This day trip to Gozo and Comino starts from the tourist town of Bugibba, where the modern and stable catamaran Sea Adventure departs on an unforgettable two island cruise.

This small city has a wealth of charm and history to explore, and the first known settlers date back to the Neolithic times. 

The crown jewel of Victoria is the Citadel, which rises high above the city’s narrow winding streets. This impressive structure was granted UNESCO world heritage site in 2016. Take a walk around this fantastic fortress and visit several of its fascinating small museums and a state of the art Visitors’ Centre: The Cathedral Museum, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Nature Museum, the Old Prison, the Old Gunpowder Magazine, the Grain Silos, the Battery and the World War II Shelter.

Nestle through the small alleyways of Victoria to the bustling St Georges Square, here you can eat or relax in one of the restaurant’s or visit the imposing baroque Basilica situated there.

Crystal lagoon

Lastly, during high season we stop for one hour at the stunning but less well known Crystal Lagoon. It is surrounded by cliffs and therefore only accessible by boats. With unbelievably clear water, it is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Take a plunge into its crystal clear waters from one of our three waterslides, or jump from the top deck if you dare! A true snorkelers paradise, where you can even swim inside the caves.

With the day drawing to a close, we cruise back to Bugibba, but not before entering the Santa Maria pirate caves and viewing the “Elephants Head”, an incredible rock formation.

• The Captain reserves the right to cancel or alter the trip according to the weather conditions.
• We reserve the right to change routes and/or vessels, as well as start and end locations when weather conditions, shallows, or other legitimate reasons so require. We will, as far as possible, inform passengers thereof in a timely manner.
• We may change the boat to a new large sailing catamaran during December, January, February and March. This boat does not have underwater windows or slides.

Malta to Gozo: How to Visit and Is it Worth it?

Are you considering making the trip from Malta to Gozo and wondering if it’s worth it? Here’s our experience and everything you need to know. 

Malta is one of the great hidden gems of Europe. It’s such a gorgeous island and there’s a surprising amount of great things to do there. However, one of the best things to do in Malta is to leave Malta completely and head over to Gozo. 

This little sister island is reachable within just 45 minutes and is such a great way to see more of the stunning culture and history that the island is known for. 

 So, if you’re visiting Malta and are wondering exactly how to get from Malta to Gozo and what to do there, here’s everything you need to know.

Where is Gozo?

Gozo is a small island located in the Maltese archipelago. It’s northwest of the main island of Malta and separated by a roughly 3-mile wide channel, known as the Gozo Channel. 

Gozo is the second-largest island in the group and is known for its picturesque villages, beautiful coastline, and historic sites, including the ancient Ggantija temples, which are some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world.

While there are many great things to do in Malta , I also highly recommend a trip to Gozo. It’s a smaller island and seems to move at a slower pace than the bustling Malta. As such, it’s super relaxing and beautiful to visit. 

Malta to Gozo ferry

The most popular way to get to Gozo from Malta is by ferry. Of course, you can also go on a private boat, but the ferry is the most popular option. Luckily, it’s very easy to book. 

The ferry port is located at the northwestern tip of the island, near Popeye’s Village . You’ll need to travel to the Cirkewwa Passenger Terminal . You can do this via public transport. 

When we visited Malta, we stayed in Rabat, so had to get a bus to St Paul’s Bay, then another bus up to the terminal. This takes roughly an hour and 20 minutes. 

If you’re staying in Valletta, there’s a bus that goes straight there, passing through St Paul’s Bay on the way. This takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes though, so there’s really not much difference. You can also take the fast ferry directly from Valletta, which takes 45 minutes.

If you’re coming directly from the airport, you can also catch the X1 bus directly to Ċirkewwa. This takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs just €2.

Tickets and how much does it cost

Once you’ve reached the passenger terminal, you can buy tickets directly from the counter. It’s a little confusing, however, because they don’t actually give you a ticket when you leave Malta. 

Instead, you buy your ticket from Mġarr Harbour on the way back to Malta, which is pretty bizarre, but it seems to work. The tickets cost €4.65 per adult.

