Where is the Kappa House from 'Scream Queens' Located?

The fictional Kappa Kappa Tau house in

Editor's note: This article was originally published in September of 2015 and has been updated with the newest information.

In 2015, the Ryan Murphy horror-comedy-canon Scream Queens premiered on Fox. Like the third and fourth seasons of Murphy's American Horror Story series (which he co-created with Brad Falchuk who, along with Ian Brennan, collaborated with Murphy on Scream Queens ), the horror spoof about the cutthroat — literally — Kappa Kappa Tau sorority was filmed in New Orleans. Local spots like Tulane University (playing the fictional Wallace University) and the P.J.'s Coffee location on Maple Street (disguised as the campus coffee shop, The Grind) are very recognizable on the show. But the place where all the action (read: murder) happens, the Kappa house, is harder to locate in real life — and that's because it's in an exclusive neighborhood in Old Metairie.

While many of the Kappa house interior scenes were shot at Second Line Stages in the LGD (evidence here and here ) the exterior of the house is at 500 Northline St. in Old Metairie in the exclusive Metairie Club Gardens. A photo album of the home found online shows the recognizable location, sans Greek letters.

The Jefferson Parish Assessor's database lists the owner as Joseph Canizaro, founder of First Bank and Trust and founder, president and CEO of Columbus Properties, LP, a commercial real estate development company. Here you can see the home dressed up for the holidays in a New Orleans Magazine feature .

Other locations that have been linked to the show through neighborhood casting notices are the 1600 block of Palmer Avenue , the 6100 – 6200 block of St. Charles Avenue, and 1415 Third Street (which was at one point the most expensive home on the market in New Orleans ).

Do you know anything about any Scream Queens locations, or just want to chat about who you think the Red Devil is? Send us a tip !

Kappa Kappa Tau

Kappa Kappa Tau , or simply known as Kappa or KKT , is the most demanded sorority of Wallace University featured in the first season of Scream Queens , introduced in the episode Pilot . In Seven Minutes in Hell it was mentioned that the sorority was founded by Madam Cynthia Rogers Bouvet. It was formally led by Chanel Oberlin and Zayday Williams , and its members appear to be targeted by the main antagonist, the Red Devil . In The Final Girl(s) , Zayday becomes the sole president of Kappa Kappa Tau with Grace Gardner as her vice president and Hester Ulrich as treasurer. Due to Zayday's early graduation, Hester's imprisonment, and Grace's commitment to an insane asylum, it is unknown who holds the current council positions at Kappa.

Earl and Roger manage to, but Caulfield, having no arms, struggles to get up, the killer knocks the ladder over, causing him to fall and is stabbed twice in the chest and has head chopped off with an axe.

Regardless of what happened, the Kappa sisters and Dickie Dollar brothers decide to play "Truth or Dare" to determine who the killer is. Soon it's Chanel #5 and Roger's turn and they walk in. Chanel and Chad are walking back into the living room when they hear a scream. They go down to the basement and find Hester who discovered Sam's body and some of the sisters claim that Hester's the killer as she was the first to find her.

Back in Chanel's closet, Chanel #5 and Roger, who probably didn't hear the scream, are making out until Roger starts talking about how happy he is to be separated from his brother, Dodger. While he continues to talk, Chanel #5 sees the Red Devil behind him and Roger is shot three times with a nail gun and falls to the floor as the Red Devil continues to shoot him with the nail gun while #5 watches in horror. The killer continues to shoot him until they run out of nails and they leave, #5 then screams.

The group enter the closet and are shocked to see Roger dead, but soon claim #5 as the killer. Chad mentions him and his brothers fighting two Red Devils, letting everyone knows there's now two killers. Soon he finds a trap door under one of the Chanel's shelves. The group suggest that's how the killer got in and left after killing Roger. Chanel and Zayday go explore it.

Angered by this, Chanel storms out of the room to prove #2 wrong.

After receiving information from Dean Munsch at the asylum due to the murder of Dr. Steven Munsch, Grace and Pete are seen analyzing pictures given to them by Detective Chisolm . In their discoveries, they find a picture of a half-eaten bologna sandwich, they came to the conclusion that Munsch couldn't have killed her ex-husband Steven due to her disliking of bologna. Grace assumes it could've been Feather as Pete says they need to get Feather and the sandwich's DNA as they walk out.

The Chanels are seen again in the room attempting to contact Chanel #2. Once they get a connection, Chanel expresses her anger towards #2 after she lied about Chad cheating on her with a goat and explains his disability that he can only drink lactose-free goat milk. Chanel #5 interrupts her by saying that #2 never said he was cheating on Chanel with a goat, Chanel quickly shuts her up. Hester tells #2 to prove she is present by asking her how many tampons she has in her purse, the planchette lands on "9" and Hester admits that she is correct. Chanel questions how large Hester's cooch is after she reveals her nine tampons. Chanel #3 then asks #2 what breakfast cereal she almost choked on as a child, the planchette lands on "Ix," Chanel assumes it's "Dix" but #3 assures her it was "Kix." #5 suggests that they should stop but Chanel shuts her down and continues. Chanel then asks the board who the killer was as the plachette spelled "You." Chanel is outraged by this answer and tells #2 to have fun burning in hell as she storms. The Chanels are frozen in fear as they look at each other and run to the bathroom. Hester believes that #2 is telling the the truth from beyond the grave, #3 then asks if they should really believe a satanic talking board. Hester implies they should due to it knowing how many tampons she had in her purse. #3 admits that they can't tell the police because she'll only get bailed out again. Hester then comes up with the plan that they have to kill Chanel before she kills them.

The Chanels are seen in the kitchen as they plot to kill Chanel. #5 suggests that they poison her bras, Hester explains to her that it is a horrible idea, and suggests that they crush diamonds and have a sugar party and feed Chanel the diamonds that would kill her from the inside. #5 questions the sugar party but it is shut down by #3 as she thinks it is a great idea. Chanel then appears and asks what's a great idea. Hester explains to her that they were planning to throw a sugar party as Chanel expresses her liking to them. Chanel asks for Prunex, which are her liquid laxatives. After Chanel grabs her prunex, she goes back upstairs to head to bed. Once Chanel walks out, Hester announces that after Chanel falls asleep, they are going to murder Chanel.

Chanel being awakened by #2

As Chanel is asleep, she is awakened by Chanel #2. Chanel asks her why is she here and that she thought she was dead. #2 assures her that she is dead and that she is burning in hell, #2 then goes on to explain what life in hell is like. Chanel #2 then tells Chanel that her job in hell is to pick food out of Uday and Qusay Hussein's beards with her teeth and tells her that the only way to get to heaven is to make amends with her. #2 admits that she always admired Chanel and that she was always intimidated by her beauty and intelligence. She then apologized for having sex with Chad and admitted that she only did it because she was jealous and wanted everything Chanel had. Chanel asks her why she said that Chad was cheating on her and that she was the killer, #2 then apologized and expressed that she was in a bad mood at the time due to being motorboated by Adolf Hitler. Chanel then thanks #2 and accepts her apology and says sorry for her murder. #2 then informs Chanel that the Chanels are coming back home from the mall to kill Chanel with a bowling ball. Chanel suggests that she needs to kill them first yet #2 tells her to be the bigger person because these girls need her and to be a leader. Chanel then wakes up from her prunex fever dream.

Pete and Grace are seen in the Kappa living room with Detective Chisolm as he confirms that the DNA on Feather's toothbrush and the bologna sandwich are linked. Dean Munsch is later seen walking in the house after being released from the mental hospital and hearing about Feather's arrest. Munsch then reveals that Feather had a blog about bologna, which was enough to create an "orgy" of evidence. Grace wants to know how Feather is apart of everything as Munsch insists she comes to her office next week.

Detective Chanels

The Chanels are seen in the living room as Chanel confronts them on attempting to murder her. They all apologize and Chanel accepts. Chanel then gives them presents which include detective hats and magnifying glasses. Chanel then tells them that they have to take down the real killers, as Feather is too dumb to actually be the Red Devil killer. She then tells the girls that Zayday and Grace are the killers and they are trying to take the sorority down and steal their boyfriends. The Chanels are later seen looking above Grace and Zayday as they walk into the house and then looking at each other.

Mommie Dearest [ ]

At the Kappa house, Chanel calls all of her minions to a meeting to receive more evidence that Zayday and Grace are the Red Devil killers.

Hester states that she rummaged throught he best friends' things and she found their pills, and said that their cycles are synced together, and states "those who pill together kill together" and Chanel quickly shoots down her evidence.

Then Chanel #5 states that if you arrange Zayday's full name, it states "I WILL SLAY LIZ DAW". Chanel #5 states she doesn't exactly know who that person is, but they need to protect her. Chanel is very disappointed in their evidence and thinks it's terrible, although Chanel #3 states nothing.

Denise is seen making mozzarella sticks, and Chanel #3 sees her doing it. She questions Denise's appearance at Kappa house, and Denise states that she moved in. There is a flashback with Cathy and Denise.

Chanel #3 asks Denise to close her eyes and think of the biggest number she can think of. Denise says $1 million, and Chanel #3 is questioning her answer and Denise changes it to $3 million. Chanel #3 says "Fine.", and says that she could get that huge sum of money if she could find solid evidence that Grace and Zayday are the killers. Denise agrees to the deal.

Jennifer can be seen dumping bags filled with scented candles and says how she's going to kill some little bitch, when Denise comes in and asks who she's talking about. Jennifer then jumps into a conversation about how this lady lied about a discount.

Denise then questions about Zayday, and Jennifer tells her a story about what Zayday told her about a group at her high school called the "Peacocks". Zayday then pops into the scene holding a cigarette and tells them to back off, and tells them to watch out.

Jennifer is stabbed on the top of her head by the Red Devil that night while making a candle vlog.

In the living room of Kappa house, Chanel is meeting up with the Scotland Yard detectives to find out evidence that Grace and Zayday are the Red Devil killers.

Instead of dirt on Grace and Zayday, they found evidence that Chanel #5 is the killer, and Chanel finds out that Chanel #5's real name is Libby Putney . Chanel has a little laugh, but gets serious again because that's not the correct person.

Even thought they didn't find evidence on Grace, the Scotland Yard detectives did find a criminal record on Grace's mother. They hand Chanel a manila folder containing all the felons that her mother did.

After this, Grace rushes into Kappa house and notices Chanel in the living room and walks in. They have an argument about her mother and Chanel goes too far and Grace smacks her on the face and storms out.

Denise Hemphill walks in wearing Chanel #5's clothing and states that she's the new house mother of Kappa, and Chanel #5 is outraged that not just Denise is house mother of her sorority, but also that she's wearing her clothes, and Denise thanks her for the clothes.

Ghost Stories [ ]

In Kappa house, Denise decides to tell the Chanels a few ghost stories, saying that this will alleviate fear between the girls. But, the ghost stories directly reference the Red Devil , scaring them even more.

Later on, Denise can be seen in the bathroom, and a reference of the ghost story she told can be seen and the Red Devil attacks her, and it results in a victory for Denise.

In Zayday and Grace 's bedroom, Zayday can be seen with Earl Grey , with Earl saying that they haven't had their first kiss yet. So they do, and Earl says he has to run off to get a few 'supplies'. Earl was later murdered by Boone .

Chanel #5 has had enough of this Red Devil thing going on at her school, so she leaves, but shortly come back after an incident with the Red Devil herself occurred.

Chanel #6 confesses (lies) that she is pregnant with Chad Radwell and states that he will have to take to the Hamptons for Thanksgiving, but Chanel is enraged that her on-and-off boyfriend has impregnated one of her Chanels. Chanel, as a reflex of anger, pushes Hester down the stairs, therefore killing her.

Thanksgiving [ ]

Chanel tells Chad that Hester wasn't actually pregnant, and that she pushed Hester down the stairs. As a reflex for necrophilia, Chad asks to see the body, so Chanel leads him to the meat locker, but Hester isn't there, and Chad suggests that Hester is still alive.

At Kappa House, they have a Thanksgiving dinner there when everybody realizes that nobody is welcoming at any dinner they've went to, so they stay at Kappa house.

Chanel lifts the cover to see what's on the menu, and it turns out that the turkey is actually Gigi 's head.

