The 7 best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones

Gene Sloan

Call it the Battle of the Waterslides.

In the last few years, the big boys of the cruise industry — Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line — have been locked in a game of one-upmanship when it comes to waterslides and watery fun zones on vessels.

In addition to such over-the-top new attractions as go-kart tracks and roller coasters , the brands behind the biggest megaresorts at sea have been packing the top decks of their vessels with even more over-the-top watery allures.

Royal Caribbean, for instance, just loaded its newest ship, Icon of the Seas , with a record six waterslides that are part of a massive waterpark area called Category 6. They're among dozens of new waterslides the line has added to its ships in recent years.

As recently as early 2016, Royal Caribbean didn't have a single waterslide on any of its vessels.

MSC Cruises also has gone big with giant water parks in the past eight years, with as many as four waterslides on more than half a dozen of its newest vessels. Norwegian has loaded up its most recent ships with giant water parks, too — some have as many as five waterslides.

Not to be outdone, Carnival, an early adopter of waterslides on ships, has added sprawling water park areas with multiple waterslides to almost every vessel in its fleet.

A brief history of water attractions at sea

In the beginning, there was the pool. As watery cruise ship attractions go, it has long been the staple — something found on nearly every cruise vessel going back to the 1970s.

But as early as 1978, at least one line was spicing up its lido decks with a little waterslide fun — little being the operative word. That's the year Carnival added a single slide into the pool on its 728-passenger Festivale — a slide so small it's now hilarious to think it was touted as an attraction.

Often cited as the first waterslide ever on a cruise vessel, the Festivale slide was of a sort that was found at backyard pools at the time. The cruise industry was still in its infancy, of course, and ships were orders of magnitude smaller than they are today. Festivale measured just 32,697 tons, about one-eighth the size of today's biggest cruise vessels.

Carnival, the so-called Fun Ship line, would go on to become the early leader in waterslides at sea. The 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, which debuted in 1990, was the first cruise ship with a significant waterslide. It measured 115 feet in length.

Just six years later, in 1996, Carnival would make news with the unveiling of a 214-foot-long corkscrew waterslide on what then was called Destiny. (The ship currently sails as the Carnival Sunshine after being rebuilt in 2013.) At the time, Destiny was the biggest cruise ship in the world.

In more recent years, Carnival has gone into waterslide-building overdrive. The line has added full-blown water park areas with waterslides, watery play zones and other features to nearly all of its 27 ships. All but one of Carnival's ships (Carnival Luminosa) now have at least one waterslide.

One of the Carnival water parks, on the line's 6-year-old Carnival Horizon, even has Disney-style theming revolving around Dr. Seuss characters.

Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean only began going big with waterslides on ships in the past decade or so. Many of the newest vessels from the brands have massive water park areas. Some of the brands are retrofitting big waterslides onto older ships, too.

Additionally, the family-focused Disney Cruise Line now has major water attractions on all its vessels.

Which cruise ships have the biggest waterslides?

If your idea of the perfect cruise ship is one loaded to the gills with waterslides and watery fun zones (plus all sorts of other over-the-top attractions), you'll want to stick to the biggest floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Carnival.

At Royal Caribbean, that means the giant Icon Class and Oasis Class vessels, which account for the world's six largest cruise ships. At Norwegian, you'll find the biggest waterslides and water parks on the line's relatively recently built Breakaway Plus, Breakaway and Epic Class ships. At MSC Cruises, the new Seaside, Meraviglia, Meraviglia Plus and World Class vessels have the line's big water parks.

Big lines that have steered clear of the water-park-at-sea trend include Princess Cruises, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises . Geared more toward couples than families and typically drawing an older demographic, all three of these lines have stuck to a more subdued feel for the outdoor areas of their ships. The top decks of vessels operated by Princess, Holland America and Celebrity still mostly revolve around traditional swimming areas with pools, hot tubs and lounge chairs.

Ready for a splashy, top-deck thrill? These are the most spectacular watery attractions at sea.

Where you'll find it: Icon of the Seas

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

When it comes to water parks at sea, nothing compares to Category 6 on Icon of the Seas . Unveiled in January when the vessel debuted, it's loaded with a record-breaking six waterslides that span across five decks.

They're not small waterslides, either. Every single one of the six waterslides either sets a size record for its type of waterslide on a ship or is something that's never been done before on a ship.

The biggest among them, called Frightening Bolt, is the tallest drop slide at sea. Another of the six slides, called Pressure Drop, is the first open free-fall slide at sea.

The Category 6 water park is also home to Storm-Chasers, dual waterslides that are the longest mat racing slides at sea; Hurricane Hunters, the first family raft slide at sea; and Storm Surge, the first suspended family raft slide at sea.

The Perfect Storm

Where you'll find it: Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

This isn't just one giant waterslide; it's a whole complex of waterslides, each one among the most exciting you'll find anywhere on the world's oceans.

The Perfect Storm is on four of Royal Caribbean's massive Oasis Class vessels — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas — as well as a bunch of Royal Caribbean's smaller vessels. On many of the ships, the complex includes two four-deck-high racer slides called Cyclone and Typhoon, where you can do side-by-side speed tests with your travel partner.

On the four Oasis Class ships, there's also a third, Champagne bowl-style slide called Supercell. It'll swirl you around a big basin before plummeting you "down the drain" into a plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, a third slide called The Tidal Wave sends you screaming down a steep hill on an inner tube to a nearly vertical incline. Zooming upward, topping out and dropping back, you'll get a blissful moment of complete weightlessness.

Note that Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide area called Perfect Storm — but it's completely different. More on that in a moment.

The Blaster

Where you'll find it: Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

The Blaster is the Big Daddy of waterslides at sea. At 800 feet, it's the longest ever built on a cruise ship. Added to Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas in 2019, it's a seemingly endless stretch of yellow and orange tubing that winds around the back deck of the vessel like a snake.

A true sight to behold, The Blaster is so long because it's what's known as a water coaster. It features water jets that propel you up, down and forward — extending the ride — as you careen around the ship's basketball court and surfing simulator in an inner tube. At times, you go flying over the side of the ship, over open water (not that you have much time to take in the view).

Royal Caribbean has named the area on Navigator of the Seas where The Blaster is located the Perfect Storm — the same name used for waterslide areas on six other ships — but the area is completely different from what you'll find on the other vessels. In addition to The Blaster, the Perfect Storm area on Navigator of the Seas includes a headfirst mat racer slide called Riptide — the first of its kind at sea.

Where you'll find it: Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

Leave it to the family-focused Disney Cruise Line to come up with the coolest watery family attraction at sea. AquaDuck is a water coaster, like The Blaster on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, and is found on Disney's two Dream Class ships. But don't expect anything too white-knuckle. The ride is relatively gentle by water park standards, mainly because it's designed for kids of all ages (and their parents, who can ride along on inner tubes for two).

