Metallica Kicks Off M72 World Tour: Set List and Videos

Metallica kicked off their M72 World Tour  at Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, beginning a sprawling road trip that will run through late 2024.

You can see the set list and videos from the performance below.

The metal giants kicked off their 16-song set with "Orion" — their first time using the  Master of Puppets instrumental as a show opener since 2011, according to setlist.fm . Other mainstays such as "Master of Puppets," "Battery," "Fade to Black," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Sad but True" also appeared.

Several classic songs were notably omitted on opening night, including "Enter Sandman" and "One" (the band played no tracks off  ... And Justice for All ). Metallica is playing two shows in each city on this tour, changing set lists and opening acts each night to create a "No Repeat Weekend," so those songs could still appear at their next show.

The band also played three songs off its new album  72 Seasons : "Lux Æterna" and the live debuts of "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away." Metallica released their 11th album two weeks ago, marking their first full-length since 2016's  Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct . The LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, ending a chart-topping streak that dated back to their 1991 self-titled album .

James Hetfield described the album's concept in an official statement: "Seventy-two seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

Metallica will return to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday with Floor Jansen and Ice Nine Kills in place of Architects and Mammoth WVH . Other support acts on different legs of the tour include Pantera , Greta Van Fleet and Five Finger Death Punch.

Here’s Metallica’s setlist from the first night of their M72 World Tour

From Sad But True to King Nothing to Lux Æterna – here’s what Metallica played in the opening night of their M72 World Tour.

Here’s Metallica’s setlist from the first night of their M72 World Tour

Tonight, Metallica kicked off the first date of their epic M72 World Tour in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The first of two shows they're playing the Dutch capital (the second is this Saturday), where they'll be playing two completely different setlists.

Not including their turns on Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel , this first night of the tour also marks the debut performances of brand-new tracks from the Four Horsemen's new album 72 Seasons, including Sleepwalk My Life Away and Screaming Suicide .

In a setlist full of surprises – opening on Orion?! – the band delved into their back catalogue, even bringing out King Nothing and The Day That Never Comes.

Metallica's M72 Tour will take them throughout Europe this summer, headlining two nights in each city (including a double-headline slot at Download Festival), performing 100 per cent different sets.

Who knows what the future will bring from such an ambitious tour, and a band who love to shake things up, but we tonight's show in Amsterdam is a pretty solid indication of where their heads are at, and what we can expect down the line...

Here's the full Metallica setlist from the opening night of their M72 World Tour.

Metallica’s M72 World Tour Set List

To celebrate their latest album, 72 Seasons, Metallica is shaking up the format of its tour. Instead of performing one night at each venue, the pioneering metal band is doing two nights back-to-back, each with totally different set lists, different supporting acts, and a strict promise to not play the same song twice in each city. They've also reimagined the structure of the stage itself. Rather than playing at one end of the stadium, they're performing on a giant, donut-shaped platform amid the fans (diehards can stand in the center, an area aptly titled the Snake Pit). In other words: headbanging heaven. Whether you're prepping for an upcoming show or reminiscing about one you recently attended, explore the tour-inspired set list here and put yourself in the pit.

No Stories, No Surrender: Bruce Springsteen Makes Up for Lost Time With Searing, 'Letter to…

Trending on billboard.

And both the song selection and the performance was pretty impeccable throughout. It felt a privilege to get near 10 minutes each of both the spellbinding Master of Puppets instrumental chugger “Orion” and the underrated 21st century “Simple Man”-turned-“Free Bird” power ballad “The Day That Never Comes,” with the band — minus the occasional Lars aberration — in total lockstep, guitarist Kirk Hammett’s solos in particular sounding as explosive and radiant as ever. Even most of the material from the new 72 Seasons , which can feel a little flat on record, came alive in this setting — sounding more credible than ever as forgotten b-sides or second-side cuts from the band’s classic period. (“If Darkness Had a Son,” though, will likely always be a tough hang.)

The show closed with “Master of Puppets” — a signature song which, after three and a half decades of fan worship, also become the band’s unlikely first Hot 100 top 40 hit in nearly 15 years last summer. The most indelible image of the evening — in our section at least — was a series of four pre-teens in matching Metallica shirts losing their minds (and eventually their shirts) to “Master,” all members-in-training of the Hellfire Club , no doubt. One of the adults supervising them was also wearing a shirt with a Napster logo — seemingly as neither an ironic nor confrontational gesture, but rather just as a winking acknowledgment of how much water under the bridge band and audience share after 40 years.