Black Friday [ ]

Chanel is seen when she talks about how Christmas is one of the best holidays because of Black Friday , where she can buy cheap presents for her friends, The Chanels .

Dean Munsch notices the Chanels in sophisticated outfits walking down the staircase, and Munsch stops them in their tracks. She said that the Chanels can't go to Black Friday doorbusters due to the horrifying Thanksgiving dinner that occurred.

Chanel Oberlin states the facts about what happened during the dinner, which stops the Dean in her tracks, and the Chanels walk out.

Zayday could be seen on the couch crying and Dean Munsch was comforting her.

Chanel is seen back at Kappa house with a sling, with the other Chanels safe and unharmed.

The sorority sisters and the Chanels have a meeting and decided that they want to kill Dean Cathy Munsch.

The next day, Chanel and Grace present apple cider with the blowfish poison, with the motive to kill, to Dean Munsch. They all take a sip, but then the cup with the poisoned apple cider was chugged down by Dean Munsch, with no sign whatsoever of making an effect.

Even though it didn't work, they still hatched up a plan to kill Munsch. The plan was to freeze her to death, and yet that still didn't work.

The process was called cryotherapy, where a person would be in a chamber and the temperature could be set to boiling hot, or freezing cold, and Dean Munsch said that she's never felt better.

In her room, Chanel is seen writing a vulgar email to the Chanels and Zayday about their failure to come to the pool to drown the Dean of the university, saying that even a monkey could follow those easy and well-explained rules. The Red Devil presumably had forwarded the email to the entire proximity of the university . The email was then featured on the news, to Chanel's horror, so she decides to kill herself.

She orders a snake online, thinking that if she lets it bite her, the venom will kill her. Zayday walks in and says that the snake isn't even venomous. Zayday puts Chanel's head on her lap, and says that she'll help Chanel get through with this incident, and after that, the Red Devil comes in unannounced, and yet he's still clumsy.

The Red Devil turns out to be a pizza delivery guy with a bomb strapped to his back, and in five seconds, he explodes. Hester says that there's this crazy woman outside yelling "dork''.

The Final Girl(s) [ ]

There is a flash forward to 2016, where Zayday Williams and Grace Gardner are talking to new pledges, with Hester standing next to them. Hester beings to narrate about how she ended up on there, but without the Chanels.

the House of Grace

Chic and glamorous interior design and lifestyling, behind the scenes of scream queens: the kappa kappa tau house.

Behind the Scenes of Scream Queens: The Kappa Kappa Tau House - I just got into this brilliant cheesy horror show, and the sorority house is absolutely magnificent. Filled with traditional architecture and glamorous girly accents, it's a place that I could definitely find myself calling home.

If I picture a sorority house in my head, Kappa Kappa Tau would be the perfect example. Filled with gorgeous architecture, huge bunches of flowers, and plenty of silky tufted furniture, KKT is like a girly dream. Kappa Kappa Tau is the fictional sorority house from the new TV show ‘Scream Queens’, featuring Emma Roberts, Skyler Samuels, and the wonderful Jamie Lee Curtis. It’s a murder/mystery, filled with special effects so terrible that they’re brilliant. The Kappa house is a monument to the cliche super rich white girl sorority house – except when it’s covered in blood!

I managed to find some pictures from the incredible set, so keep scrolling if you want to see them, and watch the official Scream Queens trailer.

Watch the trailer for Scream Queens here:

The pinnacle of this set is definitely the incredibly stunning two-level closet belonging to the Kappa chapter president, Chanel Oberlin. It is a sanctum, restricted to only the select few. I may just have to add images of it to my dream house plans!

If you like cheesy 80’s horror movies, and super glam decor, Scream Queens is for you. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to find good quality set images, so hopefully you aren’t too disappointed with the ones I managed to round up.

Scream Queens: Where Horror Meets High Gloss Camp

Scream Queens

You might have missed this gem hidden amongst the plethora of horror shows vying for your attention. “ Scream Queens ,” the brainchild of the powerhouse trio Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, isn’t your typical slasher flick. It aired for two seasons on FOX from 2015 to 2016, leaving behind a devoted cult following despite its brief run.

This darkly comedic horror anthology blends murder mysteries, sorority stereotypes, and a healthy dose of absurdity in a way that will leave you both laughing and screaming.

So, settle in and prepare to delve into the world of Wallace University, where fashion clashes with horror, and killer instincts hide beneath designer labels and explore what makes it such a cult classic.

Satire with a Killer Edge: The Premise

“Scream Queens” takes place at Wallace University, where the prestigious Kappa Kappa Tau sorority reigns supreme. Led by the ruthless Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) and her coven of equally entitled minions, Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande), Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd), and Chanel # (Abigail Breslin), Kappa Kappa Tau is a haven for wealth and superficiality.

The Kappa house itself is a monument to excess, with its pink walls, fur-lined furniture, and a never-ending supply of Chanel products. The sorority sisters, obsessed with fashion and social media, communicate in a language of invented insults and high-pitched squeals. This heightened reality sets the stage for the darkly comedic murders that follow, creating a bizarre and strangely delightful juxtaposition.

The arrival of a mysterious killer, dressed in a devilish red devil costume, throws the Kappa Kappa Tau world into disarray. The killer’s motives are shrouded in secrecy, but their targets seem to be chosen specifically to torment the sorority sisters. This sets off a chain reaction of accusations, betrayals, and desperate attempts to survive, all while maintaining a perfectly manicured appearance.

Enter Dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), a sardonic and bold figure who throws a wrench into the killer’s plans – and the sorority’s social hierarchy. With a dry wit and a mysterious past, Dean Munsch challenges the superficiality of Kappa Kappa Tau and becomes an unlikely ally in the fight against the killer. Her presence disrupts the established power dynamics, adding another layer of intrigue to the story.

Beyond the Scream Mask: A Cast of Quirky Characters

The heart of “Scream Queens” lies in its outrageous characters. Emma Roberts delivers a deliciously devious performance as Chanel Oberlin , a fashion-obsessed sorority queen with a killer sense of entitlement (and a vocabulary full of unforgettable insults). The supporting cast is equally captivating. Here’s a closer look at some of the key players:

Abandoned Emma Roberts Horror Film

  • The Entitled Queen Bee: Chanel Oberlin is the undisputed leader of Kappa Kappa Tau. Shallow, self-absorbed, and hilariously oblivious, she’s the embodiment of sorority stereotypes – with a twist. Despite her flaws, Chanel possesses a surprising amount of resourcefulness and a fierce loyalty to those she deems worthy (which is a very small group). Roberts’ portrayal is both hilarious and oddly endearing, making Chanel a character you love to hate.
  • The Heartfelt Heroine: Lea Michele shines as the kind-hearted and resourceful Zayday Williams, a pledge determined to expose the truth behind the murders. Zayday is the voice of reason amidst the chaos, offering a grounded perspective and a strong moral compass. Her intelligence and determination make her a worthy adversary for the killer, and her journey throughout the series is both empowering and relatable.
  • The Sardonic Authority Figure: Jamie Lee Curtis brings a fierce and darkly comedic presence as Dean Munsch. A woman with her own hidden agenda and a penchant for sharp one-liners, Dean Munsch is a force to be reckoned with. She’s not afraid to challenge the status quo and offers a cynical yet strangely insightful perspective on the events unfolding at Wallace University. Curtis’ performance is a highlight of the show, adding a layer of wit and wisdom to the outrageous world of “Scream Queens.”

Each episode introduces new suspects and potential victims, all adding to the show’s unpredictable and often hilarious chaos. From the hapless fraternity boys to the overly enthusiastic hospital staff in season two, the characters in “Scream Queens” are a delightful blend of the bizarre and the strangely relatable.

Horror Tropes Turned Upside Down: A Blend of Genres

While the core of “Scream Queens” revolves around a whodunit murder mystery, the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. It gleefully embraces horror tropes, only to subvert them in unexpected ways. Let’s explore this unique blend of genres:

  • Slasher with a Wink: The deaths are often outrageously gory, but delivered with a wink and a nudge. The show revels in the absurdity of classic slasher films
  • Scream Queens: Where Horror Meets High Gloss Camp (continued) Slasher with a Wink (continued): The deaths are often outrageously gory, but delivered with a wink and a nudge. The show revels in the absurdity of classic slasher films, using excessive blood splatter and elaborate death traps for comedic effect. Imagine a character being impaled by a giant novelty candy cane, or drowned in a vat of Chanel No. 5 – all delivered with a healthy dose of dark humor.
  • Social Commentary Disguised as Camp: Beneath the surface of the outrageous murders and fashion showdowns, “Scream Queens” offers a sly commentary on contemporary society. The show satirizes the obsession with wealth, status, and social media that permeates college culture. It also tackles issues like gender stereotypes, hazing rituals, and the dark side of the medical establishment (especially in season two). However, these themes are never presented in a preachy way. Instead, they’re woven into the narrative with a sharp wit and a dose of absurdity, making the social commentary all the more effective.
  • Pop Culture References Galore: “Scream Queens” is a love letter to horror movies and pop culture in general. The show is filled with references to classic slashers, teen comedies, and even fashion icons. Eagle-eyed viewers will catch homages to films like “Carrie” and “Heathers,” as well as sly nods to current events and celebrity culture. This playful use of references adds another layer of entertainment for viewers who appreciate the show’s clever humor.

Campy and Dark Humor “Scream Queens” may have only lasted two seasons , but it left an undeniable mark on pop culture. The show’s sharp humor, outrageous characters, and clever blend of genres have earned it a devoted fanbase. It’s a show that celebrates the campiness of classic horror films while offering a darkly comedic commentary on contemporary society’s obsession with status and appearances. Whether you’re a horror buff or simply enjoy a good dose of dark humor, “Scream Queens” offers a unique and entertaining experience. So, grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and prepare to be entertained by the killer fashion and deadly high jinks of Wallace University.

Scream Queens

Concerts and tour dates, about scream queens.

scream queens house tour

I took the tour again recently, because I had been told that it had improved since my last visit.

The result?  Yes, it is improved.

They addressed all of my earlier complaints about the  tour guides:

  • I had complained that it was sometimes hard to hear them speak, so they now pass out individual headphones that allow guests to easily hear the guide under all conditions.
  • I had noted that it was strictly a walking tour, and that all that walking could be a bit tiring for some members of the group.  So now they shuttle guests around in golf carts that hold about six people each - making for small, intimate tour groups, and making it easy for the less hardy to easily traverse the lot.
  • I had also complained that the tour guides' training seemed lacking, when it came to knowing the history of the studio.  But if the guide on my latest tour was typical, they have solved that problem as well.  Our guide, Travis, seemed well-versed on both the history and current activities of the studio, as well as being personable & professional.  He couldn't have done a much better job, given the natural limitations of the tour.  They have also outfitted the guides with iPads, which allow them to show guests photos and short videos illustrating the subjects under discussion.

And unless I'm imagining it, the studio lot itself (or at least its southern edge, around the Paseo) seems to look better, more gentrified, than on my previous trips - almost resembling a college campus in spots.

All in all, those are some nice improvements, and make for a much better tour than what I experienced in my earlier visits to the studio.

However, what they couldn't fix are the problems inherent to the Paramount lot itself.

Don't get me wrong, Paramount Studios is one of the most historic studio lots in town (and in fact, the only major studio still officially inside the Hollywood borders).  They made the very first movie to win an Academy Award ("Wings"), and on this lot they have shot such classics as  "The Godfather", "Forrest Gump", "Titanic", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Going My Way", "Sunset Blvd", "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "King Kong", "Braveheart", "Grease" and the "Star Trek" series, to name just a few.

But what it lacks is a traditional big back lot, full of permanent standing outdoor sets.  This was a staple of the major studios back in the Golden Age, filled with faux residential neighborhoods, jungles, mock railroads, Western towns, and Paris streets.  These big back lots were always the most colorful and interesting aspects of any movie studio, at least from the standpoint of a visitor.  MGM had a huge back lot, before they tore it down in the '70s.  Warner Bros. still has theirs.  As does Universal, of course.