While AquaDuck is slightly shorter than The Blaster at 765 feet in length, it has a bigger presence, thanks to its prime location encircling the main pool area. If you're lounging up top, it's hard to miss the massive, clear acrylic tubing of the ride, which is held up by 46 giant white stilts.

In addition to AquaDuck, the two Disney ships with the attraction (Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream ) have a relatively small, kid-friendly waterslide next to the centrally located Mickey's Pool. Dubbed Mickey's Slide, it's held up by a giant Mickey hand, which is delightful. Both ships also have a watery play zone for toddlers called Nemo's Reef. Plus, Disney Fantasy has a watery fun zone with water jets, geysers and bubblers called AquaLab.

Note that Disney's newest ship — Disney Wish — has a water coaster attraction similar to the AquaDuck called the AquaMouse. The big difference is that riders will see animated shorts while riding up the ramp at the start of the ride.

Where you'll find it: Nearly all Carnival ships

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

When it comes to waterslides on ships, cruise giant Carnival is still the undisputed king. The Fun Ship line began adding them to vessels way back in 1978, and there's now at least one waterslide on nearly every ship in the Carnival fleet — something no other line can say.

Indeed, on nearly all Carnival ships, there's now not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Called WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel, but they typically have one or two big waterslides, a watery play zone with interactive water features and a large continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range.

You'll typically find the biggest Carnival water park complexes on the newest Carnival ships, such as Mardi Gras , Celebration , Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Venezia . All four have three waterslides — one more than most Carnival ships.

Aqua Park (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Where you'll find it: Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

Norwegian Cruise Line began going big with waterslides in 2010 when it debuted Norwegian Epic. And boy, did it go big. Norwegian Epic offers three monster waterslides, including the thrilling Epic Plunge — a 200-foot-long tube ride that ends in a swirling bowl. Epic Plunge is part of Norwegian Epic's Aqua Park, the first water park on a Norwegian ship. Norwegian has since added Aqua Parks to six more new vessels, including its biggest ship, the 5-year-old Norwegian Encore .

Norwegian's Aqua Parks vary in size and attractions from ship to ship, but some of them, such as the one on Norwegian Breakaway, have as many as five separate multistory waterslides. Yes, you read that right: five waterslides on a single cruise ship!

On Norwegian Breakaway, the lineup includes twin free-fall slides that drop passengers nearly straight down several stories, two side-by-side twisting racer slides and a family-friendly slide with a more modest drop. For sheer variety, the complex is hard to beat.

Aqua Park (MSC Cruises)

Where you'll find it: MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Euribia, MSC World Europa

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

Fast-growing MSC Cruises has joined the waterslide wars in the last few years — and in a massive way. Each of the 10 ships the line has unveiled since 2017 offers a full-blown water park on its top deck that's packed with waterslides and other watery fun.

On North America-based MSC Seaside, the Aqua Park has four waterslides and a children's play area with interactive water features. The waterslides include two massive, 525-foot-long dueling slides that extend over the sides of the ship. The top of the Aqua Park on MSC Seaside is also home to the liftoff point for a zip line that soars 344 feet across the top of the vessel.

Other MSC Cruises water parks at sea include the winter-themed Polar Aqua Park on MSC Meraviglia, which offers a suspended-in-the-sky ropes course in addition to four waterslides. There's also the Aquaplay area for the little ones.

Two MSC Cruises ships — MSC Seashore and MSC World Europa — even have virtual reality waterslides that involve riders wearing virtual reality headsets as part of the experience.

In all, 14 of MSC Cruises' 22 vessels now have at least one waterslide on their top decks.

10 Top Cruise Ships With Water Slides

Waterslides on cruise vessels have become an intrinsic part of a holiday at sea, offering exciting and memorable experiences to passengers of all ages. In the past few years, cruise lines have added many attractions to their ships, making them giant sailing cities with shopping areas, game zones, golf and race courses, operas, theatres, full-fledged water parks, and much more.

Water Parks on cruise ships provide a break from conventional activities by adding adventure and thrill to the cruising experience.

The colourful spiral slides that meander around the cruise ship’s deck in several shapes and sizes also give stunning ocean views through their translucent sections. Some slides have unique features, making them true engineering marvels.

However, when did the first slide on a cruise ship come up?

In the 1970s, when the cruise ship industry was still in its infancy, these vessels had a swimming pool, which was still considered a big thing at that time, given that cruise ships were relatively smaller.

However, by the 1980s, Carnival decided to add a single water slide to its 35,000 gross tonne Festivale, capable of accommodating at least 728 guests. This is often said to be the first water slide ever added to a cruise ship. This water slide was like the one found on backyard pools, but it made Carnival an early leader in incorporating water slides in cruise ships.

In 1990, Carnival Fantasy debuted and became the first cruise ship with a proper slide measuring 115 ft. Six years later, in 1996, Carnival made headlines when it unveiled a 214-foot long corkscrew waterslide on the Destiny, now called the Carnival Sunshine, which was at that time, the biggest cruise ship in the world

Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean began adding waterslides on their ships in the past decade. Many new ships of these lines now have massive waterparks. Disney Cruise Line does have water parks however they are not as crazy since Disney focusses on a family experience, hence has many attractions for kids.

This article will take you through 10 top cruise ships with water slides. So make sure you add these cruise ships to your list to enjoy watery adventures on your next cruise vacation.

1. Perfect Storm Waterslide on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas has more than one giant slide. Instead, it has a whole complex with 2 four-deck high slides, named Typhoon and Cyclone, part of the Perfect Storm. These two boldest waterslides at sea, placed side by side, allow one to have a water-slide race with your partner, friend or family member.

Perfect Storm Waterslide on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas

The slides have some translucent sections offering beautiful sea views, too. The Perfect Storm is on three of the cruise line’s Oasis Class Ships apart from the Wonder of the Seas. It is found on Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas.

It is important to note that the Royal Carribean’s Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide complex called the Perfect Storm, but it is entirely different from the one on Wonder of the Seas.

2. The Blaster On Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas

The Perfect Storm complex on Navigator of the Seas is different from the ones found on other ships of the cruise line.

It features the Blaster, the longest aqua coaster ever built on a cruise ship. At 800 ft, this feels like an endless stretch of the yellow-orange tube that curls around the back deck of the cruise ship.

The Blaster On Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas

It is one of the most famous attractions of the Navigator of the Seas. Blaster has a hydraulic system with 5 water jets propelling you and your partner up, down and forward on the ship. Sometimes, one flies over the ship’s side into the open water onboard.

Apart from the Blaster, there is also a headfirst mat racer slide, the Riptide, one of its kind ever built on a cruise ship.

