How To Use The Young Living Diffuser

You’re absolutely in love with Young Living diffusers but have no clue how to operate them! Don’t worry, we’ve all been there before.

There are several Young Living diffusers to choose from, but for the most part, they all operate very similarly. Below we will walk you step-by-step on how to use the young living diffuser.

Young Living Diffuser Step Chart

Step 1. make sure you have all the diffuser parts, step 2. remove the outer cover and inner cover, step 3. add water, step 4. add essential oil, step 5. place inner cover and outer cover back on, step 6. plug-in the diffuser, step 7. turn the power on, step 8. rinse or clean after use, desert mist, young living essential oils, the wrap up, steps on how to use the young living diffuser.

Most of the Young Living brands’ diffusers are the ultrasonic diffuser type. This just means their diffusers use water and a vibrating disc that sits on the bottom of the water tank, turning the water into a mist to permeate the air with lovely essential oil fragrances.

We will break down every step into baby steps to make sure you know how to use the Young Living Diffuser. Here is a simple and easy guide for you to follow.

When you first get a new Young Living diffuser, always make sure every diffuser part is inside the packaging. Filling your diffuser tank with water and then realizing the top is missing would be a huge bummer!

In general, most Young Living diffusers come with four pieces;

  • Plug-in cord (if it isn’t battery operated)
  • Diffuser base that holds the water tank
  • Top for the water tank
  • Outer cover for design

Make Sure You Have All The Diffuser Parts

Also, make sure the metal disc attached to the bottom of the water tank is present. Don’t push too hard on the disc or your diffuser won’t work properly and you’ll have to buy a replacement disc.

Shake your diffuser lightly to make sure the disc isn’t loose. If all parts are there, you are ready to move onto step 2.

The outer cover, or the outer lid, lifts straight up off the base. Make sure you hold the base and outer cover in both hands firmly so you don’t throw it across the room!

Next, you’ll lift the small inner cover (lid or top) straight up. This inner cover easily comes off and has a small hole on the top where your mist will escape.

Some Young Living diffusers suggest you use distilled water, some diffusers suggest tap water, and others say you can use either. The Desert Mist , Lantern, and Aria diffuser all use purified or distilled water. While the Dew Drop and Rainstone diffusers use tap or spring water.

Feel free to read our article about the arguments for and against distilled vs tap water in a diffuser. The best action is to follow the recommended water type of your specific Young Living diffuser.

Add Water

The Young Living diffuser comes with a water fill line mark – It will either be a line or a bright-colored marker. Add room-temperature water into the water tank until it reaches and doesn’t exceed the water fill line.

Make sure you don’t get water into the misting eyelet located on the side of your water tank base. If water gets inside, flip your diffuser upside down and let it sit on a hand towel.

You’ve made it to the fun part! It’s time to add your fragrance of choice to your Young Living Diffuser.

Young Living diffusers come in different ml water tanks. The best rule of thumb is to add five drops for every 100ml .

So, the 200ml Desert Mist diffuser would take 10 drops of essential oil. If you like your fragrances stronger you can always add more drops as needed. Feel free to mix a few different essential oils too (just follow the water to oil rule).

Add Essential Oil

Some Young Living diffuser users add essential oils before adding water because the water helps break up the essential oils better. If you go this route, just make sure you aren’t dropping the oils directly on the metal ion disc.

Once the water is added place the inner lid/cover on top of the water tank. For the diffuser to work properly, make sure both the inner cover and outer cover are securely in place.

Make sure your hands are dried off for this step. We don’t want Einstein’s hair! Plug the power adapter into a power outlet.

Plug-In The Diffuser

When it comes to removing your power adapter from the wall, never tug on the wire. Instead, grab the plug from the hard plastic piece (wall plug or anchor) and gently pull the plug from the wall outlet.

Lastly, turn the power on by pressing the power button located on the diffuser base. Some of the Young Living diffusers have different button presses that activate different features.

For the Desert Mist diffuser , one power button press runs your diffuser on high mode. Two power button presses run it in low mode and three button pushes are in intermittent mode. Desert Mist also has a light feature button you press multiple times to cycle through different colors.

For the Dew Drop diffuser , pushing the button once turns it on. Pressing it twice switches the light off and three times will turn the diffuser off.