Stage 27 - Paramount Studios

To the average tour guest, all sound stages look more or less the same: distinguished only by the large numbers painted on their sides.  When they're in use, they are usually off-limits to tours.  When they are not in use, they are usually empty or filled with folded flats and lighting equipment.  So the guides are mostly limited to driving past these faceless barns, and telling us the history of each one, with tour guests catching an occasional glimpse of their dark, mostly empty interiors through the occasional open door.

( I noticed that they have added plaques to the outside of each sound stage, listing the notable movies & TV shows made inside.  That's great, except that the tour tram usually doesn't get close enough, or stop long enough for guests to read them. )

Stage 19 - Paramount studio

I realize that they can't, in practical terms, let the guests watch while movies are being made.  But they could (and should) show us more of the behind-the-scenes process.  Guests need to see things like the costume department, the prop houses, the recording studios, the dressing rooms, the mini-factories where they build the sets - and it sure wouldn't hurt to show guests at least one movie camera somewhere along the tour.

In short, they keep guests on the outside far too often, looking at exterior walls passing by, and listening to the guide's spiel.  Granted, the general buzz of the studio (its streets cluttered with white production trailers, and buzzing with the bikes and golf carts used to get around the lot) can be interesting in its own right, but a little of that goes a long way.

During my most recent tour, we only went inside twice: once to step into a tiny, empty, corner space in the New York set (that was once used for filming a scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's"), and a second time to visit the empty set of "The Doctors" (a daytime TV talk show that I honestly never heard of).

Still, the tour is indeed better than it used to be, and I have to give them high marks for making an effort. And it remains superior to the Sony studio tour , which is just downright boring.  However, it still doesn't measure up to the Warner Bros. tour , with its huge back lot and more comprehensive tour.

But there are legitimate reasons why someone might opt for the Paramount tour.

Hollywood Sign seen from Paramount Studios

As the photo on the left shows, Paramount is the only major studio where you have a view of the Hollywood Sign from inside the lot. OK, let's get into the details of what you'll see:

The Paramount tour takes a full two hours, and barely scratches the surface of the numerous buildings and sound stages that make up the 65-acre studio.

scream queens house tour

When he does, your first stop will be the Paramount gift shop, where they will give you some time to wander around the small store (where they no doubt hope you will spend your money on one of their t-shirts or coffee mugs, all bearing the familiar Paramount mountain logo).  You can also get a cup of coffee here, and relax for a moment under an umbrella at a patio table just outside.

park

They will then head east along the south edge of the studio lot, along the Paseo, the tiled walkway that runs parallel to Melrose, inside the studio.  On the right (south) edge of this broad walkway is a small strip of lawn, called Marathon Park, that is often also used for filming (due to its convenient location and relatively low cost), and the guide will tell you about a few of those productions.

Then it is on to the iconic Bronson gate (the one featured in "Sunset Blvd", "The Artist", and many other films), where you'll be given the chance to pose for photos near that famous arch.  (It is indeed a very photogenic spot.)

Bronson Gate (Paramount Studios)

This brief history lecture (visually aided by the guide's iPad) seems to replace the short film about Paramount that used to be shown to tour guests before the start of the tour.  That's a mixed blessing, since its hard for a single person, no matter how talented, to compete with a professionally-made documentary film featuring the highlights of the studio's 100-year history.

Forest Gump Bench

Back outside on the Paseo, you'll be shown the original bench from "Forrest Gump", and regaled with stories about how Tom Hanks showed up one day to sit on the bench and pass out chocolates to passersby.

Then it's back on the tram, and through the Bronson gate into the actual working studio.

From here on in, the tours are somewhat played by ear.

scream queens house tour

As an example, on my visit, the guide ran into an unexpected problem.  While taking us to see the New York set (usually the highlight of the tour), he found his way blocked by a giant white tent, erected for some special event (you can rent the New York set for just such events, if you have the $10,000 a day it costs).  As a result, we ended up having to take a roundabout route and ended up seeing only a small section of the large New York set (portions of which mimic several East Coast cities).

scream queens house tour

We got out and were allowed to step inside the empty shell of a small storefront that our guide told us was used as the interior for Alex's boutique, called "Xela" on the TV sitcom "Happy Endings".  Since I never watched the show, that didn't mean much to me.

Breakfast at Tiffany's location

We were shown clips (via the guide's iPad) of a scene shot there from "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

We were also shown a very small alleyway just outside with fake bricks, and with fake sewers that could be rigged to emit steam, to add to that east coast ambiance.

Along the way, there was a lot of talk of the current TV shows filming on the lot: "NCIS", "Glee" "Happy Endings" and "Rizzoli & Isles".  There are also a lot of Nickelodeon kid shows filming at the studio, with names like "Big Time Rush" and "Marvin Marvin", which didn't ring a bell with most of the adults on this tour.

Tourists always hope to see a celebrity on a tour like this, but that is always a longshot chance.

New York set

We also saw a number of little kids spill out of a bus, and were told they were the cast of an upcoming Nickelodeon show called "Haunted Hathaways".  But since the show hasn't aired yet, that didn't mean much.

Likewise, our guide later pointed out a tween girl in a colorful dress, and identified her as Ryan Newman, an up-&-coming star (according to our guide) appearing with Tony Danza on his latest sitcom, "See Dad Run".

But, as expected, the better-known stars of "NCIS", "Glee" or even "Happy Endings" were nowhere in sight.

Lucy Park

Finally, we headed to the southwest corner of the Paramount lot, which used to be RKO Studios, and later DesiLu (before Paramount absorbed it).

Our guide showed us Lucy Park (and an adjacent childcare center built by Lucille Ball for her employees).

Cheers prints

We took a look at (the exterior) of Stage 21, where RKO filmed the original "King Kong", and then it was back to the studio cafe (seen on "Glee" as "Breadsticks"), where we disembarked and dispersed (after more encouragement to spend money in the studio gift shop).

The bottom line?  The studio tour is better than it used to be, and well worth the time, when you're in Hollywood.  But it could still be better.  And the historic Paramount lot, while it has a lot to offer, isn't the ideal movie studio for a tour.

Parking : Parking is available across the street from the famous Bronson gate, in a paid lot at the corner of Bronson & Melrose. (The cost for parking was a flat $10.00 on my last visit.)

Admission Price : $53 for the two-hour guided tour. (No one under age 10 is allowed on the tour.) Advance reservations are required (at 323-956-1777, or online at www.paramountstudiotour.com ).

(They also offer a special  4 1/2 hour VIP tour, once per week – on weekday mornings at 9:30 AM, and weekday afternoons at 1 PM. The cost is $178, and reservations are necessary .)

[ Prices are current as of December 2014.]

You enter through the new double-arch Paramount gate on Melrose, just west of the older Bronson gate. There is a pedestrian walkway on the right (east) side of this entrance. Stop at the booth there.

Hours : Guided tours of the studio are given every day (except some holidays), every half hour from 9:30 AM to 2 PM.  (Weekend schedule may vary.) The tours last two hours.

When Scream Queens is good, it is very, very good, and when it is bad, it is horrid

by Caroline Framke

The Chanels (Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Ariana Grande), creepin’.

Fox is betting big on Scream Queens , which premiered on Tuesday, September 22. The latest show from the team behind Glee and American Horror Story is as close to a mashup of those two series as anyone could possibly get, and Fox has accordingly promoted the hell out of it in the hopes that the stylish show can break out of a bland fall TV season .

There are moments in Scream Queens ’ two-hour premiere that are truly fun, witty, and slick. These moments are so good, in fact, that they make the disappointing parts that much worse.

As is fitting for the epicenter of the Glee / American Horror Story Venn diagram, watching Scream Queens is a uniquely frustrating experience. For every crystalline moment of daring or every perfectly snapped insult, there are several cringe-inducing and downright offensive moments that make you question the taste of everyone involved.

Scream Queens combines the school hierarchies of Glee with the purposeful camp of American Horror Story

scream queens house tour

The Red Devil (dun dun dun).

The show follows Kappa Kappa Tau, an elite sorority that finds itself at the mercy of a serial killer. The terror began 20 years earlier, when one of the Kappas died in childbirth in an upstairs bathtub during a raucous house party. The sisters covered up the death, and now someone is back to make sure they don’t forget it.

In the present day, Chanel No. 1 ( Emma Roberts ) rules over Kappa House and Chanels 2-5 with an iron (and perfectly manicured) fist. The dean of students ( Jamie Lee Curtis ) hates her guts, and therefore mandates that the sorority begin taking any and all pledges that want to join. This includes legacy pledge Grace ( Skyler Samuels ), who is skeptical of all things Greek, even as she rushes (her long-dead mother was a Kappa, see...), and enthusiastic probable psychopath Hester ( Glee ’s Lea Michele ).

Thus, a struggle for power between the lacquered, bubblegum pink mean girls and the try-hard weirdos is born — and then people on all sides start dying.

Scream Queens follows in the footsteps of both meta horror films like Scream and the anthology aspect of American Horror Story. Someone new will die in every episode, and if the show gets another season, co-creator Ryan Murphy has hinted that it will feature an entirely different mystery.

The show struggles to build out its pop art world, which is populated almost exclusively by the human embodiments of bitchy asides. It shows the most flashes of brilliance when it lets itself be a horror movie, or lets its actors rip into a particularly grotesque scene.

Every actor on Scream Queens is giving it everything they’ve got

As was true of Glee and American Horror Story, Scream Queens has one hell of a cast. Jamie Lee Curtis is visibly thrilled to be playing the dean, a ferocious character, especially when she gets to stomp all over collegiate plaything Chad Radwell (a perfectly cocky Glen Powell ).

Nasim Pedrad , late of Saturday Night Live and Mulaney , brings a welcome jolt of goofy energy as one of the sorority’s alums, and when the premiere starts to lag, Niecy Nash busts in as the sorority’s appointed security officer and lets her impeccable comic timing rip.

Despite everyone’s best scene-chewing, however, the prize performances go to two unlikely candidates.

Have you ever seen anything so perfect as this Lea Michele?

As the aggressively bizarre Hester, Lea Michele gets to remind people that she is seriously good at playing unhinged characters. She has chased a more glamorous aesthetic since her early days on Glee , likely to purposefully distance herself from Rachel Berry’s square wardrobe, but her turn as Hester joyfully undoes that work. Hester’s manic mumblings, constantly buzzing energy, and alarming asides make her stand out.

Nick Jonas has perfect bedhead.

The most pleasant surprise, though, goes to Nick Jonas as Radwell’s sneering best friend, Boone. The character is a preppy nightmare who alternates clipped insults with longing glances in Radwell’s direction. The role is an interesting one for Jonas, who occasionally seems to deliberately play to the gay community with vague teases of homoeroticism to gain a passionate fan base.

Even as Boone pines for his straight best friend, though, he is at least an explicitly queer character. Jonas’s confident performance is one the sharpest in the premiere, especially as he delivers his lines through a silken smirk.

Scream Queens can be truly hilarious when it leans into the comedic notes of horror tropes

scream queens house tour

Poor, doomed moppet Ariana Grande.

Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk , and Ian Brennan have built careers on crafting a very particular television aesthetic. Their projects are beautifully shot, very specific to their tastes, and filled with electric moments of character clarity. This combination often makes for pilot episodes that feel more actualized than most series ever get. But as latter seasons of Glee, American Horror Story , and even Nip/Tuck demonstrate, the writers can easily go soaring off the narrative rails when given enough room.

(This way lie spoilers.)

The gruesome, splashy deaths are hands down the best parts of the two-hour premiere. The best, however, is the grisly death of Chanel No. 2 (pop star and notorious doughnut licker Ariana Grande). While the most noteworthy aspect of Grande’s performance prior to her death is the impressive swing of her never-ending ponytail, her murder reveals how good Scream Queens could be with a little careful craft.

Chanel No. 2 gets a suggestive text from an unknown number, and while the messages are menacing enough that we immediately know they’re from the killer, she cocks her adorable head and flirts back. She keeps doing this even when the killer enters her room in his signature red devil costume, and when he texts that he’s “going to kill [her] now,” Chanel blinks at him for a second before texting back: “Wait, whaaaaaaat?”