Navigator of the Seas was upgraded in 2019 with €115 million. It was then that water slides, laser tags and an escape room were added to keep it up-to-date and desirable for passengers who love water slides.

3. WaterWorks On Carnival’s Mardi Gras

There is at least one waterslide on each cruise ship of Carnival, something other cruise lines cannot boast about. All Carnival cruises have a water park area, the WaterWorks. However, it differs in size and features from vessel to vessel.

This water park area onboard Mardi Gras comprises 3 massive spiralling water slides, a big dumping bucket that soaks everyone with a splash, twin racing slides and several interactive water features.

WaterWorks On Carnival’s Mardi Gras

Blue Lightning is known for its high-speed turns and twists; meanwhile, Orange Thunder propels you into the water. The Twister slide is another famous slide among water enthusiasts.

The biggest water park areas or complexes onboard Carnival Cruise Ships are found on the newest additions, such as the Celebration, Carnival Venezia and the Mardi Gras. These ships have 3 waterslides, 1 more than most cruise ships of the line.

4. Aqua Park on Norwegian Encore

The largest ship in the fleet of Norwegian Cruise Line is the Norwegian Encore, 1094 ft long with a Gross Register Tonnage of 169,116.

This behemoth has 2 multistory water slides, the Aqua Racer, racing slides and the Ocean Loops Slide that stretches out to the ship’s side.

Aqua Park on Norwegian Encore

The Aqua Park has small water slides for kids too, along with a splash area with buckets that drench those who stand below them. One can also enjoy a water fight using the water cannons available at the park.

Norwegian Cruise Line added massive waterslides on its ships in 2010 with Norwegian Epic. It has 3 monster waterslides and an Epic Plunge, a 200-foot-long ride ending in a swirling bowl.

Epic Plunge is a part of Norwegian Epic’s Aqua Park, which was the first water park on a Norwegian cruise ship. Since then, the line has added Aqua Parks to 6 more new ships, including the biggest ship, Norwegian Encore.

Another ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, has twin free-fall water slides that drop you down many stories, 2 twisting racer slides, and a family slide with a modest drop.

5. AquaMouse on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish

The newest ship of the Disney Cruise line is Disney Wish, which has a water coaster called the AquaMouse.

It is different from other ships of the line as riders can see animated shorts of Disney movies and Mickey Mouse clips as they ride up the ramp at the start of the ride.

AquaMouse on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish

Riders experience show scenes, lighting, and special sound effects while having a fun-filled ride around and off the ship through the 760-foot twisting tubes.

The Disney Wish also has 10 pools apart from a Toy Story Splash Zone, with huge rubber toys and the Slide-a-saurus Rex family slide.

The family-focused Disney Cruise Line has one of the coolest water slides and attractions. Their ships have a water coaster called AquaDuck, similar to the Blaster on Royal Caribbean Ships.

The water ride is relatively gentle by the standards of water parks since it is designed for kids and their parents who can ride along.

Although the AquaDuck is shorter than the Balster at 765 ft, it is nothing less, given its location surrounding the main pool area on the Disney ships.

Apart from the AquaDuck, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have small, kids-friendly waterslides close to the Mickey pool, called Mickey’s Slide.

These two ships also have a water play zone for toddlers called the Nemo’s Reef. Disney Fantasy also has a water zone with geysers, water jets and bubblers called AquaLab.

6. Aqua Park On the MSC Europa

MSC Cruises’ ships also boast water slides, and all the cruise ships unveiled by the cruise line after 2017 have a water park area, usually on the top deck, where all the watery fun begins.

MSC Europa’s Aqua Park has four criss-cross water slides above the deck, along with the use of virtual technology that makes the ride interesting and an interactive experience. There is also a dedicated pool for toddlers.

Aqua Park On the MSC Europa

MSC Seaside’s Aqua Park has 4 slides and a children’s play area. However, these waterslides are massive, two being 25-foot-long slides that stretch over the ship’s sides.

MSC Meraviglia has a winter-themed Polar Aqua Park and an Aquaplay area for the kids. About 14 of MSC Cruises’ 22 Ships have at least one waterslide on their top decks.

7. Twister Waterslide on Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista is said to be one of the most fun ships to be on, with many exciting things to do, attractions to visit and nightlife that doesn’t seem to end.

The highlight of Carnival Vista’s WaterWorks has to be the Twister Waterslide, which is the equivalent of hundreds of feet of spirals that start high and get you down with one of the fastest and wettest water rides ever designed on a cruise ship.

Twister Waterslide on Carnival Vista

Gallons of water rush through the slide so one is not dry, and by the time one reaches the end of the twists and turns, there is another big splash awaiting you. The ride is open to all; however, height and weight restrictions are applicable.

Then comes the DrainPipe, which ends with a major swirl while the PowerDrencher soaks you completely from above.

8. Supercell on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas welcomes over 4,000 guests on its 16 decks packed with full-on entertainment, delicious dining options and so on. The ship has 7 differently themed neighbourhoods, like the revolutionary Boardwalk and Central Park space.

Harmony of the Seas sails in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, making it perfect for family holidays, couple trips and even a solo adventure.

Supercell on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas

This action-packed cruise ship is particularly famous for its impressive waterslides. Young guests can enjoy Splashaway Bay, while adults can check out some really exhilarating waterslides.

The twin slides, Typhoon and Cyclone, are fun to race on with your partner. They have stretches of a see-through tunnel, making it even more fun. Another slide is called the Supercell, which has several loops, turns and twists. This ride is surely not for the faint of heart.

9. Dr Seuss WaterWorks On Carnival Horizon

Carnival Horizon is the 26th ship of the Carnival Fleet and the 2nd cruise ship of the line’s Vista Class. She has a 133,596 gross tonnage that can accommodate almost 4000 passengers and 1450 crew members.

This bold and beautiful ship is loaded with fun activities, perfect for families since it has a lot of kids clubs and dining places with reduced prices for children under 12.

Dr Seuss WaterWorks On Carnival Horizon

The cruise does not disappoint adults since it has the 2-screen Carnival Multiplex that combines one theatre with IMAX action and the other with stunning 3D visuals.

Not to forget that the ship has a Dr Seuss WaterWorks, for all those who love the waterpark fun. There is the Twister Waterslide, racing slides, the DrainPipe and the ultimate PowerDrencher.

The ship also has a SkyRide, the Punchliner Comedy Club and Playlist Productions, two of the top onboard entertainment options.

10. AquaDunk On Disney Magic

Disney Magic, like all other Disney cruise ships is known for its fun disney rides. It has the Twist ‘n’ Spout and the Aquadunk. The former is a relaxing, and a children-friendly waterslide, the latter is a thrilling ride extending over the ship’s side.

