St John’s College

A constituent college of the University of Oxford, St John’s College was founded in 1555 as a men’s college, but has been coeducational since 1979. With a financial endowment of £600 million as of 2020, St John’s is the richest college in Oxford, mainly due to its ownership of land in the city of Oxford which was developed in the nineteenth century. It is located in a central location on St Giles’ and has a student body of approximately 390 undergraduates and 250 postgraduates, in addition to over 100 academic staff.

What's the History of St John’s College?

St John’s College was founded in 1555 as a men’s college. Its founder, Sir Thomas White , lately Lord Mayor of London, envisioned it as a source of educated Roman Catholic clerics to support the Counter-Reformation under Queen Mary.

White bought the buildings on the east side of St Giles’ that had belonged to the former College of St Bernard (north of Balliol and Trinity Colleges). These buildings dated back to 1437. The college was initially small, and the fellows lectured in rhetoric, Greek, and dialectic (not directly in theology).

The endowments which St John’s was given benefited also from the suburban development of Oxford. The college is today, one of the largest in the city.

The Buildings of St John’s College

The Front Quadrangle

The Front Quad consists of buildings built for the Cistercian St Bernard’s College, which had began construction in 1437. Much of the exterior was as it is now, although the Eastern range was incomplete. The college founder made major alterations to create the current college hall, and designated the Northern part of the Eastern range to be the lodging of the president.  The turret clock, made by  John Knibb , dates from 1690. Above the Porters’ Lodge is a statue of St. John the Baptist made by Eric Gill.

The chapel was initially dedicated to St Bernard of Clairvaux (1530) but re-dedicated to St John the Baptist in 1557. In 1840 the chapel’s interior underwent major changes which created the gothic revival pews, roof, wall arcading, and west screen. Thomas White, William Laud, and William Juxon (three presidents of the college) are buried beneath this chapel. Choral services have been sung in the chapel since 1618.

The Canterbury Quadrangle

This quad is a fine example of Italian Renaissance architecture, one of the first in Oxford. It was commissioned by Archbishop Laud and completed in 1636. It contains t he college library, which consists of four parts all connected to each other: The Old Library (south side, built 1596–1598), The Laudian Library (built 1631–1635 above the eastern colonnade, overlooking the garden), The Paddy Room (1971–77) and the new Library and Study Centre, which opened in 2019.

The North Quadrangle

The North Quad was not designed but is the irregular product of various buildings constructed since the college was founded. For example, in 1612 the college cook (Thomas Clarke) was given permission to build a college kitchen and residential rooms. In 1676 the first part of today’s Senior Common Room was constructed. Various further additions and renovations took place in 1826, 1900, 1936, and 2004–2005.

The Dolphin Quadrangle

There were three houses on 2–4 St Giles’ that formed an inn, the Dolphin Inn. In 1947–1948 the college constructed on the site a neo-Georgian Dolphin Quadrangle, designed by Edward Maufe . Although this was right after the war, the college was able to build it using stored its own timber in Bagley Wood, owned by the college to this day.

The Sir Thomas White Quadrangle

Not actually a quadrangle but an L-shaped building, it was built in 1972-75 and its upper floors are predominantly used as student residences. The ground floor contains communal facilities such as the college bar, movie rooms, and JCR. Underground areas contain the Games Room and Erg Room for rowing.

The Garden Quadrangle

The Garden quad is a modern (1993) neo-Italianate design that includes the college auditorium, student rooms and kitchens. It won five architecture awards, and a 2003 poll organised by The Oxford Times voted the £7.5m quadrangle the best building erected in Oxford in the preceding 75 years.

The Kendrew Quadrangle

St John’s most recent quad was completed in 2010 and named after Sir John Kendrew , former president of the college, Nobel Laureate and the college’s greatest benefactor of the twentieth century. The construction has been dubbed “the last great quad in the city centre”. Much of the energy required to heat the building is provided by solar panels on the roof, geothermal pipes below the basement and woodchips from the college wood.

Other Properties

The college also owns almost all the buildings on the Eastern stretch of St Giles’, which are now used for various purposes such as tutoring, diners, and receptions.