The entire scene is ridiculous, of course. But it’s also exactly the kind of ridiculous that Scream Queens needs, as it sends up both pop culture and horror conventions with a satisfied wink. It’s encouraging to see Scream Queens trying to balance the wicked and the mocking in a way that echoes those first stellar episodes of Glee so perfectly.

Unfortunately, Scream Queens also indulges in some of Murphy, Brennan, and Falchuk’s least flattering writing tendencies — like pretending that simply having characters engage in aggressive stereotyping and spout off racist jokes counts as heady satire.

For a show that wants to be something fresh and exciting, Scream Queens sure loves its racism!

scream queens house tour

Chanel No. 1, just the worst.

There is no doubt that Emma Roberts’s character (Chanel No. 1) is a horrible person. She berates people for no reason other than to feel powerful, and whenever she sees the faintest opportunity to deliver some appalling racism, she pounces. When giving a tour of the Kappa house, she looks down at the housemaid scrubbing the floors and sniffs, “That obese specimen of human filth scrubbing bulimia vomit out of the carpet is Ms. Bean, but I call her White Mammy because she’s essentially a house slave.”

Yes: “White Mammy.”

Now, the “joke” here is supposed to be that Chanel No. 1 is awful enough to use a term like “white mammy” and find it hilarious. But as the episode progresses and Chanel continues to spew hateful, racist garbage, an alarming truth emerges: This show loves Chanel. Murphy’s direction lingers on her stacked wardrobe, her immaculately assembled outfits, her dead-eyed glare at whomever was foolish enough to cross her. “Yeah, Chanel’s a total racist,” Scream Queens seems to be saying, “but isn’t she spectacular? ”

Well, no. Chanel’s a total racist, and she’s terrible. But the show using her racism as a shortcut to explain the depths of her awful behavior while still finding her delightful is hardly surprising from this team.

After all, many of American Horror Story’s recent storylines (especially on its Coven season) have depended on racism to sell its unsavory characters and amp up their shock value, like Kathy Bates’s repellent slaveowner/serial killer. Murphy’s sitcom The New Normal featured Ellen Barkin as a woman whose primary characteristic was that she almost physically couldn’t stop making racist jokes. Glee had a diverse cast, but that often took the form of serving up tired tropes — the “sassy black girl,” “the silent Asian,” “the fiery Latina” — that rarely grew beyond their most basic descriptors.

But when the central, most lovingly glamorous character of your series is calling the sole black pledge ( Keke Palmer ) a “hood rat,” and running to grab white eyeliner so she can better write epithets on her dark skin, you’re not making any kind of interesting commentary. You’re indulging gross behavior in the guise of calling it out.

And on top of it all, none of these racist jokes are particularly interesting, funny, or even well-delivered. (Show me a teen who would ever say “white mammy” and I will show you a boring figment of Ryan Murphy’s imagination.)

If anything, the most notable thing about the racist text is that it’s all so aggressively unoriginal. We’ve seen it all before — from these very creators! It’s a shame that Murphy, Falchuk, and Brennan continue to lean so heavily on these boring tropes for no discernible reason beyond shock value.

If they applied even an ounce of the creativity they show in the bombastic death scenes to developing villains beyond generic racism generators, Scream Queens would be a force to be reckoned with. For now, it’s a fairly entertaining, but completely confusing, case of whiplash.

Scream Queens airs Tuesdays at 9 pm on Fox.

Scream Queens premiere recap: Pilot and Hell Week

Welcome to Kappa Kappa Tau, the sorority pledges are dying to get into.

If Scream and Mean Girls had unprotected sex atop the detritus from nine rounds of beer pong while “Bad Blood” played in the background, the fruit of their loins would probably look something like Scream Queens — the latest horror story from producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan.

In familiar Murphinian style, Scream Queens delights in poking fun at, well, everything . Some targets worthy (pumpkin spice lattes), some not (deaf people). Whether or not you relish equal-opportunity mockery will likely dictate whether you suck up Scream Queens like some sort of bittersweet cocktail. (Be sure to check out my colleague Melissa Maerz’s review for even more commentary.)

But enough of that: Shall we get to recapping, idiot hookers?

We open in 1995, with a scene ripped from I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant: Sorority House Edition . A Kappa Kappa Tau pledge—under the mistaken impression that she’s hiding nothing more than the Freshman 15 beneath her yellow taffeta — has just given birth in an upstairs bathtub, while a party rages downstairs. Her disgusted sisters won’t deign to help her until they’ve properly jammed to TLC’s “Waterfalls.” (“A lonely mother gazing out of her window…”) Cut to approximately four minutes and 39 seconds later, and Teen Mom has bled out. Oops. The baby seems to be fine though. Note that.

Now we fast-forward to the present, 20 years later. The Kappa house is ruled by Chanel No. 1 (Emma Roberts), with minions Chanel No. 2 (pop tart Ariana Grande), Chanel No. 3 (Billie Lourd), and Chanel No. 5 (Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine no more) nipping at her heels like so many pitiful Maltipoos. All is not well in House Kappa. A new Dean (’70s scream queen and yogurt aficionado Jamie Lee Curtis in a winking turn) has won the academic game of thrones and is out to stymie the sorority. Dean Munsch accuses Chanel of Lannister-ian plottings after a spray tan incident left the previous Chanel No. 1 burned and disfigured last year. (Hydrochloric acid will do that to a person.) It’s worth noting this bronzed flashback offers our first look at the Red Devil — a menacing costumed figure and this series’ Big Bad. But before Dean Munsch can revoke the girls’ charter, in walks Gigi Caldwell (Nasim Pedrad), the national president of Kappa Kappa Tau and a lawyer who graduated from a fourth-tier law school in the Caribbean. Gigi’s efforts ensure the side-boob mixer will go on this year, but she agrees with the Dean that changes are needed.

NEXT: Grace under peer pressure

Now, every Evil Queen needs her Snow White, and this story’s seemingly fair princess is named Grace (Skyler Samuels), an entering freshman. Daddy’s (Oliver Hudson) driving her to college, and as Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” wafts from the stereo speakers, he’s begging his daughter not to rush a sorority. But dead mom was in one, she argues! Why can’t she be in the sisterhood too?! (Yes, dead mom . Is Grace the Bathtub Baby? Only if someone is lying about her age because the math doesn’t quite add up. Thank you, college calculus.) Anyway, Daddy’s pleading does little to stop Grace — in fact, she recruits her roommate Zayday (Keke Palmer) to rush as well, since it might just help fulfill her presidential aspirations. (Okay, sure.)

At a mixer full of Megyn Kelly clones, Dean Munsch and Gigi reveal their plan: Anyone who is currently enrolled at the college can become a Kappa pledge. Which means Neck Brace (Lea Michele), Deaf Taylor Swift (Whitney Meyer), and Candle Vlogger (Breezy Eslin) are all eligible. (But seriously, will someone buy that Nancy Meyers Experience candle for me? I want my apartment to smell like creamy couches.) The Chanels, of course, are livid. Chanel No. 1 harrumphs off to complain to sort-of boyfriend Chad, who’s hitting golf balls at hippies with Gay Brother Boone (Nick Jonas). Chad bottom-lines it for Chanel: He “can’t date a garbage person.” (Though, apparently, he’s not above sleeping with the Dean…)

Chanel hatches her own plan, one she reveals to maid Ms. Bean while at the coffee shop ordering her trenta, five-shot, no-foam, pumpkin spice, half-caf, no-foam latte from barista-investigative-reporter Pete. She’s going to kill Ms. Bean in the deep fryer. Okay, she’s only going to make it look like she killed Ms. Bean in the deep fryer. The oil’s going to be cold, silly. (Question: Do all sorority houses have deep fryers? Did I miss out on four years of deep-fried Oreos by not rushing a sorority? Did I waste the best years of my life!? PLEASE ADVISE.)

Back at the house with all of the Chanels and pledges gathered, No. 1 let’s her scheme unfold. Except… someone has actually turned on the deep fryer, and Ms. Bean is scalded to the point of her flesh dripping off of her face. (I was eating my Massaman curry takeout at this point. Big mistake.) And so, you know, the maid’s dead. Grace wants to nark, but Chanel uses the promise of boyfriends and trips to Cancun to persuade the other pledges to falsely accuse Grace of the crime if she does so. (They were stupid not to hold out for iPads if you ask me…) In such a lovely display of team work and sisterly camaraderie, the girls drag Ms. Bean’s body to the freezer and hide her there.

But Grace is too much of a goody-two-shoes for this s—, so she turns to Pete (whom she met at the coffee house during the Great Pumpkin Spice Latte Kerfuffle of 2015) for advice. But when they go to examine the body, they find the same thing that Chanel and Chad do: It’s missing. Chanel soothes herself with the delusion that Ms. Bean isn’t actually dead. Because that makes total sense.

You know who else is over this s—? Chanel No. 2. She has a potential career as a newscaster to protect, after all! She runs upstairs to pack her things and leave… until she’s interrupted by an ominous text from “Unknown.” It reads: “Brave enough to open the door?” And whether brave or simply dumb, she does it, finding the Red Devil on the other side.

He (she?) texts again: “So you want to dance with the devil.”

She replies: “Maybe.”

The Red Devil dips Chanel No. 2 before texting: “I’m going to kill you now.”

To which she ludicrously responds: “Wait, whaaaat!?!?!”

Good to his/her word, the Red Devil plunges a knife into No. 2’s chest. But she’s not dead! She crawls to her laptop to tweet for her life until she’s mercilessly stabbed again. No. 2 pops up once more — just long enough to hit enter on her 140 characters. (Which looked a lot longer than 140 characters.) Millenials.

NEXT: Heads up

Cue the hazing (which Grace is curiously absent from). It involves the pledges being buried up to their heads in the yard—a “Sexy Gopher Whore Head Challenge.” But, as you could have probably predicted, it goes horribly awry when the Red Devil takes a spin on a lawnmower decapitating Deaf Taylor Swift. Wielding some very poor logic, Dean Munsch and Gigi convince the girls to stay in the Kappa house until the murder is sorted out. At least they won’t be there without protection! Enter security guard Denise Hemphill (Niecy Nash). Here’s her firm’s three-step plan the girls must follow to stay safe:

1. If you’re in danger, scream Denise Hemphill’s name.

2. If you don’t get a response from Denise Hemphill, it’s because she’s not there. So call 1-866-KLJ-0199.

3. If no one answers, get the hell out of there.

All in all, pretty straightforward. Grace isn’t content to just sit around, though, so she and Pete go back to investigating, this time splitting up. Grace breaks into the house’s creepy closet room—where Chanel finds her and tells her the legend of the Bathtub Baby. And its conclusion is a juicy one: Dean Munsch supposedly covered up the death (ostensibly with Bean’s help). Grace helpfully muses that there must be some connection between that death 20 years ago and the recent lethal incidents. Bound for Valedictorian, that one.

Meanwhile, Pete breaks into the Dean’s office and is bludgeoned (but not killed) by the Red Devil. He’s left dangling outside the administration building wearing a sign that reads: “MYOB.” (“Mind Your Business” for you olds out there. Which includes me.)

Grace and Pete reconvene in his dorm room to compare notes, and what does Grace find in his closet?! A Red Devil costume . What. I mean. He’s the mascot. C’moooooon. (This is a total red herring, right?) Grace immediately asks how old Pete is. He’s just about to turn 20. The same age as the Bathtub Baby.

But there’s not much time for theorizing because the Red Devil strikes again while the pledges are doing mayo shots in their underwear. You see, Chanel went upstairs to fetch something from her room, where she reportedly (REPORTEDLY), was nearly thrown from the window by the serial killer. The girls race up after her to find out what’s waiting for them. (Denise wisely stays put downstairs). And, honestly, if you ask me (which I guess you are if you’re reading this recap), their reaction (gasps, cries, SCREAMS) to the words “Sluts Will Die” scrawled in red paint in Chanel’s bedroom, is a touch dramatic. (Transfer to Juilliard if you’re into theatrics.)

Actually, speaking of institutions where teens sing and dance (Camp Rock), let’s turn our attention to Nick Jonas/Boone because he’s the Red Devil’s next victim. Sort of. Boone was planning to out himself and then join up with KKT, but his dreams are dashed when, after a completely gratuitous workout scene (I’m not complaining), he comes face to face with the masked murder and ends up flayed and splayed atop the frat’s dining room table. But before you break out into a rousing chorus of “This Is Our Song” —Boone’s not dead! The episode’s final twist is that the Red Devil owns a morgue (I guess?!), and he/she opens a drawer to reveal a very alive Boone. So they’re… in cahoots?