The AquaDunk begins with a steep drop before it goes into a clear tube shooting out of the ship. This ride was added to the Disney Magic when it was being renovated in 2013, making it the only ship with an AquaDunk.

AquaDunk On Disney Magic

While one climbs the stairs to the top, there are storyboards about how the AquaDunk came into being. It was Donald’s nephews Louie, Dewey and Huey who created its design.

Then Donald tested many prototypes before finally selecting the current design the guests experience on the Disney Dream.

The AquaDunk is positioned on Deck 13 and after you climb to the top, you enter a clear capsule where you stand with arms crossed and count to the point when the bottom platform opens, dropping you into the slide. The ride is 212 feet or 3 stories.

It is a single rider waterslide with no tube or float to ride in. Guests must be 48 inches to experience this slide.

The best cruise ship water parks and slides

by - 26 Mar 2019

Norwegian Breakaway - The Whip slide

Splashing around in a water park is one of the best ways to keep kids of all ages entertained during your cruise holiday, particularly on sea days. Cruise ship water parks are incredibly popular, so much so that almost every new family-focused cruise ship has one. With features such as swimming pools, splash areas, water slides, fountains and spray jets, there’s so much to keep kids of all ages busy.

Some family cruise lines are better for water parks than others, while some might not even have one at all. So, if a great water park is a must, you’ll need to consider exactly what’s on board each ship.

Some waterparks focus on fast thrill slides – perfect for teens. Whilst others have amazing splash areas – ideal for toddlers. Splash zones are great because children in swimming nappies aren’t allowed in any pool or hot tub on any cruise ship for hygiene reasons. So, a toddler splash zone is an ideal way for little ones to cool off on a hot day. Read on to find out more about the best cruise ship water parks and slides.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Aqua Park & Kids Aqua Park

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway

On Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Class ships, you’ll find no fewer than five multi-storey waterslides. The Free Fall slide is the fastest and one of the most exhilarating slides at sea. Stand inside the capsule and wait until the floor drops away leaving you hurtling downwards at the speed of four Gs.

Norwegian Escape - Free Fall slide

Then there’s The Whip, two side-by-side twisting racing slides. For younger guests or those who prefer a more relaxing ride, the family fun slide is ideal.

Norwegian Breakaway - The Whip slide

Norwegian Epic

Norwegian Epic has a water park featuring a slide you’ll never forget! The Epic Plunge begins four stories above the pool deck and features a 200-feet long flume which you can choose to ride with or without a tube. At the end of the slide is a huge bowl which you’ll swirl round and round before exiting at the bottom.

Norwegian Epic - Epic Plunge

MSC Cruises’ Aqua Park

MSC Aquapark

MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima

MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia class ships feature three water slides – two with tubes which twist and turn through mostly darkness, and one which looks like a wide-brimmed champagne glass where riders swirl round and round.

MSC Meraviglia - Waterslides

There’s also a polar-themed water park for youngsters, with large sculptures of polar bears and whales as well as spray guns, water dunkers and a small slide.

MSC Meraviglia - Polar Aquapark

MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview

Almost-identical twin ships MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview take cruise ship slides to the next level with the Slideboard. The Slideboard is more than just a water slide, it’s also an interactive game, dropping two decks, this duo of slides twists and turns with flashing lights and music.

Riders sit on ‘slideboards’, which have buttons on them to press in time to the flashing lights to score points. A leader board at the exit keeps track of each rider’s score. As if that wasn’t enough, there are a further two fast racing slides with clear sections over the side of the ship and an open spiral slide.

MSC Seaside

Younger cruisers will love the Forest Aquaventure Park. Located inside the ship’s funnel surround it has a good amount of shade from the sun and features a shallow pool, fountains, spray nozzles, mini slides and a giant water bucket.

MSC Preziosa

MSC Preziosa boasts the Vertigo slide, a 120-metre-long tube slide which includes a transparent section which goes over the side of the ship. This is a fast one, with guests travelling at over 6 metres per second. You’ll also find a great kids waterpark on the deck below, with tipping buckets, climbing areas and small slides for little ones.

Minimum height and weight requirements for MSC Cruises:

  • All slides: 102 cm and seven years old

Royal Caribbean’s slides, H2O Zone and Splashaway Bay

Which ships to choose: Liberty of the Seas , Adventure of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Independence of the Seas , Mariner of the Seas , Navigator of the Seas .

Whilst Royal Caribbean isn’t known for its water slides, they still feature on several ships, and the splash areas are well-designed and loved by younger cruisers.

RCI Liberty

Perfect Storm

The Perfect Storm is a group of three water slides which are found on-board Liberty of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas, although it’s not the same three slides on each ship.

RCI Perfect Storm

Two of the three slides are the Cyclone and Typhoon – twisting racer slides. The third slide varies by ship (except Adventure of the Seas which doesn’t have the third slide). On Harmony of the Seas it’s the Supercell which has a circular bowl at the bottom which riders swirl around in before sliding down one final length into the plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, the third slide is the Tidal Wave – a boomerang-style slide which uses inflatable rafts.

On Allure of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas you’ll find the H20 Zone which is perfect for babies and toddlers. Here you’ll find various pools, water cannons and fountains for splashing around.

H20 WaterPark

Splashaway Bay

Adventure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas have Splashaway Bay, which has all the features of the H2O zone, plus a few kids’ water slides and a giant tipping bucket.

RCI Harmony Splash-away Bay

Other activities

Although it’s not a water slide, the Ultimate Abyss on-board Harmony of the Seas deserves a mention. This is a huge slide which zooms riders down ten decks from the back of the ship. Many Royal Caribbean ships also feature the FlowRider surfing simulator which is very popular with teenagers.

RCI Abyss

Minimum height and weight requirements for Royal Caribbean slides:

  • Tidal Wave: 132cm and 45kg

Carnival Waterworks

The Twister Waterslide is one of the fastest you’ll find at sea, or indeed on land. Speedway Splash, meanwhile, is a racing slide featuring awesome lighting effects. Then there’s the DrainPipe, which swirls riders round in circles at the end. There’s no better way to cool off on a hot day than with the PowerDrencher – a huge bucket of water which tips down from above.

So there you have our guide to the best cruise ship slides and water parks!

If your family would love to spend time in a water park on-board a cruise ship, the cruise lines to look out for will be Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line .

Aside from choosing a great ship, it’s also important to think carefully about your itinerary and the time of year that you’re cruising. Whilst it is possible to ride the slides in the Mediterranean in January, it’s going to be pretty cold so your kids aren’t likely to have more than a couple of goes. The slides are also likely to be closed for much of the day if the weather is anything less than warm. So plan carefully and you’re sure to have a holiday to remember.

