Solo Female Travelers Tours (Our tours!)

Bucket list experiences and unusual places for life changing connections with local women and fellow travelers, great food & wine, fabulous company, culture, nature, wildlife and so much more! Our trips are designed by women, for women and are led by women.

We offer a range of luxury, personally curated experiences that have all the ingredients of a well-deserved vacation and adventure expeditions to unheard of places.

What makes us unique:

  • We support local female owned businesses that make a difference and we amplify their efforts at equality. We believe in the power of putting our money where our mouths are and we aim for 100% female powered tours. Other women-only tour companies hire male guides or support businesses fully staffed by men.
  • All our tours are female led , without a local female guide, there is no tour. We are not in it for the money, we want to shape the travel industry and provide more employment opportunities to women. We don’t fly in guides from overseas, we 100% trust our local guides.
  • Many of our female travel tours are accompanied by a professional photographer to capture unforgettable moments and candid instants that will stay with you. We want you to be in the moment and not experience a trip through your camera.
  • No single supplements: Come solo and we’ll pair you with another traveler.

Our destinations

solo travel female packages usa

+Hand picked curated experiences where every moment is special and unique. No buses and ticking off boxes, only meaningful connections and moments that will stay with you. Destinations nobody else goes to. Designed by women, for women and led by women. Photographer onboard several trips. Support women at the destinations.

-Limited available as we do not aim to become a massive tour company and keep our groups to a maximum of 10-14 guests only.

Have a look at the highlight videos of some of our trips:

Surf Getaways

As the name of this women travel company indicates, Surf Getaways is an Australian-based company offering surf holidays in various locations around the world.

Founded by a surf instructor with years of experience teaching at a fixed surf school and a surf lover, the company now offers getaways where both newbies and experienced surfers can enjoy a sports-holiday with lots of vitamin C.

Tours are for all levels and some of them allow non-surfing companions to join too.

+Small group, premium and unique experiences all about surfing with very experienced teachers.

-Trip geared towards surfing and less appealing for non-surfers. Destinations are still very Asia-Pacific focused.

Well-established Condé Nast is the publisher of several popular magazines among which Vogue, GQ and Condé Nast Traveler. They also launched a high-end line of women-only tours called Women Who Travel for women traveling together to appreciate the finer things in life.

These tours have a food and cultural focus and are organized by El Camino , curated by the Condé Nast Editors who also run a podcast on female travel and a large Facebook group.

Almost all tours include lots of evening music and dancing, cooking classes and real exposure to the local culture. There is also a trip photographer to take all those candid shots.

El Camino tours are quite different from the majority of other tour companies. They are bold and immersive in the real sense of the word. They feature artists in all areas, from food to crafts to music, and none of the usual touring. No checklist, no museums, no monuments.

+Small group, premium and unique experiences that are just not easy to find on your own. Installment plan. Lots of food and drinks, music and art. In-house photographer taking shots for you.

-Prices are on the high-end of the scale, in fact these are the most expensive of the trips on this list averaging about $300-$600 per day.

Woander Tours

solo travel female packages usa

Woander Tours is a great option for when you want to explore on a guided tour, on your own. They offer self-guided audio tours in cities like Edinburgh and Dublin, and give you the tools you need to explore your destination by yourself, but never alone.

In taking one of these tours, you will connect with your destination through the stories you’ll hear, the places you will see, and the people you will meet along the way.

These tours are carefully created to give you a local, unique and authentic experience; they work with local historians, small business owners, guides and travel bloggers to create the best possible itineraries.

The best part? You are in control of your own experience. They simply guide you to their favourite spots, landmarks and hidden gems at your destination. Each tour comes with a printable PDF-guide with directions as well as the audio.

+Connect with local people and experiences, and support local economies. No need to travel with a group or guide if you want to explore on your own time.

-There are limited destinations right now, so we look forward to more guides being released soon. Make sure you remain conscious of your surroundings with headphones in.

Purposeful Nomad

Purposeful Nomad focuses on what the name indicates, making sure that their trips have a positive impact, as they say “responsible, rewarding, safe, sustainable and ethical travel for women, by women”.

Their focus is on women-only, intimate and small group trips that go deeper and do not focus on the main tourist sites but on responsible tourism. Instead, you will learn something new like how to shear an alpaca or cook using traditional methods.

Days are spent at farms, beaches or at local foundations and charities fighting for women’s rights; there are yoga sessions and slow days by the sea. The emphasis of Purposeful Nomad is on slow travel.

+Get exposed to (mostly) women-owned charities and organisations from around the world and relax with lots of free time to simply take it all in. The purpose is to return recharged.

-Experiences tend to shy away from major tourist sites (not bad per se) and may not cover the key tourist attractions. Prices are on the high side.

WanderTours

Started, and almost always led, by Beth in 2008 as a means for her to take other women on some of the places she loves, WanderTours offers a small list of tours for women only (with some exceptions) that feel more like a group of friends getting together than a group tour company.

Beth encourages future guests to friend her on Facebook and get to know her better to decide if they would enjoy going on a trip.

She also hosts the She’s Bold Podcast , in which she shares stories of extraordinary women who inspire in many areas like travel, music, fitness, and more.

+The only women’s adventure travel company that organizes trips to Papua New Guinea giving you a unique opportunity (if pricey). Cozy and friendly, as if you were traveling with a friend.

-On the pricey side but this also includes a portion of the cost devoted to a local charity that usually works with women or children. Group tours are a bit larger than others (up to 16 guests).

Adventures in Good Company

Founded in 1999 by Marian Marbury, Adventures in Good Company focuses on adventure travel for women with emphasis on women of all ages.

Their trips have an outdoor focus and involve various level of activity depending on your choice. There is hiking across Greenland or the villages of Cinque Terre, kayaking in the sea, exploration in the Amazon or multi-sport trips with a bit of everything. Birders can marvel at Guyana and seafarers can sail in Turkey.

Because of the focus on nature, Adventures in Good Company has a strong responsible tourism charter and follows the leave no trace principles. Traveling slowly and being a fully remote team also helps contribute to sustainable travel.

In 2020 Kelly Kimple assumed ownership of the company, bringing fresh energy and a commitment to the vision and philosophy of guiding on which Adventures in Good Company was founded.

+A true outdoor tour company giving you the unique chance to explore the world on foot. Long years of experience. Wide portfolio of trips in the US. Clear audience of older women.

-The website feels a bit 2000s and is clunky and time consuming to navigate and filter due to the amount of trips (calendar view works best). Very US-focused in audience.

The Girls’ Guide to Paris

Founded by Doni, an American living in France, primarily with a focus on the country, The Girls’ Guide to Paris now offers 50+ different trips to destinations around the world with a touch of luxury, a welcome glass of champagne and a default no sharing policy.

You will find holidays ideal for mature women like wine trips, writing retreats, artist-themed itineraries and a wide range of destinations and curated trips to satisfy any craving. All solo travel female packages are mid to high end and prices are offered per room, but you can get a discount if you book with a friend.

Special SFT perk: Mention you heard about them from us and you will receive $100 OFF from any booking.

+Very strong culture, food & wine focus with a long tradition and track record delivering fabulous experiences for mature women.

-Trips are on the expensive side since the positioning is high end. No option for pairing guests to save on accommodation.

Damesly goes beyond typical group tours and focuses on travel, writing and photography workshops and trips of self-discovery where there are elements of coaching, mentorship and business brought together to help you find clarity or direction.

The company is the travel arm of Go Girl Guides and Women’s Travel Fest and has a strong bond in the creative community appealing to women who may work in the field, although open to everyone.

Trips are mid to high end and have a focus on culture and beautiful sites. Destinations are photogenic and perfect for those who love to photograph.

+Like-minded creative community of women with similar passion means you will be among your own. Workshop trips have a skill-building element. Reasonably priced for the mid-high end range of accommodations.

-Prices are on the high side. Guides are most likely foreign and not local. While guests are female, the businesses supported are often not.

WHOA – Women High on Adventure

WHOA is a boutique adventure-focused women travel company founded by Allison and Danielle in 2013 to offer active holidays such as hiking to Everest Base Camp or Kilimanjaro with a sustainable and responsible twist.

Their trips put travelers in touch with local women to facilitate cultural interaction and they are all about empowerment. The company works with small local female-owned businesses instead of bigger ones.

WHOA is all about inclusion and has even launched trips for plus sized women. As they put it “WHOA women find comfort in the uncomfortable. We bask in the sun and dirt. Never afraid to break a nail, a sweat or a stereotype. Adventure is an outlook and it’s how we choose to live.”

There are two types of trips on offer, adventures and expeditions and WHOA can also organise your own private group trip. The majority of the trips have a maximum of 12 to 18 participants.

+Fun and unapologetic with a strong responsible and sustainable tourism focus and women empowerment.

– Small tour company so limited list of tours and all very hardcore active (except for the Oktoberfest which may be tougher on the liver than the legs!). Some trips can be quite large (18 pax for Kilimanjaro). Although guests are female, guides aren’t always female or local.

Wild Women Expeditions

Wild Women Expeditions has been around for over 30 years and focuses on adventure and active trips for women of all ages.

They have wide portfolio of trips to many countries in the world all under the same active common denominator. They also have yoga retreats and safari expeditions.

As they put it “We encourage you to let go and get wild! We value freedom of expression and want to give you the space to maybe see yourself in a new light, outside of your regular responsibilities and everyday roles.”

Wild Women Expeditions also organises private trips for groups and has a couple of trips for teenage girls.

The company focuses on being in the moment so all trips start with a discussion on photography and videography and recommends guests to be in the moment and void constant social media updates. Likewise, they encourage participants not to bring drones.

+Experienced women’s tour company. Wide portfolio with several departures for some of the trips means it is easier to find the right one for you. 7-day risk free cancellation policy and the ability to pay in instalments.

-Slow and clunky website that makes it hard and time-consuming to search and compare. If you are someone who likes to document everything or take lots of photography and videography you may find the trip philosophy to be against it.

The Women’s Travel Group

The Women’s Travel Group was established in 1992 and has a portfolio of women trips that usually include more than one country and cater to an older demographic interested in having a more in-depth conversation about the culture, the politics and the history of a place. As its President, Phyllis Stoller, put it to us, “Our guides are for smart women who bring complicated questions.”

You will find some of the popular destinations as well as more unusual ones like Albania, Georgia or Madagascar.

Accommodation tends to be on the higher end and meals better than average. Emphasis is on culture and food and the itinerary is closed. No shopping stops and no free time. Prices are mostly all inclusive and there are no surprises or hidden costs.

Phyllis continues, “We often have a speaker who talks about the dark side of a country. For example, a human rights worker in Chile under Pinochet; an economic development expert in Albania; a Fistula Doctor in Ethiopia. We like controversy to get the group to talk.”