More Oxford University Colleges

Oxford has colleges due to the way the University of Oxford evolved over time. The university was not founded in a conventional sense but rather grew organically during the 12th century as a collection of scholars who gathered to teach and learn. Over time, these scholars began to organize themselves into formal groups to provide housing, dining, and structured academic communities, leading to the establishment of colleges. Library and IT services

In 2019 St John's opened a new library and study centre equipped with 90 study seats and multiple seminar rooms. There is also a specialised law library for law students.

Wireless networking is available across College and most of the external housing.  Almost all student rooms also have high speed wired network connections.

There are resource rooms within the college, including one which is for use by graduate students only, located in the MCR, which can be used for study. Most student rooms have network connections. College provides free mono printing (for academic purposes) and paid colour printing is also available. There is a printer just for graduate use in the MCR building. Many teaching and some study spaces have interactive displays which can be used as whiteboards or for showing presentations.

Sport, music and college facilities

Students at St John’s enjoy playing a diverse range of sports within College and for the University, and many of the College’s sports facilities are of a professional standard. The MCR run various teams and sports, specifically for graduates, in addition to those of the college. In College there are two fully equipped gyms, a table tennis room, two squash courts and a croquet lawn. A third specialised gym is used for training by rowers. The large College Sports Ground and Pavilion provides excellent playing, changing and socialising facilities, and on the River Thames the Boathouse is fully equipped for rowers.

St John’s students partake in a lively mix of music and drama events in college. The college hosts regular concerts, has a number of well-equipped music rooms, a joint orchestra with St Anne’s College and a chapel choir.

The Oxford Alternative Orchestra is also based at St John's.

The College is active in promoting the visual arts, through commissions, exhibitions and a programme of Artists-in-Residence.

St John’s College Chapel welcomes all members of college, and all are encouraged to enjoy the possibility that the Chapel and its services offer for reflection. Members of every Christian denomination, as well as those with no Christian faith, are valued participants in all aspects of Chapel life.

Our Bainton Road Nursery was established in November 2016. It is primarily for the fellows, students, lecturers and staff of St Johns College. Early enquiries are encouraged as there is usually a waiting list.

Facilities for disabled students

St John’s College is committed to being an open and inclusive community where everyone has access to the support they need to succeed. The college welcomes students with any kind of visible or invisible disabilities and works closely with them to ensure they can participate in college life as fully as possible. Many of the buildings are accessible to those with physical disabilities. There are several accessible bedrooms on the main College site, two of which have access to a kitchen which has been adapted to the needs of students with visual impairments.

Further information about building accessibility is available through  the college website . Please contact the College Disability Co-ordinator about any specific accessibility requirements.

The college's Welfare and Wellbeing team support students with any aspect of their life at Oxford. The team is led by the Head of Student Wellbeing who will always meet with students for a “starting point” conversation aimed at supporting them to find solutions and support for any issue they may be facing. The college has a College Nurse and College Psychologist and a dedicated 24/7 online or phone helpline for support with “in the moment” issues which might be causing stress and anxiety. There is a welfare team who support the Main Porters’ Lodge to deal with any issues which arise out of hours and the college also runs a wellbeing activity programme in term time and in most vacations. The welfare and wellbeing team will support students to access college or University services that they need as well as offering tips, advice and support to help them enjoy life and thrive at St John’s.

The college has a very active Middle Common Room (MCR) committee who organise a wide range of social and intellectual activities for graduate students including guest night dinners, excursions, film nights and bops.

The MCR is located in a modern building which includes a resource room, television room, kitchen and a large function space where many events are held. The international nature of the graduate community and the organisational skills and enthusiasm of the MCR committee ensure that new members are made to feel immediately at home.

Accommodation

Single room accommodation is offered to students for their first year of graduate study.  Most single rooms are on campus or in central locations which are just a short walk from the college and the city centre.

The college does offer couples and family accommodation; however, availability is limited, so early applications are recommended. Most of these flats are nearby to the college, around fifteen minutes' walk.

Rooms and Flats may also be available in subsequent years, via a ballot run by the MCR.

Students can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the beautiful Hall in College. The menu is varied and healthy.