Let your diffuser run for 30 minutes at a time. Running your diffuser longer than that in one period of time may give you some upsetting side effects , like a headache or nausea.

To learn more about side effects from prolonged exposure to essential oils, read our article, “ Can A Diffuser Be Left On All Night? ”

After each use, you’ll want to rinse your diffuser’s water tank out. Don’t forget to rinse the inner lid cover with water as well.

If you plan to store your diffuser or not use it for a while, make sure you deep clean instead of rinsing it out. Leaving a diffuser without a deep clean can cause essential oil to build up in the water tank and the metal ion disc causing mold.

Rinse Or Clean After Use

Here is a quick rundown of what goes into a deep rinse;

  • Rinse the diffuser out
  • Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the ion disc (don’t push on the disc too hard!)
  • Use a mild soap and water mix to clean the plastic inner lid/cover
  • Never use harsh aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives to clean the plastic housing

What is a Passive Diffuser (and how do I use mine)?

How Do Passive Diffusers Work?

Will it smell the same, reed diffusers, ceramic diffusers, lava rock diffusers, diffuser jewelry, terracotta diffusers, benefits of using passive diffusers, passive diffuser safety, choosing the right essential oils for passive diffusers, fun fact: did you know, final thoughts.

Passive diffusers work on a simple principle: they rely on natural air flow to disperse aroma.

Unlike active diffusers , they don’t use heat or electricity. They gently waft your favorite scents into the air, no plugs or batteries needed.

Think of it as a gentle, slow release of aroma into your space.

In short: no.

Aroma intensity is more subtle with passive diffusers compared to an ultrasonic diffuser. You won’t get the strong, continuous scent like you do with an active diffuser.

Instead, it’s a soft, lingering presence, perfect for creating a relaxed, soothing atmosphere. This makes passive diffusers ideal for continuous, low-maintenance scenting in smaller spaces.

PRO TIP: Make sure your space is well ventilated. If there is no air flow, there will be no aroma.

Types of Passive Diffusers

There are different types of passive diffusers. Each type offers a unique way to enjoy your essential oils.

Have a look and choose one that vibes with your personal space and style!

Think minimalist chic. Black vs White.

Lava rock is black in color, whereas ceramics are white.

Simple yet effective, the lava rock absorbs and diffuses oils naturally.

how to use your passive diffuser

Passive diffusers are a gem in the world of aromatherapy.

  • They’re eco-friendly, no electricity needed . Perfect for sustainable living.
  • The subtlety of their aroma output makes them ideal for small spaces like offices or bedrooms, where a gentle fragrance is preferred over an overpowering scent. They create a serene ambiance, enhancing the mood without overwhelming the senses .
  • They usually cost between $10-$15 only. That’s super affordable, especially for a cute essential oils gift .
  • Plus, they’re often designed to be so cute and chic, adding a touch of elegance to any space.

It’s important to be mindful of aromatherapy safety , particularly around children and pets. Some essential oils can be harmful if ingested or come in contact with the skin.

  • Always place diffusers out of reach of young children and animals.
  • Choose oils that are safe for the entire household.
  • Here are my guides to essential oils that are safe for cats , dogs , or children .

With proper care, passive diffusers can be a safe and long-lasting addition to your home.

It’s simple: I diffuse anything in my passive diffuser, that I would put into a regular diffuser.

Just think about the intended impact, like relaxation , focus , or energy.

And experiment with different oils! Sometimes it can take a while until you find your fave.

Did you know passive diffusing is as old as time? Well, almost! Ancient Egyptians used passive diffusers in their temples and homes. Picture this: a simple bowl of aromatic oils, gently infusing the air with natural fragrances. These traditional methods paved the way for today’s passive diffusers.

We’ve come a long way, but the essence remains the same – turning everyday spaces into aromatic havens.

Passive diffusers offer a natural and energy-efficient way to infuse your surroundings with delightful aromas.

Whether it’s creating a calming atmosphere for relaxation or a refreshing ambiance for work, a passive diffuser can be your ticket to a more enjoyable space.