+More in-depth conversation to truly get under the skin of a place, unique to The Women’s Travel Group. No extras that aren’t included. Packed itinerary gets a lot in.

-Closed itinerary means you need to love the whole (or you can skip some parts). The website is a bit clunky; Information is hard to locate and compare so it might be best to reach out to them directly for the trips you are interested in.

AdventureWomen

Founded in 1982, AdventureWomen runs one of the oldest female travel group trips with a focus on adventure travel for women over the age of 35 who want to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves.

The company was purchased by the current owner Judi Wineland and her two daughters in 2016, and today runs trips to 65 countries. As the company says, they are not a travel company but a relationship one.

In an interview Wineland says, “We’re kind of a tribe of sorts, seeking other like-minded spirits to share our adventures with. So, if you want to make travel experiences really transformational  for  women, it’s probably best if women are driving the ship.”

AdventureWomen has one of the widest portfolios of destinations and a strong and well-established track-record with a guide-ambassador combo per trip, surveys and research into female travel and lots more.

Like most other women travel groups in this list the company is female-owned and works with female-owned businesses. AdventureWomen also organizes private trips for your female group.

+Company with long experience in the industry. Huge array of destinations and a focus on community and relationship.

-Prices are very high for some of the trips considering they are for shared accommodations. Age restriction is both a plus and a minus and you should expect a higher age representation.

Explorer Chick

Explorer Chick is another a female adventure travel company for women traveling together to conquer new heights, and we mean that literally as well as figuratively.

They shy away from luxury and premium tours and instead focus on getting you back in nature and staying in the purest accommodations; tents, yurts and huts.

As they say “We promise hysterical laughing, unladylike behavior, strings of cuss words, and happy exhaustive fatigue on all of our adventures”. Or, as the founder puts it, “we would do cool shit in cool places with cool chicks!”

I think you get the gist of the company’s philosohy!

Besides organizing women only adventure tours, Explorer Chick also offer day trips and long weekend getaways within the US which consist of adventures and hiking trips across the country. They can also organize private departures for any of their advertised tours where men are welcome to join.

+Strong focus on having fun and little tolerance for moaners and complainers who will be removed from the trips.

-Shorter trips are on the expensive side. Dietary needs may not be catered for (in which case you may have to bring your own food). No instalment plans.

Sights and Soul Travel

Sights and Soul Travel is a women travel package company that specializes in high-end women travel tours which include premium experiences and activities, wine and food and upscale hotels and hit the traditional tourist sites.

Expect wine tasting, spas, wellness elements and fine dining built into a more traditional and cultural trip.

Tours have a lot of activities and a packed itinerary so you will get to cover a lot. Because of the type of trip, they are appealing to mother-daughter getaways and the company states that their average guest is above the age of 55.

+Huge array of destinations with a more traditional travel style: buses, cities and main sites. Most of the trips are almost all inclusive.

-The itineraries are packed which can be a Pro and a Con. Prices are on the high-end for a shared accommodation. Groups can be a bit larger than other companies (up to 16 guests)

Femscape Sojourns

Femscape Sojourns was founded in 2018 and is a boutique mother-daughter small group travel company that organizes trips based on the traveler’s age. There are trips for women in their 20s and 30s and for women over 40. The company also has specific mother-daughter trips.

Founded by Tami and Latifah, Femscape Sojourns wants to empower women in the places they visit so they work and support local women-owned businesses. The idea is that travelers preferences change with age and that is why trips are tailored to various age groups.

In keeping with that, the mother-daughter duo escort the group in their age range.

+Small groups of 6-12 women. Unique mother-daughter trips for bonding. Cozy and personalised, hosted by the owners. Some trips have a free day you can customise.

-As the company is relatively new, the range of trips is very limited to Barcelona and Morocco.

Fit & Fly

Fit & Fly takes the idea of a fitness and wellness retreat to the next level with premium & luxury accommodation, local exploration and world class instructors.

Guests start the day with a fitness class and some evenings end with yoga, but the rest of the day is spent exploring the destination. Fitness is at the core of the trips.

+Premium accommodations and renowned fitness instructors flown in for the occasion.

-Very high price, especially for the single rooms. Limited options for solo travelers to share with other as many rooms are for single use or friends booking together.

SmarTours is a US company that specializes in creating exciting international tours at accessible prices. The company focuses and responsible and sustainable travel with groups an average of 23 guests.

SmarTours has an exclusive section of women-only tours, aimed at mature women who want to have a once in a lifetime experience. They inspire and empower women to travel and offer many immersive female-focused experiences in their trips.

Some of their top women-only tour destinations are Jordan, Egypt and Turkey. A few of their amazing female-focused experiences are: a modern Egyptian women lecture and connecting with Jordanian local women.

They also have a FB group where women can find a roommate or connect with fellow female guests before their trip.

+Immersing international trips at very affordable prices. Some trips have no single supplements at all. Exotic and fascinating destinations with mature women-focused experiences.

-Limited destinations for their women-only tours. Limited single room options. There is a single supplement in the majority of the tours. Large groups of up to 23 guests to keep costs down.

Road scholar women

Road scholar is known for its educational trips that are intensely focused on culture, learning and getting deep into the history of a place through lectures and sessions on various topics.

Besides their general trips that are open to anyone, the Road Scholar Women trips are exclusively for women. Some of their itineraries are exclusively women-only and designed with women in mind, whereas others are just women-only departures with the same general program.

+In-depth cultural and historical understanding with lectures led by specialists and experts on various cultural aspects of the country.

-Limited destinations for their women-only tours. Very large groups of 13 to 24 guests means the experience is different than that of a smaller group tour company.

Other women travel groups to look out for

Besides the above women’s tours there are a few other tours for women worth mentioning, as follows:

  • Dare to detour offers retreats in the US that are more about self-discovery and taking a break from your daily life to pause, re-frame, rethink, and perhaps find yourself and your path again.
  • Women traveling together offer solo traveler tours for women in the US. Trips are usually 6-7 days long and mostly culturally-focused.
  • Living Big Travel is not an exclusive women travel group company but rather a custom-tour company that organizes trips for solo travelers so you can reach out to them if you wish to go on an adventure on your own.
  • She Hit Refresh is a community which also organizes retreats in Spain and Morocco for women over the age of 30 who want to make a big change and pursue a life of travel. As the founder puts it “[the retreats are] a magical week of exploration, introspection, and inspiration!”
  • Adventurous Women is an Australian company who offer tours, day trips, retreats and many memorable experiences throughout Australia. Most of the women who join them come solo and there’s a wide age range. Depending on the kind of adventure you’re into, you can find everything from hiking to water-based trips.
  • Diva Destinations is a UK company that specializes in bringing together lesbian & queer women on group holidays. They have group tours in the UK, US, Norway and Portugal.

Why you should join a women travel group

Women want to travel and sometimes, they don’t have the right friend or travel companion to do so. While many choose to travel on their own ( watch our mini-documentary to find out more), many prefer to join a group. Both choices are amazing and rewarding, if you’re still thinking about it, get some inspiration from our solo travel quotes .

Although it sounds like an oxymoron, solo travel tours are a great alternative for inexperienced travelers who prefer the comfort of an organized tour where they can make new friends and gather the courage to go it alone in the future.

Several companies have sprung in recent years to facilitate women traveling together via group trips, hangouts or meet-up groups. Besides our own women only group trips, we also created a sub-group for solo female travelers wanting to swap homes, hangout or host other members of the community in a safe environment.

Now, let’s dive into some tips that’ll make your solo trip as smooth as a jazz tune 🙂

  • Research like a detective: Before you set foot on American soil, do your homework. Research your destinations, check out local safety advisories, and read up on cultural norms.
  • Blend in like a chameleon: When in Rome, do as the Romans do (or at least dress like them -_-). Adapt your attire to the local vibe, avoiding anything too flashy or attention-grabbing. You don’t want to be a beacon for pickpockets, NOW …… do you? O_O
  • Trust your inner compass: Sometimes, that little voice in your head knows best. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to walk away or change your plans. Remember, you’re the boss of your own adventure.
  • Be tech-savvy: Technology is your friend, so use it wisely. Keep your phone charged, download offline maps, and set up emergency contact information.
  • Ditch the valuables: When strolling around, leave your fancy jewelry and stacks of cash at the hotel. Carry only what you need, and keep it secure in a money belt or hidden pouch. Pickpockets are like sneaky ninjas, so don’t make yourself an easy target.
  • Embrace the local language: Learning a few basic phrases in English will go a long way. You’ll be able to ask for directions, order food, and even strike up conversations with the locals. Plus, it’ll make you feel like a bonafide American adventurer.
  • Accommodation with a conscience: When choosing a place to stay, do your research. Read reviews, check safety ratings, and opt for hostels or hotels in well-lit and populated areas.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings: Keep an eye on your bag, avoid walking alone at night, and trust your instincts. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to hail a cab or ask for help from a trusted source.
  • Embrace the buddy system: If you’re feeling a bit timid, team up with fellow travelers for excursions or activities. You’ll not only have a built-in travel companion but also an extra pair of eyes and ears to keep you safe.

Kaitlyn Rosati - female solo travel - Dallas

The best destinations for female solo travel in the U.S.

See the country safely and in good company—your own—when you visit the best destinations for female solo travel in the U.S.

Kaitlyn Rosati

Solo female travel is on an all-time rise. Women are finally catching onto the concept that often, the best company is our own. If you’re sick of arguing over where to get dinner, whether you should go hiking or lounge by the pool, or simply needing to use the restroom when your travel partner is in there with the door locked, perhaps it’s time you book a trip, party of one.

Solo traveling in the United States can be just as, if not more, rewarding as traveling to far-flung destinations. Plus, the convenience of not having to bring outlet adapters, knowing local emergency numbers, and having cell service and data makes solo traveling feel more at ease, especially for newcomers. Solo female travel is possible anywhere in the world, from Singapore to South Dakota, but if you’re looking for a domestic getaway, here’s where to go.

RECOMMENDED: The best cities for singles in the USA

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best places for female solo travel in the U.S.

1.  grand rapids, mi.

Grand Rapids, MI

The Midwest is frequently overlooked for the fast-paced East Coast, palm tree and mountain-lined West Coast, or the sunny South, but Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a colorful city ideal for women traveling alone. There are plenty of women-owned businesses to support the local ladies of Grand Rapids during your stay. For a buzz in the morning, head to Last Mile Café , a Black- and woman-owned shop, and for a buzz at night in what’s been named Beer City USA , head to Brewery Vivant , set in an old funeral home.