Once you’ve boarded the boat, it takes roughly 25-30 minutes to reach Gozo. It was a very smooth crossing when we went, which I very much appreciated!

Once you reach Gozo

Gozo is only 26 square miles, so it’s fairly easy to get around and you can see a lot of the island even if you just go for a Gozo day trip. When you arrive at Mġarr Harbour in Gozo, there are several ways to get to Victoria, the historical capital.

You can take public transport and there is a bus that goes from the terminal to Victoria in just 25 minutes and buses run every 30. However, the bus system in Gozo isn’t the most practical because, while the service is reliable, all of the buses depart and return to Victoria.

This means that if you want to get from the tombs to the salt pans, you have to first get a bus to Victoria, and then get a second bus to your destination, instead of just taking a bus straight there. 

It’s not the most efficient way to get around which is why I don’t really recommend it. 

By far, the easiest way we found to get around Gozo was to use the hop-on-hop-off bus service. This bus takes you all over the island, stopping at the most important sites and landmarks. 

It’s a great way to see the best things in Gozo without always going back to the capital and what we did when we visited the island. 

Of course, you can also get around Gozo by car, taxi, quab bike, or bicycle, which are ideal if you’re spending longer than a day in Gozo.

What is there to do in Gozo?

There are so many amazing things to see in Gozo. We could easily have spent longer than a day trip on the island as there is a great range of historical sights, beautiful natural landmarks, and wonderful buildings to explore. 

Some of the best things to do include:

• Exploring the historical citadel of Victoria. 
• Visit the beautiful Tal-Mixta cave
• See the Ggantija Temples
• Visit the Salt Pans
• Visit the stunning Mgarr Ix-Xini Beach
• Go on a boat trip to Dwejra
• Admire the Ta’Pinu Shrine

The best Malta to Gozo Tour

Of course, another of the best ways to get from Malta to Gozo is via a guided tour. These tours offer a complete day tour of the island, and take you to some other beautiful coastal spots including the Blue Lagoon and Comino. Plus, they include return transport from your hotel. 

If you want to visit Gozo by guided tour, I recommend this tour.

This makes it super convenient to reach Gozo and you can explore with an expert guide who will show you around and give you loads more information about the sites. 

What is the best time to visit Gozo?

You can visit Gozo all year round. We visited Malta in winter. It was for New Year’s Eve actually which coincided with my Dad’s 60th birthday, so we killed two birds with one stone. Despite it being the complete off-season, we had the best time. 

It was much quieter than the peak summer months, and much nicer for it. Admittedly, if you’re searching for a beach break, I don’t recommend going in December, because you’re not likely to catch a tan. 

But, it’s still one of the warmest places to visit in December in Europe and well worth a trip if you want some winter sun. If winter doesn’t appeal to you, then I recommend visiting Malta between April and May and September and October. 

During these times, you’ll find temperatures within the mid to high 20’s and the sea will be warm enough to swim in. But, the summer crowds won’t quite have arrived yet.

However, both Malta and Gozo can be visited all year round, so you really can visit whenever you want!

How long do you need to visit Gozo?

We spent a day on Gozo and, while we were able to see a lot of the island thanks to the hop-on-hop-off bus, we could ideally have done with another day there at least. There’s a lot more to Gozo than people expect, from beautiful beaches to fascinating history.

So, while you can certainly see a great deal of Gozo in a day trip from Malta, I recommend spending a little longer there, to really appreciate the island.

Is travelling from Malta to Gozo worth it?

Yes, it’s 100% worth travelling from Malta to Gozo. It’s super easy to get between the two and there’s so much wonderful history you can see on both islands. 

While Gozo is similar to Malta, it has a significantly different vibe and feels less touristy and somehow calmer. There are also plenty more beautiful and historic sites to see on Gozo, from the shrines and temples to the beaches and ocean views. 

Overall, if you’re considering a trip from Malta to Gozo, I cannot recommend it enough and I hope this article has helped with planning your trip.