I Went on the Sun Princess Cruise Ship in the Mediterranean, and Now It’s My Entire Personality

This is not my first cruise, but it might be my favorite.

Author image: about face matte fluid eye paint review chelsea candelario

Since 2018, I’ve been on eight cruise ships from four different lines (even embarking on two trips only a month apart from each other). See, cruising is no longer just for our Gen X parents or Boomer retirees. As a 30-year-old millennial, it has become the travel method to relax, party and discover new places in the most efficient way I can think of. I’ve been on popular cruise lines (i.e, Royal Caribbean , Carnival and Norwegian) before, but hopping aboard the Sun Princess was my first time sailing the Mediterranean…and let’s just say it’s become my entire personality—and I’m totally fine with it. Whether you’ve been on a Princess ship before or it’s your first time (like me), here’s my honest review on their latest ship.

The Sun Princess Cruise Ship

It’s been over a decade since the cruise line has introduced a new fleet class, and at 139 feet wide, 1,133 feet long and 200 feet high, the Sun Princess does not disappoint. Still, it’s smaller than a behemoth like the Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , so I never got overwhelmed or lost, and I was able to explore the entire ship in seven days with my best friend in tow. Taking inspiration from the sun, design elements of the ship includes expansive windows to bring it natural light and large deck areas to bring in more guests. Speaking of guests, the ship can house 4,300 passengers and 1,600 crew members, and has five pools (including one indoors) and nine hot tubs. All this to say, even though the Sun Princess paints itself as a family fun vessel, I see it more for adults. Yes, it does offer kids clubs and fun activities (like an obstacle course, splash zone and dry slides), but it’s a small offering compared to Royal Caribbean’s water slides, Carnival’s mini golf or Norwegian’s race track. I’m not saying don’t go with the kiddos, but I think it’s better suited for adults, couples or fun bestie getaways.

The Sun Princess Mediterranean Port Stops

I went on a six-day cruise , which stopped in Gibraltar, Marseille, Provence, Genoa and La Spezia. It was my first time on a Mediterranean cruise, so I made it my mission to get off the ship at every port. I’m accustomed to sandy beaches and Caribbean music, but these French and Italian cities were the complete opposite. You are mostly thrown in local neighborhoods, so it’s best to plan ahead if you want to explore beyond the port stops. I recommend booking a few excursions that provide a closer look into their breathtaking landscapes, delicious food and staple landmarks. I did one excursion: Pisa, Tuscan Countryside and Wine Tasting . It was a great way to venture out of the port area, sip some Tuscan wine and see the Leaning Tower of Pisa for the first time. (It’s way harder to do the standing pose than you think, folks.)

My Cabana Mini-Suite

My bestie and I stayed in a Cabana Mini-Suite , which includes a spacious bathroom, a full closet filled with cubbies for organizing clothes, two twin beds (that can be pushed together for a queen) and a large couch. The mini suite (a new upgrade from the line) has more private lounging space than I’ve seen before, including a very large balcony and well-furnished cabana with an additional outdoor furniture and TV (epic). My friend and I spent our time in each space, whether it was taking in the spectacular views, watching movies and pigging out on room service or phoning our families back in the States. It’s definitely a great amount of space for a traveling pair.

sun princess cruise ship honest review food and drinks

Dining Aboard the Sun Princess

The Sun Princess has over 30 dining and lounge spaces—and I tried most of them (there’s only so much I can eat and drink in a week). Now, all Princess ships typically have a sit-down dining option and a buffet, but Sun Princess takes it up a notch by offering three different complimentary dining floors. However, I highly recommend trying a specialty restaurant at least once. My favorite was The Butcher’s Block, a meat lover’s paradise created by famous butcher Dario Cecchinin, where you sit family style with other passengers as you taste everything from the pancia (beef belly) to costata alla fiorentina (bone-in ribeye). Another favorite was Love by Britto for a romantic date night…or celebrating a first friends trip (like I did). The decor, the food, the drinks and even the silverware were covered in hearts. Created by Romero Britto, it had some of the most delicious entrees and cocktails on the ship. (I’m still thinking about the wild mushroom soup, heart-shaped chocolate lava cake and the Strawberry Love Potion cocktail.) The restaurant is also located on the back of the ship, so you get a breathtaking view of the sea.

Sun Princess also offers a Royal Afternoon Tea, which includes a presentation from IRL staff and video from Darren McGrady, a former Royal chef of Queen Elizabeth. Guests can drink a tea of their choice, while snacking on sandwiches, scones and cakes. I appreciated learning the history of tea and tidbits about the royal family. (Fun fact: Queen Elizabeth wasn’t a huge fan of scones and often gave them to her Corgis.)  The Spellbound by Magic Castle brings magic and mixology together in a part speakeasy-dinner, part immersive magic show. Without giving every detail away, I'll say this: it was awesome.

sun princess cruise ship honest review activities

The Entertainment

I saw Art Beat at The Dome, a glass-enclosed venue with panoramic views of acrobats and floating set pieces. I also watched a pirate-inspired '80s musical:  Vallora: A Pirate Quest . The ship has your typical trivia, wellness amenities (like fitness center, spa and salon), casino and shops, but I was more interested in karaoke and dancing the night away in the central Piazza where there constantly buzzing (and blissful, like morning yoga) activities.

Final Thoughts

I’ve been on quite a few cruises, but this ship might be my favorite one yet. Whether I was trying out immersive dining or dancing my way through the Piazza, Sun Princess exceeded my expectations. It also had the nicest passengers and staff I’ve ever met. I will never forget this lasting advice from a 60-something cruiser, “When you get older, you stop caring about what people think of you. Start living and travel as much as you can.” Maybe I’ll start a bit early.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

nacho_gutierrez/Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

If the biggest luxury is convenience, Scenic is among the top cruise lines to pick. The Australian-based company features all-inclusive trips — no upgraded drinks package needed — on a 228-passenger, all-suite ship for an intimate experience. Guests can travel in six-star luxury with a personal butler assigned to each cabin. Turn to helicopters (and even a submersible) for a different view of a destination.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Escape: Spain & the French Riviera

This eight-day itinerary moves along the coast of Spain to the French Riviera. With stops in hallmark ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, and Monte Carlo, there's no need to worry about missing out on these popular destinations. Quiet, less-visited ports include Costa Brava's Roses and Villefranche-sur-Mer just outside of Nice. Take to the sky for an aerial view of Sanary-sur-Mer inside Scenic Eclipse 's private helicopter. On the island of Corsica, visit the historic citadel and old town, which Napoleon Bonaparte freed from Italian rule in 1791. This journey spans the bright lights of elegant cities to quiet, luxurious beaches, giving travelers the best of both.