Perfect for : beer and art lovers

2.  Honolulu, HI

Honolulu, HI

Before I took my first international solo trip, I dipped my toes in solo travel by dipping them in the warm waters of Waikiki Beach. Taking my first solo trip to one of the most cliche honeymoon destinations in the U.S. felt equal parts rebellious and romantic. I sat at the bar at Waikiki Brewing Company and made friends with strangers. On my way back from snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, I took myself to Rainbow Drive-In for a proper Hawaiian lunch plate. I hiked Diamond Head, trekked through Manoa Falls, and on my last day there, I sat in the sand with a lilikoi in hand while I watched young local kids do backflips into the Pacific, officially falling in love with the tranquility that comes with solo traveling.

Perfect for : a tranquil escape

3.  New York, NY

New York, NY

I’ve planned many trips solely around food, and if you want to do the same, look no further than the culinary mecca of the USA: New York . A solo trip to New York City is a love letter to oneself; take yourself out on the town. For a classic New York steakhouse experience, grab a seat at Strip House , where every meal should be legally required to end with their decadent 24-layer chocolate cake. For a brunch that feels like an international solo trip, head to La Nacional , located beneath the Spanish Benevolent Society. And no trip to New York City is complete without some ‘za; for some of the best in the city, head to woman-owned Don Antonio , which is conveniently located a stone’s throw away from Times Square. Speaking of Times Square, stay at The Algonquin Hotel , and if your solo trip starts to feel a little lonely, hang with their resident cat, Hamlet.

Perfect for : foodies

4.  Dallas, TX

Dallas, TX

As women in the United States, Texas is often one of the last places we call a safe haven. But it’s crucial to remember that the people living in places whose policies we don’t agree with aren’t always fairly represented by those who govern them. Dallas is a prime example. I traveled to Dallas alone in 2023 and ended up having the time of my life. I frolicked through the 500,000 spring tulips at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden , drank my way through Margarita Mile , and ate tender brisket at Terry Black’s BBQ . If you have reservations about going to Texas, flip the script by putting your money where your mouth is, and catch a drag show at The Rose Room to support communities affected by recent state changes.

Perfect for : a plain ol' good time

5.  Hot Springs, AR

Hot Springs, AR

Out of all the places I’ve looked for a relaxing oasis, Arkansas was not where I expected to find it, but it turns out you don’t need a flight to Budapest or Helsinki to enjoy some good ol’ thermal baths. Pumping out nearly one million gallons of water daily, the natural hot springs in Hot Springs, Arkansas, produce H2O at an average temperature of 143 degrees Fahrenheit. Native American tribes deemed Hot Springs “the Valley of the Vapors,” and in 1832, President Andrew Jackson made Hot Springs a federal reservation. To best enjoy the town’s natural thermal waters, head to Bathhouse Row and check out Quapaw Baths & Spa , or simply take advantage of one of the many water fountains around Hot Springs National Park to stay hydrated.

Perfect for : wellness junkies

6.  Alamogordo, NM

Alamogordo, NM

In 2021, I drove cross-country with my dog, Bowie. Alamogordo was wildly out of the way for my planned route, but I wanted to see White Sands National Park , so I took the detour, hoping the additional hours in the car would be worth it. While White Sands National Park is what drew me to Alamogordo, it surprisingly became an afterthought compared to what else the town had in store. I learned the southern New Mexico town is well known for its wine production, and I spent the afternoon at Heart of the Desert , where I tried New Mexican wines along with locally harvested pistachios. I also stopped at several antique shops, and in theme with Alamogordo being an underrated wine destination, I bought a wine rack that looks like a bicycle.

Perfect for : wine lovers

7.  Anchorage, AK

Anchorage, AK

Traveling solo doesn’t always mean being entirely alone, and both cruises and group trips are surefire ways to meet people. Plus, both options mean you don’t have to go through the hassle of planning an itinerary. Cruises, in particular, have recently seen a large influx in solo passenger bookings, and while many associate cruises with a tropical vacation, swap the bikini for a parka and head to Anchorage, Alaska, instead. Anchorage is the USA’s dupe for Iceland; you can expect to see glaciers, chase northern lights, go dog-sledding, and even go for solo late-night walks in the midnight sun. Princess Cruises offers routes to Anchorage with prices starting at only $398. If you’re not into big boats, tour company Exodus Adventure Travels offers a 10-day Alaska Wildlife & Wilderness trip with several opportunities to spot Alaska’s Big 5: bear, moose, Dall sheep, wolf and caribou.

Perfect for : making new friends

8.  Chicago, IL

Chicago, IL

For a colorful city with walkable streets, museums for days , quality regional food, and endless entertainment, Chicago simply has it all. For an ideal Chicago Day, start your morning off at Millennium Park, where you can snap a shot with The Bean (pro tip: it gets crowded, so get here bright and early). The Art Institute of Chicago is just a five-minute walk away, but for another compelling museum, head to the Museum of Science and Industry. Try the famous Chicago pizza at Gino’s East and a Chicago-style hotdog at Chicago’s Dog House . At night, catch an improv show at The Second City . Finish with a nightcap at Pops for Champagne for an unforgettable day of enjoying your own company.

Perfect for : a quick city break

9.  Gulf Shores, AL

Gulf Shores, AL

The cliché images that come to mind for those who have never been to Alabama might be small rural towns and hefty portions of barbecue, but its best-kept secret is that the state is home to one of the country’s top beaches. For the ladies looking for a pristine beach in an underrated destination, Gulf Shores has 32 miles of white sand, and with its location being directly on the coast of Mexico, you can experience the same iconic turquoise waters of the Caribbean without whipping out your passport. Rent a bike from Gulf Shores Bike Rental , hit the boardwalk and enjoy an off-the-beaten-path beach getaway.

Perfect for : a beach weekend

10.  Elkhart Lake, WI

Elkhart Lake, WI

If it’s strictly your own company that you crave, sans distraction, solo travel is a pretty easy way to achieve that goal. Skip the big cities and head to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where solitude is easy with a population of less than 1,000. Nature lovers will particularly thrive here; head to Kettle Moraine State Forest to wander around the 22,000 acres of trees, glacial hills, and kettle lakes. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is within the forest, where you can enjoy a peaceful, easy hike. Elkhart Lake is the perfect respite for those dreamy log cabin vibes. Grab a book, make a fire, and stock up at Vintage Elkhart Lake for wine and Henning's Wisconsin Cheese for cheese.

Perfect for : the great outdoors

What size are the groups on Women-Only tours?

The 10 Best Solo Female Travel Groups and Tours

07/05/2023 by Kristin Addis 3 Comments

Setting out alone to travel the world as a woman can be daunting. Whether it’s choosing a destination fit for first-timers or planning diligently around your safety concerns , there is plenty to consider before you make the leap to solo travel.

But what if there was an easier way to dip your toes into making your wanderlust dreams come true? Or what if there was a way to make solo travel less…solo?

Enter travel groups and tours. Now that solo female travel has become more popular than ever, new companies are emerging each year to offer women an alternative: traveling in a group. Group trips and tours vary widely, but a common thread is that they offer women the opportunity to meet other travelers and explore the world together without the added pressure of planning.

These are my top picks:

Table of Contents

1. BMTM Adventures

namibia road trip spitzkoppe

My own BMTM Adventures obviously makes the list! So far, we’ve taken over a hundred women on trips all around the world, from swimming with whales in French Polynesia to backpacking across glacial landscapes in Alaska and Patagonia. Focusing on unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations, this is the ideal choice for travelers who aren’t afraid to venture outside their comfort zone. I put my heart and soul into planning each and every trip.

In 2025, we are heading to Namibia and Botswana ! This highly sought-after Africa tour has an astrophotography and wildlife focus, and since I hand-pick each lodge, activity, and local guide on every trip, you can expect warm hospitality and a truly immersive experience, regardless of which adventure you choose.

2. Wander Women Retreats

best solo female travel groups and tours

Wander Women Retreats, founded by Alex in Wanderland , offers empowering experiences for solo female travelers. Its retreats combine wellness, adventure, and cultural exploration, providing a holistic approach to travel. Whether it’s practicing yoga on the serene beaches of Bali or diving in the deep seas of the Maldives , Wander Women Retreats create an environment in which personal growth and meaningful connections thrive.

This year, Wander Women Retreats will head to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and also offer two unique trips to Egypt! You can also book a virtual retreat if you want a taste of Wander Women before hopping on an in-person tour.

3. TBA Escapes

best solo female travel groups and tours

TBA Escapes specializes in boutique and luxury experiences designed for adventurous solo female travelers . Its itineraries span unique destinations worldwide, allowing participants to embark on thrilling activities, such as sandboarding in Morocco or hiking Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa .

I love that TBA Escapes includes a whole page dedicated to testimonials from past participants . These excited me about the trip offerings, because the reviews are absolutely glowing! TBA Escapes is currently accepting reservations for its 2024 offerings to the Galápagos Islands, Egypt, Jordan, South Africa, and Morocco. How can a girl choose?!

4. Girls That Scuba

best solo female travel groups and tours

Girls That Scuba is a vibrant community and travel resource for women scuba divers. Alongside its informative articles and resources, it organizes dive trips catered specifically to solo female travelers. These trips provide the opportunity to explore breathtaking dive sites while connecting with fellow female divers who share the same passion for the underwater world.

The beauty of Girls That Scuba is its wide range of offerings for every skill level. You can join a freediving training retreat in Mexico , or dive head first (pun intended) into the Red Sea in Jordan for a fully immersive experience. So immerse yourself in the beauty of the ocean and form lifelong friendships on a Girls That Scuba trip.

5. Trafalgar

solo travel female packages usa

First Name:

Trafalgar’s women’s travel division specializes in curating enriching group experiences for solo female travelers and tend to cater to a boomer crowd. Its itineraries focus on cultural immersion, encounters with residents, and unique insights into each destination. From exploring the ancient ruins of Greece to discovering the vibrant markets of Morocco, Trafalgar offers a supportive and inclusive environment for female travelers seeking more comforts on their trips.

The history and culture enthusiast in me craves being fully immersed in a culture the way Trafalgar promises. Some of my favorite travel experiences include hands-on experiences like this, so I recommend Trafalgar to anyone most excited about the opportunity to be surrounded by new sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and more!

Upcoming trips include Ireland, France, Egypt, Jordan, and Scandinavia, and the website makes it super easy to choose one, because you can see recent reviews and a full itinerary for each trip before you book.

6. REI Adventures – Women’s Trips

best solo female travel groups and tours

REI Adventures has a range of outdoorsy trips designed specifically for women. They’re all about hands-on activities and active exploration, and the itineraries are tailored to empower women through physical challenges. Try backpacking for the first time , or a kayaking adventure with REI Adventures, and join a group of like-minded women ready to conquer new horizons.

Since trekking alone can be anxiety-inducing for many women, REI Adventures is an opportunity to connect with the outdoors without worrying about safety. My women love hiking but often get spooked when out on a trail by themselves, which keeps many from doing longer backpacking trips . That’s why REI Adventures makes my list of the best solo female travel groups and tours. Upcoming trips include hiking in Bryce Canyon , backpacking along the Pacific Crest Trail, and kayaking in the San Juan Islands.