Prime Suspects : Each week I’ll review the facts, à la Jerry Orbach in Law and Order , and pick my prime suspects for the murders. We’re clearly looking at a team here, right? Boone and someone else? (A trio theory feels a bit advanced at this point.) Anyway, I’m going to say Boone… and Chanel No. 1. We already know she’s capable of killing right?

Until next week, leave your thoughts and theories in the comments!

Video: Take A Tour Of The Original ‘Scream’ House

scream movie house

It’s always nice to see an iconic film location that’s still standing. This obviously includes Stu Macher’s house from Scream , which was used heavily during the movie’s third act. What’s more, both the interiors and exteriors for the house were taken from the same real-life building, located in Tomales, California. If that’s not enough, the iconic structure mostly looks the same all these years later. Now YouTube channel Dead Meat has taken the opportunity to give a tour of the fan-favorite Scream house.

The tour, which you can see below, is led by both James and Chelsea from the Dead Meat channel. The two go over all of the iconic spots in the house that were shown in the classic movie , and it’s such a great treat for fans. After all, many movies have locations that are built with stages or were torn down after a certain amount of time. As such, it really is great to see that Stu Macher’s iconic house from Scream still stands and looks the way it did in 1996.

Here’s the video:

Meanwhile, if fans are still anxious for more Scream content, there is a new movie on the way this month. And what’s also great about this new film, is that it also uses Stu Macher’s house from the original Scream ! While plot details are scarce, early reviews for the film have been quite positive . As such, it’s presumable that the film does great justice to this beloved shooting location.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the new Scream , taking over for the late Wes Craven who directed the original four films. James Vanderbilt wrote the script with Guy Busick. Original  Scream  screenwriter Kevin Williamson is executive producing alongside Chad Villella. Project X Entertainment’s James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are serving as producers on the film.

The cast for  Scream  includes returning cast members David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Marley Shelton, and Roger L. Jackson. The new cast members include Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Sonia Ben Ammar and Kyle Gallner.

Scream  is currently scheduled to hit theaters on January 14, 2022.

The Best Modern Day Scream Queens

Mia Goth smiles wide

In the world of horror, it's not uncommon for an actress to become a recurring fixture of the genre and find herself dubbed a "scream queen" by genre aficionados. Going back to the 1930s when Fay Wray first screamed her way through "King Kong," the term "scream queen" can apply to any actress who's found success in horror with one or more roles (via Slate ). It can also refer to those who play the oft-recurring final girl that survives at the end or — in many cases — the film's main antagonist. That's not to say that all of these performers are solely defined by horror, but certainly, a number of them have seen great success through the genre.

Horror has long been a space that has showcased female characters not typically seen on screen, but in recent years, the door has been flung wide open as to what types of women are represented within the vast world of great horror cinema . From portraying evil doppelgängers to homicidal mothers to killer babysitters to ghostly apparitions, these women have cast a wide and twisted net of different horror creations and so, contributed to the long lineage of scream queens before them. These are the actresses who have cemented themselves as modern day scream queens.

Warning: spoilers below

Lupita Nyong'o

Red's holds hands to her face

Ever since her breakthrough performance in "12 Years A Slave," Lupita Nyong'o has made quite the name for herself thanks to her ability to completely immerse herself in her roles, which makes her perfect for horror-tinted characters. For many, the first chance to see her put these skills to the test in the genre was in Jordan Peele's 2019 sophomore outing "Us" where she played not one, but two different roles. In the film, Nyong'o plays the protagonist Adelaide and the antagonist of her tethered doppelgänger Red.

Playing double roles is no small feat and Nyong'o handles both masterfully, imbuing both characters with unique traits. When acting as Red, she opts to play the character with a disturbingly raspy voice, which only adds to the level of unease when she's on screen. What adds to the impressive nature of the dual performances is the film's twist ending.

It's revealed that Adelaide is actually a tethered person, who forcibly switched places with Red back when they were kids. This explains why, when enraged or in the midst of murder, Adelaide makes horrific animal-like sounds — it's her true tethered nature emerging. Little details like that make this performance a cut above the rest and it's a true tour de force of acting.  Critics agreed that it's a top-notch performance and for critics and fans alike, it's one that has solidified Nyong'o as a fixture of the horror genre.

Samara Weaving

Samara Weaving holds up a gun

Samara Weaving's rise to prominence has been nothing short of meteoric, starting off as a cast member in the Australian soap opera "Home and Away." She left down under to make the jump to American productions and one of her first noteworthy ones was a recurring part in the first season of "Ash vs Evil Dead" in 2015 (via IMDb ).

In 2017, Weaving appeared in Joe Lynch's "Mayhem" and McG's "The Babysitter," two films that showcase her panache for the genre. While Weaving plays a protagonist in "Mayhem," she takes on an antagonist role in "The Babysitter." In each case, she shows an impressive command over dark humor, which is an essential element of horror.  Dread Central called Weaving "your new favorite genre it girl" in their review of "The Babysitter," noting how effortlessly she "navigates emotions that range from final girl to black magic villain as a genre veteran."

Weaving followed this up with her lead performance in 2019's "Ready or Not," which snagged her more mainstream attention. From there, Weaving has become a staple of genre films — appearing in the likes of 2020's "The Babysitter: Killer Queen," where she reprises her role as Bee. Additionally, she got to play the hyper violent Nix in Jason Lei Howden's "Guns Akimbo" in 2019, yet another wild role Weaving devoured with gusto.

Weaving has done an impressive amount of work in a short period of time that has shown her versatility and dark humor, all of which have earned her the moniker of a modern day scream queen.

Katharine Isabelle

Half-werewolf Ginger looks at boy

Katharine Isabelle has been making waves in horror since the late '90s and early '00s. Most notably, Isabelle was co-lead alongside Emily Perkins in the 2000 Canadian werewolf classic "Ginger Snaps."

"Ginger Snaps" introduces us to the death-obsessed Fitzgerald sisters — Ginger (Isabell) and Brigitte (Perkins) — who've made a pact to leave the suburbs or die together before hitting puberty. Things get complicated when on the night of her first period, Ginger is violently attacked by a bloodthirsty werewolf. Soon enough, Ginger begins transforming into a werewolf herself, piling up several bodies along the way and driving a wedge between her and Brigitte.

The film was only a modest box office hit upon its release, but it received ample praise for its two leads and its feminist themes, as publications like Morbidly Beautiful have noted it is one of the films that paved the way for modern feminist horror. Isabelle proved so popular that she reprised her role as Ginger in the "Ginger Snaps" sequel and prequel that were filmed back-to-back.

In the years since, Isabelle's presence in horror and gonzo genre films has not wavered. Most notably, she plays the lead role of Mary Mason in "American Mary," directed by the Soska Sisters. Here, she is a med student-turned-underground-surgeon, who makes a living by specializing in unorthodox body alteration and augmentation. Despite hating blood in real life (via The Daily Record ), Isabelle has been all too happy to embrace her status as a scream queen.

Florence Pugh

Dani smiles in flower crown

Through her natural charm, dry humor, and penchant for emotionally driven characters, Florence Pugh has emerged as a top-tier performer after building a name for herself in the 2010s in films like "The Falling" and "Lady Macbeth."

However, her true arrival as a star came in 2019 when Pugh hit it big thanks to three films: "Little Women," "Fighting With My Family," and "Midsommar." The latter of these was helmed by Ari Aster, who rose to prominence with his 2018 smash debut horror film "Hereditary."

"Midsommar" centers on Dani, who has recently lost her mother, father, and sister in a horrible tragedy. Dani is reeling from the loss and she isn't helped by her emotionally dismissive boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor). In an attempt to get her mind off things, she opts to travel to Sweden for a midsummer celebration at a commune frequented by Christian's friend Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren). However, after some disturbing incidents occur, it soon becomes clear that the commune's intentions are quite sinister, and Dani must decide if she wants to stay in or leave this community.

Pugh's performance is awe-inspiring, as she injects the role with acute portrayals of both PTSD and exacerbated emotional bandwidth. Many critics agreed, with Bloody Disgusting declaring that the best moments of "Midsommar" are ones that highlight "the raw, soulful energy of Florence Pugh's performance."

Pugh continues to take roles in and outside the genre but luckily for horror fans, 2022 sees her lend her scream queen talents to another film with a disturbing premise: Olivia Wilde's thriller "Don't Worry Darling."

Pearl stares ahead with smeared makeup

If you want to talk about performers who have made a sizable splash in modern horror, look no further than Mia Goth. Goth's career began with a bang, as she made her film debut in Lars von Trier's hyper-sexual drama "Nymphomaniac." She followed this up with must-see roles in other thriller and horror projects, including "The Survivalist," "A Cure For Wellness" and the 2018 remake of "Suspiria."

Her trek into the world of horror was fully cemented when she teamed up with director Ti West for his 2022 film "X." The film is a true proving ground for Goth as — much like Lupita Nyong'o — she pulls double duty in "X," where she plays both Maxine and Pearl. Goth plays both parts to perfection, aided by some solid old age makeup and vocal alterations. "X" was a hit with both critics and audiences  and Peter Travers even noted for Rolling Stone that Goth "ups her game substantially here and demonstrates why the title of 'scream queen' should be considered an honor."

Fans didn't have to wait too long to see Goth back in action since "Pearl," the prequel to "X," came out just a few months later in September 2022. Much like "X," the film opened to stellar reviews and ample praise was once again bestowed on Goth for her disturbing performance. Goth and West will reunite one more time to close out the "X" trilogy with "MaXXXine" in 2023 (via Deadline ).

Jenna Ortega

Wednesday looks ahead seriously

Despite her young age, Jenna Ortega has already carved out a successful niche for herself in the world of horror. Ortega, like many rising young actors, got her first big break through the Disney Channel, as she portrayed Harley Diaz on "Stuck in the Middle" (via IMDb ). Following her run under the Disney banner, Ortega transitioned into more mature content, particularly in the horror and thriller spaces.

Ortega's first forays into horror-related projects were as Ellie in Season 2 of Netflix's "You" and a starring turn alongside fellow scream queen Samara Weaving in 2020's "The Babysitter: Killer Queen." In both roles, Ortega showcases her often catty but charming delivery, and she easily stands shoulder to shoulder with more seasoned performers.

Ortega kicked off 2022 with a scream, as she played the lead in "Scream," and she furthered her ascent as a horror queen later in the year with an appearance alongside Mia Goth in Ti West's "X." Ortega's streak of horror-related roles continues with her taking on the titular role of Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton's Netflix series "Wednesday," set to be released in November 2022 (via Variety ). It'll take a lot to surpass Christina Ricci's iconic portrayal but judging by the trailer  and her already established scream queen status, Ortega looks to be more than up to the task.

Max with her headphones on her neck

From Finn Wolfhart to Millie Bobby Brown, the series "Stranger Things" has helped launch many new faces into the pop cultural stratosphere, including Sadie Sink. Beginning her career in theater, Sink gradually transitioned into on-screen roles of increasing importance, including NBC's "American Odyssey" and the film "Chuck."

However, her major claim to fame arrived in 2016, when she was cast as Max Mayfield in "Stranger Things" Season 2. Max has quickly become a fan favorite, especially following Season 4, which contains some of Sink's best work to date. While the editing and effects work during the "Running Up That Hill" sequence is truly stellar, the sequence is boosted significantly by her impressive performance.

Sink's presence in Netflix-helmed horror increased via her appearance in the "Fear Street" trilogy in 2021. Sink has a tremendous grasp on handling both comedy and legitimately emotional scenes, especially when it comes to the world of horror, which makes her one an exciting modern scream queen to watch.

Vera Farmiga

Lorraine Warren examining a music box

The horror genre is far from Vera Farmiga's only claim to fame, as she's truly done some stellar work outside of it as well. Her roles in "Down to the Bone" and "Up in the Air" helped to launch her into the mainstream while garnering ample critical acclaim along the way. Farmiga's horror debut arrived in 2009, when she took on the role of Kate Coleman in "Orphan." Playing opposite a child who's playing an adult playing a child is no small feat, but Farmiga capably rises to the challenge.