5 fascinating reasons to visit the Urals republic of Udmurtia

5 fascinating reasons to visit the Urals republic of Udmurtia

The Republic of Udmurtia, 750 miles northeast of Moscow, offers the authentic ethnic color of the Middle Urals, villages, folk music and - strange as it may seem - a concentration of defense industry plants. Here is Russia Beyond’s guide to the top attractions in in the capital of the republic, Izhevsk, and its environs if you find yourself here.

1. Fire an AK-47

Fire an AK

Izhevsk is the city where Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer of the most popular assault rifle in the world, the AK-47, lived and worked. The museum carrying his name is situated in the very center of Izhevsk near Krasnaya [Red] Square. The museum's collection has more than a hundred types and models of the AK-47  (the AK stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova - Kalashnikov's Automatic) but at the very least it is worth a visit for its shooting gallery. Here anyone can fire a rifle, automatic weapon or pistol provided they have two IDs (for instance, passport and driving license) on them and about $17.

2. Play Pyotr Tchaikovsky's grand piano

Wirth grand piano on which little Pyotr used to play.

Wirth grand piano on which little Pyotr used to play.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky's family estate is situated 30 miles northeast of Izhevsk, in the small Urals town of Votkinsk. Here the future composer of "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" spent the first eight years of his life and composed his earliest works.

Today it combines a modern multimedia museum and a historical reconstruction of life in the 19th century. The best time to visit is in the summer. But you can listen to a symphony orchestra, go on a night quest around the estate and taste pancakes with herbal tea and "tsar's jam" made from Urals grapes at any time.

The most precious exhibit here is the German-made Wirth grand piano on which little Pyotr used to play. Every year in March admirers of the composer and musicians from all over the world come to a Tchaikovsky festival in Votkinsk. The keenest guests are allowed to play on the grand piano, so you can try your luck.

3. Taste Udmurt cuisine

Taste Udmurt cuisine

Taste Udmurt cuisine

Udmurt national cuisine abounds with baked dishes, exotic names and homemade infusions. Perepecha (a sort of Udmurt version of pizza), tabani (thin flat dough cakes), kystyby (another Udmurt flat cake) with caviar and eggs, and dumplings with sauerkraut - you should try all of them without delay! But be careful with alcoholic infusions: They are treacherous and not to everyone's taste. But you have no chance of getting away without trying peshchatem (a hot drink based on home-distilled alcohol, herbal tea and honey) with which guests are usually greeted.

You can try all these recipes at the Bobrovaya Dolina ethnic center at 4, Sverdlov Street. There you will also find examples of Udmurt design and Udmurt steam baths. Or you can go to the Khokhloma restaurant , which offers a menu of Russian and Udmurt dishes.

4. Visit the village where the Buranovo Grannies live

The singing group

The singing group "Buranovskiye Babushki"

After the hitherto little known grandmothers from the village of Buranovo (20 miles south of Izhevsk) took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and won the hearts of millions of people with their explosive song "Party for Everybody", hordes of tourists rushed to their native village. Now it is one of Udmurtia's main attractions. The most interesting thing in Buranovo is of course the grannies themselves - the members of a folklore group are always happy to see anyone who wants to talk to them. Ask anyone how to find the grannies and they will help you since the village has only 640 inhabitants. Or come on their day, May 26.

In addition, Buranovo is a good place for ecotourism, where you can immerse yourself in rural life or go horse riding.

5. Go to an ethnic festival

Byg-Byg festival

Byg-Byg festival

Fortunately, there are so many of them in Udmurtia that, whenever you come here, there will be a festival of something somewhere nearby. In November, the republic's government unveiled a Calendar of Event Tourism listing all the events of the year. Would you like a gastronomic tour of Finno-Ugric cuisine? Then the Byg-Byg festival (Staryye Bygi village, 5 July) is for you. To see Udmurt culture, beautiful countryside and items of folklore, go to the Gerber festival (Pekshur village, 16 June). And, to take another example, the Rus Druzhinnaya festival (Kudrino village, in July) is about how in old Russia they not only fought in wars but also put on battle professionally for entertainment. Enjoy two days in a tent camp with a field kitchen, re-enactments and, of course, doing battle "Slav style".