7. AdventureWomen

best solo female travel groups and tours

AdventureWomen is a pioneer in women-only adventure travel (as the name implies), offering a wide range of active and immersive tours for solo female travelers. From hiking the iconic Inca Trail to cultural explorations in Iceland , AdventureWomen provides opportunities for women of all ages to discover the world while building lifelong friendships. Embrace your adventurous spirit with AdventureWomen, and join hundreds of other women in making their travel dreams come true.

Adventure Women has the widest range of offerings I’ve seen anywhere else. You can choose from trips on nearly every continent. Some of the upcoming trips, like this cruise in Croatia , are more laid-back. Then there are more intense adventures, like this trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro .

8. Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expeditions

best solo female travel groups and tours

Intrepid Travel’s Women’s Expeditions focuses on empowering women while providing unique cultural experiences and opportunities for personal growth. Whether you’re exploring the ancient ruins of Jordan or discovering the vibrant cities of India, these expeditions offer a supportive and educational environment for female travelers. Intrepid offers the chance to join a diverse group of women from around the world and embark on a life-changing adventure.

Intrepid has a great reputation for organizing meaningful trips that inspire connection, which is why its expeditions excite me so much! There’s even a 12-day trip to Iran , which is the most unusual offering I’ve seen so far.

9. Wild Women Expeditions

best solo female travel groups and tours

Feeling a little…wild? Wild Women Expeditions specializes in immersive adventure travel experiences, such as kayaking in the Canadian wilderness or hiking in the Himalayas . These expeditions allow solo female travelers to challenge themselves in awe-inspiring natural environments. Discover your inner wild woman and join a community of adventurous souls on a journey that will leave you feeling empowered and inspired.

Like me, you might feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of trips available through Wild Women Expeditions. On the destinations page , you’ll see options all over the globe, so choosing just one might be tricky. There’s even a trip to Antarctica , which is a rare find!

10. Purposeful Nomad

This one is for you if you’re keen on diving deep into a new culture. Purposeful Nomad offers immersive travel experiences that combine adventure, culture, and social impact. You can explore vibrant markets in India, participate in community-based projects in Peru, and so much more. Purposeful Nomad also provides opportunities to volunteer during your trip, adding an extra layer of intention and meaning. You’ll get to connect with a community of like-minded women seeking meaningful travel experiences, too.

I love the unique social impact model of Purposeful Nomad, and the upcoming trips look incredible. From the Ngorongoro Crater to the Galápagos Islands , there are plenty of options to choose from.

When it comes to finding the best solo female travel groups and tours, the world truly is your oyster. Traveling completely alone is an incredible experience, but sometimes a girl needs to be in community with others while on the road.

Each group or tour brings its unique flair, catering to different travel styles and preferences. Whether you’re looking for adrenaline-pumping adventures, cultural immersions, or personal growth, those listed here are designed to enhance your journey.

So, which one will you choose?

Atlas adventures!!

Mimi Leiper says

I wanted to let you know about my experience with Girls Guide to the World before you recommend them to anyone else. It has been a nightmare…

I signed up to go on what I thought would be the trip of a lifetime to sail in Thailand in April 2024. The trip was two 44 foot catamarans with a private chef, 8 women and two captains. Before I signed up for the trip I spoke with the owner at length and was assured that everything would be perfect. The trip would be very safe with the two boats and so many participants.

Only one other person signed up for the trip and because the owner of the company did not want to lose her deposit, she decided that there would be only 1 boat, two paying travelers and that she would go along with her cousin. I do not feel it is even safe to sail around in a small sailboat alone with just a few women. When I sent an email to her in January expressing my concerns she ignored it. Only when I informed her that I would not be paying the balance of my trip did she contact me. She has continued to refused to cancel the trip, refused to refund or transfer my $2600 deposit to another trip and then sent an email out offering a discount of $1400 for anyone else to take my place. That $1400 discount was actually part of my deposit.

The website clearly states that if In the highly unusual event that Girls’ Guide to the World has to reschedule or cancel a trip, we will offer you the option of a) Joining us on the rescheduled trip at a later date (we will make every effort to pick new dates that work for everyone), b) applying your payment(s) towards a different trip, or c) receiving a full refund. Based on the fact that this trip was not at all what was advertised I believe it should have been cancelled and I should have been given the opportunity to choose a, b or c. Instead they decided to keep my deposit and move forward with one paying traveler.

This company clearly cares only about the bottom line in my opinion. I would never recommend them ever to anyone! Buyer beware!

So sorry to hear about your negative experience! I’ve gone ahead and removed them as a recommended company on the post.

Best Places for Women's Solo Travel in 2024

Women over 50 in travel

Women are the primary travel decision makers in travel, making 80-85% of all travel decisions. Women 50+ represent over $15 trillion in purchasing power and are experiencing the largest population growth over the next 10 years, according to a recent study conducted in the US by the   Coca-Cola Group and Mass Mutual. JourneyWoman’s previous recent global study,   “The Influence and Affluence of Solo Women 50+ in Travel” , published in December 2022, showed that 70% of women over 50 felt ignored and undervalued by the travel industry, despite representing trillions in spending power. In addition, an April 2023 JourneyWoman survey, “ JourneyWoman Women 50+ 2023 Travel Outlook”   shows that women over 50 are leading the trend of off-season travel to reduce travel costs, focusing on less-travelled places and longer trips, with 81% planning to travel more than two weeks per year. The study revealed that 96% of women are the primary travel decision makers in their households, and that 51% spend more than US$3,000 a week on travel.

For your next solo adventure, consider exploring waterfalls in Iceland, rice fields in Indonesia, beaches in Thailand and more.

Perhaps you have a bucket list of places you've always wanted to travel at the ready but you just keep waiting for the right person to go with you. But if your friends are busy, you just broke up with your partner and you're not feeling a family vacation, you don't have to wait to embark on a new adventure – just go solo .

Traveling by yourself, even as a woman, is not as challenging or scary as you might think. There are plenty of benefits: You don't have to adhere to anyone else's schedule, budget or food preferences, so you can truly prioritize yourself. Solo travel means doing whatever you want whenever you want, while seeing the places that you most want to visit. Adventuring alone as a woman can empower you to see the world on your terms.

Whether you're concerned about safety or seeking companionship, there are plenty of places around the globe to consider for your next solo trip. U.S. News has compiled this list of top solo travel destinations (and helpful tips) with expertise from women who have traversed the globe by themselves and loved it.

Barcelona, Spain

With a visit to Barcelona , immerse yourself in the local culture at your leisure, whether you want to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants or go cheer at a football (soccer) game. Writer Mona Gable says, "Barcelona is a place of wonder − medieval neighborhoods, sunny beaches, and world-class museums, not to mention Antoni Gaudí's celebrated architecture." She enjoyed exploring the Mediterranean port city, especially because of its walkability and easy-to-navigate transportation system with metro lines and buses. She also noted feeling safe on her own: "As a female traveler, I felt perfectly at ease wandering many neighborhoods alone, even at late hours, when Catalans famously dine out."

Travel tip: Gable says it's best to avoid touristy Las Ramblas – Barcelona's main thoroughfare – except to see La Boqueria, the city's legendary food market.

African elephant (Loxodonta africana) Calves playing. Okovango Delta, Botswana

Botswana is well known for African wildlife safaris , where travelers might encounter elephants, zebras, rhinos, lions and cheetahs while glamping in luxury tents and dining on gourmet food. "Wildlife travel offers an outstanding combination of camaraderie, safety and autonomy," says Darcie Smith, owner of Great Expeditions Travel . She recommends Botswana's green season (November to March) for solo female travelers; at this time of year the single supplement surcharge is waived at many safari camps, which offers an excellent value and means you're more likely to meet other solo travelers. It is also peak season for birding, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife in the lush landscape.

Many camps will send someone to meet guests upon arrival to help you navigate airports or transfers. In Smith's experience, camp guests are also escorted to their rooms at night, for an added wildlife safety element. "Solo female travelers can enjoy daily shared safari activities in intimate camps that encourage social gatherings with full independence to design the itinerary around what's best for you," she says.

Travel tip: Smith recommends making your social media accounts private when you travel so strangers can't track your location as well as learning about the customs of your destination. "This will help avoid accidentally coming across as forward or flirtatious based on local standards," she explains. "For example, while long eye contact may be considered a sign of self-confidence or being polite at home, it may come across as flirtatious in your new destination."

Picture yourself indulging in pizza and gelato, visiting world-famous museums, touring picturesque wineries, and shopping at designer boutiques – all of that is at your fingertips in Italy , writer Martha McCully's go-to travel destination. "Italians want to share their culture and it's part of their personality to welcome you," she says. "Plus, the food and wine are outrageously divine."

The idea that traveling solo means you will be alone is a misconception, according to McCully. "It's simply not true," she says. "Book a group tour at your destination, or DM a friend from your past on Instagram, which is what I did in Bologna." There are plenty of unique ways to meet fellow travelers in Italy; she recommends signing up for a cooking class in Bologna through Taste of Italy, a food tour by Curious Appetite or a painting class with Plein Air Tuscany. "The idea is you will be with like-minded travelers and someone else is doing all the organizing," McCully explains.

Travel tip: McCully suggests sticking to your wellness routine while on the road to keep healthy habits. "I like to take my rituals with me," she says. "When I ground myself with what I know makes me feel good physically and mentally, it's like I'm living in another country, not just visiting."

With glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs galore, the dramatic landscapes of Iceland make it a must-visit destination. The "Land of Fire and Ice" is also known for puffins, its Viking history and women's empowerment, with the country's reputation as a champion of gender equality.

"Iceland is a favorite destination for female solo travelers because it is easily one of the safest countries in the world," says Jenny Ly, professional travel blogger at Go Wanderly . Iceland has one of the world's lowest crime rates and no animal predators dangerous to humans – just prepare for challenging weather and exercise caution if you plan to do any driving. Ly's itinerary recommendations include whale watching, with nearly a dozen types of whales navigating Icelandic waters; visiting Vatnajökull Glacier's ice caves; and chasing the northern lights in the darker months (October to April).

Travel tip: Ly encourages solo female travelers to not let the lack of a travel companion prevent them from exploring the world. "It can be both empowering and rewarding for women to travel solo, at least once in their life," she says. "While traveling alone can be riskier than traveling with others, it can also be more fun and gratifying." Her tip is to always be aware of your surroundings.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

solo travel female packages usa

While some women may shy away from traveling to Mexico due to safety concerns, travel blogger Jeanine Romo of lewildexplorer.com , who has ventured solo to many countries, recommends visiting the charming town of San Miguel de Allende . "I decided to go on my own and had such a wonderful time," she says. "The people are friendly, the hospitality is amazing, and there are so many things to do if you love art, incredible food, and incredible architecture." San Miguel de Allende is a great option for women travelers because the city center is easily walkable and Uber is available, which Romo says made her feel safe because she could always call a ride.

