutesy stuffed lions to Tour de France stage winners? What do the cyclists do with them? Cut the heads off and mount them like hunting trophies? Stick them in a glass case so they won’t get mixed up with their kids’ Beanie Boos ? Snuggle with them for good luck?

What gives, cycling? What’s the deal with the weirdly infantile tradition that will surely play out again at this year’s Tour? 

Turns out plenty of cycling forum users have their own theories. Perhaps ergogenic drugs are delivered inside the lion, right under the WADA officials’ noses. Or, as Nigel-YZ1 wrote on cyclechat.net , cyclists get the toy “to hold in front of themselves to avoid the more revealing pics of them in lycra making a scandal in the tabloids.”  

Plausible theories, cycling enthusiasts. But the lion was actually the mascot of longtime Tour de France title sponsor Crédit Lyonnais. According to French sports magazine L’Équipe , the bank has been handing out the fluffy lions at the Tour since 1987. Forty-five of the little guys attend the Tour each year, with one distributed to each day’s winner and the rest closely guarded to avoid loss or (zut alors!) theft.

A few years ago, L’Équipe writes , marketing execs at the bank decided the lions were outdated and thought about replacing them with a more traditional big-ass trophy—particularly becuase the lion is no longer the bank’s mascot. (“It was a bit aggressive,” Crédit Lyonnais PR man Arnaud Loubier told PEZ Cycling News .) But common sense prevailed (“le bon sens a prévalu”) and the officials stuck with the stuffed prizes.

Crédit Lyonnais sponsorship exec Sophie Moressee-Pichot says you shouldn’t see cyclists at any other race holding up the stuffed lion, even though the bank sponsors several other events that Le Tour’s production company—the ASO—puts on, including Paris-Nice, Criterium International, Paris-Roubaix, Tour de Picardie, Tour de Languedoc-Roussillon, Tour de L’Avenir, and Tour of Burkina Faso. The bank only uses the lion at the Tour de France.

With Crédit Lyonnais signed on through 2018 as a TdF sponsor, expect to see more champion cyclists holding up stuffed lions for years to come.

About the Traboules of Lyon

The traboules in Lyon are older than you may think; their origin can be traced back to the 4th century! After the fall of the Roman Empire, the aqueducts bringing water to Lyon started to fall, and the city built the first traboules to allow its inhabitants quicker access to the Old Town from the river.

In Lyon, there are many narrow passages, but not all of them are traboules. Here are the main characteristics of the traboules, Lyon’s unique attraction:

• It is a path reserved for pedestrians, and it crosses one or more buildings
• It connects one street to another
• In a traboule, there’s always an inner courtyard to provide the buildings and the passage with natural light
• There’s also a staircase that serves two or more buildings (usually through galleries)

Later in the 19th century, when Lyon became a major center for the silk trade, the traboules allowed the canuts (the name given to the silk traders in Lyon) to easily move their goods from the places of production to the markets located in the city center. Because most of the traboules were covered, they also protected the bolts of precious silk from rain, allowing goods transportation even in inclement weather.

Thanks to their usefulness in the daily life of the people of Lyon, traboules became over the years a characteristic feature of Lyon’s town planning from the Renaissance until the 19th century. Their integration into the city’s urban planning was even planned from the construction of the building.

Because of their secret nature, some of these traboules were the landmarks of the Canut Revolts , the major revolts that occurred between 1831 and 1848. They were among the first well-defined worker uprisings of the period known as the “Industrial Revolution.”

In the 20th century, during the Second World War, the traboules in Lyon were used by the resistance fighting against occupying German forces.

The traboules are secret passages, often hidden behind magnificent Renaissance doors. Even today, only a true Lyonnais has a good knowledge about Lyon’s traboules, so you can take your traboules exploration as a kind of treasure hunt.

Today, the most beautiful traboules are located in Vieux-Lyon and the Croix-Rousse neighborhoods. Originally, there were many traboules in the Presqu’Ile too, but the major urban planning works carried out in this sector in the 19th century caused the disappearance of the weaving workshops, a large part of the old buildings… and part of the traboules.

The traboules are private passages, usually linked to the courtyard of a residential building. Since 1990, an agreement between the City Council and the residents of properties with traboules allows access to everybody from morning to evening in exchange for maintenance, restoration, and lightning. Most of the traboules open to the public are marked on the exterior façade, and they have informative panels in French and English highlighting their history and architectural features.

It's a much-anticipated summer event. Every summer, the Tour de France electrifies the roads of France to the rhythm of a peloton led by the yellow jersey! The 2024 edition promises to be historic, with a start in Florence, Italy, and an unprecedented finish in Nice, on the Promenade des Anglais. See you June 29!