In 2013, Farmiga further cemented her status as a major force in horror with two roles: Norma Bates in "Bates Motel" and Lorraine Warren in "The Conjuring." The smash box office success  and critical acclaim of "The Conjuring" spawned a franchise that has become a staple of the modern horror genre and Farmiga's chemistry with her co-lead Patrick Wilson is a big reason that people have latched onto this film series with such ferocity.

Additionally, throughout its five-season run, "Bates Motel" earned Farmiga ample praise for her portrayal of Norman Bates' mother, with publications like The Daily Beast singling out the actress' talent in delivering a "fully thought-through, utterly distinctive performance" from the jump. You can always count on Farmiga to bring her A-game when on-screen and her skill at adding depth and surprising layers to characters makes her one of the best scream queens around.

Victoria Pedretti

Love cocks head smiles

Oftentimes, screen queens find themselves playing either the victim or the antagonist, which are both essential roles in any horror story, but some actresses like Victoria Pedretti can move between the two with ease. Pedretti's first major stop on her rise to horror queendom came through Mike Flanagan's critically acclaimed Netflix adaptation of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House."

Playing the role of Eleanor "Nell" Crain Vance in the miniseries, Pedretti gives a performance that's nothing short of utterly heartbreaking, as her character is the lynchpin of the present day events in the show. In particular, Pedretti stands out in the fifth episode, which centers around Nell, and many — like The A.V. Club and Strange Harbors — agreed that it's the best episode of the series, in large part because of Pedretti's work.

Pedretti proceeded to one-up this breakout performance with her portrayal of Love Quinn on Seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix's "You." According to an interview with Byrdie , Pedretti originally auditioned for the role of Guinevere Beck and although she didn't get the part, she left enough of an impression for the directors to call her back.

Luckily, Pedretti can showcase her talents as both sympathetic protagonist and violent antagonist in this role, as Love is revealed to be as psychotic and murderous as violent stalker Joe (Penn Badgley). Considering her stellar talents, it's no surprise that horror fans have embraced Pedretti with open arms as a scream queen who can do it all.

Anya Taylor-Joy

Thomasin mouth open bloody neck

It's inevitable that you become a scream queen when your breakout role arrives with an acclaimed horror release, such is the case with Anya Taylor-Joy. Joy received her big break with Robert Eggers' debut film "The Witch." Set in the 1600s, a banished Puritan family find themselves in the crosshairs of a witches' coven lurking in the nearby woods. After the family's infant son is taken by the witches, teenage daughter Thomasin (Taylor-Joy) finds herself an unexpected target of her parents' grief and anger and by the end, is enticed by the promise of "living deliciously." Joy's performance was a grand debut that rightfully earned near-universal praise from critics  with David Sims of The Atlantic calling Taylor-Joy "a revelation as Thomasin."

In the years since her surreal on-screen debut, Taylor-Joy has lent her talents out to a slew of different horror films like M. Night Shyamalan's "Split" and Sergio G. Sánchez's "Marrowbone." Her status as a genre regular was furthered with her role as Sandie in Edgar Wright's 2021 horror release "Last Night in Soho." Taylor-Joy brings her now-established charm and humor to the role with an added dash of menace for good measure. With projects like "The Queen's Gambit" under her belt as well, it's fair to say the future looks bright for scream queen Anya Taylor-Joy.

Jessica Rothe

Giant baby mask behind surprised woman

First coined by Carol J. Clover in her 1992 seminal text Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, the trope of the "final girl" has been retooled and reconfigured since its emergence in the '70s with movies like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (via Horror Obsessive ). From Ellen Ripley to Laurie Strode, horror films have frequently been a space for tenacious and resourceful female protagonists. Horror can be a frequently misogynistic genre, so there's been a great effort to fix it for several decades and the modern era has seen an uptick in pro-feminine and feminist narratives.

One performer who's joined the pantheon of great final girls is Jessica Rothe thanks to her work in the "Happy Death Day" franchise. The film centers around Theresa "Tree" Gelbman (Rothe), a vain college student who's stuck on a loop of reliving the same day — her birthday — over and over. Every time she wakes up, an assailant in a baby mask kills her in a new way and place.

Given this "Groundhog Day" setup, the film boasts as much comedy as it does horror, which Rothe provides in spades. From her various reactions to her day resetting to some tender emotional moments, much of the film's charm rests on her shoulders. Rothe reprises the role in "Happy Death Day 2U" and leans way more into the comedy, which results in some morbid yet effective laughs and proves why she's a scream (comedy) queen.

Maika Monroe

Jay floating in a swimming pool

If you're going to make a splash, you might as well do it in a film that'll have everyone talking upon its release. David Robert Mitchell's 2014 critically loved "It Follows" has one of the strangest setups for a horror film around. An evil shapeshifting entity can take the form of any person and it perpetually stalks people until it causes their death. The entity is passed from person to person by sexual intercourse, once you get it, no one else can see it, and yes, it's as weird as you think it is. Effective allegories about sexually transmitted infections and sexual vulnerability aside, the film is genuinely frightening, as it boasts solid suspense and several impressive scares.

A big reason for the movie's success is Maika Monroe in the lead role as Jaime "Jay" Height. Jay is the latest target of this mysterious entity, who struggles to survive its relentless pursuit. Her performance in "It Follows" was so effective that it garnered her award recognition, including an Empire Award nomination (via IMDb ).

That same year, Monroe appeared in another horror outing with a role in Adam Wingard's "The Guest." Monroe possesses a healthy mix of vulnerability and snide charm that makes for well-rounded characters. Monroe's position as a scream queen continues to grow, as she can be seen in Chloe Okuno's 2022 psychological thriller "Watcher," which has gotten critical acclaim, with the Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus noting that the film is elevated by "Maika Monroe's terrific work in the leading role."

Sarah Paulson

Paulson screaming

While people may know Sarah Paulson for her more dramatic work in movies like "Carol" and "12 Years a Slave," Paulson has made some serious strides in the world of horror. From the big screen to television, Paulson has never been a stranger to tales of madmen, monsters and mental psychosis. Her biggest foothold in the world of horror came from several roles on Ryan Murphy's acclaimed television series "American Horror Story."

Since each season of the show revolves around a different theme and setting, Paulson has had ample time to showcase her range. Be it as a witch in Season 3 a.k.a. "Coven" or as a two-headed woman in Season 4 a.k.a. "Freakshow," she never once phones it in. Alongside Evan Peters and Jessica Lange, Paulson has become one of the "American Horror Story" franchise's defining performers and a certifiable scream queen.

In films, Paulson brings a healthy dose of mental psychosis to her role as Diane Sherman in Aneesh Chaganty's "Run." Diane is an overprotective and unstable mother, who goes to extreme lengths to keep her physically disabled daughter Chloe cut off from the world. Paulson received solid praise from critics for her portrayal of the character, with Zoe Rose Bryant writing for Loud and Clear Reviews that "Paulson is a terrifically terrifying treat" in the film.

Betty Gabriel

Georgina smiles and cries

In terms of frequency, Betty Gabriel has racked up an impressive amount of horror roles in a short time frame. Following a musical theater career and a role in the 2011 short film "In Memoriam," Gabriel scored recurring roles on shows like "Westworld" (via IMDb ). In 2016, Gabriel accrued more attention thanks to her role as Laney Rucker a.k.a. La Pequeña Muerte in the Blumhouse-produced "The Purge: Election Year."

Following this, Gabriel landed her biggest role yet as Georgina in Jordan Peele's debut film "Get Out." Her performance as a woman with another person's brain in the driver's seat is effectively disturbing, and it's bolstered by the research Gabriel did for the role like watching "The Bride of Frankenstein" and TED Talks about the feeling of being trapped in your own body (via IndieWire ).

The horror genre has been a frequent venue for Gabriel to showcase her acting prowess. She's appeared in a number of films by Blumhouse, the horror production powerhouse, and can be seen in their movies "Unfriended: Dark Web" and "Upgrade." Gabriel spoke to IndieWire about her attraction to working in horror, saying, "I guess I have an affinity towards darkness, the dark side." Luckily, this scream queen brings that affinity and her quality performances to horror films, even if some of them are subpar.

Toni Collette

Annie cries mouth open

Australian native Toni Collette found success across the ocean thanks to in the likes of "Muriel's Wedding" and "Lilian's Story." However, it wasn't until 1999 when she snagged her true breakout role in M. Night Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense."

Colette plays Lynn Sear, the mother of Cole (Haley Joel Osment), a little boy who possesses the ability to communicate with the dead. Her performance was so well received that it even garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress (via IMDb ). This catapulted Collette into widespread success and garnered her increasingly bigger film and television roles in different genres, but it was another horror film in 2018 that gave Collette one of the most memorable roles of her career to date.

When it comes to modern horror classics, one title that's made quite a few lists is Ari Aster's "Hereditary." At the center of everything is Collete's character Annie, a mother dealing with some intense childhood baggage courtesy of her own controlling mother. With a premise heavily built around the concept of grief, Collette delivers several powerhouse moments, including one of cinema's most intense dinner scenes.  With her stamp on now two classics of the genre, we can only imagine what this scream queen will take on next in horror.

Jessie Buckley

Harper Marlowe picks fruit off tree

Starting off her career in the world of television, it didn't take too long for Jessie Buckley to transition to movies as well. Her first major film role was in Michael Pearce's psychological thriller "Beast," where Buckley plays Moll, a girl who ends up dating an alleged murderer. Much like the film itself, her performance is multilayered, leaving the viewer to question her stability just as much as you do that of her love interest Pascal (Johnny Flynn).

Buckley continued this trend of throwing herself into films with bizarre themes and disturbing visuals with Alex Garland's 2022 feature "Men." Harper Marlowe (Buckley) is still reeling from her husband's recent suicide and takes a much needed vacation in a small English village. She soon finds, however, that she is being stalked by what appears to be a disheveled naked man. With its bizarre mix of themes and surreal visuals, the film provides Buckley a chance to run a wide gamut of impressively displayed emotions.

Additionally, her work in projects such as Charlie Kaufman's "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" has solidified her affinity for roles in surreal films. Time can only tell what's next for Jessie Buckley, but if her resume so far is any indication, it just might melt our brains.

Naomi Watts

Rachel Keller shocked open mouth

Australian actress Naomi Watts is no stranger to the horror genre, with several of her most memorable roles resulting from disturbing films. Following her arrival in the United States, a young Watts landed her first major international role in David Lynch's 2001 classic mystery/thriller "Mulholland Drive." Watts plays the film's protagonist, aspiring actress Betty Elms, but unlike her on-screen counterpart, she met a less destructive ending since "Mulholland Drive" helped thrust Watts into the limelight.

Just a year later, Watts got to showcase her scream queen skills in the role that most horror fans know her for: Rachel in the 2002 American remake of "The Ring." Rachel is a Seattle journalist, who embarks on a journey to break the story on a cursed videotape that kills you in seven days. Following this, Watts appeared in more horror and psychological thrillers like "Funny Games" and "Dream House." Most recently, Watts stepped into the role of the titular mother in the English-language remake of "Goodnight Mommy," which was released in 2022.

Scream (1996): Where Was the Movie Filmed?

of Scream (1996): Where Was the Movie Filmed?

Directed by Wes Craven, ‘Scream’ is a 1996 classic slasher film that spawned a horror-thriller franchise spanning five films at last count. The original ‘Scream,’ the very first in the series, centers around Sydney, a teenager who recently lost her mother to a brutal murder. A year after her mother is killed, more murders start to occur around Sydney, and she begins to wonder if the killings are all connected.

Things take a deadly turn when Sydney’s friends start receiving creepy phone calls from a murderous stranger in a mask who asks each person before killing them, “What’s your favorite scary movie?”. When the serial killer finally calls Sydney, she fights with all her might to not become just another one of the psycho killer’s victims. If you want to know where ‘Scream’ was filmed, you’re in the right place.