Travel tip: For women traveling by themselves, Romo advises doing research on transportation options (such as local buses, metro lines and ride-sharing app availability) before you arrive. "I like to know how walkable the city I'm visiting is," says Romo. "This helps me feel so much more confident when navigating a new city."

New Zealand

solo travel female packages usa

From pristine beaches on the North Island to snowy mountains on the South Island – and all kinds of geological wonders in between – the diversity of New Zealand is a major draw for tourists. Travelers can learn about the indigenous Māori culture, visit a sheep farm or go sailing in Auckland , among an abundance of other incredible things to do in this island nation.

Travel blogger Nina Ragusa of whereintheworldisnina.com enjoys visiting because of the welcoming culture, outdoor adventure and feeling of safety. "Traveling New Zealand as a solo woman is quite easy, and if it's your first trip solo, this would be a good country to start in," she says. Ragusa spent a month camping in a van by herself and said she never had to worry about her safety, even in more remote areas. "I went on hikes solo, some of them deep into the mountains for miles and miles, and was either alone or passing other tourists or friendly kiwis to wave hello to," she says. Ragusa adds that New Zealand is not the cheapest travel destination, but her personal recommendation for saving money on longer trips here is to rent – or buy and later sell – a van to live in.

Travel tip: Ragusa recommends steering clear of the outskirts of the bigger cities (particularly if you do travel by van). She warns that, as in most urban destinations around the world, those parts of New Zealand are where you're more likely to run into trouble.

El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

People hiking in a row on the ice of Perito Moreno glacier, Los Glaciares national park, Santa Cruz province, Patagonia Argentina

For an outdoor adventure in South America, Argentine Patagonia offers pristine ice hiking, backpacking, kayaking, trekking and wildlife viewing. Nicol Gillum-Thomas, an African-American solo female traveler whose mission is to encourage women to live life as an adventure, enjoyed her time in the town of El Calafate. "El Calafate, Argentina, was the destination that seemed the most off-putting in my imagination, but became the trip with the most adventure, awe-inspiring beauty and ease," she says.

Travel tip: Gillum-Thomas recommends a stay at the América del Sur Hostel Calafate, saying she appreciated the clean accommodations and interesting guests.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Old City of Dubrovnik situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO. Clinging to a rock, encased by a girdle of ramparts and lapped by a turquoise sea, Croatia’s famous town is fully worthy of its title “Pearl of the Adriatic”.

If you dream of a getaway that includes picturesque beaches and crystal-clear water, Croatia is the perfect spot to explore. In Dubrovnik , the ancient city walls and medieval architecture of Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set a particularly gorgeous scene when the sun goes down. Tamara Williams, owner of solo female travel-focused blog My Elated Odyssey , says the unmatched beauty of the surrounding sea and mountains is only one reason to plan a trip here.

"The locals are some of the nicest people I have ever met," Williams says. "They truly made it feel like a second home. They spoke English well, so no need to worry about a language barrier." She adds that this Balkan country is also considerably more affordable than destinations in Western Europe.

Travel tip: For solo female travelers, Williams suggests staying in the Lapad neighborhood or near Old Town. "Both are full of cafes, bars and shopping to keep you busy," she says.

Svalbard, Norway

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) sniffs air while walking on rocky shore of Malmgren Island on foggy evening. | Location: Malmgren Island, Svalbard, Norway.

You can't go wrong in Norway , with breathtaking fjords, fascinating wildlife, scenic railways, outdoor adventure and the chance to glimpse the northern lights . Jurga Rubinovaite, founder of the travel blog Full Suitcase , says you won't want to miss Svalbard: a Norwegian archipelago located approximately 800 miles from the North Pole. "It is one of the most unique nature destinations in the world," she says. "Despite being so far north in the Arctic, it's extremely easy to visit and is also a great and safe destination for solo female travelers."

The main town, Longyearbyen, is the focal point of activities in Svalbard, which range from hiking and boat tours in the summer to winter pursuits such as ice cave visits and snowmobiling. "Because of the presence of polar bears, everything you do in Svalbard requires booking a guided tour, so you are always in safe hands," Rubinovaite explains. "Longyearbyen town itself is very lively and safe, with lots of accommodations, restaurants, shops, and a few museums, all within easy walking distance from each other."

Travel tip: For women traveling alone, Rubinovaite advises thorough research in advance of your trip to this Arctic locale; staying in hotels, rather than private accommodations; and booking guided tours or looking for a travel buddy when venturing out to very remote places.

Ireland, County Clare, Lahinch: tourist gazing at the majestic Cliffs of Moher at sunset in late spring.

Head to Ireland for a memorable solo getaway complete with rolling emerald-green hills, fairytale castles and Irish coffee. Experienced traveler Kelie Fiala of the Vacations Planned blog ranks this European country at the top of her list for solo travel spots. "Many attractions in Ireland are wonderful for solo travelers because they offer peaceful spots to stop and enjoy the gorgeous views, but also provide plenty of opportunities to meet friendly people at cafes and other points of interest," she says.

Fiala appreciates the nightlife and music scene of Ireland as much as the history and scenery. She suggests experiencing some of the country's pubs, even if you're a woman traveling alone, since you'll almost always find live music and friendly people. "Even if you start out by yourself, you'll easily find that you're having great conversations in no time," she says.

Travel tip: Fiala warns that for solo travelers, especially women, it's best to be careful how much you drink and leave the situation if you ever feel uncomfortable. But she also encourages women to not be afraid to have a chat. "You could hear some great stories, and make a new friend," she says.

Thai traditional wooden longtail boat and beautiful sand Railay Beach in Krabi province. Ao Nang, Thailand.

Beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly people, exotic animals and floating markets are just some of the incredible things that you can experience in Thailand . Loredana Gogoescu, head of content for Destguides.com , says she felt safe in Thailand as soon as she arrived. "Thai people are hospitable and kind," she says. "Moreover, as a solo traveler, I was surprisingly never alone. I had to book a private room for myself at one point just to get a breather, as I was constantly meeting new people!"

Travel tip: If you're apprehensive about exploring a new place on your own, especially if you've never traveled abroad before, Gogoescu recommends sorting out all the logistics like accommodations and transportation in advance so it's easier to acclimate once you get there. She adds, "If you're afraid of being alone, join different apps like Bumble and Facebook groups for the destination you're traveling to, to see if you can match up with other solo female travelers who will be in the area at the same time as you."

Netherlands

Amsterdam buildings at sunrise

Nailah Hayward of TheresSoMuchToSee.com says the Netherlands is a superb option for first-time solo female travelers, based on ease of transportation, overall safety, the variety of things to do and other factors. "The Netherlands comes out high on all of these areas," she says. "And after multiple visits to the country, traveling through big cities and small towns, I always felt extremely safe." With the country's extensive train system, in addition to local trams and bike lanes, navigating the Netherlands by yourself doesn't pose too great a burden. Hayward also appreciates the ease of communicating with locals as an English speaker, since most people speak English in addition to Dutch.

"Whether you are into the arts scene, outdoor activities, luxury experiences, cultural exploration or culinary delights, the Netherlands has a huge variety of activities to dive into," Hayward says. "All of these elements make the Netherlands a place that I enthusiastically recommend for solo women travelers."

Travel tip: Don't carry cash. Hayward says most transactions can be done electronically, so there's no need for frequent trips to the ATM.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Luxury family travel influencer Irina Claire Bromberg suggests Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands as a top spot for solo female travel, partially because of its high safety rating from the U.S. Department of State. There's also no shortage of activities in this Caribbean destination, with Bromberg calling Stingray City a must. "The stingrays are peaceful and gentle," she says. "They glide along the ocean floor and you're free to observe and even play with them in their natural habitat." She also recommends soaking up some sun at the renowned Seven Mile Beach .

Grand Cayman is also a foodie paradise, according to Bromberg. "The vibrant dishes are as tasty as they are exciting, representing the fascinating mix of cultures and traditions that make the island so unique," she says. Her suggestions for food to try include the classic Cayman-style lobster, coconut shrimp and Johnny cakes.

Travel tip: Bromberg recommends checking the U.S. Department of State safety rating and other solo travelers' experiences prior to booking a trip.

View of the Galata Tower and The Suleymaniye Mosque at dusk in Istanbul, Turkey

Chart your course for Istanbul , the only city in the world that straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. This anomaly is one of many features making the Turkish city stand out as a unique destination; you'll get to experience its Byzantine architecture, Ottoman cuisine and landmarks like the Grand Bazaar on a trip here. Farihah Fuaad, a Muslim solo travel expert and founder of MuslimSoloTravel.com , says, "It offers the best of both worlds – East and West, Europe and Asia, modern and ancient – and lots of surprises." This lively, fast-paced metropolis is also rich in history and culture, with remnants of bygone eras visible in the skyline of Istanbul, according to Fuuad.

For solo travelers, there are endless opportunities for memorable experiences. "Wherever you go in Istanbul, multiple surprises await you at the corner of every street, its cobblestone alleys, or within the maze-like structure in Grand Bazaar," Fuaad says. The network of easy and convenient public transportation options also makes Istanbul a great choice for women traveling solo.

Travel tip: For first-time solo female travelers, Fuaad suggests taking time to adjust to being on your own: "Start small, by venturing to your next neighboring town or city first, or any city in your country first before you make the leap into solo traveling abroad." She adds, "Don't do things you're not comfortable with. Listen to your gut feelings – they're always right!"

Bali, Indonesia

solo travel female packages usa

For a tropical island escape, Bali is undeniably magical. Its natural beauty spans volcanoes, waterfalls and stunning beaches, as well as sprawling rice fields, diverse nightlife and breathtaking temples. Katie Caf, travel blogger at KatieCafTravel.com , who has been traveling solo full time for the past year and a half, says Bali is by far her favorite place to visit. "The Balinese people are very respectful towards female travelers, there's no street harassment based on gender like you might find in other locations, and while no place is perfect, Bali just feels very safe as a woman," Caf says. She adds that, although Indonesia is a conservative country, she found that women traveling there aren't expected to cover up except in temples or other sacred religious sites.

Travel tip: Caf recommends that travelers always use ride-sharing apps like Uber, Gojek and Grab rather than hailing cabs off the street, since the apps' tracking features make them much safer to use for solo female travelers in foreign countries. Some of these sites also allow you to share your route with chosen contacts for added safety.