Our tour to Gozo starts with the fast ferry service from Valletta direct to the pretty port of Mgarr. The charm of Gozo is apparent the moment you arrive there. Greener, more rural and smaller than Malta. Our tour is a combination of scenic spots, historical sites, local culture and food.

Due to our early start we have an opportunity of visiting a 75 year old traditional bakery in one of the local towns. Watch them prepare for their daily baking and you will also have the opportunity to taste something they would have baked a little earlier.

Our next stop are the magnificent Ggantija temples, meaning 'Giant Temples'. These temple also enjoy UNESCO satus and considered to be amongst the oldest free standing megalithic monuments in the world dating, back over 5500 years. The adjoining visitor's centre boasts artefacts from the temple site and also from the nearby underground temple site of the Xaghra Circle (4100BC), studies of samples and results from which are still emerging.

A scenic drive will pass through quaint sleepy villages that characterise Gozo's unique charm. The drive also highlights the north coast including a stop at the Calypso Cave belvedere, this viewing point offers breathtaking views over the red sands of Ramla Bay and the lush fertile valley which leads down to it. This panoramic coastal driver drive takes us to Xwejni bay with its salt pans and the natural feature of Qolla l-Bajda.

We continue on to one of the most photographed sites on Gozo, Dwejra. This is a site of ecological and geological importance, which includes the Blue Hole, The General's Rock and Inland Sea.

We then go to the pretty seasode village of Xlendi. The picturesque bay has a small sandy beach and restaurantsilining the waterfront. Here you will have some free time for a lunch break.

After lunch we will visit, Victoria the capital of Gozo. The main attraction is the 'The Citadel', a small fortified town which dominates the heights above the island capital. This site has been inhabited since the Bronze Age period. Walking through this historical gem one can admire the medieval layout with interesting features and some excellent examples of domestic medieval architecture, blending with buildings of the Knights of St John. Once at the top, a stunning panorama of the whole island and even Malta's northern coast enfolds.

We make our back to Victoria and drive down to the port for the ferry back to Valletta.

Blue Lagoon Malta: Boat Trips & 10+ Tips Before You Go

The Blue Lagoon Malta is an azure-coloured bay with crystal clear water on the small island of Comino. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Maltese islands and gets crowded at the height of summer.

I’m a tourist-turned-local and I help thousands of people plan their trip to Malta every year.

In this guide, I’ll help you with the following:

Where is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is located on the West coast of Comino Island, the smallest of Malta’s islands. It’s between the main island of Malta and Gozo and is easy to reach by boat from various locations.

Since there are currently no accommodation options on the small island of Comino , you’ll need to hop on a boat or the Comino ferry to get to the Blue Lagoon.

Only two people live on this tiny island, so there are few facilities and no paved roads. St. Mary’s Tower (referred to as Santa Marija Tower by the Maltese) and three surviving coastal batteries are among the few buildings built by the Knights of Malta to guard the channel between Malta and Gozo.

What’s the Blue Lagoon like to visit?

You may have read that Malta’s Blue Lagoon is a slice of paradise, and I can tell you that visually, that’s true: It’s a stunning location, not just in Malta but around the Mediterranean Sea.

However, because it’s such a beautiful place to visit, it’s not the most idyllic place, especially in the summer.

The hugely popular Blue Lagoon is easily Malta’s worth-kept secret. Its crystal clear waters attract an estimated 8,000-10,000 tourists daily at the busiest time of year (July/August).

With only a tiny sandy beach and a relatively small bay, that means it gets crowded .

Having said that, most visitors to the Maltese islands enjoy visiting the Blue Lagoon, and there are a few ways to have an enjoyable experience if you decide to visit.

How much time should I spend at the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon features prominently in my Malta itinerary guides, but while some choose to spend a full day there on a boat trip, most people are happy with spending a few hours or half a day.

The most common reason is that there are quieter beaches to spend a full day on.

What’s the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon?

The best time of year to visit the Blue Lagoon is May or June (usually the start of the swimming season). September and October can also be a great time to go, but weather conditions can be a little unpredictable at this time of year. (However, most tour operators offer free cancellation if you need to change plans.)