Michel Verdure/Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn cruises are made for those who enjoy a touch of grandeur. The cruise line offers all-inclusive options, making it easy to relax on board and just enjoy the ride. A wide range of Mediterranean destinations and cruise lengths, from seven to 30 days, means everyone can find the right fit.

Trip to Try:  7-day Classic Greek Isles and Ephesus

The weeklong trip on the Seabourn Encore offers a glimpse of a few of Greece’s best islands. Departing from Athens, the journey stops in Patmos, Agios, Mykonos, and Skiathos. The itinerary sprinkles in a few Turkish delights, including Kusadasi and Bozcaada, before disembarking in Istanbul. Excursions include guided tours of historical sites like the Grotto of St. John in Patmos and wine tastings in Bozcaada.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Edgardo Contreras/Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Synonymous with luxury and comfort, The Ritz-Carlton's superyachts are an extension of the company's hotels. Each of the three boats can accommodate around 400 passengers with its smallest ship, Evrima , holding just 298 people. Fine dining abounds on board with five restaurants and six lounges to choose from. Guests can expect plush furnishings and modern design. Though all rooms are terrace suites, there are also two-story loft suites and owner's suites with spacious private terraces.

Trip to Try: Evrima Barcelona to Barcelona

Travelers will see the western Mediterranean on a six-night, round-trip voyage to Barcelona. After departing the lively Spanish city, settle into a suite and enjoy the yacht's amenities with a full day at sea. In Gibraltar, venture to Gorham's Cave, which dates to the days of Neanderthals. The ship returns to the Spanish coast with stops in Málaga (Picasso's hometown), Cartagena with its notable Roman ruins, and the picturesque island of Ibiza.

Viking Cruises

White Rain/Viking Cruises

Those looking for an adults-only option will find exactly what they need with Viking Cruises. Since the company's offerings are strictly for guests ages 18 and up, you can expect a mature cruising environment. With itineraries ranging from western Europe to holy lands on the eastern Mediterranean, finding a cruise that fits your travel desires is a snap. The cruise line offers free shore excursions, enabling guests to fully experience the ports.

Trip to Try:  Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn

Spend 22 days with Viking on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn. The trip takes guests to seven countries including Greece, Montenegro, and Monaco, with stops in both major and smaller ports. Enhance the journey by booking additional excursions tailored to specific interests such as architecture or cuisine. Book pre- and post-trip stays to further explore ports of call.

Explora Journeys

Launched by the Aponte family, the founders of shipping and cruise company MSC Group, Explora Journeys offers high-end vacations with uncompromising, livable cruise ship cabins, which are more like small apartments. With a maritime heritage in the region that stretches back to the 17th century, the family has carefully selected ports that reflect their own travels.

Trip to Try: A Journey to UNESCO Malta & Balearic Bliss

Spend 10 days sailing across the western Mediterranean aboard an all-suite ship designed with clean, simple lines. Bookended by Rome and Barcelona, this voyage includes stops at classic Italian destinations such as Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. But what sets it apart from other Mediterranean itineraries are stops in Malta, Tunisia, and Menorca. Sicily's best beaches, fortified walls, and whitewashed mosques are just a few of the varied landscapes guests will see. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the spacious suites, penthouses, ocean residences (up to 1,064 square feet), and multiroom owner's suites make cruising feel like home.

Azamara is a sumptuous option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The company also emphasizes hyperlocal experiences that allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, and culture at ports, if only for a day. There are a variety of destinations and trip lengths, including 10-, 12-, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

Trip to Try:   11-night Egypt/Israel Intensive Voyage

Make your way through four counties (Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this 11-night adventure. The voyage emphasizes the region’s dramatic history, highlighting destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors. Shore excursion options include exploring the famed Acropolis of Athens, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambience of Limassol, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus, for an entire day.

Emerald Cruises

Cultural experiences are central to Emerald Cruises. Whether you enjoy private performances from local musicians or active adventures like hiking to a city's fortified walls, guests aboard these sleek yachts will see the best of a destination. No need to worry about tipping, upgrading a drinks package, or purchasing standard excursions; the fare is all-inclusive. Onboard accommodations range from spacious, minimalist rooms with an ocean view to yacht suites featuring a private terrace with lounge chairs.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Enchantment

Journey from Athens, home of the Acropolis, to Croatia's renowned walled city, Dubrovnik, during this seven-night trip. Emerald notably does not skip over Albania, though there are plenty of stops along Greece's west coast and nearby islands. One of its coastal towns, Sarandë, features stunning lapis waters and serves as a gateway to UNESCO-recognized Butrint. Other notable tours include the ruins of Corfu and Kotor's walls.

Oceania Cruises

Holger Leue/Getty Images

Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. With a low guest-to-crew member ratio, your every need is easily met. Mediterranean sailings include seven-, 12-, 21-, and even 30-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this company, you’re almost spoiled with choices, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about this year’s trip — and next year's.

Trip to Try:   Monte Carlo to Athens

The 10-day trip takes travelers through affluent ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, this journey's shore excursions abound. There’s plenty to do on board too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.

Celebrity Cruises

Bernard Biger, Chantiers de l'Atlantique/Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from children to grandparents — should check out Celebrity Cruises and the 16 ships that make up its fleet . With ample options for everyone on board (think kids clubs to casinos), varied shore excursions, and affordable pricing, these trips are viable for larger groups.

Trip to Try:   Best of Italy and Croatia

The 11-night trip takes guests to 10 ports through Italy and Croatia, providing varied terrain and plentiful shore excursion options. Visit beautiful seaside towns like Portofino, explore the fortified walls of Dubrovnik, and enjoy the ship's amenities during days at sea.

wellsie82/Getty Images

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers on board. The line offers ships with 51 to 364 suites, which enables more personalized service and refined amenities. It also offers packages to reduce the stress that comes with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Venice to Athens

This 11-day trip makes its way through 11 ports in four countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. Walk cobblestone streets, see the distinctive windmills of Santorini, discover buzzing nightlife and secluded beaches on the Croatian island of Hvar, and more. On board, dine in one of the ship’s restaurants, take a dip in the pool, or lounge in a common space to discuss the day’s adventure with fellow guests.

A lavish French cruise line, Ponant has been sailing since 1988. Today, the small boats, Ponant Explorers, are outfitted with just 92 suites that can serve no more than 184 travelers. Throughout the boat, guests will find light-filled spaces and cozy cabins. These ships feature Blue Eye, an unusual lounge set below sea level for an underwater view of the ship's surroundings. From polar expeditions to countries nestled along the Mediterranean, Ponant is a reliable option for those seeking an immersive experience.