Young woman tourist in sun hat and white dress standing in front of Eiffel Tower in Paris at sunset. Travel in France, tourism concept. High quality photo

Paris is one of the most iconic destinations in Europe for any traveler. Antoinette Harris, founder and owner of travel blog Frolic & Courage , considers the "City of Love" a superb option for women traveling solo due to its cuisine, cultural attractions and hands-on activities of all sorts. "I consider Paris the city of self-love because it has everything solo women travelers need to care for themselves and their interests," Harris says.

With the flexibility of traveling on your own, you can plan the Paris trip of your dreams. Depending on what you're interested in, you may choose to learn about French cooking, immerse yourself in the Louvre , attend an opera at the historic Palais Garnier or browse local shops, as Harris has done. "Uninhibited by the demands or requests of others, I was able to really take the time to focus on who I am, what I wanted and what sparks joy and life in my spirit," she says. "Traveling to Paris taught me how to truly enjoy spending time solo."

Travel tip: One of Harris' top tips is to not bring more than you can carry, as you won't always find someone to help you with your luggage if an escalator breaks and you have to take the stairs. "By keeping only the essentials, you're able to move quickly to and from your destination without worrying too much about being a target for crime," Harris says. She also recommends downloading an offline map you can reference even without internet connection and sharing your itinerary with family members or friends who could help in a sticky situation.

New York City

solo travel female packages usa

It's hard to beat the allure of the twinkling lights of Times Square , award-winning Broadway shows and Lady Liberty . Melanie Musson, a travel expert with AutoInsurance.org , loves taking a solo trip to New York City , saying she doesn't even have the chance to feel lonely because the hustle and bustle of the big city keeps her sufficiently distracted.

Musson says that, while there are risks for visitors in any city, the odds of anything scary happening to you in New York are low as long as you take appropriate precautions. "New York City prioritizes tourist safety because they know they’d lose this valuable industry if visitors had frequent bad experiences," she explains, adding that you may be surprised how friendly the local residents are. "They're usually happy to help you identify the right subway line to take or bus to catch. They'll probably even give you tips on the best places to eat or things to see."

Travel tip: Musson's pre-trip tip is to check crime reports in the destination you're heading to and stay within the safe areas. "Trust your gut and get out of the area if you don't feel safe," she cautions.

Oct 2004

The city of Singapore is known for being clean, green and safe for travelers – as well as expensive. Singapore boasts impressive architecture, the iconic Singapore sling cocktail, street food markets and luxury shopping malls. Daina Cohen, editor at WorldlyKnown.com , says, "Singapore is a fantastic destination for solo women travelers because of its vibrant, yet safe culture and exciting sights." On a solo trip to this Southeast Asian city, you can experience the unique blend of diverse cultures and cuisines, Cohen says, in addition to other benefits. "It's easy to navigate with plenty of public transportation options, plus an excellent healthcare system, which makes it a great choice for those who want to travel solo," Cohen notes. Tourists should research Singapore's laws – such as a ban on chewing gum – before traveling there to avoid fines.

Travel tip: Cohen advises staying in a hostel (which often have options for women-only dorms) or renting an Airbnb for more privacy. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with the city's public transportation system prior to arrival.

14 Best Destinations for Women Who Are Traveling Solo

Whether you're planning your first trip or looking for your next international adventure, these places are both fun and safe.

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

If you live in a big city or have been overloaded at work lately, you may be long overdue for a relaxing vacation. While a much-needed girls' weekend getaway is always a great option for lasting memories and tons of LOLs, you may want to consider taking some time for yourself and planning a solo trip .

We consulted experts in travel from Fora, a modern travel agency , who have helped several clients meet and fulfill their solo travel aspirations. We also considered recommendations from our Good Housekeeping team, which has been evaluating destinations worldwide for the Family Travel Awards . Together, we've compiled this list of tried-and-true solo travel destinations for women.

If you’re still a little concerned about safety while navigating these cities on your own, not to worry because we also checked the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2023 Global Peace Index , which vets each country to measure their "peacefulness" as well as the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories .

As always, when traveling alone you should carry out your own research on each destination and take proper precautions to keep yourself safe. Otherwise, happy travels!

Iceland tops the Global Peace Index for the most peaceful country in the world. Even the U.S. government notes that Iceland has a " low crime rate ." It also lends itself to adventure lovers with its many natural attractions. Top nature destinations include Black Sand Beach, Ring Road, Blue Lagoon, ice caps, and steaming geysers. Just make sure to enjoy some time in the beautiful city of Reykjavik , as well.

TIP: Get more of a feel for the local culture by looking to residents as resources. "Iceland is an extremely safe country with very friendly locals who love sharing information about their beautiful country with visitors," Fora Advisor Kara Kassuba told Good Housekeeping. "During your time there, you’ll likely meet many people and find yourself engaged in interesting conversations with non-stop learning opportunities."

Denmark is well known for its stunning castles, vibrant towns and villages, as well as famous natural-occurring attractions. The country is also vetted as safe and secure, ranking second on the 2023 Global Peace Index .

GH Staffer Emma Seymour recently traveled to Copenhagen on her own and expressed that the destination was ideal for biking and had a ton of great restaurants and shops. " I biked everywhere and it was really easy to rent bikes (there are a bunch of bikes just lying around that you can use with an app!)," she said. "I highly recommend biking through Christiania and eating at the vegan restaurants there. It can feel awkward to embrace going to bars or restaurants alone, but it's the best way to see a city."

TIP: Consider staying in a hostel for added security and the opportunity to connect with other travelers. "I stayed at Steel House hostel , which was so fun," Seymour said. "I had a private room that was small, but perfectly organized. The hostel had a ton of social events too and was very family friendly. It felt super safe."

the mexican flag flies over the zocalo, the main square in mexico city the metropolitan cathedral faces the square, also referred to as constitution square

The key to solo travel in Mexico is to pick cities that are easy to navigate and welcoming to tourists. Fora Advisor Caryn Ruocco suggests Mexico City, Mexico. "The city is safe, especially in neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa and Polanco," she told Good Housekeeping, noting that "these areas are particularly well-patrolled." The city is also very walkable and offers an impressive art scene for those looking to immerse themselves in Mexican culture. Another Mexican city solo travelers should add to their list for its warm and fun energy? Sayulita.

TIP: Treat your resort as a home base for your activities and travel. "You should treat yourself to a little R&R at a resort after a solo adventure and end your time with a stop at Susurros de Corazón or Four Seasons Punta Mita to treat yourself to a night in luxury and a visit to the spa,” Ruehl said.

cliffs of moher in ireland

It's hard to beat the beauty of Ireland. The U.S. government notes that the country has a "low rate of violent crime" so traveling on your own should feel secure and comfortable. GH staffer Kaitlyn Phoenix took one of her first solo vacations to the country, noting that it is a must-visit. “The people in Ireland were super welcoming. I was young and trying to save money at the time so mostly stayed at bed and breakfasts, but I splurged for a night in Ballyseede Castle and loved it so much,” Phoenix said.

GH staffer Stephanie Dolgoff also loved how easy it was to get around Dublin on her own."I stayed at a tiny, cheap little place called Parkway Guesthouse . Very spare but cute and nice and the proprietor was a lovely, helpful guy," Dolgoff said. "Dublin is a walkable place and I could get most anywhere on foot from there, although it wasn’t directly in one of the trendy neighborhoods."

Phoenix also noted that Ireland has no shortage of outdoor attractions. " The Cliffs of Moher are a must-see if you’re in Ireland," she said. "If you’re into nature walks and gardens, the Blarney Castle grounds are nice to explore so it’s not just about kissing the Blarney Stone."

TIP: If you opt to rent a car in Ireland "keep in mind that in addition to driving on the left side of the road, you’ll have to navigate a lot of one-lane roads (like the Conor Pass) where you have to pull over if another car comes by from the opposite direction," Phoenix said.

As if the beaches, architecture and food were not already a major draw, Spain ranks in the top 35 on the 2023 Global Peace Index , making it one of the countries in the world that has maintained peace over the last year. Solo travelers will enjoy the country's diverse terrain, offering walkable cities, vast deserts and calming countrysides.

TIP: Enjoy tapas for one sitting barside or enjoy street food in a nearby park as an easy way to meet others.

Though Hawaii may often get overlooked for solo travel due to its reputation as a romantic or family destination, the island of Hawaiʻi (you might know it as The Big Island) is definitely worth a visit. Whether you spend time on the Kona side filled with resorts or the tropical and lush Hilo side, you'll get to experience the beauty of the diverse landscape. Musts on the to-do list include the volcano park, horseback riding, and swimming at night with the manta rays, says Fora Advisor Melissa Friedman-Levine .

TIP: If you want to travel with a four-legged friend, book your stay at Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club , which allows all sizes of dogs without any pet fee. Solo travelers can treat their pups to dog-friendly programming, including   SUP paddle and surf lessons for dogs  and  pet portraits with a local dog photographer . Seattle, Washington

You might actually be sleepless in Seattle — just because there's so much to do. Solo travelers will feel right at home in Pike Place Market , where they can grab breakfast and lunch from one of the many stands, and pick up gifts and unique souvenirs. Pike Place Market is also home to Golden Age Collectables, the oldest comic book store.

In a nearby area of the city is a different collection of attractions to see. "I was surprised that The Museum of Glass , Museum of Pop Culture , and the Space Needle neighbor each other. So, plan to spend the day visiting all three," said Karen Cicero , Contributing Travel Editor.

Another tip? "Take an excursion for the day or overnight to Olympic National Park, which has a lake, rainforest and rugged coastline," Cicero added.

Another GH staffer, Amanda Constantine , said "one of the best things about Seattle is the coffee culture, which is also perfect for solo travel!" She noted that the shops can easily be found on most corners and she tried more than a few. "Some of my favorites were the original Starbucks, Victrola Coffee Roasters and Analog."

TIP: July and August are the least rainy months to visit while November and December are the wettest. "I visited last July and there wasn't a drop of rain and the temperatures were in the 70s — it was perfection," said Cicero.

Boasting over 1,200 islands, Croatia is the perfect destination for anyone who loves sailing or outdoor water activities. Its coastal cities also feature gorgeous cobblestone streets, adorable cafés and artisan boutiques. If that isn't enough, the country's low crime rate also makes it an amazing option for solo travel.

TIP: Game of Thrones fans will want to check out Dubrovnik, where several of the scenes from the series were shot. There are also tons of options for Game of Thrones tours where travelers can visit film sites and learn more about what went on behind the scenes.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Believe it or not, the Big Easy has tons to offer solo travelers. Take your pick from jamming to live entertainment on The French Quarter, visiting plenty of historical sites, and indulging in excellent cajun and creole cuisine. Exploring the quarter, filled with live music, is the way to do it. You'll also want to get tickets to Preservation Hall , which is home to classic New Orleans jazz music. Other notable stops for wandering include the Garden District for home tours, Magazine Street for restaurants and shops, and the Arts + Warehouse District , which features the Ogden Museum for Southern Art and a variety of interesting local galleries on Julia Street.