Scream Filming Locations

Starring David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore, and Neve Campbell, the thriller is quite popular for having the viewers at the edge of your seat in nervous anticipation. The iconic slasher ‘Scream’ has been filmed entirely in California. Here are the specific locations where scenes were shot in 1996!

Santa Rosa, California

The location for Sydney’s house is 1820 Calistoga Road, Santa Rosa, while the video store where Randy is employed is at Bradley Video – 3080 Marlow Road. The store where Sydney and a friend buy food for Stu’s house party is located at Pacific Market, 1465 Town & Country Drive. Scenes inside Tatum’s house were shot at 824 McDonald Avenue.

The Woodsboro High School (that Sydney and her friends attend) is actually the Sonoma Community Center, situated at 276 E. Napa Street. Cravens really wanted to film the school scenes at the Santa Rosa High School.

However, the school board rejected their filming request because the community raised strong objections to a film that had such brutal violence against kids. So the makers of the film shot the school scenes at the Sonoma Community Center instead.

Healdsburg, California

The Woodsboro Town Square, a prominent location in the film, is Healdsburg Plaza, located at Matheson Street & Center Street. The Woodsboro Police Department building is at 126 Matheson Street in Healdsburg.

21, North Wales

Drag Queen Actavia wearing all leather with a red choker and red and black hair with pink smoke surrounding her

Pronouns out of drag: He/Him

Pronouns in drag: She/Her

Tell us about yourself!

Hello! I’m Actavia, I am 21 years old, and I'm from a tiny little town in North Wales called Bala but I now live in Manchester. Bring on the Welsh!

How does it feel to be a Ru girl?

This is literally like a dream come true. It's such a cliché thing to say but I just can’t believe it’s real and that I’m here.

How long have you been doing drag?

I quickly became obsessed with all things drag around five years ago when I was 16 years old however, being from such a small town, drag was never something that was around me. After discovering Drag Race, everything just clicked! I’ve always loved performing and being on stage so I knew drag was for me and here I am!

How would you describe your drag?

I would describe myself as a bit of a chameleon, and I always like to add a villainess look to my drag aesthetic but I’m really approachable – I promise!

What can we expect to see at an Actavia show?

I come alive on stage. If you were to come to an Actavia show, you would see a blend of camp, dancing, energy, and a bit of stupidity. My shows are high energy and you would definitely be out of breath just watching me.

What’s the drag scene like in your hometown of Bala?

It's honestly tiny. I always say the drag scene there is absolutely immaculate - because I AM the drag scene there! There is no other drag queen in my town, as far as I'm aware!

What are you most looking forward to in the competition?

I’m a dancer so I love anything where I can move my legs. I’m so excited to do anything that’s thrown at me in this competition and grab it by the horns!

Would you say you’re competitive?

I wouldn’t say I’m competitive, but I do enter a lot of competitions and I am now on the biggest drag competition now so actually… I guess you could say I am!

What would it mean to you to win it?

To be crowned as the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar would just be the ultimate validation not only for myself, for all the hard work I’ve put into my drag over the years. It would just mean the world!

Chanel O’Conor

25, scotland.

Drag Queen Chanel O'Conor wearing a black corset and black feathered neglige with her arms outstretched looking to the camera. Green smoke effect surrounding her

Hello! My name is Chanel O'Conor, I'm 25 and I’m originally from the Isle of Bute in Scotland.

We hear you’re a talented seamstress?

I make all of my own clothes, and I’ve created looks for other queens too. In fact, a lot of my work has already featured on the show as I've made outfits for Drag Race UK Series two winner Lawrence Chaney and for various other queens. I’m so proud of that, but it’s now time for me. I want to show off all of my creations ON ME - and I want to win!

I discovered drag as a child watching comedy specials that starred iconic drag characters such as Lily Savage and Dame Edna. From watching these legends, I became obsessed and fell completely in love with drag. Growing up, I used to escape the island for a drama class on the mainland every Saturday, which is where I discovered my true love for experimenting with character creation. From that, I took a drag show to the Edinburgh Fringe and it just snowballed from there - I’ve now been doing drag for eight years!

How did you create the persona of Chanel?

I created the character of Chanel O’Conor as a way for me to ‘play pretend’ in a world I could never be in - being rich, being famous and being a natural ginger. I mixed my love for powerful women and fabulous fashions to create a baby version of Chanel O’Conor – someone who is pure luxury, Austrian royalty twice removed and sips champagne in her private submarine in Lake Como!

What are you most excited for?

I’m so excited to meet Ru and cannot wait to see her up close and see her fabulous outfits. I feel like I’m going to learn so much from Ru – she is an icon!

Are there any challenges you are worried about?

I am so nervous for any dance challenges. I’m not typically a dancer. I’m a ‘stand by the bar, buy a drink on my husband’s credit card and be politely escorted to the VIP area’ kind of dancer!

What would it mean to you to win the competition?

I’ve worked so hard and put so much effort into my drag that to win the Drag Race UK crown would be truly incredible. To bring it home for Scotland, one more time would be amazing. Give me the crown baby!

23, Belfast

Drag Queen Charra Tea wearing a red fitted dress with huge collar piece that puffs out and has diamantes dangling from it. She's got her hand on her hip and mouth open widely. Blue smoke surrounds her with an image of her in the smoke to the left

Introduce yourself!

Hello world! My name is Charra Tea, I'm 23 and I am from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Woo!

I feel like I'm on a prank show and any minute now, someone's going to pop up and say, “Just joking!”. I’m so excited! Meeting RuPaul for the first time is going to be so surreal. I'm obsessed and I’m hoping she can understand this gorgeous Belfast accent.

What inspires your drag?

I was an artsy kid growing up and I've always been drawn to big, bold, bright colours which I incorporate into my drag. Some people call it tacky, but I love that and I embrace the tacky!

What would you see at a typical Charra Tea show?

If you were to come to a Charra Tea show, expect to see a pop culture parrot. I love incorporating random niche quotes in my shows from all the UK pop culture legends - Gemma Collins, Kim Woodburn, Nadine Coyle - I love them all!

How did you get into drag?

My drag aspirations began after I watched the movie Hairspray. I thought to myself I want to do that and now I’ve been doing drag for around five years! I love the transformation and confidence that drag gives me.

What’s the drag scene in Belfast like?

There’s not a massive drag scene in Belfast, but in our little scene is expanding with something for everyone. There are so many amazing drag queens in the area, I'm so proud to represent Belfast on Drag Race UK.

What are you most excited about?

I’m definitely not a seamstress, but I can put an outfit together. If it stays on, that’s another story! I've also been in a few school plays in my time, so I think I might have the acting and comedy challenges sorted! This is the Olympics of drag so I'm just excited for everything! I’m especially excited to show people that even a little shy child like me can grow up to fulfil my dream!

How competitive are you?

I’m very competitive. I always like to be the best. I've only competed a few times in drag, and only won once, so hopefully I can win again. Fingers crossed!

What would it mean to be the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar?

To win Drag Race UK would be incredible. Who goes on Drag Race and doesn't want to win? I’m fun, fresh, I’m not afraid to be tacky and be myself and I love primary colours. I want that crown!

Drag Queen Dita garbo wearing teal and black lacy underwear and corset with a teal tulle material draped on her shoulders. Her hand is up and she's looking into the camera. Red smoke surrounding her with an image of her in the background in the smoke

Pronouns out of drag: They/Them

I’m Dita Garbo, I’m 48 years young from the sunny seaside town of Folkestone in Kent, and I’m so excited to be putting Folkestone on the map!

I serve burlesque Hollywood glamour. My influences are burlesque icon Dita Von Teese and Hollywood starlet, Greta Garbo. Hence my name – Dita Garbo. I like to say I’m the burlesque lovechild of Dita Von Teese and Greta Garbo! But I can switch it up if I need to keep up with the kids!

I can jump, split, kick, turn, shablam, drop, turn, backflip, split again… but then I might need some help getting up!

You are the oldest contestant we’ve had on Drag Race UK. How will you use that to your advantage in the competition?

The nice thing about being older is that you come to the competition with a lot of wisdom. If the younger queens need it, I’ll give them some motherly love and advice, but if they annoy me, I'll tell them!

How did you start in drag?

I first got into drag in Madrid, Spain years ago, where I was in an androgynous drag group called  Lujuria, which means 'lust’ in Spanish. It was so much fun. Sadly, I don’t have any photos to show you as it was back in the day before mobile phones! I took a fifteen-year break from drag to travel the world as a professional dance teacher, but once a drag queen, always a drag queen! I re-emerged as a burlesque diva a few years back, and I’ve even set up my own little Folkestone drag scene.

What challenges are you most excited to take on?

I can sew, I can dance, and I can sing too so I’m excited for any challenges that require those skills! I’ve been a performer all my life and I’m so proud and happy to have been invited by Ru into the Drag Race UK sisterhood and I can’t wait to show what I can do as a mature lady!

Why do you deserve to be the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar?

I’ve got a ton of experience and knowledge that I can bring to the competition plus I would be the oldest winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK! So, watch out girls because here I come!

Kiki Snatch

Drag Queen Kiki Snatch wearing an orange cut out top and shorts with orange suspenders and golf necklaces. She's got her hand to her head and standing to the side. Blue smoke surrounds her with a faded partial image of her in the background

Hey, I’m Kiki Snatch, I'm 25 years old from London and I'm going to snatch your hearts, baby!

What can you expect at a Kiki Snatch show?

I’m not just a look queen, I’m a big performance queen. I can dance and sing whilst looking pretty doing it! You’re going to get cartwheels, splits, dips, tricks, games with the audience, games... You’re just going to have a fun, fabulous time. That’s why they call me Kiki!

Who are your drag influences?

My drag is inspired by iconic female artists such as Mica Paris, Donna Summer, Beyoncé, Ciara and Teyana Taylor. I’m also inspired by the women in my family – they are all so fierce and powerful.

Tell us about your drag name origins?

I’m a bundle of joy and I love to party and so Kiki comes from me loving a ‘kiki’, which is drag lingo for having a good time. And Snatch of course can mean many things applicable to me – a snatched waist, a snatched face or snatching the Drag Race UK crown!

How does it feel to be a Ru Girl?

I’m so excited and I just can’t contain it! I remember where I was when I got the call. I was just about to start work and I heard the word  ‘Condragulations!’. I couldn't scream out loud, so I did a silent scream and hid myself for a little bit, and then composed myself!

What challenge are you most excited for?

I cannot wait to get onto Snatch Game. I’m also looking forward to a girl group challenge because that has me written all over!

Why do you deserve the crown?

Because I’m here to SNATCH the crown and shut it down! Winning the title would prove that the kooky and misunderstood ones can come out on top too.

Kyran Thrax

26, lancashire.

Drag Queen Kyran Thrax with one arm down and one arm up. She's wearing a pink and red outfit with big red jewelled spikes coming out of the hips, breast and shoulders. Her hair is white and red matching the outfit. Her mouth is open. Purple smoke in the background with a partial image of her in the smoke

Pronouns out of drag: He/Him, They/Them

Hello, I'm Kyran Thrax, I'm 26 years old, and I'm originally from Lancashire.

The idea that I'm here right now just feels so correct! I'm raring to go, the timing is perfect. I am going to be a monster.

I’m a performer, and whilst studying Acting and Contemporary Theatre at drama school, I was doing Shakespeare, expressionism, and clowning... and so I thought why not put it all together and mix it with my love of make-up and drag. And so here we are! I’ve been doing drag for four years, and I’ve been doing it full time for two. I absolutely love it. I’ve done fashion shows, drag brunches, commercials, performances in theatres and clubs. You’ve probably even seen me on a cinema screen and now, I’m finally here!

Who or what are your drag inspirations?

I'm very inspired by Lady Gaga - she's a creative genius! I'm also inspired by art house horror films and of course, my mum!  Also, the London drag scene is wild – when I first came here, I saw so many subcultures and avenues of drag that it gave me the creative freedom to create Kyran Thrax!

I'm excited for every challenge - apart from the sewing challenge. I can make amazing things in my brain, but then actually constructing and sewing them is a whole other ballgame!

Are you competitive ?

Yes. When people first meet me, they can be intimidated because I’m quite a lot, but once you get to know me, you’ll find that I'm really soft and silly. There's not a mean bone in my body. I actually hate confrontation. If you shout at me, I’ll most likely cry!