For the first time in its history, the main start will take place in Florence, Italy. The riders will then criss-cross the southern Alps and the Occitan coastline before tackling the Pyrenees and then crossing Brittany along part of the Atlantic Coast .

The race promises to be a spectacular affair, with 3,586 kilometres to be covered in 21 stages. Riders will face a number of challenges along the way: more than 27 passes of 2nd, 1st or Hors Catégorie (Beyond Classification), 7 mountain stages and 4 high altitude finishes.   

A grand finale... on the Côte d'Azur

Like every year, Paris will host a stage of the Tour de France, but it won't be the last or the least competitive. Quite the contrary, in fact... Just a few days before the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, the riders in the peloton will set off from the Château de Versailles on Bastille Day, 14 July, before parading through the streets of the capital in a 44km time trial that could well prove decisive in the battle for the yellow jersey.

After passing through the south of Burgundy , the Tour de France returned to its familiar route through the Alps before descending the Rhône Valley to Provence and the Côte d'Azur ...

For the first time in the history of the Tour de France, the 111th edition of the Grande Boucle will finish in Nice, on the iconic Promenade des Anglais, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A dream finale on the Côte d'Azur on 21 July. Emotion, suspense, adrenalin and thrills will all be on offer!

Initiated in 1903, the Tour de France is a legendary cycling race of international renown. Created by Henri Desgrange, director of the newspaper l'Auto, a visionary who wanted to create a sporting event to enhance his medium's standing and increase sales.

The Tour de France has become a beloved tradition, held every year for over a hundred years (apart from during the two world wars ). Cyclists from all over the world come to fight to win the famous (and famously coveted) yellow jersey! The event is broadcast in no less than 190 countries and followed by millions of people around the world.

Four riders have won the Tour de France five times: Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Last year, in 2023, it was Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard who won for the second time.

On 12 August 2024, after the Paris Olympic Games, the top cyclists worldwide will start from Rotterdam in the Netherlands and cycle over a thousand kilometers.

eBay Finds: Crédit Lyonnais Tour de France yellow jersey cuddly lion

There are a few out there for sale, but expect to pay top dollar for the Tour's famous maillot jaune mascot

It's become the symbol of receiving a yellow jersey on the podium at the Tour de France , and is almost as famous and talked about as the maillot jaune: it's jersey-sponsor Crédit Lyonnais' cuddly lion, and we've found some for sale on eBay.

The one for sale here – at an eye-watering US$224.99 (£175) – seems to have made its way all the way to California, although the seller also has a slightly cheaper one available – but without a jersey on. They're apparently both 13 inches (33cm) tall, and so the seller admits they aren't the same as the bigger ones given to the riders on the podium, but still, it doesn't get much better for the cycling fan who has everything.

French eBay – eBay.fr – in particular looks as though it's the place to go for more lions, and they tend to be a little cheaper there, too.

According to an article about the lions on  Outside.com  in 2014, French sports newspaper  L'Equipe  says that the cuddly toys were introduced to the podium of the race in 1987, which was the year that Ireland's Stephen Roche won the Tour.

At some point around 2010, Crédit Lyonnais apparently considered not using the lions anymore, but they eventually saw sense, and the cuddly toys – in French, the 'Lyon' of Lyonnais is pronounced the same as the French word for lion, which is lion – appear to be here to stay.

We have yet to find a 'full-sized' lion for sale – like those given out on the podium – but then, really, who's ever going to sell one of those?

Un dramatique accident du travail de plus. Le mardi 24 septembre, dans le 15e arrondissement de Paris , un ouvrier est décédé après avoir été écrasé par une armature métallique sur le chantier de la Tour Triangle .

Père de deux enfants, la victime, un Portugais âgé de 45 ans, est morte après avoir été écrasé par une armature métallique sur le chantier de la très controversée Tour Triangle .

Malgré le deuil et le choc de ses collègues, le chantier continue

L’homme détourait les armatures qui tiennent les piliers en béton du dernier étage de la tour quand l’une d’entre elles s’est décrochée, indique BFM Paris . Selon les responsables du chantier, cités par le média, l’opération en question était « classique et pas particulièrement délicate ».

Le parquet de Paris indique qu’une enquête du chef d’homicide involontaire a été confiée au commissariat du 15e arrondissement et à l’inspection du travail suite à l’accident.

Si les activités concernées par l’accident restent arrêtées jusqu’à nouvel ordre, les autres activités, elles, ont repris ce mercredi 25 septembre malgré la demande, par la ville, d’une suspension provisoire du chantier et le choc des collègues de la victime.