The most emotional moment of the night, however, came earlier, as Hetfield acknowledged thanked the crowd for “remembering my birthday” — the frontman having turned 60 just on Thursday. “My seventh decade on the planet… I can’t believe it,” he rhapsodized from on stage. “Younger me would be saying, ‘You made it. You effing made it.'” Then, before launching into “Fade to Black” — from the band’s second album, and still one of the most vivid, heartbreaking, and yet strangely empowering songs ever written about suicidal ideation — he reflected, “I’m glad I didn’t listen to my head when I was young.” It’s a long way to the top, but Hetfield and Metallica made a very good case on Friday for why getting there is worth the trip.

“Creeping Death” “Harvester of Sorrow” “Holier Than Thou” “King Nothing” “72 Seasons” “If Darkness Had a Son” “Fade to Black” “Shadows Follow” “Orion” “Nothing Else Matters” “Sad But True” “The Day That Never Comes” “Battery” “Fuel” “Seek and Destroy” “Master of Puppets”

Full setlist from night two of metallica in detroit.

Just like that, Metallica’s two shows in Detroit at Ford Field have come to a close. However, these shows left a massive impact that will have Detroit talking for months. Check out the full setlist from night one and two of Metallica in Detroit below.

With that show tonight, the North American leg of the M72 World Tour has come to a close. There was no better choice for a final show of the tour than the Motor City. Detroit showed up and showed their love for Metallica.

2023 M72 World Tour

When I arrived at Ford Field close to 4:00pm, the lines were already seemingly endless. Standing at the entrance, the line stretched as far as the eye could see. Hopefully people brought their passports because I’m pretty sure the line went all the way to the Ambassador Bridge and some people were waiting in Windsor. I’ve truly never seen anything like it.

The crowd wasn’t waiting for Metallica. They were lined up to get in for a full evening of rock and roll as early as they could. Ice Nine Kills took the stage first. Then, Five Finger Death Punch got the crowd hyped up and ready for Metallica.

My ears are still ringing. Metallica brought their A-game, that’s for sure. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a show with so much energy. From start to finish they brought it. There were no stopping The Might Met tonight.

Metallica Rocks Detroit

By looking at the setlist from night one , we knew we were in for a treat on Sunday night . Sunday night wasn’t only special because it was the final stop of their North American tour. The band played only a few of their hits on Friday and left on a lot on the table. So, we knew we could expect some of Metallica’s biggest hits on Sunday .

They definitely didn’t disappoint. This was my first time seeing Metallica and I can confidently say I will be seeing them again. It isn’t just a concert, it’s a full-on experience. There aren’t many bands in the world today capable of putting on a straight up experience like Metallica is. They are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Check out the full setlist from the second show at Ford Field below. Also, don’t miss parts one and two of Meltdown’s interview with Metallica’s Robert Trujillo! Keep scrolling after the setlist for night two to check out the full setlist from night one and an exclusive photo gallery from the shows!

Ice Nine Kills Setlist

Here’s the full setlist from Ice Nine Kills who kicked off the show. I was there, and this setlist was confirmed by setlist.fm .

  • Hip To Be Scared
  • Meat & Greet
  • Welcome To Horrorwood
  • Wurst Vacation
  • The Shower Scene
  • Stabbing In The Dark

Five Finger Death Punch Setlist

Five Finger Death Punch took the stage next. They got the crowd pumped up and ready for Metallica. Good choice for an opener. Here’s the setlist confirmed by setlist.fm .

  • Wash It All Away
  • Jekyll And Hyde
  • Bad Company (Cover)
  • Wrong Side Of Heaven
  • Welcome To The Circus
  • Under And Over It
  • The Bleeding

Metallica Setlist

Finally, just after 8:45pm Metallica blessed the stage at Ford Field in Detroit. For me, it exceeded expectations. I was blown away. Here’s the setlist confirmed by setlist.fm .

  • For Whom The Bell Tolls
  • Ride The Lightning
  • Dirty Window
  • If Darkness Had A Son
  • Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
  • You Must Burn!
  • The Call Of Ktulu
  • The Unforgiven
  • Wherever I May Roam
  • Moth Into Flame
  • Fight Fire With Fire
  • Whiskey In The Jar
  • Enter Sandman

Both shows were amazing and I can’t wait for Metallica to come through Detroit again soon. Idea: maybe next time instead of two shows…we can get four. Imagine the possibilities.