What would it mean to you to take the crown?

It would mean absolutely everything to me to win Drag Race UK. I have been through so much in life and just to be here is amazing. I’m going to cherish every single moment.

43, Stockton on Tees

Drag Queen La Voix wearing a black dress with red jewels on it and clustered at the sleeve and across the breast and round the big pointed collar. Red sash across the waist that goes up into a sleeve. Her hand is up with one hand on her hip and red hair and eyebrows. Teals smoke effect in background with a partial image of her in it

Hello, darlings! I'm La Voix, I'm 43 and I’m from Stockton on Tees. I am a seasoned diva and I cannot wait to get going!

I'm so excited. When they rang me and told me the news, I couldn't believe it! Shocked isn’t even the word. I had to clear my diary – I’m very busy you see.

Describe a typical La Voix drag show?

I’m known for big, loud belty songs and I love to make ‘em laugh. Comedy and singing are my thing.

You are indeed a very busy queen. Tell us about your career highlights?

Where do I even start?! I’ve competed in Britain's Got Talent, starred in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, working with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley; I’ve starred in various pantomimes over the span of twenty years; I’ve worked on EIGHTY cruise ships (yes eighty!) and I’ve toured all over the world with my one woman show… and now I’m here on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK!

Do you have time to list some of the famous names you’ve worked with?

Some of the names I've worked with are Mickey Rooney, Claire Sweeney, Les Dennis, Pamela Anderson, David Gest, Cilla Black, Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Zoe Ball, Nigella Lawson, Lulu… did I mention Claire Sweeney? Jane McDonald, Rylan, Ant and Dec, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan... Is there anyone I haven’t worked with at this point?!

I’d love to work with RuPaul, Adele and Madonna next – I’m hoping that this competition gives me the chance to!

Who are your drag inspirations?

The big divas. Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey and Liza Minnelli. Just all the greats – big, belty confident women!

You’re already a very established performer. Why Drag Race UK now?

I wanted to do Drag Race because drag has changed so much since I first started drag back in prehistoric times, twenty years ago. I thought Drag Race UK would be an amazing second chapter of my career and a personal challenge to immerse myself in the new world of drag. Also, I just love RuPaul!

Oh, I’m the queen of competitions. I’ve done quite a few! I love a competition. It pushes me out of my comfort zone. I’m not going in with a game plan. I’m going in there with an open mind, extra tights and a secret hidden bottle of vodka. I love the adrenaline of it all. Bring it on!

Are you nervous about anything in the competition?

I’m not the best dancer and all of the other queens are probably going to be death dropping and splitting all over the main stage. Meanwhile, I’ll just be sat in the corner with a cup of tea quietly praying.

What would it mean to you be crowned the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar?

It would be phenomenal. If I were to win, it would be life changing. For me, it’s more than winning Drag Race UK. It’s a relaunch and rebirth for my drag.

36, Manchester

Drag Queen Lill in a leopard print strappy dress, black sheer long gloves and black fur piece draped on her arms. 50s style hair with a leopard print hat and a black choker. Red smoke effect in background with partial image of Lill in the smoke

Hiya! My name's Lill, I'm 36 years old, and I'm from the best place in the world – Manchester! I’m gorgeous, I’ve got great style, I’m creative, fun and I’m easy like a Sunday morning.

I would say my drag is very creative and rebellious. I love getting stuff from charity shops, cutting things up and transforming old tatty stuff into the stunning!  I’ve got a thousand different references that influence my drag. I adore fashion and my favourite designer is John Galliano, who inspires a lot of my fashion looks. The best thing about me is my sense of style. My style is usually glamourous pin up girl, but sometimes it can be freaky and weird! Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever.

What are the origins of your drag name?

Lill is an acronym for Living in Lavish Luxury. My friend made it up for me one day, and I ran with it! I like to think I'm living in lavish luxury always! I appreciating each moment as it comes, I spoil myself rotten and I have a great time.

It feels absolutely crazy to be here. I've been doing drag for about ten years and I absolutely love it. Drag is the best! I feel like I’m finally here at the top of my game and looking absolutely correct.

What challenges are you most confident about?

I’m very good at making things, and so I would say a sewing challenge. I’ve already made some costumes for Drag Race UK queens Banksie and Cheddar Gorgeous, and so I feel really confident that my looks are strong and no one is going to be able to top them!

I’m also looking forward to anything that lets me be funny! Whether that’s an acting challenge or a comedy roast, that’s somewhere where I feel I’d be able to have some fun.

What's the biggest misconception about you?

I think it takes quite a while for people to get to know me. At first, people might think that I'm a bit rude or a bit stoney faced, but I'm definitely not. I've got the biggest, softest heart. I'm just a bit shy at first!

I believe I deserve to win because I’ve got great style, I’m a fab performer, I’m a lot of fun and nobody else does it quite like me. It would be fabulous to receive validation from RuPaul, the judges and all of the Drag Race fans out there!

24, Cardiff

Drag Queen Marmalade wearing a gold jewelled bra and underwear with gold fabric on the bottom and a gold top that's just sleeves. She's got white fur on her cuffs and on a headpiece with gold jewellery. Pink smoke effect in the background with a partial image of Marmalade in it

Greetings one and all! My name is Marmalade, I am 24 years old and I am the crown jewel of Cardiff drag.

I would describe my drag as Hollywood glamour, all wrapped up in a gorgeous Welsh sense of stupidity. When I was sixteen, I saw the most fabulous photo of the Hollywood starlet, Lana Turner in the film The Prodigal and that was it! All I wanted from then was to become that image. My favourite leading ladies are Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Faye Dunaway, Barbara Streisand. Also, two of my all-time favourites are Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her. I like to think that I give vintage aesthetic with a modern twist!

What is the drag scene like in Cardiff?

The Cardiff drag scene is very tiny. There are very few queens and kings there. That said, it's a mighty scene. We're a gorgeous set of very talented weirdos. I am the prettiest though. I mean, look at me!

Your work has already appeared on Drag Race UK. Tell us more?

Outside of drag, I am a full-time seamstress. I’ve made outfits for Drag Race UK alumni such as Lawrence Chaney, Victoria Scone and Tia Kofi, but it’s now my time to step into the spotlight so here I am! I started sewing out of complete necessity, as there weren’t many drag seamstresses in Cardiff, and now it’s become a career and my passion and my major superpower.

Where does your drag name come from?

My original drag name was Marmite, mainly because I really liked Marmite. But one day, I accidentally said I was called Marmalade. I realised it sounded much better so I stuck with it. Believe it or not, I've never actually had marmalade. I have no idea what it tastes like!

Are there any challenges you’re nervous about?

I’m not worried about any of the challenges. I have watched Drag Race since the very beginning and I know exactly what I need to bring and guess what, I'm bringing it. If I do falter, I'm also bringing delusion to back me up. I'll just tell myself that I did great!

How important is it for you to represent Wales?

I am so excited to represent my hometown of Cardiff, and my home country. There's so much talent in our small but mighty nation and you're going to see it right here!

Rileasa Slaves

Drag Queen Rileasa Slaves wearing a fitted brown dress off the shoulders with a brown fur piece on her arm. She's standing slightly to the side with one hand to her arm and looking to the camera. Pink smoke effect in the background with a partial image of Rileasa in the smoke

Tell us about yourself?

Hey boo! My name is Rileasa Slaves, I'm 32 years old from London, but I was born in St Lucia. She's international baby!

People say you’re the spitting image of a certain pop star... tell us more?

I have been told I resemble a certain worldwide superstar named Rihanna. Like Rhianna, I’m also a Caribbean queen, a glamazon, and a superstar, but I’m not Rihanna. I’m the real Rileasa, ready to be rileasa’d onto the world.

What have been your career highlights?

Drag has opened so many doors for me. I’m a trained contemporary dancer, and I have performed on tour with Becky Hill, travelled all over Europe and even performed at Glastonbury! It was an amazing moment to perform to such a big crowd. And now, I’m on Drag Race UK!

Who or what influences your drag?

I grew up in the small Caribbean island of St Lucia, with dancehall music, Soca and Calypso as the soundtrack to my life, and then later I fell in love with London the city that gave me permission to be myself. And so my drag is sunshine with a touch of spice!

What does drag mean to you?

The first time I did drag, I had so much fear in my bones. A lot of my fear came from my religious upbringing in the Caribbean and the difficulties you can face being part of the LGBTQ+ community in the Caribbean. Becoming Rileasa has given me the opportunity to face my fears.

Are you competitive?

My biggest competitor is me! I want to get out of my head and have some fun, with my eyes on the prize!

I deserve to take the crown because I’m bringing the island flavour, the sauce and a little something special to the competition that y'all have been missing out on! The world is ready for Rileasa to be crowned the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar. Let’s go!

33, Manchester

Drag Queen Saki Yew wearing a black coat with black leather gloves and leather collar/headpiece. She's got a black hat and nails coming out of her gloves. She's got one hand on her hip and one hand slightly pointing up. Red smoke effect in background with partial image of Saki in the smoke

Pronouns in drag: She/Her

G’day mate! I'm Saki Yew and I'm 33 years old. I'm originally from Melbourne, Australia, but love brought me all the way across the globe to settle down in to life as a booked and blessed Manchester drag queen.

What can you expect from a Saki Yew show?

There’s a lot of energy - you won’t be able to take your eyes off me! You can expect to see a showgirl who’s going to perform her heart out, whether it be a ballad or a dance anthem. It's really important to me, to represent my cultural identity in my drag and so I serve Australian showgirl glamour, mixed with high energy Filipino sass and a sprinkle of Northern wit and realness. I think I am a bit of a Frankenstein drag queen!

What skills do you bring to the competition?

I’ve been a drag queen for over thirteen years, and I have an extensive entertainment CV. As well as serving face and showgirl glamour, I am also a very experienced sewer and crafter. I particularly love crochet. My love of crochet comes from when I was on tour with The Lion King and during breaks in acts, I would crochet blankets, beanies, scarves. I even crocheted a beanie for my dog! Here’s hoping, that the opportunity arises to crochet in a design challenge!

What challenges are you looking forward to?

I can’t wait to show off in a girl group challenge and a Rusical! With my musical theatre background, these challenges are made for me.

I’m super competitive. I can play dirty if I want to, but let's see how the girls play first! I've got my eyes on the crown, so the girls had better watch out…

What would winning the crown mean to you?

Taking the crown would mean the world to me.  A dream come true, and for any little boys and girls watching out there, they might see that winning at life could be a possibility for them too.

Zahirah Zapanta

28, nottingham.

Drag Queen Zahirah Zapanta wearing a peacock feather bodice with material draping down the back of the garment. One hand is lightly touching her shoulder and the other is pointing down. Blue smoke effect iin the background with a partial image of Zahirah in the smoke

Mabuhay! I’m Zahirah Zapanta, I’m 28 years old from Nottingham and I’m your beauty queen!

How does it feel to be here as a Ru Girl?

I am feeling incredible, beautiful and most importantly humble! I’m so excited to be here.

Describe your drag?

The look is correct, the hair is laid, the performances are fabulous, but the personality is a chaotic mess! I’m so proud of my British Filipino roots and it has influenced my drag so much. As a little kid, I constantly watched beauty pageants such as Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Continental, and the UK has given me a unique and eclectic edge. I grew up with a lot of powerful women in my life. Growing up with Filipino aunties, my mum, my sister and lesbian aunties has definitely shaped Zahirah. The genetics do help me look this fabulous too!

Tell us about your journey to drag?

I was born in the Philippines and came to the UK with my family when I was 10 years old settling in Nottingham. Growing up, I was well known where I grew up. I was always quite flamboyant and my family actively encouraged me to be a beauty queen. As a teenager, it felt like a natural move to showcase my love of makeup and dressing up on YouTube. I built a fanbase, created a network, forayed into drag, learnt more about the art and I became a beauty queen!

How excited are you to meet Mama Ru?

Mama Ru is a celestial omnipotent being that has been a part of my life and my heart for so long! Getting to meet her is my dream. It’s unreal to think she’s a real person!

Are you in it to win it?

Of course, I'm most definitely in it to win it!