July and August are by far the busiest months – the height of the summer season in Malta.

The best time of day in summer is either before 10 am or after 4 pm to avoid most of the crowds.

Visiting the Blue Lagoon Malta, in winter

You can visit the Blue Lagoon in winter (November through March) as well. Although the water temperature drops to around 16 degrees Celsius and the sea will be too cold for swimming, visiting at this time of year makes for a much more peaceful experience.

Even if you’re brave enough to enter the sea, I’d advise you to avoid swimming during the winter season, no matter how inviting the crystal clear waters are. Treacherous undercurrents are quite common in winter.

How to get there and cost

The most popular ways of getting to the Blue Lagoon Malta are:

• Hop onto a ferry (€15 round trip for adults from Malta), or
• Book a boat trip (which starts at €25 per person). See my recommendations for both group and private boat trips further down.

My advice on which option to go for:

• If you want to wander around the island of Comino, taking the ferry is the most flexible option
• If you want to swim at the Blue Lagoon, go for a boat tour. It’s a far more comfortable experience. You don’t have to worry about finding a spot on the shore, where to leave your stuff, whether the public toilets are “safe” or not, etc. The shore is also too crowded for families with children in summer. If you can afford it, book a private boat trip.

Ferries from Malta to the Blue Lagoon

Comino ferries depart from Marfa and Ċirkewwa. Both seaside locations are located close to each other in the northernmost part of Malta.

Trips take around 15 minutes, and the ferry drops you off right at Blue Lagoon Bay.

You can get to both locations from other parts of Malta (Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, Buġibba/St. Paul’s Bay/Qawra, Mellieħa, etc.) by public transport (bus), though it can be quite a lengthy trip. For example, a bus ride to Marfa/Ċirkewwa from Valletta can take 1.5 hours, depending on traffic congestion.

Alternatively, you can get an Uber for around €30-40 (from Valletta, for example) depending on demand, and you may get there in around 45-50 minutes.

From Gozo to the Blue Lagoon

Ferries from Gozo to the Blue Lagoon depart from Mġarr Harbour, right opposite as you exist the Gozo ferry terminal building and the operators here are:

• Bella Comino Ferries

Mġarr Harbour is easy to reach by bus from Victoria (and through Victoria from other places in Gozo). Getting an Uber will be cheaper than in Malta, although limited availability means you may need to wait a little while to be picked up.

Blue Lagoon Malta Boat Trips – My Picks

Taking a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon is by far the most popular and comfortable option.

• Boat trips depart from Buġibba and Sliema. Some operators offer transportation from your place of stay at an additional fee, but using Uber/Bolt is usually easier and cheaper.
• Private boat trips also depart from Marfa and Ċirkewwa.

I’ve personally tried various options over the past years, and these are my top recommendations to you.

Catamaran (standard)

• Small groups, families with kids

Hop on this catamaran with slides for a fun day out with the family.

Rough schedule:

• 4h at the Blue Lagoon
• 1h at the Crystal Lagoon
• Comino caves and return.

Catamaran (Sunset boat trip)

Recommended: Enjoy the Blue Lagoon at a quieter day, with an early evening swim and a stunning sunset.

• 2h at the Blue Lagoon
• 30 mins at the Crystal Lagoon

Beaches and Bays tour

• Couples, small groups

My personal favourite: This more spacious, quieter catamaran takes you to the Blue Lagoon and one or two other bays on the West coast of Malta. Top choice!

The BBQ add-on is worth the money.

Catamaran Comino Cruise

An excellent choice if you’re staying in Sliema and you want an all-inclusive boat trip to the Blue Lagoon.

This large catamaran  takes you to the Blue Lagoon and other places around Comino. Includes a cold buffet lunch and open bar (wine, beer, soft drinks, water). Good value!

Private Blue Lagoon boat trips

Taking a private boat trip is by far the best way to visit the Blue Lagoon. You get a much more peaceful experience with a boat to yourself and a captain who will take you around. You also have the flexibility to explore other beaches and bays around, and you can pick a preferred start time and duration.