TIP: Book a dinner at Mosquito Supper Club or Dakar Nola , which both have shared tables. "As a solo diner I’ve always had an interesting evening with my paired dining partners,” Kassuba said.

spring and autumn pavilions, lotus pond, kahosiung

You may come for the hot springs, festivals and breathtaking landscape, but you'll want to stay for the variety of places to shop and dine. Taiwan's diverse offerings make it the ideal location for solo exploration.

TIP : Stop by the night markets for affordable and delicious cuisine. Linjiang Street (Tonghua) Night Market has been said by reviewers to have plenty of options, but be sure to have cash on hand as not all vendors will take card.

If you're looking for a destination that is as culturally and spiritually rich as it is beautiful, Cambodia is a great place to go. Your money will also go a long way as one US dollar is equal to about 4,100 Cambodian riel. Some highlights of Cambodia include gorgeous temples, eclectic and diverse cities, relaxing beaches, and luxury hotels.

TIP: Make sure to visit the spectacular temples of Angkor Wat , which Fora Advisor Alexandra Hepworth described as "a sight to behold."

Washington, DC

If you're traveling solo for the first time, DC is your ticket to fun. It's easy to access by train or plane, depending on where you're coming from and it has an easy-to-navigate public transportation system. Many museums and historical sites are free to enter, so there's no pressure to stay for hours. That means you can hop from the gemstone exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History to the remarkable collections at the National Portrait Gallery all in one day — and still have time to grab lunch from one of the food trucks near the National Mall. "Be sure to make it over to the Georgetown neighborhood during your trip," suggested Cicero. "You'll find wonderful restaurants with many types of cuisine plus cute one-of-a-kind shops and coffee bars. There's even a cat cafe!"

TIP: Even though the attractions are free, you need to make reservations in advance to enter; it's easy to do through the websites.

woman walking on the bridge in the jungle of costa rica

For a beachside vacation, Costa Rica is just the place to go. Not only does it have clear blue waters, but you can also visit a national park or conservation areas. Costa Rica is also a less expensive alternative to some European cities, but is just as easy to get around.

TIP: Join in on group activities. The town of Santa Teresa "attracts a lot of solo travelers and digital nomads, so it's easy to meet people," according to Fora Advisor Ronit Margolis . "It has a vibrant food scene, with plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal alone or with new friends. You will feel a strong sense of community as everyone is so friendly."

TIP: Beyond experiencing the great outdoors, learn a bit about the history and culture by exploring the Kigali Genocide Memorial and multiple art galleries .

Travellers on the Choquequiaro Trek in Peru

Got the urge for adventure, but no one to do it with? Over 50% of travelers on our trips are travelling solo.

This is why travelling as part of our small group tours has its perks. We’ve got expert local leaders who can't wait to show you around, ready-made friends who are itching to explore (just like you), and optional single supplements if you want a room all to yourself. All you have to do is turn up with a smile and a passport: we’ll handle the rest.

All our group trips are perfectly suited to those of you traveling solo, but here are a few favorites as rated by our previous solo travelers.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

When you’re all by yourself, it’s easy to fall into the typical tourist traps. You wander within a few blocks of your hotel, see a few of the big sights and that’s about it. But solo travel on a group tour isn’t like that. Each of our trips has an expert local leader who knows every backstreet bar, cool tapas joint and hidden gallery. They’ll give you tips for your free time exploring, and introduce you to locals.

Go solo, but not alone. That’s our motto. The average Intrepid Travel trip has about ten people on it – people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world. It’s like a hostel dorm room that travels with you (minus the smell and the weird naked guy). You’ve got ready-made friends for a karaoke session in Vietnam, a canoeing adventure in New Zealand or a chat over chai at the breakfast table. For a solo traveler, it’s a nice perk to have.

We’ve spent the better part of 30 years honing our itineraries, getting rid of the dodgy hotels and keeping the good ones, picking the best restaurants to visit, and organizing public transport and all the other logistics of travel so you don’t have to worry. Traveling alone can often be a) confusing and b) complicated. But with us, all you need is a good attitude – we’ll take care of the rest.

Our leaders know the areas of town to avoid after dark. They know how to haggle at markets, avoid pickpockets and scammers and generally have a good time without anything going wrong. And don’t forget, when you're a single traveler on a group tour, you’re in a group! You’ll have a bunch of new friends to watch your back (and your stuff). It’s all the flexibility and freedom of independent travel, but without the risks.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips, rooming is organized on a twin-share basis, and we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I have to pay for an individual room?

Not if you don’t want to. If you’re happy to bunk with a traveler of the same gender – paired up as per the gender marker on each of their passports – there’s nothing extra to pay on the vast majority of our trips. If you want your own room, just mention it to our customer service team when booking and they can organise an individual room for a small charge.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?

Intrepid travelers  are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages generally range from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.

Is it cheaper to travel in a group?

On average, solo travel on a  group tour  is way more cost-effective than heading out on your own as you're splitting the cost (we can also guarantee a lot more inclusions and extras than you’d usually get for your money).

Can I tailor the trip to me?

We have a range of trip styles –  Basix, Original and Comfort  – that offer different levels of flexibility and free time. While there’s always a set itinerary for the group, our Basix trips tend to have less included activities and more time to do your own thing, Original trips have a 50/50 balance, and our Comfort trips have more included activities. Lots of our travelers choose to travel on their own, so it’s common for people to want different things from their experience. Be sure to chat to your  leader ; they can recommend places to explore during free time or things to try after the trip has finished.

It pays to learn a little bit of the local language wherever you go and you should always consider the country’s dress code when picking out what to wear. In many places, you maybe be expected to dress modestly and cover up exposed skin so consider packing a sarong or light scarf to cover exposed shoulders, along with a long skirt or trousers. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s respectful (and smart) to follow the local style.

When you’re out and about being all adventure-y, just keep an eye on the sunset. Try to avoid catching public transport after dark when you’re on your own, especially if you’re carrying your suitcase/backpack/fancy camera/map (it kind of screams ‘tourist’). Traveling with a group is a smart move for any traveler; it’s always good to have people around who’ve got your back.

Social media may be the doom of mankind and rational thought as we know it, but it can be useful, even as a safety tool. Your friends and family are now privy to a minute-by-minute update of your whereabouts, regardless of where you are in the world. Before you leave home, give your friends/family a social media heads-up: ‘If I don’t post a sunset selfie for five days straight, get in touch and see if I’m okay.’

Share your itinerary

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewelery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.

Fare's fair

Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of traveling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Why charlotte, north carolina is a hidden gem for solo female travel.

Charlotte is a great choice for your first solo female trip.

If you’re a woman considering her first solo trip, but apprehensive about heading overseas—why not visit a destination in the U.S. instead? This way: you don’t have to worry about long flights, language barriers, or cultural differences. All you have to do find your own rhythm, and discover firsthand why millions of women now prefer to travel alone.

Though you have plenty of choices here in the States, cities are a smart starting point since they’ll expose you to many things that make traveling so rewarding, from cultural attractions to diverse restaurants. And while major urban hubs like New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami are great for group vacations, they can be a bit daunting for the first-time solo traveler.

This is when Charlotte enters the picture. As a true mid-sized city, it offers a unique urban experience merging warm Southern hospitality with a wonderfully progressive spirit. As I’ve learned during my recent excursions to North Carolina’s biggest city, Charlotte is a hidden gem in plain sight.

Where to Stay in Charlotte

Grand Bohemian Hotel Charlotte, Autograph Collection

Opened in 2020, Grand Bohemian Hotel Charlotte, Autograph Collection provides a refreshing alternative to Uptown’s more corporate stays with Argentinian flair and an array of luxurious amenities, from Poseidon Spa to the Executive Lounge. The main lobby and public spaces drip with opulent accents like Venetian chandeliers and eye-catching pieces—note the lobby’s oversized paintings from Argentine artist Andrea Carreras—plucked from the private collection of Richard Kessler, who was one of the founders of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. The 254 guestrooms and suites, too, are aesthetically striking and generously splashed with bold jewel tones, shimmering gold accents, and vibrant artwork.

A guest room at Grand Bohemian Hotel Charlotte, Autograph Collection

Argentina’s creative spirit is reflected in the hotel’s restaurant and bar as well. Taking its name from the playful black-tailed monkey native to South America, Mico is an all-day eatery turning out hearty fare heavy on Argentine influences, from churro donuts with chili chocolate sauce for breakfast to dinner’s whole branzino a la parilla (grilled over an open fire). Be sure to order A Taste of Malbec: Altitude Flight, a sippable journey through some of Argentina’s most esteemed wineries. In the mood for a cocktail? Try the 'Grand Bo' Old Fashioned made with the hotel’s own barrel bourbon. For a proper nightcap, zip up to the top floor’s Búho Bar , a swanky lounge marrying sweeping views of the city with spirited cocktails and savory small plates.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, what to do in charlotte.

For a workout that’s equal parts effective and fun, head to Rally . Founded by Barrett Worthington and Meg Charity, this unique space in LoSo combines indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, a cafe, restaurant—the Neopolitan-style pizzas are terrrific—and cocktail lounge under one roof. The vibe is wonderfully open and inclusive, making it a perfect spot to socialize as a solo female.

The Carriage House by Dhiran Mistry

For your skin and hair, you’re in luck since Charlotte is home to two of the most sought-after experts in the country. Facialist-to-the-stars Toska Husted —who’s expanding her business to Miami, Dallas, and Nashville—is trusted by some of the most photographed faces in the world (Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston) for her gentle demeanor and highly personalized approach to skin. At The Carriage House , New York City transplant Dhiran Mistry and his talented team deftly do it all, from undone bobs to subtle hightlights, in a stylish space that feels more like a hip clubhouse—help yourself to coffee or a cocktail from the kitchen—than a stuffy urban salon.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

When it’s time for a culture fix, twenty dollars will grant you access to three of Charlotte’s top cultural institutions: Bechtler Museum of Modern Art , The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture , and The Mint Museum . The best part is how they’re all just a two-minute walk from each other. Within one afternoon, you can immerse yourself in masterpieces by Giacometti and Calder; learn about the irreplaceable contributions of African-Americans in American culture; and dig deep into the world of American and European design.

Where to Eat in Charlotte

3rd & Fernwood

One of Charlotte’s most anticipated restaurant openings, 3rd & Fernwood by James Beard-nominated chef Greg Collier and his wife Subrina (Leah & Louise) blends Southern and West African influences in flavorful, soul-soothing dishes like purple eye pea mafe, caramalized plantain pudding, and seared trout smothered with okra gravy in a colorful and welcoming space.