Trip to Try: Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights: Cruising Southern Italy and Sicily

Partnered with Smithsonian Journeys, Ponant offers a gourmand's Italian dream on this eight-day cruise. This trip begins in Valletta, Malta, before sailing to Sicily and up the Italian coastline to Livorno. Guests can drink volcanic wines in Taormina, eat Neapolitan pizza in Naples, and see fresh mozzarella made in Agropoli. Back on board, a guest chef prepares destination-inspired dishes. In addition to Italy's culinary delights, there are plenty of opportunities to see classic sites such as the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Cabins range from 151-square-foot interior staterooms to 712-square-foot suites to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  14-Day Adriatic Dream

The 14-day trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). Take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa on days at sea with the bonus of rocking waves that lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Danny Lehman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is another that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but the line more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, and kids and teen programming. Sink into the plush beds, which were created in collaboration with a sleep expert, for a great night's rest to feel fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  10-day Mediterranean and Israel

The 10-day trip stops in six ports across Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with oversized balconies.

Cunard Line

moisseyev/Getty Images

Classically elegant, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if style is your top priority. Its boats are opulent, including the Queen Elizabeth , which features art deco-influenced interiors and plush sundeck furnishings. Of course, high-end dining experiences are included.

Trip to Try:  Western Mediterranean

Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from England to Italy. Visit Seville from Cadiz, see Gaudí's architecture in Barcelona, tour Napoleon Bonaparte's childhood home on the island of Corsica, and shop your way through Rome. With several days at sea, you can make the most of onboard amenities.

Virgin Voyages

There's no doubt that Virgin Voyages is a departure from traditional cruising. With plush cabins and the promise of a party atmosphere, the cruise line has ditched many industry mainstays. Instead, guests will find PJ parties, pop-up circus installations, and open seating for over 20 meals designed by Michelin-starred chefs.

Trip to Try: The Irresistible Med

When you set sail on The Irresistible Med from Barcelona to Ibiza, there are plenty of opportunities to explore beaches, museums, and historic sites. For those hoping to visit the quaint villages of Provence, the French port of Toulon provides an easy access point. Other stops include Marina di Carrara, known for its sumptuous marble, and the island of Corsica. Enjoy a day of relaxation by sweating it out in the sauna or lounging poolside when out at sea. Ibiza is the final port-of-call, which gives guests plenty of time to enjoy the party capital on their own.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is the one to choose for groups with varied interests. Think, kids who want to play all day, adults who want to lounge by the pool, friends who want to take a historical tour, or those who want to stay up enjoying the onboard entertainment. It's also one of the few cruise lines to offer Mediterranean options for those short on time or who want to add a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  Three-Night Western Mediterranean

Spend three perfect days sailing from Rome to Barcelona. The quick cruise is a great way to hit the water if you want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. With a day in Naples, and access to Capri, check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have a comfortable place to call home each night.

The slide even features uphill sections that provide a sensation of weightlessness. At the end, you’ll hurtle through an open-air chute – the longest stretch of slide ever suspended over water.

AquaDunk – Disney Cruise Line

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

Disney’s AquaDunk is another thrilling slide that features a drop floor. Riders step into the capsule, the floor drops, and they are launched into a clear tube that extends 20 feet over the edge of the ship.

Epic Plunge – Norwegian Cruise Line

mediterranean cruise ships with water slides

Are the Water Slides Worth It at Citta del Mare?

By Jennifer Dombrowski 16 Comments

By now you’ve no doubt seen the pictures of the epic water slides that run down a cliff and deliver you right in to the Mediterranean Sea. Travel + Leisure even named the slide one of the world’s craziest when the pictures began circulating back in 2012. The slides are real and they’re located at the Citta del Mare Hotel Village in the province of Palermo, Sicily. And if you’ve already discovered that and read Citta Del Mare’s reviews on TripAdvisor , you might be wondering if the slides are actually worth it.

I wondered the same and put it to our Facebook community. With a resounding yes, I booked my last night in Sicily at Città del Mare to check out the situation for myself. I have to admit that the slides are a lot of fun and worth enduring the rest of the frustrating experience at this resort.

Citta del Mare

The Slides and Pool

The slides are the best part of Citta del Mare Sicily, but they are smaller than the infamous aerial photos make them look. We stayed mid-week and blissfully only had to share the slides with two little boys. There are only two slides and you can’t really just hang out in the pools between the slides because they are small. I would not want to be here when it’s busy because it could get too packed to really enjoy.

Though the slides aren’t quite as big as they look in photos, I thought they were actually the perfect size. These slides are work! You can get in from the first or second level. Otherwise, after each slide, you swim across the little pools, climb up the ladder to the next one and repeat all the way until you shoot out in to the Mediterranean Sea.

Be aware that the slides do close for riposa (Italy’s siesta time) from 12:30pm – 4pm. They are open 9am – 12:30pm and 4pm – 6pm.

There is also an Olympic sized swimming pool located at a different part of the resort and there were people both swimming laps and playing.

Citta del Mare

The Club Card

One of the most important things to understand, which I’m frankly still confused about, is Città del Mare’s club card. You can’t eat, drink or purchase anything at the resort with cash or a credit card. The club card is mandatory and they charge you at check-in for it. I paid € 20 and I got a different response from every staff member that I inquired with as to what I was actually paying for. It seems that the pool, slides and activities are not actually free for guests and that is what the “cost” of the card is for.

At reception you can put money on your card and use it to purchase drinks and snacks at the bars located around the resort. Any credit that you have left on the card is refunded at check-out.

If you chose the full-board option when you booked your room, you also swipe the card to access the buffet at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Citta del Mare

The Restaurant

Hotel Città del Mare is located in the middle of nowhere in the province of Palermo. The closest town is Terrasini, which is 7 kilometers away from the hotel village. That’s fine if you’re renting a car to get around Sicily, but if you’re using public transportation then you’re stuck with Citta del Mare’s restaurant.

There is only one restaurant and depending on the type of booking you made, you’ll have all your meals included (full board) or you’ll have to purchase meals (half board). We were staying in a superior room, which gave us access to a private dining area of the restaurant called Belvedere. The buffet part of the restaurant is € 7.50 per person per meal and Belvedere is € 12.50 per person per meal.

Our booking was the bed and breakfast option, so we purchased dinner and lunch since there were no other options for meals during our stay. We took our ticket to the restaurant and were seated in a section of the buffet that was separated with a screen from the larger portion of the buffet. It reminded me of a cruise ship as another two people were immediately seated with us at our table for four.

Citta del Mare

The food was just okay. Do not expect any spectacular Sicilian meals at the buffet. There were a variety of salads, hot dishes, a very small citrus mousse for dessert and wine and water on tap. I didn’t like the selection and a bowl of pasta with vodka sauce just didn’t leave me feeling satisfied.

After we’d eaten at the buffet, we noticed the Belvedere section as the guests seated there were being served meals and had bottles of wine and water on the tables. Back at the reception desk for about the tenth time in only a few hours since we’d checked in, we found out that we had actually paid for Belvedere but the staff did not seat us there.