Udmurtia history & culture, Kalashnikov & Chaikovsky 2-day tour to Udmurtia covering its capital Izhevsk and second city Votkinsk Udmurtia The history of Udmurtia starts in ancient times, when the Udmurt people lived in the current Kirov and Tatarstan areas. Ethnic conflicts with other local people (among which the Tatars) as well ,as violent christianisation drove the Udmurts to the north-east, further away of the banks of the Volga river. They settled down in an uninhabited area around the Izh River, which later became the Republic of Udmurtia. The first Russians came to Udmurtia in the 12th century, but it was not until 1552 - when the Russians overthrew the Tatar leadership of neighbouring Tatarstan - that Russian presence in Udmurtia became obvious with foundation of towns. Izhevsk Izhevsk, the city that became capital of Udmurtia in 1921, was founded in 1760 on the banks of the Izh river/pond ,as a settlement for the workmen of a local iron plant producing ship anchors. In the early 1800's, arms and tool factories were built. It was mainly the arms (and arms mechanics) industry that hugely developed over a relatively short period of time.Until now it supplied 12,5 million (!) arms to the army. It is the very same industry that Izhevsk became famous for - especially when Kalashnikov, a local mechanics engineer, had his huge successes in gun engineering. Kalashnikov became a Soviet hero when his AK-47 won many (international) prizes and eventually became the world's most popular automatic machine gun. Modern Izhevsk has 800.000 inhabitants, of which one third are Udmurts. In spite of its importance, Izhevsk has poor transport connections,it is not located at the Trans Siberian Railroad - but it can be easily accessed by road from Perm... Program Day 1 Transfer (5 hours) from Perm to Izhevsk in the morning. Small tour through the centre, seeing the Udmurt presidential residence, the Great Patriotic War memorial with its eternal flame and the central orthodox church. Visit to the Kalashnikov Museum, a large and very modern museum, which boasts a complete range of Kalashnikov models. The world famous AK-47 is, of course, among the collection. Lunch on arrival. Visit to the"National centre of decorative and applied art of Udmurtia". The centre functions as a museum, but additionally offers several workshops where one can see how art is applied, including patterned weaving, patterned needlework, decorative wood working, decorative painting, etc. The centre has a large souvenir shop - the only of its kind where traditional Udmurt applied art (its own work) can be purchased. The building in which the museum is located was built in 1810 and now is an architectural monument. Transfer to architectural and ethnographic museum “Ludervai” ( 20 km). Excursion in the museum with demonstration of udmurt folklore ceremonies and traditions. Transfer back to Izhevsk. Dinner in museum-inn "Podkova". Podkova is a strikingly original combination of a restaurant and ethnographic museum, of which the excellent menu offers some traditional Udmurt dishes. Transfer to hotel, overnight stay in hotel in centre of Izhevsk. Day 2 Breakfast. The Udmurt language (Finno-Ugric) originally had no written form. Instead, decorative art (always rich in colour and variety of typical patterns) was commonly practised to replace the need of cultural expression. It is this very skill that the Udmurts remain famous for in present times. Transfer to Votkinsk, the town where famous composer Chaikovsky was born and spend 8,5 years of his life. Just before arrival in Votkinsk, a short visit to the museum of Galina Kulakova - Udmurtia's most famous sport legend (cross country skiing) - is planned. She won silver and bronze on the winter olympics in Grenoble in 1968, three times gold in Sapporo (1972), gold and bronze in Innsbruck (1976) and silver in Lake Placid (1980). Lunch on arrival in Votkinsk. Visit to the impressive former house of Chaikovsky: the Chaikovsky Museum. Excursion 2 hours. Transfer to Chaikovsky (town on the way to Perm, south of Perm region). Visit to ethnographic museum “Saigatka”. Transfer to Perm, arrival in the evening. Optional program. Dinner. Overnight stay at the museum-house of artists Svedomsky. Day 3 Breakfast. Transfer to Perm. On the way stop in the town of Osa, visit to museum of local lore with unique diorama of historic events, that took place in the 17 th century. Lunch. Arrival to Perm in the evening.   Persons 2 3 4 5 6 7 8-12 12-16 16+ 2-day tour to Udmurtia 942 786 577 504 455 421 394 375 req. Optional 3-day tour 1188 898 752 665 608 567 535 521 req.