What’s old is new again at Customshop . Opened in 2007 by Trey Wilson and bought in 2022 by chef Andres Kaifer and general manager Alex Bridges, this city staple has attracted a new generation of diners with a shareable globetrotting menu, from handmade pastas—get the highly craveable Blue Crab Agnolotti—to North Carolina scallops accompanied by Carolina Gold rice middlins (grits) and seasonal vegetables.

Other dining recommendations include Supperland , a steakhouse-bar-speakeasy housed in a lovingly restored mid-century church by the husband-wife team of Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown (Ever Andalo, Haberdish, and the upcoming Leluia Hall). Brimming with tea sandwiches, made-to-order eggs and carved meat stations, and baked sweet treats galore, Supperland’s popular weekend brunch buffet is a must.

From Joe and Katy Kindred, the pair behind Kindred, one of North Carolina’s most acclaimed restaurants, comes the quality-casual concept Milkbread . Taking up residence in a former Dairy Queen, the Plaza Midwood location cooks up pure comfort: glazed donuts, toasts heaped with assorted toppings, and fried chicken sandwiches. Opening soon is a downtown Milkbread location, along with Albertine , a fine dining Mediterranean spot in Uptown.

O-Ku Charlotte

If you love sushi, but don’t want to spend three figures on a tedious, drawn-out omakase, make a reservation at O-Ku . Despite opening in 2016, Charlotte’s outpost of the beloved East Coast Japanese restaurant chain consistently send out super-fresh nigiri, sashimi, and other creative raw seafood dishes like buttery yellowtail sushi topped with serrano pepper and Thai basil pesto. If you’re in town on a Monday or Wednesday, take advantage of the half-priced sushi happy hours.

Everything (Else) Worth Buying at Nordstrom’s Summer Sale

Portrait of Rachael Griffiths

Even on a regular day, it’s always worth scrolling through Nordstrom’s sale section . But on holidays like Labor Day (for which Nordstrom’s sale is a week long), it’s a veritable treasure trove. And while we’ve already rounded up everything we’ve written about that’s on sale , there’s plenty more good stuff that we haven’t explicitly written about (yet.) So, I decided to do some window shopping and share the best of those deals here. Just as suspected, I found huge markdowns on big names, from running gear by Free People to organic towels from Parachute — and even a classic Tory Burch tote.

Once you’re done here, be sure to read the rest of our ongoing Labor Day sales coverage .

Update on September 4, 2024:  Added new products, updated prices, and checked stock for all products.

Women’s fashion

As always, the best deals to be found are in women’s fashion. There were plenty of discounts on dresses, from drop-waist evening gowns to flats that are great for the transition into fall. I’m also a big fan of Free People’s running gear: They’re the only pieces I can stomach running in during a heatwave, and they’re on sale too.

FP Movement Get Your Flirt On Shorts

Men’s fashion

There’s plenty to pick from for men, too. From classic New Balances and CDG Converse to a Levi’s utility jacket that’s down to half-price.

New Balance 2002R Sneaker (Men)

I’ve had brows on the mind lately, so I was pleased to see that Anastasia Beverly Hill’s best-seller eyebrow kit had been marked down in the sale. There’s also a deal on Kiehl’s (highly giftable) best sellers and a jewelry stand I’m keeping in mind for gifting season.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Natural & Polished Deluxe Eyebrow Kit

I also sniffed out deals for the kitchen, bathroom, and the garden in the home section. We love the soft, absorbable towels from Parachute — and you can get one of its generously sized bath sheets for just $30.

Our-Place 3-Piece Kitchen Knife Set

Big brands were the most prolific in the kids’ section, with markdowns on Adidas, Mini Boden, and Capelli New York.

Prices start as low as $50 on a wide range of classic shoes, making this event the greatest way to celebrate the end of summer in style.

Birkenstock Arizona BS Suede Sandals

If you’re looking for a tried-and-true sandal to carry you through your travels and the transition from summer to fall, these suede Arizona sandals are the perfect choice. Now on sale for $117, these soft and supportive shoes are easy to slip on and off for travel days and sightseeing excursions, but you can trust that they’ll remain firmly strapped to your feet thanks to the adjustable buckles. These shoes are made with the classic Birkenstock cork footbeds that mold to your feet with extended wear for impressive arch support alongside roomy toe boxes, and they’re certain to look great with everything in your suitcase.

Birkenstock London BS Narrow Fit Suede Clogs

Birkenstock clogs are one of the brand’s most popular styles, but if you’re after a more secure fit that boasts the same slip-on design, look no further than the updated London clogs. This style looks nearly identical to the Boston shoe while adding heel coverage to keep them from sliding off your feet while you’re on the go. The exteriors are made from an ultra-soft suede fabric in tandem with comfy cork footbeds, while silver hardware adds visual intrigue to this basic shoe. They’re great for all-season wear — and they’re on sale for $140.

Birkenstock Mayari Narrow Birkibuc Sandals

These strappy sandals add a feminine touch to your favorite functional shoe, which is why shoppers will want to snag them while they’re on sale for a mere $50 this Labor Day weekend. Adjustable buckles on each strap allow for a snug fit that won’t slip and slide, and criss-cross detailing at the big toes provides another method of keeping your shoes firmly on your feet. Of course, these shoes are still fitted with suede-lined cork footbeds so you can expect a snug and comfortable fit that supports you through your entire travel agenda. Just don’t wait too long to shop because sizes are already limited.

Birkenstock Taormina Waxy Leather Sandals

Similar to the Mayari style , these gorgeous leather sandals feature a strappy design that’s undeniably sleek — all while offering supreme cushioning and support for long days on your feet. Sturdy straps at the ankles keep these shoes in place securely and thick soles provide essential grip against any slick surfaces you may come across. However, the sandals are especially travel-friendly thanks to their slim and packable design, so whether you’re embarking on a European adventure to celebrate the end of summer, or are simply heading out of town for the weekend, they'll make the ultimate travel companion.

Birkenstock Boston BS Suede Clogs

Currently available in a full range of sizes (and on sale for $120), the Birkenstock Boston Clogs are ready to be added to your cart if you want to be the most comfortable, best-dressed traveler on any adventure. These slip-on shoes are endlessly supportive and look great when styled with dresses, denim, leggings, and more, and you’ll quickly find that they’re your new go-to shoe for everything from travel days to running errands. The buttery suede exterior is both soft and durable, while the interiors are built with significant arch support along with deep heel cups that cradle your feet with every step. They’re the perfect transitional shoes as we head into the fall — and they’ll keep your feet cozy during chilly long-haul flights.

Birkenstock Andermatt Narrow Felt Booties

As a testament to the fact that the brand can truly do it all, Birkenstock has created the coziest fall booties you’ll want to pick up before the season commences — and right now, they’re on sale for 20 percent off. Made with a warm felt exterior, these pull-on boots are a no-brainer choice for heading through airport security or going on sightseeing adventures since they’re easy to get on and off. In fact, they’re essentially the outdoor-appropriate equivalent of slippers. Lined with silky-soft sheepskin, these booties are about to take the spot of your favorite fall and winter shoes, plus they’re made with the durable soles needed to stay safe and confident on a wide range of terrain. They’re well-insulated, absorb moisture, and provide impressive airflow that allows you to avoid the unpleasant sensation of sweaty feet as well.

Papillio by Birkenstock Glenda Suede Sandals

Birkenstock shoes are well-known for being excellent everyday shoes, but if you’re on the lookout for a pair of sandals that’s suitable to elevate your favorite casual outfit without being too over the top, this suede almost-wedge is for you. The base of the shoe, while still boasting a supportive cork footbed, is designed with a slight platform wedge that effortlessly dresses up your clothing — all without sacrificing comfort. Meanwhile, the straps are made from rustic khaki suede that won’t rub or chafe your feet while still providing a pop of color to your travel apparel. Adjustable ankle straps promise to keep them firmly in place (no matter how much walking is on the agenda), and right now, these shockingly stylish shoes are on sale for 19 percent off during the long weekend.

Birkenstock Kalahari Narrow Fit Birko-flor Sandals

Sporty, functional, and perfectly packable, these lightweight sandals are the ideal companions for end-of-summer hiking excursions while they’re on sale for $117. Three Velcro straps allow you to achieve the perfect fit that doesn’t rub or chafe while firmly keeping these shoes in place, and suede-lined cork footbeds offer unparalleled comfort straight from the box. These shoes provide a bold pop of color to your active travel wardrobe (and are sure to be a hit on the trails), while textured, PU soles offer essential grip to keep you safe on the most unpredictable terrain. As a bonus, they’re even suitable for water activities.

Birkenstock Arizona Narrow Suede and Shearling Sandals

With cooler weather right around the corner, these cozy, shearling-lined sandals are a genius addition to your travel arsenal, and shoppers won’t want to miss them while they’re on sale for 14 percent off. Dainty, pink suede straps will add an effortless, feminine touch to your wardrobe while feeling just as comfortable as a good pair of slippers, and the fuzzy sheepskin lining will keep your feet warm even if these shoes aren’t worn with socks. The straps are adjustable, resulting in a snug fit that won’t easily slip off, and the cork insoles will also mold to your feet with regular wear, creating a unique and entirely personalized fit.

Papillio by Birkenstock Boston Chunky Narrow Suede Clogs

Do you love the look of clogs but find yourself drawn to shoes that give you a little height? Then don’t miss the chance to score these chunky, updated Boston Clogs while they’re on sale for $130 this Labor Day weekend. A 1.5-inch platform sole gives you a little extra height while remaining easy to walk in, but the rest of the shoe follows the same formula as the brand’s traditional clogs, complete with suede-lined cork insoles and soft suede exteriors. The style is designed to become more and more comfortable with each wear thanks to the moldable interior, and we love the simple black shade for pairing well with your favorite travel outfits.

Birkenstock Sahara CC Narrow Birko-flor Sandals

Slip-on sandals can still be sporty and functional, and the Birkenstock Sahara shoes are a testament to that fact — and are now on sale for 20 percent off for Labor Day. Bright, cantaloupe-colored straps are a fun addition to even the most basic packing lists, and the shade is paired with sensible Velcro closures that are easy to remove in a hurry while keeping the shoes firmly in place during wear. Grippy outsoles make these sandals a shoo-in for water activities, light hikes, and lengthy walking tours, and they’re certain to be comfy straight from the box.

Papillio by Birkenstock Gabriela Narrow Sandals

Give your basic wedges an upgrade this fall with these casual yet classy sandals that feature all the comfort of your favorite Birkenstock styles alongside a slightly elevated heel. The well-cushioned platforms will be easy to walk in and perfect for dressing up anything from simple jeans to a maxi dress, and they’re guaranteed to be a versatile addition to your travel wardrobe well into the season. Now on sale for 21 percent off, these shoes are a must-have for your upcoming vacation, but sizing is limited so don’t wait too long to shop.