Check out the full setlist from night one at Ford Field below. Then keep scrolling to see an exclusive photo gallery from Metallica in Detroit!

Full Setlist From Night One Of Metallica At Ford Field

Night one of Metallica at Ford Field is officially in the books. It was glorious night of rock and roll with one of the biggest bands in the game. Now, we’re more ready than ever for Night 2 on Sunday. Check out the full setlist from night one of Metallica in Detroit below. They played a lot of hits, but saved some of their best for Sunday.

Detroit has been buzzing for months in anticipation of Metallica coming to Ford Field. Not only are we getting two nights of Metallica, we’re getting two totally different sets. Additionally, there will be two completely different openers for each night.

Metallica In Detroit Night One

Pantera and Mammoth WVH opened on Friday night. That’s three headline acts in one night. How could it get any better? Sunday comes close with opening acts Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills. Again, two bands who can certainly stand on their own and deliver.

The pair of shows in Detroit will wrap up the North American leg of their M72 World Tour . The band’s 11th studio album, 72 Seasons , dropped in April of this year. The album currently has an impressive score of 92% on Google. Several singles have been released off the album including “72 Seasons,” “ Too Far Gone? ,” and “ Lux Æterna .”

Metallica is staying busy during their time here in Detroit, but Robert Trujillo made time to have an interview with Meltdown. I learned so much about Robert during this conversation. He’s a Lions fan? Bonus points! James Hetfield has a sold out book signing of his upcoming book “ Messengers: The Guitars Of James Hetfield ” at Third Man Records on Saturday.

Metallica’s M72 World Tour

Below, you can check out the full setlist from the entire evening of Night 1 at Ford Field. That means the complete Metallica set, all of Pantera, and the full Mammoth WVH setlist. Now, since Metallica will be doing two totally different setlists, we can look at what was played Friday and will have a better picture of what to expect on Sunday.

It’s always disappointing when the band doesn’t end up playing the song you’ve been waiting for. This way, we’ll know if they already played our favorite tracks. If they didn’t, there’s a good chance they’ll be played on Night 2 on Sunday. Looking at the setlist, it looks like they’re saving some of their best for last.

Check out our exclusive Metallica photo gallery and the full setlist from Night One below! Can’t wait for Sunday! Update: see the full setlist from night two here .

Mammoth WVH

If you ever get a chance, you’ve got to see Mammoth live! They put on a great show. My buddy sent me this setlist and it was confirmed by setlist.fm .

  • Another Celebration at the End of the World
  • You’re to Blame
  • I’m Alright

What To Expect For Night 2

So, seeing what’s above is definitely a good setlist. However, I noticed some of my favorites weren’t played on Friday. Does that mean we can expect to hear “Enter Sandman,” “One,” and “For Whom The Bell Tolls” on Sunday? I hope so!

Metallica Pays Tribute to Fan Who Died During Edmonton Show

' src=

Metallica has taken to their social media channels to pay tribute to a fan, who died during their August 23 show in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The band shared a photo of the late fan. They added, “Friday night, August 23rd, in Edmonton we lost a Metallica family member at the show. He died due to health conditions. Leaving the earthly body and onto the next adventure. Very sad when death happens, but we’re touched that he spent some of his final, hopefully joyful, time with us.”

They concluded, “Our condolences to the family and friends of Lorne ‘Viking.’ With Love and Respect, Metallica.”

RIP my dear friend.” We send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Lorne.

Metallica M72 Tour Details

Metallica has two more cities left in North America on their M72 tour. They’ll play Lumen Field in Seattle on August 30 and September 1. Then, they’ll head to Mexico City to perform at Foro Sol on September 20, 22, 27 and 29. The M72 World Tour was first announced in November 2022, when their latest album 72 Seasons was first announced. Their tour dates were stretched across 2023 and 2024. This time around, the band performed two shows in each city on the tour. Each show featured completely different setlists and different support acts. Among the acts who joined Metallica on the road were the reunited Pantera, Mammoth WVH, Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills and Greta Van Fleet. When the tour was first announced, Metallica touted their “bold new in-the-round stage design,” which relocated the Snake Pit to center stage. The tour also featured discounted tickets for fans under 16 and the “I Disappear” full-tour pass. The M72 Tour production has been massive. As previously reported, Metallica has a tour crew of over 150 people. In addition to that crew, there are also 40 steelworkers, 168 local production hands and 92 truck drivers hauling all of the stage pieces to and from every city.