These are a few of the most popular trips from the best (tried-and-tested) operator that specialises in private tours. They offer more flexible options, and I highly recommend considering this option if you want the best experience.

Private Blue Lagoon Sunset tour - Half-day

• Marfa (Malta) or Mġarr Harbour (Gozo)

This is the most popular option for private boat tours during the day, giving you good time and flexibility for visiting the Blue Lagoon and the island of Comino.

Price is for up to 6 people, but boat has capacity for more (on request).

This option is similar to the first, but the key difference is the timing: You’ll be enjoying the Blue Lagoon at a much quieter part of the day, approaching sunset. Highly recommended!

Full Day Gozo, Comino and the Blue Lagoon

Blue lagoon and gozo combo tours.

Gozo tour specialist Yippee organises Blue Lagoon and Gozo combo tours and day trips in the summer season (15th May – 15th October). That way, you can combine a swim stop at the Blue Lagoon with a tour of Gozo (- also highly recommended).

They take care of your full day trip (transfers to/from Malta are included) and get rave reviews consistently.

• Couples, small groups, adventure-seekers

The Sunset Tour on Quad bikes offers you the option of taking a tour on self-drive (+1 passenger) quad bikes to more rugged places around Gozo. Encounters with sharks in the Blue Lagoon in Malta are extremely rare, making it a safe destination for swimmers and snorkellers. There are various shark species around the Maltese islands, but interactions with humans are uncommon because of the shallow waters and busy nature of the Blue Lagoon. Around Malta, only a few shark attacks have been recorded since 1890, and that’s not surprising: Sharks typically inhabit deeper waters away from coastal areas with a lot of human activity.

• It’s the #1 reason why people flock to Comino Island, Malta’s third-largest island, which is a mostly rural landscape with just three permanent residents. The island’s name is derived from the Maltese word kemmun or cumin in English, a herb commonly found on the island.

Tips: Good to know

• Even if you decide to go on a day trip by boat, it pays to be on board early to get a good seat. With the huge popularity of its destination, these trips tend to be sold out to capacity on most days during the peak season.
• If you’re on a short holiday, you haven’t visited Gozo yet, and you have to choose between whether to go there or Comino Island and its Blue Lagoon, Gozo is the better choice to go sightseeing for most travellers. Alternatively, take a boat trip which combines the two destinations (as mentioned earlier).
• If you’re heading there for the day and worried about the kids getting bored, you can opt to get a speedboat tour around the island and its main sights as well. You can usually find the operator near the main jetty. Just make sure you know the return time for either the boat tour you’re with or the ferry.
• Waste and waste management: There are rubbish bins around the shore, so please discard your waste appropriately or bring a small disposable bag with you. Litter left behind is a big challenge, so please help us protect and preserve one of Malta’s few natural reserves and keep the area clean for other visitors.

Tips: What to bring with you

• Drinks and food can usually be bought from nearby beach kiosks (food trucks) or on most tour boats. If you’re spending the day, bringing a large bottle of water with you can be wise, particularly in summer.
• If you decide not to take a boat trip there in the high season: Shade is hard to come by, so always bring sun protection with you if you plan to go during the day. While tanning can be enjoyable, don’t underestimate just how hot it gets, and sun exposure in Malta during the day in summer (11+ UV index levels are common) is dangerous.
• If you have snorkelling gear, definitely get it with you. The Blue Lagoon and its surroundings are great for snorkelling. You can rent gear for the day with some boat tour operators, but it’s best to check that with your operator of choice beforehand.
• If you plan to wander around a bit while on Comino Island, be sure to wear sturdy shoes. There aren’t any paved roads around the island, so the surface is pretty rocky/sandy, and you’ll need them to be comfortable. Going on a little hike is a great idea (also because of the small island’s size – it’s hard to get lost) but avoid long walks in the hot summer heat in the middle of the day.
• If you plan on finding a spot on the water’s edge for the day, bring at least a thick towel to sit on or maybe a small inflatable cushion.