Lunch in the Belvedere section was definitely higher quality than the buffet we’d had for dinner the night before. The food is served and you have a selection of first and second courses, as well as a small salad buffet. I had a pasta with mushrooms, calamari and roasted potatoes. I also sampled eggplant parmesan, green beans and a bread with tomatoes baked in it. Everything at lunch was delicious, so it’s well worth paying the extra couple Euro for the Belvedere.

Citta del Mare

Citta del Mare’s website clearly states that the rooms are basic. I wasn’t expecting much and the room was basic with a bed, desk, tv, bathroom and a balcony. The room was clean, but could desperately use some refurbishment. Many of the tiles in the bathroom were cracked or chipped, as was the stucco on the balcony.

There is air conditioning, but even on full blast at the coldest temperature it just seemed to blow warm air. Not surprisingly, the bed was like sleeping on a rock. I spent an uncomfortable night tossing and turning while I tried to find a way to get comfortable.

Most frustrating were the lack of outlets. We had to unplug the refrigerator in order to charge our phones as it was the only outlet in the bedroom. There was also one outlet in the bathroom.

Customer Service

The worst part of this resort was the customer service…or lack of. It literally took us 45 minutes to check in, and I mean 45 minutes from the time we stepped up to the desk and began the actual process of checking in. First, the receptionist tried to charge us the full rate when we had pre-paid online. We only had the balance of the club card due, which we knew had to be paid upon check-in.

Their system also does not allow for the resort to make a bill and make one charge on your credit card. After the receptionist ran the charge for the club card, she then wanted to individually charge us for the extra meals and the airport transfer service we booked.

If you’re an international traveler, you may incur a service charge called an international transaction fee every time you use your credit or debit card abroad. So running multiple charges meant we’d be paying an international transaction fee per each charge instead of just once.

We had to argue and finally a manager came and added up everything in order to make one charge on my debit card. It was ridiculous.

I already mentioned that we weren’t seated in the Belvedere section for dinner as we should have been. I spent another 30 minutes arguing about this with reception and trying to find out if there was a price difference between the two different areas of the dining room. There is: Belvedere is € 5 more than the buffet. I asked for a refund of the price difference and was told no because “I still ate dinner.” After standing my ground, I was finally offered a € 5 credit for each of us to use at the bar.

We booked the hotel’s airport transfer service and that was another fiasco. After arguing about something or other after dinner (honestly, we had to complain about so much that we can’t even remember all of the issues), the receptionist asked to verify what time we wanted the airport transfer for. We told her 3pm on our checkout day when we checked in and had received a ticket for the transfer. The receptionist then explained that she had marked the wrong time on our ticket earlier and changed the transfer time on her list.

When we got back to the room and double checked, I saw that our carbon copy of the ticket actually did have the correct time we requested on it. So she obviously had us confused with another guest and she’d just changed someone else’s transfer time on her list.

The next morning we mentioned this to reception so someone else wouldn’t miss their transfer to the airport. Imagine our horror when we discovered we weren’t even in the book!

To make up for all the inconveniences, the hotel did give us a late check-out and we were able to use our room right up until 3pm when we departed for the airport.

The Verdict

The location is very pretty and the grounds are well kept. Citta del Mare was fine for one night and to enjoy the water slides for an afternoon before flying home. We would not want to spend more than one night and we recommend booking a stay during the week. Book a superior room and opt for the Belvedere if planning to dine at the resort.

Are the water slides/pools open all y at round?

Jennifer Dombrowski says

September 28, 2015 at 4:47 PM

Sicily gets snow and the temperatures in Palermo can get down in to the 40s and 50s (Fahrenheit). I believe they are only open June – September, as is the case with most attractions like this in Italy.

March 10, 2016 at 9:44 PM

I will be visiting Palermo via Cruise in May and was wondering would it be possible to go on these slides?

March 12, 2016 at 12:35 PM

Are you planning to stay in or near Palermo at all? Or just have a day in port there? The slides are only available to guests of the resort, unfortunately.

Trudy Moulton says

May 6, 2016 at 2:45 AM

Is there any way one can pay to go on the slides (even once) and not be staying at the resort? (This is a stop on the cruise ship). MY KIDS WOULD LIVE IT!

May 8, 2016 at 1:03 PM

Hi Trudy, no there isn’t. You can only use the slides if you are a guest of the resort. I suppose you could book for just one night and not stay there since the room rates were pretty inexpensive. This resort isn’t very close to the port in Palermo, which I assume is your cruise ship stop, and the taxi ride there and back would be quite expensive.

January 5, 2019 at 7:28 AM

This is Sicily, not a 5 star resort in America. You go to this resort to unplug and relax, not be constantly plugged in. Go get a massage, relax by the pool, let the kids enjoy the kids programs. And yes the slides are awesome, even during the busy season. Went three years in a row while stationed in Sicily during our Navy years.

January 6, 2019 at 7:05 PM

Who said Citta del Mare was a 5 star resort or that we expected it to be? This site is basically an online travel magazine and we’re reviewing the resort. Part of that is taking a look at customer service (seriously lacking at Citta del Mare). Also important for many people is a reasonable number of electrical outlets available in the room to be able to charge up devices and plug in essentials.

We know hotels. We spend an average of 160 nights in hotels per year. We especially know European hotels since we’ve lived in Europe for almost 10 years now. All of that is why our readers look to our honest reviews.

Erin Guzzetta says

August 9, 2021 at 5:53 AM

We stayed there years ago and could not agree more about the customer service! We were not expecting a 5-star hotel at all—but the issues we dealt with were so frustrating. It was a really strange place to stay. The slides were fun for a half day but they were the only reason we stayed there.

August 11, 2021 at 2:43 PM

It is an odd place, but the slides are fun. As you said, the slides are really the only reason to stay there as it’s not really convenient to any other attractions.

Hi Denise, I’m not sure when it opened. It’s been at least a decade though.

Debbie says

May 23, 2022 at 4:21 AM

I was stationed in Sicily in 1983 and we went to Citta del Mare. The slides were already there. I will say my experience back then was phenomenal. The food was excellent and the staff very helpful. I guess over the years it hasn’t been as good. Loved the slides. For me it wasn’t work to do them it was so much fun.

Jessica Ryan says

April 22, 2023 at 10:11 PM

Jennifer from Sayville, NY? I went to that resort too! I also went down that slide, right into the Mediterranean Sea! I was scared to death, haha! I had a wonderful time there!

William says

June 17, 2023 at 1:09 AM

Is it possible to enter the slides without having a room ? Is a day ticket possible ?

June 20, 2023 at 10:02 AM

No, the slides are only available to guests of the resort.
